1. Zak-OTFS with Interleaved Pilots to Extend the Region of Predictable Operation

Abstract

When the delay period of the Zak-OTFS carrier is greater than the delay spread of the channel, and the Doppler period of the carrier is greater than the Doppler spread of the channel, the effective channel filter taps can simply be read off from the response to a single pilot carrier waveform. The input-output (I/O) relation can then be reconstructed for a sampled system that operates under finite duration and bandwidth constraints. We introduce a framework for pilot design in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain which makes it possible to support users with very different delay-Doppler characteristics when it is not possible to choose a single delay and Doppler period to support all users. The method is to interleave single pilots in the DD domain, and to choose the pilot spacing so that the I/O relation can be reconstructed by solving a small linear system of equations., Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication

Abstract

The filter taps can simply be read off from the response to a single Zak-OTFS pilot pulsone, and the I/O relation can be reconstructed for a sampled system that operates under finite duration and bandwidth constraints. In previous work we had measured BER performance of a baseline system where we used separate Zak-OTFS subframes for sensing and data transmission. In this Letter we demonstrate how to use turbo signal processing to match BER performance of this baseline system when we integrate sensing and communication within the same Zak-OTFS subframe. Abstract

The Zak-OTFS input/output (I/O) relation is predictable and non-fading when the delay and Doppler periods are greater than the effective channel delay and Doppler spreads, a condition which we refer to as the crystallization condition. When the crystallization condition is satisfied, we describe how to integrate sensing and communication within a single Zak-OTFS subframe by transmitting a pilot in the center of the subframe and surrounding the pilot with a pilot region and guard band to mitigate interference between data symbols and pilot. At the receiver we first read off the effective channel taps within the pilot region, and then use the estimated channel taps to recover the data from the symbols received outside the pilot region. We introduce a framework for filter design in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain where the symplectic Fourier transform connects aliasing in the DD domain (predictability of the I/O relation) with time/bandwidth expansion. The choice of pulse shaping filter determines the fraction of pilot energy that lies outside the pilot region and the degradation in BER performance that results from the interference to data symbols. We demonstrate that Gaussian filters in the DD domain provide significant improvements in BER performance over the sinc and root raised cosine filters considered in previous work. We also demonstrate that, by limiting DD domain aliasing, Gaussian filters extend the region where the crystallization condition is satisfied. The Gaussian filters considered in this paper are a particular case of factorizable pulse shaping filters in the DD domain, and this family of filters may be of independent interest., Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication

5. Cyclical Program Reviews at Smaller Post-Secondary Institutions: Can the Time and Effort Be Justified?

Abstract

Cyclical program reviews (CPRs), also called periodic or academic reviews at institutions of higher education, are undertaken to ensure that academic programs meet a variety of objectives related to teaching and learning, as well as professional credentialing, quality assurance, and institutional requirements. Preparing, reviewing, and implementing a CPR requires significant time and effort for those assigned to this task, especially if the program has never previously been through a CPR. Much has been written on how to undertake a CPR (Bresciani, 2006), what measures are useful in assessing programs (Jayachandran et al., 2019), and some of the problems that external reviewers encounter with CPRs (Halonen & Dunn, 2017). This article, however, provides new insights concerning important considerations that should be addressed when preparing to undertake a CPR--from the perspectives of both administrators and faculty at smaller institutions where the number of faculty may be small and resources for the CPR process are often limited. Drawing on a case study of CPRs in several social sciences programs and a broader survey of those involved in CPRs from 2015-2020 at a small Western Canadian university, the authors identify key issues in preparing a CPR, such as the timing of the review, the advantages and disadvantages of an individual approach versus a team approach in preparing the CPR, the role of administrators in the CPR process, the importance of institutional templates in preparing the CPR, and the need for clearly identified program learning outcomes to guide the CPR process. This article also examines how a pandemic can impact the CPR process.

