We document the implications of the 2014 revisions to the Turkish Household Labor Force Survey and offer guidance on how to handle the irregularities in population and unemployment statistics that resulted from two particular revisions. First, new population projections were adopted to assign survey weights. Second, a narrower definition of unemployment was adopted. We propose methods to adjust the survey weights for the pre-2014 period in order to discern changes in population statistics by age groups and regions without interruption over time and to calculate the unemployment rates according to both broader and narrower definitions since 2004. / Bu çalışmada TÜİK Hanehalkı İşgücü Anketi’ninde 2014 yılında yapılan düzenlemelerden kaynaklanan bazı sonuçları bulguluyor, nüfus ve işsizlik istatistiklerinde yapılan revizyonların özellikle ikisinden kaynaklanan sorunların nasıl ele alınması gerektiği hakkında yol gösteriyoruz. This paper provides an empirical analysis of firms’ delegation decisions by using a matched employer-employee dataset from Britain. In our analysis, we first investigate if firm-provided training is positively related to delegating authority, as predicted by the existing theories. We then consider variables that can potentially increase the value of delegation. In particular, we conjecture that firms become more likely to delegate authority as they face higher uncertainty or as the employees acquire more precise information. To test these hypotheses, we use market conditions to measure uncertainty and correlates of worker productivity to measure the precision of the employee’s information. / Bu çalışma, Britanya’da oluşturulan eşlenmiş işveren-çalışan veri setini kullanarak, firmaların yetkilendirme (delegasyon) kararlarının ampirik bir analizini sunmaktadır. The value of information regarding risk class for a monopoly insurer and its customers is examined in both symmetric and asymmetric information environments. A monopolist always prefers contracting with uninformed customers as this maximizes the rent extracted under symmetric information while also avoiding the cost of adverse selection when information is held asymmetrically. Although customers are indifferent to symmetric information when they are initially uninformed, they prefer contracting with hidden knowledge rather than symmetric information since the monopoly responds to adverse selection by sharing gains from trade with high-risk customers when low risks are predominant in the insurance pool. However, utilitarian social welfare is highest when customers are uninformed, and is higher when information is symmetric rather than asymmetric.

