In nanomechanical mass spectrometry, sensing devices are commonly placed in the vacuum environment and a stream of analytes is directed toward the sensor surface for measurement. Beam structures, such as double-clamped nanobeams and nanocantilevers, are commonly used due to their low inertial mass and the simplicity of the analytical models for mass extraction. The drawback of such structures is their low capture areas, compromising the capture efficiency and throughput of this technique. Bi-axisymmetric resonators, such as ultrathin square or circular membranes, arise as an optimal geometry to maximize capture efficiency while minimizing the device inertial mass. However, these structures present degenerate mechanical modes, whose frequency perturbations upon analyte adsorption are not well described by commonly used models. Furthermore, prior knowledge of the vibration mode shapes of the sensor is crucial for the correct calculation of the analyte’s mass, and the mode shape of degenerate modes may change significantly after every adsorption event. In this work, we present an accurate analytical theory to describe the effect of mass adsorption on the degenerate modes of square membrane resonators and propose two different methods based on the new theory to update the vibration mode shapes after every adsorption event. Nanomechanical mass spectrometry allows characterization of analytes with broad mass range, from small proteins to bacterial cells, and with unprecedented mass sensitivity. In this work, we show a novel multifrequency nanomechanical mass spectrometer prototype designed for focusing, guiding and soft-landing of nanoparticles and viral particles on a nanomechanical resonator surface placed in vacuum. The system is compatible with optomechanical disk resonators, with an integrated optomechanical transduction method, and with the laser beam deflection technique for the measurement of the vibrations of microcantilever resonators. The prototype allows the in-vacuum alignment of resonators thanks to a dedicated visualization system. Finally, in this work, we have demonstrated the detection of gold nanoparticles, polystyrene nanoparticles and phage G viruses with optomechanical disks and microcantilever resonators.

How bacteria are able to maintain their size remains an open question. Techniques that can measure the biomass (dry mass) of single cells with high precision and high-throughput are demanded to elucidate this question. Here, we present a technological approach that combines the transport, guiding and focusing of individual bacteria from solution to the surface of an ultrathin silicon nitride membrane resonator in vacuum. The resonance frequencies of the membrane undergo abrupt variations at the instants where single cells land on the membrane surface. The resonator design displays a quasi-symmetric rectangular shape with an extraordinary capture area of 0.14 mm2, while maintaining a high mass resolution of 0.7 fg (1 fg = 10−15 g) to precisely resolve the dry mass of single cells. The small rectangularity of the membrane provides unprecedented frequency density of vibration modes that enables to retrieve the mass of individual cells with high accuracy by specially developed inverse problem theory. We apply this approach for profiling the dry mass distribution in Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli cells. The technique allows the determination of the dry mass of single bacterial cells with an accuracy of about 1% at an unparalleled throughput of 20 cells/min. Finally, we revisit Koch & Schaechter model developed during 60 s to assess the intrinsic sources of stochasticity that originate cell size heterogeneity in steady-state populations. International audience; BabyIAXO is a helioscope under construction to search for an emission of the axion particle from the Sun. At the same time it serves as an intermediate stage towards the International Axion Observatory (IAXO). An integral component of this experiment is a low background X-ray detector with a high efficiency in the 1–10 keV energy range. Micromegas detectors are considered as baseline technology for BabyIAXO thanks to the relatively high efficiency and very low background level. Other detector technologies developed to reach better energy resolution while maintaining high efficiency and low background level are also under study. In this paper, we review the BabyIAXO design and present the analysis of data taken with the prototype of an IAXO Micromegas detector. A background level of 8.8×10−7counts keV−1cm−2s−1 was reached.

