Abstract: We report the observation of the Ξ c ∗+ state decaying into Ξc0π+ with Ξ c 0 →Λ K 0 π + π − or ΛK−π+π+π−. We have observed 47±11 candidate events for the Ξ c ∗+ state and measured its mass to be 177.1±0.5±1.1 MeV/ c 2 above the Ξc0 mass. We have also measured the Ξc0 mass to be 2470.0±2.8±2.6 MeV/ c 2 .

Abstract: New measurements of the lifetime and mass of the Ξ c + are presented. The Ξ c + has been reconstructed through the two decay channels Ξ − π + π + and Σ + K − π + . The data were accumulated by the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687. The lifetime is measured to be 0.34 +0.07 −0.05 (stat.)±0.02 (syst.) ps while the mass is measured to be 2465.8±1.9 (stat.)±2.5 (syst.) MeV/c 2 .

Abstract: An amplitude analysis of the D+, Ds+ → π−π+π+ Dalitz plots is presented using data collected by the Fermilab high-energy photoproduction experiment E687. The data are fitted to a model consisting of a sum of relativistic Breit-Wigner amplitudes for the intermediate two-body resonant decay modes plus a flat non-resonant contribution. From the fit we derive decay fractions and relative phases. We also present measurements of Γ(D + →π − π + π + ) Γ(D + →K − π + π + ) and Γ(D s + →π − π + π + ) Γ(D s + →K − K + π + ) .

Abstract: Charged hadronic five-body decays of D + and D s + mesons have been studied in the E687 photoproduction experiment at Fermilab. We report the first compelling evidence of the decay mode D + , D s + → π − π − β + π + π + and the measurements of the decays D + → K − π − π + π + π + , D s + → K − K + π − π + π + and D s + → φπ − π + π + . An analysis of the D + → K − π − π + π + π + resonance structure is also presented.

Abstract: We report on the results of a search for fourteen flavor changing neutral current, lepton number violating, or lepton family number violating decays of the charmed meson D + in the large charm sample recorded by the Fermilab photoproduction experiment E687. No evidence is seen for these rare and standard-model-forbidden decays, of the form D + → h ± l ∓ l + (with h = π , K and l = e , μ ); we determine 90% confidence level upper limits on their absolute branching fractions in the range (9–20) × 10 −5 .

Abstract: We report on the first statistically significant observation of the vector meson Cabibbo suppressed semileptonic decay D+ → ρ0μ+ν. We measure the branching ratio of the decay mode D+ → ρ0μ+ν (plus possible unobserved γ from D+ → η′μ+ν, η′ → γρ0) with respect to the decay mode D + → K ∗0 μ + ν to be BR (D + → ρ 0 μ + ν) BR (D + → K ∗0 μ + ν) = 0.079 ± 0.019 ( stat ) ± 0.013 ( syst ) . Data were collected by Fermilab photoproduction experiment E687.

Abstract: Results for the Cabibbo suppressed semileptonic decays D 0 → π − e + ν and D 0 → π − μ + ν (charge conjugates are implied) are reported by Fermilab photoproduction experiment E687. We find 45.4 ± 13.3 events in the electron mode and 45.6 ± 11.8 in the muon mode. The relative branching ratio BR (D 0 →π − l + v) BR (D 0 →K − l + v) for the combined sample is measured to be 0.101 ± 0.020 (stat.) ± 0.003 (syst.) 14 .

Abstract: We report measurements of charm particle production asymmetries from the Fermilab photoproduction experiment E687. An asymmetry in the rate of production of charm versus anticharm particles is expected to arise primarily from fragmentation effects. We observe statistically significant asymmetries in the photoproduction of D+, D ∗+ and D0 mesons and find small (but statistically weak) asymmetries in the production of the Ds+ meson and the Λc+ baryon. Our inclusive photoproduction asymmetries are compared to predictions from nonperturbative models of charm quark fragmentation.

