Abstract This work presents the synthesis and evaluation of Pd-Ni aerogels toward the urea oxidation reaction (UOR). The incorporation of Ni led to a 0.13 V reduction in the energy required for the oxidation and reduction of PdO compared to monometallic Pd, both in alkaline medium with and without urea. Varying the Ni ratios in Pd (Pd-Ni 4:1, Pd-Ni 1:1, and Pd-Ni 1:4) led to significant changes in the electrochemical behaviour. In alkaline medium without urea, PdNi 4:1 showed the formation of NiOOH at 1.35 V, which promoted oxygen diffusion on the electrode surface and increased the current density, confirming the increase in the active sites of NiOOH and NiPdOOH and enabling urea-based electrolysis at these sites. While palladium aerogels alone are ineffective for UOR, the presence of nickel plays a key role in enhancing the UOR efficiency. On the other hand, physicochemical characterisation revealed that PdNi 4:1 has a crystal size of 4.37 nm and a larger shift in the 2θ positions of the (111) and (200) planes, which favours electronic changes that were investigated by XPS. These changes affected the electrocatalytic activity, which is primarily related to electronic effects. The results of SEM and TEM studies and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm confirmed that the aerogels are highly porous and have an effective surface area and abundant active sites for reactions that allow efficient mass transfer and low diffusion resistance. TEM observations revealed interconnected nanochains indicating optimal electrocatalytic activity for both ORR and UOR due to high mass transfer. These interconnected networks are crucial for improving electrocatalytic activity in the urea oxidation reaction.

The urine/urea oxidation reaction through catalysts with a higher performance in direct urea microfluidic fuel cells (DUµFC) is a promising method for power generation due to the large amount of human and animal urine containing 2–2.5 wt% urea. This paper presents a study that used urea as fuel in a DUµFC in the presence of palladium supported by reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for power generation. Some parameters, such as urea, KOH and H2SO4 concentration and flux rate, among others, are optimized in order to carry out the evaluation of urine samples as fuel in an air-breathing microfluidic fuel cell. The results show that the Pd/rGo catalyst mixed with Nafion® in the anodic compartment is dispersed and attached to the paper fibers, generating electrical contact and giving rise to the reactions of interest. In addition, XRD analysis confirmed the successful deposition of Pd and rGo on the substrate. These electrochemical results are promising, since, despite the decrease in the general performance of the DUµFC under ideal conditions with respect to normal cells, the generation of energy from urine was demonstrated.

This systematic review presents the current state of research in the last five years on contaminants in soils, especially in leachates from solid waste landfills, with emphasis on biological remediation. In this work, the pollutants that can be treated by microorganisms and the results obtained worldwide were studied. All the data obtained were compiled, integrated, and analyzed by soil type, pollutant type, bacterial type, and the countries where these studies were carried out. This review provides reliable data on the contamination of soils worldwide, especially soils contaminated by leachate from municipal landfills. The extent of contamination, treatment objectives, site characteristics, cost, type of microorganisms to be used, and time must be considered when selecting a viable remediation strategy. The results of this study can help develop innovative and applicable methods for evaluating the overall contamination of soil with different contaminants and soil types. These findings can help develop innovative, applicable, and economically feasible methods for the sustainable management of contaminated soils, whether from landfill leachate or other soil types, to reduce or eliminate risk to the environment and human health, and to achieve greater greenery and functionality on the planet.

The aim of this work is the evaluation of a Sulfonated Poly Ether-Ether Ketone (S-PEEK) polymer modified by the addition of pure Santa Barbara Amorphous-15 (SBA-15, mesoporous silica) and SBA-15 previously impregnated with phosphotungstic acid (PWA) fillers (PWA/SBA-15) in order to prepare composite membranes as an alternative to conventional Nafion® membranes. This component is intended to be used as an electrolyte in electrochemical energy systems such as hydrogen and methanol Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) and Electrochemical Hydrogen Pumping (EHP). The common requirements for all the applications are high proton conductivity, thermomechanical stability, and fuel and oxidant impermeability. The morphology of the composite membranes was investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy- Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analysis. Water Uptake (Wup), Ion Exchange Capacity (IEC), proton conductivity, methanol permeability and other physicochemical properties were evaluated. In PEMFC tests, the S-PEEK membrane with a 10 wt.% SBA-15 loading showed the highest performance. For EHP, the inclusion of inorganic materials led to a back-diffusion, limiting the compression capacity. Concerning methanol permeability, the lowest methanol crossover corresponded to the composites containing 5 wt.% and 10 wt.% SBA-15.

