Plants are widely recognized as chemical factories, with each species producing dozens to hundreds of unique secondary metabolites. These compounds shape the interactions between plants and their natural enemies. We explore the evolutionary patterns and processes by which plants generate chemical diversity, from evolving novel compounds to unique chemical profiles. We characterized the chemical profile of one-third of the species of tropical rainforest trees in the genus Inga (c. 100, Fabaceae) using ultraperformance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based metabolomics and applied phylogenetic comparative methods to understand the mode of chemical evolution. We show: each Inga species contain structurally unrelated compounds and high levels of phytochemical diversity; closely related species have divergent chemical profiles, with individual compounds, compound classes, and chemical profiles showing little-to-no phylogenetic signal; at the evolutionary time scale, a species' chemical profile shows a signature of divergent adaptation. At the ecological time scale, sympatric species were the most divergent, implying it is also advantageous to maintain a unique chemical profile from community members; finally, we integrate these patterns with a model for how chemical diversity evolves. Taken together, these results show that phytochemical diversity and divergence are fundamental to the ecology and evolution of plants.

While global change research has greatly expanded in recent years, it remains unclear how environmental change will impact the mobility of many organisms. Flight is an important mode of transportation that affects ecological functions, including mate location, foraging, and migration. However, the effects of increasing temperature and diet quality on flight remain largely unknown. Here, we explore the effects of rearing temperature and larval diet quality on the flight ability of an iconic and ecologically threatened migratory insect, the monarch butterfly, Danaus plexippus. Monarch larvae were reared at two temperatures (25 °C and 28 °C) and on three milkweed species with varying phytochemistry (Asclepias incarnata, Asclepias syriaca, and Asclepias curassavica) in a fully factorial experiment. We tested flight ability using an automated flight mill, which measured cumulative flight distance, duration, and instantaneous velocity. Higher rearing temperatures reduced monarch flight ability, and larval diet quality influenced forewing morphology. Dietary milkweed with higher cardenolide concentrations (A. curassavica) induced shorter, wider forewings whereas milkweed with low to intermediate cardenolides (A. incarnata and A. syriaca) induced longer, narrower forewings, which are considered better for gliding flight used during migration. Our results provide evidence that projected increases in temperature and the subsequent expansion of tropical milkweed (A. curassavica) into the central breeding range of eastern North American migratory monarchs could reduce migration success. Further research is needed to identify mechanisms explaining the effects of diet and temperature on monarch flight ability and fitness, to ensure that appropriate conservation strategies are employed to preserve migratory populations.

1. The outstanding diversity of Amazonian forests is predicted to be the result of several processes. While tree lineages have dispersed repeatedly across the Amazon, interactions between plants and insects may be the principal mechanism structuring the communities at local scales.2. Using metabolomic and phylogenetic approaches, we investigated the patterns of historical assembly of plant communities across the Amazon based on the Neotropical genus of trees Inga (Leguminosae) at four, widely separated sites.3. Our results show a low degree of phylogenetic structure and a mixing of chemotypes across the whole Amazon basin, suggesting that although biogeography may play a role, the metacommunity for any local community in the Amazon is the entire basin. Yet, local communities are assembled by ecological processes, with the suite of Inga at a given site more divergent in chemical defenses than expected by chance4.Synthesis. This is the first study to present metabolomics data for nearly 100 species in a diverse Neotropical plant clade across the whole Amazonia. Our results demonstrate a role for plant‐herbivore interactions in shaping the clade’s community assembly at a local scale, and suggest that the high alpha diversity in Amazonian tree communities must be due in part to the interactions of diverse tree lineages with their natural enemies providing a high number of niche dimensions.