Abstract: We report on the study of charm baryons decaying to Λ c + : Λ c ★+ (2625) → Λ c + π + π − , Λ c ★+ (2593) → Λ c + π + π − , Σ c 0 → Λ c + π − and Σ c ++ → Λ c + π + . We present a confirmation of the state Λ c ∗+ (2593) and determine its mass difference to be M ( Λ c ★+ (2593)) − M ( Λ c + ) = 309.2 ± 0.7 ± 0.3 MeV/ c 2 . We determine the lower limit on the resonant branching ratio to be BR (Λ c ★+ (2593) → Σ c π ± Λ c ★+ (2593) → Λ c + π + π − ) > 0.51 (90% c.l.). We also measure the mass differences M ( Σ c 0 ) − M ( Λ c + ) = 166.6±0.5±0.6 MeV/ c 2 and M ( Σ c ++ ) − M ( Λ c + ) = 167.6±0.6±0.6 MeV/ c 2 . Finally, we measure the relative photoproduction cross sections for Λ c ★+ and Σ c with respect to the (inclusive) photoproduction cross section for Λ c + .

Abstract: Fermilab high-energy photoproduction experiment E687 provides a high statistics sample of the decay mode D + → K ∗0 μ + ν (charge conjugates are implied). Our analysis yields a branching ratio of Γ (D + → K ∗0 μ + ν) Γ (D + → K − π + π + ) = 0.56±0.04±0.06 . The ratios of the form factors governing the decay are measured to be R ν = 1.74 ±0.27±0.28 and R 2 = 0.78±0.18±0.10, implying a polarization of Γ l Γ t = 1.20±0.13 ±0.13 for the electron decay. Finally, we report new limits on the decay modes D + → K − π + μ + ν (nonresonent) and D + → K ∗0 π 0 μ + ν .

Abstract: We report the results of a search for the doubly Cabibbo suppressed decays D+ → K+K−K+ and D+ → ΦK+, and the singly Cabibbo suppressed decays Ds+ → K+K−K+ and Ds+ → ΦK+. Our measurements are all consistent with zero branching ratio, and we set 90% confidence level upper limits on the relative D+ branching ratios: BR(ΦK + ) BR(Φπ + ) , BR(K + K − K + ) BR(Φπ + ) and BR(K + K − K + ) BR(K − π + π + ) , and the relative Ds+ branching ratios: BR(ΦK + ) BR(Φπ + ) and BR(K + K − K + ) BR(Φπ + ) . The data were accumulated by the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687.

Abstract: Branching ratios and upper limits at 90% confidence level for D+ and Ds+ → K+π−π+ decays collected in Fermilab photoproduction experiment E-687 are reported. The D+ results are: Γ(D + → K + π − π + ) Γ(D + → K − π + π + ) = (7.2 ± 2.3 ± 1.7) × 10 −3 , Γ(D + → K ∗0 (892)π + ) Γ(D + → K − π + π + ) , and Γ(D + → K + ϱ 0 (770)) Γ(D + → K − π + π + ) . The Ds+ results are: Γ(D s + → K + π − π + ) Γ(D s + → Φ(1020)π + ) = 0.28 ± 0.06 ± 0.05 , Γ(D s + → K ∗0 (892)π + Γ(D s + → Φ(1020)π + ) = 0.18 ± 0.05 ± 0.04 , and Γ(D s + → K + ϱ 0 (770)) Γ(D s + → Φ(1020)π + ) .

Abstract: We present the first measurement of the lifetime of the Ω c 0 baryon. The data were collected in the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687. The measured lifetime is τ = 86−20+27(stat.) ± 28(syst.) fr. Thus the Ω c 0 has one of the shorter lifetimes among the weakly decaying singly charmed baryons.

Abstract: Amplitude analyses of the D+ and Ds+ → K+K−π+ Dalitz plots are presented using data collected by the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687. Our data are fit to a model consisting of a sum of Breit-Wigner amplitudes for the intermediate two-body resonant decay modes. We extract decay fractions and relative phases. These results are used to infer new branching ratios for D+ → K+K−π+ inclusive as well as the Φπ+ and K ∗ (892) 0 K + channels.

