Abstract How Cooper pairs form and condense has been the main challenge in the physics of copper-oxide high-temperature superconductors. Great efforts have been made in the ‘underdoped’ region of the phase diagram, through doping a Mott insulator or cooling a strange metal. However, there is still no consensus on how superconductivity emerges when electron-electron correlations dominate and the Fermi surface is missing. To address this issue, here we carry out high-resolution resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and scanning tunneling microscopy studies on prototype cuprates Bi2Sr2Ca0.6Dy0.4Cu2O8+δ near the onset of superconductivity, combining bulk and surface, momentum- and real-space information. We show that an incipient charge order exists in the antiferromagnetic regime down to 0.04 holes per CuO2 unit, entangled with a particle-hole asymmetric pseudogap. The charge order induces an intensity anomaly in the bond-buckling phonon branch, which exhibits an abrupt increase once the system enters the superconducting dome. Our results suggest that the Cooper pairs grow out of a charge-ordered insulating state, and then condense accompanied by an enhanced interplay between charge excitations and electron-phonon coupling.

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are essential to the reliable high-temperature operation of gas turbines and engines. They comprise a ceramic top coat (TC), a metallic bond coat (BC), and a superalloy substrate. Metallic BCs are common, but they require a minimal difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between the TC and substrate. Among ceramic materials, MAX phases have high CTE. This study reports our use of ab initio calculations to assess the suitability of MAX phases as TBCs. We model Nb-based MAX phases with 211 and 312 structures that have Al or Si at the A sites and C or N at the X sites. We use the quasi-harmonic approximation to calculate the Young's moduli and CTEs of the materials with respect to temperature. The Nb2SiN MAX phase appears as the most suitable for use as a BC between various ceramic TCs and an Inconel-718 substrate. It is predicted to be effective in relieving thermal stresses due to its high CTE of 10.882 × 10−⁶ K−1 at 1273 K. The results indicate that carbide MAX phases with high Young's modulus and low CTE should be used with caution. They may not accommodate thermal stresses as effectively, potentially leading to material failure or reduced performance. Overall, our study indicates the potential of Nb-based MAX structures for use as BCs.

Abstract Magnetic frustration is a route for novel ground states, including spin liquids and spin ices. Such frustration can be introduced through either lattice geometry or incompatible exchange interactions. Here, we find that epitaxial strain is an effective tool for tuning antiferromagnetic exchange interactions in a square-lattice system. By studying the magnon excitations in La2NiO4 films using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we show that the magnon displays substantial dispersion along the antiferromagnetic zone boundary, at energies that depend on the lattice of the film’s substrate. Using first principles simulations and an effective spin model, we demonstrate that the antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbour coupling is a consequence of the two-orbital nature of La2NiO4. Altogether, we illustrate that compressive epitaxial strain enhances this coupling and, as a result, increases the level of incompatibility between exchange interactions within a model square-lattice system.

Abstract Strongly correlated materials respond sensitively to external perturbations such as strain, pressure, and doping. In the recently discovered superconducting infinite-layer nickelates, the superconducting transition temperature can be enhanced via only ~ 1% compressive strain-tuning with the root of such enhancement still being elusive. Using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), we investigate the magnetic excitations in infinite-layer PrNiO2 thin films grown on two different substrates, namely SrTiO3 (STO) and (LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2TaAlO6)0.7 (LSAT) enforcing different strain on the nickelates films. The magnon bandwidth of PrNiO2 shows only marginal response to strain-tuning, in sharp contrast to the enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature T c in the doped superconducting samples. These results suggest the bandwidth of spin excitations of the parent compounds is similar under strain while T c in the doped ones is not, and thus provide important empirics for the understanding of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates.