The structural and electrical properties of purified and potassium tetrabromoaurate [KAuBr4(aq)] doped semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes (S-SWCNTs) and metallic SWCNT (M-SWCNT) thin films are characterized as defects are introduced through ion irradiation with 150-keV 11B+ with fluences ranging from $1 \times 10^{12}$ to $1 \times 10^{15}$ ions/cm2. Prior to irradiation, doping achieves conductivity enhancements of $20\times $ and $2\times $ in the S-SWCNTs and M-SWCNTs, respectively. Irradiation of the samples results in decreased electrical conductivity of both electronic types of purified and doped SWCNTs as defect density is increased. However, the relative conductivity enhancement provided by the chemical dopant is maintained, thereby yielding more radiation tolerant electrical conductors. The presence of the dopant does not influence the level of damage imparted to the SWCNTs, but rather modifies the electronic properties of the SWCNTs by enhancing the carrier concentration.

A reagent-based treatment method was developed for the removal of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) from aqueous dispersions of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Based on a survey of various reagents, organic solvents emerged as the most effective at interrupting the SDS:SWCNT interaction without producing deleterious side reactions or causing precipitation of the surfactant. Specifically, treatment with acetone or acetonitrile allows for the facile isolation of SWCNTs with near complete removal of SDS through vacuum filtration, resulting in a 100x reduction in processing time. These findings were validated via quantitative analysis using thermogravimetric analysis, Raman spectroscopy, 4-point probe electrical measurement, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Subsequent thermal oxidation further enhances the purity of the reagent treated samples and yields bulk SWCNT samples with >95% carbonaceous purity. The proposed reagent treatment method thus demonstrates potential for large volume SWCNT processing.

Background Many CpGs become hyper or hypo-methylated with age. Multiple methods have been developed by Horvath et al. to estimate DNA methylation (DNAm) age including Pan-tissue, Skin & Blood, PhenoAge, and GrimAge. Pan-tissue and Skin & Blood try to estimate chronological age in the normal population whereas PhenoAge and GrimAge use surrogate markers associated with mortality to estimate biological age and its departure from chronological age. Here, we applied Horvath’s four methods to calculate and compare DNAm age in 499 subjects with type 1 diabetes (T1D) from the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial/Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (DCCT/EDIC) study using DNAm data measured by Illumina EPIC array in the whole blood. Association of the four DNAm ages with development of diabetic complications including cardiovascular diseases (CVD), nephropathy, retinopathy, and neuropathy, and their risk factors were investigated. Results Pan-tissue and GrimAge were higher whereas Skin & Blood and PhenoAge were lower than chronological age (p < 0.0001). DNAm age was not associated with the risk of CVD or retinopathy over 18–20 years after DNAm measurement. However, higher PhenoAge (β = 0.023, p = 0.007) and GrimAge (β = 0.029, p = 0.002) were associated with higher albumin excretion rate (AER), an indicator of diabetic renal disease, measured over time. GrimAge was also associated with development of both diabetic peripheral neuropathy (OR = 1.07, p = 9.24E−3) and cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (OR = 1.06, p = 0.011). Both HbA1c (β = 0.38, p = 0.026) and T1D duration (β = 0.01, p = 0.043) were associated with higher PhenoAge. Employment (β = − 1.99, p = 0.045) and leisure time (β = − 0.81, p = 0.022) physical activity were associated with lower Pan-tissue and Skin & Blood, respectively. BMI (β = 0.09, p = 0.048) and current smoking (β = 7.13, p = 9.03E−50) were positively associated with Skin & Blood and GrimAge, respectively. Blood pressure, lipid levels, pulse rate, and alcohol consumption were not associated with DNAm age regardless of the method used. Conclusions Various methods of measuring DNAm age are sub-optimal in detecting people at higher risk of developing diabetic complications although some work better than the others.

In a mass crisis event, Emergency Operation Centers (EOC) cannot meet the demand of thousands of individuals trying to alert or request emergency services. However, new technology, driven by the right policy and tested for strengths and weaknesses in a data rich, semi-predictable environment, can help to address current PSAP limitations. In this paper the authors present a system that aims to provide real-time data to emergency managers during a crisis event in such an environment – a college town during a football game or similarly attended event. The system is designed to accept, sort, triage and deliver hundreds of direct text messages from populations engaged in a crisis to emergency management staff who can respond. They posit that when a municipal or county-level EOC is cross-housed with a University EOC, multiple opportunities for development and funding occur. Universities can provide the technical expertise, funding, staffing, development and testing for systems that serve the EOC. Most importantly, Universities also provide disaster-like events that can be used as proxies for unpredictable mass crises during which more valid and reliable testing can occur. The authors present preliminary findings from a text-to-emergency service currently in use by Penn State University Athletics.

