TJ-II stellarator results on modelling and validation of plasma flow asymmetries due to on-surface potential variations, plasma fuelling physics, Alfvén eigenmodes (AEs) control and stability, the interplay between turbulence and neoclassical (NC) mechanisms and liquid metals are reported. Regarding the validation of the neoclassically predicted potential asymmetries, its impact on the radial electric field along the flux surface has been successfully validated against Doppler reflectometry measurements. Research on the physics and modelling of plasma core fuelling with pellets and tracer encapsulated solid pellet injection has shown that, although post-injection particle radial redistributions can be understood qualitatively from NC mechanisms, turbulence and fluctuations are strongly affected during the ablation process. Advanced analysis tools based on transfer entropy have shown that radial electric fields do not only affect the radial turbulence correlation length but are also capable of reducing the propagation of turbulence from the edge into the scrape-off layer. Direct experimental observation of long range correlated structures show that zonal flow structures are ubiquitous in the whole plasma cross-section in the TJ-II stellarator. Alfvénic activity control strategies using ECRH and ECCD as well as the relation between zonal structures and AEs are reported. Finally, the behaviour of liquid metals exposed to hot and cold plasmas in a capillary porous system container was investigated.

We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been maintained for tens of seconds. Pellet fueling allows for plasma phases with reduced ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, and during such phases, the overall confinement is so good (energy confinement times often exceeding 200 ms) that the attained density and temperature profiles would not have been possible in less optimized devices, since they would have had neoclassical transport losses exceeding the heating applied in W7-X. This provides proof that the reduction of neoclassical transport through magnetic field optimization is successful. W7-X plasmas generally show good impurity screening and high plasma purity, but there is evidence of longer impurity confinement times during turbulence-suppressed phases. The optimized superconducting stellarator device Wendelstein 7-X (with major radius , minor radius , and plasma volume) restarted operation after the assembly of a graphite heat shield and 10 inertially cooled island divertor modules. This paper reports on the results from the first high-performance plasma operation. Glow discharge conditioning and ECRH conditioning discharges in helium turned out to be important for density and edge radiation control. Plasma densities of with central electron temperatures were routinely achieved with hydrogen gas fueling, frequently terminated by a radiative collapse. In a first stage, plasma densities up to were reached with hydrogen pellet injection and helium gas fueling. Here, the ions are indirectly heated, and at a central density of a temperature of with was transiently accomplished, which corresponds to with a peak diamagnetic energy of and volume-averaged normalized plasma pressure . The routine access to high plasma densities was opened with boronization of the first wall. After boronization, the oxygen impurity content was reduced by a factor of 10, the carbon impurity content by a factor of 5. The reduced (edge) plasma radiation level gives routinely access to higher densities without radiation collapse, e.g. well above line integrated density and central temperatures at moderate ECRH power. Both X2 and O2 mode ECRH schemes were successfully applied. Core turbulence was measured with a phase contrast imaging diagnostic and suppression of turbulence during pellet injection was observed.

The second operation phase of W7-X (OP1.2) showed the potential of exclusively electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH)-sustained plasma operations in stellarators. Employing multi-pass ECRH scenario in the second harmonic O-mode (O2-ECRH), stationary densities of up to 1.4 × 1020 m−3 could be achieved. This scenario also made stationary divertor detachment possible, which is a reactor-relevant scenario for power and particle exhaust. At high densities and with sufficiently high density gradients for an improved ion confinement, the coupling between the electrons and ions was strong enough to bring the ion temperature to values above 3 keV and to the neoclassical limit for some magnetic configurations, thus enabling to test the W7-X neoclassical optimization. The planned enhancement of the ECRH performance will enable to advance towards reactor-relevant beta values and to investigate their stability and confinement of fast particles, which is a priority goal of W7-X.

Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X), the largest advanced stellarator, is built to demonstrate high power, high performance quasi-continuous operation. Therefore, in the recent campaign, experiments were performed to prepare for long pulse operation, addressing three critical issues: the development of stable detachment, control of the heat and particle exhaust, and the impact of leading edges on plasma performance. The heat and particle exhaust in W7-X is realized with the help of an island divertor, which utilizes large magnetic islands at the plasma boundary. This concept shows very efficient heat flux spreading and favourable scaling with input power. Experiments performed to overload leading edges showed that the island divertor yields good impurity screening. A highlight of the recent campaign was a robust detachment scenario, which allowed reducing power loads even by a factor of ten. At the same time, neutral pressures at the pumping gap entrance yielded the particle removal rate close to the values required for stable density control in steady-state operation.

