This paper studied the use of eye movement data to form criteria for judging whether pilots perceive emergency information such as cockpit warnings. In the experiment, 12 subjects randomly encountered different warning information while flying a simulated helicopter, and their eye movement data were collected synchronously. Firstly, the importance of the eye movement features was calculated by ANOVA (analysis of variance). According to the sorting of the importance and the Euclidean distance of each eye movement feature, the warning information samples with different eye movement features were obtained. Secondly, the residual shrinkage network modules were added to CNN (convolutional neural network) to construct a DRSN (deep residual shrinkage networks) model. Finally, the processed warning information samples were used to train and test the DRSN model. In order to verify the superiority of this method, the DRSN model was compared with three machine learning models, namely SVM (support vector machine), RF (radom forest) and BPNN (backpropagation neural network). Among the four models, the DRSN model performed the best. When all eye movement features were selected, this model detected pilot perception of warning information with an average accuracy of 90.4%, of which the highest detection accuracy reached 96.4%. Experiments showed that the DRSN model had advantages in detecting pilot perception of warning information.

Our aim was to explore the prognostic role of baseline albumin-bilirubin levels (ALBI) on the efficacy of immunotherapy in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).This retrospective study enrolled 58 cases of advanced NSCLC patients who received immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy from January 2019 to February 2022 in People's Hospital of Macheng. Patients were grouped according to the levels of baseline ALBI. The corresponding cut-off values ​​were determined by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. We also assessed potential predictive models for predicting efficacy of immunotherapy in advanced NSCLC.The median overall survival (OS) was not reached. The median OS of patients with PS ≤ 1 after immunotherapy was significantly longer than that of PS ≥ 2, which was NR vs. 6.67 months (HR=0.14, 95% CI: 0.05-0.46; p0.01). The risk of death for patients with low ALBI (-2.52) was significantly lower than that of patients with high ALBI (HR=0.28, 95% CI: 0.08-0.94; p=0.03). Univariate analysis showed that baseline ALBI and PS were factors significantly affecting OS in patients with advanced NSCLC after immunotherapy (p0.05 for all). The combination of ALBI and PS showed a good predictive value in prognosis of these patients after immunotherapy (p0.01).The baseline ALBI and PS may serve as prognostic factors for advanced NSCLC patients treated with immunotherapy.

To investigate the epidemiological characteristics of malaria and implementation of the "1-3-7" approach in malaria elimination in Yunnan Province, so as to provide the data support for the development of post-elimination surveillance interventions.All data pertaining to malaria cases in Yunnan Province from 2014 to 2019 were captured from the Notifiable Disease Reporting System of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and the changes in the epidemic situation of malaria were analyzed during the 5-year period. In addition, the core indexes regarding the "1-3-7" approach in malaria elimination of Yunnan Province from 2014 to 2019 were retrieved from the Malaria Control System in the Parasitic Disease Information Reporting System, and all changes in the indexes were descriptively analyzed.During the period from 2014 to 2019, a total of 2 283 malaria cases were reported in Yunnan Province, including 1 927 cases with vivax malaria, 326 cases with plasmodium malaria, 29 cases with other species of malaria, and one case with unidentified species. There were 64 local cases, 2 219 overseas imported cases. Among the 2 283 malaria cases, the male/female ratio was 4.58∶1, and 80.25% of the cases were aged from 15 to 50 years. Farmer (70.00%) was the predominant occupation, and 76.70% (1 751/2 283) of the cases were identified in 25 border counties (districts). Malaria cases were reported in each month during the 5-year period, and the number of malaria cases increased from April, peaked on May to July, and started to decline on August. From 2014 to 2019, the reporting rate of malaria cases within 24 hours upon diagnosis was 100%, and the detection of malaria cases was 99.69% (2 276/ 2 283) in the laboratory, with a 99.65% (2 275/2 283) rate of definite diagnosis. In addition, the percentage of individual epidemiological investigations within 3 days was 100.00% (2 283/2 283), and the number of epidemic foci survey and treatment within 7 days was 576 during the 3-year period from 2017 to 2019. The goal of malaria elimination was achieved in Yunnan Province on June, 2020.Malaria has been eliminated in Yunnan Province, and management of overseas imported malaria is the primary challenge to consolidate the malaria elimination achievements in the future. However, the approach in malaria elimination remains to be maintained, and the role of the Yunnan Provincial Malaria Diagnostic Reference Laboratory requires to be strengthened.

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of microRNA-233-5p (miR-233-5p) in spinal cord injury (SCI), and to explore the possible underlying mechanism.Microglia were first isolated from neonate rats and cultured in a suitable environment in vitro. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and interleukin-4 (IL-4) were used to activate microglia. The expressions of miR-223-5p, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and arginase 1 (Arg-1) were measured by qRT-PCR, respectively. After transfection of miR-233-5p inhibitor, the expression levels of miR-223-5p, iNOS and Arg-1 in cells were detected as well. A moderate SCI model was successfully established in rats (10 g fallen on T10 spinal cord at the height of 5 cm). Subsequently, inflammation indexes at miR-223-5p peak moment were observed. Meanwhile, its neuro-protective effect at 28 days after SCI was estimated. Finally, Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan (BBB) rating scale was applied to evaluate the hindlimb locomotor function of rats at 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28 days after SCI.MiR-223-5p inhibitor significantly promoted M2 microglia expression and degenerated M1 microglia expression in vitro. SCI elevated the level of miR-223-5p in injured spinal cord tissues within one week, which reached a peak at 5 days after injury. Meanwhile, miR-223-5p inhibitor remarkably reduced the expressions of inflammatory factors, including interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) at 3 days after SCI, as well as increased neuregulin1 (NRG-1) expression. However, miR-223-5p inhibitor significantly declined the levels of apoptosis key enzyme-caspase-3 and glia reaction marker-glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) at 7 and 28 days after SCI, respectively. As a result, BBB rating scale demonstrated that hindlimb locomotor function was significantly recovered in miR-223-5p injection group.MiR-223-5p was up-regulated in M1 microglia, whereas down-regulated in M2 microglia. MiR-223-5p inhibitor could significantly increase M2 microglia expression, while decrease M1 microglia expression in vitro. In vivo, miR-223-5p inhibitor suppressed the inflammatory response and reinforced NRG-1 level to reduce glia reaction and neuron apoptosis. Thereby, its treatment promoted the hindlimb locomotor function of rats.