Washington State is the largest producer of juice grapes (Vitis labruscana ‘Concord’ and Vitis labrusca ‘Niagara’) and ranks second in wine grape production in the United States. Grapevine leafroll disease (GLD) is the most wide spread and economically significant virus disease in wine grapes in the state. Previous studies (2) have shown that Grapevine leafroll associated virus-3 (GLRaV-3) is the predominant virus associated with GLD. However, little is known about the incidence and economic impact of GLD on juice and table grapes. Because typical GLD symptoms may not be obvious among these cultivars, the prevalence and economic impact of GLD in Concord and Niagara, the most widely planted cultivars in Washington State, has received little attention from the grape and nursery industries. During the 2005 growing season, 32 samples from three vineyards and one nursery of ‘Concord’ and three samples from one nursery of ‘Niagara’ were collected randomly. Petiole extracts were tested by single-tube reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR; 3) with primers LC 1 (5′-CGC TAG GGC TGT GGA AGT ATT-3′) and LC 2 (5′-GTT GTC CCG GGT ACC AGA TAT-3′), specific for the heat shock protein 70 homologue (Hsp70h gene) of GLRaV-3 (GenBank Accession No. AF037268). One ‘Niagara’ nursery sample and eleven ‘Concord’ samples from the three vineyards tested positive for GLRaV-3, producing a single band of the expected size of 546 bp. The ‘Niagara’ and six of the ‘Concord’ RT-PCR products were cloned in pCR2.1 (Invitrogen Corp, Carlsbad, CA) and the sequences (GenBank Accession Nos. DQ780885, DQ780886, DQ780887, DQ780888, DQ780889, DQ780890, and DQ780891) compared with the respective sequence of a New York isolate of GLRaV-3 (GenBank Accession No. AF037268). The analysis revealed that GLRaV-3 isolates from ‘Concord’ and ‘Niagara’ share nucleotide identities of 94 to 98% and amino acid identities and similarities of 97 to 98% with the Hsp70h gene homologue of the New York isolate of GLRaV-3. Additional testing by double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-ELISA) using antibodies specific to GLRaV-3 (BIOREBA AG, Reinach, Switzerland) further confirmed these results in the ‘Niagara’ and two of the ‘Concord’ isolates. GLRaV-3 has previously been reported in labrusca cvs. Concord and Niagara in western New York (4) and Canada (1), but to our knowledge, this is the first report of GLRaV-3 in American grapevine species in the Pacific Northwest. Because wine and juice grapes are widely grown in proximity to each other in Washington State and grape mealybug (Pseudococcus maritimus), the putative vector of GLRaV-3, is present in the state vineyards, further studies will focus on the role of American grapevine species in the epidemiology of GLD. Carbon nanotube (CNT) wires are light-weight and robust alternatives to conventional metal conductors. The weight savings, increased flexure tolerance, and corrosion resistance of CNT conductors make them a viable solution for a variety of space, defense, and power transmission applications. An individual CNT has orders of magnitude greater electrical conductivity than conventional metal conductors, but this has not been realized in bulk CNT networks. Recently, the use of chemical dopants has resulted in bulk CNT wire conductivities approaching 10 MS/m. As the electrical conductivity of CNT wires continues to approach that of conventional metals, deployment of these CNT conductors will require an understanding of how these CNT conductors and chemical dopants behave during practical operation. In the present work, commercially scaled CNT wires are physically densified through radial drawing dies and chemically doped with KAuBr4 resulting in an improvement in electrical conductivity to greater than 1 MS/m, a 6x improvement compared to the as-received CNT wire. The current density at failure of CNT wires increases with KAuBr4 doping and densification by 67% to 35 MA/m2. The electrical performance retention is determined by applying increasing current densities with intermittent rest steps and low current I-V sweeps. The low current I-V sweeps allow for changes in electrical conductivity due to permanent material degradation caused by previous high current density exposure to be determined. The instantaneous electrical conductivity averaged over the last 5 seconds of each current “on” step is used to determine the temperature dependent effects on electrical conductivity caused by Joule heat during high current application. The KAuBr4 doped and densified samples experience no permanent change in initial electrical conductivity at current densities up to ~32 MA/m2, 4x greater than the as-received CNT wires. The enhanced electrical conductivity retention of KAuBr4 doped and densified CNT wires at high current density was further probed though an analysis of the thermal stability of these doped CNT conductors. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that minimal degradation of the KAuBr4 dopant occurs prior to thermal oxidation of the CNT materials at 400 °C. A variety of KAuBr4 doping and 400 °C thermal oxidation procedures were performed on CNT wires to understand how thermal degradation of the dopant relates to changes in the electrical conductivity and high current density stability. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy further related the changes in electrical conductivity to the elemental spatial analysis of gold and bromine in the KAuBr4-doped CNT samples before and after 400 °C thermal oxidation. This work concludes that the thermal stability of KAuBr4 results in improved electrical conductivity and stability at high current densities. Trace bromine and gold nanoparticles are maintained at temperatures below the onset of CNT degradation, thus providing residual doping until ultimate CNT wire failure. Recently chemical dopants such as I2 and IBr have also emerged as premiere dopants to improve the electrical conductivity of bulk CNT networks. These dopants will be used to further explore the effect doping procedures and the presence of excess dopant have on the electrical conductivity and high current stability of doped CNT wires. Developing a relationship between dopant thermal stability and electrical conductivity retention will allow for the development of a mechanism explaining dopant degradation at high current densities.