Abstract: We have measured the branching ratio for ${\mathit{K}}_{\mathit{L}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ using our full data set obtained during running periods in 1988, 1989, and 1990. The total number of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ candidates after a background subtraction is 707, which represents the largest sample to date of this rare decay mode. Our result is B(${\mathit{K}}_{\mathit{L}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$)=(6.86\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.37)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}9}$, which is consistent with earlier results and very near the unitarity bound. The upper limit on B(${\mathit{K}}_{\mathit{L}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$) is used to set an upper limit on the real part of the amplitude scrA(${\mathit{K}}_{\mathit{L}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$); this is subsequently used to constrain the top quark mass ${\mathit{m}}_{\mathit{t}}$ and the Wolfenstein parameter \ensuremath{\rho} of the CKM matrix.

Abstract: The branching ratios of D 0 → K 0 K 0 and D0 → Ks0Ks0Ks0 relative to D 0 → K 0 π + π − are reported. The data were accumulated in the 1990–1991 fixed target running period of the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687. Γ (D 0 → K 0 K 0 )/Γ (D 0 → K 0 π + π − is measured to be 0.039±0.013±0.013 and Γ (D 0 →K s 0 K s 0 K s 0 )/Γ (D 0 → K 0 π + π − ) is measured to be 0.035±0.012±0.006. We also measure Γ (D 0 → K 0 π + π − /Γ (D 0 → K − π + ) to be 1.61±0.10±0.15.

Abstract: The new results on charm from E687 photoproduction experiment are presented. They follow from very high statistic measurents and cover a wide variety of physics items in the charm sector. Charm photoproduction studies, very accurate lifetime measurements, analysis of several semi-leptonic decays and hadronic decays are discussed. Particular attention has been devoted to compare E687 results with other experiments.

Abstract: We report the results of a search for [ital CP]-violating decay rate asymmetries ([ital A][sub [ital CP]]) in the charm decay modes [ital D][sup +][r arrow][ital K][sup [minus]][ital K][sup +][pi][sup +], [ital D][sup +][r arrow][ital [bar K]][sup *0][ital K][sup +], [ital D][sup +][r arrow][phi][pi][sup +], and [ital D][sup 0][r arrow][ital K][sup +][ital K][sup [minus]]. Our measurements are all consistent with zero asymmetry: [ital A][sub [ital CP]]([ital KK][pi])=[minus]0.031[plus minus]0.068, [ital A][sub [ital CP]]([ital K][sup *][ital K])=[minus]0.12[plus minus]0.13, [ital A][sub [ital CP]]([phi][pi])=0.066[plus minus]0.086, and [ital A][sub [ital CP]]([ital KK])=0.024[plus minus]0.084. The data were accumulated by the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687.

Abstract: Analysis of three D → Kππ Dalitz plots is presented using data collected by the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687. Our data are fit to a model consisting of a sum of Breit-Wigner amplitudes for the intermediate two-body resonant decay modes and a constant term for the nonresonant contribution. We extract branching fractions and relative phases and compare them to the results obtained in other experiments. Although this model qualitatively reproduces many features of our data, statistically significant discrepancies are observed in some of our fits.

Abstract: The fermilab high-energy photoproduction experiment E687 provides a sample of approximately 90 events of the decay mode D+s→ φμ+ ν. The ratios of the form factors governing the decay are measured to be Rv=1.8±0.9±0.2 and R2= 1.1±0.8±0.1, implying a polarization of Г 1 /Г t = 1.0±0.5±0.1 for the electron decay, consistent with our measurement of the form factor for the decay D + → K ∗0 μ + ν .

Abstract: We report the first observation (103±17 events) of the decay Λ+c → Σ−π+π+ and the charge conjugate. A measurement of the relative branching ratio Г (Λ + c → Σ − π + π + )/Г (Λ + c → Σ + π + π + π − = 0.53±0.15 (stat) ± 0.07 (sys) is also presented.

