(1) Background: The Cordia alliodora (Ruiz & Pav.) Oken (laurel) natural regeneration management is a widespread practice among smallholders in the Amazon upper basin for the establishment of traditional agroforestry systems. This tree management approach is opposite to the development project proposals that contemplate reforestation with nursery seedlings in the Amazon region. The present study evaluated the effects of thinning levels on the diameter and basal area increment of laurel in a traditional agroforestry system; (2) Methods: A randomized complete block design with three replications was used, and the target variables were the growth rate of diameter at breast height (DBH) and the basal area of trees. Twelve square field plots, 400 m² each, were established in a plot network covering a 1.0 km × 0.5 km area. Three thinning levels were applied: light, moderate, and intensive thinning; (3) Results: The traditional agroforestry system investigated was characterized by a marginal growth of laurel trees, with an average yield of 125.26 m3 ha−1 (±15.39) and MAI of 13.92 m3 ha−1 at 9 years of age with a tree density of 418 trees ha−1. The average value of the relation between the number of trees and the basal area removed (NG value) was 1.15, with small variation among plots, so all of them were thinned from below. The intensive thinning treatment, leaving 200 trees ha−1, caused the greatest annual increase in individual tree DBH (2.03 cm) and basal area (61.37 cm2) in both absolute and relative terms and improved tree height/diameter ratio; (4) Conclusions: Management of laurel natural regeneration for the establishment of traditional agroforestry systems could be improved by thinning at early ages, leaving 200 well-spaced laurel trees per ha.

Introducción: Pinus pseudostrobus, especie de importancia ecológica y económica en México, tiene amplia distribución y variación intraespecífica, lo que genera controversias en la identificación de sus unidades taxonómicas operativas (UTO).Objetivos: Evaluar características morfológicas de conos y acículas de P. pseudostrobus para distinguir variedades e identificar caracteres con mayor capacidad de discriminación. Materiales y métodos: Se midieron 12 caracteres en conos y 20 en acículas en muestras de 153 árboles identificados en cuatro UTO putativas. Se realizaron análisis de varianza univariada y multivariada, estimación de componentes de varianza y discriminación canónica (ADC) con validación cruzada.Resultados y discusión: Trece características de acículas y 12 de conos mostraron diferencias significativas entre UTO. La varianza entre UTO aumentó 6.8 %, en promedio, al considerar las variedades oaxacana y apulcensis como UTO distintas. El análisis multivariado confirmó diferencias significativas en el follaje y conos entre UTO. La variación explicada por el ADC aumentó de 0.35 a 0.74 y 0.76 al utilizar variables de follaje, conos y en conjunto, respectivamente. Ocho caracteres de conos permitieron la discriminación entre UTO con error promedio de 9.2 %.Conclusiones: A pesar de la amplia variación intraespecífica fue posible distinguir las principales UTO de P. pseudostrobus con marcadores morfológicos de conos, con implicaciones importantes hacia un mejor manejo de los recursos genéticos de la especie. El trabajo muestra evidencias de diferencias morfoanatómicas entre las variedades oaxacana y apulcensis.

A systematic review from 1962 to August 2021 summarizes the research on Hartwegʼs pine (Pinus hartwegii). We identify research gaps and propose new direction for future studies and discuss the main study topics. Hartwegʼs pine (Pinus hartwegii Lindl.) is a high-value timber species adapted to the harsh alpine environment of high-elevation mountains (3000–4200 m) in Mexico, where it provides a wide array of ecosystem services to society. However, this species is currently facing temperature increases associated with global warming, with models predicting upward altitudinal shifts to maintain suitable growth conditions. Here, we present a systematic review of Hartwegʼs pine to establish current knowledge, identify research gaps, and indicate directions for future studies. This search recovered 196 scientific references from 1962 to August 2021, which were classified into 21 research topics. References to Hartwegʼs pine increased considerably during the period from 2000 to 2021, representing 77% of the total publications. Most of the references were focused on the management of the species (n = 89) and its relationships with climate change (n = 49). Fewer references were focused on human impacts on the species, taxonomy, and systematics, as well as biogeochemical and hydrological cycles, phenology, and evolution. Most of the study areas were in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, such as in Izta-Popo National Park, Cofre de Perote National Park, the Nevado de Toluca Flora and Fauna Protection Area, and Cumbres del Ajusco National Park. These results highlight the incipient knowledge that we have about population genetics, phenotypic plasticity, physiology, biotic interactions and about of the specific environmental conditions where P. hartwegii populations develop, which limits our capacity to understand how this species will respond to global warming and whether there are risks to the persistence of these forests and the ecosystem services they provide, both to local human populations and those located farther down the mountain.

Natural hybridization can manifest different evolutionary results, such as accelerating differentiation and facilitating speciation through the rapid origin of new biochemical compounds, physiological or morphological phenotypes that allow hybrid species to occupy new habitats, which for parental species would be inaccessible. However, these expectations are not always fulfilled, because natural hybridization between divergent populations can lead to inadequate or unviable hybrids and, therefore, lower forest stability and productivity. Using pure species Pinus arizonica, P. cembroides, P. durangensis, P. engelmannii, P. leiophylla, P. lumholtzii and P. teocote trees and their natural hybrids, this study aims to determine for the first time: (i) morphological differences between pure pine trees and their hybrids molecularly detected, (ii) differences in vigor between 1970 seeds from trees of pure pine species and their hybrid trees (hereinafter called pure and hybrid parents), (iii) differences in vigor between 3465 seedlings from 1421 pure and hybrid parents, and (iv) whether growth of seedlings of hybrid parents is differently associated to parent tree’s environmental conditions, than growth of seedlings of pure parents. The seedlings grew under equal nursery conditions. Our results show some significant differences in morphological traits between the seed trees of pure species and their respective putative hybrid seed trees, and in seed and seedling fitness indices. In contrast to the mean growth of seedlings of hybrid parents, the mean growth of seedlings from pure parents was significantly associated with the parent tree’s bioclimatic conditions studied (R2 = 0.70 vs 0.83). There were only some individuals that presented hybrid superiority.