Background Hyperglycemia leading to increased oxidative stress is implicated in the increased risk for the development of macrovascular and microvascular complications in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Methods and Results A random subcohort of 349 participants was selected from the DCCT / EDIC (Diabetes Control and Complications Trial/Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications) cohort. This included 320 controls and 29 cardiovascular disease cases that were augmented with 98 additional known cases to yield a case cohort of 447 participants (320 controls, 127 cases). Biosamples from DCCT baseline, year 1, and closeout of DCCT , and 1 to 2 years post‐ DCCT ( EDIC years 1 and 2) were measured for markers of oxidative stress, including plasma myeloperoxidase, paraoxonase activity, urinary F 2α isoprostanes, and its metabolite, 2,3 dinor‐8 iso prostaglandin F 2α . Following adjustment for glycated hemoblobin and weighting the observations inversely proportional to the sampling selection probabilities, higher paraoxonase activity, reflective of antioxidant activity, and 2,3 dinor‐8 iso prostaglandin F 2α , an oxidative marker, were significantly associated with lower risk of cardiovascular disease (−4.5% risk for 10% higher paraoxonase, P iso prostaglandin F 2α , P =0.0092). In contrast, the oxidative markers myeloperoxidase and F 2α isoprostanes were not significantly associated with cardiovascular disease after adjustment for glycated hemoblobin. There were no significant differences between DCCT intensive and conventional treatment groups in the change in all biomarkers across time segments. Conclusions Heightened antioxidant activity (rather than diminished oxidative stress markers) is associated with lower cardiovascular disease risk in type 1 diabetes mellitus, but these biomarkers did not change over time with intensification of glycemic control. The structural response of single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) thin-films to ion irradiation has been systematically studied with increasing fluence between 5 × 1012 and 1 × 1015 (150 keV 11B+)/cm2 as a function of SWCNT diameter distribution. SEM analysis reveals that the SWCNT morphology remains intact after radiation exposure. The optical absorbance intensity decreases with increasing fluence, and near complete suppression is observed at approximately 2.5 × 1014 (11B+)/cm2, resulting in an equivalent reduction in signal intensity for resonant Raman spectroscopy. Changes observed in the optical response with increasing fluence demonstrate that defective SWCNTs behave similarly to other strongly doped or physically shortened SWCNTs. The Raman D/G′ increases with fluence for all samples, yet the magnitude of increase is strongly dependent on the SWCNT diameter distribution. The diameter dependence stems from differences in the SWCNT mass per unit length, which is incorporated into an inter-vacancy length (Lv) model that describes the radiation-induced changes. Ultimately, all SWCNT data converge to show an equivalent change in D/G′ at a corresponding Lv, even though the fluence required to achieve a particular Lv varies with SWCNT diameter. Thus, the radiation-induced changes in SWCNTs are intrinsically linked to their diameter, representing a fundamental property unique to this class of nanomaterials.

