Recent advances in detectors for imaging and spectroscopy have afforded in situ, rapid acquisition of hyperspectral data. While electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) data acquisition speeds with electron counting are regularly reaching 400 frames per second with near-zero read noise, signal to noise ratio (SNR) remains a challenge owing to fundamental counting statistics. In order to advance understanding of transient materials phenomena during rapid acquisition EELS, trustworthy analysis of noisy spectra must be demonstrated. In this study, we applied machine learning techniques to denoise high frame rate spectra, benchmarking with slower frame rate “ground truths”. The results provide a foundation for reliable use of low SNR data acquired in rapid, in-situ spectroscopy experiments. Such a tool-set is a first step toward both automation in microscopy as well as use of these methods to interrogate otherwise poorly understood transformations.

MXenes are a growing family of 2D transition-metal carbides and nitrides, which display excellent performance in myriad of applications. Reduced dimensionality leads to emergent phenomena in quantum materials and there is a need for accelerated materials discovery of nanoscale quantum materials in reduced dimensions. Thermomechanical nanomolding is a rapid synthesis method that produces high quality single-crystalline quantum nanowires with controlled dimensions over wafer-scale sizes. Herein, we apply nanomolding to fabricate nanowires from bulk feedstock of MoP, a triple-point topological metal with extremely high conductivity that is promising for low-resistance interconnects. Surprisingly, we obtained single-crystalline Mo$_{4}$P$_{3}$ nanowires, a metastable phase at room temperature in atmospheric pressure. We thus demonstrate nanomolding can create metastable phases inaccessible by other nanomaterial syntheses and can explore a previously inaccessible synthesis space at high temperatures and pressures. Furthermore, our results suggest that the current understanding of interfacial solid diffusion for nanomolding is incomplete, providing opportunities to explore solid-state diffusion at high-pressure and high-temperature regimes in confined dimensions., 3 figures

Iron–chromium and nickel–chromium binary alloys containing sufficient quantities of chromium serve as the prototypical corrosion-resistant metals owing to the presence of a nanometre-thick protective passive oxide film1–8. Should this film be compromised by a scratch or abrasive wear, it reforms with little accompanying metal dissolution, a key criterion for good passive behaviour. This is a principal reason that stainless steels and other chromium-containing alloys are used in critical applications ranging from biomedical implants to nuclear reactor components9,10. Unravelling the compositional dependence of this electrochemical behaviour is a long-standing unanswered question in corrosion science. Herein, we develop a percolation theory of alloy passivation based on two-dimensional to three-dimensional crossover effects that accounts for selective dissolution and the quantity of metal dissolved during the initial stage of passive film formation. We validate this theory both experimentally and by kinetic Monte Carlo simulation. Our results reveal a path forward for the design of corrosion-resistant metallic alloys. A percolation theory of alloy passivation is developed accounting for selective dissolution and the quantity of metal dissolved during the primary passivation process, which provides a quantitative way for designing corrosion-resistant alloy compositions.

The increasing resistance of Cu interconnects for decreasing dimensions is a major challenge in continued downscaling of integrated circuits beyond the 7-nm technology node as it leads to unacceptable signal delays and power consumption in computing. The resistivity of Cu increases due to electron scattering at surfaces and grain boundaries of the interconnects at the nanoscale. Topological semimetals, owing to their topologically protected surface states and suppressed electron backscattering, are promising material candidates to potentially replace current Cu interconnects as low-resistance interconnects. Here, we report the attractive resistivity scaling of topological metal MoP nanowires and show that the resistivity values are comparable to those of Cu interconnects below 500 nm$^2$ cross-section areas. More importantly, we demonstrate that the dimensional scaling of MoP nanowires, in terms of line resistance versus total cross-sectional area, is superior to those of effective Cu and barrier-less Ru interconnects, suggesting MoP is an attractive solution to the current scaling challenge of Cu interconnects., Comment: 4 figures

