Abstract

Abstract This study provides an analysis of atmospheric neutrino oscillations at the ESSnuSB far detector facility. The prospects of the two cylindrical Water Cherenkov detectors with a total fiducial mass of 540 kt are investigated over 10 years of data taking in the standard three-flavor oscillation scenario. We present the confidence intervals for the determination of mass ordering, θ 23 octant as well as for the precisions on sin2 θ 23 and Δ m 31 2 $$ \left|\Delta {m}_{31}^2\right| $$ . It is shown that mass ordering can be resolved by 3σ CL (5σ CL) after 4 years (10 years) regardless of the true neutrino mass ordering. Correspondingly, the wrong θ 23 octant could be excluded by 3σ CL after 4 years (8 years) in the case where the true neutrino mass ordering is normal ordering (inverted ordering). The results presented in this work are complementary to the accelerator neutrino program in the ESSnuSB project.

Abstract

Abstract Neutrino oscillation experiments provide a unique window in exploring several new physics scenarios beyond the standard three flavour. One such scenario is quantum decoherence in neutrino oscillation which tends to destroy the interference pattern of neutrinos reaching the far detector from the source. In this work, we study the decoherence in neutrino oscillation in the context of the ESSnuSB experiment. We consider the energy-independent decoherence parameter and derive the analytical expressions for P μe and P μμ probabilities in vacuum. We have computed the capability of ESSnuSB to put bounds on the decoherence parameters namely, Γ21 and Γ32 and found that the constraints on Γ21 are competitive compared to the DUNE bounds and better than the most stringent LBL ones from MINOS/MINOS+. We have also investigated the impact of decoherence on the ESSnuSB measurement of the Dirac CP phase δ CP and concluded that it remains robust in the presence of new physics.

Abstract

Abstract This article describes the setup and performance of the near and far detectors in the Double Chooz experiment. The electron antineutrinos of the Chooz nuclear power plant were measured in two identically designed detectors with different average baselines of about 400 m and 1050 m from the two reactor cores. Over many years of data taking the neutrino signals were extracted from interactions in the detectors with the goal of measuring a fundamental parameter in the context of neutrino oscillation, the mixing angle $$\theta _{13}$$ θ 13 . The central part of the Double Chooz detectors was a main detector comprising four cylindrical volumes filled with organic liquids. From the inside towards the outside there were volumes containing gadolinium-loaded scintillator, gadolinium-free scintillator, a buffer oil and, optically separated, another liquid scintillator acting as veto system. Above this main detector an additional outer veto system using plastic scintillator strips was installed. The technologies developed in Double Chooz were inspiration for several other antineutrino detectors in the field. The detector design allowed implementation of efficient background rejection techniques including use of pulse shape information provided by the data acquisition system. The Double Chooz detectors featured remarkable stability, in particular for the detected photons, as well as high radiopurity of the detector components.

Abstract

Abstract This article presents the potential of a combined analysis of the JUNO and KM3NeT/ORCA experiments to determine the neutrino mass ordering. This combination is particularly interesting as it significantly boosts the potential of either detector, beyond simply adding their neutrino mass ordering sensitivities, by removing a degeneracy in the determination of ∆ m 31 2 $$ {m}_{31}^2 $$ between the two experiments when assuming the wrong ordering. The study is based on the latest projected performances for JUNO, and on simulation tools using a full Monte Carlo approach to the KM3NeT/ORCA response with a careful assessment of its energy systematics. From this analysis, a 5σ determination of the neutrino mass ordering is expected after 6 years of joint data taking for any value of the oscillation parameters. This sensitivity would be achieved after only 2 years of joint data taking assuming the current global best-fit values for those parameters for normal ordering.