Athetis lepigone (Moschler) is a new agronomic pest which has caused serious damages to summer maize in China. In order to effectively monitor it, it is necessary to carry-out a worldwide investigation on its potential geographical distribution. In this study, we give two ecological niche models, Genetic Algorithm for Rule-set Production and Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt), to predict the potential geographical distribution of A. lepigone. The results indicate that the suitable areas for A. lepigone are mainly in China (Beijing, Tianjin, central and southern Hebei, northern Jiangsu, Shandong, most of Henan, northern Anhui, central and southern Shanxi, central and southern Shaanxi, small parts of north-west in Hubei, eastern Gansu, parts of Ningxia, western of Xinjiang and Dandong, and Liaoning) and other Asian countries (South Korea, North Korea and Japan). Parts of Europe (south-western Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Slovenia, and Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, parts of Austria, western Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany, northern Italy, Denmark, western Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, southern Finland and Sweden) are also highly suitable for A. lepigone. In addition, in the states of the USA including Michigan, New York, Chicago, Missouri, Ohio, Illinois and Indiana are also favourable for its occurrence although till now no reports about of this species has been recorded. A jackknife test in MaxEnt showed that the mean temperature of the driest quarter was the most important environmental variable affecting the distribution of this pest.

Although GHRH and GHRH-R are recognized as key factors in placental development, little is known about the mechanism(s) of the regulation in trophoblastic cells during placental development. The objective of this study is to determine the potential relationship between the expression levels of GHRH-R and the placental and JEG-3 cell function. Furthermore, we aim to investigate the downstream pathways of GHRH/GHRH-R axis in the control of the JEG-3 cell viability and apoptosis. In this study, we detected the expression pattern of GHRH-R in human chorionic villous tissues and JEG-3 cell. Then, we evaluated the effects of GHRH/GHRH-R and the downstream pathways by using GHRH antagonist (JMR-132) on JEG-3 cell. Our present study found the expressions of GHRH-R in placental villous tissues and JEG-3 cell, and the expression levels of GHRH-R was significantly lower in villous tissues of early pregnancy loss when compared to normal controls. JMR-132 inhibited cellular viability and induced apoptosis in JEG-3 cell in a time and dosedependent manners through activation of caspase-3, p38, and p53, as well as inhibition of phosphorylation of Akt. Interestingly, ER stress markers such as GRP78, ubiquitinated proteins and phospho-eIF2α were significantly increased in JEG-3 cell after being treated with JMR-132. Conversely, pretreated with salubrinal (a selective inhibition of protein phosphatase 1-mediated eIF2α dephosphorylation), JEG-3 cells were rescued from JMR-132-mediated cell growth inhibition, and abolished JMR-132-induced cleaved caspase-3, CHOP, phospho-p53, and ubiquitinated proteins accumulation. Knockdown of endogenous GHRH-R significantly abolished the JMR-132-induced cleaved caspase-3 and activation of p38. In conclusion, our results, for the first time, demonstrated the expression levels of GHRH-R were closely related to the placental function. Inhibition of GHRH-R by using GHRH antagonist in JEG-3 cell may reduce cell viability and induce apoptosis through inactivation of Akt and ER stress via phosphorylation of eIF2α. These observations have enriched our understanding on the function of GHRH/GHRH-R axis and the downstream pathways in the control of the placental development. The Most Important Aspect of the Paper: Our present study for the first time provided evidences that GHRH and GHRH-R loops involve in JEG-3 cell viability and apoptosis through Akt and eIF2α pathways.

Flood forecasting for small basins in hilly areas is often plagued by poor performance of hydrological models due to lack of observed data, meanwhile, the traditional Back Propagation (BP) neural network is easy to fall into the local minimum. This paper put forward an approach combined Genetic Algorithms (GA) with BP neural network and established a GA-BP neural network model to promote the flood forecasting. The flood hygrograph of Fenglingang small watershed, in Chun’an county, simulated by GA-BP model indicates that the deviation of runoff volumes is controlled within 10%, the deviation of peak discharge is kept below 20%, and absolute error of time to peak is less than 2h. Additionally, the correlation coefficient of simulation result of GA-BP model for each rainstorm event is above 0.75, which is smaller than that of traditional BP model. Consequently, it is demonstrated that the GA-BP model has a higher simulation precision and can provide reference for local forecasting in the future.

In this work, barium ferrite films were deposited onto sapphire substrates by radio frequency magnetron sputtering. A thin amorphous barium ferrite film of about 20 nm was deposited at low temperature as a buffer layer. Barium ferrite films with thicknesses of 100 nm, 1 μm and 8 μm have been prepared. The results show that the 8-μm-thick barium ferrite films have no cracks whereas the barium ferrite films without amorphous buffer layer break and peel off. The barium ferrite films with a thickness of 100 nm show good c-axis orientation and strong magnetic anisotropy. The c-axis orientation deteriorates, and the magnetic anisotropy disappears gradually with the increase of the thickness of the barium ferrite films. The barium ferrite films with a thickness of 8 μm orientate randomly and show magnetic isotropy. The thickness effects may be explained by the increase of the random nucleation sites.

