Changes in agricultural practices enabled the circulation of N-containing species, making converting nitrate into ammonia (fertilizer) highly desirable. Herein, we propose a photosystem composed of NiO/Au plasmon/TiO2 that selectively produces ammonia from nitrates at neutral pH and room temperature with visible light via a combination of electrochemical and plasmon hot electrons (i.e., it is a photoelectrochemical process). The system effectively suppresses the undesirable hydrogen evolution reaction and converts the superfluous hot holes into atmospheric oxygen. The role of the hot electrons is to boost catalytic performance, enabling higher reaction rates at lower potentials. The process paves the way for agricultural practices that recycle nutrients, improving process circularity and reducing fertilizer costs.

Lead bromide perovskites have a larger band gap and are significantly more stable than their iodine counterparts, offering the perspective for higher voltage, tandem photovoltaics exceeding the Shockley-Queisser limit, and shorter time to deployment of photovoltaics. However, their efficiencies still need to be rivaling the iodine ones. Herein, the photophysics of FAPbBr(3) and the ones behind electron transfer from FAPbBr(3) to SnO2, one of the most effective electron transporting materials (ETMs), are reported. Time- and energy-resolved photoluminescence studies revealed the existence of two emitting states in the perovskite, which were assigned to bounded excitons and free carriers. SnO2 extracted electrons from excitons and free carriers, with a selectivity related to the SnO2 surface treatment. This new insight helps explain SnO2's unique qualities as an ETM to produce photovoltaics with reduced voltage losses. Furthermore, this study illustrates the importance of performing time- and energy-resolved photoluminescence to capture the intricacies of the photophysical process.

There is an urgent need for efficient solutionprocessable p-type semiconductors. Copper(I) iodide (CuI) has attracted attention as a potential candidate due to its good electrical properties and ease of preparation. However, its carrier dynamics still need to be better understood. Carrier dynamics after bandgap excitation yielded a convoluted signal of free carriers (positive signal) and a negative feature, which was also present when the material was excited with sub-bandgap excitation energies. This previously unseen feature was found to be dependent on measurement temperature and attributed to negative photoconductivity. The unexpected signal relates to the formation of polarons or strongly bound excitons. The possibility of coupling CuI to plasmonic sensitizers is also tested, yielding positive results. The outcomes mentioned above could have profound implications regarding the applicability of CuI in photocatalytic and photovoltaic systems and could also open a whole new range of possible applications.

Resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) has developed in the past decade as a powerful tool to probe the chemical state of a metal center and in situ study chemical reactions. We have used it to monitor spectral changes associated with the reduction of osmium(VI) nitrido complexes to the osmium(III) ammine state by the biologically relevant reducing agent, glutathione. Plasmonic materials have optical cross sections that exceed by 10-fold their geometric sizes, making them uniquely suitable to convert light into electrical charges. Harvesting plasmon-generated hot carriers is of interest for the broad fields of photovoltaics and photocatalysis; however, their direct utilization is limited by their ultrafast thermalization in metals. To prolong the lifetime of hot carriers, one can place acceptor materials, such as semiconductors, in direct contact with the plasmonic system. Herein, we report the effect of operating temperature on hot electron generation and transfer to a suitable semiconductor. We found that an increase in the operation temperature improves hot electron harvesting in a plasmonic semiconductor hybrid system, contrasting what is observed on photodriven processes in nonplasmonic systems. The effect appears to be related to an enhancement in hot carrier generation due to phonon coupling. This discovery provides a new strategy for optimization of photodriven energy production and chemical synthesis.

This work demonstrates how the combination of resonant and non-resonant X-ray emission spectroscopies supplemented with theoretical modelling allows for quantitative analysis of electronic states around Fermi, band gap energies and strength of crystal field splitting in 5d transition metal and metal-oxide materials., The composition of occupied and unoccupied electronic states in the vicinity of Fermi energies is vital for all materials and relates to their physical, chemical and mechanical properties. This work demonstrates how the combination of resonant and non-resonant X-ray emission spectroscopies supplemented with theoretical modelling allows for quantitative analysis of electronic states in 5d transition metal and metal-oxide materials. Application of X-rays provides element selectivity that, in combination with the penetrating properties of hard X-rays, allows determination of the composition of electronic states under working conditions, i.e. non-vacuum environment. Tungsten metal and tungsten oxide are evaluated to show the capability to simultaneously assess composition of around-band-gap electronic states as well as the character and magnitude of the crystal field splitting.