16. Redesigning payments for ecosystem services to increase cost-effectiveness

Abstract

Abstract Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) are a widely used approach to incentivize conservation efforts such as avoided deforestation. Although PES effectiveness has received significant scholarly attention, how PES design modifications can improve program outcomes is less explored. We present findings from a randomized trial in Mexico that tested whether a PES contract that requires enrollees to enroll all of their forest is more effective than the traditional PES contract that allows them to choose which forest parcels to enroll. The modification’s aim is to prevent landowners from enrolling only parcels they planned to conserve anyway while leaving aside other parcels to deforest. We find that the full-enrollment treatment significantly reduces deforestation compared to the traditional contract (41% less deforestation; p = 0.01). As a result, cost-effectiveness of the PES program quadruples. This result highlights the potential to substantially improve the efficacy of conservation payments through simple contract modifications.

Abstract Hydroxyapatite (HA) is an extensively used biomaterial for dental and orthopaedic applications because of its biocompatibility and biomimetic nature. HA is extensively used as a bone-graft substitute. HA bone graft substitutes of bovine or synthetic origins have been extensively studied. However, caprine-based HA has not been explored. In this study, we aimed to determine the utilization of goat bone-derived HA for commercial applications. HA from caprine bone and teeth was isolated using thermal calcination. The developed HA can be used as a bone graft substitute. Chemical characterization of the isolated HA was carried out using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The biocompatibility and apatite formation of isolated HA were assessed using MG-63 cells, MC3T3-E1, L929 cells, MSCs, adipose derived stem cells, human dermal tissue derived fibroblast cells and osteoblast-like cell line, The studies demonstrate that HA support cell adhesion and osteogenic properties. To improve sheep, lamp, or caprine bone-derived HA, several other composites have been developed with MgO2, ZrO2, ZnO2, and other polymeric substances. 3D printed technology was used to develop a bioink using sheep-derived HA and printed the composite scaffold as a bone graft substitute. Furthermore, the biomedical applications of sheep-derived HA been studied in terms of their antimicrobial activity, bone-forming ability, and wound healing applications. Sheep-, goat-, and caprine-derived HA are still underutilized and require further research to develop commercial possibilities and sustainable raw materials for HA-based bone graft substitutes.

Abstract

Drug repositioning investigates new uses for existing drugs, including both approved and discontinued medications. This strategy offers lower failure risks, faster development times and higher success rates while reducing reliance on antibiotics. Current treatments for periodontitis focus on modulating the immune response to combat pathogens. A promising approach involves using pharmaceuticals to reduce inflammation, which is the main cause of bone resorption, and to promote regeneration. Metformin, an antidiabetic drug, can enhance alveolar bone formation. Statins, known for lowering cholesterol levels, possess antimicrobial and anti-infective properties. Bisphosphonates, used to improve bone density, can affect osteoblast and osteoclast morphology and have antibacterial properties. Melatonin, typically used for sleep disorders, is an antioxidant that reduces the expression of proinflammatory cytokines. The present review explores the multifaceted benefits of repurposing these drugs for the management of periodontal disease.

Abstract Federated learning (FL) stimulates distributed on-device computation systems to process an optimum technique efficiency by communicating local process upgrades and global method distribution from aggregation averaging procedure. On-device FL is a standard application in wireless environments, with several mobile devices participating as nodes in the FL network. Managing extensive multi-dimensional process upgrades and resource-constrained computations in large-scale heterogeneous IoT cellular networks can be challenging. This article introduces a Lifetime Maximization using Optimal Directed Acyclic Graph Federated Learning in IoT Communication Networks (LM-ODAGFL) technique. The proposed LM-ODAGFL technique utilizes FL and metaheuristic optimization algorithms for energy-effective IoT networks. The Direct Acyclic Graph (DAG) model addresses device asynchrony in FL while minimizing additional resource usage. The Archimedes Optimization Algorithm (AOA) is designed to optimize the DAG model by reducing both user energy consumption and the training loss of the FL model. The performance validation of the LM-ODAGFL technique is performed by utilizing a series of experimentations. The obtained results of the LM-ODAGFL model demonstrate superior performance by consuming significantly less energy than SDAGFL and ESDAGFL, with values ranging from 0.373 to 0.485 kJ per round on the FMNIST-Clustered dataset and 16.27 to 20.34 kJ per round on the Poets dataset, compared to 0.000 to 1.442 kJ and 0.00 to 63.89 kJ respectively.