et al., We present results of the Relic Axion Dark-Matter Exploratory Setup (RADES), a detector which is part of the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST), searching for axion dark matter in the 34.67 μeV mass range. A radio frequency cavity consisting of 5 sub-cavities coupled by inductive irises took physics data inside the CAST dipole magnet for the first time using this filter-like haloscope geometry. An exclusion limit with a 95% credibility level on the axion-photon coupling constant of gaγ ≳ 4 × 10−13 GeV−1 over a mass range of 34.6738 μeV < ma < 34.6771 μeV is set. This constitutes a significant improvement over the current strongest limit set by CAST at this mass and is at the same time one of the most sensitive direct searches for an axion dark matter candidate above the mass of 25 μeV. We present a novel trainable approach to distinguish neutrons from gammas using a particle detector . Traditionally, Pulse Shape Discrimination (PSD) methods for this problem utilize an ad-hoc computation of tail signal energy to perform the detection. Our first contribution is a rigorous analysis of the performance of this existing approach on gold standard Time of Flight (TOF) data. While this approach performs well for high energy pulses, its accuracy drops dramatically as the pulse energy decreases. Our second contribution is a novel data driven classifier that is trained from two readily available sources: one that emits gamma particles (Cs-137), and another that emits a mixture of gamma and neutron particles (Cf-252). We test our approach using TOF experiments and show a marked improvement in accuracy over the traditional method for low false positive rates and low energies.

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is a robotic aircraft that can fly with either a remote input from a ground-based operator, or autonomously without human intervention based on pre-programmed flight plans (How et al., 2004). UAVs offer advantages over conventional manned vehicles in many applications because they can be used in situations otherwise too dangerous for manned vehicles and without being weighed down by the systems required by a pilot. UAVs are currently receiving much attention in research because they can be used in a wide variety of fields, both civil and military, such as reconnaissance, geophysical survey, environmental and meteorological monitoring, aerial photography, and search-and-rescue tasks. Most of these missions are usually carried out in threatened environments, and then it is very important to fly along a route which keeps the UAV away from known threats. Detection radars are one of the main threats for an UAV, but there are others that should also be avoided, such as fires, electric storms, radio shadowing zones, no flight zones, and so on. One of the main goals in many UAV’s projects has been to establish the route that maximizes the likelihood of successful mission completion taking into account all known information about technological constraints, obstacles and threat zones on a static environment (Richards & How, 2002). Some papers that investigate path planning for UAVs presume that the location of the threats and their presence are deterministically known at planning-time, and interpret a path which avoids possible threat regions as an optimal path (Borto, 2000). However more recent projects are examining the possibilities of UAVs as realistic autonomous agents working on dynamic environments where threat zones called pop-up are present (Zengin & Dogan, 2004). The true presence of these types of zones is only known at flying-time, but the location and knowledge about the probability of appearance can be known at planning-time. In this chapter we will present an approach to trajectory optimization for UAV in presence of obstacles, waypoints, and risk zones. The approach has been implemented on SPASAS (System for Planning And Simulation of Aerial Strategy), an integrated system for definition of flight scenarios, flight planning, simulation and graphic representation of the results developed at Complutense University of Madrid. The system uses two alternative methods for trajectory generation: mixed integer linear programming (MILP) and a modification of the A* algorithm, depending on the characteristics of the scenario between two waypoints.