Metal nanoparticles have been widely exploited in catalysis, but their full impact on the environment and human health is still under debate. Here we describe the one-step fabrication of recoverable and reusable polymer microbead-supported metal and metal oxide nanocatalysts for application in batch reactions and flow systems. Au, Ag, and Fe3O4 nanoparticles were prepared directly at the surface of commercial benzylamine-coated spherical polymer beads in water by using low-energy microwave radiation for 5 min. The functionalization of microbead surface with betalamic acid, an antioxidant from plant origin, before irradiation changes the morphology and catalytic properties of the grafted nanoparticles. No leaching of the active phase was observed during the application of these effective and ready-to-use nanocatalysts on the reduction of 4-nitrophenol and oxidation of dihydrorhodamine 123. The supported nanocatalysts were recovered by filtration and/or magnetic separation and reused up to three times without significant drop in catalytic performance. These results can stimulate the controlled and facile synthesis of recoverable microbead-supported magnetic and nonmagnetic nanocatalysts that can be applied under myriad reaction conditions and reused multiple times.

Herein, it has been demonstrated how resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy can be employed to study the charge transfer dynamics in real-time during the temperature-induced oxidation of metallic tungsten. Application of high energy resolution schemes allowed distinguishing charge transfer to separate orbitals resulting from crystal field splitting. Based on the time-resolved studies, it was possible to determine the corresponding charge transfer rates. From the experimental data, we determined that the electron transfer during the thermal oxidation of the metal dominates in the temperature range of 470-570 °C, reaching a maximum of 0.036 electrons per °C.

More sustainable solutions are needed to produce chemicals and fuels, mainly to face rising demands and mitigate climate change. Light, as a reagent, has emerged as a route to activate small molecules, e.g., H2O, CO2, N2, and make complex chemicals in a process called photocatalysis. Several photosystems have been proposed, with plasmonic technology emerging as one the most promising technologies due to its high optical absorption and hot-carrier formation. However, the lifetime of hot carriers is unsuitable for direct use; therefore, they are normally coupled with suitable charge-accepting materials, such as semiconductors. Herein, a system is reported consisting of Au supported in p-Cu2O. The combination of p-Cu2O intrinsic photoactivity with the plasmonic properties of Au extended the system’s optical absorption range, increasing photocatalytic efficiency. More importantly, the system enabled us to study the underlying processes responsible for hot-hole transfer to p-Cu2O. Based on photocatalytic studies, it was concluded that most of the holes involved in aniline photo-oxidation come from hot-carrier injections, not from the PIRET process.

TiO2 catalysts, modified with acidic or alkaline solutions and then platinized, were used for the partial photocatalytic oxidation of 3-pyridinemethanol to 3-pyridinemethanal and vitamin B-3 under environmentally friendly conditions. The reaction took place in water under UVA light and air oxygen. Catalysts were characterized by TEM, photoluminescence, DRIFT-IR, Raman, DRS, XPS, and photocurrent measurements. The photocatalytic activity results show that Pt loading of untreated samples leads to a significant activity improvement (hence product yield) as much as acid and alkaline treatments do. Moreover, the alkaline treated TiO2 samples exhibit a further increase in activity after loading with Pt. Pt acts as an electron scavenger promoting electron transfer from the TiO2 conduction band, consequently boosting the photogenerated pair numbers available for the reactive process. Photocurrent measurements show that the TiO2 photocatalysts' active sites increase significantly after platinization and alkaline/acid treatment. The treated and/or Pt loaded catalysts showed good thermal stability (at least up to 400 degrees C).

X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) provide a unique opportunity to probe both the highest occupied and the lowest unoccupied states in matter with bulk sensitivity. In this work, a combination of valence-to-core XES and pre-edge XAS techniques are used to determine changes induced in the electronic structure of titanium dioxide doped with nitrogen atoms. Based on the experimental data it is shown that N-doping leads to incorporation of the p-states on the occupied electronic site. For the conduction band, a decrease in population of the lowest unoccupied d-localized orbitals with respect to the d-delocalized orbitals is observed. As confirmed by theoretical calculations, the N p-states in TiO2 structure are characterized by higher binding energy than the O p-states which gives a smaller value of the band-gap energy for the doped material.