The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of PTPN12 in human breast cancer and its role in predicting the efficacy of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) for breast cancer.The PTPN12 expression levels were assessed by immunohistochemical staining in 114 breast cancer patients. The correlation of PTPN12 with clinicopathological features was also analyzed. Multivariate logistic regression was used to explore the effect of PTPN12 expression in predicting clinical response.We observed a significant association of PTPN12 expression with cTNM classification. The overall pathological complete response (pCR) rate was 23.2 % in high PTPN12 expression group, whereas it was 5.2% in low PTPN12 expression group. The multivariate regression analyses further indicated that clinical response correlated with PTPN12 expression level and cycles of NACT, and CEX regimen was associated with the overall pathological complete response. In addition, Spearman rank correlation analyses suggested that higher PTPN12 expression indicated better clinical response in breast cancer patients. Furthermore, PTPN12 expression statistically related with pathological response in TNBC and Luminal B subtypes, as assessed by Pearson Chi-square test or Fisher's exact test.Our study informed that cTNM classification is an independent risk factor for PTPN12 expression and PTPN12 is an independent predictor to clinical remission.

Summary What is known and Objective: Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) are among the most commonly used antihypertensive agents worldwide. Factors associated with their discontinuation in clinical practice are not well defined as studies undertaken in different ethnic populations have yielded conflicting result. We aimed to identify predictors of ACEI discontinuation among Chinese patients. Methods: We used a validated clinical database for this cohort study. We included all adult patients aged ≥18 years who visited any primary care clinic in one Territory of Hong Kong and who were prescribed an ACEI from January 2004 to June 2007. The cumulative incidence of discontinuation 180 days after prescription of an ACEI was measured. Factors associated with discontinuation were evaluated by multiple regression analyses. Results: Among 9398 eligible patients, 14·0% discontinued their prescriptions. After controlling for patient’s age, gender, socio-economic status, service type, district of residence, visit type and number of comorbidities, patients aged 70 or above [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1·27, 95% CI 1·04–1·56, P = 0·022], male subjects (AOR = 1·21, 95% CI 1·05–1·40, P = 0·008), new visitors (AOR = 0·64, 95% CI 0·55–0·75, P

SUMMARY Aims: Dyslipidaemia is a poorly-controlled condition in clinical practice largely because of poor adherence to medication regimens by patients. This study evaluated the levels of and factors associated with adherence to lipid-lowering agents in a large Chinese population. Methods: From a validated clinical database, we included all patients who attended any public, primary care clinics in one large Territory of Hong Kong for medication refill at least twice during the study period January 2004 to June 2007. The major outcome variable was Medication Possession Ratio (MPR), an internationally-recognised metric to measure drug adherence. The factors associated with optimal drug adherence (MPR ‡ 0.8) were evaluated by multivariate regression analysis. Results: From 11,042 eligible patients, 90% were adherent. After adjusting for patients’ age, gender, socioeconomic status, service type, district of residence, visit type (new visits vs. follow-up visits), the number of comorbidities and the drug class (statin vs. fibrates), older patients [aged 50‐59 years; adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 1.30, p = 0.009; 60‐69 years; AOR 1.53, p < 0.001; ‡ 70 years; AOR 1.72, p < 0.001], attendance in family medicine specialist clinics (FMSC; AOR 1.56, p < 0.001), follow-up visits (AOR 2.93, p < 0.001) and the presence of comorbidities (one comorbidity; AOR 1.45, p < 0.001; ‡ 2 comorbidities; AOR 1.56, p < 0.001) were associated with optimal drug adherence. Discussion and Conclusion: These findings carry an implication that younger subjects, new patients, visitors in clinics other than FMSC and those without comorbidities should receive more meticulous monitoring of their medication-taking behaviour. Future studies should evaluate the major reasons for nonadherence among them. What’s known Dyslipidaemia is one of the most common disorders encountered in patient consultations and nonadherence to lipid-lowering agents could lead to adverse clinical outcomes. There are very few largescale studies evaluating the levels of ‐ and factors associated with ‐ adherence to these medications, which are crucial to inform clinical practice.

Monosialotetrahexosylganglioside (GM₁) prepared from the brain of pig or bovine is an effective clinical drug in the treatment of different nervous system diseases. Generally, polysialogangliosides are transformed into GM₁ by enzymic or chemical hydrolysis due to the very poor level of natural GM₁.To continuously obtain GM₁ by cell immobilization in a packed-bed reactor.Brevibacterium casei, which is Gram-positive bacteria belonging to the order Actinomyces and family Brevibacteriaceae, can produce high-activity sialidase, are encapsulated in silk fibroin hydrogel, and subsequently packed into a reactor. The crude ganglioside is pumped into the reactor and continuously turned to GM₁.The optimal silk fibroin concentration for hydrogel preparation is 6.0% (w/v). The optimal initial biomass for immobilization is ~12% (wet weight). The optimal conversion conditions are 35 °C and 6 mL/min of flow rate. Under above conditions, the maximum GM₁ productive strength and conversion ratio can reach to 4.2 g/L·h and 313.5%, respectively.Silk fibroin is a promising material for cell immobilization because it has predominant characteristics of higher permeability and intensity. Cell immobilization for continuous GM₁ transformation could eliminate the asialo GM₁ and decrease the foreign matter from transfer medium and metabolism product.In the packed-bed reactor, continuous production of GM₁ had been under effective running at least for 15 days indicating a potential for industrial production. It is significant that this is a first report on cell immobilization for GM₁ production.