Abstract

Abstract In this paper, we present the physics performance of the ESSnuSB experiment in the standard three flavor scenario using the updated neutrino flux calculated specifically for the ESSnuSB configuration and updated migration matrices for the far detector. Taking conservative systematic uncertainties corresponding to a normalization error of $$5\%$$ 5 % for signal and $$10\%$$ 10 % for background, we find that there is $$10\sigma $$ 10 σ $$(13\sigma )$$ ( 13 σ ) CP violation discovery sensitivity for the baseline option of 540 km (360 km) at $$\delta _\mathrm{CP} = \pm 90^\circ $$ δ CP = ± 90 ∘ . The corresponding fraction of $$\delta _\mathrm{CP}$$ δ CP for which CP violation can be discovered at more than $$5 \sigma $$ 5 σ is $$70\%$$ 70 % . Regarding CP precision measurements, the $$1\sigma $$ 1 σ error associated with $$\delta _\mathrm{CP} = 0^\circ $$ δ CP = 0 ∘ is around $$5^\circ $$ 5 ∘ and with $$\delta _\mathrm{CP} = -90^\circ $$ δ CP = - 90 ∘ is around $$14^\circ $$ 14 ∘ $$(7^\circ )$$ ( 7 ∘ ) for the baseline option of 540 km (360 km). For hierarchy sensitivity, one can have $$3\sigma $$ 3 σ sensitivity for 540 km baseline except $$\delta _\mathrm{CP} = \pm 90^\circ $$ δ CP = ± 90 ∘ and $$5\sigma $$ 5 σ sensitivity for 360 km baseline for all values of $$\delta _\mathrm{CP}$$ δ CP . The octant of $$\theta _{23}$$ θ 23 can be determined at $$3 \sigma $$ 3 σ for the values of: $$\theta _{23} > 51^\circ $$ θ 23 > 51 ∘ ( $$\theta _{23} < 42^\circ $$ θ 23 < 42 ∘ and $$\theta _{23} > 49^\circ $$ θ 23 > 49 ∘ ) for baseline of 540 km (360 km). Regarding measurement precision of the atmospheric mixing parameters, the allowed values at $$3 \sigma $$ 3 σ are: $$40^\circ< \theta _{23} < 52^\circ $$ 40 ∘ < θ 23 < 52 ∘ ( $$42^\circ< \theta _{23} < 51.5^\circ $$ 42 ∘ < θ 23 < 51 . 5 ∘ ) and $$2.485 \times 10^{-3}$$ 2.485 × 10 - 3 eV $$^2< \varDelta m^2_{31} < 2.545 \times 10^{-3}$$ 2 < Δ m 31 2 < 2.545 × 10 - 3 eV $$^2$$ 2 ( $$2.49 \times 10^{-3}$$ 2.49 × 10 - 3 eV $$^2< \varDelta m^2_{31} < 2.54 \times 10^{-3}$$ 2 < Δ m 31 2 < 2.54 × 10 - 3 eV $$^2$$ 2 ) for the baseline of 540 km (360 km).

Abstract

ESSnuSB is a design study for an experiment to measure the CP violation in the leptonic sector at the second neutrino oscillation maximum using a neutrino beam driven by the uniquely powerful ESS linear accelerator. The reduced impact of systematic errors on sensitivity at the second maximum allows for a very precise measurement of the CP violating parameter. This review describes the fundamental advantages of measurement at the second maximum, the necessary upgrades to the ESS linac in order to produce a neutrino beam, the near and far detector complexes, and the expected physics reach of the proposed ESSnuSB experiment, concluding with the near future developments aimed at the project realization.

Abstract

We present a new design study of the neutrino Super Beam based on the Superconducting Proton Linac at CERN. This beam is aimed at megaton mass physics, a large water Cherenkov detector, proposed for the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane in France, with a baseline of 130 km. The aim of this proposed facility is to study CP violation in the neutrino sector. In the study reported here, we have developed the conceptual design of the neutrino beam, especially the target and the magnetic focusing device. Indeed, this beam presents several unprecedented challenges, related to the high primary proton beam power (4 MW), the high repetition rate (50 Hz), and the low kinetic energy of the protons (4.5 GeV). The design is completed by a study of all the main components of the system, starting from the transport system to guide the beam to the target up to the beam dump. This is the first complete study of a neutrino beam based on a pebble-bed target capable of standing the large heat deposition of MW class proton beams.

Abstract

The EUROnu project has studied three possible options for future, high intensity neutrino oscillation facilities in Europe. The first is a Super Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of pions created by bombarding targets with a 4 MW proton beam from the CERN High Power Superconducting Proton Linac. The far detector for this facility is the 500 kt MEMPHYS water Cherenkov, located in the Fréjus tunnel. The second facility is the Neutrino Factory, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of μ^{+} and μ^{-} beams in a storage ring. The far detector in this case is a 100 kt magnetized iron neutrino detector at a baseline of 2000 km. The third option is a Beta Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of beta emitting isotopes, in particular ^{6}He and ^{18}Ne, also stored in a ring. The far detector is also the MEMPHYS detector in the Fréjus tunnel. EUROnu has undertaken conceptual designs of these facilities and studied the performance of the detectors. Based on this, it has determined the physics reach of each facility, in particular for the measurement of CP violation in the lepton sector, and estimated the cost of construction. These have demonstrated that the best facility to build is the Neutrino Factory. However, if a powerful proton driver is constructed for another purpose or if the MEMPHYS detector is built for astroparticle physics, the Super Beam also becomes very attractive.