Introduction Various strategies aim to better assess risks and refine prevention for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), who vary in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. However, the prognostic value of personality and its association with lifestyle factors remain elusive.Research design and methods We identified 8794 patients with T2DM from the UK Biobank database between 2006 and 2010 and followed them up until the end of 2021. We assessed personality traits using the Big Five proxies derived from UK Biobank data: sociability, warmth, diligence, curiosity, and nervousness. Healthy lifestyle behaviors were determined from information about obesity, smoking status, and physical activity. The primary outcome was a composite of incident CVD, including myocardial infarction (MI), ischemic stroke (IS), atrial fibrillation (AF), and heart failure (HF).Results During a median follow-up of 13.6 years, a total of 2110 patients experienced CVDs. Among personality traits, diligence was significantly associated with a reduced risk of primary and secondary outcomes. The adjusted HRs with 95% CIs were: composite CVD, 0.93 (0.89–0.97); MI 0.90 (0.82–1.00); IS 0.83 (0.74–0.94); AF 0.92 (0.85–0.98); HF 0.84 (0.76–0.91). Healthy lifestyle behaviors significantly reduced the risk of composite CVDs in groups with high and low diligence. The findings of a structural equation model showed that diligence directly affected the risk of the primary outcome or indirectly by modifying lifestyle behaviors.Conclusion This study revealed which personality traits can influence CVD risk during T2DM and how patients might benefit from adopting healthy lifestyle behaviors in relation to personality.

Abstract The immune escape of Omicron variants significantly subsides by the third dose of an mRNA vaccine. However, it is unclear how Omicron variant-neutralizing antibodies develop under repeated vaccination. We analyze blood samples from 41 BNT162b2 vaccinees following the course of three injections and analyze their B-cell receptor (BCR) repertoires at six time points in total. The concomitant reactivity to both ancestral and Omicron receptor-binding domain (RBD) is achieved by a limited number of BCR clonotypes depending on the accumulation of somatic hypermutation (SHM) after the third dose. Our findings suggest that SHM accumulation in the BCR space to broaden its specificity for unseen antigens is a counterprotective mechanism against virus variant immune escape.

Abstract There is growing evidence that neonatal porcine islet-like cell clusters (NPCCs) isolated from piglets can be used to treat type 1 diabetes in humans. However, graft rejection is a common complication in humans owing to the prevalence of xenoantigens in porcine. Therefore, researchers have investigated various islet encapsulation techniques that could protect against these antigens. To this end, this study presents a robust nano-encapsulation method based on bifunctional polymersomes (PSomes), in which N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) and maleimide (Mal) groups conjugated to the PSomes terminal interact with the amine and thiol groups on the surface of NPCCs to induce dual targeting via two covalent bonds. The findings indicate that the ratio of NHS to Mal on PSomes is optimal for dual targeting. Moreover, triiodothyronine (T3) is known to promotes pancreatic islet maturation and differentiation of endocrine cells into beta cells. T3 encapsulated in PSomes is shown to increase the glucose sensitivity of NPCCs and enhance insulin secretion from NPCCs. Furthermore, improvements in the nano-encapsulation efficiency and insulin-secreting capability of NPCCs through dual targeting via dual-Psomes are demonstrated. In conclusion, the proposed nano-encapsulation technique could pave the way for significant advances in islet nano-encapsulation and the imprevement of NPCC immaturity via T3 release.

This study proposes an effective dynamic OHT routing approach to handle a substantial volume of wafer transport in a modern large semiconductor fabrication plant. The proposed approach aims to overcome challenges faced by previous approaches whose applicability is limited in conditions where the underlying distribution of traffic conditions varies over a short period. The approach comprises two models to explicitly approximate the congestion-aware travel times of different parts of the candidate route based on the current rail conditions, to evaluate the traffic conditions when routing. First, the local path approximation model heuristically evaluates the travel time of paths within a short range. Second, the global path approximation model evaluates the travel time of a distant range using a deep neural network. The simulation experiments show that the proposed approach outperforms the benchmark algorithms regarding delivery time and throughput, exhibiting 11.34% lower delivery time compared to a reinforcement-learning-based benchmark model. The proposed approach successfully integrates environmental information to evaluate congestion in a complex fab and optimize the routes of a large fleet of OHTs while balancing the traffic throughout a dynamic system.

