The effects of the dietary inclusion of a Bacillus-based direct-fed microbial (DFM) candidate on digesta viscosity, bacterial translocation, microbiota composition and bone mineralisation were evaluated in broilers consuming rye-based diets. 2. In the present study, control mash rye-based diets (CON) or Bacillus-DFM supplemented diets (TRT) were administered ad libitum to male broilers in three independent experiments. 3. In Experiments 1 and 2 (n = 25/group), liver samples were taken to evaluate bacterial translocation, digesta samples were used for viscosity measurements and the intestinal microbial flora was evaluated from different intestinal sections to enumerate total recovered gram-negative bacteria (TGB), lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and anaerobic bacteria (TAB). Additionally, both tibias were removed for assessment of bone quality. 4. In Experiment 3, each experimental group had 8 replicates of 20 chickens (n = 160/group). Weekly, body weight (BW), feed intake (FI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were evaluated. At d 28-of-age, samples were taken to determine bacterial translocation, digesta viscosity and bone quality characteristics. 5. In all experiments, consumption of Bacillus-DFM reduced bacterial translocation to the liver and digesta viscosity. Additionally, DFM supplementation improved BW, bone quality measurements and FCR. Moreover, chickens fed on the Bacillus-DFM diet in Experiments 1 and 2 showed a significant reduction in the number of gram-negative and anaerobic bacteria in the duodenal content compared to control. 6. In summary, chickens fed on a rye-based diet without DFM inclusion showed an increase in bacterial translocation and digesta viscosity, accompanied by reduced performance and bone quality variables relative to the Bacillus-DFM candidate group. Hence, incorporation into the feed of a selected DFM ameliorated the adverse anti-nutritional effects related to utilisation of rye-based diets in broilers chickens.

Two independent trials were conducted in the present study to evaluate the effect of 5% glycerol supplementation combined with dietary FloraMax-B11 (FM) against Salmonella Enteritidis colonization in neonate broiler chickens. In each trial, 60 chicks were randomly assigned into 4 groups. Group 1 received a control diet. Group 2 received a control diet supple- mented with 5% glycerol. Group 3 received a control diet supplemented with FM, and group 4 received a control diet supplemented with 5% glycerol and FM. At placement, chickens were challenged with Salmonella Enteritidis at 10 4 cfu/bird. In each trial, 12 chicks were humanely killed 72 h postchallenge, respectively, for Salmonella Enteritidis colonization. Supplementation of 5% glycerol or FM by themselves, showed no signifi- cant effect on Salmonella Enteritidis recovery or inci- dence when compared with control nontreated chick- ens in both trials. However, no detectable Salmonella Enteritidis was observed in the chickens that received the supplementation of 5% glycerol combined with FM in both trials. Further studies are in progress in older birds to substantiate these findings.

The effect of a commercial organic acid (OA) product on BW loss (BWL) during feed with- drawal and transportation, carcass yield, and meat quality was evaluated in broiler chickens. Two experi- ments were conducted in Brazil. Commercial houses were paired as control groups receiving regular water and treated groups receiving OA in the water. Treated birds had a reduction in BWL of 37 g in experiment 1 and 32.2 g in experiment 2. In experiment 2, no differ- ences were observed in carcass yield between groups. Estimation of the cost benefit suggested a 1:16 ratio by using the OA. In experiment 3, conducted in Mexico, significant differences on water consumption, BWL, and meat quality characteristics were observed in chick- ens that were treated with the OA (P < 0.05). These data suggest this OA product may improve animal wel- fare and economic concerns in the poultry industry by reducing BWL and improving meat quality attributes.

Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) have increasingly been used in poultry diets as a consequence of rising grain costs. Some, but not all, sources of DDGS have a variable compositional value, and a high inclusion of this by-product could be considered a risk factor for presentation of enteric diseases. Presently, 2 experiments were conducted using a starter corn-soybean diet (zero to 7 d) and a corn-DDGS-soybean grower diet (8 to 28 d) with or without inclusion of a Bacillus-direct-fed microbial (DFM). In both experiments, day-of-hatch chicks were randomly assigned to 2 different groups: control group without DFM or Bacillus-DFM group, containing 106 spores/g of feed. In each experiment, 8 pens of 20 chicks (n = 160/group) were used. Performance parameters of BW, BW gain (BWG), feed intake (FI), and feed conversion (FCR) were evaluated in each growth phase. Additionally, in experiment 2, intestinal samples were collected to determine duodenal and ileal morphology (n = 8/group), as well as the microbiota population of total lactic acid bacteria (TLAB), total Gram-negative bacteria (TGNB), and total anaerobic bacteria (TAB) on d 28 (n = 16/group). Social concern about misuse of antibiotics as growth promoters (AGP) and generation of multidrug-resistant bacteria have restricted the dietary inclusion of antibiotics in livestock feed in several countries. Direct-fed microbials (DFM) are one of the multiple alternatives commonly evaluated as substitutes of AGP. Sporeformer bacteria from the genus Bacillus have been extensively investigated because of their extraordinary properties to form highly resistant endospores, produce antimicrobial compounds, and synthesize different exogenous enzymes. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate and select Bacillus spp. from environmental and poultry sources as DFM candidates, considering their enzyme production profile, biofilm synthesis capacity, and pathogen-inhibition activity. Thirty-one Bacillus isolates were screened for in vitro relative enzyme activity of amylase, protease, lipase, and phytase using a selective media for each enzyme, with 3/31 strains selected as superior enzyme producers. These three isolates were identified as Bacillus subtilis (1/3), and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (2/3), based on biochemical tests and 16S rRNA sequence analysis. For evaluation of biofilm synthesis, the generation of an adherent crystal violet-stained ring was determined in polypropylene tubes, resulting in 11/31 strains showing a strong biofilm formation. Moreover, all Bacillus strains were evaluated for growth inhibition activity against Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (26/31), Escherichia coli (28/31), and Clostridioides difficile (29/31). Additionally, in previous in vitro and in vivo studies, these selected Bacillus strains have shown to be resistant to different biochemical conditions of the gastrointestinal tract of poultry. Results of the present study suggest that the selection and consumption of Bacillus-DFM, producing a variable set of enzymes and antimicrobial compounds, may contribute to enhanced performance through improving nutrient digestibility, reducing intestinal viscosity, maintaining a beneficial gut microbiota, and promoting healthy intestinal integrity in poultry.

Previous studies conducted in our laboratory have demonstrated that intestinal barrier function can be adversely affected by diet ingredients or feed restriction, resulting in increased intestinal inflammation-associated permeability. Two experiments were conducted in broilers to evaluate the effect of three concentrations of Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1; 2, 1.5, or 1 ppm) on gastrointestinal leakage and liver bacterial translocation (BT). In experiment 1, 240 day-of-hatch male broilers were allocated in two groups, each group had six replicates of 20 chickens (n = 120/group): Control feed or feed + 2 ppm AFB1. In experiment 2, 240 day-of-hatch male broilers were allocated in three groups, each group had five replicates of 16 chickens (n = 80/group): Control feed; feed + 1 ppm AFB1; or feed + 1.5 ppm AFB1. In both experiments, chickens were fed starter (days 1–7) and grower diets (days 8–21) ad libitum and performance parameters were evaluated every week. At day 21, all chicks received an oral gavage dose of FITC-d (4.16 mg/kg) 2.5 h before collecting blood samples to evaluate gastrointestinal leakage of FITC-d. In experiment 2, a hematologic analysis was also performed. Liver sections were aseptically collected and cultured using TSA plates to determine BT. Cecal contents were collected to determine total colony-forming units per gram of Gram-negative bacteria, lactic acid bacteria (LAB), or anaerobes by plating on selective media. In experiment 2, liver, spleen, and bursa of Fabricius were removed to determine organ weight ratio, and also intestinal samples were obtained for morphometric analysis. Performance parameters, organ weight ratio, and morphometric measurements were significantly different between Control and AFB1 groups in both experiments. A trial was conducted to evaluate the influence of dietary Aspergillus Meal (AM) prebiotic on intestinal development, morphology in turkey poults. Day-old Nicholas poults (n = 100) were randomly assigned to two groups. Poults in each group were divided and placed in floor pens with 50 poults each. One group served as a control and received a ration containing no added AM prebiotic. Poults in the treatment group were provided a ration supplemented with 0.2% AM prebiotic. Each dietary regimen and water were provided ad libitum to 30 days of age. Poults were humanely killed by CO2 inhalation and specimens of duodenum and distal ileum were collected at 10, 20 and 30 days. Histology sections were cut (5 μm) and stained with haematoxylin and eosin and combinations of either of periodic acid-Schiff with alcian blue, or high iron diamine with alcian blue stains to evaluate 20 intact villi on each section. The morphometric variables analyzed included villi height, villi surface area and crypt depth. In addition, goblet cells, classified as neutral, acidic or sulpho mucin cells, respectively, were quantitative for each treatment group. At all times of evaluation, AM prebiotic significantly increased the number of acid mucin cells in the duodenum, neutral mucin cells in the ileum and sulpho mucin cells in the duodenum and ileum. Villi height and villi surface area of both duodenum and ileum were significantly increased at days 10 and 30 compared to control. The present study suggest that AM prebiotic has an impact on the mucosal architecture and goblet cells proliferation in the duodenum and ileum of neonate poults.