Currently, the ethanol electro-oxidation reaction has attracted considerable attention in fuel cells because of new green ethanol synthetic methods based on biomass processes that have emerged. In this study, PtFe/C and Pt/C nanoparticles were synthesized by a chemical reduction method and tested in the ethanol electro-oxidation reaction. Furthermore, the electrocatalytic effect of the PtFe bimetallic catalyst was analyzed by in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) coupled to an electrochemical cell. X-ray diffractograms showed typical face-centered cubic structures with crystallite sizes of 3.31 and 3.94 for Pt/C and PtFe/C, respectively. TEM micrographs revealed nanoparticle sizes of 2 ± 0.4 nm and 3 ± 0.6 nm for Pt/C and PtFe/C respectively. PtFe/C exhibited a Pt90Fe10 composition by both X-ray fluorescence and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. A better electrocatalytic activity as function of concentration was obtained through the incorporation of a small amount of Fe into the Pt lattice and the presence of Fe2+/Fe3+ (observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy). According to SERS experiments, the presence of these iron species promotes the chemisorption of ethanol, the formation of formic acid as main product and renewal of the catalytic sites, resulting in current densities that were at least three fold higher than the values obtained for the Pt/C nanocatalyst.

Nowadays, hydrogen has a preponderant position among the potentially sustainable energy sources. Due to its power density, its storage is of main concern when considering a broad use in practical applications. Carbon nanotubes constitute promising candidates for the design and construction of hydrogen storage devices. This work explores the use of some procedures involving electrochemistry, aimed to bond atomic Ti on the outer surface of MWNTs. Each titanium atom has the potential of hosting two hydrogen molecules and relinquishing them by heating. Nevertheless, nanotubes are difficult to handle due to electrostatic charge and agglomeration, and in this context, two routes were tested as procedures to spread and stick nanotubes on an electrode: (1) a functionalization capable of attaching gold was tested in two forms, as either using 4 nm particles or a flat gold electrode. The fixation of Au particles was confirmed by HRTEM. (2) A simpler route that consisted on drying a CH2Cl2/nanotubes solution previously spread on a glassy carbon flat electrode. CH2Cl2 was selected as the medium and TiCl4 as the precursor for attaching atomic Ti to the nanotubes. The results revealed that hydrogen adsorption, estimated from voltamperometry, was five times higher on Ti-MWNTs than on bare nanotubes.

Recent developments in wearable and implanted devices have resulted in numerous, unprecedented capabilities that generate increasingly detailed information about a user's health or provide targeted therapy. However, options for powering such systems remain limited to conventional batteries which are large and have toxic components and as such are not suitable for close integration with the human body. This work provides an in-depth overview of biofluid-activated electrochemical energy devices, an emerging class of energy sources judiciously designed for biomedical applications. These unconventional energy devices are composed of biocompatible materials that harness the inherent chemistries of various biofluids to produce useable electrical energy. This work covers examples of such biofluid-activated energy devices in the form of biofuel cells, batteries, and supercapacitors. Advances in materials, design engineering, and biotechnology that form the basis for high-performance, biofluid-activated energy devices are discussed. Innovations in hybrid manufacturing and heterogeneous integration of device components to maximize power output are also included. Environmental and energy concerns surrounding the use of fossil fuels are driving an increasingly rapid transition to sustainable and eco‐responsible processes. Electrochemical processes can provide the necessary sustainability and economic roadmap for storing intermittent and renewable electricity by synthesizing, in cogeneration electrolyzers, energy carriers and/or synthetic chemicals (hydrogen, ammonia, etc.) via flagship reduction reactions (hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), etc.). To balance the electrochemical process, these cathodic processes have long been coupled to the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which ultimately consumes almost 90% of the energy input. Recent years have witnessed an overwhelming development of anode scenarios based on biomass substrates, because OER cannot be driven below a certain potential threshold, while organics are thermodynamically more favorable. Therefore, paired electrolysis, which refers to cases where electrochemical oxidation and reduction are desired, embraces the electrocatalysis community for the electrolytic