Abstract: We report precise measurements of the D 0 and D + meson lifetimes by the E687 Collaboration at Fermilab. The measurements have been made using 16000 fully reconstructed decays of the D 0 into the K − π + and K − π + π − π + final states and 9000 decays of the D + into the K − π + π + final state. The lifetimes of the D 0 and D + mesons are measured to be 0.413±0.004±0.003 ps and 1.048±0.015±01011 ps respectively.

Abstract: An observation of an excited ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+\mathrm{*}}$ baryon decaying to ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$, with ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{pK}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$, is presented. We reconstruct 39.7\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}8.7${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+\mathrm{*}}$ baryons with a mass of 340.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3 MeV/${\mathit{c}}^{2}$ above the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$ mass. The upper limit on the resonant branching ratio is B(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+\mathrm{*}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}}_{\mathit{c}}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$)/B(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+\mathrm{*}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$ ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$)36% at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: We report a measurement of the relative branching ratio of two Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes: D 0 → π − π + and D 0 → K − K + . The data were accumulated in the 1990–1991 fixed target run of Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687. The branching ratios of these modes relative to the Cabibbo-allowed decay D 0 → K − π + are also presented. The relative branching ratios are measured to be Γ ( D 0 → KK )/ Γ ( D 0 → ππ ) = 2.53 ± 0.46 ± 0.19, Γ ( D 0 → KK )/ Γ ( D 0 → Kπ ) = 0.109 ± 0.007 ± 0.009, and Γ ( D 0 → ππ )/ Γ ( D 0 → Kπ ) = 0.043 ± 0.007 ± 0.003.

Abstract: In a search for the decay [ital K][sub [ital L]][sup 0][r arrow][ital e][sup +][ital e[minus]], no candidates have been observed. We determine the sensitivity from the detected number of [ital CP]-violating [ital K][sub [ital L]][sup 0][r arrow][pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]] decays and place a 90% confidence level upper limit on the branching ratio of [ital B]([ital K][sub [ital L]][sup 0][r arrow][ital e][sup +][ital e[minus]],[vert bar][ital M][sub [ital K]][minus][ital M][sub [ital e][ital e]][vert bar][lt]6 MeV/[ital c][sup 2])[le]4.1[times]10[sup [minus]11]. This result is a significant improvement over previous measurements, although still above the standard model prediction of 3[times]10[sup [minus]12].

Abstract: We report evidence for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay of the charm baryon Λ c + into the final state pK − K + . The analysis is performed on data collected by high energy photoproduction experiment E687 during the 1990–1991 Fermilab fixed target run. The branching ratio of the decay Λ c + → pK − K + relative to the non-suppressed Λ c + → pK − π + is measured to be BR( pK − K + / pK − π + ) = 0.096 ± 0.029 ± 0.010. Abstract: A precise measurement of the [ital D][sub [ital s]][sup [plus minus]] meson lifetime is reported. The data were accumulated by the high energy photoproduction experiment E687 at Fermilab in the 1990--1991 fixed target run. The measurement has been done using 900 fully reconstructed [ital D][sub [ital s]][sup [plus minus]][r arrow][phi][pi][sup [plus minus]] decays. The lifetime of the [ital D][sub [ital s]][sup [plus minus]] meson is measured to be 0.475[plus minus]0.020[plus minus]0.007 ps.

Abstract: Fermilab high-energy photoproduction experiment E687 measures a branching ratio of Γ ( D S + → φμ + ν ) / Γ ( D S + → φμ + ) = 0.58 ± 0.17 (stat) ± 0.07 (sys). This branching ratio is combined with theoretical inputs to obtain a new measurement of the D S + absolute branching ratio of Γ ( D S + → φμ + ) / Γ ( D S + → all) = 0.031 ± 0.009 (stat 0.005 (sys) ± 0.004 (theoretical).

Abstract: A measurement of the lifetime of the charmed strange baryon [Xi][sub [ital c]][sup 0] is presented. The data were accumulated by the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687. The measurement has been made using 42[plus minus]10 [Xi][sub [ital c]][sup 0][r arrow][Xi][sup [minus]][pi][sup +] decays. The lifetime of the [Xi][sub [ital c]][sup 0] is measured to be 0.101[sub [minus]0.017][sup +0.025][plus minus]0.005 ps and its mass is measured to be 2462.1[plus minus]3.1[plus minus]1.4 MeV/[ital c][sup 2].