The study of vegetative phenology is important to understand adaptation to different environments and potential trade-offs with growth traits. Crown leaf-out and leaf-fall phenology was evaluated on 168 open-pollinated families from 19 Cedrela odorata provenances in an eleven-year-old provenance/progeny trial established in the state of Veracruz, Eastern coast of Mexico. The objectives were: (a) to evaluate the extent of inter- and intra-population genetic variation of leaf phenology traits; (b) to examine the relationship between leaf phenology traits and climate variables at the population level; (c) to estimate the genetic relationships between leaf phenology and growth traits; and (d) to evaluate the accuracy, in terms of genetic control, of using alternative methods to measure leaf phenology in broadleaf trees. The study revealed significant genetic variation in leaf phenology traits both among and within populations. Leaf-out traits showed higher genetic variation than leaf-fall traits. A moderate to large genetic differentiation among Cedrela odorata populations was found; Qst values for leaf-out were 2–6 times higher than those for leaf-fall. Leaf-fall was primarily associated with mean annual temperature, while leaf-out and length of the leafless period were related to annual precipitation and the aridity index of the site of origin. Leaf phenology traits showed moderate to high genetic control (h2i = 0.12–0.67; h2f = 0.27–0.72). However, it was higher for leaf-out traits, so they might play a more important adaptive role. Genetic correlations between leaf phenology and growth traits allow selecting early flushing genotypes within populations to increase adaptation and growth, but caution should be taken when selecting among populations.

La planta producida en charolas desarrolla raíces envolventes que afectan su crecimiento posterior. El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar la morfología y el crecimiento radical de Pinus patula Schiede ex Schltdl. et Cham. producido en tres tipos de charolas con cavidades de 170 cm3, dos de plástico y una de poliestireno, con y sin recubrimiento de cobre para podar la raíz de la planta. La hipótesis fue que la planta producida en charolas con recubrimiento de Cu(OH)2 al 7%, al trasplantarse a envases de mayor capacidad, presenta crecimientos radicales superiores a los producidos en las mismas charolas sin recubrimiento. El diseño experimental fue completamente al azar con arreglo factorial 3 × 2 (tres tipos de charola, sin y con impregnación), y cuatro repeticiones por tratamiento. Un tratamiento adicional de charola con diseño para poda radical aérea se incluyó para comparar ambos tipos de poda. Las diferencias estadísticas entre tratamientos se detectaron con ANDEVA, con el procedimiento GLM y la comparación de medias con la prueba de Tukey (p≤0.05). A los nueve meses en vivero, las plantas producidas en charolas con recubrimiento de cobre y diseño para poda radical aérea desarrollaron menos raíces envolventes que las producidas en las mismas charolas sin este tratamiento o diseño (0.1 vs. 3.3 y 0.2 vs. 3.5). Las pruebas de crecimiento radical se realizaron en macetas de 13.2 L durante 1.5 meses. Las plantas con poda radical, por efecto del cobre y del aire, desarrollaron tasas de crecimiento relativo mensual de raíz superiores a las plantas sin poda, en crecimiento horizontal (0.28 vs. 0.15 y 0.18 vs. 0.12 g g-1 por mes) y en crecimiento total de raíces (0.37 vs. 0.29 y 0.30 vs. 0.25 g g-1 por mes). La planta producida en charolas de poliestireno fue superior en calidad morfológica y radical que la planta de las charolas de plástico.

Introduction: Basal area increment (BAI) is an indicator of forest productivity that varies with tree age and site factors such as soil and climate. Objective: To generate tree-ring width index (RWI) and BAI chronologies of Pinus hartwegii Lindl., relate them to climatic variables, and study the variation in BAI at different altitudes and aspects. Materials and methods: Four observation sites were identified, combining northwest (NW) and southwest (SW) aspects, as well as altitudes of 3 800 and 3 700 m. At each site, the temperature was recorded every four hours for 435 days and 32 growth ring segments were collected using a Pressler´s increment borer. Tree-ring width was measured and BAI was calculated; the correlation index between these indicators and the climatic variables was Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Results and discussion: The RWI series from the four observation sites had an intercorrelation of 0.33 (P < 0.01). Two low-growth periods were detected, one between 1950 and 1960 and the other between 1990 and 2005. Site SO-3700 had a different growth pattern, due to a second growth phase beginning in 1978, possibly a benefit resulting from increased temperature. The previous autumn temperature, spring temperature and April-September precipitation of the current year explained the variation in BAI (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The BAI of P. hartwegii could respond favorably to the predicted increases in temperature at an altitude of 3 700 m with southwest aspect.

Las plantaciones de árboles de navidad con la especie Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco ocupan 10% de la superficie total de este tipo de plantaciones en México. El tizón suizo es una enfermedad propia de del género Pseudotsuga, originada por el hongo Phaeocryptopus gaeumannii (T. Rohde) Petrak (1938). Los principales síntomas incluyen follaje clorótico y abscisión prematura de acículas infectadas, lo que resulta en copas ralas. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la relación entre la fertilización química y el estado nutrimental de los árboles con los niveles de severidad e incidencia de la enfermedad. La hipótesis fue que hay una correlación entre el estado nutrimental y la variación del grado de infestación del tizón suizo en P. menziesii. El estudio se estableció en el predio multifuncional “El Manantial” en Aquixtla, Puebla. Los tratamientos fueron fertilización con urea y sulfato de potasio y control fitosanitario químico con propiconazol y prochloraz. El diseño experimental fue bloques al azar generalizado, evaluando dos factores controlados con tres niveles (factorial 32) y como factor de confusión o bloqueo el nivel visual de transparencia de copa asociado al tizón suizo. La incidencia y la severidad se evaluaron. Los resultados del ANDEVA no indicaron diferencias significativas. De las variables nutrimentales las de mayor asociación a la severidad e incidencia fueron el contenido de Ca y Mn, y en menor medida, Cu, Mg y N. Entre los tratamientos se observaron antagonismos y sinergismos con efecto en el estado nutrimental. Los fungicidas influyen en la absorción, transporte y asimilación de los nutrimentos.

Symptoms of forest decline, apparently due to climate change, have become evident in the last 10 years on the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt and northwestern temperate forest of Mexico, particularly at the xeric (low elevational) limit of several forest tree species. We review and provide recent evidence of massive infestation of timberline Pinus hartwegii Lindl. by the mistletoes Arceuthobium globosum Hawksw. & Wiens and Arceuthobium vaginatum (Humb. & Bonpl. ex Willd.) J.Presl; insufficient Abies religiosa (Kunth) Schltdl. & Cham. seedling recruitment at the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve; indications of inbreeding and defoliation in endangered Picea chihuahuana Martínez, Picea martinezii T.F. Patt., Picea mexicana Martínez, and extreme southern populations of Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco; and the incidence of unusual pest and disease outbreaks (e.g., Dendroctonus Erichson, 1836 spp., Neodiprion autumnalis Smith, and Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands) in several conifer and oak species. We also discuss a difficult question: Is natural genetic variation sufficient to provide populations with the adaptive variation necessary to survive the natural selection imposed by projected climate change scenarios, or will phenotypic plasticity be exhausted and populations decline? Controversial ex situ conservation within natural protected areas, assisted migration, and translocation of species ensembles are discussed as options by which to accommodate projected climatic change impacts on the management and conservation practices of the megadiverse Mexican temperate forest.