В даній статті розглядається вплив сільського господарства на розвиток економіки України і аналіз сільського господарства як одного з найважливіших секторів національної економіки, Проаналізовано основні причини, що сповільнюють розвиток сільського господарства. Досліджено, як фінансово підтримує держава даний сектор. Адже, сільське господарство як частина економіки не тільки займає велику долю у ВВП, зовнішніх ринкових відносинах і на ринку праці, але й є важливим споживачем товарів та послуг інших сфер, створює в них робочі місця. Тому воно може мати сильний вплив на розвиток галузей виробництва та економічну стабільність держави. In this article the impact of agriculture on the economy of Ukraine and analysis of agriculture as one of the most important sectors of the national economy, analyzed the main reasons that slow down the development of agriculture. Investigated how the government financially supports the sector. After all, agriculture as part of the economy not only occupies a large share of GDP, external market relations and the labor market, but also an important consumer of goods and services other fields, they create jobs. Therefore, it can have a strong influence on the development of industries and economic stability of the state. In the article the problem of reform, development and efficient operation of agriculture, which in modern terms is of great importance. Today, Ukraine's economy is undergoing structural changes, so in order to choose the direction of movement in the future an evaluation of relationships of agriculture and the national economy. В данной статье рассматривается влияние сельского хозяйства на развитие экономики Украины и анализ сельского хозяйства как одного из важнейших секторов национальной экономики, Проанализированы основные причины, замедляющие развитие сельского хозяйства. Исследовано, как финансово поддерживает государство данный сектор. Ведь сельское хозяйство как часть экономики не только занимает большую долю в ВВП, внешних рыночных отношениях и на рынке труда, но и является важным потребителем товаров и услуг других сфер, создает в них рабочие места. Поэтому оно может иметь сильное влияние на развитие отраслей производства и экономическую стабильность государства. У даній статті розглянуті методи використання відходів винограду. Поблизу підприємств, які переробляють виноград, скупчується величезна кількість відходів, які можуть бути переробленні в нові цінні продукти. Метою роботи є визначення найбільш перспективних галузей для впровадження перероблених вторинних ресурсів виноробної промисловості, задля підвищення рівня економіки України, а також покращення екологічного стану, викликаного тонами відходів багатьох виробництв. Дане дослідження є одним з напрямків особливої моделі економіки – «Зеленої економіки», яка отримує все більший суспільний резонанс в світі. Проаналізовано доцільність імпорту перероблених виробів. Особливої популярності набуває використання вторинних ресурсів винограду у косметичній промисловості з метою надання антиоксидантних, протизапальних, консервуючих і інших властивостей. Розглянуто ефективність безвідходної технології переробки винограду, яка дозволить вітчизняним виноробним підприємствам стати більш конкурентоспроможними і поліпшити показники діяльності, наблизивши їх до світових. In this article considered the methods of using grape waste. Near the factories that process grapes, a huge amount of waste accumulates, which can be recycled into new valuable products.The purpose of this work is to determing the most promising sectors for the implementation of recycled resources of the wine industry, in order to increase the level of the Ukrainian economy, as well as to improve the ecological condition caused by tones of waste from many industries. Also, this study is one of the directions of a special model of the economy – the «Green Economy», which receives an increasing public resonance in the world. The expediency of imported processed products has been analyzed. Especially popular is the use of secondary grape resources in the cosmetic industry in order to provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, preservative and other properties.The efficiency of non-waste processing technology of grapes is considered, which will allow domestic winemaking enterprises to become more competitive and improve performance indicators, bringing them closer to the world. В данной статье рассмотрены методы использования отходов винограда. Вблизи предприятий, перерабатывающих виноград скапливается огромное количество отходов, которые могут быть перерабатоны в новые ценные продукты. Целью работы является определение наиболее перспективных отраслей для внедрения переработанных вторичных ресурсов винодельческой промышленности, для повышения уровня экономики Украины, а также улучшение экологического состояния, вызванного тонами отходов многих производств. Также данное исследование является одним из направлений особой модели экономики – «Зеленой экономики», которая получает все больше общественный резонанс в мире. Проанализирована целесообразность импорта переработанных изделий. Особую популярность приобретает использование вторичных ресурсов винограда в косметической промышленности с целью предоставления антиоксидантных, противовоспалительных, консервирующих и других свойств. Рассмотрена эффективность безотходной технологии переработки винограда, которая позволит отечественным винодельческим предприятиям стать более конкурентоспособными и улучшить показатели деятельности, приблизив их к мировым.