In opening this special edition of National Identities we will introduce the papers herein, which take Scottish devolution as their starting point for reflecting on Scottish national identity. Before so doing, we contextualize these analyses by giving a background to devolution and to studies of Scottish national identity in general. We lay out some of the approaches taken thus far and, in particular, raise points for further debate, which authors in this issue will take further.

In a cross-sectional retrospective study, we examined the prevalence of significant opposite hip bone mineral density difference among white and black women. Left–right hip bone mineral density difference was a common finding in both races, raising the possibility that osteoporosis can be missed if only one hip is imaged. We examined the prevalence of significant left–right hip bone mineral density (BMD) difference among black and white female subjects and its implications on the diagnosis of osteoporosis. This was a retrospective review of dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) data in black and white subjects age 50 years and older. One thousand four hundred seventy-seven scans obtained using a GE Lunar Prodigy scanner in dual hip mode were analyzed (24% black, 76% white). Significant left–right hip BMD difference was considered present when the subregion least significant change (LSC) was exceeded. Its prevalence was determined, along with consequences on the diagnosis of osteoporosis. Significant differences in BMD were common in both races; the LSC was exceeded in 47% of the patients at the total hip, 37% at the femoral neck, and 53% at the trochanter. Diagnostic agreement was lower when the LSC was exceeded than when it was not. The LSC was exceeded in a statistically significant number of black and white patients with normal or osteopenic spines and unilateral hip osteoporosis. Significant left–right hip BMD difference is a common finding among black and white women and can result in osteoporosis being missed if only one hip is imaged.

Implementation of multicenter and/or longitudinal studies requires an effective quality assurance program to identify trends, data inconsistencies and process variability of results over time. The Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) and the follow-up Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC) study represent over 30 years of data collection among a cohort of participants across 27 clinical centers. The quality assurance plan is overseen by the Data Coordinating Center and is implemented across the clinical centers and central reading units. Each central unit incorporates specific DCCT/EDIC quality monitoring activities into their routine quality assurance plan. The results are reviewed by a data quality assurance committee whose function is to identify variances in quality that may impact study results from the central units as well as within and across clinical centers, and to recommend implementation of corrective procedures when necessary. Over the 30-year period, changes to the methods, equipment, or clinical procedures have been required to keep procedures current and ensure continued collection of scientifically valid and clinically relevant results. Pilot testing to compare historic processes with contemporary alternatives is performed and comparability is validated prior to incorporation of new procedures into the study. Details of the quality assurance plan across and within the clinical and central reading units are described, and quality outcomes for core measures analyzed by the central reading units (e.g. biochemical samples, fundus photographs, ECGs) are presented.

