1. Core and edge modeling of JT-60SA H-mode highly radiative scenarios using SOLEDGE3X–EIRENE and METIS codes

Abstract: In its first phase of exploitation, JT-60SA will be equipped with an inertially cooled divertor, which can sustain heat loads of 10 MW/m2 on the targets for a few seconds, which is much shorter than the intended discharge duration. Therefore, in order to maximize the duration of discharges, it is crucial to develop operational scenarios with a high radiated fraction in the plasma edge region without unacceptably compromising the scenario performance. In this study, the core and edge conditions of unseeded and neon-seeded deuterium H-mode scenarios in JT-60SA were investigated using METIS and SOLEDGE3X–EIRENE codes. The aim was to determine whether, and under which operational conditions, it would be possible to achieve heat loads at the targets significantly lower than 10 MW/m2 and potentially establish a divertor-detached regime while keeping favorable plasma core conditions. In first analysis, an investigation of the edge parameter space of unseeded scenarios was carried out. Simulations at an intermediate edge power of 15 MW indicate that, without seeded impurities, the heat loads at the targets are higher than 10 MW/m2 in attached cases, and achieving detachment is challenging, requiring upstream electron densities at least above 4 × 1019 m−3. This points toward the need for impurity injection during the first period of exploitation of the machine. Therefore, neon seeding simulations were carried out, performing a seeding rate scan and an injected power scan while keeping the upstream electron density at the separatrix at 3 × 1019 m−3. They show that at 15 MW of power injected into the edge plasma, the inner target is easily detached and presents low heat loads when neon is injected. However, at the outer target, the heat fluxes are not lowered below 10 MW/m2, even when the power losses in the edge plasma are equal to 50% of the power crossing the separatrix. Therefore, the tokamak will probably need to be operated in a deep detached regime in its first phase of exploitation for discharges longer than a few seconds. In the framework of core–edge integrated modeling, using METIS, the power radiated in the core was computed for the most interesting cases.

Abstract: International audience; A multi-machine study has been carried out to investigate the impact of a strongly bounded wave propagation domain on the Lower Hybrid current drive, a condition which occurs principally in high aspect ratio tokamaks. In this regime, the condition of kinetic resonance can be far above the upper boundary of the propagation domain, and may not be achieved by the usual toroidal upshift. Therefore no tail of fast electrons can be pulled out from the thermal bulk. Nevertheless, while tokamak plasmas are in principle almost transparent to the wave in this regime so-called "unbridgeable spectral gap", full current drive is well achieved for the two tokamaks considered in this study, TRIAM-1M [H. Zushi, et al., Nucl. Fusion 43 (2003) 1600] and WEST [C. Bourdelle, et al., Nucl. Fusion 55 (2015) 063017], both characterized by a very large aspect ratio R/a > 5.5. The case of the high aspect ratio tokamak HL-2A [Y. Liu et al. Nucl. Fusion 45 (2005) S239] for which the wave propagation domain has also an upper boundary, but close to the resonance condition, is considered by comparison. First principles modeling of the rf-driven current and the fast electron bremsstrahlung using the ALOHA/C3PO/LUKE/R5-X2 chain of codes shows unambiguously that the spectral gap must be already filled at the separatrix in order to reproduce quantitatively observations and some important parametric dependencies. This result is an important milestone in the physics understanding of the Lower Hybrid current drive, highlighting the existence of a powerful and likely universal alternative mechanism to bridge the spectral gap, that is not related to toroidal magnetic refraction. With an initially broad power spectrum, lobes with low parallel refractive indexes that carry most of the plasma current can be absorbed in almost single pass, restoring the full validity of the ray-tracing approximation for describing the propagation of the Lower Hybrid wave in cold plasmas.

Abstract: Achieving a successful plasma current ramp-up in a full tungsten tokamak can be challenging due to the large core radiation (and resulting low core temperature) that can be faced with this heavy metallic impurity if its relative concentration is too high. Nitrogen injection during the plasma current ramp-up of WEST discharges greatly improves the core temperature and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability. Experimental measurements and integrated simulations with the RAPTOR code, complemented with the QuaLiKiz neural network for computing turbulent transport, allow a detailed understanding of the mechanisms at play. Increased edge radiation during this transient phase is shown to improve confinement properties, driving higher core temperature and better MHD stability. This also leads to increased operation margins with respect to tungsten contamination.