A significant improvement of plasma parameters in the optimized stellarator W7-X is found after injections of frozen hydrogen pellets. The ion temperature in the post-pellet phase exceeds 3 keV with 5 MW of electron heating and the global energy confinement time surpasses the empirical ISS04-scaling. The plasma parameters realized in such experiments are significantly above those in comparable gas-fuelled discharges. In this paper, we present details of these pellet experiments and discuss the main plasma properties during the enhanced confinement phases. Local power balance is applied to show that the heat transport in post-pellet phases is close to the neoclassical level for the ion channel and is about a factor of two above that level for the combined losses. In comparable gas-fuelled discharges, the heat transport is by about ten times larger than the neoclassical level, and thus is largely anomalous. It is further observed that the improvement in the transport is related to the peaked density profiles that lead to a stabilization of the ion-scale turbulence.

Observations on confinement in the first experimental campaign on the optimized Stellarator Wendelstein 7-X are summarized. In this phase W7-X was equipped with five inboard limiters only and thus the discharge length restricted to avoid local overheating. Stationary plasmas are limited to low densities

For the first time, the optimized stellarator Wendelstein 7-X has operated with an island divertor. An operation regime in hydrogen was found in which the total plasma radiation approached the absorbed heating power without noticeable loss of stored energy. The divertor thermography recorded simultaneously a strong reduction of the heat load on all divertor targets, indicating almost complete power detachment. This operation regime was stably sustained over several energy confinement times until the preprogrammed end of the discharge. The plasma radiation is mainly due to oxygen and is located at the plasma edge. This plasma scenario is reproducible and robust at various heating powers, plasma densities, and gas fueling locations. These experimental results show that the island divertor concept actually works and displays good power dissipation potential, producing a promising exhaust concept for the stellarator reactor line.

Wendelstein 7-X is a highly optimized stellarator that went into operation in 2015. With a 30 cubic meter volume, a superconducting coil system operating at 2.5 T, and steady-state heating capability of eventually up to 10 MW, it was built to demonstrate the benefits of optimized stellarators at parameters approaching those of a fusion power plant. We report here on the first results with the test divertor installed, during the second operation phase, which was performed in the second half of 2017. Operation with a divertor, and the addition of several new fueling systems, allowed higher density operation in hydrogen as well as helium. The effects that higher density operation had on both divertor operation and global confinement will be described. In particular, at high densities detachment was observed, and the highest fusion triple product for a stellarator was achieved.

During the two most recent experimental campaigns in the advanced stellarator Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) (Klinger et al 2017 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 59 014018; Bosch et al 2017 Nucl. Fusion 57 116015; Wolf et al 2017 Nucl. Fusion 57 102020; Pedersen et al 2017 Phys. Plasmas 24 0555030) hydrogen ice pellet injection was performed for the first time. In order to investigate the potential of pellet fueling in W7-X and to study the particle deposition in a large stellarator, a blower-gun system was installed with 40 pellets capability. The experience gained with this system will be used for the specification of a future steady-state pellet injector system. One important motivation for a pellet injector (Dibon 2014 Master-Thesis Technical University Munich, Max-Planck Institut IPP) on W7-X is the mitigation of hollow density profiles expected in case of predominant neoclassical transport. For long-pulse operation of up to 30 min, only electron cyclotron resonance heating is available on W7-X. Hence, pellet injection will be the only source for deep particle fueling. Deep particle fueling by pellets in tokamaks is supported by a grad-B drift, if the pellets are injected from the magnetic high-field-side. This approach was tested in W7-X, as well. The injection of series of pellets was also tested. Here, deep fueling is supported for later pellets in the series by the plasma cooling following the initial pellets in the same series. As in earlier experiments in the heliotron LHD (Takeiri et al 2017 Nucl. Fusion 57 102023), deep and rapid fueling could be achieved successfully in W7-X.