Summary What is known and Objective: Good compliance to anti-hypertensive medications has been recognized as a crucial factor to achieve optimal blood pressure control, but there were few studies addressing this issue among ethnic Chinese patients. This study aims to evaluate the factors associated with compliance to thiazide diuretics in a Chinese hypertensive population. Methods: From a clinical database, all adult Chinese patients aged ≥18 years who were prescribed a thiazide diuretic from the public health care sector in one large Territory of Hong Kong during January 2004 to June 2007 and attended at least twice for anti-hypertensive drug refill were included. Medication Possession Ratios were used to measure drug compliance for each patient, with a level ≥80% defined as compliant. We used binary logistic regression analysis to evaluate the factors associated with good compliance. Results and Discussion: From 8551 eligible patients, 84·5% were compliant (defined as MPR ≥ 80%). Few studies address the profiles of antihypertensive compliance among ethnic Chinese. The levels of and factors associated with antihypertensive drug compliance among Chinese patients were evaluated in this study.All Chinese hypertensive patients who paid at least two consecutive visits in any government primary care clinics for antihypertensive drug refill in a large territory of Hong Kong from January 2004 to June 2007 were included. Medication possession ratio (MPR), defined as the ratio of total days of medication supplied (not including the last prescription) to total days in a period of time, was used a measure of drug compliance.From 83,884 eligible patients, 71,685 (85.5%) had good compliance to antihypertensive drugs (MPRor=80%). Binary logistic regression analysis was conducted, with good compliance as the outcome variable while controlling for potential confounders. Advanced age (adjusted ORs (aOR) 1.36-1.55, p0.001), female gender (aOR for male patients 0.84, 95% CI 0.80 to 0.87, p0.001), payment of fees (aOR 1.14, 95% CI 1.09 to 1.19, p0.001), attendance in family medicine specialist clinic (aOR 1.52, 95% CI 1.40 to 1.66, p0.001), follow-up visits (aOR 3.21, 95% CI 3.06 to 3.36, p0.001) and use of drugs acting on the renin-angiotensin system (aOR 1.18, 95% CI 1.07 to 1.30, p=0.001) were positively associated with good compliance to drugs. Use of β-blockers was negatively associated with drug compliance (aOR 0.78, 95% CI 0.73 to 0.84, p0.001).Physicians should practice caution when prescribing antihypertensive drugs to patients with these factors where closer monitoring of their compliance patterns is warranted.

Micrometer sized particles of lizardite-1T phase are observed in toluene solvent. Phase identification is carried out by selected-area electron diffraction experiment and simulation. TEM study shows that the particles are in flake forms with the (001) preferred orientation. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectra reveal some particles containing Mg and Si, and others containing Al and Si. Structural deterioration of the lizardite-1T phase occurs under relative higher dose of electron beams. The results of this characterization of lizardite-1T particles show the importance of beam-induced deterioration and emphasize the potential importance of such deterioration in the characterization of nano scale systems.

The Escherichia coli Ffh protein is homologous to the SRP54 subunit of the eukaryotic signal recognition particle (SRP) that is involved in targeting and translocation of membrane proteins. The functions of Ffh in E. coli were investigated using the mutant with the Ffh deficiency. The mutant showed lower growth rate at 30°C and rapidly lost viability at the non-permissive temperature of 42°C. In addition, the amount of the total membrane proteins decreased sharply in the mutant. The mutant cells cultured at either 30 or 42°C appeared to have an elongated shape as compared to the wild type cells. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the membrane layer of the mutant cells was thinner than that of the wild type cells.

We performed annealing control primer (ACP)-based differential-display reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (DDRT-PCR) to isolate differentially expressed genes (DEGs) from the stage IV ovary and ovotestis of the rice field eel, Monopterus albus. Using 20 arbitrary ACP primers, 14 DEG expressed-sequence tags were identified and sequenced. The transcriptional expression of one DEG, G2, was significantly greater in the ovotestis than the stage IV ovary. To understand the role of G2 in sex inversion, G2 cDNA was cloned and semi-RT-PCR, real time PCR were performed during gonad development. The full-length G2 cDNA was 650 base pairs (bp) and it comprised a 5′-untranslated region (UTR) of 82 bp, a 3′-UTR of 121 bp and an open reading frame of 444 bp that encoded a 148-amino acid protein. The expression of G2 was weak during early ovarian development until the stage IV ovary, but expression increased significantly with gonad development. We speculate that G2 may play an important function during sex inversion and testis development in the rice field eel, but the full details of the function of this gene requires further research.

In this report, two mode converters are designed and fabricated to extract TE 41 and TE 01 modes for the generations of 0.4 THz and 1 THz signal by high-harmonic interaction with gyrating electron beam, respectively. The purities of the desired modes in these two converters are both higher than 90% with remarkably broad bandwidth (380 GHz to 420 GHz for TE 41 mode and 910GHz to 995 GHz for TE 01 mode). Since the geometrical aspect ratios of the designed mode converters are both larger than 5, it is too difficult to realize them by the traditional machining processes and UV lithography. We therefore employed X-ray lithography to fabricate these designs, which will be characterized by THz time-domain spectroscopy.