The observation of the Higgs boson solidified the standard model of particle physics. However, explanations of anomalies (e.g. dark matter) rely on further symmetry breaking calling for an undiscovered axial Higgs mode. In condensed matter the Higgs was seen in magnetic, superconducting and charge density wave(CDW) systems. Uncovering a low energy mode's vector properties is challenging, requiring going beyond typical spectroscopic or scattering techniques. Here, we discover an axial Higgs mode in the CDW system RTe3 using the interference of quantum pathways. In RTe3 (R=La,Gd), the electronic ordering couples bands of equal or different angular momenta. As such, the Raman scattering tensor associated to the Higgs mode contains both symmetric and antisymmetric components, which can be excited via two distinct, but degenerate pathways. This leads to constructive or destructive interference of these pathways, depending on the choice of the incident and Raman scattered light polarization. The qualitative behavior of the Raman spectra is well-captured by an appropriate tight-binding model including an axial Higgs mode. The elucidation of the antisymmetric component provides direct evidence that the Higgs mode contains an axial vector representation (i.e. a pseudo-angular momentum) and hints the CDW in RTe3 is unconventional. Thus we provide a means for measuring collective modes quantum properties without resorting to extreme experimental conditions.

Nanoporous metals (np-M) have emerged as promising materials owing to their high surface area-to-volume ratio and electrical/thermal conductivity. There exists a group of processing methodologies by which np-M are formed through a top-down nanostructure evolution driven by the selective removal of a sacrificial component, all of which are a variation of dealloying. Nanoporosity evolution through current dealloying methodologies, however, is governed by strict requirements including sufficient separation in “reactivity” of the participating components and a homogeneous solid solution precursor alloy. This limits the viable alloy systems that may be used and the range of np-M's that may be formed. Here, we report thermal decomposition of crystalline transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) as a new processing methodology for np-M formation, adding to the spectrum of dealloying protocols. We demonstrate application of this process to the formation of a broader class of np-M including W, Re, Mo, and Ta with feature sizes below 100 nm. The presented facile thermal treatment of TMDs offers a new methodology for the evolution of nanoporosity in a broad range of metals.

Polymer micelles were formed using thiol-epoxide “click” chemistry to trigger functionalization-induced self-assembly (FISA) of block copolymers by modifying a reactive glycidyl methacrylate block with solvophobes. Ambient conditions, polymer concentrations up to 10 wt%, and an array of functional thiols were found effective for nanoparticle synthesis. Real-time analysis enabled direct observation of the self-assembly process, revealing mechanistic details and a critical degree of functionalization required for micellization.

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides and nitrides known as MXenes have shown attractive functionalities such as high electronic conductivity, a wide range of optical properties, versatile transition metal and surface chemistry, and solution processability. Although extensively studied computationally, the magnetic properties of this large family of 2D materials await experimental exploration. 2D magnetic materials have recently attracted significant interest as model systems to understand low-dimensional magnetism and for potential spintronic applications. Here, we report on synthesis of Cr2TiC2Tx MXene and a detailed study of its magnetic as well as electronic properties. Using a combination of magnetometry, synchrotron X-ray linear dichroism, and field- and angular-dependent magnetoresistance measurements, we find clear evidence of a magnetic transition in Cr2TiC2Tx at approximately 30 K, which is not present in its bulk layered carbide counterpart (Cr2TiAlC2 MAX phase). This work presents the first experimental evidence of a magnetic transition in a MXene material and provides an exciting opportunity to explore magnetism in this large family of 2D materials.

Topological semimetals (TSMs) possess topologically protected surface states near the Fermi level with high carrier densities and high mobilities, holding distinct potential for low-dissipation on-chip interconnects that may outperform current copper interconnects for continued dimensional scaling of CMOS technologies. To translate the exotic properties of TSMs into practical interconnects, developments of high precision synthesis for these emergent semimetals are essential. Here, we report the synthesis of TSM molybdenum diphosphide (MoP2) nanowires with controlled dimensions and crystallinity. By varying the growth temperature in chemical vapor depositions (CVD), we achieve polycrystalline MoP2 as well as single-crystalline MoP2−x nanostructures, which are confined in highly anisotropic forms on crystalline substrates with a miscut angle of 1°. The measured metallic properties, such as room temperature resistivity and temperature-dependent resistance, of the synthesized MoP2 nanostructures show promising dimensional effects for interconnect applications, suggesting potential enhancement of topological surface states in electron transport at reduced dimensions. The demonstration of CVD-grown MoP2 nanowires provides opportunities for careful investigations of design rules for TSMs-based nanoscale interconnects.

