Abstract

The paper describes the goals of the Open Transport Net project in the pilot regions for regional development and the motivation to use traffic volumes in order to reach the project objectives. In the introduction, a short overview of the Open Transport Net project is provided. It is followed by descriptions of the identified problems in the pilot regions and incentives to use traffic volumes for achieving good quality results. The basics of traffic volumes as well as their visualisation are further described and demonstrated including several examples.

Abstract

The contribution deals with the prediction of crop yield levels, using an artificial intelligence approach, namely a multi-layer neural network model. Subsequently, we are contrasting this approach with several non-linear regression models, the usefulness of which has been tested and published several times in the specialized periodicals. The main stress is placed on judging the accuracy of the individual methods and of the implementation. A neural network simulation device is that which enables the user to set an adequate configuration of the neural network vis a vis the required task. The conclusions can be generalized for other tasks of a similar nature, especially for the tasks of a non-linear character, where the benefits of this method increase.

Abstract

Recent results from the CERN Omega spectrometer on the enhancement of strange and multiply strange particle production in nucleus-nucleus with respect to proton-nucleus collisions are summarized. In particular, the new data from the WA97 experiment on Ω, Ξ and Λ production in PbPb and p-Pb collisions are presented and discussed.

Abstract

Preliminary results from WA97 measurements on Λ, Ξ and Ω production in lead-lead and proton-lead collisions are presented, along with a comparison of WA97 proton-lead data with previous WA85 proton-tungsten results. The ratio Ω/Ξ seems to be enhanced in lead initiated reactions compared to proton initiated reactions.

Abstract

The Discrete Zolotarev Transform (DZT) brings an improvement in the field of spectral analysis of non-stationary signals. However, the transformation algorithm called Approximated Discrete Zolotarev Transform (ADZT) suffers from high computational complexity. The Short Time ADZT (STADZT) requires high segment length, 512 samples, and more, while high segment overlap to prevent information loss, 75 % at least. The STADZT requirements along with the ADZT algorithm computational complexity result in a rather high computational load. The algorithm computational complexity, behavior, and quantization error impacts are analyzed. We present a solution which deals with high computational load employing co-design methods targeting Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The system is able to compute one-shot DZT spectrum 2 048 samples long in ≈ 22ms. Real-time STADZT spectrum of a mono audio signal of 16 kHz sampling frequency can be computed with overlap of 91 %.

Abstract

The series of experiments (WA85, WA94 and WA97) at the Omega spectrometer at CERN SPS have systematically studied the production of different strange particles. Strangeness enhancements at central rapidities have been reported by WA85 and WA94 in S-W and SS with respect to p-A collisions. For the investigation of PbPb interactions in the WA97 experiment a new detector suitable for high particle densities, the Pixel Tracking Chamber, has been developed based on silicon pixel detectors. The results on production ratios and cross sections of Λ, Λ , Ξ − , Ξ + , Ω − and Ω + detected by this experiment are presented. A significant enhancement of the Ω over Ξ ratio is observed when comparing p-Pb to PbPb data (a factor of about 3).

Abstract

General aspects of the H1 detector at the electron-proton storage ring HERA as well as technical descriptions of the magnet, luminosity system, trigger, slow-control, data acquisition and off-line data handling are given. The three major components of the detector, the tracking, calorimeter and muon detectors, will be described in a forthcoming article. The present paper describes the detector that was used from 1992 to the end of 1994. After this a major upgrade of some components was undertaken. Some performance figures from luminosity runs at HERA during 1993 and 1994 are given.

Abstract

Technical aspects of the three major components of the H1 detector at the electron-proton storage ring HERA are described. This paper covers the detector status up to the end of 1994 when a major upgrading of some of its elements was undertaken. A description of the other elements of the detector and some performance figures from luminosity runs at HERA during 1993 and 1994 are given in a paper previously published in this journal.

Abstract

Preliminary results from WA97 measurements on Λ, Ξ and Ω production in lead-lead and proton-lead collisions are presented, along with a comparison of WA97 proton-lead data with previous WA85 proton-tungsten results. The ratio Ω gX seems to be enhanced in lead initiated reactions compared to proton initiated reactions.

Abstract

Biopsies of the decidua parietalis were performed at different times after intra-amniotic instillation of hypertonic saline (10 per cent NaCl). Decidual changes were noted as soon as two hours after instillation and they gradually increased in intensity and extension as time elapsed. The decidual changes preceded uterine activity and the decrease of plasma progesterone. Since decidual cells contain prostaglandins (PG) it is suggested that a PG release from damaged decidual cells could induce abortion. However, the early appearance of decidual lesions and the late onset of labor remained to be explained. Other factors such as the fall of progesterone could influence the onset of labor. Decidual lesions may be of importance in spontaneous abortion, in premature labor, and labor at term.