Over the last decades, nanomechanical sensors have received significant attention from the scientific community, as they find plenty of applications in many different research fields, ranging from fundamental physics to clinical diagnosis. Regarding biological applications, nanomechanical sensors have been used for characterizing biological entities, for detecting their presence, and for characterizing the forces and motion associated with fundamental biological processes, among many others. Thanks to the continuous advancement of micro- and nano-fabrication techniques, nanomechanical sensors have rapidly evolved towards more sensitive devices. At the same time, researchers have extensively worked on the development of theoretical models that enable one to access more, and more precise, information about the biological entities and/or biological processes of interest. This paper reviews the main theoretical models applied in this field. We first focus on the static mode, and then continue on to the dynamic one. Then, we center the attention on the theoretical models used when nanomechanical sensors are applied in liquids, the natural environment of biology. Theory is essential to properly unravel the nanomechanical sensors signals, as well as to optimize their designs. Axions are a natural consequence of the Peccei-Quinn mechanism, the most compelling solution to the strong-CP problem. Similar axion-like particles (ALPs) also appear in a number of possible extensions of the Standard Model, notably in string theories. Both axions and ALPs are very well motivated candidates for Dark Matter, and in addition, they would be copiously produced at the sun's core. A relevant effort during the last decade has been the CAST experiment at CERN, the most sensitive axion helioscope to-date. The International Axion Observatory (IAXO) is a large-scale 4th generation helioscope. As its primary physics goal, IAXO will look for solar axions or ALPs with a signal to background ratio of about 5 orders of magnitude higher than CAST. Recently the IAXO collaboration has proposed and intermediate experimental stage, BabyIAXO, conceived to test all IAXO subsystems (magnet, optics, detectors and sun-tracking systems) at a relevant scale for the final system and thus serve as pathfinder for IAXO but at the same time as a fully-fledged helioscope with record and relevant physics reach in itself with potential for discovery. In this paper, we present novel methods for automated pulse shape discrimination. The classifiers are trained using simple radionuclide sources and do not require ground truth labeling. We test their performance using labels derived from time of flight experiments and present the results in terms of energy-dependent Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves. In addition, we also train and test standard pulse shape discrimination methods on the same data for comparison. We find multiple methods that can yield similar false neutron and true neutron rates at 24 keVee as tail-to-total or Gatti’s optimal linear filter yield at 54 keVee .

A Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) based machine learning algorithm has been applied to the problem of gamma/neutron pulse shape discrimination (PSD). The algorithm has been successfully implemented on a standard PC as well as a field programmable gate array (FPGA). Here we describe the GMM classifier and its implementation on these two different types of hardware. We compare the performance of the algorithm on these two platforms against each other, along with other standard techniques applied in PSD. Our results show that the FPGA-based GMM classifier outperforms the standard PSD techniques in terms of classification accuracy at low particle energy and executes more quickly than its CPU-based counterpart.

The administration of President Rodrigo R. Duterte has fulfilled one of their campaign promises, which is to reduce production cost and increase farmers’ income. Thus, an amount of Two Billion Pesos (P 2,000,000,000.00) was provided in the budget of NIA under General Appropriations Act (GAA) of 2017 or RA 10,924 for the implementation of the free Irrigation Service Fee (ISF) program that commenced on the first cropping season of the year 2017. Through a qualitative research design, this study was able to describe the implication of the implementation of free ISF program to the Federation of Irrigators Association of NIA-UPRIIS, Division I. The implementation of the program brought sudden changes in the performance of the FIAs when it came to their operation and maintenance responsibilities. They became more aware of their responsibilities in the irrigation system. Assistance and support are still being given to them by NIA. However, when it comes to funds, they have to find ways to cover for their own expenses in canal clearing activities and other expenses related to their operation and maintenance responsibilities. Therefore, they agreed to collect seasonal dues from their members. The most visible implications of the implementation of the free ISF program were the reduction of production cost of the farmers and the associations were able to have better understanding of the importance of their role in sustaining and developing the irrigation system. By working hand in hand, the FIAs and NIA can manage to sustain the operations and maintenance of the irrigation system.

Time of flight experiments are the gold standard method for generating labeled training and testing data for the neutron/gamma pulse shape discrimination problem. As the popularity of supervised classification methods increases in this field, there will also be increasing reliance on time of flight data for algorithm development and evaluation. However, time of flight experiments are subject to various sources of contamination that lead to neutron and gamma pulses being mislabeled. Such labeling errors have a detrimental effect on classification algorithm training and testing, and should therefore be minimized. This paper presents a method for identifying minimally contaminated data sets from time of flight experiments and estimating the residual contamination rate. This method leverages statistical models describing neutron and gamma travel time distributions and is easily implemented using existing statistical software. The method produces a set of optimal intervals that balance the trade-off between interval size and nuisance particle contamination, and its use is demonstrated on a time of flight data set for Cf-252. The particular properties of the optimal intervals for the demonstration data are explored in detail.