International audience; The Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) optimized stellarator fusion experiment,which went into operation in 2015, has been operating since 2017 with anun-cooled modular graphite divertor. This allowed first divertor physicsstudies to be performed at pulse energies up to 80 MJ, as opposed to 4MJ in the first operation phase, where five inboard limiters wereinstalled instead of a divertor. This, and a number of other upgrades tothe device capabilities, allowed extension into regimes of higher plasmadensity, heating power, and performance overall, e.g. setting a newstellarator world record triple product. The paper focuses on the firstphysics studies of how the island divertor works. The plasma heat loadsarrive to a very high degree on the divertor plates, with only minorheat loads seen on other components, in particular baffle structuresbuilt in to aid neutral compression. The strike line shapes andlocations change significantly from one magnetic configuration toanother, in very much the same way that codes had predicted they would.Strike-line widths are as large as 10 cm, and the wetted areas alsolarge, up to about 1.5 m2, which bodes well for futureoperation phases. Peak local heat loads onto the divertor were ingeneral benign and project below the 10 MW m?2 limit of thefuture water-cooled divertor when operated with 10 MW of heating power,with the exception of low-density attached operation in the high-iotaconfiguration. The most notable result was the complete (in all 10divertor units) heat-flux detachment obtained at high-density operationin hydrogen.

In its second operation phase (OP1.2a) W7-X was equipped with full 3d island divertor and an upgraded ECRH-system of 10 gyrotrons with a total port through power of 7 MW. The combination of pellet fueling and high density ECRH enabled to explore density above 1 1020 m-3. In particular with the O2-polarisation combined with a multi-pass reflector tile system a density of up to 1.4 1020 m-3 was achieved. At slightly lower densities high core beta values and record values of the fusion tripple product of 0.66 1020 m-3 keVs for stellarators were reached. In addition routine plasma start-up and ECRH wall conditioning were performed. The island divertor enables to demonstrate the intrinsic steady state capabilities of W7-X, where stationary discharges of up to 30s were demonstrated being only limited by the heat capacity of the uncooled divertor. With the flexible ECRH launch system current density profile variations were used for MHD stability investigations. Here by fine-tuning of the ECCD profile different MHD activity could be triggered.

Transport studies of pellet fuelling experiments on LHD are reported. Spatio-temporal evolutions after pellet injection into LHD discharges show cases where central density increases on the time scale of particle transport processes. Both the temperature gradient and the density gradient change during the density relaxation, the latter even in sign. The resulting thermodynamic forces influence radial electric fields - both as a driving term but also by, e.g. affecting the E r dependence of ion transport. Magnetic fluctuations have been found to be induced by pellet injection but die out with the relaxation of the pressure profile.

Wendelstein 7-X, a superconducting optimized stellarator built in Greifswald/Germany, started its first plasmas with the last closed flux surface (LCFS) defined by 5 uncooled graphite limiters in December 2015. At the end of the 10 weeks long experimental campaign (OP1.1) more than 20 independent diagnostic systems were in operation, allowing detailed studies of many interesting plasma phenomena. For example, fast neutral gas manometers supported by video cameras (including one fast-frame camera with frame rates of tens of kHz) as well as visible cameras with different interference filters, with field of views covering all ten half-modules of the stellarator, discovered a MARFE-like radiation zone on the inboard side of machine module 4. This structure is presumably triggered by an inadvertent plasma-wall interaction in module 4 resulting in a high impurity influx that terminates some discharges by radiation cooling. The main plasma parameters achieved in OP1.1 exceeded predicted values in discharges of a length reaching 6 s. Although OP1.1 is characterized by short pulses, many of the diagnostics are already designed for quasi-steady state operation of 30 min discharges heated at 10 MW of ECRH. An overview of diagnostic performance for OP1.1 is given, including some highlights from the physics campaigns.

Impurity seeding experiments during the start-up limiter campaign of Wendelstein 7-X provide first evidence for a localization effect of the 3D magnetic edge structure on the seeded impurities and their radiation distribution and cooling effect. Moreover, species dependencies have been seen. Nitrogen was observed to cool the entire edge plasma, with a stronger electron temperature reduction measured at the downstream position at the limiter. The radiation was limited at the periphery of the confined region. Both the temperature reduction and the radiation enhancement were directly correlated to the injection of the coolant gas. Mitigation of the limiter heat loads was also measured. Neon was observed to affect also the confined plasma with a long-lasting radiation and a cooling of the entire plasma.

The stellarator Wendelstein W7-X, a fusion plasma experiment, is almost ready to be set into plasma operation. Seventy superconducting coils produce the magnetic field that is required to confine the plasma. The coils are arranged in a cryostat vacuum vessel in shape of a torus. The superconductors are cooled by supercritical helium down to the nominal operating temperature between 3 K and 4 K. Before operation, vacuum leak search was performed on the machine, both the cryostat and the plasma vessel. Most of the leaks could be fixed; however not all. But the residual helium leak rate is too small to hamper the successful coil operation. A refined leak search is pending for the future, in order to localize and fix all the remaining leaks. This paper describes a numerical regression analysis, performed to localize these remaining leaks. The regression analysis could gain information on the size and position of the leak, and, at least in principle, on the hydraulic helium flow behavior inside the leak channel. It could be a helpful complement to the standard leak search techniques that had been used before.

Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is a superconducting stellarator under construction at the Max-Planck-Institute for Plasma Physics in Greifswald, Germany. The magnet system consists of 70 superconducting coils providing magnetic confinement-fields. Before assembly every coil had to pass an acceptance test at the French partner-institute CEA, Saclay, to examine its performance on leak tightness, high voltage strength, ampacity, and hydraulic flow at cryogenic conditions. The testing procedure was mandatory, as access for maintenance or repair after installation will not be viable. Testing followed a well specified routine including tests in warm conditions, during cool down, in cold conditions, during warm up and at last in warm conditions. Measurement was obtained firstly by the facility's instrumentation and secondly by the coil-casing's instrumentation. The received data was transmitted to different ASCII-files for each gauge. To record testing in detail, a meta-document was edited, which follows in its structure the routine mentioned above. Accordingly, the main distinctive functions of the coil during testing are recorded in so called test reports, while deviations from given thresholds and parameters are described in non conformity reports. During testing, organizational and technical challenges had to be mastered and the test program was regularly updated to meet technical improvements, manufacturing requirements and revised assembly schedules. This paper will present the acceptance test program, its development and the gained experiences.

Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is a large optimized stellarator (B=2.5T, V=30m3) aiming at demonstrating the reactor relevance of the optimized stellarators. In 2015 W7-X will begin its first operation phase (OP1.1) with five inertially cooled inboard limiters made of graphite. Assuming the heat loads can be spread out evenly between the limiters, 1 second discharges at 2 MW of ECRH heating power could be run in OP1.1. The expected plasma parameters will be sufficient to demonstrate the readiness of the installed diagnostics and even to run a first physics program. The diagnostics available for this first operation phase, including some special limiter diagnostics, and their capabilities are being presented. For the stellarator Wendelstein 7-X, a plasma fusion experiment, the performance of the superconducting coils is tested in a cryogenic test facility. Focus is on the quench behaviour of these coils. Some key data of the coils are given here. The coil quench data, obtained during the tests, are compared to GANDALF code calculations. GANDALF is a one-dimensional finite elements code for the simulation of the quench properties of superconducting CICC cables. Good consistency between measurement and calculation is found for the development of the resistive voltage and temperature increase during the quench.

During the fabrication of the coils for the Wendelstein 7-X experiment the need for pressure dependent high voltage testing-Paschen tests-of the coils and components arose. These tests ensure the safety of the coils in case of an emergency shutdown due to a break in the vacuum of the cryostat. For that purpose the vacuum test facility at Babcock Noell Nuclear was modified in order to perform these tests. It is now possible to test coils and their components up to 17 kV and for pressures below 1.0middot10-3 mbar. Completed coils, winding packs before insertion in the case and also several components have been tested up to now. It has been demonstrated that these Paschen tests are a powerful tool to detect insulation defects. The paper shows the effort which has been taken to set up the test facilities. It will show the preparation of the components under testing as well as present and discuss the results obtained up to now

The W7-X machine is a low-shear stellarator of the Wendelstein line being assembled in Greifswald, Germany. The manufacture of its superconducting magnets is in a well advanced phase. After the acceptance tests in the factory, the magnets are tested in cold conditions in a dedicated facility at CEA Saclay. This paper gives an overview of the status of the manufacture of the W7-X coils, including the production of the superconductor, the windings and casings for the magnets, the final assembly and in-factory test procedures. Several design changes and re-work have been implemented in the course of the manufacture due to more detailed engineering analyses or weaknesses and quality problems found in some components. The status of the cold tests of the coils will also be presented

The dynamic interplay of turbulence propagation velocity v⊥ and turbulence amplitude at the H-mode transition is studied by means of Doppler reflectometry. The optimized microwave antenna design allows for a temporal resolution of less than 10 µs. For the selected radial layers in the first few centimetres inside the separatrix v⊥ closely follows the E × B-velocity as it is obtained from impurity spectroscopy. Both the L–H transition as well as H–L back-transition occur at a certain threshold of the velocity shear; a typical value for a position 2 cm inside the separatrix is ∇Er = − 100 V cm−2. As a general trend in both L- and H-mode the turbulence amplitude increases with decreasing v⊥ corresponding to a decreasing velocity shear ∇v⊥. This relation is broken at the transition itself where a sudden change of is observed within 200 µs whereas no significant discontinuity is found for v⊥. On a fast timescale the probed plasma layer displays a rich dynamic behaviour such as large correlated excursions of v⊥ and with a frequency expected for geodesic acoustic modes and nearly completed transitions prior to the final one. We propose that the observed dynamics around the H-mode transition can be considered critical fluctuations around the phase transition between high- and low-rotation plasma edge.