In the present study, a series of experiments were conducted to evaluate the ability of a combination of 3 ATCC lactobacilli (LAB3) or a commercially available probiotic culture (PROB) to reduce Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (Salmonella Enteritidis) in broiler chicks. Additionally, we varied the timing of PROB administration in relationship to Salmonella challenge and determined the influence on recovery of enteric Salmonella. In experiments 1 to 3, chicks were randomly assigned to treatment groups and were then challenged via oral gavage with Salmonella Enteritidis. Chicks were treated 1 h after Salmonella Enteritidis challenge with LAB3 or PROB. Twenty-four hours posttreatment, cecal tonsils were collected for recovery of enteric Salmonella. In experiments 4 to 7, day-of-hatch chicks were randomly assigned to treatment groups and were then treated with PROB via oral gavage and placed into pens. Chicks were challenged with Salmonella Enteritidis 24 h after treatment via oral gavage. At 24 h after Salmonella Enteritidis challenge, cecal tonsils were collected and recovery of enteric Salmonella was determined. In experiments 8 to 10, 1-d-old chicks were randomly assigned to treatment groups and were then challenged via oral gavage with Salmonella Enteritidis and placed into pens. Chicks were treated 24 h after challenge with PROB via oral gavage. Twenty-four hours post PROB treatment, cecal tonsils were collected and enriched as described above. The electrochemical formation of single silver needles from aqueous silver sulfate was studied under both potentiostatic and galvanostatic conditions utilizing different quasi-2D cells. Under potentiostatic conditions, four (I–IV) stages of growth were distinguished. Stage III involved single needle growth under a quasi-steady-state (q-ss) regime in which, at the millimeter scale, the tip profile remained almost unchanged. Fast growing needles exhibited a truncated quasi-conical tip, and slow growing ones approached prolate hemispheroids. At stage III, the almost constant q-ss silver deposition rate was evaluated from the tip front displacement (dLz/dt) perpendicularly to the tangential plane of the tip. For the cathode to anode potential difference in the range -1.00 ≤ Ec-a ≤ -0.22 V, values of (dLz/dt) in the range 0.08–2.0 μm s-1 were obtained. At the needle stem, the q-ss radial silver deposition rate (dLx/dt) was about two orders of magnitude lower than (dLz/dt). The transition from stage III to IV was characterized by tip thickening, i.e. a change in the tip q-conical profile to that of a prolate hemispheroid, and eventual tip splitting. Scanning electron micrographs at the micrometer scale of single silver needle tips from potentiostatic runs showed either a defined crystallography or an irregular topography covered by a large number of tiny crystals. In contrast, stems were always faceted. This difference indicated that surface relaxation processes following silver ion mass transport and discharge played a relevant role in the needle growth mode. At stage III, the growth regime is described utilizing a dual diffusion (D) and migration (M) model consisting of a DM direct contribution that becomes dominant at the needle stem, and a space charge (SC)-assisted DM contribution that operates at the tip apex. This explanation is consistent with the local cathodic current density values, the concentration ratio of silver clusters at the stem and tip apex surface, and the distinct kinetic behavior of needles produced from potentiostatic and galvanostatic runs. The complex link between mass transport phenomena of silver ions from the binary solution side, the silver ion discharge at the interface and the surface relaxation of silver adatoms and clusters at the metal lattice shed new light on the aspects of single silver needle formation.