In the last two decades, nano-mechanical resonators have risen as highly promising devices for mass sensing due to their ultrahigh sensitivity. They can be used to measure the mass and stiffness of single particles like small pollution particles, viruses, bacteria, or even proteins. These capabilities of the nano-mechanical resonators have allowed the birth of a new type of mass spectrometry with no need of fragmentation or ionization of the sample and therefore ideal to measure big masses, where conventional mass spectrometers have important problems. The shape and modes of vibration of a nano-mechanical resonator can be very different and the advantages and drawbacks of one respect to another is still a hot topic. A unified theoretical framework to describe the effect of particle adsorption on a mechanical resonator is fundamental but still lacks in the literature. In this work, we present such a framework and examine the particular case of a rod-like particle adsorbed on a cantilever beam for flexural and torsional vibrations as well as on a disk resonator for radial breathing vibrations and compare the results with finite element simulations, This work was supported by the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program under Grant Agreement No. 731868—VIRUSCAN. Low-frequency vibration modes of biological particles, such as proteins, viruses and bacteria, involve coherent collective vibrations at frequencies in the terahertz and gigahertz domains. These vibration modes carry information on their structure and mechanical properties, which are good indicators of their biological state. In this work, we harnessed a particular regime in the physics of coupled mechanical resonators to directly measure these low-frequency mechanical resonances of a single bacterium. We deposit the bacterium on the surface of an ultrahigh frequency optomechanical disk resonator in ambient conditions. The vibration modes of the disk and bacterium hybridize when their associated frequencies are similar. We developed a general theoretical framework to describe this coupling, which allows us to retrieve the eigenfrequencies and mechanical loss of the bacterium low-frequency vibration modes (quality factor). Additionally, we analysed the effect of hydration on these vibrational modes. We describe an optical transduction mechanism to measure the flexural mode vibrations of vertically aligned nanowires on a flat substrate with high sensitivity, linearity, and ease of implementation. We demonstrate that the light reflected from the substrate when a laser beam strikes it parallel to the nanowires is modulated proportionally to their vibration, so that measuring such modulation provides a highly efficient resonance readout. This mechanism is applicable to single nanowires or arrays without specific requirements regarding their geometry or array pattern, and no fabrication process besides the nanowire generation is required. We show how to optimize the performance of this mechanism by characterizing the split flexural modes of vertical silicon nanowires in their full dynamic range and up to the fifth mode order. Fission fragment angular distributions can provide an important constraint on fission theory, improving predictive fission codes, and are a prerequisite for a precise ratio cross section measurement. Available anisotropy data is sparse, especially at neutron energies above 5 MeV. For the first time, a three-dimensional tracking detector is employed to study fragment emission angles and provide a direct measurement of angular anisotropy. The Neutron Induced Fission Fragment Tracking Experiment (NIFFTE) collaboration has deployed the fission time projection chamber (fissionTPC) to measure nuclear data with unprecedented precision. The fission fragment anisotropy of $^{235}$U has been measured over a wide range of incident neutron energies from 180 keV to 200 MeV; a careful study of the systematic uncertainties complement the data.