Herein, it is presented a catalytic system for gas-phase hydrodechlorination of tetrachloromethane at low temperature and atmospheric pressure, using iridium supported on silica as parent catalyst. Iridium electronic configuration is suitable to catalyse the hydrodechlorination reactions, however, it has been rarely used in this reaction to date. The catalytic abilities were significantly improved when a second transition metal was added. Catalysts' stability and selectivity to the desired products (i.e. C1-C4 hydrocarbons) improved compared to conventional activation in hydrogen when catalysts were activated shortly with microwave irradiation. Microwave irradiation of catalysts favourably influences the homogeneity of the metallic active phase, both in terms of the size of metal crystals and the homogeneity of bimetallic systems. Addition of platinum to the 'parent' iridium catalyst improved its catalytic properties and decreased deactivation. Fresh and spent catalysts were comprehensively characterized using several techniques (BET, CO-chemisorption, XRD, XPS, electron microscopy and mass spectrometry) to determine structure-activity relationships and potential causes for catalyst deactivation. No significant changes in crystalline size or bimetallic phase composition were observed for spent catalysts (with the exception of Ir-Pd catalysts which underwent bulk carbide during the reaction).

Nitrones derived from natural antioxidants are emerging as highly specific therapeutics against various human diseases, including stroke, neurodegenerative pathologies, and cancer. However, the development of useful pseudo-natural nitrones requires the judicious choice of a secondary metabolite as the precursor. Betalains are nitrogen-containing natural pigments that exhibit marked antioxidant capacity and pharmacological properties and, hence, are ideal candidates for designing multifunctional nitrones. In this work, we describe the semisynthesis and properties of a biocompatible and antioxidant betalain-nitrone called OxiBeet. This bio-based compound is a better radical scavenger than ascorbic acid, gallic acid, and most non-phenolic antioxidants and undergoes concerted proton-coupled electron transfer. The autoxidation of OxiBeet produces a persistent nitroxide radical, which, herein, is studied via electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. In addition, femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy reveals that excited state formation is not required for the oxidation of OxiBeet. The results are compared with those obtained using betanin, a natural betalain, and pBeet, the imine analog of OxiBeet. The findings of this study will enable the development of antioxidant and spin-trap nitrones based on the novel N-oxide 1,7-diazaheptamethinium scaffold and betalain dyes with enhanced hydrolytic stability in aqueous alkaline media.

This roadmap on Nanotechnology for Catalysis and Solar Energy Conversion focuses on the application of nanotechnology in addressing the current challenges of energy conversion: ‘high efficiency, stability, safety, and the potential for low-cost/scalable manufacturing’ to quote from the contributed article by Nathan Lewis. This roadmap focuses on solar-to-fuel conversion, solar water splitting, solar photovoltaics and bio-catalysis. It includes dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), perovskite solar cells, and organic photovoltaics. Smart engineering of colloidal quantum materials and nanostructured electrodes will improve solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency, as described in the articles by Waiskopf and Banin and Meyer. Semiconductor nanoparticles will also improve solar energy conversion efficiency, as discussed by Boschloo et al in their article on DSSCs. Perovskite solar cells have advanced rapidly in recent years, including new ideas on 2D and 3D hybrid halide perovskites, as described by Spanopoulos et al ‘Next generation’ solar cells using multiple exciton generation (MEG) from hot carriers, described in the article by Nozik and Beard, could lead to remarkable improvement in photovoltaic efficiency by using quantization effects in semiconductor nanostructures (quantum dots, wires or wells). These challenges will not be met without simultaneous improvement in nanoscale characterization methods. Terahertz spectroscopy, discussed in the article by Milot et al is one example of a method that is overcoming the difficulties associated with nanoscale materials characterization by avoiding electrical contacts to nanoparticles, allowing characterization during device operation, and enabling characterization of a single nanoparticle. Besides experimental advances, computational science is also meeting the challenges of nanomaterials synthesis. The article by Kohlstedt and Schatz discusses the computational frameworks being used to predict structure–property relationships in materials and devices, including machine learning methods, with an emphasis on organic photovoltaics. The contribution by Megarity and Armstrong presents the ‘electrochemical leaf’ for improvements in electrochemistry and beyond. In addition, biohybrid approaches can take advantage of efficient and specific enzyme catalysts. These articles present the nanoscience and technology at the forefront of renewable energy development that will have significant benefits to society.

The recent discovery that metal nanoparticles can generate hot carriers upon light excitation is seen as a breakthrough in the fields of plasmonics and photonics. However, the high expectations for a plasmonic revolution in applications have been dampened by the ultrafast energy dissipation of surface plasmon polariton modes. While research aimed at suppressing loss mechanisms is still pursued, another research direction has emerged where charges are harnessed before they relax. Despite the effort, efficiencies of devices based on hot carriers harnessed from plasmonics are typically very low (a few percent), which is somehow paradoxical since efficiencies for electron injection efficiency have been reported to be in the range from 25% to 40% and hole injection up to 85%. This indicates that the low device performance relates to the undesirable charge back-transfer process, which happens in the picosecond time scale. In this context, we performed a comparative ultrafast spectroscopy investigation with gold nanoparticles in direct contact with different metal oxides, namely, TiO2, ZnO, SnO2, and Al:ZnO. Electron dynamics revealed the decisive role of metal/semiconductor interfaces and semiconductor electronic structure in electron injection efficiency and recombination, with significant implications to the fields of photocatalysis and photovoltaics.