A process to fabricate carbon nanotube (CNT) wires with diameters greater than 1 cm and continuous current carrying capability exceeding 20 A is demonstrated. Wires larger than 5 mm are formed using a multi-step radial densification process that begins with a densified CNT wire core followed by successive wrapping of additional CNT material to increase the wire size. This process allows for a wide range of wire diameters to be fabricated, with and without potassium tetrabromoaurate (KAuBr4) chemical doping, and the resulting electrical and thermal properties to be characterized. Electrical measurements are performed with on/off current steps to obtain the maximum current before reaching a peak CNT wire temperature of 100 °C and before failure, yielding values of instantaneous currents in excess of 45 A for KAuBr4 doped CNT wires with a diameter of 6 mm achieved prior to failure. Refractive error (RE) is a complex, multifactorial disorder characterized by a mismatch between the optical power of the eye and its axial length that causes object images to be focused off the retina. The two major subtypes of RE are myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness), which represent opposite ends of the distribution of the quantitative measure of spherical refraction. We performed a fixed effects meta-analysis of genome-wide association results of myopia and hyperopia from 9 studies of European-derived populations: AREDS, KORA, FES, OGP-Talana, MESA, RSI, RSII, RSIII and ERF. One genome-wide significant region was observed for myopia, corresponding to a previously identified myopia locus on 8q12 (p = 1.25×10-8), which has been reported by Kiefer et al. as significantly associated with myopia age at onset and Verhoeven et al. as significantly associated to mean spherical-equivalent (MSE) refractive error. We observed two genome-wide significant associations with hyperopia. These regions overlapped with loci on 15q14 (minimum p value = 9.11×10-11) and 8q12 (minimum p value 1.82×10-11) previously reported for MSE and myopia age at onset. We also used an intermarker linkage- disequilibrium-based method for calculating the effective number of tests in targeted regional replication analyses. We analyzed myopia (which represents the closest phenotype in our data to the one used by Kiefer et al.) and showed replication of 10 additional loci associated with myopia previously reported by Kiefer et al. This is the first replication of these loci using myopia as the trait under analysis. "Replication-level" association was also seen between hyperopia and 12 of Kiefer et al.'s published loci. For the loci that show evidence of association to both myopia and hyperopia, the estimated effect of the risk alleles were in opposite directions for the two traits. This suggests that these loci are important contributors to variation of refractive error across the distribution.

We use a logit adoption model with data on 941 U.S. corn producers from the 1996 Agricultural Resource Management Study to analyze the influence of land tenure on the adoption of conservation practices. We extend previous analyses by distinguishing renters according to lease type and by distinguishing practices according to the timing of costs and returns. We find that cash-renters are less likely than owner-operators to use conservation tillage, but share-renters are not. Both cash-renters and share-renters are less likely than owner-operators to adopt practices that provide benefits only over the longer term (grassed waterways, stripcropping, and contour farming). Describes the early stages of university executive education, including MBA and non‐degree executive development programmes, and gives examples of early in‐house executive education. Examines the current university EMBA and speciality programmes and today’s in‐house facilities. Sets out advantages and disadvantages of the two approaches, and considers a customized approach ‐ a movement towards jointly designed executive education, combining university and in‐house features. Looks at the future of executive education, the two most important trends being the effects of global competition and evolving corporate needs, and discusses future executive programmes ‐ university, in‐house and cutomized. Highlights the implications of recent developments in technology, and suggests that the underlying theme for tomorrow’s executive education is the likelihood of more company involvement.

Human leukaemic HL-60 cells are widely used for studying interactions involving adhesion molecules [e.g. P-selectin and PSGL-1 (P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1)] since their rolling behaviour has been shown to mimic the dynamics of leucocyte rolling in vitro. HL-60 cells are neutrophilic promyelocytes that can undergo granulocytic differentiation upon exposure to compounds such as DMSO (dimethylsulfoxide). Using a parallel plate flow chamber functionalized with recombinant P-selectin–Fc chimaera, undifferentiated and DMSO-induced (48, 72 and 96 h) HL-60 cells were assayed for rolling behaviour. We found that depending on P-selectin incubation concentration, undifferentiated cells incurred up to a 6-fold increase in rolling velocity while subjected to an approximately 10-fold increase in biologically relevant shear stress. HL-60 cells exposed to DMSO for up to 72 h incurred up to a 3-fold increase in rolling velocity over the same shear stress range. Significantly, cells exposed for up to 96 h incurred up to a 9-fold decrease in rolling velocity, compared with undifferentiated HL-60 cells. Although cell surface and nuclear morphological changes were evident upon exposure to DMSO, flow cytometric analysis revealed that PSGL-1 expression was unchanged, irrespective of treatment duration. The results suggest that DMSO-treated HL-60 cells may be problematic as a substitute for neutrophils for trafficking studies during advanced stages of the LAC (leucocyte adhesion cascade). We suggest that remodelling of the cell surface during differentiation may affect rolling behaviour and that DMSO-treated HL-60 cells would behave differently from the normal leucocytes during inflammatory response in vivo.