Abstract: Alarge superconducting machine, JT-60SA has been constructed to provide major contributions to the ITER program and DEMO design. For the success of the ITER project and fusion reactor, understanding and development of plasma controllability in ITER and DEMO relevant higher beta regimes are essential. JT-60SA has focused the program on the plasma controllability for scenario development and risk mitigation in ITER as well as on investigating DEMO relevant regimes. This paper summarizes the high research priorities and strategy for the JT-60SA project. Recent works on simulation studies to prepare the plasma physics and control experiments are presented, such as plasma breakdown and equilibrium controls, hybrid and steady-state scenario development, and risk mitigation techniques. Contributions of JT-60SA to ITER and DEMOhave been clarified through those studies. Abstract: International audience; We report in this contribution on the development of an analytic model for a selfconsistent determination of the poloidal asymmetry, collisional flux and steady state profile of heavy impurities [1]. The model is compared with nonlinear axisymmetric simulations with the XTOR code [2, 3, 4], and with computations using the drift-kinetic code NEO [5]. An application to Tungsten peaking in the WEST tokamak under Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ICRH) exemplifies the complex balance between accumulation and expulsion forces at play.

7. Core radiative collapse characterisation and integrated modelling in WEST plasmas

Abstract: In the full tungsten environment of WEST, during its first phase of operation, around 25% of the pulses exhibited a rapid central electron temperature collapse. In its first phase, WEST plasmas were mostly heated by lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) and ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH). In this publication, the collapsing pulses are analysed to understand the key actuators at play. Experimentally, an initial slow reduction of central electron temperature due to a density increase is observed, while the central tungsten profile is flat and constant in time. Then, radiative collapse occurs: the core tungsten profile peaks rapidly, at the same time, the central hard x-ray channel measurement decreases indicating a change in core LHCD absorption. Integrated modelling is used to explore the causality chain. To capture the collapse speed, both, tungsten core peaking and reduction of central LHCD absorption are required. When central LHCD power absorption is reduced, core electron and ion temperature profiles flatten which reduces the tungsten neoclassical thermal screening and leads to the observed core tungsten accumulation.

8. Development and Applications of Magnet Module for SYCOMORE CEA System Code

Abstract: In the framework of prospective activities for a demonstration power plant, DEMO will be the next step for fusion energy following ITER tokamak. Some of the key design top-level questions can be addressed using macroscopic system-level codes. Those system codes aim to model the whole fusion plant with all its subsystems and identify the impact of their interactions on the design choices. The code SYstem COde for MOdelling REactors (SYCOMORE) is a modular system code developed to address key questions relevant to the tokamak fusion reactor design by giving a global view of technology and physic domains. Among all components, SYCOMORE provides a representation of the magnet system, which is of importance regarding some factor of merits, e.g., fusion power or cost. SYCOMORE is ultimately coupled with an optimizer, scanning a high number of operation configurations and ranking them along selected merits. This scanning requires fast computation for each scanned point, so the magnets modeling must meet a tradeoff between simplicity and accuracy. In this paper, we describe that the way toroidal field (TF), central solenoid (CS), and poloidal field (PF) systems modeling in SYCOMORE was chosen taking into consideration the driving design criteria used in usual magnet design method (temperature margin, copper maximum temperature during quench, mechanical resilience in stainless steel structural parts, etc). The specificities of the reduced magnet representation chosen approach will be exposed, and the benchmarking of the simplified model of the two main systems (TF and CS) applied on DEMO reactor configuration will be compared with the output of a more sophisticated design method using an elaborated tool (CEA design tool) that is used to establish the CEA design of DEMO magnets. Together with this benchmark, a discussion on the limits of this approach will be conducted. PF system implementation being in an early stage, the winding pack design module will be exposed (with its associated benchmarking part with CEA design tool), but not the part of PF current reconstruction with respect to system features. Parametric explorations of DEMO configurations will be reported along different conceptual choices related to the magnets (e.g., superconductor material and performances, and structure resilience limits), and the impact on the magnet system main design features will be exposed. Main lines of the future development work will also be presented.

Abstract: The ITER Remote Experimentation Centre (REC) project (one of the three sub-projects of the International Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC)) is progressing under the agreement between the Government of Japan and the European Atomic Energy Community for the joint implementation of the Broader Approach (BA) activities in the field of fusion energy research. The objectives of the REC activity are to identify the functions and solve the technical issues for the construction of the REC for ITER at Rokkasho, and to develop the remote experiment system and verify the functions required for remote experimentation by using the Satellite Tokamak (JT-60SA) facilities to facilitate the future exploitation of ITER and JT-60SA. The functions of REC will be tested, and the total system will be demonstrated using JT-60SA and existing facilities in the EU, such as JET and WEST. The hardware of the REC has been prepared in Rokkasho Japan, which has the remote experiment room with a large video wall to show the plasma and operation status, IT equipment and a storage system by the reuse of the Helios supercomputer tape library. A broadband network infrastructure of 10Gbps has been installed connected to SINET5. Using this network system, fast data transfer from ITER to REC was examined in 2016, and the transfer of the data volumes expected for the initial ITER experiments has been demonstrated. A secure remote experimentation system has been developed, using JT-60SA, that has functions for preparing and setting of shot parameters, viewing the status of control data, streaming of the plasma status, data-exchange function of shot events, and monitoring of the facility operation. Remote data analysis techniques, data visualisation software, a documentation management and experiment planning system and numerical simulation codes for the preparation and performance estimation of discharges have also been developed.