Abstract Background The predictive relationship between mild-to-moderate alcohol consumption and the risk of incident atrial fibrillation (AF) remains controversial. Objective We investigated whether the relationship between alcohol consumption and the risk of incident AF could be associated with the genetic predisposition to alcohol metabolism. Methods A total of 399,329 subjects with genetic data from the UK Biobank database, enrolled between 2006 and 2010, were identified and followed for incident AF until 2021. Genetic predisposition to alcohol metabolism was stratified according to the polygenic risk score (PRS) tertiles. Alcohol consumption was categorized as non-drinkers, mild-to-moderate drinkers (< 30 g/day), and heavy drinkers (≥ 30 g/day). Results During the follow-up (median 12.2 years), 19,237 cases of AF occurred. When stratified by PRS tertiles, there was a significant relationship between genetic predisposition to alcohol metabolism and actual alcohol consumption habits (P < 0.001). Mild-to-moderate drinkers showed a decreased risk of AF (HR 0.96, 95% CI 0.92–0.99), and heavy drinkers showed an increased risk of AF (HR 1.06, 95% CI 1.02–1.10) compared to non-drinkers. When stratified according to PRS tertiles for genetic predisposition to alcohol metabolism, mild-to-moderate drinkers had equivalent AF risks, and heavy drinkers showed increased AF risk in the low PRS tertile group. However, mild-to-moderate drinkers had decreased AF risks and heavy drinkers showed similar risks of AF in the middle/high PRS tertile groups. Conclusions Differential associations between alcohol consumption habits and incident AF across genetic predisposition to alcohol metabolism were observed; individuals with genetic predisposition to low alcohol metabolism were more susceptible to AF.

To address the rapidly growing demand for high performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the development of high-capacity anode materials should focus on the practical perspective of a facile synthetic process. In this work, iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) in situ grown on the surface of reduced graphene oxide (rGO), denoted as Fe3O4 NPs@rGO, were prepared through a facile one-pot synthesis under the wet-colloidal conditions. The synthesized Fe3O4 NPs showed that uniform Fe3O4 NPs, with a size of around 9 nm, were distributed on the rGO surfaces. When applied as an anode material for LIBs, the Fe3O4 NPs@rGO anode revealed a high reversible capacity of 1191 mAh g−1 at 1.0 A g−1 after 200 cycles. It also exhibited excellent rate performance, achieving 608 mAh g−1 at a current density of 5.0 A g−1 over 500 cycles, with improved electronic and ionic conductivities due to the rGO template. This suggested that practically available anode materials can be developed through our one-pot synthesis by in situ growing the Fe3O4 NPs.

– The authors estimate systemic risk in the Korean economy using the econometric measures of commonality and connectedness applied to stock returns. To assess potential systemic risk concerns arising from the high concentration of the economy in large business groups and a few export-oriented sectors, the authors perform three levels of estimation using individual stocks, business groups, and industry returns. The results show that the measures perform well over the study’s sample period by indicating heightened levels of commonality and interconnectedness during crisis periods. In out-of-sample tests, the measures can predict future losses in the stock market during the crises. The authors also provide the recent readings of their measures at the market, chaebol, and industry levels. Although the measures indicate systemic risk is not a major concern in Korea, as they tend to be at the lowest level since 1998, there is an increasing trend in commonality and connectedness since 2017. Samsung and SK exhibit increasing degrees of commonality and connectedness, perhaps because of their heavy dependence on a few major member firms. Commonality in the finance industry has not subsided since the financial crisis, suggesting that systemic risk is still a concern in the banking sector.

Myasthenia Gravis (MG) patients with anti-acetylcholine receptor (AChR) antibodies frequently show hyperplastic thymi with ectopic germinal centers, where autoreactive B cells proliferate with the aid of T cells. In this study, thymus and peripheral blood (PB) samples were collected from ten AChR antibody-positive MG patients. T cell receptor (TCR) repertoires were analyzed using next-generation sequencing (NGS), and compared with that of an age and sex matched control group generated from a public database. Certain V genes and VJ gene recombination pairs were significantly upregulated in the TCR chains of αβ-T cells in the PB of MG patients compared to the control group. Furthermore, the TCR chains found in the thymi of MG patients had a weighted distribution to longer CDR3 lengths when compared to the PB of MG patients, and the TCR beta chains (TRB) in the MG group's PB showed increased clonality encoded by one upregulated V gene. When TRB sequences were sub-divided into groups based on their CDR3 lengths, certain groups showed decreased clonality in the MG group's PB compared to the control group's PB. Finally, we demonstrated that stereotypic MG patient-specific TCR clonotypes co-exist in both the PB and thymi at a much higher frequency than that of the clonotypes confined to the PB. These results strongly suggest the existence of a biased T cell-mediated immune response in MG patients, as observed in other autoimmune diseases.

While it is widely believed that high-temperature superconductivity in cuprate materials arises from an intertwined interplay between charge and spin fluctuations, the microscopic coupling between charge and spin degrees of freedom still remains a mystery in these materials. Here, the authors profit from neutron scattering with superior beam focusing to probe the subtle spin-density wave order under uniaxial pressure, and demonstrate that charge and spin orders respond to the external tuning parameter in the same manner.