The red pigments of beets are used to produce BeetBlue, a biocompatible blue dye., Blue natural pigments are rare, especially among plants. However, flowering species that evolved to attract Hymenoptera pollinators are colored by blue anthocyanin-metal complexes. Plants lacking anthocyanins are pigmented by betalains but are unable to produce blue hues. By extending the π-system of betalains, we designed a photostable and metal-free blue dye named BeetBlue that did not show toxicity to human hepatic and retinal pigment epithelial cells and does not affect zebrafish embryonal development. This chiral dye can be conveniently synthesized from betalamic acid obtained from hydrolyzed red beetroot juice or by enzymatic oxidation of l-dopa. BeetBlue is blue in the solid form and in solution of acidified polar molecular solvents, including water. Its capacity to dye natural matrices makes BeetBlue the prototype of a new class of low-cost bioinspired chromophores suitable for a myriad of applications requiring a blue hue.

Plasmon hot carriers are interesting for photoredox chemical synthesis but their direct utilization is limited by their ultrafast thermalization. Therefore, they are often transferred to suitable accepting materials that expedite their lifetime. Solid-state photocatalysts are technologically more suitable than their molecular counterparts, but their photophysical processes are harder to follow due to the absence of clear optical fingerprints. Herein, the journey of hot electrons in a solid-state multimetallic photocatalyst is revealed by a combination of ultrafast visible and infrared spectroscopy. Dynamics showed that electrons formed upon silver plasmonic excitation reach the gold catalytic site within 700 fs and the electron flow could also be reversed. Gold is the preferred site until saturation of its 5d band occurs. Silver-plasmon hot electrons increased the rate of nitrophenol reduction 16-fold, confirming the preponderant role of hot electrons in the overall catalytic activity and the importance to follow hot carriers' journeys in solid-state photosystems.

Plasmonics nanoparticles gained prominence in the last decade in fields of photonics, solar energy conversion and catalysis. It has been shown that anchoring the plasmonics nanoparticles on semiconductors via a molecular linker reduces band bending and increases hot carriers&rsquo, lifetime, which is essential for the development of efficient photovoltaic devices and photocatalytic systems. Aminobenzoic acid is a commonly used linker to connect the plasmonic metal to an oxide-based semiconductor. The coordination to the oxide was established to occur via the carboxylic functional group, however, it remains unclear what type of coordination that is established with the metal site. Herein, it is demonstrated that metal is covalently bonded to the linker via the amino group, as supported by Surface-Enhanced Resonant Raman and infrared spectroscopies. The covalent linkage increases significantly the amount of silver grafted, resulting in an improvement of the system catalytic proficiency in the 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) photoreduction.

Herein we report on the hydrolysis mechanism of [Pt{N(p-HC 6 F 4 )CH 2 } 2 (NC 5 H 5 ) 2 (OH) 2 ], a platinum(IV) complex that exhibits anti-cancer properties. Atomic telemetry, an in situ technique based on electron structure sensitive X-ray spectroscopy, revealed that hydrolysis preceded any reduction of the metal center. The obtained results are complemented with 19 F NMR measurements and theoretical calculations and support the observation that this Pt IV complex does not reduce spontaneously to Pt II in HEPES buffer solution at pH 7.4 and after 24 h incubation. These results are of importance for the design of novel Pt-based coordination complexes as well as understanding their behavior under physiological conditions.

Direct proton photo-reduction to molecular hydrogen with a lead-halide perovskite photosystem is presented. The concept uses CsPbBr3 nanocrystals and Ru@TiO2 nanoparticles as light harvesters and catalyst, respectively. The photo-system attains charge transfer from donor to acceptor via collision events, established via static and ultrafast spectroscopy. The photo-system exhibits a photon-to-hydrogen efficiency of ca. 0.4%, a respectable efficiency for a system relying on effective collisions for the transference of electrons.

Chemoselective flow hydrogenation of 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one was performed over nano-nickel catalysts. The parent catalyst composed solely of nickel nanoparticles grafted on the polymeric resin exhibited high activity and selectivity towards C C bond saturation but its modification with small quantities of tin significantly increased its ability to perform C O bond hydrogenation. The post-synthetic modification of the parent catalyst was achieved by surface organometallic chemistry approach and performed in the same flow micro-reactor, which was used for the catalytic studies, providing a methodology for online modification of parent catalysts.