Abstract: Upgraded heating and current drive (H/CD) systems have been equipped on the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST). With the upgraded H/CD systems, the operation space of EAST is extended, and the ability to achieve higher performance is improved. In this paper, a 0.5 dimension transport code named Minute Embedded Tokamak Integrated Simulator (METIS) is applied to predict the EAST operation space and to assess the current drive capability of the 4.6 GHz lower hybrid current drive system. Predictive simulation of several EAST scenarios, including steady-state high confinement mode (H-mode), advanced regime, high normalized beta and high electron temperature, are also performed with the available H/CD systems. The simulation results provide a guidance for forthcoming advanced EAST experiments.

Abstract: In order to benchmark predictions for the in vessel tritium inventory in ITER, a survey of fuel retention measured in 4 carbon dominated tokamaks (TEXTOR, ASDEX Upgrade in the 2002–2003 carbon configuration, Tore Supra and JET) was performed, showing retention rates from ∼1 g D/h in TEXTOR (L mode, limiter machine) up to ∼6–12 g D/h in AUG (H mode, divertor machine). A simple scaling used for ITER predictions is applied for comparison with experimental values: (1) estimate of wall fluxes, (2) estimate of the gross carbon erosion, (3) estimate of the net erosion/redeposition assuming a redeposition fraction and (4) estimate of the retention rate using D/C ratio scalings. The validity of each step is discussed, showing that this approach yields the right order of magnitude, but tends to underestimate the experimental values unless a high wall flux, a low local redeposition fraction and/or a high D/C ratio are used.

Abstract: Recent developments and achievements of the EUROfusion Code Development for Integrated Modelling project (WPCD), which aim is to provide a validated integrated modelling suite for the simulation and prediction of complete plasma discharges in any tokamak, are presented. WPCD develops generic complex integrated simulations, workflows, for physics applications, using the standardized European Integrated Modelling (EU-IM) framework. Selected physics applications of EU-IM workflows are illustrated in this paper.

Abstract: To shed some light on the development of the fast m/n = 1/1 precursor to the sawtooth crash and its influence on plasma transport properties in the vicinity of the q = 1 surface, series of dedicated experiments have been conducted on the Tore Supra and TEXTOR tokamaks. It has been concluded that, before a crash, the hot core gets displaced with respect to the magnetic axis, drifts outwards by as much as 8–10 cm and may change its shape. Observation of the magnetic reconnection process has been made by means of electron cyclotron emission diagnostics. The heat pulse is seen far outside the inversion radius. The colder plasma develops a magnetic island on the former magnetic axis, after the hot core expulsion. Different kinds of behaviour of the m = 1 precursor before the crash, with respect to the displacement of the hot core and the duration of the oscillating phase, have been observed. An ideal kink model alone cannot be used for explanation; therefore, resistive effects play an important role in the mode development. Possible mechanisms that lead an m = 1 mode to such behaviour, and their links to the change in the central q-profile, are discussed. Results have been discussed in the light of various theoretical models of the sawtooth.

Abstract: Current diffusion, heat transport modelling, and linear gyrokinetic stability analysis have been carried out on a set of seven hybrid discharges from AUG, DIII-D, JET and JT-60U, in order to gain better understanding of the physics underlying this promising candidate scenario for ITER. Within this dataset, the GLF23 model has a higher accuracy than the Weiland model in predicting the temperature profiles in the region 0.3 < ρ < 0.8. The core heat transport appears to be similar between hybrid discharges and standard H-modes, and also among hybrid discharges with very different H factors. Projections to ITER show that Q = 10 can be obtained with the hybrid scenario using an alternative scaling without β degradation. However, additional off-axis current drive and current profile control might be needed for the ITER hybrid scenario, in order to achieve its full potential for high βN on extended duration.

Abstract: The Tore Supra gigajoule (GJ) scenario was developed during the 2002 experimental campaign, with the goal of realizing long pulses in a stationary state, at a loop voltage therefore close to zero. This challenge has led to very successful results, with a record injected energy of 0.75 GJ and perfect control of the plasma density over 4 min 25 s. The performance is however limited by the lower hybrid system reliability and MHD limits. This paper focuses on the three kinds of MHD activity that were observed in the development of this scenario. The first one, probably a manifestation of the feedback control on the plasma position, is benign and, once triggered, stays at a low level. The second one is the triggering of a fast growing instability, which leads to a strong degradation of the confinement in the core region and to a redistribution of the plasma current. After such events, a regime with a persistent MHD activity sets in and represents the third kind of MHD activity in the GJ experiments. This paper reports on the analysis of this MHD activity. Perspectives for the future development of the GJ scenario in Tore Supra are drawn.