Messenger RNA (mRNA) therapies have emerged as potent and personalized alternatives to conventional DNA-based therapies. However, their therapeutic potential is frequently constrained by their molecular instability, susceptibility to degradation, and inefficient cellular delivery. This study presents the nanoparticle “ChargeSome” as a novel solution. ChargeSomes are designed to protect mRNAs from degradation by ribonucleases (RNases) and enable cell uptake, allowing mRNAs to reach the cytoplasm for protein expression via endosome escape. We evaluated the physicochemical properties of ChargeSomes using 1H nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier-transform infrared, and dynamic light scattering. ChargeSomes formulated with a 9:1 ratio of mPEG-b-PLL to mPEG-b-PLL-SA demonstrated superior cell uptake and mRNA delivery efficiency. These ChargeSomes demonstrated minimal cytotoxicity in various in vitro structures, suggesting their potential safety for therapeutic applications. Inherent pH sensitivity enables precise mRNA release in acidic environments and structurally protects the encapsulated mRNA from external threats. Their design led to endosome rupture and efficient mRNA release into the cytoplasm by the proton sponge effect in acidic endosome environments. In conclusion, ChargeSomes have the potential to serve as effective secure mRNA delivery systems. Their combination of stability, protection, and delivery efficiency makes them promising tools for the advancement of mRNA-based therapeutics and vaccines.

Abstract Bifunctional hybrid anodes (BHAs), which are both a high‐performance active host material for lithium‐ion storage as well as a guiding agent for homogeneous lithium metal nucleation and growth, exhibit significant potential as anodes for next‐generation high‐energy‐density lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). In this study, sulfur‐doped hard carbon nanosphere assemblies (S‐HCNAs) were prepared through a hydrothermal treatment of a liquid organic precursor, followed by high‐temperature thermal annealing with elemental sulfur for application as BHAs for LIBs. In a carbonate‐based electrolyte containing fluoroethylene carbonate additive, the S‐HCNAs showed high lithium‐ion storage capacities in sloping as well as plateau voltage sections, good rate capabilities, and stable cyclabilities. In addition, high average Coulombic efficiencies (CEs) of ~96.9% were achieved for dual lithium‐ion and lithium metal storage cycles. In the LIB full‐cell tests with typical NCM811 cathodes, the S‐HCNA‐based BHAs containing ~400 mA h g−1 of excess lithium led to high energy and power densities of ~500 W h kg−1 and ~1695 W kg−1, respectively, and a stable cycling performance with ~100% CEs was achieved.

Maragoni microswimmers show the advantage of self-propulsion but their development is limited by fabrication techniques. Here, the authors use a photopatterning method which allows for a high throughput production of maragoni microswimmers with multiple functional parts and distinct materials properties.

A new hydrocarbon-based (HC) composite membrane was developed using liquid crystal polymer (LCP)-nonwoven fabrics for application in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). A copolymer of sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) with a sulfonation degree of 50 mol% (SPAES50) was utilized as an ionomer for the HC membranes and impregnated into the LCP-nonwoven fabrics without any surface treatment of the LCP. The physical interlocking structure between the SPAES50 and LCP-nonwoven fabrics was investigated, validating the outstanding mechanical properties and dimensional stability of the composite membrane in comparison to the pristine membrane. In addition, the through-plane proton conductivity of the composite membrane at 80 °C was only 15% lower than that of the pristine membrane because of the defect-free impregnation state, minimizing the decrease in the proton conductivity caused by the non-proton conductive LCP. During the electrochemical evaluation, the superior cell performance of the composite membrane was evident, with a current density of 5.41 A/cm2 at 1.9 V, compared to 4.65 A/cm2 for the pristine membrane, which can be attributed to the smaller membrane resistance of the composite membrane. From the results of the degradation rates, the prepared composite membrane also showed enhanced cell efficiency and durability during the PEMWE operations.

This paper is a survey of recent academic developments in the literature on green bonds, which have become an important financial instrument in socially responsible investment. This study provides a review of papers that study the market pricing of green bonds, the economic and environmental effects of green bond financing, as well as legal and institutional issues in the green bond market. The literature on market pricing focuses mainly on the existence of greenium, which represents the extent to which green bonds carry a price premium over otherwise identical non-green counterparts. The literature on the economic and environmental effects mainly concerns stock market reaction to green bond issuance and associated economic value implications to other stakeholders, as well as investment in green projects. This paper discusses current issues in the green-bond market and avenues for future research.