production of hydrogen, ammonia, etc. (cathode side), in parallel with value‐added chemicals (anode side), all with a modest electricity input. The trade‐off is selectivity at relevant current densities. This review discusses, the progress, challenges, and potential of biomass‐fueled paired electrosynthesis of valuable chemicals and fuels. As an efficient alternative for harnessing the energy from human's biofluid, a wearable energy harvesting-storage hybrid supercapacitor-biofuel cell (SC-BFC) microfluidic system is established with one multifunctional electrode. The electrode integrates metal-organic framework (MOF) derived carbon nanoarrays with embedded Au, Co nanoparticles on a flexible substrate, and is used for the symmetric supercapacitor as well as the enzyme nanocarriers of the biofuel cell. The electrochemical performance of the proposed electrode is evaluated, and the corresponding working mechanism is studied in depth according to the cyclic voltammetry and density functional theory calculation. The multiplexed microfluidic system is designed to pump and store natural sweat to maintain the continuous biofuel supply in the hybrid SC-BFC system. The biofuel cell module harvests electricity from lactate in sweat, and the symmetric supercapacitor module accommodates the bioelectricity for subsequent utilization. A numerical model is developed to validate the normal operation in poor and rich sweat under variable situations for the microfluidic system. One single SC-BFC unit can be self-charged to ≈0.8 V with superior mechanical durability in on-body testing, as well as energy and power values of 7.2 mJ and 80.3 µW, respectively. The development of productive catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a major challenge requiring significant progress in both mechanism and material design. Conventionally, the thermodynamic barrier of lattice oxidation mechanism (LOM) is lower than that of absorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) because the former can overcome certain limitations. However, controlling the OER pathway from the AEM to the LOM by exploiting the intrinsic properties of the catalyst remains challenging. Herein, we incorporated F anions into the oxygen vacancies of spinel ZnCo 2 O 4 and established a link between the electronic structure and the OER catalytic mechanism. Theoretical density calculations revealed that F upshifts the O 2p center and activates the redox capability of lattice O, successfully triggering the LOM pathway. Moreover, the high electronegativity of F anions is favourable for balancing the residual protonation, which can stabilize the structure of the catalyst., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Nafion has been dominating the proton exchange membrane (PEM) market because of its adequacy for the proton exchange operation. However, because of its high cost, low performance at low relative humidity, and finally environmental unfriendliness, researchers have been developing and working on Nafion alternatives. In this review, we assess how biopolymers present an opportunity as an eco‐friendly material able to replace the conventional Nafion membrane in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). Chitosan and cellulose were the most studied in literature owing to their abundance in nature, low cost, and high affinity for water, which are sought‐after properties for PEM. In addition to that, their ease of modification through their hydroxyl or amine groups represents an opportunity to further enhance their characteristics and thus meet the criteria of diverse applications. The use of biopolymers as an adequate PEM is facing many challenges. Having a practical proton conductivity and securing the physicochemical stability of the biopolymers in fuel cell operating conditions are two of the most important challenges to overcome. This study presents the immobilization with aldehyde groups (glyoxyl carbon felt) of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and formate dehydrogenase (FDH) on carbon-felt-based electrodes. The compatibility of the immobilization method with the electrochemical application was studied with the ADH bioelectrode. The electrochemical regeneration process of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide in its oxidized form (NAD + ), on a carbon felt surface, has been deeply studied with tests performed at different electrical potentials. By applying a potential of 0.4 V versus Ag/AgCl electrode, a good compromise between NAD + regeneration and energy consumption was observed. The effectiveness of the regeneration of NAD + was confirmed by electrochemical oxidation of ethanol catalyzed by ADH in the presence of NADH, which is the no active form of the cofactor for this reaction. Good reusability was observed by using ADH immobilized on glyoxyl functionalized carbon felt with a residual activity higher than 60 % after 3 batches., (© 2022 The Authors. Implantable bioelectronic devices (IBDs) have gained attention