Abstract: The present work has been developed within the frame of the EFDA task “HCD-08-03-01: LH4IT, EU contribution to the ITER LHCD Development Plan” The use of rectangular oversized waveguides in the Main Transmission Lines (MTLs) of the Lower Hybrid Current Drive (LHCD) system of ITER, requires to investigate the problem of bends. The high number of involved waveguides (from 24 to 48) must be also taken into account. Thus, it has to consider not only the best choice in terms of curved framework, but also the proper allocation of all the waveguides. In this context, the principal specifications that characterize the design of the bends are: a) to minimize the reflection of the fundamental TE10 mode; b) to maximize the transmission of the fundamental TE10 mode; c) to minimize the coupling between the TE10 mode and other spurious modes that propagate at 5 GHz. This paper presents an overview about the bend options, and it compares the performances of several frameworks analyzed by using the Finite Element Method (FEM) commercial software, HFSS®. First of all, simple circular trajectory curves with different angulations, are considered. Then, the so called Mitre Bends alternatives are deeply analyzed. These curves are studied by several authors in the mono-modal configuration, with different techniques but the propagation in an oversized environment is a topic not much attended in literature. The only design parameter of the simple circular trajectory bend is the bending radius, so that the design is not flexible; the Mitre Bend structure is at least more flexible than the previous one and it is of great interest to study this type of bend to check the possible advantages. Finally an innovative modified Mitre Bend solution based on a cascade of trapezoidal elements is proposed.

Abstract: In order to assist the design of the future ITER Lower Hybrid launcher, coupling codes ALOHA, from CEA Cadarache, TOPLHA, from Politecnico di Torino, and GRILL3D (Dr.Mikhail Irzak, A.F.Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia), from ENEA Frascati, have been compared with the initial (3 modules with 8 active waveguides per module) and updated (6 modules with 4 active waveguides per module) Passive-Active Multijunction (PAM) Lower Hybrid antennas. Both ALOHA and GRILL3D formulate the problem in terms of rectangular waveguides modes, while TOPLHA is based on boundary-value problem with the adoption of a triangular cell-mesh to represent the relevant waveguides surfaces. Several plasma profiles, with varying edge density and density increase, have been adopted to provide a complete description of the simulated launcher in terms of reflection coefficient, computed at the beginning of each LH module, and of power spectra. Good agreement can be observed among codes for all the simulated profiles.

Abstract: A 20 MW Lower Hybrid Current Drive system using an antenna based on the Passive Active Multijunction (PAM) concept is envisaged on ITER for steady state operation, including the current ramp-up phase. In the frame of an EFDA task, a conceptual design of such a system has been performed. This paper gives an insight of the mechanical analysis, modeling and design carried out on two elements of the antenna: the front face, and the RF windows which constitute the first tritium barrier. The front face of the antenna will have to withstand high heat and fast neutrons fluxes directly from the plasma. It will be actively cooled and present a beryllium coating upon ITER requirement. The main issues were to ensure a reasonable margin versus a maximum temperature fixed by safety concerns (650 °C for plasma facing beryllium), and to understand and assess resistance of the assembly while in operation. Analyses were conducted on some variants of this PAM. Manufacturing scenarios considering ITER requirements and involving various techniques (brazing, high isostatic pressure bonding, explosion bonding) were explored, and simulations over subsequent residual stresses were conducted. Analyses showed that surface temperatures do not exceed 500°C, and stresses should not affect the integrity of the antenna mouth. The RF window is a critical component since it also has a safety function. We planed to design a water cooled 5 GHz CW RF “pillbox” window capable of sustaining 500 kW of transmitted power. An RF optimization conducted on this concept allowed to combine good RF properties and low dielectric losses. It resulted in a maximum thermal stress in the ceramic of 31 MPa, well below the static fatigue limit of 50 MPa. The residual stresses resulting from the brazing methods involved in the manufacturing of this multi-material assembly (copper, copper alloys and ceramic) were also analyzed. Both studies allow us to move forward and focus on critical issues, such as manufacturing processes (beryllium, bonding techniques…) and R&D associated programs including test of mock-ups.

