The dependence of the velocity of surface acoustic wave (SAW) as a function of an external applied magnetic field is investigated in a Fe thin film epitaxially grown on a piezoelectric GaAs substrate. The SAW velocity is observed to strongly depend on both the amplitude and direction of the magnetic field. To interpret the experimental data a phenomenological approach to the relative change in SAW velocity is implemented. We find that the experimental velocity variation can be well reproduced provided that the spin wave dispersion is taken into account. The validity of this phenomenological model is attested by the comparison with a quasi-exact magnetoelastic one.

Today, surface acoustic waves (SAWs) and bulk acoustic waves are already two of the very few phononic technologies of industrial relevance and can been found in a myriad of devices employing these nanoscale earthquakes on a chip. Acoustic radio frequency filters, for instance, are integral parts of wireless devices. SAWs in particular find applications in life sciences and microfluidics for sensing and mixing of tiny amounts of liquids. In addition to this continuously growing number of applications, SAWs are ideally suited to probe and control elementary excitations in condensed matter at the limit of single quantum excitations. Even collective excitations, classical or quantum are nowadays coherently interfaced by SAWs. This wide, highly diverse, interdisciplinary and continuously expanding spectrum literally unites advanced sensing and manipulation applications. Remarkably, SAW technology is inherently multiscale and spans from single atomic or nanoscopic units up even to the millimeter scale. The aim of this Roadmap is to present a snapshot of the present state of surface acoustic wave science and technology in 2019 and provide an opinion on the challenges and opportunities that the future holds from a group of renown experts, covering the interdisciplinary key areas, ranging from fundamental quantum effects to practical applications of acoustic devices in life science.

International audience; We report on a complete elastic characterization by picosecond ultrasonics technique of lithium phosphorous oxynitride (LiPON) thin films, which are nowadays, considered as promising solid-state electrolytes for microbatteries technology. Longitudinal sound velocity is deduced from Brillouin oscillation detection at variable incidence angles. The density is estimated through an interfacial energy analysis related to the echo amplitude decay. Transverse wave velocity is obtained across the dispersion curve of Rayleigh surface waves. Combining these different approaches, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio of LiPON are finally found to be 79 GPa and 0.27, respectively. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

International audience; We present a molecular dynamics investigation of the cross-plane thermal conductivity of superlattices using the non-equilibrium molecular dynamics method. The purpose is to investigate the influence of the interfaces, which is expected to be important in those nanostructures where the superlattice period is smaller than the phonon mean free path. In contrast to previous studies, more realistic interfaces are considered: interfacial roughness is modeled using atomic rectangular islands and interdiffusion is taken into account. It is shown that thermal conductivity is very sensitive to the detailed interfacial shape and to the presence of interdiffusion. This may be relevant to recent experiments.

International audience; “3ω” experiments aim at measuring thermal conductivities and diffusivities. Data analysis relies on integral expressions of the temperature. In this paper, we derive new explicit analytical formu- lations of the solution of the heat diffusion equation, using Bessel, Struve and Meijer-G functions, in the 3ω geometry for bulk solids. These functions are available in major computational tools. Therefore numerical integrations can be avoided in data analysis. Moreover, these expressions enable rigorous derivations of the asymptotic behaviors. We also underline that the diffusivity can be extracted from the phase data without any calibration while the conductivity measurement requires a careful one.

International audience; In this chapter we present the basics of heat transfer in composites. The first approach, called the effective medium method, averages in a suitable way over the conductivities of the constituents. This gives good results for sufficiently large particles. However, when the particles are smaller than the mean free path of the excitations carrying the heat, the implicit assumptions of the effective medium theory are no longer justified. One must then look at the way the particles scatter the energy carriers.

International audience; We present thermal conductivity measurements performed in three short-period (GaAs)_9(AlAs)_5 superlattices. The samples were grown at different temperatures, leading to different small scale roughness and broadening of the interfaces. The cross-plane conductivity is measured with a differential 3w method, at room temperature. The order of magnitude of the overall thermal conductivity variation is consistent with existing theoretical models, although the actual variation is smaller than expected.

We report on the acoustic attenuation in an AlPdMn icosahedral quasicrystal between 15 and 300 K, in the tens of GHz range. High frequency coherent longitudinal acoustic waves are excited and detected by an optical ``pump and probe'' technique, in an interferometric configuration. Our results reveal that, at high temperature $(Tg100\mathrm{K}),$ the acoustic attenuation is rather small, close to the attenuation in crystals and much smaller than in disordered solids. We stress that Akhieser processes (phonon-phonon interactions) must be active in quasicrystals and give the correct behavior and order of magnitude of the acoustic attenuation, at high temperature. At low temperature, departure from the standard behavior arising from phonon-phonon interaction is not understood.

We show that the nonlinear behavior of transverse acoustic waves can reveal the anisotropic structure of an icosahedral quasicrystal, at the macroscopic level. We report experiments performed in i-Al-Pd-Mn. We observe that a primary transverse acoustic wave can generate a second harmonic transverse acoustic wave. We also observe a specific relation between the polarization directions of those waves. These observations are manifestations on a macroscopic scale of the long-range order in quasicrystals.