Проаналізовано тенденції міжнародної міграції серед країн G-20, країн Європейського Союзу та України. Встановлено, що лідерами міграційних процесів виступають найбільш розвинені в економічному відношенні країни: США, Канада, Австралія, Німеччина і значна частина західноєвропейських країн. Визначено основні причини міжнародної міграції: високий ступінь безробіття, умови та рівень оплати праці, якість життя, економічна та соціальна стабільність, навчання, туризм тощо. Встановлено, що міграційні процеси неоднозначно впливають на економіку країн, залежно від належності країни: приймаюча або країна-донор. Визначено основні інструменти регулювання міграційних процесів. Ідентифіковано проблеми, що пов’язані з неконтрольованим поширенням міграційних процесів в умовах глобалізації. Запропоновано низку напрямів щодо оптимізації процесу регулювання міжнародною міграцією на прикладі України, які залежно від масштабів поділено на міжнародні та національні інструменти. Використовуючи методи математичної статистики, здійснено прогноз міграційних процесів в Україні. За проведеними обчисленнями очікується зменшення обсягів міжнародної міграції українців до 2020 року. The trends of international migration among the G-20 countries, the countries of the European Union and Ukraine are analyzed. It was established that the leaders of the migration processes are the most economically developed countries: the USA, Canada, Australia, Germany and a significant part of the Western European countries. The main causes of international migration are identified: high unemployment, conditions and level of remuneration, quality of life, economic and social stability, education, tourism, etc. It has been established that migration processes have a mixed impact on the economies of countries, depending on the country's membership: host or donor country. The basic tools of regulation of migration processes are determined. Problems related to uncontrolled distribution of migration processes in the conditions of globalization have been identified. A number of directions are proposed for optimizing the process of regulation of international migration on the example of Ukraine, which, depending on the scale, are divided into international and national instruments. Using the methods of mathematical statistics, the forecast of migration processes in Ukraine is carried out. According to the calculations, the volume of international migration of Ukrainians by 2020 is expected to decrease. Установлено, что лидерами миграционных процессов выступают наиболее развитые в экономическом отношении страны: США, Канада, Австралия, Германия и значительная часть западноевропейских стран. Определены основные причины международной миграции: высокий уровень безработицы, условия и уровень оплаты труда, качество жизни, экономическая и социальная стабильность, обучение, туризм и тому подобное. Используя методы математической статистики, осуществлен прогноз миграционных процессов в Украине. Согласно проведенным вычислениям ожидается уменьшение объемов международной миграции украинский в до 2020 года.

У статті досліджено державну підтримку підприємств видавничополіграфічної галузі України, розглянуто діяльність Державного комітету телебачення і радіомовлення України, Інституту книги, податкове та митне законодавство, а також міські програми підтримки книговидання. Під час дослідження виявлено, що заходами, якими держава здійснює підтримку підприємств видавничо-поліграфічної галузі є митні та податкові пільги, державна та міські програми підтримки випуску соціально значимих видань. Проте, незважаючи на широкий спектр заходів на підтримку підприємств видавничо-поліграфічної галузі з боку держави, їхній вплив був лише частково успішним. Податкові пільги на імпорт обладнання та сировини не призвели до суттєвого оновлення основних виробничих засобів. Державні програми з підтримки книговидання мають невеликий обсяг й не мають значимого впливу на стан поліграфічних підприємств. The article investigates the state support of the enterprises of the publishing and printing industry of Ukraine, reviews the activities of the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine, the Book Institute, tax and customs legislation, as well as urban programs for the support of book publishing. During the research, it was discovered that the measures supported by the state of the enterprises of the publishing and printing industry are customs and tax privileges, state and municipal programs to support the production of socially significant editions. However, in spite of the wide range of activities supported by the state in the printing and publishing industry, their influence was only partially successful. Tax exemptions for the import of equipment and raw materials did not lead to a significant upgrade of the main production facilities. State programs for supporting book publishing have a small amount and do not have a significant impact on the state of printing companies. В статье исследована государственная поддержка предприятий издательско-полиграфической отрасли Украины, рассмотрена деятельность Государственного комитета телевидения и радиовещания Украины, Института книги, налоговое и таможенное законодательство, а также городские программы поддержки книгоиздания. В ходе исследования выявлено, что мероприятиями, которыми государство осуществляет поддержку предприятий издательско-полиграфической отрасли являются таможенные и налоговые льготы, государственные и городские программы поддержки выпуска социально значимых изданий. Однако, несмотря на широкий спектр мероприятий в поддержку предприятий издательско-полиграфической отрасли со стороны государства, их влияние было лишь частично успешным. Налоговые льготы на импорт оборудования и сырья не привели к существенному обновлению основных производственных средств. Государственные программы по поддержке книгоиздания имеют небольшой объем и не имеют значимого влияния на состояние полиграфических предприятий.