Abstract

Fluorescence characteristics of 6α-hydroxyoestradiol-17β, 6-hydroxyoestriol, 6-oxo-oestradiol-17β and 6-oxo-oestriol were compared with oestriol andΔ 16-oestratetraenol, using the Kober-Ittrich-Brown reaction at higher temperatures. The parameters of reaction conditions were varied as follows: H2SO4 40–96%, heating time and/or temperature 1–60 min/100–140°C, diluting volume 1–2.5ml H2O, extracting solvent tetrachloroethane, tetrabromoethane or chloroform containing 0–2–4% p-nitrophenol and 1–1–2% ethanol. Optimal conditions were found excepting both 6-oxo-oestrogens which have been found as fluorometrically not useful. Excitation and emission spectra recorded with the Perkin-Elmer-Hitachi Fluorescence Spectrophotometer MPF-2A give evidence of probably two fluorogenic systems of both 6-hydroxyoestrogens. Excitation peaks at 440 and 536 nm, emission peaks at 550 and 584 nm show to be dependent on the reaction conditions, extracting solvent and excitation wavelength.

12. Overcoming Inter-Subject Variability in BCI Using EEG-Based Identification

Abstract

The high dependency of the Brain Computer Interface (BCI) system performance on the BCI user is a well-known issue of many BCI devices. This contribution presents a new way to overcome this problem using a synergy between a BCI device and an EEG-based biometric algorithm. Using the biometric algorithm, the BCI device automatically identifies its current user and adapts parameters of the classification process and of the BCI protocol to maximize the BCI performance. In addition to this we present an algorithm for EEG-based identification designed to be resistant to variations in EEG recordings between sessions, which is also demonstrated by an experiment with an EEG database containing two sessions recorded one year apart. Further, our algorithm is designed to be compatible with our movement-related BCI device and the evaluation of the algorithm performance took place under conditions of a standard BCI experiment. Estimation of the mu rhythm fundamental frequency using the Frequency Zooming AR modeling is used for EEG feature extraction followed by a classifier based on the regularized Mahalanobis distance. An average subject identification score of 96 % is achieved.

Abstract

The contribution presents an application of a movement-related EEG temporal development classification which improves the classification score of voluntary movements controlled by closely localized regions of the brain. A dynamic Hidden Markov Model-based (HMM) classifier specifically designed to capture EEG temporal behavior was used. Surprisingly, HMM classifiers are rarely used for BCI design despite of their advantages. Because of this we also experimented with Learning Vector Quantization, Perceptron, and Support Vector Machine classifiers using a feature space which captures the temporal dynamics of the data. The results presented in this work show that HMM achieves the best performance due to an a priori information on physiological behavior of EEG inserted to the HMM classifier. Feature extraction process and problems with classification were analyzed as well. Classification scores of 66.7% – 94.7% were achieved in our experiments.

Abstract

In this paper a novel approach for independent component analysis (ICA) model order estimation of movement electroencephalogram (EEG) signals is described. The application is targeted to the brain-computer interface (BCI) EEG preprocessing. The previous work has shown that it is possible to decompose EEG into movement-related and non-movement-related independent components (ICs). The selection of only movement related ICs might lead to BCI EEG classification score increasing. The real number of the independent sources in the brain is an important parameter of the preprocessing step. Previously, we used principal component analysis (PCA) for estimation of the number of the independent sources. However, PCA estimates only the number of uncorrelated and not independent components ignoring the higher-order signal statistics. In this work, we use another approach - selection of highly correlated ICs from several ICA runs. The ICA model order estimation is done at significance level α = 0.05 and the model order is less or more dependent on ICA algorithm and its parameters.