Abstract: A precise measurement of the [Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +] lifetime using approximately 1340 fully reconstructed [Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +][r arrow][ital pK][sup [minus]][pi][sup +] and charge conjugate decays is presented. The data were accumulated by the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687. The lifetime of the [Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +] is measured to be 0.215[plus minus]0.016[plus minus]0.008 ps.

Abstract: A search for the decay [ital K][sub [ital L]][sup 0][r arrow][mu][sup [plus minus]][ital e[minus plus]] with significantly increased experimental sensitivity has yielded no events. The 90% confidence level limit on the branching ratio is [ital B]([ital K][sub [ital L]][sup 0][r arrow][mu][sup [plus minus]][ital e[minus plus]])[lt]3.9[times]10[sup [minus]11]. When this data set is combined with earlier data the upper limit is 3.3[times]10[sup [minus]11].

Abstract: The magnetic spectrometer and charged particle tracking system used in Fermilab experiment 687 to study the photoproduction and decay of charm particles are described in detail. The photons are produced by a wideband electron beam which can operate at energies up to 600 GeV/ c . The spectrometer consists of a high resolution silicon microstrip detector, a large aperture dipole magnet, proportional chambers, a second large aperture dipole, and more proportional chambers. Three multi-cell threshold Cherenkov counters provide charged particle identification. The tracking system is capable of resolving the secondary decay vertices of charm and beauty mesons and baryons from the primary interaction vertex. It also determines the invariant mass of the multibody final states of particles containing heavy quarks with excellent resolution. The particle identification system allows one to identify kaons and protons present in these final states clearly. This collection of detectors produces very clean signals for charm particles and permits one to make many cross checks of the apparatus. The performance is illustrated for a variety of charm signals. Of particular interest is a description of the tracking through the silicon microstrip detector and its use in isolating downstream decay vertices. Two complementary approaches to the reconstruction of secondary decay vertices are presented and insight is gained by comparing their strengths and weaknesses.

Abstract: With a significant increase in experimental sensitivity, we have observed an additional 281 {ital K}{sub {ital L}}{sup 0}{r arrow}{mu}{mu} events after a background subtraction of 19{plus minus}6 events. Normalizing this sample to the simultaneous observation of the decay {ital K}{sub {ital L}}{sup 0}{r arrow}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}, we obtain the branching ratio {ital B}({ital K}{sub {ital L}}{sup 0}{r arrow}{mu}{mu})=(7.6{plus minus}0.5(stat){plus minus}0.4(syst)){times}10{sup {minus}9}. Combining these data with our previously published sample containing 87 events yields {ital B}({ital K}{sub {ital L}}{sup 0}{r arrow}{mu}{mu})=(7.0{plus minus}0.5){times}10{sup {minus}9}.

Abstract: We report the measurement of masses and widths of the following [ital L]=1 charm mesons by the E687 Collaboration at Fermilab: a [ital D][sub 2][sup *0] state of mass (width) 2453[plus minus]3[plus minus]2 (25[plus minus]10[plus minus]5) MeV/[ital c][sup 2] decaying to [ital D][sup +][pi][sup [minus]], a [ital D][sub 2][sup *+] state of mass (width) 2453[plus minus]3[plus minus]2 (23[plus minus]9[plus minus]5) MeV/[ital c][sup 2] decaying to [ital D][sup 0][pi][sup +], a [ital D][sub 1][sup 0] state of mass (width) 2422[plus minus]2[plus minus]2 (15[plus minus]8[plus minus]4) MeV/[ital c][sup 2] decaying to [ital D][sup *+][pi][sup [minus]], and a [ital D][sub [ital s]1][sup +] state of mass 2535.0[plus minus]0.6[plus minus]1.0 MeV/[ital c][sup 2] and width [lt]3.2 MeV/[ital c][sup 2] at 90% confidence level, decaying to [ital D][sup *+][ital K][sub [ital s]][sup 0] and [ital D][sup *0][ital K+].