Deep particle fueling into a fusion-relevant plasma can be performed by the injection of cryogenic hydrogen or deuterium pellets. However, the penetration depth and fueling efficiency can be greatly limited when enhanced pellet ablation by fast particles occurs. Only a limited database exists for the penetration depth of ice pellets into stellarators. The penetration depth is measured during pellet injection into purely electron cyclotron resonance heated plasmas on the Wendelstein 7-AS (W7-AS) stellarator. These data are compared with the International Pellet Ablation Database (IPADBASE). Good agreement is found, if the neutral gas shielding model is applied for the scaling law of the penetration depth. The experimental data from W7-AS are used as a basis for planning a new pellet injection system for the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, which is now under construction.

The dependence of impurity transport on plasma parameters in the modular stellarator Wendelstein 7-AS was investigated by means of a laser blow-off technique. An increased impurity transport at higher heating power and lower magnetic field strength as well as no effect of the isotope composition on the impurity confinement was observed. The most critical scaling with respect to stationary operation at high density is the improved confinement of impurities at high densities, leading to a degradation of plasma energy by increasing radiation and to a loss of density control. This was attributed to a reduction of the impurity diffusion coefficient with density. After installation of island divertor modules, a transition from normal confinement into the high-density H-mode (HDH) at a certain power-dependent threshold density appeared. This transition is characterized by a strong reduction of the impurity confinement time and an increase in energy confinement time. In the HDH operational regime, access to even higher densities (4 x 10{sup 20} m{sup -3}) than achieved before became possible under stationary operation conditions. Impurity transport measurements and model predictions indicate that the reduction of the impurity confinement in HDH is caused by not only a reduction of the inward convection in the coremore » plasma but also possibly by changes in the edge transport. Comparison of experimental data with an axisymmetric transport model should elucidate the role of stellarator-specific transport aspects.« less

Wendelstein 7-AS (W7-AS) pertains to an advanced helical stellarator. A new fuelling method, the supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI, named Gas Jet in Germany) system was installed in W7-AS in May 2001 as a cooperation research item co-supported by the National Nature Science Foundation of China and the Max-Planck Institute of Plasma Physics, Garching, Germany. The experiments of the gas jet with hydrogen or deuterium on W7-AS were implemented. The experimental results exhibit the following features such as high fuelling efficiency, stable high-density plasmas and reduction of the recycling fluxes from the vessel wall during injection. These crucial points show that the new fuelling method can be applied to long and stable discharges.

The research on divertors for stellarators is at the beginning. Extensive studies are being prepared on large helical device (LHD) and W7-X. W7-AS is now being operated with an open island divertor (ID) which serves as a test bed for the W7-X diverter. The divertor enables access to a new NBI-heated, high-density operating regime with improved confinement properties. This regime-the high-density H-mode (HDH)-displays no evident mode activity, is extant above a threshold density and characterized by flat density profiles. high-energy- and low-impurity-confinement times and edge-localized radiation. Impurity accumulation, normally associated with ELM-free H-modes, is avoided. Quasi-steady-state discharges with n e up to 4 x 10 20 m -3 , edge radiation levels up to 90% and plasma partial detachment at the divertor targets can be simultaneously realized. The accessibility to other improved confinement modes in W7-AS (conventional H-mode anti OC-mode) is not restricted by the divertor. The results provide a promising basis for future experiments, in particular on W7-X, and recommend the ID as a serious candidate for solving the plasma exhaust problem in stellarators.