OBJECTIVES To determine the frequency of knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations in the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae s.s. from continental Equatorial Guinea; and to relate kdr genotypes with susceptibility to DDT and pyrethroid insecticides in this vector. METHODS Female mosquitoes were collected in two villages, Miyobo and Ngonamanga, of mainland Equatorial Guinea. Insecticide susceptibility tests were performed following WHO procedures. Anopheles gambiae complex specimens were identified to species and molecular form by PCR. Genotyping of the kdr locus was performed by allele-specific PCR and direct sequencing in a subset of samples. RESULTS Both M and S molecular forms of A. gambiae were found in Ngonamanga whereas only the S-form was identified in Miyobo. The two kdr mutations were detected in S-form samples of both villages, with a higher frequency of the kdr-e (Leu-1014-Ser) allele (Miyobo: 16%; Ngonamanga: 40%). The kdr-w (Leu-1014-Phe) mutation was also detected in 3% of the M-form. All individuals tested for pyrethroids were susceptible. A mortality rate of 86% was obtained for DDT. An overall kdr allele frequency (i.e. kdr-e + kdr-w) of 22% was detected in DDT resistant individuals, whereas susceptible individuals had a kdr frequency of 6%. CONCLUSION The co-occurrence of both kdr mutations and reduced susceptibility to DDT found in A. gambiae highlights the importance of implementing efficient surveillance of insecticide resistance in Equatorial Guinea.

Chicks are commonly held for up to 72 h from the time of actual hatch to placement under commercial industry practices. Delaying access to feed and water has been documented to increase susceptibility to pathogens and weight loss, leading to poorly starting flocks with reduced weight gains. Seven experiments were conducted to compare the use of EarlyBirdTM (EB; Sigrah-Zellet, LLC.) to no supplementation (NS) in chick boxes when chicks were held for a 24 h simulated shipping period. Latent class models (LCMs) can be used to assess diagnostic test performance when no reference test (a gold standard) is available, considering two latent classes representing disease or non-disease status. One of the basic assumptions in such models is that of local or conditional independence: all indicator variables (tests) are statistically independent within each latent class. However, in practice this assumption is often violated; hence, the two-LCM fits the data poorly. In this paper, we propose the use of Biplot methods to identify the conditional dependence between pairs of manifest variables within each latent class. Additionally, we propose incorporating such dependence in the corresponding latent class using the log-linear formulation of the model.

The effect of a commercially available lactic acid bacteria probiotic (FM-B11) alone and supplemented with lactose as prebiotic was evaluated for effects on turkey BW during the brooding and growout phases under commercial conditions in 2 experiments. Tag-numbered turkey poults were given the probiotic in either drinking water or feed, and lactose was given in feed. Turkeys were reared in wire pens (4 per treatment) within the brooding house. Experiments were designed for a duration of 26 and 28 d. Only animals from experiment 1 were weighed again before slaughter. SUMMARY To evaluate the effect of a probiotic culture in combination with dietary lactose as a prebiotic, 2 experiments were performed. Treated poults (Lactobacillus spp.-based probiotic culture) received dietary lactose (0.1%) continuously in the feed and probiotic culture (∼10 6 cfu/mL) in the drinking water. Controls received no treatments. Three hundred twenty selected female poults were tagged and randomly divided in 2 treatments with 4 replicates each (n = 40). In experiment 1, poults were challenged with ∼10 4 cfu of Salmonella Enteritidis; however, in experiment 2, no challenge was provided to poults. Body weight was evaluated on d 1, 7, and 14 (experiment 1, trial 1 and 2, experiment 2, trial 3) and on d 1, 8, and 18 (experiment 2, trial 4). Body weight and FCR were significantly (P 0.05) in either BW or FCR. These data suggest that dietary lactose with appropriate probiotic organisms may enhance performance of poults following a mild pathogenic challenge.

We evaluated the ability of a commercially available lactic acid bacteria-based probiotic culture (LAB) to reduce Salmonella Enteritidis or Salmonella Typhimurium in day-of-hatch broiler chicks. In these experiments, chicks were challenged with Salmonella Enteritidis or Salmonella Typhimurium and treated with LAB 1-h postchallenge. Following treatment, cecal tonsils and ceca were aseptically collected for Salmonella Enteritidis or Salmonella Typhimurium enrichment or Salmonella Enteritidis enumeration, respectively. In experiments 1 to 3, LAB significantly reduced the incidence of Salmonella Enteritidis (60 to 70% reduction) or Salmonella Typhimurium (89 to 95% reduction) recovered from the cecal tonsils of day-old broiler chicks 24 h following treatment as compared with controls (P0.05). Additionally, administration of LAB caused a2.9 log(10) reduction of total cecal Salmonella Enteritidis recovered 24 h following treatment as compared with controls (P0.05). In experiments 4 to 7, upon sample enrichment LAB significantly reduced the recovery of Salmonella Enteritidis from the cecal tonsils at 24 h, but not 6 or 12 h posttreatment (P0.05). However, in experiments 6 and 7, when total cecal Salmonella Enteritidis recovery was enumerated, a significant treatment-associated reduction was observed 12 h posttreatment, although in cecal tonsil samples there was no difference in Salmonella Enteritidis incidence at 12 h (P0.05). In these studies, LAB treatment significantly reduced recovery of Salmonella in day-of-hatch broilers.