for their capacity to conformably detect physiological and pathological signals and further provide internal therapy. However, traditional power sources integrated into these IBDs possess intricate limitations such as bulkiness, rigidity, and biotoxicity. Recently, artificial "tissue batteries" (ATBs) have diffusely developed as artificial power sources for IBDs manufacturing, enabling comprehensive biological‐activity monitoring, diagnosis, and therapy. ATBs are on‐demand and designed to accommodate the soft and confining curved placement space of organisms, minimizing interface discrepancies, and providing ample power for clinical applications. This review presents the near‐term advancements in ATBs, with a focus on their miniaturization, flexibility, biodegradability, and power density. Furthermore, it delves into material‐screening, structural‐design, and energy density across three distinct categories of TBs, distinguished by power supply strategies. These types encompass innovative energy storage devices (chemical batteries and supercapacitors), power conversion devices that harness power from human‐body (biofuel cells, thermoelectric nanogenerators, bio‐potential devices, piezoelectric harvesters, and triboelectric devices), and energy transfer devices that receive and utilize external energy (radiofrequency‐ultrasound energy harvesters, ultrasound‐induced energy harvesters, and photovoltaic devices). Ultimately, future challenges and prospects emphasize ATBs with the indispensability of bio‐safety, flexibility, and high‐volume energy density as crucial components in long‐term implantable bioelectronic devices. This study aimed to develop sorbitol fuel cell catalysts for cathode and anode fuels by synthesizing AgV2O5/C, AgMnO2/C, and PdCeO2/C catalysts. The physical characteristics of the catalysts were analyzed using SEM and EDS. The results showed that the prepared catalysts were small, lumpy, and densely clustered on the carbon surface with small particles. The electrochemical characteristics of the oxidation of alkaline fuels using sorbitol as fuel were investigated by assessing sorbitol concentration ratios of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 per 0.1 M alkaline KOH solution through cyclic voltammetry. The PdCeO2/C catalyst at a concentration of 0.1 M sorbitol solution exhibits the highest potential difference at the potential range of - 0.5 to 0.5 V, resulting in a maximum current density of 0.2 mA/cm². The AgV2O5/C and AgMnO2/C catalysts were tested in the reduction reaction, and the concentration ratios of sorbitol solution per 0.1 M alkaline KOH solution varied from 0.1 to 0.5 M. The results demonstrated a decrease in activity in the catalyst reduction reaction as the sorbitol solution concentration increased, indicating a potential correlation with enhanced oxidation resistance. Direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs) face several challenges such as carbon support corrosion, poor kinetics, and long‐term stability, requiring improved electrocatalyst support development. We synthesized 5 %Pd/fMC−NiO using a microwave‐assisted sodium borohydride‐enhanced polyol method. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope, and X‐ray diffractometry probed the material's surface composition, morphology, and structure. ICP‐OES is employed to quantify palladium loading. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy mapped the functional groups. Cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and chronoamperometry show that the 5 %Pd/fMC−NiO has the lowest activation energy, and with that, the best electroactivity, which is ~16 times higher compared to commercial Pd/C; additionally, the catalyst shows anti‐poisoning properties, and long‐term durability. This is merited to the cooperation and promotional effect of Pd/fMC−NiO. The electrocatalysts' electroactivity improved via enhanced electron movement instigated by NiO. This study introduced the parallelism effect concept borrowed from the graphite structure for controlled electron channeling the 5 % Pd/fMC−NiO electrocatalyst. The theoretical calculations corroborated the experimental findings that our approach favors anchoring and dispersing Pd NPs uniformly, demonstrating NiO′s cooperative and promotional effects. Researchers have been seeking for the most technically‐economical water electrolysis technology for entering the next‐stage of industrial amplification for large‐scale green hydrogen production. Various membrane‐based electrolyzers have been developed to improve electric‐efficiency, reduce the use of precious metals, enhance stability, and possibly realize direct seawater electrolysis. While electrode engineering is the key to approaching these goals by bridging the gap between catalysts design and electrolyzers development, nevertheless, as an emerging field, has not yet been systematically analyzed. Herein, this review is organized to comprehensively discuss the recent progresses of electrode engineering that