У статті охарактеризовано першопричини виникнення інфляції в історичному контексті. Визначено сутність інфляції та досліджено вплив макроекономічних процесів на інфляцію в країні. Відображено внутрішні (монополія виробництва, мілітаризація економіки, надлишковий випуск паперових грошей) і зовнішні (поглиблення міждержавних валютнокредитних відносин, посилення інтернаціоналізації господарських зв’язків між країнами, загострення суперництва на міжнародних ринках капіталів, товарів, послуг, робочої сили) причини інфляції з точки зору порушення економічної рівноваги. Проаналізовано тенденції інфляційних процесів в Україні впродовж останніх років та передумови їх виникнення. Охарактеризовано соціально-економічні наслідки для національного господарства та негативний вплив інфляції на матеріальне становище населення країни. Запропоновано заходи антиінфляційного регулювання й шляхи впливу на інфляційні процеси з метою їх зниження та запобігання. Окреслено перспективи подальших досліджень у напрямі аналізу інфляційних очікувань та вивчення специфіки впливу дефіцитного попиту на подорожчання товарів. The article describes the root causes of inflation in the historical context. The essence of inflation and the influence of macroeconomic processes on inflation in Ukraine. Displaying internal (production Monopoly, the militarization of the economy, excessive emissions of paper money, etc.) and external (worsening international monetary relations, increased internationalization of economic relations between countries, increased competition in global markets, capital, goods, services, labor, etc.) causes inflation in terms of the violation of economic equilibrium. The tendencies of inflation in Ukraine in recent years and the conditions of their occurrence. Characterized social and economic consequences for the national economy and the negative impact of inflation on the financial situation of the country. The measures of regulation and anti-inflationary effects on inflationary pressures for their reduction and prevention. Prospects for further research towards the analysis of inflation expectations and study the specific impact of pumping scarce rise in demand for goods. В статье охарактеризованы первопричины возникновения инфляции в историческом контексте. Установлена суть инфляции и исследовано влияние макроэкономических процессов на инфляционные процессы в Украине. Отображены внутренние (монополия производства, милитаризация экономики, чрезмерный выпуск бумажных денег) и внешние (усиление интернациональных валютно-кредитных связей, увеличение международных хозяйственных отношений между странами, усиление соперничества на мировых рынках капиталов, товаров, услуг, рабочей силы.) причины инфляции со стороны нарушения экономического равновесия. Проанализированы тенденции инфляционных процессов в Украине на протяжении последних лет и предпосылки их возникновения. Охарактеризованы социально-экономические следствия для национального хозяйства и отрицательное влияние инфляции на материальное положение населения государства. Предложены меры антиинфляционного регулирования и воздействия на инфляционные процессы с целью их понижения и предотвращения. Установлены перспективы последующих исследований в направлении анализа инфляционных ожиданий и изучение особенностей влияния увеличения дефицитного спроса на подорожание продуктов.