Introduction: In Pinus radiata D. Don, one of the most widely planted pines globally, frost damages plantations at the seedling stage. Objective: To determine differences in growth and tolerance to low temperatures of native populations (Guadalupe and Cedros islands) of P. radiata in greenhouse and outdoors conditions, under different levels of soil moisture. Materials and methods: Low-temperature tolerance was determined through the damage index (DI) in freezing tests at -12 °C during 4 h. In each environment (greenhouse and outdoors) two soil moisture treatments were defined (irrigation and drought). The DI was evaluated with the method of electrical conductivity in primary needles during winter and spring. The absolute growth rate (AGR) of the terminal shoot was obtained by measuring the total height of the seedlings. Results and discussion: Average DI of 50 and 64 % were obtained in winter and spring, respectively. In greenhouse, DI was different (P ≤ 0.05) between populations, being higher in Guadalupe (>59 %) than in Cedros ( Conclusion: The population of Guadalupe is more sensitive to low temperatures with greater variation in DI, due to its growth dynamics. Differences between populations are useful in the genetic improvement of the species.

Introduction: The production of seedlings in containers implies the risk of deforming the root. This damage persists and increases after outplanting causing negative effects on the plants. Objective: To evaluate outplanting performance of Pinus patula Schltdl. & Cham. as an effect of root pruning and containers used in the nursery. Materials and methods: Nine-month-old seedlings were grown in three 170 cc containers: plastic tray, polystyrene tray and grid with containers with 54, 77 and 42 cavities, respectively. The cavities were impregnated with copper hydroxide to encourage chemical root pruning; additionally, an aerial root pruning treatment was included (containers with lateral openings). Survival and growth of P. patula were evaluated under field conditions during two years in 72 plants per treatment, randomly distributed in six blocks or replications. Results and discussion: Pruned and unpruned plants showed significant differences (P ≤ 0.05) in survival (89 vs. 79 %), height (154.0 vs. 147.1 cm) and relative annual growth rates of diameter (0.97 vs. 0.93 cm·cm-1·year-1) and height (0.97 vs. 0.92 cm·cm-1·year-1). Plants in plastic containers and polystyrene trays had the best growth and survival rates. The interaction container*pruning was not significant. In spite of starting with the lowest sizes, the plants in containers designed for aerial root pruning had similar characteristics to those grown in the same containers with and without chemical root pruning. Conclusion: Root pruning favored survival and growth of P. patula after outplanting and had a greater effect than the type of container used.

Introduction: In response to climate change, plants can adapt, migrate or die; however, migration by natural dispersion of seed can be very slow. Objective: To determine productive potential, dispersal distance and seed bank of Lupinus montanusKunth (lupine) at the upper limit (4 200 m) of its natural distribution at the “Nevado de Toluca” mountain. Materials and methods: The seed bank was estimated in an area of 1.88 m2. Three sampling sites were established with plants in reproductive stage (15 plants) isolated from other adult plants. Seed production was determined in traps placed at the four orientations of each plant and spatial pattern of dispersal was also determined. Results and discussion: Seedbank density was 4.26 seeds∙m-2 of soil. Lupinus montanus produced over 5 500 seeds per plant in one reproductive cycle; its seed potential was associated with plant height and number of stems. The number of seeds collected varied significantly (P < 0.0001) with respect to distance from the mother plant. The dispersion curve was adjusted (P < 0.01) to a negative exponential model (R2 = 0.849). Dispersal in the four orientations was symmetrical; 97 % of the seeds fell at a distance ≤2 m from the mother plant. Conclusions: Only 3.2 % of the seeds of L. montanus reached a distance greater than 2 m from the mother plant; however, dispersal is uniform in all orientations, therefore soil slope does not represent a limiting factor for the altitudinal migration of species.

Introduction: Annual variation in growth ring characteristics has an impact on productivity and wood quality. Objective: To evaluate radial growth in two Pinus patula Schltdl. & Cham. plantations of different ages and thinning intensity, as well as its relationship to interannual variation in temperature and rainfall. Materials and methods: Growth ring characteristics were analyzed in wood samples from 13- and 23-year-old plantations, subjected to three thinning intensities (null, light and moderate). The characteristics were related to climate data during the years of ring formation using Pearson’s correlation analysis. Results and discussion: In the 1995 plantation, ring characteristics did not show significant differences (P > 0.10) between plots with and without thinning, due to excessive competition and crown recession. Ring width, and early and latewood width, was significantly associated (P < 0.10; r ≥ 0.40) with average minimum temperature. In the 2005 plantation, trees from the thinned plots showed greater ring width, earlywood width and basal area increment than those from the unthinned plot. In this plantation only latewood width was positively associated (P Conclusion: Growing space and competition intensity mainly affected ring and earlywood width. Environmental factors influence ring characteristics.

Introduction: Grafting allows full multiplication of phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of genetically improved trees. Objective: To determine the influence of bud origin, rootstock fertilization, grafting period and grafting techniques on the success of grafting, growth, and survival of intraspecific grafts in Pinus pseudostrobus var. oaxacana (Mirov) Harrison. Materials and methods: The effect of four factors was evaluated ([a] two bud sources, [b] three rootstock fertilization doses, [c] three grafting seasons and [d] two grafting techniques) on the success of grafting, shoot growth (Sg) and survival. An analysis of variance was carried out to determine the effect of factors a, b, c, and d on successful grafting and Sg, and a Log-Rank test was carried out for survival analysis. Results and discussion: Significant differences (P ≤ 0.05) were obtained for factors a, c and d. Grafting during winter (December 2018 and February 2019) using the side-veneer grafts technique and buds coming from Santa Catarina Ixtepeji showed the highest values of successful grafting (≥25.5 %), Sg (≥14.5 cm) and survival (≥20.5 %). Final survival decreased from 100 to 27 % 90 days after grafting. Conclusions: Grafting period, bud origin, and grafting technique, individually or interacting with, are determinant factors for the success of intraspecific grafting on P. pseudostrobus var. oaxacana