Abstract

This conceptual design report provides a detailed account of the European Spallation Source neutrino Super Beam (ESS$\nu$SB) feasibility study. This facility has been proposed after the measurements reported in 2012 of a relatively large value of the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$, which raised the possibility of observing potential CP violation in the leptonic sector with conventional neutrino beams. The measured value of $\theta_{13}$ also privileges the $2^{nd}$ oscillation maximum for the discovery of CP violation instead of the more typically studied $1^{st}$ maximum. The sensitivity at this $2^{nd}$ oscillation maximum is about three times higher than at the $1^{st}$ one, which implies a reduced influence of systematic errors. Working at the $2^{nd}$ oscillation maximum requires a very intense neutrino beam with an appropriate energy. The world's most intense pulsed spallation neutron source, the European Spallation Source (ESS), will have a proton linac operating at 5\,MW power, 2\,GeV kinetic energy and 14~Hz repetition rate (3~ms pulse duration, 4\% duty cycle) for neutron production. In this design study it is proposed to double the repetition rate and compress the beam pulses to the level of microseconds in order to provide an additional 5~MW proton beam for neutrino production. The physics performance has been evaluated for such a neutrino super beam, in conjunction with a megaton-scale underground water Cherenkov neutrino detector installed at a distance of 360--550\,km from ESS. The ESS proton linac upgrades, the accumulator ring required for proton-pulse compression, the target station design and optimisation, the near and far detector complexes, and the physics potential of the facility are all described in this report. Abstract

The goal of the ESS𝜈SB project is to discover and measure neutrino CP violation with unprecedented sensitivity. The associated ESS𝜈SB H2020 Design Study is aimed at investigating and proposing a conceptual design of a new neutrino superbeam in Europe. The Target Station is a key element of this project, since it will produce a high intensity neutrino superbeam from a 5MW proton beam delivered by the European Spallation Source at Lund. Work Package 4 of this project focuses on the optimization of the physics performance of the elements producing the beam, such as the targets and the magnetic horns, as well as on the technical aspects related to the Target Station design. The 5MW proton beam will be split laterally into four 1.25MW beams, each with 1.3 μs proton pulses and 14 Hz repetition rate, which will hit four separate targets inserted inside four horns. The production of the neutrino beam under such conditions requires the development of technologies capable of working at a MW power scale, both for the target and for the other components of the target station facility.

International audience; A four-layer muon telescope has been built, employing the equipment and electronics developedfor the Top Tracker (TT) detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO).It will serve as a demonstrator of the hardware capabilities in terms of detection efficiency, processing power and system reliability. The entire readout, trigger and acquisition systems havebeen conceived and built around versatile modular electronics embedding the latest generation ofsystem on chips. A detailed description of the telescope will be given along with the status of the TT electronics and their preliminary validation tests.

Abstract

A new generation of flat panel photomultiplier tube (PMT) based on micro-channel plates (MCP) offers characteristics suitable for PET imaging. We are developing a preclinical PET system composed of four detection modules arranged around the animal. Each module consists in 768 LYSO:Ce crystals read at both ends by MCP-PMT. The particular geometry combined with an inner diameter of 61.2 mm lead to a high detection efficiency with a volumetric spatial resolution of 1 μL. The purpose of this work is to characterize the 1024 anodes of the MCP-PMT (Planacon XP85023/A1, Photonis Corp.) used in our preclinical PET system. The Planacon has very compact size (58 × 58 × 13.7 mm3) with an active area of 53 × 53 mm2. The anode array consists in a 32 × 32 matrix in which each individual anode is 1.4 × 1.4 mm2 with a pitch of 1.6 mm. Due to the lack of backside connectors and in order to individually readout the anode current, a dedicated connection board has been developed. The dark current, the gain and the timing resolution of one anode are measured as well as the charge sharing, the gain uniformity and the intrinsic spatial resolution on the entire active field of view. With a timing resolution below 100 ps, an intrinsic spatial resolution of 400 μm, a low dark current and a high gain, the Planacon XP85023/A1 offers a promising photodetector for PET imaging.