Abstract: A very preliminary design of the Lower Hybrid Current Drive system for ITER was developed in the early years of the 2000's. Many parameters of the system were defined on the base of knowledge and technology of those times. Experimental results obtained in the last few years, like the successful tests of a PAM launcher on FTU and on Tore Supra have definitely indicated this concept as a possible candidate for the LHCD launcher for ITER. The successful development of a prototype klystron at 5GHz with a target RF power of 500kW CW has indicated this power as an upper limit for the present high vacuum electron tubes technology at this frequency. From the physics point of view the ITER operational scenarios have been well defined, while the last experiments have pointed out the effectiveness of the LHCD waves at high plasma density. All these results imposed a revision of the existing design of the LHCD system. The RF power limited to a maximum of 500kW per klystron has determined a new modularity of the whole system and of the PAM launcher. In addition a relatively shorter distance between klystrons and ITER machine suggested the possibility of using rectangular oversized waveguides, excited in the fundamental TE01 mode, for the realization of the Main Transmission Lines (MTLs). Therefore all the main microwave components of the system have been revised on these basis and different and more suitable solutions have been investigated. In particular this paper compares the performances of the two different MTLs, based respectively on circular and rectangular waveguides, describes the main components of the proposed rectangular MTL and analyzes their main microwave characteristics. Companion papers in this Conference cover all the other aspects of the updated design of the LHCD system for ITER. The present revision has been carried out in the frame of the EFDA task “HCD-08-03-01: EU Contribution to the ITER LHCD Development Plan (LH4IT)”.

Abstract: Quasi-steady operation has been achieved at JET in the high-confinement regime with internal transport barriers (ITBs). The ITB has been maintained up to 11 s. This duration, much larger than the energy confinement time, is already approaching a current resistive time. The high-performance phase is limited only by plant constraints. The radial profiles of the thermal electron and ion pressures have steep gradients typically at mid-plasma radius. A large fraction of non-inductive current (above 80%) is sustained throughout the high-performance phase with a poloidal beta exceeding unity. The safety factor profile plays an important role in sustaining the ITB characteristics. In this regime where the self-generated bootstrap current (up to 1.0 MA) represents 50% of the total current, the resistive evolution of the non-monotonic q-profile is slowed down by using off-axis lower-hybrid current drive.

Abstract: We describe a multi-crystal, high-resolution, fully remote-controlled, absolutely calibrated, Johann-type spectrometer for the 1–4 A region. Spectra from the helium- and lithium-like charge states of impurity elements from Ar to Cu are analyzed by least-squares fitting of synthetic spectra. The intrinsic impurity elements Cr and Fe are used for a routine, time-resolved, hands-off diagnostic for electron and ion temperatures, and for toroidal rotation velocities. Impurity densities are obtained from absolute line intensities. Injection of Ar, Ti, Mn, and Ni, is used for transport studies. We have also obtained the precise wavelengths of transitions in neon-like and near-neon-like charge states of Pd and Ag, which are of much interest in atomic physics.

Abstract: Measurements of fast electron bremsstrahlung (FEB) using hard X‐ray (HXR) cameras provide a unique diagnostic for the fast electron dynamics, with resolution in space, time and energy. A synthetic HXR diagnostic is developed to calculate the distribution function and FEB emission, such that experimental results can be directly compared with simulations. Using this comparison, the role of fast electron radial transport in radio‐frequency current drive is investigated. For two cases studied in this paper, the HXR emission is consistent with negligible radial transport, although in one case this is in disagreement with the measured driven current.

Abstract: During the 2002 campaign of the TORE SUPRA tokamak, long pulses with a high fraction of Lower Hybrid Current Drive (∼80 %) have been obtained, leading to a new record of injected energy of 0.75 GJ. Specific phenomena are related to these experiments, like the onset of periodic oscillations of the core electron temperature, which is ascribed to a coupling between current drive and heat transport. In combination with LHCD, a modest amount of Electron Cyclotron (EC) Current Drive power can modify the q profile in the central part of the plasma, which has a significant impact on the behaviour of the discharge. When used in the counter‐current direction, ECCD triggers an electron transport barrier.

Abstract: The magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations in a type-II superconductor are reexamined in view of studying the unstable kink modes in nearly-force-free configurations by taking into account the pinning effects. It appears that at the early stage these modes cannot develop against the pinning forces unless the vortices experience an externally driven Bean-London motion. When the modes have perturbed the driving forces by an amount of the order of the pinning force, they escape the latter and undertake a faster growth determined by the viscosity. However, if the magnetic energy reservoir driving the MHD instabilities is not sufficient to reach that second regime, the considered instabilities may be considered harmless. This finally leads to an estimation of the maximum electrical current that may be carried by a superconducting wire immersed in a parallel magnetic field. This critical current, which may be much larger than the Kruskal-Shafranov limit triggering the kink instabilities in magnetized plasmas, is found to be compatible with experimental data available in the literature.