International audience; Thermoreflectance experiments are sensitive to the thermal properties of thin layers deposited on substrates (conductivity and diffusivity). However, retrieving these properties from experimental data remains a difficult issue. The case of a conducting layer deposited on an insulating substrate was studied previously. We present here a mathematical and experimental analysis of the thermoreflectance response in the opposite case: an insulating layer on a conducting substrate. We show theoretically that conductivity and diffusivity can be determined independently thanks to a comparison with the substrate. The method is applied to experiments performed on a silicon substrate covered with a thin layer deposited by sputtering a titanium target. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. The existence in polystyrene of an internal-friction peak around 80 K at 50 MHz is reported. This peak displays many similarities with the peak observed in amorphous selenium. It is interpreted in the frame of the same model. We explain our results with thermal activated relaxation processes displaying a constant distribution of barrier heights between 0 and 600 K. We suggest that the observed peak is the resolution at high frequency of the e-shoulder which has been reported previously at much lower frequency.

On the other hand, a new road emerged towards the wave based computing by employing spin waves (SWs). The advantages, that SWs offer for the data processing are nm wavelength as compared to the electromagnetic waves in the same frequency range (GHz-THz) and the absence of Joule heating. This is possible due to a very fundamental property of magnetic bodies, the magneto-elastic coupling, that is when magnetization orientation and strain are coupled. This thesis focuses on the phenomenology of the magneto-elastic interaction in thin epitaxied films of magnetostrictive Fe0.8Ga0.2. We performed a systematic experimental study of the magneto-elastic interactions in thin films of different thicknesses and magnetic structures. We also developed two phenomenological models in order to interpret our results. An important result of this study is that we are able to extract the magneto-elastic and the magnetic anisotropy constants by acoustic means. The thesis has also a strong technological component. One aim was to efficiently excite surface acoustic waves in GHz frequency range (1-5 GHz) on GaAs piezoelectric substrates in order to observe the resonant interaction with thermal spin waves. We also managed to excite spin waves in thin epitaxied magnetostrictive layers, using RF antennas. We present thermal conductivity measurements in short period GaAs/AlAs superlattices. The aim of this study is to get a better understanding of the various processes which restrict the phonon transport in semiconductor superlattices. In particular, the role of interface scattering is still under debate and very few experiments have been devoted to address this issue. Using the so-called 3w method, we measured the cross-plane thermal conductivity, of (GaAs)n(AlAs)n where n=3, 8 and 20. The interface roughness is controlled thanks to the growth temperature of the samples. We also present and discuss results as a function of temperature, between 20 and 300 K. For a given period, no significant change as a function of interface roughness is observed. Recent molecular dynamic simulations, using realistic interface models, could give clues to this low sensitivity versus interface quality.; GaAs et AlAs sont deux bons conducteurs de la chaleur. Or, le matériau artificiel obtenu par empilement de couches nanométriques de ces deux matériaux est un mauvais conducteur. 1 Cet effet remarquable de la nanostructuration est encore mal compris mais deux ingrédients semblent devoir être considérés : 1) la modification profonde des courbes de dispersion des phonons (effet "intrinsèque"), 2) la diffusion des phonons par les défauts localisés aux interfaces (effet "non-intrinsèque"). Il est très difficile de quantifier l'importance relative de ces deux effets. Toutefois, les théories basées uniquement sur les effets intrinsèques ne rendent pas compte de la totalité de la réduction de conductivité observée expérimentalement. Ainsi, le point de vue généralement adopté à ce jour associe le mécanisme dominant à la présence de défauts aux interfaces. Le but de cette thèse est de mieux comprendre les mécanismes de conduction thermique dans les super-réseaux. Pour celà, nous avons étudié expérimentalement l'importance relative des deux effets, intrinsèque et non-intrinsèque, en comparant les propriétés de deux familles d'échantillons, la première présentant des interfaces quasi-parfaites, la seconde présentant des interfaces dégradées. Nous nous sommes intéressés aux super-réseaux (GaAs)n/(AlAs)n. La croissance de ces matériaux est en effet bien maîtrisée et l'accord de maille quasi-parfait entre GaAs et AlAs permet l'élaboration de super-réseaux présentant des interfaces très abruptes. On contrôle alors la qualité des interfaces en ajustant les conditions de croissance. Au delà de l'intérêt fondamental, les études sur les super-réseaux peuvent être utiles à des applications telles que les dispositifs thermoélectriques ou les lasers à semi-conducteurs. Un certain nombre d'études ont montré qu'un super-réseau pouvait avoir une efficacité thermoélec- trique supérieure à celle d'un matériau massif. Or, l'efficacité d'un matériau thermoélectrique augmente lorsque sa conductivité thermique diminue. Il serait alors avantageux de diminuer la conductivité thermique des super-réseaux thermoélectriques. Par contre, les problèmes d'évacuation de chaleur rencontrés dans les lasers utilisant des super-réseaux (puits quantiques) montrent qu'il serait avantageux d'augmenter la conductivité thermique.