Abstract

In SPECT imaging, improvement or deterioration of performance is mostly due to collimator design. Classical SPECT systems mainly use parallel hole or pinhole collimators. Rotating slat collimators (RSC) can be an interesting alternative to optimize the tradeoff between detection efficiency and spatial resolution. The present study was conducted using a RSC system for small animal imaging called CLiR. The CLiR system was used in planar mode only. In a previous study, planar 2D projections were reconstructed using the well-known filtered backprojection algorithm (FBP). In this paper, we investigated the use of the statistical reconstruction algorithm maximum likelihood expectation maximization (MLEM) to reconstruct 2D images with the CLiR system using a probability matrix calculated using an analytic approach. The primary objective was to propose a method to quickly generate a light system matrix, which facilitates its handling and storage, while providing accurate and reliable performance. Two other matrices were calculated using GATE Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the performance obtained using the matrix calculated analytically. The first matrix calculated using GATE took all the physics processes into account, where the second did not consider for the scattering, as the analytical matrix did not take this physics process into account either. 2D images were reconstructed using FBP and MLEM with the three different probability matrices. Both simulated and experimental data were used. A comparative study of these images was conducted using different metrics: the modulation transfert function, the signal-to-noise ratio and quantification measurement. All the results demonstrated the suitability of using a probability matrix calculated analytically. It provided similar results in terms of spatial resolution (about 0.6 mm with differences

Abstract

Very intense neutrino beams and large neutrino detectors will be needed in order to enable the discovery of CP violation in the leptonic sector. We propose to use the proton linac of the European Spallation Source currently under construction in Lund, Sweden to deliver, in parallel with the spallation neutron production, a very intense, cost effective and high performance neutrino beam. The baseline program for the European Spallation Source linac is that it will be fully operational at 5 MW average power by 2022, producing 2 GeV 2.86 ms long proton pulses at a rate of 14 Hz. Our proposal is to upgrade the linac to 10 MW average power and 28 Hz, producing 14 pulses/s for neutron production and 14 pulses/s for neutrino production. Furthermore, because of the high current required in the pulsed neutrino horn, the length of the pulses used for neutrino production needs to be compressed to a few $\mu$s with the aid of an accumulator ring. A long baseline experiment using this Super Beam and a megaton underground Water Cherenkov detector located in existing mines 300-600 km from Lund will make it possible to discover leptonic CP violation at 5 $\sigma$ significance level in up to 50% of the leptonic Dirac CP-violating phase range. This experiment could also determine the neutrino mass hierarchy at a significance level of more than 3 $\sigma$ if this issue will not already have been settled by other experiments by then. The mass hierarchy performance could be increased by combining the neutrino beam results with those obtained from atmospheric neutrinos detected by the same large volume detector. This detector will also be used to measure the proton lifetime, detect cosmological neutrinos and neutrinos from supernova explosions. Results on the sensitivity to leptonic CP violation and the neutrino mass hierarchy are presented. Abstract

The OPERA neutrino oscillation experiment is based on the use of the Emulsion Cloud Chamber (ECC). In the OPERA ECC, nuclear emulsion films acting as very high precision tracking detectors are interleaved with lead plates providing a massive target for neutrino interactions. We report on studies related to the effects occurring from the contact between emulsion and lead. A low radioactivity lead is required in order to minimize the number of background tracks in emulsions and to achieve the required performance in the reconstruction of neutrino events. It was observed that adding other chemical elements to the lead, in order to improve the mechanical properties, may significantly increase the level of radioactivity on the emulsions. A detailed study was made in order to choose a lead alloy with good mechanical properties and an appropriate packing technique so as to have a low enough effective radioactivity., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

The OPERA neutrino detector at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in appearance mode, through the study of nu_mu to nu_tau oscillations. The apparatus consists of a lead/emulsion-film target complemented by electronic detectors. It is placed in the high-energy, long-baseline CERN to LNGS beam (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. In August 2006 a first run with CNGS neutrinos was successfully conducted. A first sample of neutrino events was collected, statistically consistent with the integrated beam intensity. After a brief description of the beam and of the various sub-detectors, we report on the achievement of this milestone, presenting the first data and some analysis results., Submitted to the New Journal of Physics