The installation of divertor plates in the W7-AS stellarator has allowed attainment of a high energy confinement regime at high density, where the radiation profiles reached steady state. In this regime, the radial profile of the radiated power is hollow. Raising the density to the point where the radiated power approached the input power led to plasma detachment and a decrease in diamagnetic energy. This defines the density limit in a stellarator and a scaling law for this maximum density can be heuristically derived on the basis of power balance considerations. The installation of two bolometer cameras away from the divertor plates and three bolometer cameras in the vicinity of the divertor plates has provided insight into the features of high density operation of a divertor in a stellarator. In the main chamber, tomographic inversion at the density limit has shown that a poloidally asymmetric radiation profile developed as the density limit was approached. In the divertor, radiation in front of the divertor plates occurred while the plasma was attached and this radiation zone vanished at plasma detachment. Steady state discharges of up to 1.5 s have been achieved for neutral beam injection power of up to 2 MW. A precursor to a spontaneous transition out of the high confinement regime has been identified.

The radial electric field Er is of crucial importance for the global confinement properties of a stellarator plasma. In particular, in the long-mean-free-path regime, which is characterized by strongly enhanced neoclassical transport, the ambipolar Er can help to reduce the unfavourably large neoclassical transport coefficients. In the stellarator Wendelstein 7-AS (W7-AS), Er is increased by the almost perpendicular injection of highly energetic neutral particles. The induced fast-ion orbit losses, drive the ambipolar Er more negative. Changes of the radial electric field up to ?20?000?V?m?1 are attained in the gradient region of W7-AS. The observed increase of the global energy confinement time is in the range of 10% in the best examples. In parallel to the experiments, numerical Monte-Carlo simulations of the ion orbit losses and the formation of the nonambipolar Er are performed.

In this paper, measurements of small scale electron density fluctuations in low confinement (L)-mode and high confinement (H)-mode plasmas obtained by collective scattering of infrared light are presented. A single discharge in the Wendelstein 7-AS (W7-AS) stellarator (Renner H et al 1989 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 31 1579) was studied. The plasma developed from steady-state L-mode to a dithering mode and finally became an edge localized mode (ELM)-free H-mode. These three phases are separately characterized. Autopower spectra of density fluctuations measured in the dithering and ELM-free H-modes are limited to lower frequencies than those in the dithering and steady-state L-modes. Correlations between the density fluctuations, an Hα-signal and magnetic fluctuations as measured by Mirnov coils were analysed. The correlation calculations made for time windows of tens of milliseconds with time lag steps of 100 μs show that all the fluctuating quantities are highly correlated during the L-mode and dithering states, but that no correlation exists in the ELM-free H-mode. Evaluating correlations on a 20 μs timescale between magnetic and density fluctuations leads to the result that the minimum correlation timescale in steady-state and dithering L-modes is of order 100 μs, while no correlation exists for ELM-free and dithering H-modes. Finally, the time derivative of the phase of the measured complex density fluctuation signal allows us to study the structure of turbulent bursts in L- and H-mode.

Combined measurements of ion density, temperature and poloidal rotation of impurity ions have been carried out in the gradient region of the Wendelstein 7-AS plasma, employing charge-exchange spectroscopy with the high-energy neutral Li beam and C6+/C5+ ions. The present state of the experimental technique is described. Results are obtained in discharges with high central ion temperatures of 13 keV, central electron densities of 7 x 10(19) m(-3). Under these conditions the diagnostic covers a region of about 7 cm radial extent, corresponding to ion temperatures between 50 and 800 eV. Poloidal rotation velocities up to (35 +/- 2.5) km s(-1) were measured in a narrow shear layer at the plasma edge. The contribution of ion diamagnetic and E x B drift is discussed. The radial electric field is derived from a simplified radial force balance equation.

Stellarators have the intrinsic property of steady state operation. However, on present-day stellarators the pulse length is usually not only limited due to technical reasons, but also by physical problems. Lack of density control and a subsequent radiation collapse terminate the discharges quite often at high densities. To improve the control of the plasma-wall interaction, the island divertor concept was developed for optimized stellarators. To test this divertor concept on W7-AS, all limiters were removed and replaced by ten divertor modules. In subsequent divertor experiments a promising new plasma operational regime has been discovered which is termed 'high density H-mode' (HDH-mode). During the transition into that regime a clear reduction of ELM-like events and turbulent fluctuations is observed. The HDH-mode combines good energy confinement with very low impurity confinement resulting in low core radiation, but high edge-localized radiation. Consequently, stationary discharges at densities of typically 2 x 10 20 m -3 can be performed within the accessible pulse length of about 1 s. At densities above 3 x 10 20 m -3 a controlled transition from attached to partially detached plasmas is observed. The still edge-localized radiation reaches 90% of the heating power so that the power load onto the divertor target plates is further reduced. At a lower toroidal field of 0.9 T average β-values could be raised from earlier 2% to more than 3% in magnetic field configurations with rather smooth flux surfaces at the plasma boundary. The recently obtained results render excellent prospects for W7-X, the larger superconducting successor experiment of W7-AS.