We report on a first measurement with a sensitive opto-mechanical force sensor designed for the direct detection of coupling of real chameleons to matter. These dark energy candidates could be produced in the Sun and stream unimpeded to Earth. The KWISP detector installed on the CAST axion search experiment at CERN looks for tiny displacements of a thin membrane caused by the mechanical effect of solar chameleons. The displacements are detected by a Michelson interferometer with a homodyne readout scheme. The sensor benefits from the focusing action of the ABRIXAS X-ray telescope installed at CAST, which increases the chameleon flux on the membrane. A mechanical chopper placed between the telescope output and the detector modulates the incoming chameleon stream. We present the results of the solar chameleon measurements taken at CAST in July 2017, setting an upper bound on the force acting on the membrane of $80$~pN at 95\% confidence level. The detector is sensitive for direct coupling to matter $10^4 \leq\beta_m \leq 10^8$, where the coupling to photons is locally bound to $\beta_\gamma \leq 10^{11}$., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

Çetin, Serkant Ali (Dogus Author) -- Arık, Metin (Dogus Author) -- Yıldız, Süleyman Cenk (Dogus Author) Although they have not yet been detected, axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) continue to maintain the interest (even increasingly so) of the rare-event searches community as viable candidates for the Dark Matter of the Universe but also as a solution for several other puzzles of astrophysics. Their property of coupling to photons has inspired different experimental methods for their detection, one of which is the helioscope technique. The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) is the most sensitive helioscope built up to date and has recently published part of the latest data taken with the magnet bores gradually filled with He-3, probing the mass range up to 1.17 eV. The International AXion Observatory (IAXO) is being proposed as a facility where different axion studies can be performed, with the primary goal to study axions coming from the Sun. Designed to maximize sensitivity, it will improve the levels reached by CAST by almost 5 orders of magnitude in signal detection, that is more than one order of magnitude in terms of gay. Here we will summarize the most important aspects of the helioscopes, and focus mainly on IAXO, based on the recent papers [1, 2].

International audience; More than 80 years after the postulation of dark matter, its nature remains one of the fundamental questions in cosmology. Axions are currently one of the leading candidates for the hypothetical, non-baryonic dark matter that is expected to account for about 25% of the energy density of the Universe. Especially in the light of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN slowly closing in on Weakly-Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) searches, axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) provide a viable alternative approach to solving the dark matter problem. The fact that makes them particularly appealing is that they were initially introduced to solve a long-standing problem in quantum chromodynamics and the Standard Model of particle physics.Helioscopes are a type of axion experiment searching for axions produced in the core of the Sun via the Primakoff effect. The International Axion Observatory (IAXO) is a next generation axion helioscope aiming at a sensitivity to the axion-photon coupling of 1 − 1.5 orders of magnitude beyond the current most sensitive axion helioscope, which is the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST). IAXO will be able to challenge the stringent bounds from supernova SN1987A and test the axion interpretation of anomalous white-dwarf cooling. Beyond standard axions, this new experiment will also be able to search for a large variety of axion-like particles and other novel excitations at the low-energy frontier of elementary particle physics. BabyIAXO is proposed as an intermediate-scale experiment increasing the sensitivity to axion-photon couplings down to a few 10$^{−11}$ GeV$^{−1}$ and thus delivering significant physics results while demonstrating the feasibility of the full-scale IAXO experiment. Here we introduce the IAXO and BabyIAXO experiments, report on the current status of both and outline the expected IAXO science reach.

The normalized $^{238}$U(n,f)/$^{235}$U(n,f) cross section ratio has been measured using the NIFFTE fission Time Projection Chamber from the reaction threshold to $30$~MeV. The fissionTPC is a two-volume MICROMEGAS time projection chamber that allows for full three-dimensional reconstruction of fission-fragment ionization profiles from neutron-induced fission. The measurement was performed at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center, where the neutron energy is determined from neutron time-of-flight. The $^{238}$U(n,f)/$^{235}$U(n,f) ratio reported here is the first cross section measurement made with the fissionTPC, and will provide new experimental data for evaluation of the $^{238}$U(n,f) cross section, an important standard used in neutron-flux measurements. Use of a development target in this work prevented the determination of an absolute normalization, to be addressed in future measurements. Instead, the measured cross section ratio has been normalized to ENDF/B-VIII.$\beta$5 at 14.5 MeV.