Abstract

Background: Musculocutaneous nerve (MCN) is a mixed nerve arising from the lateral cord of brachial plexus having root values C5, 6, and 7. It supplies the muscles of the flexor compartment of the arm namely; coracobrachialis, most part of brachialis and both heads of biceps brachii. It is cutaneous to the lower lateral part of forearm. Variations in the origin, course, branching pattern, termination, and connections of MCN are very common. Knowledge about these variations is important while evaluating unusual presentations of peripheral nerve injuries, during surgical procedures such as arthroscopy of shoulder joint, corrections of fracture humerus, brachial plexus block, and so on. Aims and Objectives: The study was conducted to find out any variations in the origin, course, branching pattern of the MCN. The secondary objective was to understand about the communication of the MCN with any other nerve. Materials and Methods: A descriptive study was conducted in 60 upper limb specimens dissected from 10% formalin embalmed 30 cadavers (adult) in the Department of Anatomy, Government Medical College, Kottayam. All limbs were carefully dissected and studied about the origin, course, termination, and variations of MCN. Results: Out of 60 specimens studied, in 46 specimens MCN Originate from lateral cord, eight from medial cord, and in six from the lateral root of the median nerve (MN). In 52 specimens, MCN supplies coracobrachialis but only in 34 it pierces this muscle. In four specimens, there is a communication between MCN and MN was seen. Conclusion: The MCN has significant variations and knowledge of these variations is clinically important in diagnosis and management of peripheral nerve injuries as well as surgical interventions in the arm.

Abstract

Abstract Background Anti-HER2 therapies, including the HER2 antibody–drug conjugates (ADCs) trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1) and trastuzumab deruxtecan (T-DXd), have led to improved survival outcomes in patients with HER2-overexpressing (HER2+) metastatic breast cancer. However, intrinsic or acquired resistance to anti-HER2–based therapies remains a clinical challenge in these patients, as there is no standard of care following disease progression. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the mechanisms of resistance to T-DM1 and T-DXd in HER2+ BC patients and preclinical models and identify targets whose inhibition enhances the antitumor activity of T-DXd in HER2-directed ADC-resistant HER2+ breast cancer in vitro and in vivo. Methods Targeted DNA and whole transcriptome sequencing were performed in breast cancer patient tissue samples to investigate genetic aberrations that arose after anti-HER2 therapy. We generated T-DM1 and T-DXd–resistant HER2+ breast cancer cell lines. To elucidate their resistance mechanisms and to identify potential synergistic kinase targets for enhancing the efficacy of T-DXd, we used fluorescence in situ hybridization, droplet digital PCR, Western blotting, whole-genome sequencing, cDNA microarray, and synthetic lethal kinome RNA interference screening. In addition, cell viability, colony formation, and xenograft assays were used to determine the synergistic antitumor effect of T-DXd combinations. Results We found reduced HER2 expression in patients and amplified DNA repair–related genes in patients after anti-HER2 therapy. Reduced ERBB2 gene amplification in HER2-directed ADC–resistant HER2+ breast cancer cell lines was through DNA damage and epigenetic mechanisms. In HER2-directed ADC–resistant HER2+ breast cancer cell lines, our non-biased RNA interference screening identified the DNA repair pathway as a potential target within the canonical pathways to enhance the efficacy of T-DXd. Abstract