Енергетична галузь України перебуває в скрутному становищі. Критичність ситуації додає не тільки скорочення вугільного резерву за рахунок припинення поставки з окупованих територій, а й за рахунок загального зменшення видобутку кам'яного та бурого вугілля. У зв'язку зі складними відносинами з Російською Федерацією, а також з прагненням продемонструвати свою незалежність, Україна також прагне до скорочення споживання природного газу. Виникнувший замкнений цикл (скорочення використання газового ресурсу на користь вугільної енергетики з метою незалежності від інших країн і одночасне зменшення видобутку у вугільній сфері) – одна з причин дострокового поновлення Енергетичної стратегії України (Енергетична Стратегія України до 2035 року). В Енергетичній стратегії України на період до 2030 року в песимістичному прогнозі закладено щорічне зростання ВВП на 3,8% в 2010- 2030 рр. Невідповідність реального ВВП прогнозованому робить всі розрахунки некоректними і всю Енергетичну стратегію України до 2030 року неефективною і не відображає реальну ситуацію в галузі. The energy industry of Ukraine is in a difficult situation. Criticalness of the situation is given not only to the reduction of the coal reserve due to stop of supply from the occupied territories, but also due to a general decrease in the extraction of black and brown coal. In connection with the complex relations with the Russian Federation, as well as with the desire to demonstrate its independence, Ukraine also aims to reduce the consumption of natural gas. Occurred closed cycle (reduction of the use of gas resources in favor of coal power for the sake of independence from other countries and a simultaneous decrease in coal production) is one of the reasons for the premature renewal of the Energy Strategy of Ukraine (Energy Strategy of Ukraine until 2035). In the Energy Strategy of Ukraine for the period until 2030, pessimistic forecast was established annual GDP growth of 3.8% in 2010-2030. The discrepancy between real GDP and the forecasted makes all calculations incorrect and the entire Energy Strategy of Ukraine until 2030 ineffective and does not reflect the real situation in the industry. The article analyzes the situation in the energy sector of Ukraine, the problems that arose in it, incorrect input data into the Energy Strategy of Ukraine until 2030, the unreal goals in the Energy Strategy of Ukraine until 2035. Энергетическая отрасль Украины находится в тяжелом положении. Критичность ситуации придает не только сокращение угольного резерва за счет прекращений поставки с оккупированных территорий, но и за счет общего уменьшения добычи каменного и бурого угля. В связи со сложными отношениями с Российской Федерацией, а также со стремлением продемонстрировать свою независимость, Украина также стремится к сокращению потребления природного газа. Возникший замкнутый цикл (сокращение использование газового ресурса в пользу угольной энергетики с целью независимости от других стран и одновременное уменьшение добычи в угольной сфере) – одна из причин досрочного обновления Энергетической стратегии Украины (Энергетическая Стратегия Украины до 2035 года). В Энергетической стратегии Украины на период до 2030 года в пессимистическом прогнозе заложен ежегодный рост ВВП на 3,8% в 2010- 2030 гг. Несоответствие реального ВВП прогнозируемому делает все расчеты некорректными и всю Энергетическую стратегию Украины до 2030 года неэффективной и не отображающей реальную ситуацию в отрасли. В статье анализируется ситуация в энергетической отрасли Украины, возникшие в ней проблемы, некорректные входные данные в Энергетическую стратегию Украины до 2030 года, реальность показателей в Энергетической стратегии Украины до 2035 года.

This papers aims to identify and explain the differences in information and communications technologies (ICT) adoption for a sample of 142 developed and developing countries. In addition, we examine the relationships between specific combinations of technologies and the factors explaining them. Although income is a key factor for all country groups, its role is more significant for middle-digitalization countries. Using several multivariate techniques, we detect different patterns of digitalization. The patterns are explained to differing degrees by the type of country, by differences in economic development, and by socio-demographic and institutional variables. Factors such as quality of regulation and infrastructure explain ICT adoption in high-income countries. The ICT combination associated with specific income groups as well as the explanatory variables detected for each of them might be useful to implement the most appropriate policy actions to reduce the digital divide.

The increase in foreign direct investments raises concerns about labor market consequences in many countries. It is feared that multinational firms are inclined to shift jobs abroad and increase job volatility. We use firm-level data to examine if multinationality and foreign ownership affect the wage elasticity of labor demand. Unlike previous studies, we distinguish the effect on different skill groups of employees. We find no general difference in wage elasticity between foreign and domestic firms but the wage elasticity is higher in multinational firms than in national firms, in particular for medium-skilled workers.