Abstract

The contribution addresses the cross-language experiment. The aimwas to test the possibility of the conversion French phoneme modelsinto Czech ones. This model conversion uses the Hidden Markov Models(HMM) classification procedure. The first step consists of theiterative mapping of French models to Czech ones. The mapping is givenby the analysis the confusion matrix. The second step is the Baum-Welchre-estimation resulting in the final models for Czech language. Despiteof the differences between French and Czech languages the finalrecognition score reaches 64% for the phoneme recognition and 74% fordigit recognition. Relatively low recognition accuracy is caused by theinadequate noise model. The experiences gained with the cross-languageexperiment were utilized for the classification of simple human bodymovements. The contribution describes the design, optimization and verificationof the off-line single-trial movement classification system. Four typesof movements are used for the classification: the right index fingerextension vs. flexion as well as the right shoulder (proximal) vs.right index finger (distal) movement. The classification systemutilizes hidden information stored in the characteristic shapes ofhuman brain activity (EEG signal). The great variability of EEGpotentials requires using of context information and hence theclassifier based on Hidden Markov Models (HMM). The suitableparameterization, model structure as well as training andclassification process are suggested on the base of spectral analysisresults and experience with the speech recognition. The training andthe classification are performed with the disjoint sets of EEGrealizations. Classification experiments are performed with 10 randomlychosen sets of EEG realizations. The final average score of thedistal/proximal movement classification is 80%; the standard deviationof classification results is 9%. The classification of the extension /flexion gives comparable results.

17. Variability of Inverted Repeats in All Available Genomes of Bacteria.

Abstract

Noncanonical secondary structures in nucleic acids have been studied intensively in recent years. Important biological roles of cruciform structures formed by inverted repeats (IRs) have been demonstrated in diverse organisms, including humans. Using Palindrome analyser, we analyzed IRs in all accessible bacterial genome sequences to determine their frequencies, lengths, and localizations. IR sequences were identified in all species, but their frequencies differed significantly across various evolutionary groups. We detected 242,373,717 IRs in all 1,565 bacterial genomes. The highest mean IR frequency was detected in the Tenericutes (61.89 IRs/kbp) and the lowest mean frequency was found in the Alphaproteobacteria (27.08 IRs/kbp). IRs were abundant near genes and around regulatory, tRNA, transfer-messenger RNA (tmRNA), and rRNA regions, pointing to the importance of IRs in such basic cellular processes as genome maintenance, DNA replication, and transcription. Moreover, we found that organisms with high IR frequencies were more likely to be endosymbiotic, antibiotic producing, or pathogenic. On the other hand, those with low IR frequencies were far more likely to be thermophilic. This first comprehensive analysis of IRs in all available bacterial genomes demonstrates their genomic ubiquity, nonrandom distribution, and enrichment in genomic regulatory regions. IMPORTANCE Our manuscript reports for the first time a complete analysis of inverted repeats in all fully sequenced bacterial genomes. Thanks to the availability of unique computational resources, we were able to statistically evaluate the presence and localization of these important regulatory sequences in bacterial genomes. Abstract

The p53 protein is a key tumor suppressor and the most commonly mutated and down-regulated protein in human tumors. It functions mainly through interaction with DNA, and p53 acts as a transcription factor that recognizes the so-called p53 target sites on the promoters of various genes. P53 has been shown to exist as many isoforms, including three C-terminal isoforms that are produced by alternative splicing. Because the C-terminal domain is responsible for sequence-nonspecific binding and regulation of p53 binding, we have analyzed DNA recognition by these C-terminal isoforms. Using atomic force microscopy, we show for the first time that all C-terminal isoforms recognize superhelical DNA. It is particularly noteworthy that a sequence-specific p53 consensus binding site is bound by p53α and β isoforms with similar affinities, whilst p53α shows higher binding to a quadruplex sequence than both p53β and p53γ, and p53γ loses preferential binding to both the consensus binding sequence and the quadruplex-forming sequence. 19. Intra- and inter-individual variability in the underwater pull-out technique in 200 m breaststroke turns.

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the intra- and inter-individual variability in arm-leg coordination during the underwater phase of the turn segment in 200 m breaststroke. Thirteen male swimmers were recruited and performed a 200 m breaststroke in a pre-calibrated 25 m pool. Sub-phases during the underwater segment were obtained using a notational analysis, and the mean velocity, displacement and duration during each sub-phase were obtained. A hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) was performed using the analysed variables in all phases to identify inter-individual variability and random intra-individual variability. In addition, a linear mixed model (LMM: lap as a fixed effect and the participant as a random effect) was conducted to investigate systematic intra-individual variability. HCA identified three coordination patterns that were distinguished by the timing of the dolphin kick relative to the arm pull-out and the duration of the glide with arms at the side. All swimmers except one performed the arm pull-out after the dolphin kick. Nine swimmers maintained one coordination pattern, but other swimmers switched their coordination during the trial, particularly by shortening the duration of the glide with arms at the side. LMM showed a linear decrease (from the first to the last turn) in the time gap between the end of the dolphin kick and the start of the arm pull-out (a glide with the streamlined body position; F = 9.64, p = 0.034) and the glide duration with the arms at the side (F = 11.66, p = 0.015). New records are provided for the following species: P. davidorum Hájek, Alarie, Šťastný & Vondráček, 2019 from Jiangxi, P. dissimilis (Sharp, 1873) from Guangxi, P. gemellatus Šťastný, 2003 from Hunan and Zhejiang, P. kashmiranus lemberki Šťastný, 2003 from Xizang and P. nanlingensis Šťastný, 2003 from Jiangxi. Additional records are also given for most other Chinese species. Platynectes kashmiranus kashmiranus J. Balfour-Browne, 1944 is removed from the Chinese fauna. The habitus of all and the male genitalia of most species are illustrated. An updated key to all Chinese species of Platynectes is provided.