Abstract

Recent researches in PET instrumentation tend to improve the reconstructed spatial resolution using the gamma ray Depth Of Interaction (DOI) information. This method, already introduced by Moses et al., requires reading both ends of a scintillating crystal to be efficient. The recorded charges obtained by the two photodetector such as Photomultiplier Tubes (PMT) or Avalanche PhotoDiodes (APD) are dependent on the depth gamma ray interaction. Braem et al. recently used the contrast calculated as the ratio between the difference of the recorded charges and their sum to improve the DOI spatial resolution. In this work, we investigate the optimization of the crystal length and coating to improve the depth of interaction spatial resolution in PET applications. For a 1.5 × 1.5 mm2 LYSO:Ce crystal section read at both ends by PMT, we find that a length of 25 mm and a coating made with PMMA and 30% of TiO 2 are appropriate to reach a DOI spatial resolution of 1 mm.

Abstract

The main task of the Target Tracker detector of the long baseline neutrino oscillation OPERA experiment is to locate in which of the target elementary constituents, the lead/emulsion bricks, the neutrino interactions have occurred and also to give calorimetric information about each event. The technology used consists in walls of two planes of plastic scintillator strips, one per transverse direction. Wavelength shifting fibres collect the light signal emitted by the scintillator strips and guide it to both ends where it is read by multi-anode photomultiplier tubes. Abstract

Possible consequences of using X-ray devices as imaging support during surgical practices may be the development of skin diseases due to the combination of high local dose and long exposition time. Our group developed an original dosimeter which meets the following requirements: • transparency to X-ray to avoid image degradation, • measurement and localization in real-time of the dose absorbed by the skin on the whole exposed surface. The main purpose of this dosimeter is to allow the practitioner to change the beam orientation during the intervention in order to reduce the local dose and then avoid, in the extreme cases, the development of tumors. The dosimeter is composed of a lattice of scintillator fibers connected to a 64 channels photomultiplier tube. The detector combined with an appropriate electronics provides in real time an accurate measurement of the dose on the whole exposed surface. A linear relation between the photon count rate and the dose is demonstrated. Our dosimeter provides also in real time a map of the dose which leads to a very efficient monitoring of the dose during all the exposition time.

Abstract

The power supply studies for the four-horn system for the CERN to Fr\'ejus neutrino Super Beam oscillation experiment are discussed here. The power supply is being studied to meet the physics potential and the mega-watt (MW) power requirements of the proton driver of the Super Beam. A one-half sinusoid current waveform with a 350 kA maximum current and pulse length of 100 \mu s at 50 Hz frequency is generated and distributed to four-horns. In order to provide the necessary current needed to focus the charged mesons producing the neutrino beam, a bench of capacitors is charged at 50 Hz frequency to a +12 kV reference voltage and then discharged through a large switch to each horn via a set of strip-lines at the same rate. A current recovery stage allows to invert rapidly the negative voltage of the capacitor after the discharging stage in order to recuperate large part of the injected energy and thus to limit the power consuption. The energy recovery efficiency of that system is very high at 97%. Abstract

SMEDIS is an ongoing research project funded by the European Union under the Environment and Climate Research Programme for the period 1996-1999. The project is coordinated by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE, UK) with two other main partners: Cambridge Environmental Research Consultants (CERC, UK) and Electricite de France (EDF, France). Ten additional partners from across Europe are also participants in the project. The main objective of the project is to develop a methodology for the evaluation of dense gas atmospheric dispersion models used in the study of accidental releases of explosive or toxic materials. This evaluation is composed of a scientific assessment of each model, together with a validation by comparison with available experimental data. This paper describes more specifically the database constructed, and the validation performed by the participants involved in the project. Preliminary results indicate that the restriction for arcwise concentrations leads to an optimistic view of model performance when complex effects are present and that, in general, statistical performance is better for more sophisticated models.