Con el propósito de determinar la variación genética entre procedencias en características del crecimiento, supervivencia, daños por heladas y el grado de interacción genotipo x ambiente, se estableció un ensayo de nueve procedencias de Pinus pseudostrobus Lindl. típico y dos procedencias de P. pseudostrobus var. apulcensis Mart. en dos sitios con diferente altitud (2200 y 2800 m), en los bosques de la Comunidad Indígena de Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro, Michoacán, México. Se encontraron diferencias significativas entre procedencias (P < 0.05) en el crecimiento en altura a los 15, 20 y 24 meses de edad, en el diámetro basal y el diámetro de copa a los 24 meses y en la fenología de la yema a los 27 meses de edad, así como entre sitios de plantación para el crecimiento en altura a los 15 meses de edad, diámetro basal, diámetro de copa y supervivencia a los 24 meses, fenología de la yema a los 16 y 27 meses, y en los daños por heladas a los 15 meses (después del primer invierno). Las procedencias de P. pseudostrobus típico presentaron un crecimiento superior a las de P. pseudostrobus var. apulcencis, lo que apoya su distinción taxonómica. Una procedencia local (Cerro de Tumbiscatillo) de P. pseudostrobus típico tuvo el mejor crecimiento en altura, de aproximadamente el doble que las procedencias de la var. apulcensis. Se detectó interacción genotipo x ambiente en el diámetro basal de las plantas.

La diversidad de plantas vasculares está relacionada con la productividad y resiliencia de los bosques, por lo tanto, el desarrollo de indicadorespara su caracterización es fundamental. La riqueza de especies vasculares (S) ha mostrado ser un buen indicador de la diversidadde otros grupos biológicos. Asimismo, se ha propuesto que la riqueza de tipos funcionales de plantas (Sg), se correlaciona significativamentecon la riqueza de especies y, por lo tanto, puede ser usada como un indicador sustituto. En este trabajo se analiza la relaciónriqueza-área de muestreo (A), con bases teóricas y datos empíricos para proponer un marco teórico generalizado de las relaciones entrelos parámetros de las curvas: S-A, Sg-A y S-Sg. Se evalúa el modelo potencial y el logarítmico de las curvas de acumulación riqueza-áreade especies de plantas vasculares y tipos funcionales, estos últimos caracterizados mediante una clasificación basada en 36 atributosfuncionales en 15 sitios de muestreo de 1000 m2 en bosques de oyamel del Monte Tláloc, Estado de México. Los resultados muestranestimaciones de riqueza equiparables con las mediciones directas usando solamente un tipo de riqueza para estimar el otro. Esto puedesimplificar considerablemente la obtención de indicadores de diversidad en inventarios de plantas vasculares.

Introduction: Regeneration of forest stands under management is one of the most relevant silvicultural practices for forest cultivation. Objective: To compare growth and water balance for both naturally regenerated and planted seedlings in Pinus patula Schltdl. &Cham. stands harvested with the seed tree method in the ejido Carbonero Jacales, Huayacocotla, Veracruz. Materials and methods: Four sites per stand with natural regeneration and planted seedlings were selected for paired comparison. Origin and age of seedlings were recorded at each site, water potential was measured throughout the day during the dry season in 2019, also annual height and diameter growth at the base of the stem during the period 2018-2019. Results: Naturally regenerated seedlings had significantly (P ≤ 0.01) higher annual height growth (73.8 ± 12.29 cm) compared to planted seedlings (60.8 ± 12.39 cm); the same was for diameter at stem base (20.52 ± 3.51 vs. 14.76 ± 3.54 mm). Natural regeneration also showed significantly higher (P ≤ 0.05) diurnal water deficit recovery capacity (-0.90 MPa) compared to planted seedlings (-1.06 MPa). Conclusion:P. patula naturally regenerated seedlings had better annual growth and better physiological performance in root, which allowed a faster recovery to diurnal water deficit in foliage.

Synchronization between female receptiveness and pollen dispersal, and fecundity of clones influence effective population size and genetic diversity of germplasm produced in seed orchards. Our objective was to determine clonal variation in phenological synchronization and in cone production in a Pinus patula seed orchard. Two-year phenology data of female and male strobili from a sample of 31 clones, and of male strobili in trees from neighboring natural stands of the same species were used. Synchronization indices between female receptiveness and pollen release of the same clone (O̅iP̅i), of other clones (O̅i P̅j), and of natural stands (O̅i P̅NS) were calculated for each clone and averaged per precocity group (early, intermediate, and late). Genetic parameters for cone production of clones during three consecutive cone harvests were estimated, as was their relationship to precocity and synchronization index O̅i P̅NS. Cone production showed a broad variation among clones and between years, with strong genetic control (H2c ≥ 0.80) and stable (rB ≥ 0.79) between yeas. There was wide clonal variation in synchronization indices, but no significant variation was found in most cases among precocity groups, neither were they consistent between years. Negative correlations [rp = -0.37 and -0.40 (P < 0.05)] in cone production per clone in two years with the O̅i P̅NS index in the first year, indicated that the most prolific clones had lower synchronization with pollen release in natural stands in the orchard’s vicinity, and thus less risk of genetic contamination.

Introduction: Selection of plants not adapted to the environment and low water availability are factors that limit the success of reforestation. Objective: To determine drought resistance in plants from three provenances of Pinus cembroides Zucc. and three of P. orizabensis D. K. Bailey and Hawksworth. Materials and methods: An irrigation experiment (38 to 45 % moisture) and a drought experiment (30 to 36 % moisture) were established for 11 months, starting with 16-month-old plants. A split-plot experimental design consisting of two moisture environments (irrigation and drought) with replicates (four blocks) nested within them was used; in each block six populations (three per species) with 10 plants per experimental unit were evaluated. Results and discussion: The biomass in different parts of the plants was 24 to 51 % lower in drought. Pinus cembroides had greater growth in height, stem base diameter and stem and root biomass in irrigation, and greater growth in diameter and biomass of branches and root in drought than P. orizabensis. The aerial/root biomass ratio was higher in P. orizabensis, which increased by 34 % in drought. In P. orizabensis, the provenance with the best performance in both environments was the one from the highest elevation. Conclusion: Pinus cembroides showed greater growth and drought resistance than P. orizabensis. There are differences among provenances within each species in restrictive and non-limited moisture conditions.