Abstract: The next step after ITER is the demonstration of stable electricity production with a fusion reactor. Key design performance will have to be met by the corresponding power plant demonstrator (DEMO), fulfilling a large number of constraints. System codes such as SYCOMORE, by simulating all the fusion power plant sub-systems, address these questions. To be able to perform design optimizations, simplified models relying on physical and technological assumptions have to be used, resulting in a large number of input parameters. As these parameters are not always exactly known, the impact of their associated uncertainties on final design performance has to be evaluated. Sensitivity methods, by measuring the relative influence of inputs on the figures of merit of the design, allow the dominant parameters to be selected. This information helps the search for optimal working points, guides the priority for technical improvements and finally allows meaningful inputs for uncertainty propagation to be selected. A full set of sensitivity methods and their application to an ITER and DEMO design will be presented, discussing both the statistical method behaviours and the physical results. Plasma shape parameters (minor radius and plasma elongations) share half of the net electricity power sensitivity for the DEMO 2015 design, while the toroidal magnetic field and the 95% safety factor are responsible for 23% and 17% of the electric power sensitivity, respectively. The plasma minor radius is responsible for 45% of the pulse duration sensitivity for the DEMO 2015 design, while plasma physics parameters drive % of the pulse duration sensitivity. Abstract: In the four-stage approach of the new ITER Research Plan, the first pre-fusion power operation (PFPO) phase will only have limited power available from external heating and current drive (H&CD) systems: 20–30 MW provided by the electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) system. Accessing the H-mode confinement regime at such low auxiliary power requires operating at low magnetic field, plasma current and density, i.e. 1.8 T and 5 MA for a density between 40% and 50% of the Greenwald density. H-mode plasmas at 5 MA/1.8 T will also be investigated in the second PFPO phase when ITER will have its full complement of H&CD capabilities installed, i.e. 20–30 MW of ECRH, 20 MW of ion cyclotron resonance heating and 33 MW of neutral beam injection. This paper describes the operational constraints and the H&CD capabilities for such scenarios in hydrogen and helium plasmas, to assess their viability and the issues it will be possible to address with them. The modelling results show that 5 MA/1.8 T scenarios are viable and will allow the exploration of the H-mode physics and control issues foreseen in the ITER Research Programme in the PFPO phases. Abstract: Auxiliary heating is essential to initiate fusion in future tokamaks. In particular, ion heating tends to maximise the alpha power generation by increasing the thermal ion temperature. In order to simulate the plasma heating by ion cyclotron radio frequency waves, the EVE code, a full wave code for IC wave propagation, and SPOT, an orbit following Monte Carlo code combined with the RFOF library which calculates the absorption of wave by ions, have been coupled together. This new package is used for simulating JET plasmas with strong interplay between ion cyclotron resonant heating and neutral beam injection. Simulations shows that up to 20% of the neutron rate generated in recent JET D plasmas is due to the synergy between both heating mechanisms. However, the H concentration plays a critical role on such interplay, because the synergy efficiency weakens with the H concentration. Abstract: The European fusion research activities have, over recent decades, generated a vast and varied set of data. The volume and diversity of the data that need to be catalogued and annotated make the task of organising and making the data available within a broader environment very challenging. Nevertheless, there are strong scientific drivers as well as incentives and mandates from national research agencies suggesting that a more coherent approach to data referencing, dissemination and sharing would provide strong benefits to the fusion research community and beyond. Here, we discuss the technical requirements and developments needed to transition the current, and future, range of fusion research data to an open and Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable data sharing structure guided by the principle ‘as open as possible, as closed as necessary’. Here we propose a set of recommendations and technical implementations needed to form a European data sharing environment for the fusion research programmes. Consistency with the emerging IMAS (ITER Integrated Modelling and Analysis Suite) infrastructure is considered to facilitate future deployments.