Abstract: Measurements of the mass and lifetime of Ξ c + decaying into Ξ - π + π + are presented. The data were accumulated by the Fermilab high-energy photoproduction experiment E687. The mass of the Ξ c + is measured to be 2464.4 ± 2.0 ± 1.4 MeV/c 2 and the lifetime is measured to be 0.41 +0.11-0.08 ± 0.02 ps

Abstract: A prototype muon polarimeter was built to study the feasibility of measuring the positive muon polarization in the decay K/sub L/ to mu /sup +/ mu /sup -/. The system consisted of alternating layers of extruded-aluminum gas proportional tubes and polarization-retaining absorber plates of either aluminum or marble. Longitudinally polarized positive muons from the stopped muon channel at LAMPF were stopped in the absorber plates where they precessed in a field of 60 G. Decay times were recorded in 100-ns first-in-first-out memories for all wires hit during a 12.8- mu s period centered about the muon stop trigger. The performance of the system was studied for different beam rates and absorber thicknesses. The value of imposing time and spatial cuts on track data to enhance the precession signal was also investigated. The study suggests that the goal of measuring the polarization with a sensitivity of 15% is obtainable. >

Abstract: The masses of the ${K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ have been measured by use of exotic-atom x-ray transitions in Pb and W. The transitions used were free from contaminant nuclear $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays and strong-interaction effects. Two ${K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ transitions and three ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ transitions for each target satisfied these criteria. The results are ${M}_{{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}}=493.636\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.011$ MeV and ${M}_{{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{\ensuremath{-}}}=1197.532\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.057$ MeV. The precision of these measurements is greater than that of any previous experiment. When combined with previous measurements they form a consistent set.

Abstract: A search for the decays {ital K}{sub {ital L}}{sup 0}{r arrow}{mu}e and {ital K}{sub {ital L}}{sup 0}{r arrow}ee has produced no examples of either process. When normalized to the decay {ital K}{sub {ital L}}{sup 0}{r arrow}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}, the 90%-C.L. upper limits on the branching ratios are {ital B}({ital K}{sub {ital L}}{sup 0}{r arrow}{mu}e){lt}2.2{times}10{sup {minus}10} and {ital B}({ital K}{sub {ital L}}{sup 0}{r arrow}ee){lt}3.2{times}10{sup {minus}10}.

Abstract: A muon rangefinder with tracking capabilities has been constructed as part of a search for the rare decay K/sub L/ degrees to mu e in experiment 791 at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The rangefinder consisted of two identical arms, symmetric about the beamline, and was the final detector element in a spectrometer system. Each side of the rangefinder was comprised of 75 slabs of marble and 25 slabs of aluminum, each 7.62-cm thick, covering an acceptance area 225 cm wide by 301 cm high, with a total mass of 160 tons. There were 13 pairs of x- and y-measuring proportional tube planes, providing a nominal +or-10% accuracy measurement of muon momentum. During 850 hours of data collection, efficiency averaged 94%, with 160-ns drift time at 1.5- mu A threshold. For well-identified muon tracks, rangefinder muon identification was 99% efficient when penetration to at least 60% of the depth expected from spectrometer-derived momentum was required. >

Abstract: Concurrent with our search for the decays {ital K}{sub {ital L}}{sup 0}{r arrow}{mu}e and {ital K}{sub {ital L}}{sup 0}{r arrow}ee, we have observed 87 {ital K}{sub {ital L}}{sup 0}{r arrow}{mu}{mu} events. Normalizing this sample to the simultaneous observation of the decay {ital K}{sub {ital L}}{sup 0}{r arrow}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}, we obtain the branching ratio {ital B}({ital K}{sub {ital L}}{sup 0}{r arrow}{mu}{mu}) =(5.8{plus minus}0.6(stat){plus minus}0.4 (syst)) {times}10{sup {minus}9}.