Objectives: To investigate the arm-leg coordination from different perspectives of motor control during the underwater start sequence to understand whether differences exist between the three competitive breaststroke swimming events., Design: Cross-sectional study., Methods: Forty-one breaststroke races (with race times relative to the world record): 50-meter (n = 14, 87.6%), 100-meter (n = 14, 88.5%) and 200-meter (n = 13, 85.4%) were recorded. A race analysis system tracked the two-dimensional displacement of the head. Key points from the underwater start sequence were obtained from notational analysis in order to compute seven time-gaps and four phases to assess the arm-leg coordination and timing of the dolphin kick. A one-way ANOVA with Bonferroni post-hoc correction was used to assess differences between the time gaps and phases for the three events., Results: Differences between the three events were found for total underwater glide, and the first (T0) and second (T1) major glide phase. No differences between the events were found in relative duration and distance for the time gaps related to arm-leg coordination (T1-3, T4, T6) and timing of the dolphin kick (T4-5) during the underwater start sequence., Conclusions: The arm-leg coordination and timing of the dolphin kick showed no difference between the events, but the total underwater glide duration was longer in both the 100- and 200-meter compared with the 50-meter start. This shows that swimmers did not change the complex inter-limb coordination between the competitive events, but only modified the least complex movement, gliding, to adapt to the swimming speed of the respective events., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors. Abstract

R-loops are common non-B nucleic acid structures formed by a three-stranded nucleic acid composed of an RNA-DNA hybrid and a displaced single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) loop. Because the aberrant R-loop formation leads to increased mutagenesis, hyper-recombination, rearrangements, and transcription-replication collisions, it is regarded as important in human diseases. Therefore, its prevalence and distribution in genomes are studied intensively. However, in silico tools for R-loop prediction are limited, and therefore, we have developed the R-loop tracker tool, which was implemented as a part of the DNA Analyser web server. This new tool is focused upon (1) prediction of R-loops in genomic DNA without length and sequence limitations; (2) integration of R-loop tracker results with other tools for nucleic acids analyses, including Genome Browser; (3) internal cross-evaluation of in silico results with experimental data, where available; (4) easy export and correlation analyses with other genome features and markers; and (5) enhanced visualization outputs. Our new R-loop tracker tool is freely accessible on the web pages of DNA Analyser tools, and its implementation on the web-based server allows effective analyses not only for DNA segments but also for full chromosomes and genomes.

G-quadruplexes contribute to the regulation of key molecular processes. Their utilization for antiviral therapy is an emerging field of contemporary research. Here we present comprehensive analyses of the presence and localization of putative G-quadruplex forming sequences (PQS) in all viral genomes currently available in the NCBI database (including subviral agents). The G4Hunter algorithm was applied to a pool of 11,000 accessible viral genomes representing 350 Mbp in total. PQS frequencies differ across evolutionary groups of viruses, and are enriched in repeats, replication origins, 5'UTRs and 3'UTRs. Importantly, PQS presence and localization is connected to viral lifecycles and corresponds to the type of viral infection rather than to nucleic acid type; while viruses routinely causing persistent infections in Metazoa hosts are enriched for PQS, viruses causing acute infections are significantly depleted for PQS. The importance of gene expression regulation in viruses based upon G-quadruplex may point to its potential utilization in therapeutic targeting. Here, we present analyses as to the occurrence of putative G-quadruplex-forming sequences (PQS) in all reference viral dsDNA genomes and evaluate their dependence on PQS occurrence in host organisms using the G4Hunter tool. PQS frequencies differ across host taxa without regard to GC content. The overlay of PQS with annotated regions reveals the localization of PQS in specific regions. While abundance in some, such as repeat regions, is shared by all groups, others are unique. There is abundance within introns of Eukaryota-infecting viruses, but depletion of PQS in introns of bacteria-infecting viruses. We reveal a significant positive correlation between PQS frequencies in dsDNA viruses and corresponding hosts from archaea, bacteria, and eukaryotes. A strong relationship between PQS in a virus and its host indicates their close coevolution and evolutionarily reciprocal mimicking of genome organization.