This paper presents empirical evidence of the effect of FDI inflows on productivity convergence in central and eastern Europe, using industry-level data. Four conclusions stand out. First, there is a strong convergence effect in productivity, both at the country and at the industry level. Second, FDI inflow plays an important role in accounting for productivity growth. Third, the impact of FDI on productivity critically depends on the absorptive capacity of recipient countries and industries. Fourth, there is important heterogeneity across countries, industries and time with respect to some of the main findings. JEL Classification: C23, F21, O33

This paper proposes a new testing procedure for detecting error cross section dependence after estimating a linear dynamic panel data model with regressors using the generalised method of moments (GMM). The test is valid when the cross-sectional dimension of the panel is large relative to the time series dimension. Importantly, our approach allows one to examine whether any error cross section dependence remains after including time dummies (or after transforming the data in terms of deviations from time-specific averages), which will be the case under heterogeneous error cross section dependence. Finite sample simulation-based results suggest that our tests perform well, particularly the version based on the [Blundell, R., Bond, S., 1998. Initial conditions and moment restrictions in dynamic panel data models. Journal of Econometrics 87, 115–143] system GMM estimator. In addition, it is shown that the system GMM estimator, based only on partial instruments consisting of the regressors, can be a reliable alternative to the standard GMM estimators under heterogeneous error cross section dependence. The proposed tests are applied to employment equations using UK firm data and the results show little evidence of heterogeneous error cross section dependence.

For non-stationary vector autoregressive models (VAR hereafter, or VAR with moving average, VARMA hereafter), we show that the presence of common cyclical features or cointegration leads to a reduction of the order of the implied univariate autoregressive-integrated-moving average (ARIMA hereafter) models. This finding can explain why we identify parsimonious univariate ARIMA models in applied research although VAR models of typical order and dimension used in macroeconometrics imply non-parsimonious univariate ARIMA representations. Next, we develop a strategy for studying interactions between variables prior to possibly modelling them in a multivariate setting. Indeed, the similarity of the autoregressive roots will be informative about the presence of co-movements in a set of multiple time series. Our results justify both the use of a panel setup with homogeneous autoregression and heterogeneous cross-correlated vector moving average errors and a factor structure, and the use of cross-sectional aggregates of ARIMA series to estimate the homogeneous autoregression.

TI study a situation where two players disagree on the division of a good. In the first of two stages, the players can divide the good peacefully between them by signing a contract. If either or both players reject the contract, they must engage in a costly contest over the good. One of the players' valuation is assumed to be private information. The feasibility of a contract that divides the good between the players prior to the contest is determined by the expected contest outcome and thus also by the distribution of the private valuation. The findings can be applied to environmental conflicts, for example to shed some light on how a valuation study of ecosystem services in Lofoten can affect the probability of opening up the area for oil and gas exploration, and also the appropriate level of compensation to negatively affected parties.

We explore four decades of cyclical and long-run dynamics in income distribution and economic activity for a panel of thirteen OECD countries, as measured by the wage share and the output gap. When modeled as a Goodwin model, our results suggest that economic activity is weakly profit-led and that the wage share is pro-cyclical. Our estimated model is dynamically stable and has a long-run equilibrium in distribution-utilization space. An extension of the model suggests that this equilibrium has been shifting south-west towards a lower wage share and a loss of economic activity. This finding is suggestive of a coordination failure among industrialized nations; it could be that the governments of these countries are engaging in a race to the bottom in terms of the wage share; it may even be that this race has the undesirable consequence of decreasing economic efficiency.