This study evaluated capsaicin extracted from chili pepper and its prophylactic effect on Salmonella enteritidis (SE) experimental infection, feed conversion, egg production, egg weight and yolk pigmentation in laying hens. Dekalb hens (30/treatment) were fed for 28 days with two different levels (18 and 36 ppm) of dietary capsaicin from paprika oil. Previously, our laboratory has screened and identified Bacillus spp. isolates as direct-fed microbials (DFM). The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the cellulase and xylanase production of these isolates and select the most appropriate Bacillus spp. candidates for DFM. Furthermore, an in vitro digestive model, simulating different compartments of the gastrointestinal tract, was used to determine the effect of these selected candidates on digesta viscosity and Clostridium perfringens proliferation in different poultry diets. Production of cellulase and xylanase were based on their relative enzyme activity. Analysis of 16S rRNA sequence classified two strains as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and one of the strains as Bacillus subtilis. The DFM was included at a concentration of 10(8) spores/g of feed in five different sterile soybean-based diets containing corn, wheat, rye, barley, or oat. After digestion time, supernatants from different diets were collected to measure viscosity, and C. perfringens proliferation. Additionally, from each in vitro simulated compartment, samples were taken to enumerate viable Bacillus spores using a plate count method after heat-treatment. Significant (P 0.05) DFM-associated reductions in supernatant viscosity and C. perfringens proliferation were observed for all non-corn diets. These results suggest that antinutritional factors, such as non-starch polysaccharides from different cereals, can enhance viscosity and C. perfringens growth. Remarkably, dietary inclusion of the DFM that produce cellulase and xylanase reduced both viscosity and C. perfringens proliferation compared with control diets. Regardless of diet composition, 90% of the DFM spores germinated during the first 30 min in the crop compartment of the digestion model, followed by a noteworthy increased in the intestine compartment by ~2log10, suggesting a full-life cycle development. Further studies to evaluate in vivo necrotic enteritis effects are in progress.

SUMMARY We evaluated the effect of ionized reactive oxygen species created using Binary Ionization Technology (BIT) for disinfection of broiler carcasses, table eggs, and treatment of fertile eggs. Previous research has indicated that BIT creates a high concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that lyse bacterial cells on contact. Application of BIT to broiler carcasses that had been intentionally inoculated with 1.58 × 10 6 Salmonella enterica Enteritidis (SE) caused a 1 to 3 log reduction in recoverable SE, depending on the duration of the treatment. Additionally, after inoculation of table eggs with 6.8 × 10 8 cfu of SE, we recovered SE from 95% fewer eggs following enrichment and found significantly fewer (7.77 and 7.41 log reduction) colony-forming units recovered from eggs treated with BIT compared with nontreated control eggs. We also evaluated whether application of the BIT treatment had any effect on hatchability of broiler breeder eggs to determine whether use of this technology could be feasible in a hatchery environment for disinfection of eggs. There were no significant effects of BIT on the hatchability (of total set) of treated eggs as compared with nontreated control eggs; however, there was a slight numerical increase in hatchability, between 5 and 10% in 2 trials. These data suggest that application of BIT technology to carcasses and table eggs could reduce contamination with pathogens and that the application to fertile eggs may not have effects on hatchability of eggs set.