As the market for electric vehicles and portable electronic devices continues to grow rapidly, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have emerged as energy storage systems to replace lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, sodium-ion is heavier and larger than lithium-ion, resulting in volume expansion and slower ion transfer. It is necessary to find suitable anode materials with high capacity and stability. In addition, wearable electronics are starting to be commercialized, requiring a binder-free electrode used in flexible batteries. In this work, we synthesized nano flake-like VSe2 using organic precursor and combined it with MWCNT as carbonaceous material. VSe2@MWCNT was mixed homogenously using sonication and fabricated film electrodes without a binder and substrate via vacuum filter. The hybrid electrode exhibited high-rate capability and stable cycling performance with a discharge capacity of 469.1 mAhg−1 after 200 cycles. Furthermore, VSe2@MWCNT exhibited coulombic efficiency of ~99.7%, indicating good cycle stability. Additionally, VSe2@MWCNT showed a predominant 85.5% of capacitive contribution at a scan rate of 1 mVs−1 in sodiation/desodiation process. These results showed that VSe2@MWCNT is a suitable anode material for flexible SIBs.

One of the most effective cost reduction and green engineering projects is to introduce organic compounds to electrode materials instead of expensive inorganic-based materials. In this work, derivatives of perylene diimide substituted with amino acids (PDI_AAs) showed the characteristics of redox-active organic compounds and were, therefore, used as cathode materials of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Among the as-synthesized PDI_AAs, the L-alanine-substituted PDI (PDI_A) showed the most improved cycling performances of 86 mAhg−1 over 150 cycles with retention of 95% at 50 mAg−1. Furthermore, at a high current density of 500 mAg−1, PDI_A exhibited a long-term cycling performance of 47 mAhg−1 (retention to 98%) over 5000 cycles. In addition, ex situ attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR FT-IR) analysis of electrodes at various charging states showed the mechanism of the charge-discharge process of PDI_A.

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs), a type of electroactive polymers (EAPs), are smart materials that are used in various fields such as artificial muscles and biomimetic robots. In this study, graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), which are conductive carbon fillers, were added to a widely used DEA, namely, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), to improve its low actuated strain. Four grades of GNPs were used: H5, H25, M5, and M25 (here, the number following the letter indicates the average particle size of the GNPs in μm). The average layer thickness of the H grade is 13–14 nm and that of the M grade is 5–7 nm. PDMS composites were prepared by adding 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 wt% of each GNP, following which the mechanical properties, dielectric properties, and actuated strain of the composites were measured. The mechanical properties were found to increase as the particle size increased. Regarding the dielectric characteristics, it was found that the higher the aspect ratio of the filler, the easier the formation of a micro-capacitor network in the composite—this led to an increase in the dielectric constant. In addition, the higher amounts of GNPs in the composites also led to an increase in the dielectric constant. For the actuated strain analysis, the electromechanical sensitivity was calculated using the ratio of the dielectric constant to the Young’s modulus, which is proportional to the strain. However, it was found that when the loss tangent was high, the performance of the actuated strain decreased owing to the conversion of electric energy into thermal energy and leakage current loss. From 2014 to 2020, a full-scale horizontal well was operated to investigate the performance of full-scale riverbank filtration (RBF) in the Nakdong River in Korea, which is significantly impacted by the effluents from sewage treatment plants. In this study, an individual lateral full-scale horizontal collector well was investigated for the first time in Korea, and its performance was determined based on the turbidity and levels of iron, total nitrogen, dissolved organic matter, and four selected trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) (tebuconazole, hexaconazole, iprobenfos, and isoprothiolane) in the RBF and Nakdong River. The turbidity of the river was high with an average of 10.8 NTU, while that of the riverbank filtrate was 0.5 NTU or less on average. The average dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations were 2.5 mg/L in the river water and 1.4 mg/L in the riverbank filtrate, which indicated a 44% reduction in DOC content during the RBF. Out of the 10 laterals, 8 laterals exhibited similar levels of iron, manganese, total nitrogen, DOC, and total hardness, electrical conductivity, and turbidity. Herein, we developed polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based nanoporous composite membranes incorporating aluminum diethylphosphinate (ADEP) for use as a heat-resistant and flame-retardant separator in high-performance and safe lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). ADEP is phosphorus-rich, thermally stable, and flame retardant, and it can effectively suppress the combustibility of PAN nanofibers. Nanofibrous membranes were obtained by electrospinning, and the content of ADEP varied from 0 to 20 wt%. From the vertical burning test, it was demonstrated that the flame retardancy of the composite membranes was enhanced when more than 5 wt% of ADEP was added to PAN, potentially increasing the safety level of LIBs. Moreover, the composite membrane showed higher ionic conductivity and electrolyte uptake (0.83 mS/cm and 137%) compared to those of commercial polypropylene (PP) membranes (Celgard 2400: 0.65 mS/cm and 63%), resulting from interconnected pores and the polar chemical composition in the composite membranes. In terms of battery performance, the composite membrane showed highly stable electrochemical and heat-resistant properties, including superior discharge capacity when compared to Celgard 2400, indicating that the PAN/ADEP composite membrane has the potential to be used as a heat-resistant and flame-retardant separator for safe and high-power LIBs.