Abstract

A comparative study has been made for the modelling of a passive release from an L-shaped building, in the presence of wind, using dispersion models of various complexities. Selected for the comparison were the one- and two-dimensional shallow layer models DISPLAY-1 and DISPLAY-2 and the full three-dimensional model ADREA-HF, all being part of the Dense Gas Dispersion Code Package, jointly developed by NCSR-DEMOKRITOS and JRC-ISPRA. For the shallow layer models, turbulence is modelled by means of the entrainment velocity concept, while for the three-dimensional model, a one-equation turbulence closure is used, according to which the turbulent kinetic energy conservation equation is solved. Length scales depend on the local and global flow characteristics of the L-shaped building. Concepts of volume porosity and area permeability are used. The pressure drop due to the building is taken into account by adding resistance terms in the shallow momentum equations. For model validation, the EMU-A1 wind tunnel experiment has been selected. The model results are compared against the experimental concentrations, using a statistical evaluation approach. The results clearly demonstrate the applicability of the model ADREA-HF for the present complex topography. For the shallow layer models acceptable results were obtained in CPU times much lower than ADREA-HF. Further improvements of the model for additional entrainment due to the presence of obstacles is necessary.

Abstract

Counselors' recognition of factors in lethality of suicide was studied using the same scale of factors as was used in Holmes and Howard's study of other professional groups. 15 professors of counselor education, 12 post-secondary counselors, 47 secondary-level counselors, and 20 elementary-level counselors completed an examination of signs of suicide. The data for each of these groups are presented and analyzed and show counselors' recognition to be equal to those of social workers and ministers.

Abstract

This study was designed to estimate the correlations of the Zung Self-rating Depression Scale with age and sex in a psychiatric outpatient sample. 378 male and 671 female clients of 13 to 89 yr. of age completed the scale as part of their admission to an outpatient psychiatric clinic. The scores were classified according to sex and age (in 10-yr. groups). Analysis showed some statistically significant differences according to age and sex, but the magnitude of those differences was small. Comparison of these data with a previously published set of data from a nonpsychiatric sample showed, as would be expected, the psychiatric group scored consistently higher.

Abstract

Administered the short form of the Luscher Color Test and the booklet form of the MMPI to 42 graduate students in a counseling program. For every S a report that described personality was written from the test results, i.e., each S had two reports, one from the Color Test and one from the MMPI. These reports were written independently by two separate examiners. Two independent raters then read the reports on each S and noted the degree of agreement between the two reports. The overall results showed very little agreement between the Color Test and the MMPI. Reasons for the poor rate of agreement are discussed.

The Luscher Color Test (Luscher & Scott, 1969) presents eight color patches for a client to twice arrange in order of preference, the order suggesting personality traits. One of the color/personality relationships suggested by Luscher 1s that emotionally disturbed clients may prefer the color violet. Specifically, Luscher (Luscher & Scott, 1969) stated, "The mentally mature will normally prefer one of the basic colors; the mentally and emotionally immature on the other hand, may prefer violet" (p. 66 ) . The present article offers data on the relationship between emotional disturbance and the choice of violet as the preferred color. The Luscher Color Test was completed by 425 male and 718 female patients of an out-patient psychiatric clinic as part of their admission. Color preference was determined by noting the first color choice from the second administration which Luscher considers most accurate. Specific diagnoses were not available. Fewer than 10% of the clients had been hospitalized. The male patients ranged in age from 7 yr. to 88 yr. of age (M = 38.36 yr., SD = 17.58). Of the 425 first choices, violet was chosen 47 times as the preferred color, which was only one time more than the color green. Over-all, this places the color violet fourth in rank. The female patients ranged in age from 10 yr. to 93 yr. of age (M = 38.41 yr., SD = 16.11). Of the women's 718 first choices, 101 chose violet as the preferred color. As was true of the men, the over-all rank for violet, in terms of preference, was fourth. If these data are broken down by age, they are no more encouraging for the violet/ personality relationship than the previous data. Boys 19 yr. and under ( N = 54) chose violet only eight times (with a ranking of fourth place). Men 20 to 39 yr. of age ( N = 204) chose violet 21 times (equal to green, with a tie for fourth/fifth rank). Males 40-59 yr. ( N = 110) chose violet 8 rimes, a rank of fifth or sixth (tied with brown). Men 60 yr. and older ( N = 57) chose violet 10 times, a tie with red for a rank of second or third. Girls 19 yr. and under ( N = 77) chose the color violet as the first choice 14 times ( a rank of third place). Women 2@ to 39 yr. ( N = 341) ranked violet fourth, choosing 50 times. Women 40 to 59 yr. ( N = 216) chose violet 25 times, a rank of fourth over-all. Women 60 yr. and older ( N = 84) also ranked violet fourth place over-all, with 12 patients preferring it as their first choice. These data clearly indicate that people with emotional problems have no unusual preference for the color violet. The fact that all subjects in this study were psychiatric patients attests to this. Luscher's suggestion of a preference for violet correlating with mental or emotional immaturity has not been supported in this study.