The paper extends the combined research methods literature with an investigation of the impact of ill health on assets and consumption behaviour of the chronically poor. Focusing on Uganda, and using national household panel data for 1992-99, the study extends the survey by visiting the same households and collecting both life history and further quantitative data. By adopting such an approach we are able to further explain a number of important issues that underly the role ill health plays in the lives of the chronically poor. In particular we find a clear association between sickness and descents into poverty. Asset smoothing seems to be very common amongst households that encounter general sickness, with food consumption almost always reduced, for a period of time, before selling assets. In contrast households suffering from HIV/AIDS, or at least severely physically debilitating sickness, often consumption smooth. Cet article complète la littérature utilisant différentes méthodes de recherche avec une étude de l’impact d’un mauvais état de santé sur les biens et le comportement de consommation des chroniquement pauvres. Ciblée sur l’Ouganda et se basant sur les données d’enquêtes nationales menées sur un échantillon représentatif de ménages en 1992 et en 1999, cette étude a porté sur les mêmes ménages et a collecté des données sur la vie des personnes interrogées et d’autres données quantitatives. Cette approche nous permet de mieux expliquer un certain nombre de points importants qui sous-tendent le rôle qu’un mauvais état de santé joue dans la vie des chroniquement pauvres. Nous avons notamment identifié un lien clair entre la maladie et le basculement dans la pauvreté. Le lissage des biens semble être très fréquent chez les ménages confrontés à la maladie ; ils commencent presque toujours par réduire leur consommation alimentaire, pendant une certaine période, avant de vendre leurs biens. En revanche, les ménages atteints du VIH/SIDA, ou d’une autre maladie physiquement très invalidante, lissent souvent leur consommation. El artículo amplía la documentación existente sobre métodos de investigación combinados con una investigación sobre el impacto de la mala salud en los bienes y en el comportamiento del consumo de los pobres crónicos. Centrándose en Uganda, y utilizando datos del panel de hogares nacionales para 1992-1999, el estudio amplía la investigación visitando las mismas casas y recopilando datos sobre vidas y datos cuantitativos adicionales. Adoptando este enfoque podemos explicar además varias cuestiones importantes subyacentes al papel que juega la mala salud en las vidas de los pobres crónicos. En particular, encontramos una clara asociación entre la enfermedad y la caída en la pobreza. Suavizar los bienes parece ser muy común entre los hogares que se topan con enfermedades comunes, reduciendo casi siempre el consumo de alimentos, por un espacio de tiempo, antes de vender los bienes. En contraposición, en los hogares que sufren VIH/SIDA, o al menos enfermedades graves físicamente debilitadoras, a menudo el consumo se suaviza.

We consider the impact of the 2004 EU enlargement on enterprise performance and the exporting behavior of German service enterprises in Germany’s eastern border region. Our results from regression adjusted difference-in-differences estimators combined with matching and panel data from official statistics suggest that the EU enlargement had a negative impact on the turnover and export intensity of large enterprises in the border region. For small enterprises, we find an annual increase in turnover by 2.3% in 2004 and an annual decrease in profitability by 1.5 and 1.9 percentage points in 2004 and 2005, respectively.

We study the impact of trade on productivity using Chilean plant-level data (1982-1999). Our contribution is to disentangle the impact of export and import barriers. Firstly, we estimate the production functions to obtain plant TFP. Secondly, we estimate trade barriers (border effects) between Chile and its trading partners at the industry level and over time. Finally, we test the impact of trade barriers by regressing productivity on border effect estimates. A fall in export barriers improves productivity in traded sectors, while the reduction of import barriers might foster productivity in export industries but it hurts firms in import-competing ones., Ce travail étudie l'impact des réformes commerciales chiliennes sur l'évolution de la productivité des établissements manufacturiers. Nous utilisons des données de panel micro sur la période 1979-2000. La principale contribution du papier consiste en la construction et l'utilisation de deux types de mesures de la libéralisation commerciale pour distinguer les difficultés à l'exportation et à l'importation. Nous estimons d'abord la productivité totale de facteurs au niveau des établissements en tenant compte de l'hétérogénéité intrinsèque des firmes qui évolue au cours du temps. Ensuite, à l'aide des équations de gravité nous estimons pour chaque industrie les effets des frontières entre le Chili et ses principaux partenaires. Enfin nous estimons l'impact de la libéralisation du commerce extérieur en utilisant les mesures estimées dans l'étape précédente. Nous trouvons que la réduction des difficultés à l'exportation a un effet positif sur la productivité dans les secteurs exposés au commerce relativement aux secteurs abrités. Par ailleurs, par rapport à ces derniers, les firmes appartenant aux secteurs exportateurs augmentent leur productivité à la suite d'une réduction des barrières à l'importation. Ce n'est pas le cas pour les firmes opérant dans les secteurs en concurrence avec les biens d'importations dans les quels les estimations des fonctions des productions révèlent des rendements croissants.