Abstract This study demonstrates the efficacy of employing Rhizopus oryzae fungus inoculum as a potential solution to improve soil erodibility in coastal environments. A set of unconfined compression tests is conducted on Miami Beach sand treated with a R. oryzae inoculum. Our findings suggest that the R. oryzae fungus inoculum effectively improves the stability of sand by acting as a natural binding agent. This finding aligns with previous studies that utilized different Rhizopus species, such as Rhizopus oligosporus, to improve sand properties. However, a notable difference is observed; the R. oryzae-treated sand exhibits remarkable durability, maintaining significant strength over an extended period without water or dietary supply. The durability is likely attributable to the morphological characteristics of R. oryzae that extensively branches its mycelial network. This paper shares the new discovery to the bio-geotechnics research community, potentially allowing for the customization of soil improvement process by choosing between the fast-acting R. oligosporus and the longer-lasting R. oryzae.

Abstract

Abstract Plant disease detection is a critical task in agriculture, essential for ensuring crop health and productivity. Traditional methods in this context are often labor-intensive and prone to errors, highlighting the need for automated solutions. While computer vision-based solutions have been successfully deployed in recent years for plant disease identification and localization tasks, these often operate independently, leading to suboptimal performance. It is essential to develop an integrated solution combining these two tasks for improved efficiency and accuracy. This research proposes the innovative Plant Disease Localization and Classification model based on Vision Transformer (PDLC-ViT), which integrates co-scale, co-attention, and cross-attention mechanisms and a ViT, within a Multi-Task Learning (MTL) framework. The model was trained and evaluated on the Plant Village dataset. Key hyperparameters, including learning rate, batch size, dropout ratio, and regularization factor, were optimized through a thorough grid search. Early stopping based on validation loss was employed to prevent overfitting. The PDLC-ViT model demonstrated significant improvements in plant disease localization and classification tasks. The integration of co-scale, co-attention, and cross-attention mechanisms allowed the model to capture multi-scale dependencies and enhance feature learning, leading to superior performance compared to existing models. The PDLC-ViT model evaluated on two public datasets achieved an accuracy of 99.97%, a Mean Average Precision (MAP) of 99.18%, and a Mean Average Recall (MAR) of 99.11%. These results underscore the model's exceptional precision and recall, highlighting its robustness and reliability in detecting and classifying plant diseases. The PDLC-ViT model sets a new benchmark in plant disease detection, offering a reliable and advanced tool for agricultural applications. Its ability to integrate localization and classification tasks within an MTL framework promotes timely and accurate disease management, contributing to sustainable agriculture and food security.

Abstract

Introduction: Estimating age is becoming more and more important in forensic science and dentistry. Identifying criminals, child labor problems, birth certificates, job openings, illegal immigrants, or a body whose identity is unknown are just some of the situations where estimating age is necessary. This study’s goal is to find out how to figure out a child’s chronological age between the ages of 12 and 14 by looking at panoramic X-rays and measuring how big their open tooth root tips are. Things Used and Methods: The left mandibular canine, premolars, and molars from 83 dental panoramic X-rays of patients aged 12 to 14 years were used to study tooth development. The individual tooth-root ratio (A/L) was measured using Sirona software-XG machine (Made by Dentsply Sirona, Germany) in a straight line. An estimated age was made and then matched to the real age. Results: A regression equation was used in statistical analysis to guess the age of the people. To figure out the age, 15.9973-8.465(x7) +1.650(x3) was turned into a linear regression model. Conclusion: The equation that was found in this study can be used to accurately guess the dental age of young teens in South India.