Abstract

In SPECT imaging, improvement or deterioration of performance is mostly due to collimator design. Classical SPECT systems mainly use parallel hole or pinhole collimators. Rotating slat collimators (RSC) can be an interesting alternative to optimize the tradeoff between detection efficiency and spatial resolution. The present study was conducted using a RSC system for small animal imaging called CLiR. The CLiR system was used in planar mode only. In a previous study, planar 2D projections were reconstructed using the well-known filtered backprojection algorithm (FBP). In this paper, we investigated the use of the statistical reconstruction algorithm maximum likelihood expectation maximization (MLEM) to reconstruct 2D images with the CLiR system using a probability matrix calculated using an analytic approach. The primary objective was to propose a method to quickly generate a light system matrix, which facilitates its handling and storage, while providing accurate and reliable performance. Two other matrices were calculated using GATE Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the performance obtained using the matrix calculated analytically. The first matrix calculated using GATE took all the physics processes into account, where the second did not consider for the scattering, as the analytical matrix did not take this physics process into account either. 2D images were reconstructed using FBP and MLEM with the three different probability matrices. Both simulated and experimental data were used. A comparative study of these images was conducted using different metrics: the modulation transfert function, the signal-to-noise ratio and quantification measurement. All the results demonstrated the suitability of using a probability matrix calculated analytically. It provided similar results in terms of spatial resolution (about 0.6 mm with differences <5%), signal-to-noise ratio (differences <10%), or quality of image. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The OPERA neutrino experiment at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory has measured the velocity of neutrinos from the CERN CNGS beam over a baseline of about 730 km. The measurement is based on data taken by OPERA in the years 2009, 2010 and 2011. Dedicated upgrades of the CNGS timing system and of the OPERA detector, as well as a high precision geodesy campaign for the measurement of the neutrino baseline, allowed reaching comparable systematic and statistical accuracies. An arrival time of CNGS muon neutrinos with respect to the one computed assuming the speed of light in vacuum of (6:5 ± 7:4 (stat:) +8.34 -8.0(sys:)) ns was measured corresponding to a relative difference of the muon neutrino velocity with respect to the speed of light (v - c)=c = (2:7 ± 3:1 (stat:) +3.4 -3:3 (sys:)) × 10 -6. Abstract

The OPERA neutrino oscillation experiment has been designed to prove the appearance of ντ in a nearly pure νμ beam (CNGS) produced at CERN and detected in the underground Hall C of the Gran Sasso Laboratory, 730 km away from the source. In OPERA, τ leptons resulting from the interaction of ντ are produced in target units called bricks made of nuclear emulsion films interleaved with lead plates. The OPERA target contains 150000 of such bricks, for a total mass of 1.25 kton, arranged into walls interleaved with plastic scintillator strips. The detector is split into two identical supermodules, each supermodule containing a target section followed by a magnetic spectrometer for momentum and charge measurement of penetrating particles. Real time information from the scintillators and the spectrometers provide the identification of the bricks where the neutrino interactions occurred. The candidate bricks are extracted from the walls and, after X-ray marking and an exposure to cosmic rays for alignment, their emulsion films are developed and sent to the emulsion scanning laboratories to perform the accurate scan of the event. In this paper, we review the design and construction of the detector and of its related infrastructures, and report on some technical performances of the various components. The construction of the detector started in 2003 and it was completed in Summer 2008. The experiment is presently in the data taking phase. Abstract

To date, there is no cure for Parkinson's disease (PD). There is a pressing need for anti-neurodegenerative therapeutics that can slow or halt PD progression by targeting underlying disease mechanisms. Specifically, preventing the build-up of alpha-synuclein (αSyn) and its aggregated and mutated forms is a key therapeutic target. In this study, an adeno-associated viral vector loaded with the A53T gene mutation was used to induce rapid αSyn-associated PD pathogenesis in C57BL/6 mice. We tested the ability of a novel therapeutic, a single chain fragment variable (scFv) antibody with specificity only for pathologic forms of αSyn, to protect against αSyn-induced neurodegeneration, after unilateral viral vector injection in the substantia nigra. Additionally, polyanhydride nanoparticles, which provide sustained release of therapeutics with dose-sparing properties, were used as a delivery platform for the scFv. Through bi-weekly behavioral assessments and across multiple post-mortem immunochemical analyses, we found that the scFv-based therapies allowed the mice to recover motor activity and reduce overall αSyn expression in the substantia nigra. In summary, these novel scFv-based therapies, which are specific exclusively for pathological aggregates of αSyn, show early promise in blocking PD progression in a surrogate mouse PD model.