Rye contains high concentrations of non-starch polysaccharides (NSPs), leading to reduced digestibility. Since poultry have little or no endogenous enzymes capable of hydrolyzing these NSP, exogenous carbohydrases as feed additives are used in an attempt to reduce the anti-nutritional effects of these polysaccharides. Previously, an in vitro study conducted in our laboratory showed that inclusion of certain Bacillus direct-fed microbial (DFM) candidates that produce exogenous phytase, lipase, protease, cellulase, and xylanase in high-NSP diets significantly reduced both digesta viscosity and Clostridium perfringens proliferation. In the present study, rye-based turkey starter diets with or without Bacillus-DFM were administered ad libitum to day-of-hatch turkey poults in two independent experiments. In both experiments, day-of-hatch turkey poults were randomly assigned to either a control diet (CON) or a DFM treated diet (n = 25 birds/group). At 10 days-of-age, all turkey poults from experiments 1 and 2 were weighted and 12 turkey poults/group were randomly selected and humanely killed. Liver samples were aseptically collected to evaluate bacterial translocation, and intestinal digesta samples were individually collected to evaluate viscosity. The transport of live animals has important economic and welfare implications. A commerciallyavailable organic acid product (Optimizer ) was added to the drinking water of commercial hen turkeys TM during preslaughter Feed Withdrawal (FW) in two trials. In trial 1, a total of 60 trailers from treated (OA) or control non-treated turkey houses were evaluated. Turkey farmers initiated water treatment on the day before pick up (8-12 h treatment according to label directions). Investigators recorded trailer numbers as they were loaded out of each house to confirm which trailers contained treated birds vs. control non-treated birds. Individual trailer weights were recorded upon arrival to the processing plant and again immediately prior to live hang. A significant reduction in rate of weight loss during holding at the processing plant was observed in the treated turkeys (719 g/min per OA treated trailer vs. 845 g/min per control trailer). The anomalous low-frequency dispersion process observed in perovskite ceramics ${(X}_{2}{\mathrm{BaCuO}}_{5},X=\mathrm{La}--\mathrm{Y})$ is described by a fractal model. The interpretation is given in terms of the Dissado-Hill-Jonscher theory and is based on a cluster description of the structural ordering and fluctuation in carrier-dominated dielectrics. The relationship of the mechanism to that of power-law noise in electrical systems is identified and its dynamical and structural interpretation explored. Particular features of several ceramics related to superconductor compounds are described.

The chemisorption of C atoms on Al(111) was studied by means of the semiempirical MNDO method. The incorporation of the C adatom into the clusters was considered and the most favorable chemisorption site was evaluated. The hcp in-surface site was identified as the most stable adsorption site, in agreement with recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments. This fact allowed us to use the MNDO method to evaluate the interaction energy of two chemisorbed C atoms in order to understand the observed formation of an ordered carbon underlayer. The low mobility of single isolated C adatoms revealed in STM experiments is also discussed.

An analytical method has been used to study the kinetics of a generic heterogeneous catalytic reaction, A + B → AB. This reaction includes the elementary steps of adsorption and desorption of reactants A and B, surface reaction through the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism, and desorption of the product AB. Despite its simplicity, this analytical approach shows some of the general features observed by simulating the present mechanism on a large N × N lattice.5–7 The rate of reaction depends on the rate of desorption of reactants with a maximum at a value similar to those found by performing heavy simulations. Coverage fluctuations of reactants, as a function of their rate of desorption on a 2 × 2 lattice, have a behavior similar to that found on large N × N lattices.

Circulatory assist devices such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation are indicated in cases of cardiogenic shock refractory to optimal conventional treatment. Bleeding is a serious complication of such systems, mainly due to coagulation disorders caused by continuous administration of heparin, as well as platelet dysfunction. Serial coagulation and hemoglobin (Hb) measurements are essential. Hb measurements can be performed through repeated arterial blood gasometry, and more recently with a new spectrophotometric sensor, Masimo Rainbow Radical-7® device, which gives Hb values continuously and non-invasively. We report a case of a patient undergoing cardiac surgery who required extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for severe cardiogenic shock immediately after surgery. We compare the correlation and the level of agreement with Hb levels measured by 2 existing systems in clinical practice. Our results indicate that the Masimo® spectrophotometric monitor showed statistically comparable Hb values, in the correlation (r=.85; P.01) and in agreement with those obtained by serial blood gas analyzer, ABL800 FLEX® (wavelength). In view of these results we consider the Masimo® device as a valid alternative for the continuous follow-up of the Hb and control of bleeding in these patients.