In order to elucidate the effects of chilling-stress at night on photosystem 2 (PS2) efficiency under dim irradiance (DI), mango leaves were chilled to varied extent (8–3 °C) and for varied duration (0–12 h) in growth cabinets in the dark, and then exposed to DI (20 μmol m−2 s−1 PPFD) at each chilling-temperature for 1 h. Chilling in the dark had little effect on Fv/Fm of mango leaves. But both the extent and duration of chilling pre-treatments significantly affected Fv’/Fm’ when leaves were exposed to DI. This down-regulation of PS2 efficiency was closely related to xanthophyll de-epoxidation, assessed as photochemical reflectance index (PRI) and calculated from leaf spectral reflectance [(R531 − R570)/(R531 + R570)], and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ). The down-regulation of PS2 is a defence mechanism initiated at predawn in winter to alleviate the damage of PS2 by the sudden and strong irradiation at sunrise. Mango leaves, transferred suddenly from warm and dark room to DI and chilling showed a slight down-regulation of PS2 efficiency, in spite of an increased xanthophyll de-epoxidation. This might have been due to the unavailability of some cofactors required for NPQ.

We propose a design of small-core multiple-layer Bragg waveguide for guiding the THz signal by TE01 mode, which is composed of alternating un-doped silicon (high refractive index) and high-density polyethylene (low refractive index). The group velocity of the THz wave traveling inside this small-core waveguide slows down to below 0.5c, while the propagation loss is less than 0.3 dB per centimeter ranging from 0.95 THz to 1.2 THz, which is better than the traditional metallic tube. Furthermore, a novel scheme is proposed to excite and retrieve the very high-purity TE01 mode in a Bragg waveguide by employing additional Y-type TE01 mode converters. Based on this scheme, for the first time, one is possible to characterize the Bragg TE01 mode in experiment or further apply such wave-guiding system in THz communication or beam-wave interaction for THz generation.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of a temporary ureteral catheter in preventing iatrogenic ureteral damage in cervical cancer patients undergoing laparoscopic radical hysterectomy. All cases had confirmed diagnoses of cervical cancer preoperatively between December 2008 and December 2012 in our hospital and were in clinical stages IA2 to IIA. In total, 176 laparoscopic radical hysterectomy and lymphadenectomy procedures were performed. The 176 cases were divided into two groups: ureteral catheters were installed using cystoscopy before the operation in 86 patients (group A), and ureteral catheters were not placed in 90 patients (group B). These cases were retrospectively analyzed based on postoperative hospitalization time and intraoperative and postoperative complications. A total of 6 cases (3.41%) had ureteral injuries, and 4 of the cases (4.65%) of ureteral injuries occurred in group A. In two of these cases, urinary leaking appeared at the post-operative 8th and 9th days and at the 10th and 25th days, respectively. There were 2 cases (2.22%) of ureteral injuries in group B: 1 case of intraoperative direct injury and the other of urinary leaking, which appeared at post-operative day 21. Statistically significant differences between the two groups were observed in operating time and the incidence of hemorrhage, hematuria (including microscopic hematuria), post-operative urinary tract infection, and pain (P < 0.05). A ureteral catheter that is placed preoperatively can help to identify the ureter in laparoscopic radical hysterectomy, but does not decrease the incidence of ureteral injury.

A fatigue testing system is established with which the real-time recording of stress, strain, temperature, and hysteresis loss of rubbers or cord-rubber composite specimens subjected to periodic loading or extension can be successfully carried out. Several problems are connected with the experimental study of the fatigue of rubber composites. In constant extension cycling, the specimen becomes relaxed because of the viscoelasticity of rubber composites, and the imposed tension-tension deformation becomes complex. In this method, the specimen is unlikely to fail unless the imposed extensions are very large. Constant load cycling can avoid the shortcomings of constant extension cycling. The specially designed clamps ensure that the specimen does not slip when the load retains a constant value. The Deformation and fatigue damage accumulation processes of rubber composites under periodic loading are also examined. Obviously, the effect of cycle frequency on the fatigue life of rubber composites can not be ignored because of the viscoelasticity of constituent materials. The increase of specimen surface temperature is relatively small in the case of 1 Hz, but the temperature can easily reach 100°C at the 8 Hz frequency. A method for evaluating the fatigue behavior of tires is proposed.

Although Saccular intracranial aneurysm (sIA) is the most common type abnormality of all intracranial aneurysms, the biological mechanisms of sIA are not fully understood.We downloaded microarray datasets from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database which includes 11 ruptured intracranial aneurysm samples and 8 unruptured intracranial aneurysm samples. Significant Analysis of Microarray (SAM) was employed to identify the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between ruptured and unruptured intracranial aneurysms.We found 2129 genes differentially expressed in rupture sIA, of which 1062 genes up-regulated and 1057 genes down-regulated. Functional analysis demonstrated these genes were significantly associated with inflammatory response, wounding response and defense response. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) analysis revealed that these genes may play important roles in the pathogenesis of sIAs. Results suggested that four transcription factors (TFs) could cooperated with each other, together with several microRNAs play roles in the pathonegensis of ruptured sIAs.All of above results indicate the existence of DEGs between ruptured and unruptured sIAs, which regulating the pathogenesis of ruptured sIAs. TFs and microRNAs may also play key roles in ruptured sIAs. This research hints a new thought to the therapy of ruptured sIAs.