46. Quantum diffusion in spin chains with phase space methods.

Abstract

Connecting short-time microscopic dynamics with long-time hydrodynamics in strongly correlated quantum systems is one of the outstanding questions. In particular, it is hard to determine various hydrodynamic coefficients such as the diffusion constant or viscosity starting from a microscopic model: exact quantum simulations are limited to either small system sizes or to short times, which are insufficient to reach asymptotic behavior and so various approximations must be applied. We show that these difficulties, at least for particular models, can be circumvented by using the cluster truncated Wigner approximation (CTWA), which maps quantum Hamiltonian dynamics into classical Hamiltonian dynamics in auxiliary high-dimensional phase space. We apply CTWA to XXZ next-nearest-neighbor spin-1/2 chains and XY spin ladders, and find behavior consisting of short-time spin relaxation which gradually crosses over to emergent diffusive behavior at long times. For a random initial state, we show that CTWA correctly reproduces the whole spin spectral function. Necessary in this construction is sampling from properly fluctuating initial conditions: the Dirac mean-field (variational) ansatz, which neglects such fluctuations, leads to incorrect predictions.

Abstract

In SPECT imaging, improvement or deterioration of performance is mostly due to collimator design. Classical SPECT systems mainly use parallel hole or pinhole collimators. Rotating slat collimators (RSC) can be an interesting alternative to optimize the tradeoff between detection efficiency and spatial resolution. The present study was conducted using a RSC system for small animal imaging called CLiR. The CLiR system was used in planar mode only. In a previous study, planar 2D projections were reconstructed using the well-known filtered backprojection algorithm (FBP). In this paper, we investigated the use of the statistical reconstruction algorithm maximum likelihood expectation maximization (MLEM) to reconstruct 2D images with the CLiR system using a probability matrix calculated using an analytic approach. The primary objective was to propose a method to quickly generate a light system matrix, which facilitates its handling and storage, while providing accurate and reliable performance. Two other matrices were calculated using GATE Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the performance obtained using the matrix calculated analytically. The first matrix calculated using GATE took all the physics processes into account, where the second did not consider for the scattering, as the analytical matrix did not take this physics process into account either. 2D images were reconstructed using FBP and MLEM with the three different probability matrices. Both simulated and experimental data were used. A comparative study of these images was conducted using different metrics: the modulation transfert function, the signal-to-noise ratio and quantification measurement. All the results demonstrated the suitability of using a probability matrix calculated analytically. It provided similar results in terms of spatial resolution (about 0.6 mm with differences <5%), signal-to-noise ratio (differences <10%), or quality of image.

Abstract

Some current investigations based on small animal models are dedicated to functional cerebral imaging. They represent a fundamental tool to understand the mechanisms involved in neurodegenerative diseases. In the radiopharmaceutical development approach, the main challenge is to measure the radioactivity distribution in the brain of a subject with good temporal and spatial resolutions. Classical SPECT systems mainly use parallel hole or pinhole collimators. In this paper we investigate the use of a rotating slat collimator system for small animal brain imaging. The proposed prototype consists of a 64-channel multi-anode photomultiplier tube (H8804, Hamamatsu Corp.) coupled to a YAP:Ce crystal highly segmented into 32 strips of 0.575 × 18.4 × 10 mm(3). The parameters of the rotating slat collimator are optimized using GATE Monte Carlo simulations. The performance of the proposed prototype in terms of spatial resolution, detection efficiency and signal-to-noise ratio is compared to that obtained with a gamma camera equipped with a parallel hole collimator. Preliminary experimental results demonstrate that a spatial resolution of 1.54 mm can be achieved with a detection efficiency of 0.012% for a source located at 20 mm, corresponding to the position of the brain in the prototype field of view.