Introduction: Forest management is necessary for forest conservation and the security of natural assets and people; however, forest management can have negative effects on some soil properties. Objective: To determine whether forest management in a Mediterranean forest basin, consisting of Quercus suber L. and Pinus halepensis Mill., causes increased runoff and eroded material at slope level. Materials and methods: Seven land-use units were selected: a) dense forest (no management); b) recently managed cork oak forest, c) recently managed pine forest; d) cork oak forest with two years of management, e) pine forest with two years of management, f) bare terrain with herbaceous vegetation and (g) a forest road. In each area, four rainfall simulations were carried out from a height of 2 m, at a pressure of 1.7 kg·cm-2, equivalent to a rainfall intensity of 60 mm·h-1. An ANOVA was performed and significant differences were verified (post-hoc Tukey test, P Results and discussion: The forest road and the bare terrain, areas devoid of vegetation, produced more runoff (4 to 12 %) than more vegetated areas ( Conclusion: There is no difference in the generation of runoff and erosion in the managed areas, both pine and cork oak, compared to dense or unmanaged forest.

Introduction: Peasants in La Huacana, Michoacan, have developed local knowledge about natural resources, including soil. Objective: To compare local soil knowledge with technical knowledge to elucidate whether peasants identify horizons and give them names and attributes. Materials and methods: Thirty-one trial pits were made and the profiles were described in collaboration with the peasants. Samples were taken by horizons and strata to determine their properties in the laboratory. The obtained data were subjected to discriminant analysis and principal component analysis. Results and discussion: The soil classes present in the study area were: Polvilla, Barrosa, Charanda, Tocura, Cementante, Cascajo, Balastre and Tepetate. The peasants named the soil profile horizons/materials as soil classes, making it possible to find several soil classes in one profile. These classes were statistically differentiated in the profile on the basis of physical and chemical properties; 72.13 % of the cases were correctly classified. Conclusion: For the first time, it is reported that the names of soil classes corresponded to horizons and layers of recently buried soils and not to the complete soil profile.

Background: Mountain forest soils (≥2,500 m a.s.l.[1]), where elevation is crucial in the ecosystem dynamic, have a great capacity to capture and preserve carbon for a long time. The aim of this research was to determine the role of elevation combined with soil, climate, and vegetation variables on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks distribution under P. hartwegii in the Nevado de Toluca Volcano, a protected area in Mexico. Topsoil samples (0-15 cm depth) collected every 100 m in elevation (3,400-4,000 m) were chemically and physically examined in statistical analysis together with vegetation structure and climate variables. Derived from field forest conditions, elevation plots were additional analyzed as logged (3,400-3,800 m) vs no-logged (3,900-4,000 m). Results: SOC stocks followed a significant linear trend (r2= 0.70; p= 0.02) along the elevation gradient, being highest at 4,000 m (173.1 ± 5.2 Mg C ha-1) and lowest at 3,700 m (146.8 Mg C ha-1). Multiple regression analyses showed that SOM, BD, and mean annual temperature (MAT) were the main abiotic drivers of SOC stocks variability (94.5 %) along the elevation gradient. Meanwhile, from the logistic multiple regression, higher tree shrubs and herbs density, in addition to lower tree height and grass cover at lower elevations, indicate a significant effect of logging on soil traits and vegetation structure, depending on the elevation plot. Conclusions: This research evaluated the SOC stocks and the potential effect of current warming over mountain soils, using the elevation as a proxy for both environmental and human drivers of SOC stocks in mountain forest ecosystems. Higher SOM and grass cover, larger-diameter trees together with low temperatures and logging restrictions in the high elevation range suggest a slower decomposition rate and SOC long-term stability. Despite the fact that we do not know about the intensity and cutting cycle, nor the size of the clearings derived from the trees removed, results from this research show how logging could exacerbate these effects and diminish SOC stocks, as well as the capacity of mountain soils to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Con el propósito de evaluar la eficiencia de la selección temprana en Pinus ayacahuite Ehren. var. ayacahuite, se estimó el control genético en el crecimiento en altura y diámetro de los árboles en edades de 3 a 13 años, así como las correlaciones genéticas edad-edad en un ensayo con 42 familias de polinización libre. En el ensayo se incluyeron dos grupos de poblaciones, un grupo del Sur de México y otro de Centroamérica. En ambas características se presentó una amplia variación genética, tanto entre grupos como entre familias dentro de grupos. La heredabilidad individual para la altura total y el diámetro a la base del fuste varió de 0.31 a 0.54 con la edad, y a nivel de familia, de 0.71 a 0.83. Además se encontró una fuerte correlación genética entre la altura y el diámetro a la base (rGxy = 0.90) a los 13 años de edad, por lo que al utilizar la altura o el diámetro como criterio de selección a esa edad, se obtiene prácticamente la misma respuesta. Las correlaciones genéticas edad-edad para las características evaluadas a diferentes edades (3, 4, 5 y 13 años) fueron altas en general y ascendentes con el tiempo (de 0.72 a 0.78 para altura y de 0.75 a 0.85 para el diámetro). Debido a lo anterior, la selección temprana (a los 3 años de edad) tendría una eficiencia cercana a 60 % con respecto a la respuesta de la selección directa a los 13 años de edad.

Se estudió la estructura de la diversidad genética en 15 loci isoenzimáticos de 19 poblaciones naturales de Pinus greggii Engelm. con la finalidad de determinar el grado de variabilidad genética de la especie y el nivel de diferenciación genética existente entre sus poblaciones. Los resultados mostraron que existe una amplia diversidad genética en la especie (93 % de loci polimórficos, 3.5 alelos por locus), pero esa diversidad es relativamente baja a nivel de poblaciones (31.9 % de loci polimórficos y 1.6 alelos por locus), con una proporción elevada de alelos raros (47 %) y alelos “privados” (23 %) en ellas. Aunque se encontró una alta diferenciación genética entre las poblaciones (Fst = 0.379), esta diferenciación no estuvo asociada a las regiones geográficas (2 %), a diferencia del patrón geográfico reportado para las características morfológicas y de crecimiento de los árboles. Las distancias genéticas promedio entre pares de poblaciones fueron similares en las dos regiones geográficas; sin embargo, sólo en la región norte se encontró una correlación positiva y significativa (r = 0.48) entre las distancias genéticas y geográficas de las poblaciones.