International audience; We study linear factor models under the assumptions that factors are mutually independent and independent of errors, and errors can be correlated to some extent. Under the factor non-Gaussianity, second-to-fourth-order moments are shown to yield full identification of the matrix of factor loadings. We develop a simple algorithm to estimate the matrix of factor loadings from these moments. We run Monte Carlo simulations and apply our methodology to data on cognitive test scores, and financial data on stock returns.

International audience; Vector autoregressions (VARs) are important tools in time series analysis. However, relatively little is known about the finite-sample behaviour of parameter estimators. We address this issue, by investigating ordinary least squares (OLS) estimators given a data generating process that is a purely nonstationary first-order VAR. Specifically, we use Monte Carlo simulation and numerical optimisation to derive response surfaces for OLS bias and variance, in terms of VAR dimensions, given correct specification and several types of over-parameterisation of the model: we include a constant, and a constant and trend, and introduce excess lags. We then examine the correction factors that are required for the least squares estimator to attain the minimum mean squared error (MSE). Our results improve and extend one of the main finite-sample multivariate analytical bias results of Abadir, Hadri and Tzavalis [Abadir, K.M., Hadri, K., Tzavalis, E., 1999. The influence of VAR dimensions on estimator biases. Econometrica 67, 163-181], generalise the univariate variance and MSE findings of Abadir [Abadir, K.M., 1995. Unbiased estimation as a solution to testing for random walks. Economics Letters 47, 263-268] to the multivariate setting, and complement various asymptotic studies.

This paper studies the impact of outsourcing on individual wages in three European countries with markedly different labour market institutions: Germany, the UK and Denmark. To do so we use individual level data sets for the three countries and construct comparable measures of outsourcing at the industry level, distinguishing outsourcing by broad region. Estimating the same specification on different data shows that there are some interesting differences in the effect of outsourcing across countries. We discuss some possible reasons for these differences based on labour market institutions.

Tomás António da Guarda Cabreira (1865-1918) destacou-se como economista e político através de uma ampla e diversificada obra escrita sobre temas económicos e financeiros, através de uma curta intervenção política como deputado e senador a partir de 1911 e como Ministro das Finanças entre Fevereiro e Junho de 1914. A análise dos principais aspectos do seu pensamento político-económico, revelados em especial na sua abordagem dos problemas financeiros portugueses, são o objectivo principal deste trabalho. Tomás Cabreira revela-se do ponto de vista doutrinário e teórico um economista liberal, pragmático e eclético. Tomás António da Guarda Cabreira (1865-1918) stood out as an economist and politician thanks to a large and diverse set of publications on economic and financial issues, in addition to his short political activity as a deputy and senator after 1911 and as Minister of Finance from February to June 1914. The main purpose of this paper is to analyse the principal aspects of his political economic thought, especially concerning his views on Portugal's financial problems. Tomás Cabreira reveals himself as an economist who is liberal, pragmatic and eclectic from the doctrinal and theoretical perspective.

State price densities (SPD) are an important element in applied quantitative finance. In a Black-Scholes model they are lognormal distributions with constant volatility parameter. In practice volatility changes and the distribution deviates from log-normality. We estimate SPDs using EUREX option data on the DAX index via a nonparametric estimator of the second derivative of the (European) call price function. The estimator is constrained so as to satisfy no-arbitrage constraints and it corrects for intraday covariance structure. Given a low dimensional representation of this SPD we study its dynamic for the years 1995–2003. We calculate a prediction corridor for the DAX for a 45 day forecast. The proposed algorithm is simple, it allows calculation of future volatility and can be applied to hedging exotic options.