Abstract

The importance of unusual DNA structures in the regulation of basic cellular processes is an emerging field of research. Amongst local non-B DNA structures, G-quadruplexes (G4s) have gained in popularity during the last decade, and their presence and functional relevance at the DNA and RNA level has been demonstrated in a number of viral, bacterial, and eukaryotic genomes, including humans. Here, we performed the first systematic search of G4-forming sequences in all archaeal genomes available in the NCBI database. In this article, we investigate the presence and locations of G-quadruplex forming sequences using the G4Hunter algorithm. G-quadruplex-prone sequences were identified in all archaeal species, with highly significant differences in frequency, from 0.037 to 15.31 potential quadruplex sequences per kb. While G4 forming sequences were extremely abundant in Hadesarchaea archeon (strikingly, more than 50% of the Hadesarchaea archaeon isolate WYZ-LMO6 genome is a potential part of a G4-motif), they were very rare in the Parvarchaeota phylum. The presence of G-quadruplex forming sequences does not follow a random distribution with an over-representation in non-coding RNA, suggesting possible roles for ncRNA regulation. These data illustrate the unique and non-random localization of G-quadruplexes in Archaea.

The importance of DNA structure in the regulation of basic cellular processes is an emerging field of research. Among local non-B DNA structures, inverted repeat (IR) sequences that form cruciforms and G-rich sequences that form G-quadruplexes (G4) are found in all prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms and are targets for regulatory proteins. We analyzed IRs and G4 sequences in the genome of the most important biotechnology microorganism, S. cerevisiae. IR and G4-prone sequences are enriched in specific genomic locations and differ markedly between mitochondrial and nuclear DNA. While G4s are overrepresented in telomeres and regions surrounding tRNAs, IRs are most enriched in centromeres, rDNA, replication origins and surrounding tRNAs. Mitochondrial DNA is enriched in both IR and G4-prone sequences relative to the nuclear genome. Motivation: Expanding research highlights the importance of guanine quadruplex structures. In this study, we analyzed the presence and locations of G-quadruplex-forming sequences by G4Hunter in all complete bacterial genomes available in the NCBI database. G-quadruplex-forming sequences were identified in all species, however the frequency differed significantly across evolutionary groups. The highest frequency of G-quadruplex forming sequences was detected in the subgroup Deinococcus-Thermus, and the lowest frequency in Thermotogae. G-quadruplex forming sequences are non-randomly distributed and are favored in various evolutionary groups. G-quadruplex-forming sequences are enriched in ncRNA segments followed by mRNAs. Analyses of surrounding sequences showed G-quadruplex-forming sequences around tRNA and regulatory sequences. These data point to the unique and non-random localization of G-quadruplex-forming sequences in bacterial genomes.

Abstract

Chronic heart failure is a progressive disease with an increasing prevalence. In spite of all medical progress (or thanks to it), it is finally one of the most common causes of death. Palliative care is an approach aimed to improve the quality of life of patients and their families in cases of life-threatening illness. Therefore, the use of palliative care in cardiology is entirely relevant. Estimating the course and prognosis of a patient with chronic heart failure is difficult despite many prognostic tools. This makes it difficult to find the moment when palliative care is to begin. In general, gradual accentuation of treatment is recommended, focusing on the symptoms of the chronic progressive disease trajectory, and a reassessment of the benefit and potential adverse effects of conventional therapy. The main aspects of palliative care in cardiology are: 1. long-term communication with the patient and the family and their continuous education; 2. symptom-based treatment; 3. planning of advanced care; 4. A multidisciplinary team trying to meet all the patient's personality needs. Accepting palliative care as a part of complex care is a great challenge for the future of cardiology in the Czech Republic.Key words: heart failure, palliative care, cardiology.

Abstract

Agabus (Acatodes) abaensis sp. nov., from northern Sichuan and south-western Gansu provinces (China) is described and its relevant diagnostic characters are illustrated. The new species is, with some hesitation, classified within the A. confinis species group. Agabus abaensis sp. nov. differs from all species in the group by the combination of the following characters: elytral sculpture with considerably large, distinctly double reticulation in both sexes, and male anterior protarsal claw dentate-the characters resembling some species of the A. arcticus species group. The systematic position of the new species is briefly discussed.
