Abstract

The design and performances of a newly built electrostatic charge state analyzer constructed to act as a spectrometer for keV/u ions are reported. It consists of two 90∘ curved electrodes enclosed by Matsuda electrodes. This setup was recently tested using Ar9+ and Ar12+ ion beams at an energy of 10 keV per charge unit. This spectrometer achieves a good separation of different charge states formed by electron capture processes during collisions between primary ions and the residual gas. Thanks to these first tests, we have identified up to three different background contributions on the detector that need to be reduced or suppressed.

Abstract

International audience; The PELIICAEN (Platform for the Study of Ion Implantation Controlled and Analyzed at the Nanometric Scale) setup is a unique device, both for all of its in situ ultra-high vacuum equipment (focused ion beams (FIB) column, Secondary Electron Microscope (SEM), Atomic Force and Scanning Tunnelling Microscope (AFM/STM)), and for its nanostructuration performances on material. The setup has been recently equipped with its own electron cyclotron resonance ion sources, a new position-controlled platform using pneumatic vibration insulators and a fast pulsing device. Its performances were then deeply improved, providing access to a large choice of ions, an adjustable ion implantation depth up to few hundreds of nanometres, an image resolution down to 25 nm and an ion beam size on sample down to 100 nm. With all these equipment, the PELIICAEN setup is in the international foreground to perform and analyse ion implantation and surface modification.

Abstract

International audience; The performance of a newly built omega type electrostatic analyzer designed to act as an in-line charge-state purification system for ions in the kiloelectronvolt energy range is reported. The analyzer consists of a set of four consecutive electrostatic 140° concentric cylindrical electrodes enclosed by Matsuda electrodes. This setup was recently tested and validated using O5+, Ar9+, and Xe20+ ion beams at an energy of 14 qkeV at the ARIBE facility. A resolving power of 10.5 and a transmission of 100% of the desired charge state are measured allowing a good purification of incoming ion beams with charge states up to 10+ and a fairly good purification for charge states at least up to 20+. In comparison with other in-line solutions such as the Wien filter, our system has the advantage of being purely electrostatic and therefore lacking common drawbacks as, for example, hysteresis.

Abstract

International audience; Mainly encouraged by the increasing application of ion beams for cancer treatment (hadron-therapy) including carbon beams, the use of heavy ion facilities for radiobiology is expanding rapidly today. As an alternative to dedicated centers for treatment and medical research, accelerators like GANIL offer the possibility to undertake such experiments. Since 20 years, CIMAP, reinforced 15 years ago by the biological host laboratory LARIA, has been receiving researchers in radiobiology and assisted them in performing experiments in different fields such as hadron-therapy, space radioprotection and fundamental biological and physico-chemical mechanisms. We present here a short description of the beam line and the on-line equipments that allow the automatic irradiation of up to 24 biological samples at once. We also developed an original on-line beam monitoring procedure for low ion flux (low dose rates) based on the measurement of the K-shell X-rays emitted from a thin iron foil. This detector is calibrated on an absolute scale before each experiment by counting etched tracks on an irradiated CR39 polymer plate. We present the performances and limits of this method and finally give typical fluence (dose) uncertainties for a standard irradiation in radiobiology.

Abstract

We developed a new sub-nanosecond time-resolved instrument to study the dynamics of UV-visible luminescence under high stopping power heavy ion irradiation. We applied our instrument, called SPORT, on a fast plastic scintillator (BC-400) irradiated with 27-MeV Ar ions having high mean electronic stopping power of 2.6 MeV/\mu m. As a consequence of increasing permanent radiation damages with increasing ion fluence, our investigations reveal a degradation of scintillation intensity together with, thanks to the time-resolved measurement, a decrease in the decay constant of the scintillator. This combination indicates that luminescence degradation processes by both dynamic and static quenching, the latter mechanism being predominant. Under such high density excitation, the scintillation deterioration of BC-400 is significantly enhanced compared to that observed in previous investigations, mainly performed using light ions. The observed non-linear behaviour implies that the dose at which luminescence starts deteriorating is not independent on particles' stopping power, thus illustrating that the radiation hardness of plastic scintillators can be strongly weakened under high excitation density in heavy ion environments., Comment: 5 figures, accepted in Nucl. Abstract