Probiotics are live microorganisms which, in adequate dose, will increase the beneficial microbial population in gut. A commercial lactic acid bacteria-based probiotic FloraMax-B11® (FM) has shown to have beneficial effect in reducing microbial colonization in broilers. The present study was intended to evaluate the effect of FM on growth performance, bone qualities, and morphometric analysis of broiler chickens. We propose a model for the potential of thin metal films, in which (1) we reproduce self-consistent effective potentials (i.e., Lang and Kohn), in fact, better than any approximation in the existing literature, (2) we parameterize the potential as a function of the film thickness, and (3) we approach the classical image potential for large separation from the surfaces. Our potential does not diverge as the electron approaches the surfaces and takes into account the effect of the two surfaces. It reproduces the first peak in the effective potential, which is a Friedel oscillation. We present a simple dependence of the potential with the film thickness that (1) allows a direct description of the quantum size effects and (2) shows how the bulk surface potential is reached. This makes our model useful in the interpretation of tunnel experiments, field emission, and scanning tunneling microscopy. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Mortality is high when cardiogenic shock develops after cardiotomy, making it impossible to discontinue extracorporeal circulation and/or leading to low postoperative cardiac output that is refractory to treatment with vasoactive drugs or implantation of an intra-aortic balloon pump. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) provides temporary assisted circulation, lending hemodynamic and respiratory support to the patient with cardiogenic shock in order to prevent multiple organ failure and death.For this retrospective study of cases in which ECMO was applied in our hospital's assisted circulation unit, we analyzed demographic data, indication, score on the European system for cardiac operative risk evaluation (Euroscore), duration of assistance, complications, and survival.In the first 3 years after the assisted circulation unit was established, during which 1375 cardiac interventions took place, ECMO was used postoperatively in 12 patients (0.87%). In 8 of the patients, assistance was provided during cardiac surgery following cardiotomy and in 4 transplant patients it was used following primary graft failure. The mean (SD) patient age was 56.8 (9.1) years. The Euroscore predicted 37.3% (16.7%) of the deaths. ECMO was used for a mean of 5.4 (2.5) days. The most frequent complications were bleeding in the surgical area, cardiac tamponade, and acute renal insufficiency. Overall in-hospital mortality was 50%, lower than rates reported in the literature.ECMO provided viable temporary support, maintaining adequate cardiac output while the patient's condition could be observed and heart function evaluated. On of the most common, and serious, complications in cardiac surgery is postoperative bleeding. According to the majority of studies, between 10% and 92% of patients subjected to elective surgery require transfusions of blood products and blood derivatives. Transfusions and reinterventions are associated with longer stays in critical care units and a decrease in survival rates. There have been some important changes in the treatment of changes in haemostasis and post-surgical bleeding in the last few years, particularly with the introduction into clinical practice of working procedures backed up by clinical guidelines, as well as the appearance of new drugs. The aim of this work is to describe the main characteristics and update the use of prothrombin complexes that are currently available in Spain, with special emphasis on their use in cardiac surgery.

To analyze clinical records of cardiac surgery patients in an attempt to identify factors associated with mortality in the postoperative critical care units of the public health service hospitals in the Community of Valencia, Spain, in 2007.Retrospective study of cases from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2007. The charts of all patients who underwent cardiac surgery with or without extracorporeal circulation were reviewed. A data collection protocol was followed to obtain information on age, sex, body mass index (BMI), presurgical risk factors, type of surgery, duration of extracorporeal circulation, duration of ischemia, cause of death, and length of stay in the postoperative critical care unit.The study population consisted of 2113 patients at 5 public hospitals; 124 patients (70 men, 54 women) died. The mean (SD) age was 70 (9.43) years (range, 36-91 years). The mean BMI was 28.19 kg/m2 (maximum, 42 kg/m2). The mean Euroscore was 21.92 (maximum, 94.29). Hypertension was present as a preoperative risk factor in most patients (74.2%); dyslipidemia was present in 51.6%, diabetes mellitus in 38.7%, stroke in 73%, and renal failure in 2.4%. It was noteworthy was that the group who underwent coronary revascularization had the highest mortality rate (nearly 35% of the 124 patients). The next highest mortality rate (19.4%) was in patients who had combined procedures (valve repair or substitution plus coronary revascularization). Mortality was 18.5% in the group undergoing aortic valve surgery and 11.3% in those undergoing mitral valve surgery. The mean duration of extracorporeal circulation was 148.63 minutes. The mean duration of myocardial ischemia was 94.91 minutes. The most frequent cause of death was cardiogenic shock (54.8%). This was followed by distributive shock (29.8%) and hemorrhagic shock (8.9%). The mean length of stay in the postoperative critical care unit was 13.6 days. Overall mortality was 5.87%.The highest mortality rate among cardiac surgery patients in postoperative critical care units in hospitals in the Community of Valencia in 2007 was in patients who underwent coronary revascularization. The most prevalent preoperative risk factor was hypertension. Cardiogenic shock and distributive shock were the most frequent causes of death in these patients. A system for classifying risk is needed in order to predict mortality in critical care units and improve perioperative care.