Since the mid-1960s there has been a significant increase in the number of public interest groups in Canada and the United States. Representing environmental, social and consumer interests, these groups serve as focal points through which consumer, business and government sectors interact. In the area of housing and community planning, public interest groups have been able to influence housing and planning policy to reflect the interests of housing consumers. Never, however, has a senior's advocacy group arisen with the purpose of attempting to influence the public and private sectors in the field of mortgage finance. Canadians for Home Equity Conversion (CHEC) is a grassroots advocacy group that represents exactly this cause. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the evolution of CHEC in order to broaden our understanding of the role of consumer interest groups in new product development. Home equity conversion will be discussed in the context of consumer, business and government interaction, and will serve as a case study that illustrates the public interest movement.

Aid agencies spend large sums on short-term famine relief and are typically unwilling to provide project support for long periods. Yet in at least one case in the Sahel it would be cheaper to provide a long-term subsidy for expert management at an existing irrigation project than to provide periodic famine relief. The project does not fare well using standard cost-benefit techniques but if the opportunity cost of domestic production is measured by the cost of periodic famine relief, continned support is justified.

OBJECTIVE To examine the persistence of the original treatment effects 10 years after the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) in the follow-up Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC) study. In the DCCT, intensive therapy aimed at near-normal glycemia reduced the risk of microvascular complications of type 1 diabetes mellitus compared with conventional therapy. METHODS Retinopathy was evaluated by fundus photography in 1211 subjects at EDIC year 10. Further 3-step progression on the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study scale from DCCT closeout was the primary outcome. RESULTS After 10 years of EDIC follow-up, there was no significant difference in mean glycated hemoglobin levels (8.07% vs 7.98%) between the original treatment groups. Nevertheless, compared with the former conventional treatment group, the former intensive group had significantly lower incidences from DCCT close of further retinopathy progression and proliferative retinopathy or worse (hazard reductions, 53%-56%; P < .001). The risk (hazard) reductions at 10 years of EDIC were attenuated compared with the 70% to 71% over the first 4 years of EDIC (P < .001). The persistent beneficial effects of former intensive therapy were largely explained by the difference in glycated hemoglobin levels during DCCT. CONCLUSION The persistent difference in diabetic retinopathy between former intensive and conventional therapy ("metabolic memory") continues for at least 10 years but may be waning. Since 2002 our transplant program has utilized a steroid free, cyclosporine (CSA)- and rapamycin (RAPA)-based maintenance immunosuppression regimen. In cases where it has been desirable to avoid the potential nephrotoxicity with this regimen we have used mycophenolic acid (MPA) as our "switch" drug of choice. Both mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) (Roche Inc., Nutley, NJ, USA) and enteric-coated MPA (ECM) (Novartis, East Hanover, NJ, USA) have been used. In this study, we retrospectively compared the tolerability of the two formulations of MPA. Thus we compared 103 recipients switched to RAPA/MMF (RMM group) to 114 switched to RAPA/ECM (REC group). There was a significantly higher incidence of patients requiring dose changes and drug discontinuation in the RMM group, as well as an increased frequency of dose changes. There were significantly more acute rejection episodes and kidney losses in the dose adjustment vs. no dose adjustment patients. However, when comparing the incidence of acute rejection and kidney loss between the RMM and REC groups, there was no significant difference. We conclude that in this cohort of recipients, the ECM formulation of MPA was better tolerated than the MMF formulation, resulting in fewer patients requiring dose adjustments or drug discontinuation.

Genetic engineering refers to the genetic modification of organisms by recombinant DNA techniques. By a precise alteration of a plant’s traits, genetic engineering facilitates the development of characteristics not possible through traditional plant breeding techniques. The genetic modifications considered in this chapter include herbicide tolerance and insect resistance.