Abstract Earth-abundant and non-toxic Kesterite-based Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) thin film solar cells are successfully fabricated on flexible Molybdenum (Mo) foil substrates by an electrodeposition-annealing route. A well-adherent, densely packed, homogeneous, compact, and mirror-like CZT precursor is initially produced through electrodeposition by using a rotating working electrode. Subsequently, the co-electrodeposited CuZnSn (CZT) precursor is sulfurized in quartz tube furnace at 550 °C for 2 h in N2 atmosphere with the presence of elemental sulfur in order to form CZTS. Different characterization techniques like XRD, SEM, HR-TEM, Raman, and Photoluminescence demonstrate that almost phase-pure CZTS formed after sulfurization. A flexible Al/Al-ZnO/i-ZnO/CdS/CZTS/Mo foil solar cell is produced, where CdS is deposited by chemical bath deposition and transparent conducting oxide (TCO) is deposited by DC sputtering. The CZTS solar device shows a 0.55% power conversion efficiency on flexible Mo foil substrate and it constitutes the first prototype of this kind of solar cell produced by electrodeposition-annealing route without any surface modification of the Mo substrate. Here we explore the use of scanning electron diffraction coupled with electron atomic pair distribution function analysis (ePDF) to understand the local order as a function of position in a complex multicomponent system, a hot rolled, Ni-encapsulated, Zr$_{65}$Cu$_{17.5}$Ni$_{10}$Al$_{7.5}$ bulk metallic glass (BMG), with a spatial resolution of 3 nm. We show that it is possible to gain insight into the chemistry and chemical clustering/ordering tendency in different regions of the sample, including in the vicinity of nano-scale crystallites that are identified from virtual dark field images and in heavily deformed regions at the edge of the BMG. In addition to simpler analysis, unsupervised machine learning was used to extract partial PDFs from the material, modeled as a quasi-binary alloy, and map them in space. These maps allowed key insights not only into the local average composition, as validated by EELS, but also a unique insight into chemical short-range ordering tendencies in different regions of the sample during formation. The experiments are straightforward and rapid and, unlike spectroscopic measurements, don't require energy filters on the instrument. We spatially map different quantities of interest (QoI's), defined as scalars that can be computed directly from positions and widths of ePDF peaks or parameters refined from fits to the patterns. We developed a flexible and rapid data reduction and analysis software framework that allows experimenters to rapidly explore images of the sample on the basis of different QoI's. The power and flexibility of this approach are explored and described in detail. Because of the fact that we are getting spatially resolved images of the nanoscale structure obtained from ePDFs we call this approach scanning nano-structure electron microscopy (SNEM), and we believe that it will be powerful and useful extension of current 4D-STEM methods.

Topological crystalline insulator tin telluride (SnTe) provides a rich playground to examine interactions of correlated electronic states, such as ferroelectricity, topological surface states, and superconductivity. Making SnTe into nanowires further induces novel electronic states due to one-dimensional (1D) confinement effects. Thus, for transport measurements, SnTe nanowires must be made narrow in their diameters to ensure the 1D confinement and phase coherence of the topological surface electrons. This study reports a facile growth method to produce narrow SnTe nanowires with a high yield using alloy nanoparticles as growth catalysts. The average diameter of the SnTe nanowires grown using the alloy nanoparticles is 85 nm, nearly a factor of three reduction from the previous average diameter of 240 nm using gold nanoparticles as growth catalysts. Transport measurements reveal the effect of the nanowire diameter on the residual resistance ratio and magnetoresistance. Particularly, the ferroelectric transition temperature for SnTe is observed to change systematically with the nanowire diameter. In situ cryogenic cooling of narrow SnTe nanowires in a transmission electron microscope directly reveals the cubic to rhombohedral structural transition, which is associated with the ferroelectric transition. Thus, these narrow SnTe nanowires represent a model system to study electronic states arising from the 1D confinement, such as 1D topological superconductivity as well as a potential multi-band superconductivity., 5 figures