Abstract: Since the last IAEA conference, the scientific programme of JET has focused on the qualification of the integrated operating scenarios for ITER and on physics issues essential for the consolidation of design choices and the efficient exploitation of ITER. Particular attention has been given to the characterization of the edge plasma, pedestal energy and edge localized modes (ELMs), and their impact on plasma facing components (PFCs). Various ELM mitigation techniques have been assessed for all ITER operating scenarios using active methods such as resonant magnetic field perturbation, rapid variation of the radial field and pellet pacing. Abstract: First principle modeling of the lower hybrid (LH) current drive in tokamak plasmas is a longstanding activity, which is gradually gaining in accuracy thanks to quantitative comparisons with experimental observations. The ability to reproduce simulatenously the plasma current and the non-thermal bremsstrahlung radial profiles in the hard x-ray (HXR) photon energy range represents in this context a significant achievement. Though subject to limitations, ray tracing calculations are commonly used for describing wave propagation in conjunction with Fokker–Planck codes, as it can capture prominent features of the LH wave dynamics in a tokamak plasma-like toroidal refraction. This tool has been validated on several machines when the full absorption of the LH wave requires the transfer of a small fraction of power from the main lobes of the launched power spectrum to a tail at a higher parallel refractive index. Conversely, standard modeling based on toroidal refraction only becomes more challenging when the spectral gap is large, except if other physical mechanisms may dominate to bridge it, like parametric instabilities, as suggested for JET LH discharges (Cesario et al 2004 Phys. Rev. Lett. 92 175002), or fast fluctuations of the launched power spectrum or ‘tail’ LH model, as shown for Tore Supra (Decker et al 2014 Phys. Plasma21 092504). The applicability of the heuristic ‘tail’ LH model is investigated for a broader range of plasma parameters as compared to the Tore Supra study and with different LH wave characteristics. Discrepancies and agreements between simulations and experiments depending upon the different models used are discussed. The existence of a ‘tail’ in the launched power spectrum significantly improves the agreement between modeling and experiments in plasma conditions for which the spectral gap is large in EAST and Alcator C-Mod tokamaks. For the Alcator C-Mod tokamak, the experimental evolution of the HXR profiles with density suggests that this model is valid up to a line-averaged density of m−3, a statement that is confirmed by simulations of the HXR scaling law with density. While simulations with GENRAY/CQL3D codes have ascribed the fast decrease of the HXR emission with density to parasitic absorption in the scrape-off layer by collisional damping, an alternative interpretetation based on an enhanced refraction as the LH wave propagates in the vicinity of the X-point is provided by C3PO/LUKE codes. Abstract: Theoretical investigations are performed in order to explain the plasma rotation increments induced by lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) in Tore Supra and the results are compared to the experimental observations. The intrinsic toroidal rotation is governed by several mechanisms in concert. The impact of the LHCD on each involved mechanism is analyzed. The neoclassical toroidal rotation is always in the counter-current direction. The toroidal diamagnetic velocity is of the order of the experimental toroidal velocity. At high plasma current the rotation evolution in the lower hybrid (LH) phase is controlled by the neoclassical friction force due to the trapped ions in banana trajectories through the toroidal diamagnetic velocity. This force results in the counter-current increment as observed in the experimental measurement of toroidal rotation. At low plasma current the rotation is dominated by momentum turbulent transport when the LH waves are applied. The Reynolds stress grows strongly compared to the high plasma current case and acts as a co-current force through its residual stress contribution. Momentum transport simulations are also performed with CRONOS (Artaud et al 2010) in order to assess the rotation increments induced by LHCD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A demonstration power plant (DEMO) will be the next step for fusion energy following ITER. Some of the key design questions can be addressed by simulations using system codes. System codes aim to model the whole plant with all its subsystems and identify the impact of their interactions on the design choices. The SYCOMORE code is a modular system code developed to address key questions relevant to tokamak fusion reactor design. SYCOMORE is being developed within the European Integrated Tokamak Modelling framework and provides a global view (technology and physics) of the plant. It includes modules to address plasma physics, divertor physics, breeding blankets, shield design, magnet design and the power balance of plant. The code is coupled to an optimization framework which allows one to specify figures of merit and constraints to obtain optimized designs. Examples of pulsed and steady-state DEMO designs obtained using SYCOMORE are presented. Abstract: The effect of plasma density on toroidal rotation was examined in density ramp-up experiments at a plasma current of 1 MA and a toroidal magnetic field of 3.6 T in Tore Supra ohmic discharges. Experimental measurements have shown that the toroidal rotation amplitude is reduced at all radii when increasing the plasma density, although it remains in the counter-current direction. Neoclassical predictions including ripple-induced toroidal friction are in qualitative agreement with such observations. However, in the core (r/a < 0.5) the plasma accelerates at nl ∼ 3 × 1019 m−2 and breaks again above nl ∼ 3.5 × 1019 m−2. This rotation bifurcation did not appear to be correlated to a possible influence of the sawtooth activity. Nonetheless, quasi-linear gyrokinetic simulations have shown that the transition of the nature of linear microinstabilities from ITG-TEM to pure ITG occurs at nl ∼ 3 × 1019 m−2, which could indicate a change on the turbulence driven contributions and explain the deviation from neoclassical predictions in the plasma core. Abstract: Electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) at a low power level has been used on Tore Supra to induce local perturbations of the current density profile. Regimes with strong MHD activity have been analysed, and compared with similar stable discharges, in order to investigate the possible causes of their instability and relate the evolution of the discharge to the localization of EC power deposition. Both co- and counter-current drive pulses have been applied to dominantly or fully non-inductive discharges, sustained by a lower hybrid current drive. Detailed reconstructions by current diffusion calculations have been performed and the error bars evaluated. This method has proved valuable for shedding light on the complex interplay between the evolutions of temperature and safety factor profiles in steady-state tokamak plasmas. The crucial role of the dynamic evolution of rational surfaces has been identified. Moreover, we demonstrate that the operational domain in which ECCD can be employed must cope with the overall current profile characteristics, in particular the position where the safety factor has a minimum. Abstract: Superconducting (SC) tokamak JT-60SA plays an essential role in fusion research and development by supporting and complementing the ITER project, providing directions to the DEMO design activity and fostering next generation scientists and engineers. Since the short circuit incident at the terminal joints of equilibrium field coil #1 during the integrated commissioning (IC) in March 2021, both EU and JA implementing agencies (IAs) have examined how to ensure safe operation of JT-60SA by mitigating the risk of possible discharge occurrence inside the cryostat. Based on the experience of the global Paschen tests, the IAs have established a strategy of risk mitigation measures, which is a combination of (i) reinforcement of insulation, (ii) avoiding unnecessary voltage application to the coil systems and (iii) immediate de-energization of the coils when deteriorated vacuum conditions are detected. Thanks to the considerable efforts of the Integrated Project Team members, the IC restarted in May 2023. After confirmation of the SC state of the coil systems (TF, EF and CS), the coil energization test and the plasma operation phase 1 (OP-1) started. The first plasma was successfully achieved on 23 October 2023 with a limited value of voltage and current applied to the coils. The plasma configuration control was also confirmed with low plasma current and low auxiliary heating power conditions. Based on the IO–F4E–QST collaboration, activities of JT-60SA have been shared with the IO and provided an important lesson for ITER assembly and commissioning, and will provide an outstanding contribution to fusion research at large. After OP-1, maintenance & enhancement phase 1 (M/E-1) starts from January 2024, in which in-vessel components are installed, and heating and diagnostic systems are extensively upgraded to allow a high power heating experiment planned in OP-2. In order to make the best use of JT-60SA, a newly organized JT-60SA experiment team will refine the research plan for the future high heating power operation phase.