In this study, hydrogeochemical and stable environmental isotopic (oxygen-18 and deuterium) data of groundwater in the Horgos River watershed in the north-western Ili Basin were examined to determine the groundwater chemical characteristics, as well as the origins of the groundwater and surface water. The quaternary aquifer's structure and spatial distribution is complex. Hydrogeochemical data shows that the groundwater is alkaline due to the presence of bicarbonate as the dominant anion. In the north, the dominant groundwater cation was Ca2+ while Mg2+ ions were highest in the south. In addition, water types varied from HCO3-SO4-Ca and HCO3-SO4-Ca-Mg to HCO3-SO4-Mg-Ca and SO4-HCO3-Mg-Ca. Overall, the groundwater in this study showed high total hardness. The dissolving and evaporation inspissation were considered the main controlling factors. Isotopic data (oxygen-18 and deuterium) indicated that the Horgos River was the main recharge source for the groundwater, which rapidly infiltrated across sandstone macropores. Furthermore, surface water and shallow groundwater were significantly affected by evaporation.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) are among the most commonly used antihypertensive agents worldwide. Factors associated with their discontinuation in clinical practice are not well defined as studies undertaken in different ethnic populations have yielded conflicting result. We aimed to identify predictors of ACEI discontinuation among Chinese patients.We used a validated clinical database for this cohort study. We included all adult patients aged ≥ 18 years who visited any primary care clinic in one Territory of Hong Kong and who were prescribed an ACEI from January 2004 to June 2007. The cumulative incidence of discontinuation 180 days after prescription of an ACEI was measured. Factors associated with discontinuation were evaluated by multiple regression analyses.Among 9398 eligible patients, 14·0% discontinued their prescriptions. After controlling for patient's age, gender, socio-economic status, service type, district of residence, visit type and number of comorbidities, patients aged 70 or above [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1·27, 95% CI 1·04-1·56, P = 0·022], male subjects (AOR = 1·21, 95% CI 1·05-1·40, P = 0·008), new visitors (AOR = 0·64, 95% CI 0·55-0·75, P0·001), patients who obtained their prescriptions in Family Medicine Specialist Clinic (FMSC) (AOR = 1·43, 95% CI 1·14-1·79, P = 0·002), patients who lived in the less urbanized district (AOR = 1·96, 95% CI 1·55-2·48, P0·001) and the most rural district (AOR = 1·24, 95% CI 1·03-1·49, P = 0·027), and patients with no comorbidity, were more likely to discontinue their medications.Physicians should pay attention to adherence problems particularly when prescribing ACEI to male patients, those who are older than 70 years, have no comorbidity, live in less urbanized or more rural areas, qualify for fee-waiver, are new attendees of consultations or obtain their ACEI prescriptions in FMSC. Future research should evaluate the reasons for ACEI discontinuation among these higher-risk groups.

Good compliance to anti-hypertensive medications has been recognized as a crucial factor to achieve optimal blood pressure control, but there were few studies addressing this issue among ethnic Chinese patients. This study aims to evaluate the factors associated with compliance to thiazide diuretics in a Chinese hypertensive population.From a clinical database, all adult Chinese patients aged ≥ 18 years who were prescribed a thiazide diuretic from the public health care sector in one large Territory of Hong Kong during January 2004 to June 2007 and attended at least twice for anti-hypertensive drug refill were included. Medication Possession Ratios were used to measure drug compliance for each patient, with a level ≥ 80% defined as compliant. We used binary logistic regression analysis to evaluate the factors associated with good compliance.From 8551 eligible patients, 84·5% were compliant (defined as MPR ≥ 80%). Fee payers (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1·28; 95% CI 1·12-1·46, P0·001) and follow-up visitors (aOR 2·47, 95% CI 2·13-2·87, P0·001) were significantly associated with better anti-hypertensive compliance. Patients who were newly prescribed thiazide diuretics and those with poorer socioeconomic status were more likely to be non-compliant to anti-hypertensive therapies. Patients' age, gender and number of co-morbidities were not significant associated factors.Among Chinese patients, those who were newly prescribed thiazide diuretics and those with poorer socioeconomic status were more likely to be non-compliant to anti-hypertensive therapies. Closer monitoring and more intensive compliance-enhancing strategies had to be targeted towards these patients to enhance clinical outcomes.

Spinal dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) may arise at any level from the foramen magnum to the sacrum. Only a few case series of DAVFs at the foramen magnum have been reported, especially with patients presenting with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). We performed a retrospective study of four such cases and summarize experiences in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of a DAVF at the foramen magnum.Four male patients, aged from 35 to 51 years, were admitted with severe headache. The cranial computerized tomography scans of all four patients showed SAH, with hemorrhage in the fourth ventricle with or without hemorrhage in the occipital horns of the lateral ventricles. Pre-operative digital subtraction cerebral angiography showed a DAVF at the foramen magnum draining to medullary veins and/or the straight sinus and the confluence of sinuses. Two DAVFs were fed by the vertebral artery, whilst the others were fed by dural branches of the occipital artery and/or the ascending pharyngeal artery.Three patients underwent direct microsurgical electrocoagulation and disconnection of the arteriovenous shunt via an enlargement of the foramen magnum and a hemilaminectomy at C1 by the far lateral suboccipital approach. Post-operative angiography confirmed complete obliteration of the fistula.Cerebral digital subtraction angiography is an effective and accurate method for examination of a DAVF at the foramen magnum. It can be treated effectively and with minimal surgical trauma by microsurgical electrocoagulation and disconnection of the shunt.

Whether polymer cords embedded in rubber under compression have a reinforcing function is still an important question in the analysis of tire structures. In this paper, on the basis of experimental results, it is confirmed that polymer cords embedded in rubber present some stiffness, thus playing a reinforcing role to a certain extent. When the cord volume fraction in the cord-rubber composite is sufficiently large, the reinforcing function of the polymer cords is so significant that the properties of the cord-rubber composite are mainly influenced by those of the cord. When the compressive stress reaches a certain value, the cord-rubber composite specimen yields by buckling if the cord volume fraction is large enough and the cord angle is within a certain small range. The buckling stress, which may be considered to be a failure stress, decreases with an increase in temperature. On the other hand, the effect of the cord angle on the buckling stress is found to be insignificant.