35. Determining the factors which impact management of acute poisonings due to therapeutic medicines

Abstract

Background: In a developing country such as India, intentional poisoning is associated with a high degree of morbidity and mortality. Historically, the use of agricultural poisons for attempted deliberate self-harm (DSH) has taken precedence. However, urbanization and stringent laws governing sale of agricultural chemicals, in recent years, may have shifted the focus of seekers toward commercially available therapeutic medications. Further, urbanization, high health-care seeking behavior, and poor regulation on sale of medicines, in Kerala, provide a conducive environment for such attempts. Aims and Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine the contribution of therapeutic medication toward acute poisoning as a means of DSH and the factors contributing to the same. Materials and Methods: Patients who obtained treatment for acute poisoning after DSH, between 2017 and 2023, were screened, those who employed therapeutic medication for the same were further determined. Sociodemographic details, clinical profile, and history of previous such attempts and treatment history including toxicological screening report were gathered and analyzed. Results: In our study of 154 patients arriving at the emergency department with history of DSH, 41% used therapeutic medicines for the same. Majority were women (75%) and most had a high school education (64%) or above. The most common agents were determined as paracetamol (23%) and benzodiazepine (10.6%). Tox screen was performed for 45% of patients. Organ failure developed in 36% patients with drug levels above and 42% of those with levels below the therapeutic range. However, 48% of those who did not undergo toxicological screening developed organ failure. Organ failure developed in 42% of patients, with acute liver injury being the most common culprit (25%). Management was symptomatic unless an antidote was available. Conclusion: Prescription drugs utilization for DSH was common in women and patients with higher educational status. Over-the-counter drugs and psychiatric medication were frequently used. Lack of prompt access to healthcare may contribute to organ failure. Tox-screen is recommended for drug detection.

Abstract

In this work, thermoelectric properties of Al$_{1.2}$Fe$_2$B$_2$ compound were investigated over a temperature range from 300\,K to 773\,K. Al$_{1.2}$Fe$_2$B$_2$ compound was produced by vacuum arc melting of Al, Fe, and B followed by annealing at 1323 K under argon atmosphere. The annealed ingots were subsequently crushed into powder and hot pressed at 1273 K under vacuum. The hot-pressed alloy predominantly contained Al$_{1.2}$Fe$_2$B$_2$ phase with a small fraction of FeB, which decreases further upon 0.1 \% Sb doping in Al$_{1.2}$Fe$_2$B$_2$. The pristine Al$_{1.2}$Fe$_2$B$_2$ exhibits n-type conductivity with a maximum figure of merit (zT) of 0.03 at 773\,K. The Sb doping improves the Seebeck coefficient at high temperatures and also reduces the phonon thermal conductivity across the temperature range studied. The decrease in phonon thermal conductivity is attributed to the point-defect phonon scattering due to mass fluctuation between the Fe and Sb atoms. The 0.1 at\% Sb doping at the Fe site results in improved zT of 0.056 at 773\,K in spite of its limited dissolution in Al$_{1.2}$Fe$_2$B$_2$ and forms FeSb$_2$ secondary phase., Comment: 5 Pages, 3 Figures, 1 Table

Abstract

IntroductionThe 2024 Voice AI Symposium, presented by the Bridge2AI-Voice Consortium, featured deep-dive educational workshops conducted by experts from diverse fields to explore the latest advancements in voice biomarkers and artificial intelligence (AI) applications in healthcare. Through five workshops, attendees learned about topics including international standardization of vocal biomarker data, real-world deployment of AI solutions, assistive technologies for voice disorders, best practices for voice data collection, and deep learning applications in voice analysis. These workshops aimed to foster collaboration between academia, industry, and healthcare to advance the development and implementation of voice-based AI tools.MethodsEach workshop featured a combination of lectures, case studies, and interactive discussions. Transcripts of audio recordings were generated using Whisper (Version 7.13.1) and summarized by ChatGPT (Version 4.0), then reviewed by the authors. The workshops covered various methodologies, from signal processing and machine learning operations (MLOps) to ethical concerns surrounding AI-powered voice data collection. Practical demonstrations of AI-driven tools for voice disorder management and technical discussions on implementing voice AI models in clinical and non-clinical settings provided attendees with hands-on experience.ResultsKey outcomes included the discussion of international standards to unify stakeholders in vocal biomarker research, practical challenges in deploying AI solutions outside the laboratory, review of Bridge2AI-Voice data collection processes, and the potential of AI to empower individuals with voice disorders. Additionally, presenters shared innovations in ethical AI practices, scalable machine learning frameworks, and advanced data collection techniques using diverse voice datasets. The symposium highlighted the successful integration of AI in detecting and analyzing voice signals for various health applications, with significant advancements in standardization, privacy, and clinical validation processes.DiscussionThe symposium underscored the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to address the technical, ethical, and clinical challenges in the field of voice biomarkers. While AI models have shown promise in analyzing voice data, challenges such as data variability, security, and scalability remain. Abstract