The high energy density of electronic excitations due to the impact of swift heavy ions can induce structural modifications in materials. We present a X-ray diffractometer called ALIX, which has been set up at the low-energy IRRSUD beamline of the GANIL facility, to allow the study of structural modification kinetics as a function of the ion fluence. The X-ray setup has been modified and optimized to enable irradiation by swift heavy ions simultaneously to X-ray pattern recording. We present the capability of ALIX to perform simultaneous irradiation - diffraction by using energy discrimination between X-rays from diffraction and from ion-target interaction. To illustrate its potential, results of sequential or simultaneous irradiation - diffraction are presented in this article to show radiation effects on the structural properties of ceramics. Phase transition kinetics have been studied during xenon ion irradiation of polycrystalline MgO and SrTiO3. We have observed that MgO oxide is radiation-resistant to high electronic excitations, contrary to the high sensitivity of SrTiO3, which exhibits transition from the crystalline to the amorphous state during irradiation. By interpreting the amorphization kinetics of SrTiO3, defect overlapping models are discussed as well as latent track characteristics. Abstract

Poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) films were irradiated by means of heavy ions (in the electronic stopping-power range) and electrons. Both types of ionizing radiation induce in the polymer film ionizations and excitations, but swift heavy ions induce a huge density of excitations and ionizations along the ion path. Dose-range goes from 0.3 to 40 MGy. Irradiations were performed with Kr ions in the presence of helium, hydrogen, deuterium, and oxygen. FTIR transmission measurements show differences in the nature of the created defects. Triple bonds are characteristic of the Kr ion irradiation. Double bonds, isolated and conjugated, exist for both kinds of radiation, but concentrations are higher with the Kr radiation. The presence of oxygen during irradiation produces oxidization defects

Abstract

International audience; Multiply charged ion beam transmission through insulating capillaries is today a very active field of research. Thanks to the work of several groups during the last five years, several features of this unexpected process have been evidenced. The open challenge is to understand and control the self-organized charging-up of the capillary walls, which leads finally to the ion transmission. Up to now, the specific charge distribution on the inner surface, as well as the dynamics of the build-up, are still to be understood. While capillaries usually studied are microscopic pore networks etched in different materials, our concern is in macroscopic single capillaries made of glass. With a length of several centimeters and a diameter of a few micrometers at the exit, these capillaries have nevertheless the same aspect ratio as the etched pores (length/diameter ≈ 100). One of the leading goals of this research on single capillaries is to produce multi-charged ion beams with diameters smaller than a micrometer (nano-beams). Abstract

International audience; Carbon nanoparticles synthesised by laser pyrolysis of small hydrocarbons are deposited at low energy on a silicon substrate. Infrared spectroscopy of the as-formed films are studied as a function of the synthesis parameters and post-treatments, such as annealing and heavy ion irradiation. Correlation between infrared spectroscopy and multiscale organisation of the samples is made through transmission electron microscopy, including image analysis. Changes in infrared spectra are analysed in terms of the carbon network building. The relevance of the results to model the structure and spectroscopy of carbon dust in the carbon-rich circumstellar media is discussed.

Abstract

We used channeling through a thin crystal to get an estimate of the cross section of the resonant trielectronic capture by ${\mathrm{Kr}}^{34+}$ ions. K x-ray\char21{}$K$ x-ray coincidence measurements were performed with a selection on the charge state and energy loss of transmitted ions. An upper limit of $1.9\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}27} {\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ at the resonance is obtained, and this represents an improvement by two orders of magnitude with respect to previous ion-gas experiments. The possibility to reach the theoretical predictions experimentally is discussed.