have been made toward advanced membrane‐based electrolyzers. For the commercialized or near‐commercialized membrane electrolyzer technologies, the electrode material design principles are interpreted and the interface engineering that have been put forward to improve catalytic sites utilization and reduce precious metal loading is summarized. Given the pressing issues of electrolyzer cost reduction and efficiency improvement, the electrode structure engineering toward applying precious metal free electrocatalysts is highlighted and sufficient accessible sites within the thick catalyst layers with rational electrode architectures and effective ions/mass transport interfaces are enabled. In addition, this review also discusses the innovative ways as proposed to break the barriers of current membrane electrolyzers, including the adjustments of electrode reaction environment, and the feasible cell‐voltage‐breakdown strategies for durable direct seawater electrolysis. Hopefully, this review may provide insightful information of membrane‐based electrode engineering and inspire the future development of advanced membrane electrolyzer technologies for cost‐effective green hydrogen production. Developing low-cost and self-supported bifunctional catalysts for highly efficient water splitting devices is of great significance. Herein, different from previously reported NiFe2O4-based electrocatalysts, we have grown nano-NiFe2O4 directly onto the iron foil (IF) surface and in situ introduced Sn4+ into NiFe2O4. The resulting experimental phenomena confirmed that the as-synthesized Sn-NiFe2O4/IF can deliver large-current densities (>1000 mA cm−2) during oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) processes at a low overpotential. The needed overpotentials at the current density of 10 and 1000 mA cm−2 are 231 and 368 mV for OER and 57 and 439 mV for HER, respectively. Additionally, when applied for the two-electrode water splitting, the corresponding needed voltage for Sn-NiFe2O4/IF at the current density of 10 mA cm−2 was only 1.56 V, which was comparable to the commercial Pt/C-RuO2/IF electrode. Thus, the introduced Sn4+ greatly enhanced the electrocatalytic property of Sn-NiFe2O4/IF, resulting in a superior bifunctional catalyst that can be applied for large-scale hydrogen production. In direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs), energy conversion co‐occurs at the anode (alcohol oxidation reaction [AOR]) and cathode (oxygen reduction reaction [ORR]). The sluggishness of AOR and ORR needs highly electrocatalytically active and stable electrocatalysts that boost electrokinetics, which is central in electrocatalysts' architectural design and modulation. This design entails enhanced engineering synthesis protocols, heteroatomic doping, metallic doping/alloying, and deliberate introduction of defective motifs within the electrocatalyst matrix. The electrocatalyst activity and behavior depend on the electrocatalysts' nature, type, composition, and reaction media, acidic or alkaline. Alkaline media permits cheap nonplatinum group metals. This review elucidates the roles and electrocatalytic pathways on different AOR and ORR electrocatalysts and outlines the aspects distinguishing ORR in alkaline and acidic media. It gives up‐to‐date and ultramodern strategies, protocols, and underlying mechanisms pointing to the efficacy and efficiency of electrocatalysts. The focus centers on heteroatomic, metallic dopants, defects effects correlated to electrocatalytic properties and experimental and theoretical findings. For the advancement in the field, the present study discusses critical parameters for improving the performances of electrocatalysts for DAFCs and breakthroughs on the horizon. Conclusively, knowledge gaps and prospects of these materials for industrial viability and reigning futuristic research directions are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Researchers are investigating innovative composite materials for renewable energy and energy storage systems. The major goals of this studies are i) to develop a low‐cost and stable trimetallic oxide catalyst and ii) to change the electrical environment of the active sites through site‐selective Mo substitution. The effect of Mo on NiCoMoO4 is elucidated using both in situ X‐ray absorption spectroscopy and X‐ray diffraction analysis. Also, density functional theory strategies show that NiCoMoO4 has extraordinary catalytic redox activity because of the high adsorption energy of the Mo atom on the active crystal plane. Further, it is demonstrated that hierarchical nanoflower structures of NiCoMoO4 on reduced graphene oxide can be employed as a powerful bifunctional electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction/evolution reactions in alkaline solutions, providing a small overpotential difference of 0.75 V. Also, Zn–air batteries based on the developed bifunctional electrocatalyst exhibit outstanding cycling stability and a high‐power density of 125.1 mW cm−2.