The phase transitions of two-dimensional (2D) materials are key to the operation of many devices with applications including energy storage and low power electronics. Nanoscale confinement in the form of reduced thickness can modulate the phase transitions of 2D materials both in their thermodynamics and kinetics. Here, using in situ Raman spectroscopy we demonstrate that reducing the thickness of MoS2 below five layers slows the kinetics of the phase transition from 2H- to 1T′-MoS2 induced by the electrochemical intercalation of lithium. We observe that the growth rate of 1T′ domains is suppressed in thin MoS2 supported by SiO2, and attribute this growth suppression to increased interfacial effects as the thickness is reduced below 5 nm. The suppressed kinetics can be reversed by placing MoS2 on a 2D hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) support, which readily facilitates the release of strain induced by the phase transition. Additionally, we show that the irreversible conversion of intercalated 1T′-MoS2 into Li2S and Mo is also thickness-dependent and the stability of 1T′-MoS2 is significantly increased below five layers, requiring a much higher applied electrochemical potential to break down 1T′-MoS2 into Li2S and Mo nanoclusters.

Tailoring the structure of the electrode material through chemical insertion of charge-carrying ions emerged as an efficient approach leading to enhanced performance of energy storage devices. Here, we for the first time report the effect of chemically preintercalated K+ ions on electrochemical charge storage properties of bilayered vanadium oxide (δ-V2O5) as a cathode in nonaqueous K-ion batteries, a low-cost alternative to Li-ion batteries, which is attractive for large-scale energy storage. δ-K0.42V2O5·0.25H2O with expanded interlayer spacing of 9.65 A exhibited record high initial discharge capacity of 268 mAh·g–1 at a current rate of C/50 and 226 mAh·g–1 at a current rate of C/15. K-preintercalated bilayered vanadium oxide showed capacity retention of 74% after 50 cycles at a constant current of C/15 and 58% capacity retention when the current rate was increased from C/15 to 1C. Advances in electrocatalyst functionality have resulted from the evolution of complex nanostructured materials with increasing degrees of compositional and morphological complexity. Focused almost entirely on pushing the boundaries of intrinsic activity, electrocatalytic material development often overlooks stability. Operating in parallel to the typical mechanisms of electrochemical material degradation, three-dimensional nanomaterials are susceptible to an additional degradation process known as coarsening. Driven by the reduction of surface free energy, surface diffusion evolves the nanoporous morphology toward a solid spherical particle. Here, using nanoporous NiPt alloy nanoparticles (np-NiPt/C) as a representative three-dimensional electrocatalytic material, we demonstrate that coarsening is the dominant mechanism of degradation as observed during accelerated durability testing (ADT). Deficiency in insulin secretion and function that characterize type 2 diabetes often requires administration of extraneous insulin, leading to injection-site amyloidosis. Insulin aggregation at neutral pH is not well understood. Although oligomer formation is believed to play an important role, insulin oligomers have not been fully characterized yet. Here, we elucidate similarities and differences between in vitro insulin aggregation at acidic and neutral pH for a range of insulin concentrations (2.5-100 μM) by using kinetic thioflavin T fluorescence, circular dichroism, atomic force and electron microscopy imaging. Importantly, we characterize the size distribution of insulin oligomers at different assembly stages by the application of covalent cross-linking and gel electrophoresis. Our results show that at the earliest assembly stage, oligomers comprise up to 40% and 70% of soluble insulin at acidic and neutral pH, respectively. While the highest oligomer order increases with insulin concentration at acidic pH, the opposite tendency is observed at neutral pH, where oligomers up to heptamers are formed in 10 μM insulin. These findings suggest that oligomers may be on- and off-pathway assemblies for insulin at acidic and neutral pH, respectively. Agitation, which is required to induce insulin aggregation at neutral pH, is shown to increase fibril formation rate and fibrillar mass both by an order of magnitude. Insulin incubated under agitated conditions at neutral pH rapidly aggregates into large micrometer-sized aggregates, which may be of physiological relevance and provides insight into injection-site amyloidosis and toxic pulmonary aggregates induced by administration of extraneous insulin.