Abstract The high latitude ionospheric evolution of the May 10‐11, 2024, geomagnetic storm is investigated in terms of Total Electron Content and contextualized with Incoherent Scatter Radar and ionosonde observations. Substantial plasma lifting is observed within the initial Storm Enhanced Density plume with ionospheric peak heights increasing by 150–300 km, reaching levels of up to 630 km. Scintillation is observed within the cusp during the initial expansion phase of the storm, spreading across the auroral oval thereafter. Patch transport into the polar cap produces broad regions of scintillation that are rapidly cleared from the region after a strong Interplanetary Magnetic Field reversal at 2230UT. Strong heating and composition changes result in the complete absence of the F2‐layer on the eleventh, suffocating high latitude convection from dense plasma necessary for Tongue of Ionization and patch formation, ultimately resulting in a suppression of polar cap scintillation on the eleventh.

Abstract

Drug-resistant parasitic nematodes pose a grave threat to plants, animals, and humans. An innovative paradigm for treating parasitic nematodes is emphasized in this opinion. This approach relies on repurposing methuosis (a death characterized by accumulation of large vacuoles) inducing anticancer drugs as anthelmintics. We review drugs/chemicals that have shown to kill nematodes or cancerous cells by inducing multiple vacuoles that eventually coalesce and rupture. This perspective additionally offers a succinct summary on Structure-Activity Relationship (SAR) of methuosis-inducing small molecules. This strategy holds promise for the development of broad-spectrum anthelmintics, shedding light on shared molecular mechanisms between cancer and nematodes in response to these inducers, thereby potentially transforming both therapeutic domains.

We introduce a family of entanglement witnesses for continuous variable systems, which rely on the sole assumption that their dynamics is that of coupled harmonic oscillators at the time of the test. Entanglement is inferred from the Tsirelson nonclassicality test on one of the normal modes, without any knowledge about the state of the other mode. In each round, the protocol requires measuring only the sign of one coordinate (e.g., position) at one among several times. This dynamic-based entanglement witness is more akin to a Bell inequality than to an uncertainty relation: in particular, it does not admit false positives from classical theory. Abstract

Crop residue burning is a major source of air pollution in many parts of the world, notably South Asia. Policymakers, practitioners and researchers have invested in both measuring impacts and developing interventions to reduce burning. However, measuring the impacts of burning or the effectiveness of interventions to reduce burning requires data on where burning occurred. These data are challenging to collect in the field, both in terms of cost and feasibility. We take advantage of data from ground-based monitoring of crop residue burning in Punjab, India to explore whether burning can be detected more effectively using accessible satellite imagery. Specifically, we used 3m PlanetScope data with high temporal resolution (up to daily) as well as publicly-available Sentinel-2 data with weekly temporal resolution but greater depth of spectral information. Following an analysis of the ability of different spectral bands and burn indices to separate burned and unburned plots individually, we built a Random Forest model with those determined to provide the greatest separability and evaluated model performance with ground-verified data. Our overall model accuracy of 82-percent is favorable given the challenges presented by the measurement. Based on insights from this process, we discuss technical challenges of detecting crop residue burning from satellite imagery as well as challenges to measuring impacts, both of burning and of policy interventions.