Cedrela odorata L. es una de las especies forestales de mayor valor económico en los bosques tropicales de México. A pesar de su potencial para plantaciones comerciales, se desconoce el nivel de variación genética en características relacionadas con la productividad de la especie. En el presente trabajo se estimaron los parámetros genéticos asociados a características del crecimiento de los árboles (altura, diámetro de altura de pecho –DAP-, volumen e índice de conicidad del fuste) y la respuesta esperada bajo diferentes escenarios de selección, con el propósito de evaluar la posibilidad de iniciar un programa de domesticación de la especie en México. Se utilizaron plantas de cinco años de edad correspondientes a 42 familias de polinización libre, cuya semilla fue colectada en siete localidades del sureste mexicano, y establecidas en un ensayo de progenies en el Campo Experimental “El Palmar”, Ver. En todas las características de crecimiento evaluadas se encontró variación significativa entre familias (P≤0.01). La heredabilidad individual y de familias estimada para la altura fue mayor (h2i =0.65; h2f =0.62) que para volumen del fuste (h2i =0.54; h2f =0.59), DAP (h2i=0.38; h2f =0.59) o índice de conicidad del tronco (h2i =0.38; h2f =0.51), especialmente a nivel individual. Las altas correlaciones genéticas entre estas características (rA≥0.90), además de la mayor heredabilidad estimada, sugieren que la selección a los cinco años de edad con base en la altura puede ser más eficiente para mejorar el crecimiento en volumen y la forma del tronco, que la selección directa. Las ganancias genéticas esperadas en volumen fueron similares (alrededor de 50 %) en los dos escenarios de selección comparados (selección masal y selección familial), y dado que la ganancia es alta existe un amplio potencial para aumentar la productividad en esta población mediante mejoramiento genético.

Esta investigación se realizó en la región hulera del Papaloapan, en el Estado de Oaxaca, México, con el objetivo de generar una ecuación para predecir la producción de látex del clon IAN-710 de Hevea brasiliensis Müll. Arg. Se utilizó información dasométrica de 1562 árboles provenientes de 82 sitios temporales de muestreo de plantaciones comerciales de este clon, de entre 7 y 42 años de edad. Las principales variables asociadas con la producción de látex fueron el diámetro normal (a 1.30 m), la altura total y la edad de los árboles. Se compararon tres modelos de los tipos: variable combinada generalizada de forma cuadrática, logarítmica generalizada, gamma incompleta de forma exponencial, con una o más de las variables anteriormente mencionadas. La ecuación que tuvo uno de los mejores ajustes (R2 = 0.8755) para la predicción de la producción de látex (P), fue el modelo de la gamma incompleta de forma exponencial (P=β0 dβ1 e-β2d) con base en el diámetro normal (d) y con una desviación estándar de 0.1239. La producción comercial de látex inicia con 1.561 kg/árbol x año, se incrementa hasta alcanzar un máximo de 2.446 kg/ árbol x año en árboles de 25 cm de diámetro; luego inicia su declinación gradual hasta 1.065 kg/ árbol x año en árboles con diámetro de 49 cm. La vida útil de la plantación es de 30 años de edad.

Ongoing climate variability strongly affects high-elevation forests, influencing the wood formation process (e.g., xylogenesis). Furthermore, spatio-temporal studies to establish links of wood properties and tree performance are needed. Using linear mixed-effects models, empirical cumulative distribution functions, and spatial analysis, we explore time trends and space connections of wood density of Pinus hartwegii Lindl. to remotely sensed variables (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer MODIS-derived) in two high-elevation forests in M&eacute, xico, Tl&aacute, loc (TLA) and Jocotitl&aacute, n (JOC) Mountains. Results indicated that elevation and cambial age effects are important factors explaining wood density variation. Minimum earlywood&mdash, MID, average&mdash, AVE, and maximum latewood density&mdash, MXD were statistically similar between mountains (p &gt, 0.05), but TLA showed a significant increase in MID over time with higher values after 1950. Wood density values and spatial correlations were site-dependent with TLA exhibiting the highest correlations between MXD and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) of the spring season (r = 0.59, p &lt, 0.05). Overall, correlations to remotely sensed information were positive with MXD, negative for MID and divergent for AVE. Historical temperature defines MID along the elevation gradient, while MXD was related to soil moisture only at low-elevation sites where soils are deeper. We found that two high-elevation forests, 115 km away from each other, with similar climate, soil, and vegetation, behaved differently regarding their xylogenesis, indicating the potential of using the link between wood micro-density and remotely sensed information to understand forest response to climate change effects.

El enraizado de estacas es una alternativa para la clonación masiva de árboles seleccionados, con características deseables y superiores para plantaciones comerciales. Sin embargo, la capacidad de enraizado disminuye rápidamente a los 2 o 3 años de edad en especies de coníferas. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la capacidad de enraizamiento de estacas de plantas madre de Pinus patula de 15 y 18 meses de edad, con diferente dosis de fertilización y condición de crecimiento (manejo), y con la aplicación de 5000 × 10-6 (5000 ppm) de ácido indol-3-butírico (AIB) en solución líquida o con el producto comercial Radix® en pasta. A las 14 semanas de establecido el ensayo se evaluó el porcentaje de supervivencia, estacas con callo y raíces, así como el número, longitud de raíces primarias y presencia de raíces secundarias. Se encontraron efectos significativos (p ≤ 0.05) en los factores evaluados y en su interacción. La aplicación de AIB en solución durante 10 s o 20 s ocasionó el mayor porcentaje de enraizamiento (> 25%), 2-3 veces más que el testigo (8.5%). La fertilización de la planta madre con 7 g L-1 de Osmocote® bajo malla sombra provocó una mortalidad elevada de las estacas (30%). No se encontraron diferencias en longitud de raíz más larga, ni en longitud promedio de raíces primarias. La combinación de planta madre de 18 meses con fertilización de 5 g L-1 de Osmocote® en invernadero y la aplicación de AIB en solución líquida por 20 s produjo 73.8% de enraizado, valor aceptable en un programa operativo de clonación de Pinus patula.

Hesperocyparis guadalupensis S. Watson es un especie endémica de Isla Guadalupe en proceso de recuperación después de la erradicación de la cabra feral (Capra hircus). En 2019 se establecieron cinco sitios de muestreo (400 m2) en tres distintas coberturas de dosel: baja (CB, ≤ 5 %), media (CM, 6-23 %) y alta (CA, ≥ 24 %) con el objetivo de evaluar su efecto sobre la dinámica de la repoblación y en la diversidad vegetal del sotobosque. Se obtuvo información de altura del árbol (A) y diámetro a la altura de pecho (DAP) de individuos juveniles (altura mínima de 1.5 y máxima de 10 m) y de la diversidad del sotobosque; además, se establecieron cuatro sub-sitios de 1 m2 por sitio de muestreo, donde se registró el número de plántulas con altura menor de 1.5 m. El nivel de cobertura del dosel no influyó en el número de juveniles, pero el número de plántulas fue mayor en CA (P = 0.003). Se identificaron tres categorías de altura (2.5, 4.5 y 6.5 m) y tres de diámetro (2.5, 7.5 y 12.5 cm) en la población; la mayor frecuencia de individuos se registró en las categorías menores (2.5 y 4.5 m de altura, 2.5 y 7.5 cm de diámetro), especialmente en CM y CA. En CB se encontró una distribución espacial uniforme [L(t) < 0], mientras que en CM y CA la distribución espacial fue agrupada [L(t) > 0]. En el sotobosque se registraron 24 especies correspondientes a 21 géneros y 12 familias, sin diferencias estadísticas significativas entre las coberturas del dosel en riqueza diversidad alfa del sotobosque. Al menos 60 % de las especies del sotobosque se comparten en las tres condiciones de dosel (diversidad beta). La estructura vertical y horizontal de juveniles y plántulas confirma la recuperación del bosque al mostrar un aumento de individuos en categorías bajas, con una distribución espacial asociada con la apertura de claros pequeños que fomentan la germinación y reclutamiento de nuevos individuos a la población.