We set up a model for the adsorption energy for a closed-packed hexagonal monolayer deposited on a substrate surface of the same structure, but different lattice constant, as a function of the epitaxy angle between the principal axis. The surface substrate potential is expressed in the form of a periodic potential with symmetry and periodicity of the substrate surface. The effect of a Lactobacillus spp.-based probiotic (FM-B11) on Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (SE) recovery was evaluated in liquid (Expt. 1) and lyophilized (Expt. 2) forms in two separate experiments with two trials each. For each trial, 80 broiler chicks were randomly allocated into two treatments: control and probiotic culture. All chicks were challenged with SE (approximately 10(4) colony-forming units [cfu]) upon arrival at our laboratory. In both experiments, probiotic culture was administered in the drinking water for 3 consecutive days at a final concentration of approximately 10(6) cfu/ml, beginning 1 hr after SE challenge. Cecal tonsils were aseptically removed at 24 and 72 hr postchallenge, followed by enrichment and plating on xylose lactose deoxycholate (XLD) agar for the presence or absence of Salmonella-typical colonies. In Expt. 1, a significant reduction (P0.05) in SE-positive samples was observed in both trials at 24 and 72 hr postchallenge. Additionally, in Expt. 2, the lyophilized probiotic decreased (P0.05) SE recovery at both 24 and 72 hr postchallenge compared with the control group in trial 1. In trial 2, SE evaluation was performed only at 72 hr after challenge and fewer (P0.001) treated samples were positive for SE. Results showed that application of either liquid or lyophilized probiotic culture in the drinking water for 3 consecutive days can help to reduce SE recovery from young birds, although further research is needed to elucidate the mechanism of this response.

To determine the frequency of knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations in the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae s.s. from continental Equatorial Guinea; and to relate kdr genotypes with susceptibility to DDT and pyrethroid insecticides in this vector.Female mosquitoes were collected in two villages, Miyobo and Ngonamanga, of mainland Equatorial Guinea. Insecticide susceptibility tests were performed following WHO procedures. Anopheles gambiae complex specimens were identified to species and molecular form by PCR. Genotyping of the kdr locus was performed by allele-specific PCR and direct sequencing in a subset of samples.Both M and S molecular forms of A. gambiae were found in Ngonamanga whereas only the S-form was identified in Miyobo. The two kdr mutations were detected in S-form samples of both villages, with a higher frequency of the kdr-e (Leu-1014-Ser) allele (Miyobo: 16%; Ngonamanga: 40%). The kdr-w (Leu-1014-Phe) mutation was also detected in 3% of the M-form. All individuals tested for pyrethroids were susceptible. A mortality rate of 86% was obtained for DDT. An overall kdr allele frequency (i.e. kdr-e + kdr-w) of 22% was detected in DDT resistant individuals, whereas susceptible individuals had a kdr frequency of 6%.The co-occurrence of both kdr mutations and reduced susceptibility to DDT found in A. gambiae highlights the importance of implementing efficient surveillance of insecticide resistance in Equatorial Guinea.

In this chapter we prepare the ground for the proof of the Jung-Abhyankar theorem in section 2 and the study of quasiordinary power series in section 4 of chapter V. We assume that the reader is acquainted with the notion of power series over a field; in section 1, for the convenience of the reader, we give some background, introduce convergent power series over the real and complex numbers in section 2, and prove Weierstras division and preparation theorem in section 3. The category of formal (resp. analytic) algebras—these are homomorphic images of formal (resp. convergent) rings of power series—is treated in section 4. The last section considers, in particular, the completion of an analytic algebra; these results are needed to prove the convergent case of the Jung-Abhyankar theorem.

The theory of complete (= integrally closed) ideals of a two-dimensional regular local ring R was introduced by Zariski [cf. [191] and the appendix of [204]]. He used it in his paper [192] to resolve surface singularities. Similarly we shall use facts from this theory in section 7 of chapter VIII.