Herein, we report a systematic study on the electronic structure of surface and bulk TiO2 doped with C, N or S. The results were attained with a semi-empirical method consisting of a combination between resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) measurements and localized density of states (LDOS) simulations. Experimental TiO2 RXES data was used to fit FEFF code empirical parameters, and subsequently frozen for the theoretical analysis of LDOS of TiO2 doped materials. The results show significant electronic structure differences between bulk and surface doping, as well as in the nearest Ti atom electronic structure if it is located at the surface or sub-surface, with potential consequences to the photo-catalytic process. The methodology can be adapted to study other dopants, morphologies, structures and surface terminations and as well as other inorganic semiconductors.

This work investigates the influence of activation by microwave irradiation on the catalytic properties of Pd-Au/C-Sibunit catalysts in the hydrodechlorination of CCl4. Pd and Pd-Au samples were thoroughly characterized by CO chemisorption, X-ray diffraction, TPHD and STEM, and used in gas phase hydrodechlorination of tetrachloromethane. The studies showed that homogenous Pd-Au alloys are formed more efficiently if short-time microwave activation is applied instead of conventional activation by H-2 reduction at 380 A degrees C. These catalysts show higher activity, stability and higher selectivity towards the desired products (C1-C5 hydrocarbons) than the catalysts activated by conventional reduction in 10%H-2/Ar flow.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is one of the most versatile semiconductor materials with multifarious potential applications. Easily accessible alkylzinc alkoxides have been widely exploited as single-source precursors of ZnO-based nanomaterials but their multi-step decomposition pathways have not been understood in detail. Herein, the formation mechanism of ZnO nanocrystals via solid-state thermal decomposition of a model pre-organised alkylzinc alkoxide precursor, i.e. [tBuZn(μ3-OtBu)]4, is elucidated using in situ valence-to-core X-ray emission (v2c-XES) and high energy resolution off-resonant spectroscopy (HEROS) in conjunction with theoretical calculations. Combination of in situ spectroscopic measurements and theoretical simulations indicates that the precursor structural evolution is initiated by the homolytic cleavage of the R–Zn bond, which leads to the formation of a transient radical ([˙Zn(μ3-OR)][RZn(μ3-OR)]3) species, which is responsible for the initial decomposition process. The ensuing multistep transformations involve the formation of intermediate radical zinc oxo-alkoxide clusters with gapless electronic states. Hitherto, the formation of clusters of this type has not been considered either as intermediate structures en route to a semiconductor ZnO phase or as potential species accounting for various defect states of ZnO NCs, particularly the singly charged oxygen vacancy, Vo+.

In the present work high energy resolution off-resonant X-ray spectroscopy (HEROS) was employed at a synchrotron to study a silica supported Ta(V) bisalkyl catalyst activated in hydrogen. The Ta L α 1 HEROS spectra were measured during oxidation of the starting complex and the relative species’ concentration was successfully retrieved as a function of time using the fingerprint HEROS spectra measured for the unoxidized and the oxidized catalyst. Based on the experimental data and theory-based calculations, it was shown that oxidation of the active Ta catalyst leads to the formation of mono- and di-meric species on the SiO2 surface. The obtained results were compared to those of the previously reported time-resolved HEROS study on an inactive silica supported Ta(V) bisalkyl catalyst’s concentration evolution during its oxidation Blachucki et al. (2015). The study allowed observation of an immediate transition of the active Ta catalyst from its unoxidized form to the oxidized one. This finding is dissimilar to the result of the study on the inactive Ta catalyst, where the oxidation led through an intermediate step.

Featured Application In the present work, RXES planes are reconstructed with high energy resolution from the experimental spectra of the X-ray radiation emitted from a sample and of incident X-ray pulses delivered by an XFEL operated in the raw SASE mode. The dependence of the reconstructed RXES planes' quality on the number of recorded XFEL shots is studied. Aqueous iron (III) oxide nanoparticles were irradiated with pure self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) pulses tuned to the energy around the Fe K-edge ionization threshold. For each XFEL shot, the incident X-ray pulse spectrum and Fe K beta emission spectrum were measured synchronously with dedicated spectrometers and processed through a reconstruction algorithm allowing for the determination of Fe K beta resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) plane with high energy resolution. The influence of the number of X-ray shots employed in the experiment on the reconstructed data quality was evaluated, enabling the determination of thresholds for good data acquisition and experimental times essential for practical usage of scarce XFEL beam times.