The Ecuadorian Government has, since the end of 2011, promoted an initiative for using pure jatropha oil, derived from the seeds of Jatropha curcas L., to generate electricity to supply Floreana Island (one of the Galapagos Islands). In the present study, nine elite accessions of J. curcas from tropical dry forests in Ecuador were cultivated for the purpose of evaluating seed production in relation to the propagation method used (seed, cutting). A split-plot design with three replicates was applied. Seed production, measured over a period of 7 years (2009–2015) showed a large year-to-year variation. However, seed production varied significantly among accessions and depended on the propagation method (seeds or cuttings). Propagation by stem cuttings stabilized the variability in the vegetative and seed production components measured, increasing the strength of their relationships with seed yield. The three highest yielding accessions produced 0.28–0.30 kg of seeds tree−1 year−1. As seed yield was not correlated with annual precipitation, the year-to-year variation in production of accessions indicates the effect of other factors not considered here, such as agronomic practices. The study findings suggest that agroforestry practices could be developed that would enable J. curcas to play a predominant role in a strategy for tropical dry forests aimed at reducing poverty (also known as pro-poor growth strategy).

Introducción: Las plantas deben someterse a un proceso de endurecimiento en el vivero para mejorar la supervivencia de las plantaciones forestales en áreas degradadas. Objetivo: El efecto de tres niveles de riego se evaluó en la etapa de endurecimiento sobre algunas variables morfológicas y fisiológicas de Pinus oaxacana . Materiales y métodos: Los tratamientos evaluados fueron tres niveles de riego más un testigo. El riego se realizó cuando los tubetes reducían su peso de saturación 30 % (frecuente), 40 a 45 % (medio) y 45 a 50 % (escaso); en el testigo, el riego se aplicó cada dos o tres d ías . El experimento se estableció en un diseño de bloques completos al azar; cada tratamiento constó de 100 plantas. Resultados y discusión: Los indicadores morfológicos con diferencias significativas ( P ≤ 0.05) entre tratamientos fueron diámetro del cuello de la raíz, peso seco de vástago y peso seco total. Los indicadores fisiológicos mediante la prueba de potencial de crecimiento de raíz no presentaron diferencias significativas. Las plantas con riego frecuente obtuvieron el mayor diámetro, peso seco del vástago y peso seco total. Conclusión: Una reducción del riego entre 30 a 45 % en P. oaxacana permite la producción de plantas endurecidas, con mayor posibilidad de éxito al momento de su trasplante en campo.

Uno de los dos grandes rubros de la valoración económica en el ámbito de los servicios ambientales asociados con recursos naturales es la valoración con mercado. Como su nombre lo indica, esta valoración utiliza información que se genera en el proceso de intercambio del bien o servicio valorado. El presente documento contiene un esfuerzo de este tipo de valoración, desde el punto de vista financiero, del cedro rojo (Cedrela odorata L.) en México. En este ejercicio se aplicó el método de precios de mercado para determinar el valor monetario de su principal uso (maderable), considerando el volumen de madera de la especie existente en los bosques naturales, con base en información generada a partir de las bases de datos del inventario nacional forestal. El efecto del volumen de madera, el precio y el costo del transporte sobre el valor total se evaluó mediante un análisis de sensibilidad. El valor maderable estimado de los árboles en pie asciende a la cantidad de MXN$5 282 183 404 (USD $288 328 788, a precios de mayo de 2016). De las tres regiones consideradas en esta valoración, la región Golfo de México es la de mayor aportación. De acuerdo con el análisis de sensibilidad realizado, el precio de la madera es el principal factor que afecta el valor maderable de la especie.

Jatropha seed is a biomass suitable for bioenergy production that can be produced by smallholders, even on marginal lands. However, the current oilseed production is too low to meet the needs of the planned renewable electricity system in the Galapagos Islands. Pruning and fertilization are management options that can be used to increase the dry seed yields. The effects of both treatments were tested in a split-plot design with jatropha trees, which were monitored during a three-year production period. The average seed production was 643±58 kg ha-1 year-1 in the unpruned trees and 696±50 kg ha-1 year-1 in the pruned trees. Although this difference is small, it is expected to increase over time. The pruned trees developed more slowly than the unpruned trees but showed higher (and still increasing) yields at the end of the three-year test period, while the unpruned trees appeared to have reached their maximum production by the second year of the trial. The low fertilizer doses approved by the smallholders did not have a significant impact on the dry seed yield, and the management options that show benefits in the long term are generally not accepted or adopted by them. Cost-effective nutrient enhancement should be investigated, such as inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. RESUMEN La semilla de jatropha es una biomasa adecuada para la producción de bioenergía que pueden producir los pequeños agricultores, incluso en tierras marginales. Sin embargo, actualmente la producción es demasiado baja para satisfacer las necesidades del sistema de electricidad renovable planificado en las Islas Galápagos. La poda y la fertilización son opciones de manejo que pueden utilizarse para aumentar los rendimientos de semillas secas. Se probaron los efectos de ambos tratamientos en un diseño de parcelas divididas con árboles de jatropha, que se monitorearon durante un período de producción de tres años. La producción promedio de semillas fue de 643±58 kg ha-1 año-1 en los árboles sin podar y 696±50 kg ha-1 año-1 en los árboles podados. Aunque esta diferencia es pequeña, se espera que aumente con el tiempo. Los árboles podados se desarrollaron más lentamente que los árboles sin podar, pero mostraron rendimientos más altos (con potencial de seguir aumentado) al final del periodo de prueba de tres años, mientras que los árboles sin podar parecían haber alcanzado su producción máxima para el segundo año de la prueba. Las bajas dosis de fertilizante probadas por los pequeños agricultores no tuvieron un impacto significativo en el rendimiento de la semilla seca y las opciones de manejo forestal que suponen beneficios a largo plazo generalmente no son aceptadas o adoptadas por ellos. Se deben investigar otras fuentes rentables de mejora de nutrientes, como la inoculación de los árboles con hongos micorrízicos arbusculares.