Summary Eight strains of rotaviruses isolated from diarrheal animals (4 from calves and 4 from piglets) in China were compared by serotyping with reference animal rotavirus strains (bovine NCDV, porcine OSU and simian SA-11 and human rotavirus Wa strain). Two-way cross neutralization test showed no antigenic difference between all 4 local strains of bovine rotavirus (BRV007, BRV014, HN-7 and BRV6555) and reference NCDV, so they belonged to rotavirus serotype 6 (bovine rotavirus serotype 1 or NCDV-serotype). Meanwhile, the four strains of Chinese porcine rotavirus could be determined into 2 different serotypes. One (Li99) was neutralised to a high titer with the antiserum against reference OSU virus and probably related to OSU (serotype 5 or porcine serotype 1). The other three strains (Lin71, Nan86 and Jiang150) were antigenically obviously different from Li99 and did not react with the antiserum against OSU. They were tentatively considered as porcine rotavirus serotype 2. All the strains of bovine and porcine rotavirus did not cross-neutralise with simian SA-11 and human Wa strain. There was also no antigenic relationship between bovine rotaviruses and porcine rotaviruses. Rotavirus has been isolated from many species of animals and human beings all over the world. It is one of the important aetiological agents of diarrhea in new-born animals and infant babies and has been considered as the most important agent of infant diarrhea in China since 1980. However, there are many serotypes of rotaviruses, not only in different species but also in the same species of animals. For the sake of preventing rotavirus infection effectively, it is of great importance to differentiate the serotypes of rotaviruses isolated from different animals in different places. In this paper, the serological relationship of 8 strains of animal rotavirus (4 from piglets and 4 from calves) isolated in China with reference rotavirus strains including bovine NCDV, porcine OSU, simian SA-11 and human Wa is presented.

Wastewater produced during the yeast production has high COD concentration, chroma and turbidity and it is difficult to dissolve the water, which has constrained the development of yeast industry. This thesis researched the process of pretreatment of wastewater from yeast production wastewater. Membrane filtering was introduced to hold back the yeast existed in the wastewater. The filtered water was sent to produce hydrogen in anaerobic environment, while the residue was sent to extract protein. The filtering process utilized the PVDF membrane with an aperture of 0.2μm can hold back the yeast sufficiently. According to the transmembrane pressure, 10days worked as a period to clean the membrane at the aeration of 0.15m3•h-1. The cost as well as the profit is compared, which showed that for a yeast factory which had a daily wastewater production of 1 000m3, the profit could be as high as 1 090 yuan•d-1. Intermittent shake flask tests were conducted to study the difference of hydrogen production between direct anaerobic digestion and anaerobic digestion after filtration. When influent pH was 5.00, the hydrogen percentage of filtered group was 49.69%, which exceeded the group without filtration by 20.34%. The HRT and OLR were tested for CSTR to get the highest hydrogen production through anaerobic fermentation of the filtered yeast industry wastewater. Results showed that, when HRT was 8h and OLR was 24kgCOD•m-3•d-1, the system can get the highest biohydrogen production rate at 13.2L•d-1. This test suggested that MF-CSTR pretreatment process can simultaneously treat yeast industry wastewater effectively and realize resource recovery from yeast protein and energy recovery and utilization from hydrogen, which provides the theoretical foundation for the treatment and resource utilization from yeast industry wastewater.

We report a design of low-loss THz Bragg fibers with a core size on the order of wavelength that operates near the cutoff frequency of its TE01 mode. We also propose a broadband Y-type mode converter based on branched rectangular metallic waveguides to facilitate coupling between the TE01 mode of the Bragg fiber and the TEM mode in free space with 60% efficiency. Our fiber holds strong promise to facilitate beam-wave interaction in gyrotron for high-efficiency THz generation.

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is one of the most aggressive malignancies. We tried to elucidate the possible prognostic factors.A retrospective review was conducted of ATC patients in National Taiwan University Hospital from 1978 to 2003. Their demographic characteristics, clinical presentations, laboratory data and treatment modalities were reviewed. Possible prognostic factors for survival were evaluated.Forty-five patients (14 males and 31 females) of mean age 61.9 +/- 12.6 yr were included in this study. The median survival time was 94 days (range 6 to 776 days). The overall survival rate was 27% at 6 months and 10% at 1 yr. Thirty-two patients receiving intervention regimens had a median survival of 106 days, while 13 patients receiving palliative therapy had a median survival of 39 days. The difference in survival is statistically significant (logrank test, p = 0.017). Adjusted with sex and age, increment in white blood cell count (per 10(9)/l) and serum albumin (per 1.0 g/l) had a hazard ratio of 1.12 (Cox regression, p0.001) and 0.92 (p = 0.041), respectively. Patients with leukocytosis [white blood cell (WBC) count10(10)/l] or hypoalbuminemia (serum albumin35 g/l) had significant shorter survival than patients without leukocytosis or hypoalbuminemia (logrank test p = 0.008 and p = 0.032, respectively). Patients with serum T4 levels lower than 64.35 nmol/l had significantly shorter survival than patients without hypothyroxinemia (median survival 24 vs 128 days, logrank test, p = 0.004).ATC is an aggressive malignancy. Leukocytosis, hypoalbuminemia and hypothyroxinemia indicated poor prognosis. Survival time might be prolonged if intervention treatment is tolerable.