In this article measurements of small scale electron density fluctuations in dithering high confinement~H!-mode plasmas obtained by collective scattering of infrared light are presented. A scan of the fluctuation wavenumber was made in a series of similar discharges in the Wendelstein 7-AS ~W7-AS! stellarator @H. Renner et al., Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 31, 1579 ~1989!#. The experimental setup and discharge properties are described. Ha-light observing an inner limiter was used to separate low confinement ~L!- and H-mode phases of the plasma; the separated density fluctuations are characterized. It was found that L- ~H-! mode fluctuations dominate at high ~low! frequencies, respectively, and that they possess well-defined and distinguishable scaling properties. Wavenumber spectra for L- and H-mode measurements are calculated and fitted by power-laws and exponential functions. The separated measurements can be fitted with the same exponents in L- and H-mode. Correlations between the density fluctuations, the H a-signal and magnetic fluctuations as measured by Mirnov coils were analyzed. Correlation calculations using 50 ms time windows ~several dithering periods! with time lag steps of 100 ms showed that all the fluctuating quantities are highly correlated and that the maximum correlation occurs for high frequency density fluctuations. Performing separate L- and H-mode correlations on a 20 ms time scale between magnetic and density fluctuations leads to the result that the minimum correlation time scale in L-mode is of order 100 ms, while no correlation exists for H-mode. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1481747#

As the finalization of a hydrogen experiment towards the deuterium phase, the exploration of the best performance of hydrogen plasma was intensively performed in the large helical device. High ion and electron temperatures, Ti and Te, of more than 6 keV were simultaneously achieved by superimposing high-power electron cyclotron resonance heating onneutral beam injection (NBI) heated plasma. Although flattening of the ion temperature profile in the core region was observed during the discharges, one could avoid degradation by increasing the electron density. Another key parameter to present plasma performance is an averaged beta value $\left\langle \beta \right\rangle $ . The high $\left\langle \beta \right\rangle $ regime around 4% was extended to an order of magnitude lower than the earlier collisional regime. Impurity behaviour in hydrogen discharges with NBI heating was also classified with a wide range of edge plasma parameters. The existence of a no impurity accumulation regime, where the high performance plasma is maintained with high power heating >10 MW, was identified. Wide parameter scan experiments suggest that the toroidal rotation and the turbulence are the candidates for expelling impurities from the core region.

The main objective of the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator is to demonstrate the integrated reactor potential of the optimized stellarator line. An important element of this mission is the achievement of high heating-power and high confinement in steady-state operation. Such an integrated plasma operation has not yet been demonstrated and represents the major scientific goal of W7-X. The way towards this goal is staged. In the first phase, called OP 1.1, December 2015-March 2016, a limiter configuration was used. In this paper, the preparation of the first operation phase as well as lessons learned during the first commissioning and the operation phase are discussed, while the physics results from OP 1.1 are reported elsewhere (Wolf et al 2017 Nucl. Fusion 57 102020).

Microwave stray radiation resulting from unabsorbed multiple reflected ECRH / ECCD beams may cause severe heating of microwave absorbing in-vessel components such as gaskets, bellows, windows, ceramics and cable insulations. In view of long-pulse operation of WENDELSTEIN-7X the MIcrowave STray RAdiation Launch facility, MISTRAL, allows to test in-vessel components in the environment of isotropic 140 GHz microwave radiation at power load of up to 50 kW/m2 over 30 min. The results show that both, sufficient microwave shielding measures and cooling of all components are mandatory. If shielding/cooling measures of in-vessel diagnostic components are not efficient enough, the level of stray radiation may be (locally) reduced by dedicated absorbing ceramic coatings on cooled structures.

W7-AS has recently been equipped with ten open divertor modules in order to experimentally evaluate the island divertor concept. First results are reported in this paper. The new divertors enable access to a new NBI-heated, very high density (up to e = 3.5 × 1020 m-3) operating regime with promising confinement properties. The energy confinement time increases steeply with density and then saturates. In contrast, the particle and impurity confinement times decrease with increasing density. This allows full density control and quasi-steady-state operation also under conditions of partial detachment from the divertor targets. Radiated power fractions are low to moderate in attached regimes and reach up to about 90% in detachment scenarios. The radiation always stays peaked at the edge. The extremely high densities necessitated the development of non-standard heating techniques for central heating. For the first time efficient heating of an NBI target plasma by electron Bernstein waves (140 GHz, second harmonic) is achieved. In addition, this heating scenario enables fine tuning of the upstream boundary conditions for divertor operation.