Geographical distribution of forest species is closely regulated by environmental conditions, particularly temperature and precipitation. Climate change predicted by general circulation models is expected to modify the distribution of many species' distribution, especially those adapted to extreme environmental conditions, leading to large-scale migrations or local extinctions. The aim of this research was to determine the potential impact of climatic change on Pinus hartwegii geographic distribution and the niche breadth of its populations. Ecological niche models were used by generated with four different algorithms based on 19 bioclimatic variables in addition to altitude. Climatic niche breadth was delimited by the dispersion of species occurrence records within the intervals of the bioclimatic variables. We modelled future distribution based on three general circulation models, MIROC-ESM-CHEM, CCSM4 and HadGEM2-ES, using two representative concentration pathways (RCP) 2.6 and 8.5, for two-time horizons 2050 and 2070. Niche breadth analysis showed narrow ranges of suitability, indicating a strong relationship between the presence of P. hartwegii with the temperature of the warmest quarter and precipitation of the coldest quarter. In addition, the suitability area of P. hartwegii is predicted to be reduced up to 70% by 2070; the populations of the extreme northern and southern latitudes will be reduced in greater proportion than those of central Mexico. This suggest that environmental suitability area of P. hartwegii are reduced by the effect of the increase in environmental temperature. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor extreme populations of this species in the long term in order to establish efficient conservation strategies and well adaptive management facing climate change.

El pinabete (Pseudotsuga menziesii) es una conífera valiosa para la producción de árboles de navidad, lo que requiere un abasto continuo de semilla. El límite austral de la distribución natural de esta especie se ubica en México, donde se desconoce el momento adecuado para la colecta de los conos que garantice la máxima calidad de semillas. En este estudio se hicieron tres colectas cada 15 d a partir de la última semana de septiembre, en 52 árboles de tres rodales naturales de pinabete en los Estados de Hidalgo y Tlaxcala. Se evaluó color, densidad relativa y contenido de humedad de los conos como criterios de maduración, que variaron con las fechas de colecta. Las características de peso unitario de semilla, peso seco de cono y relación entre estas dos, no difirieron significativamente entre fechas de colecta ni con los indicadores de maduración. La apertura de los conos en la etapa de beneficio es ligeramente más fácil con conos colectados en la última fecha, cuando los conos cambian de color verde a café. La capacidad y velocidad de germinación fue similar entre las fechas de colecta y entre las categorías de los criterios de maduración usados, y varió de 22 a 30 % entre poblaciones; la colecta más temprana de todos los sitios tuvo menor germinación. En las localidades de Pseudotsuga menziesii del centro de México es posible colectar conos hasta cuatro semanas antes de la dispersión de la semilla de buena calidad (finales de septiembre), aunque el beneficio de la semilla es ligeramente más difícil.

El flujo de polen de poblaciones naturales a huertos semilleros tiene un efecto negativo en la calidad genética del germoplasma producido. El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar el potencial de flujo genético de rodales naturales vecinos a un huerto semillero clonal de Pinus patula. En 2014 y 2015 se establecieron trampas para capturar polen en el centro y periferia del huerto y en rodales naturales en un transecto altitudinal en Aquixtla, Puebla, México. Con las curvas de polen capturado se estimó el total dispersado por unidad de superficie (granos de polen cm-2), las fechas y la duración del periodo de dispersión. También se analizó la relación del periodo de dispersión con la temperatura, precipitación y grados-día. El polen capturado en el huerto fue 1,5 veces mayor y el periodo de dispersión inició una semana antes que en los rodales naturales en ambos años. En 2015, el número de granos de polen cm-2 aumentó al doble y el periodo de dispersión se retrasó. En la parte central del huerto hubo 74 % más polen que en la periferia y su periodo de dispersión se retrasó uno a tres días. En los rodales naturales no se observó un patrón altitudinal en la dispersión de polen. Las diferencias entre años en la fenología de dispersión se relacionaron con los grados-día acumulados y con la variación en temperatura máxima y precipitación. Los resultados señalan riesgos de contaminación genética en el huerto, pero estos son menores en el centro que en la periferia.

Pinus patula Schiede ex Schltdl. et Cham. es un pino endémico de México, ampliamente utilizado en plantaciones comerciales en varios países. La propagación masiva de materiales mejorados de esta especie mediante el enraizado de estacas, proporciona la oportunidad para aumentar y uniformar su productividad. Se comparó el sustrato (perlita vs. mezcla de turba con vermiculita), edad de planta madre (12, 18 y 24 meses) y dosis de ácido indolbutírico (AIB) (0, 5000 y 10 000 ppm) (i.e., mg L-1) en el enraizado de estacas de P. patula, mediante un arreglo factorial en diseño experimental de bloques completos al azar. La supervivencia, enraizado, número y longitud de raíces, presencia de raíces secundarias y desarrollo de callo se evaluaron después de 14 semanas. En el sustrato con perlita se presentó el mayor porcentaje de enraizado de las estacas (21.4 vs. 14.7 %) y fue evidente el efecto de la dosis de AIB y edad de planta madre en la respuesta de las estacas. La capacidad de enraizado se redujo casi a la mitad (de 29.2 a 15.8 % en el sustrato de perlita) al aumentar de 12 a 24 meses la edad de las plantas madre. El AIB inhibió la formación de raíces en las estacas de menor edad, pero no en las de 24 meses. El control de los factores evaluados permitió obtener más de 50 % de enraizado en uno de los tratamientos, valor aceptable en un programa operativo de clonación.

Se evaluó un método empírico para calcular el volumen en muestras pequeñas de madera obtenidas con taladro de Pressler, que se utilizan en la estimación de la densidad básica de la madera y se comparó dicha estimación con otros métodos de uso común en la estimación de la densidad básica de la madera, como son el método de desplazamiento en agua y el método de máximo contenido de humedad. Los valores promedio, de desviación estándar, mínimo y máximo, de densidad de la madera obtenidos con el método empírico fueron muy semejantes a los obtenidos con los otros dos métodos, y la correlación simple que se presentó fue cercano a la unidad, por lo que el método empírico es altamente confiable, rápido y sencillo en la estimación de la densidad en muestras pequeñas de madera, que tienen forma geométrica regular.
