The normalized $^{238}$U(n,f)/$^{235}$U(n,f) cross section ratio has been measured using the NIFFTE fission Time Projection Chamber from the reaction threshold to $30$~MeV. The fissionTPC is a two-volume MICROMEGAS time projection chamber that allows for full three-dimensional reconstruction of fission-fragment ionization profiles from neutron-induced fission. The measurement was performed at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center, where the neutron energy is determined from neutron time-of-flight. The $^{238}$U(n,f)/$^{235}$U(n,f) ratio reported here is the first cross section measurement made with the fissionTPC, and will provide new experimental data for evaluation of the $^{238}$U(n,f) cross section, an important standard used in neutron-flux measurements. Use of a development target in this work prevented the determination of an absolute normalization, to be addressed in future measurements. Instead, the measured cross section ratio has been normalized to ENDF/B-VIII.$\beta$5 at 14.5 MeV.

The Neutron Induced Fission Fragment Tracking Experiment (NIFFTE) collaboration is developing a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) to measure neutron-induced fission cross sections with unprecedented accuracy. Modifying TPC technology for nuclear physics applications is a challenging endeavor, and frequent testing and evaluation is required to ensure that all components are behaving as expected. In-beam tests of the NIFFTE TPC at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LAN-SCE) commenced in 2010. An overview of the NIFFTE TPC experiments performed at LANSCE will be presented, along with preliminary performance results.

A fission TPC is being developed to measure the energy-dependent neutron induced fission cross sections of the major and minor actinides to an accuracy of better than 1%. Achieving such an accuracy will depend in part, on the ability of the TPC to provide precise tracking and identification of charged particles. A measurement of the α -decay to spontaneous fission branching ratio of 252 Cf used to benchmark the performance of the TPC will be discussed.

The NIFFTE collaboration has developed a time projection chamber to study neutron-induced fission events in actinide targets by tracking and identifying fission fragments in three dimensions as they traverse a gas volume. This paper will provide an overview of the analysis software that has been developed by the NIFFTE collaboration, as well as examples of its success in analyzing data.

When fully instrumented, the NIFFTE Time Projection Chamber will consist of nearly 6000 channels, each of which requires a preamplifier, ADC, and digital readout. To minimize channel cost and size, the EtherDAQ data acquisition system utilizes off-the-shelf FPGA and Ethernet fiber technology. This application of commercially-available components made it possible to meet the requirements of the DAQ system with considerably less development cost and time than the a customized ASIC solution, and provides considerable flexibility in the final design. The detailed design and current status of the preamplifier and EtherDAQ boards will be discussed.

The general properties needed in targets (sources) for high precision, high accuracy measurements are reviewed. The application of these principles to the problem of developing targets for the Fission TPC is described. Longer term issues, such as the availability of actinide materials, improved knowledge of energy losses and straggling and the stability of targets during irradiation are also discussed.

The Neutron Induced Fission Fragment Tracking Experiment (NIFFTE) is a double-sided Time Projection Chamber (TPC) with micromegas readout designed to measure the energy-dependent neutron-induced fission cross sections of the major and minor actinides with unprecedented accuracy. The NIFFTE project addresses the challenge of minimizing major sources of systematic uncertainties from previous fission chamber measurements such as: target and beam non-uniformities, misidentification of alpha and light charged particles as fission fragments, and uncertainties inherent to the reference standards used. In-beam tests of the NIFFTE TPC at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) started in 2010 and have continued in 2011, 2012 and 2013. We present a novel technique for studying the quenching of shell gaps in exotic isotopes. The method is based on extracting Gamow-Teller (ΔL=0, ΔS=1) transition strengths [B(GT)] to low-lying states from charge-exchange reactions at intermediate beam energies. These Gamow-Teller strengths are very sensitive to configuration mixing between cross-shell orbitals, and this technique thus provides an important complement to other tools currently used to study cross-shell mixing. This work focuses on the N=8 shell gap. We populated the ground and 2.24 MeV 0+ states in 12Be using the 12B(1+) (7Li, 7Be) reaction at 80 MeV/u in inverse kinematics. Using the ground-state B(GT) value from β-decay measurements (0.184±0.007) as a calibration, the B(GT) for the transition to the second 0+ state was determined to be 0.214±0.051. Comparing the extracted Gamow-Teller strengths with shell-model calculations, it was determined that the wave functions of the first and second 0+ states in 12Be are composed of 25±5% and 60±5% (0s)4(0p)8 configurations, respectively.

Gamow‐Teller (GT) transitions are mediated by the στ operator. Owing to its simplicity and also its spin‐isospin nature, GT transitions play key roles in the studies of nuclear structure as well as astro‐nuclear processes. In violent neutrino‐induced reactions at the core‐collapse stage of type II supernovae, Gamow‐Teller (GT) transitions starting from stable as well as unstable pf‐shell nuclei play important roles. We study GT transitions starting from 47Ti in a high‐resolution (3He,t) charge‐exchange reactions at 0° and at an intermediate incident energy of 140 MeV/nucleon at Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Osaka. Individual GT transitions up to high excitations were observed. Assuming the isospin symmetry for the strengths of Tz = ±3/2→±1/2 analogous GT transitions, we can deduce the detailed strength distribution starting from mirror unstable nucleus 47Mn.

The quest for the mutation responsible for Huntington's disease (HD) has required an exceptionally detailed analysis of a large part of 4p16.3 by molecular genetic techniques, making this stretch of 2.2 megabases one of the best characterized regions of the human genome. Here we describe the construction of a cosmid and P1 clone contig spanning the region containing the HD gene, and the establishment of a detailed, high resolution restriction map. This ordered clone library has allowed the identification of several genes from the region, and has played a vital role in the recent identification of the Huntington's disease gene. The restriction map provides the framework for the detailed analysis of a region extremely rich in coding sequences. This study also exemplifies many of the strategies to be used in the analysis of larger regions of the human genome.