In this paper, we summarized our recent studies on follicular development and ovulation in the presence or absence of thyroxine (T4) and equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) treatment in infertile immature spontaneously hypothyroid rdw rats. T4 therapy once daily from postnatal day 21 to day 29 resulted in increases in ovarian weight on day 30 (P 0.01). Similar populations of both healthy and atretic antral follicles ranging in diameter from 101-400 microm were observed in control rdw and normal rats. T4 treatment markedly increased the numbers of healthy antral follicles of 101-400 microm or larger than 550 microm in diameter in the absence or presence of eCG, respectively, in rdw rats. On the other hand, T4 treatment did not affect the population of atretic antral follicles, but decreased the number of atretic large antral follicles (400 microm) in the presence of eCG. Although a few (5+/-2) eggs were obtained from immature rdw rats treated with gonadotrophins alone, significantly more eggs (85+/-5) were ovulated from females treated with gonadotrophins and T4. As a control, normal littermates ovulated 45 eggs when treated with gonadotrophins only and 68 eggs when to them were also given T4. In conclusion, the results of the present study indicated that T4 treatment improved follicular development in the presence of eCG and significantly increased the number of ovulated eggs following hCG treatment in rdw rats.

We previously reported that rdw rats were infertile in both sexes. The present study was conducted to determine whether hypothyroidism in adult male rdw rats induced infertility by impairing sexual behavior or testicular function, whether the infertility could be reversed by thyroxine (T(4)) treatment, and whether the mutant could be produced by infertile rdw rats via in vitro fertilization. The sexual behavior was analyzed by pairing with normal female rats. The fertility of epididymal sperm was determined by in vitro fertilization. The results indicated that the infertility resulted from both defective sexual behavior and testicular function. No untreated rdw rats mated. The weights of epididymides were significantly low, whereas those of testes were not different from those of untreated normal rats. Epididymal sperm with cytoplasmic droplets were observed at a significantly high frequency. No fertilization was detected either in vivo or in vitro. Thyroxine treatment markedly increased serum T(4) levels and the weights of both epididymides and testes. Partial reversion of the impaired sexual behavior was observed, and the percentage of epididymal sperm with cytoplasmic droplets was markedly decreased after T(4) treatment. Fertility of epididymal sperm was completely reversed when determined both in vivo and in vitro, and homozygous embryos developed to term after transfer without loss of viability.

Phosphatidylcholine is the principal phospholipid in mammalian tissues, and a major source for the production of arachidonic acid. In this study, the effect of exogenous phosphocholine, a precursor of phosphatidylcholine biosynthesis, on the metabolism of phosphatidylcholine in human umbilical vein endothelial cells was investigated. Incubation of endothelial cells with exogenous phosphocholine at concentrations of 1 to 5 mM was found to inhibit choline uptake and its subsequent incorporation into phosphatidylcholine. Phosphocholine appeared to inhibit choline uptake in a competitive manner. Since phosphatidylcholine is metabolized mainly by the action of phospholipase A2, with the release of arachidonic acid and other fatty acids, the effect of phosphocholine on arachidonic acid release in endothelial cells was also examined. The induction of arachidonic acid release by ATP was enhanced in cells treated with 1 mM phosphocholine. In vitro assays of phospholipase A2 activity in cells incubated with phosphocholine, however, did not produced any significant change in the activity of this enzyme. The results of this study show that phosphocholine modulates the biosynthesis and catabolism of phosphatidylcholine in an indirect manner.

Micrometer sized particles of lizardite-1T phase are observed in toluene solvent. Phase identification is carried out by selected-area electron diffraction experiment and simulation. TEM study shows that the particles are in flake forms with the (001) preferred orientation. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectra reveal some particles containing Mg and Si, and others containing Al and Si. Structural deterioration of the lizardite-1T phase occurs under relative higher dose of electron beams. The results of this characterization of lizardite-1T particles show the importance of beam-induced deterioration and emphasize the potential importance of such deterioration in the characterization of nano scale systems.

Lysophosphatidylcholine (lyso-PC) and arachidonate are products of phosphatidylcholine hydrolysis by phospholipase A(2). In this study, the modulation of arachidonate release by exogenous lyso-PC in rat heart myoblastic H9c2 cells was examined. Incubation of H9c2 cells with lyso-PC resulted in an enhanced release of arachidonate in both a time- and dose-dependent fashion. Lyso-PC species containing palmitoyl (C(16:0)) or stearoyl (C(18:0)) groups evoked the highest amount of arachidonate release, while other lysophospholipid species were relatively ineffective. Cells treated with phospholipase A(2) inhibitors resulted in the attenuation of the enhanced arachidonate release in the presence of lyso-PC. Lyso-PC caused the translocation of phospholipase A(2) from the cytosol to the membrane fraction and induced an increase in Ca2+ flux from the medium into the cells. Nimodipine, a specific Ca(2+)-channel blocker, partially attenuated the lyso-PC-induced rise in intracellular Ca2+. Concurrent with Ca2+ influx, lyso-PC caused an enhancement of protein kinase C activity. The lyso-PC-induced arachidonate release was attenuated when cells were pre-incubated with specific protein kinase C and mitogen activated protein kinase kinase inhibitors. Taken together, these results strongly indicate that the lyso-PC-induced increases in levels of intracellular calcium and stimulation of protein kinase C lead to the activation of cytosolic phospholipase A(2) which results in the enhancement of arachidonate release in H9c2 cells.