Abstract: In 2021 JET exploited its unique capabilities to operate with T and D–T fuel with an ITER-like Be/W wall (JET-ILW). This second major JET D–T campaign (DTE2), after DTE1 in 1997, represented the culmination of a series of JET enhancements—new fusion diagnostics, new T injection capabilities, refurbishment of the T plant, increased auxiliary heating, in-vessel calibration of 14 MeV neutron yield monitors—as well as significant advances in plasma theory and modelling in the fusion community. DTE2 was complemented by a sequence of isotope physics campaigns encompassing operation in pure tritium at high T-NBI power. Carefully conducted for safe operation with tritium, the new T and D–T experiments used 1 kg of T (vs 100 g in DTE1), yielding the most fusion reactor relevant D–T plasmas to date and expanding our understanding of isotopes and D–T mixture physics. Furthermore, since the JET T and DTE2 campaigns occurred almost 25 years after the last major D–T tokamak experiment, it was also a strategic goal of the European fusion programme to refresh operational experience of a nuclear tokamak to prepare staff for ITER operation. The key physics results of the JET T and DTE2 experiments, carried out within the EUROfusion JET1 work package, are reported in this paper. Progress in the technological exploitation of JET D–T operations, development and validation of nuclear codes, neutronic tools and techniques for ITER operations carried out by EUROfusion (started within the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and continuing under the Horizon Europe FP) are reported in (Litaudon et al Nucl. Fusion accepted), while JET experience on T and D–T operations is presented in (King et al Nucl. Fusion submitted).

Abstract: Self-consistent transport simulation of ITER scenarios is a very important tool for the exploration of the operational space and for scenario optimisation. It also provides an assessment of the compatibility of developed scenarios (which include fast transient events) with machine constraints, in particular with the poloidal field (PF) coil system, heating and current drive (H&CD), fuelling and particle and energy exhaust systems. This paper discusses results of predictive modelling of all reference ITER scenarios and variants using two suite of linked transport and equilibrium codes. The first suite consisting of the 1.5D core/2D SOL code JINTRAC [1] and the free boundary equilibrium evolution code CREATE-NL [2,3], was mainly used to simulate the inductive D-T reference Scenario-2 with fusion gain Q=10 and its variants in H, D and He (including ITER scenarios with reduced current and toroidal field). The second suite of codes was used mainly for the modelling of hybrid and steady state ITER scenarios.