There is increasing recognition that farmers face constraints on their farming decisions depending on the their resources, stage in life, and lifestyle choices. These factors are captured in a new farm typology developed by the Economic Research Service. The farm typology’s definition of small and large farms is used to test the commonly stated hypothesis that small farmers practice better land husbandry than do large farmers. The adoption of eleven different soil and nttfrient management practices used by U.S. corn producers is analyzed with a bivariate logit model for each practice. The farm typology is found to be significantly associated with two of the practices—rotation with legumes and conservation tillage. In the 20th Annual Family Farm Report to Congress (Sommer et al. 1998) on the characteristics of U.S. farms, the Economic Research Service (ERS) reported on a new farm typology that delineates five types of small family farms, large family farms, and nonfamily farms. This typology grew out of the recognition that farmers are not a monolithic group; they face different constraints on their farming decisions depending on the resources available to them, their stage in life and their lifestyle choices (e.g. full-time or part-time farmers). In addition, some policies maybe more appropriate or beneficial for some types of farmers than for others. The typology will be increasingly used to understand in what ways production decisions vary across farmers and how policy instruments might affect different groups of farmers, especially small family farmers, This paper takes as a starting point the hypothesis that farmers’ soil and nutrient management practices differ by farm type, as defined by the ERS typology. During the 1981-1982 academic year a study was undertaken to assess medical students' opinions on various occupational/personal/demographic issues. Results demonstrated that a typical USD School of Medicine student was family medicine oriented, wanted to enter private practice, and viewed his/her calling into medicine as primarily altruistic in nature.

Grapevine leafroll disease (GLD) has been recognized as one of the major constraints to the production of wine grapes in Washington State. At least nine distinct Grapevine leafroll-associated viruses (GLRaV-1 to -9) have been detected in grapevines showing GLD symptoms in grape-growing areas of several countries. Previous studies documented the presence of GLRaV-1, -2, and -3 in Washington State (3). We initiated a program to test grapevine cultivars with GLD symptoms for the occurrence of the other GLRaVs. Leaf samples were collected from individual grapevines of red-berried grapevine cultivars showing typical GLD symptoms and tested by single-tube reverse transcription (RT)-PCR. Of nearly 300 samples from 13 cultivars in 19 vineyards, 14 samples from 5 cultivars (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Mourvedre, and Lagrein) in different vineyards tested positive for GLRaV-9 using primers LR9 F/F (5′-CGG CAT AAG AAA AGA TGG CAC-3′) and LR9 R/R (5′-TCA TTC ACC ACT GCT TGA AC-3′), specific for the HSP-70h gene of GLRaV-9 (1). To confirm the identity of the RT-PCR products, the 393-bp amplicons obtained from each of these five cultivars were cloned individually into the pCR2.1 plasmid (Invitrogen Corp., Carlsbad, CA). Two independent clones per amplicon were sequenced from both orientations. Pairwise comparisons of these sequences (GenBank Accession Nos. EF101737, EF101738, EF101739, EF101740, and EU252530) with corresponding sequences of other GLRaVs in GenBank showed 94 to 100 and 96 to 100% identity at the nucleotide and amino acid level, respectively, with the sequence of HSP-70h gene of GLRaV-9 (GenBank Accession No. AY297819). Antiserum specific to GLRaV-9 was not accessible, therefore, an additional 540-nucleotide fragment specific to the coat protein (CP) gene of GLRaV-9 was amplified from cv. Lagrein using primers LR9-CP-F (5′ TAC CGT CGA CAC TTT CGA AGC ACT 3′) and LR9-CP-R (5′ TGA GGC GTC GTA ACC GAA CAA TCT 3′). PCR amplified fragments were cloned and sequenced. A comparison of this sequence (GenBank Accession No. EU251512) with corresponding nucleotide sequences of other GLRaVs in GenBank showed 96% identity with CP of GLRaV-9 (GenBank Accession No. AY297819), further confirming the presence of GLRaV-9. Previously, GLRaV-9 was reported in grapevines in California (1), Tunisia (2), and Western Australia (4). To our knowledge, our results are the first evidence for the occurrence of GLRaV-9 in Washington State vineyards. Results from our study and previous reports (1,2,4) indicate the wide distribution of GLRaV-9 in several Vitis vinifera cultivars.