In many cases, electron counting with direct detection sensors offers improved resolution, lower noise, and higher pixel density compared to conventional, indirect detection sensors for electron microscopy applications. Direct detection technology has previously been utilized, with great success, for imaging and diffraction, but potential advantages for spectroscopy remain unexplored. Here we compare the performance of a direct detection sensor operated in counting mode and an indirect detection sensor (scintillator/fiber-optic/CCD) for electron energy-loss spectroscopy. Clear improvements in measured detective quantum efficiency and combined energy resolution/energy field-of-view are offered by counting mode direct detection, showing promise for efficient spectrum imaging, low-dose mapping of beam-sensitive specimens, trace element analysis, and time-resolved spectroscopy. Despite the limited counting rate imposed by the readout electronics, we show that both core-loss and low-loss spectral acquisition are practical. These developments will benefit biologists, chemists, physicists, and materials scientists alike.

Fused filament fabrication three-dimensional (3D) printers have been shown to emit ultrafine particles (UFPs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Previous studies have quantified bulk 3D printer particle and VOC emission rates, as well as described particle chemical composition via ex situ analysis. Here, we present size-resolved aerosol composition measurements from in situ aerosol mass spectrometry and ex situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Particles were sampled for in situ analysis during acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and polylactic acid (PLA) 3D printing activities and ex situ analysis during ABS printing. We examined the effect of a high-efficiency particulate air filter attachment on ABS emissions and particle chemical composition and demonstrate that filtration was effective in preventing UFP emissions and that particles sampled during filtered prints did not have a high contribution (∼4% vs ∼10%) from aromatic ions in the mass spectrum. Ex situ analysis of particles collected during ABS printing was performed via TEM and electron energy loss spectroscopy, which indicated a high level of sp2 bonding type consistent with polymeric styrene. One 3D print with PLA resulted in an aerosol mass size distribution with a peak at ∼300 nm. Unfiltered ABS prints resulted in particle mass size distributions with peak diameters of ∼100 nm.

MXenes have shown promise in myriad applications, such as energy storage, catalysis, EMI shielding, among many others. However, MXene oxidation in aqueous colloidal suspensions when stored in water at ambient conditions remains a challenge. It is now shown that by simply capping the edges of individual MXene flakes, Ti3 C2 Tz and V2 CTz , by polyanions such as polyphosphates, polysilicates or polyborates, it is possible to quite significantly reduce their propensity for oxidation even when held in aerated water for weeks. This breakthrough resulted from the realization that the edges of MXene sheets are positively charged. It is thus an example of selectively functionalizing the edges differently from the MXene sheet surfaces.

Here we present for the first time the use of gyrotron beam for selective annealing/activation of implanted Mg in bulk GaN films. Samples with 1 μm uGaN epi-Iayer grown by MOCVD on HVPE bulk n+GaN substrates were implanted with Mg (1 x 1019 cm−3) to a target depth of 500 nm. A systematic investigation of annealing temperature, N 2 overpressure, surface capping layer, and sample orientation to the beam are presented. Post-implantation, volumetric lattice deformation was recovered by performing continuous annealing at temperatures $>$ 1100 °C for 30 s. Both AIN capped and uncapped samples were studied. It is shown that the surface of uncapped GaN samples which were annealed at 1100 °C in 40 bar N 2 overpressure remained intact. Photoluminescence spectroscopy was performed and confirmed the incorporation of Mg in substitutional sites with this technique, along with formation of large density of nitrogen vacancy defects.