Forecasting year-to-year variations in the yields of major crops globally is expected to have utility in strengthening the ability of societies to better respond to food production shocks and food price spikes triggered by climate extremes. However, substantial improvements to the methodology used in global crop forecasting are required to realize a reliable operational service. Here, we assess the reliability of global within-season and pre-season predictions of yield variability obtained by applying statistical yield models to seasonal temperature and precipitation hindcast data derived from a multi-model ensemble (MME). This analysis is performed for five individual atmosphere-ocean coupled general circulation models (GCMs) and the two MME datasets generated using the average method and the mosaic method. Four major crops, maize, rice, wheat and soybean are studied. The mosaic method reliably predicts the yield variability over a large portion (25–38%) of the global harvested area three months before harvesting. The areas where the mosaic method displays good prediction skill are two to three times larger than those achieved using the average method (9–15%). Using the mosaic method, reliable within-season predictions of national yield variability can be produced in 36%, 24%, 25% and 30% of the maize-, soybean, rice- and wheat-producing countries, respectively. The pre-season predictions are found to be reliable in 23–32% of the crop-producing countries. As yield variability at the national level is of interest to commodity and food security specialists, the mosaic method provides a basis for developing an operational global yield forecasting service. Sodium ion batteries (SIBs) have drawn interest as a lithium ion battery (LIB) alternative owing to their low price and low deposits. To commercialize SIBs similar to how LIBs already have been, it is necessary to develop improved anode materials that have high stability and capacity to operate over many and long cycles. This paper reports the development of homogeneous Sb2S3 nanorods (Sb2S3 NRs) on reduced graphene oxide (Sb2S3 NRs @rGO) as anode materials for SIBs. Based on this work, Sb2S3 NRs show a discharge capacity of 564.42 mAh/g at 100 mA/g current density after 100 cycles. In developing a composite with reduced graphene oxide, Sb2S3 NRs@rGO present better cycling performance with a discharge capacity of 769.05 mAh/g at the same condition. This achievement justifies the importance of developing Sb2S3 NRs and Sb2S3 NRs@rGO for SIBs.

Abstract Zinc oxynitride has good electrical characteristics applicable for thin‐film transistors in display devices. Since nitrogen has lower reactivity compared to oxygen, tiny amount of background oxygen can prohibit nitrogen incorporation into the films. In order to minimise the effects of oxygen, hydrogen gas was introduced during sputtering growth. The main hypothesis was that the hydrogen gas would react with oxygen to lower the oxygen density in the vacuum chamber. The films were grown by rf sputtering using zinc metal target and nitrogen gas. Energy dispersive spectroscopy results showed that nitrogen incorporation in the grown films was increased by the additional hydrogen. It was also shown that nitrogen pulsing was an effective method to maintain a reliable target condition.

Abstract Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second‐leading cause of cancer‐related mortality worldwide, which may be effectively reduced by early screening. Colon cancer secreted protein‐2 (CCSP‐2) is a promising blood marker for CRC. An electric‐field effect colorectal sensor (E‐FECS), an ion‐sensitive field‐effect transistor under dual gate operation with nanostructure is developed, to quantify CCSP‐2 directly from patient blood samples. The sensing performance of the E‐FECS is verified in 7 controls and 7 CRC samples, and it is clinically validated on 30 controls, 30 advanced adenomas, and 81 CRC cases. The concentration of CCSP‐2 is significantly higher in plasma samples from CRC and advanced adenoma compared with controls (both P < 0.001). Sensitivity and specificity for CRC versus controls are 44.4% and 86.7%, respectively (AUC of 0.67), and 43.3% and 86.7%, respectively, for advanced adenomas (AUC of 0.67). CCSP‐2 detects a greater number of CRC cases than carcinoembryonic antigen does (45.6% vs 24.1%), and the combination of the two markers detects an even greater number of cases (53.2%). The E‐FECS system successfully detects CCSP‐2 in a wide range of samples including early stage cancers and advanced adenoma. CCSP‐2 has potential for use as a blood‐based biomarker for CRC.