Doppler reflectometry is characterized by a finite tilt angle of the probing microwave beam with respect to the normal onto the cutoff surface. According to the Bragg condition the diagnostic selects density perturbations with wave number K⊥ in the reflecting layer. From the Doppler shift of the returning microwave the propagation velocity of these perturbations v⊥ can be obtained directly. The signal intensity contains information about the perturbation amplitude. The diagnostic potential of Doppler reflectometry is demonstrated both numerically by the use of two-dimensional full-wave codes and experimentally by an antenna system with variable tilt angle installed at the W7-AS stellarator. During stationary plasma conditions the measured profile of the propagation velocity v⊥(r) is dominated by the E×B velocity of the plasma, which is obtained from passive spectroscopy. Transient states of the plasma can be followed with a temporal resolution of less than 50 µs. Thus, Doppler reflectometry allows us to investigate the interdependence of sheared flow and turbulence on that timescale.

In NBI discharges with density ramps in W7-AS, the quiescent H-mode is restricted to the same ranges of the edge rotational transform as in ECRH discharges and occurs above threshold densities ≥ 10 20 m 3 which increase with heating power. Higher power needs higher density for stabilization. The approach to the quiescent H-mode often occurs, with increasing density and decreasing power flow through the edge, from grassy through dithering states to bursts of ELMs and, in a few cases, quasi-periodic ELMs. This goes parallel with increasing radial gradients of the plasma pressure and E-field at the edge. Higher heating power reduces in particular the T i gradients and hence the E-field gradients, which effect can be compensated by higher density. The correlations found are fairly consistent when an E x B flow shear decorrelation of the turbulent transport is assumed.

Density-limit discharges in the W7-AS stellarator, with constant line-integrated density and a duration of up to 2 s, were studied at three values of the toroidal magnetic field (B = 0.8, 1.25 and 2.5 T). The central factor governing the physics of the density limit in stellarators was demonstrated to be the decreasing net power to the plasma when the centrally peaked radiated power density profile exceeds that of the deposited power density. The process was further accelerated by the peaking of electron density under these conditions. In discharges with B = 2.5 T, simulations of the centrally peaked radiation power density profiles could be shown to be due to peaked impurity density profiles. Laser blow off measurements clearly inferred an inward pinch of the injected aluminium. These discharges had the electron density profile form found in the improved confinement H-NBI mode on W7-AS. The aim of producing steady-state discharges at the highest possible density in stellarators is naturally of special interest for reactor operation. Such a scenario has been best achieved in H-mode discharges, in which ELMs restricted the impurity influx to the plasma and an equilibrium in the plasma parameters with suitably low radiation power levels was possible. A density scan in ECRH discharges highlights the need to control impurity sources and choose electron densities well below the density limit in order that steady-state operation can be attempted in discharges without ELMs. A simple model of bulk radiation predicted that the limiting density should depend on the square root of heating power and this was experimentally confirmed. The magnetic field scaling of the limiting density found experimentally in this simple model will partly depend on the term concerning the radial profile of the impurity density, which in turn is a function of the diffusion coefficient and inward pinch of the impurity ions. Theoretical studies have shown that an assumption about the B dependence of the thermal conductivity leads to density limit scaling laws with an explicit B dependence.

H-mode operation in the low-shear stellarator W7-AS is achieved for specific plasma edge topologies characterized by three `operational windows' of the edge rotational transform. An explanation for this strong influence of the magnetic configuration could be the increase of viscous damping if rational surfaces and thus island structures occur within the relevant plasma edge layer, thereby impeding the development of an edge transport barrier. Prior to the final transition to a quiescent state, the plasma edge passes a rich phenomenology of dynamic behaviour such as dithering and ELMs. Plasma edge parameters indicate that a quiescent H-mode occurs if a certain edge pressure is achieved.

In addition to the well known H-mode, other types of discharges with enhanced core energy confinement can be observed in the stellarator W7-AS. In this contribution, the properties of some particular examples of those optimized confinement (OC) discharges are presented. These are characterized, besides improved core energy confinement, by strong negative radial electric fields and high ion temperatures in the gradient region, steep density profile gradients and a high penetration depth of neutrals, and small edge electron densities. The role of these plasma parameters for the OC discharges is investigated quantitatively by a numerical model.