As the aerospace industry grows, images obtained from Earth observation satellites have been successfully used in various fields. Specifically, the demand for a high-resolution (HR) optical images is gradually increasing, and hence the generation of a high-quality mosaic image is being magnified as an interesting issue. In this paper, we have proposed an efficient mosaic algorithm for HR optical images that are significantly different due to seasonal change. The algorithm includes main steps such as: (1) seamline extraction from gradient magnitude and seam images; (2) histogram matching; and (3) image feathering. Eleven Kompsat-2 images characterized by seasonal variations are used for the performance validation of the proposed method. The results of the performance test show that the proposed method effectively mosaics Kompsat-2 adjacent images including severe seasonal changes. Moreover, the results reveal that the proposed method is applicable to HR optic images such as GeoEye, IKONOS, QuickBird, RapidEye, SPOT, WorldView, etc.

Nanoporous carbon, including redox-active functional groups, can be a promising active electrode material (AEM) as a positive electrode for lithium-ion batteries owing to its high electrochemical performance originating from the host-free surface-driven charge storage process. This study examined the effects of the nanopore size on the pseudocapacitance of the nanoporous carbon materials using nanopore-engineered carbon-based AEMs (NE-C-AEMs). The pseudocapacitance of NE-C-AEMs was intensified, when the pore diameter was ≥2 nm in a voltage range of 1.0~4.8 V vs Li+/Li under the conventional carbonate-based electrolyte system, showing a high specific capacity of ~485 mA·h·g−1. In addition, the NE-C-AEMs exhibited high rate capabilities at current ranges from 0.2 to 4.0 A·g−1 as well as stable cycling behavior for more than 300 cycles. The high electrochemical performance of NE-C-AEMs was demonstrated by full-cell tests with a graphite nanosheet anode, where a high specific energy and power of ~345 Wh·kg−1 and ~6100 W·Kg−1, respectively, were achieved.

Web and mobile platforms have provided an environment of technical cooperation through technical development and the diffusion of related devices. Large-scale data sets have been available to analyze web interaction and data analysis. Particularly, large-scale data make us learn new patterns and insight into several research fields. For healthcare field, most chronic diseases are caused by environmental and genetic factors (Van der Laan et al., 2003). The relationship between environmental exposure and gene factors is crucial regarding disease etiology (Swift et al., 2004). For example, Tobacco is considered one of the biggest environmental factors responsible for many diseases each year. Schwartz and Collins (2007) discussed the importance of gene and environment factor correlation in human diseases. Thomas (2010) published a review of different approaches on gene-environment association studies attempting to explain some of the most complex diseases. Although previous studies have studied chronicle diseases with their causes one by one, those studies do not show integrated relationships between various diseases and their related human genes. Therefore, this study investigates the gene-disease relationships which are affected by tobacco and is able to find new association links with social network analysis and other mining techniques.

We propose a network quality aware routing (NQAR) mechanism to provide an enabling method of the delay-sensitive data delivery over error-prone wireless sensor networks. Unlike the existing routing methods that select routes with the shortest arrival latency or the minimum hop count, the proposed scheme adaptively selects the route based on the network qualities including link errors and collisions with minimum additional complexity. It is designed to avoid the paths with potential noise and collision that may cause many non-deterministic backoffs and retransmissions. We propose a generic framework to select a minimum cost route that takes the packet loss rate and collision history into account. NQAR uses a data centric approach to estimate a single-hop delay based on processing time, propagation delay, packet loss rate, number of backoffs, and the retransmission timeout between two neighboring nodes. This enables a source node to choose the shortest expected end-to-end delay path to send a delay-sensitive data. The experiment results show that NQAR reduces the end-to-end transfer delay up to approximately 50% in comparison with the latency-based directed diffusion and the hop count-based directed diffusion under the error-prone network environments. Moreover, NQAR shows better performance than those routing methods in terms of jitter, reachability, and network lifetime.
