Headwater streams are reliant on riparian tree leaf litterfall to fuel brown food webs. Terrestrial agents like herbivores and contaminants can alter plant growth, litter production, litter quality, and the timing of litterfall into streams, influencing aspects of the brown food web. At Mount St. Helens (USA), early successional streams are developing willow (Salix sitchensis) riparian zones. The willows are attacked by stem-boring herbivores, altering litter quality and the timing of litterfall. Within a established experimental plots, willows (male and female plants) were protected from herbivores using insecticides and provided with experimental additions of nitrogen. This enabled us to test the interacting influences of herbivores, nitrogen deposition, and willow sex on leaf litter quality, aquatic litter decomposition, and microbial and invertebrate detritivores. We found weak litter quality effects (higher N and lower C:N) for the herbivore treatment, but no effect of nitrogen deposition. Although litter decomposition rates were not strongly affected by litter treatments, detritivore communities were altered by all treatments. Nitrogen deposition resulted in decreased bacterial richness and decreased fungal diversity in-stream. Aquatic macroinvertebrate communities were influenced by the interacting effects of herbivory and nitrogen addition, with abundances highest in herbivore litter with the greatest N addition. Shredders showed the highest abundance in male, herbivore-attacked litter. The establishment of riparian willows along early successional streams and their interacting effects with herbivores and nitrogen deposition may be influencing detritivore community assembly at Mount St. Helens. More broadly, global changes like increased wet and dry N deposition and expanded ranges of key herbivores might influence tree litter decomposition in many ecosystems.

One-dimensional (1D) van der Waals materials have emerged as an intriguing playground to explore novel electronic and optical effects. We report on inorganic one-dimensional SbPS4 nanotube bundles obtained via mechanical exfoliation from bulk crystals. The ability to mechanically exfoliate SbPS4 nanobundles offers the possibility of applying modern 2D material fabrication techniques to create mixed-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures. We find that SbPS4 can readily be exfoliated to yield long (>10 μm) nanobundles with thicknesses that range from 1.3 to 200 nm. We investigated the optical response of semiconducting SbPS4 nanobundles and discovered that upon excitation with blue light, they emit bright and ultra-broadband red light with a quantum yield similar to that of hBN-encapsulated MoSe2. We discovered that the ultra-broadband red light emission is a result of a large ∼1 eV exciton binding energy and a ∼200 meV exciton self-trapping energy, unprecedented in previous material studies. Due to the bright and ultra-broadband light emission, we believe that this class of inorganic 1D van der Waals semiconductors has numerous potential applications, including on-chip tunable nanolasers, and applications that require ultraviolet to visible light conversion, such as lighting and sensing. Overall, our findings open avenues for harnessing the unique characteristics of these nanomaterials, advancing both fundamental research and practical optoelectronic applications.

Generally, deciduous and evergreen trees coexist in subtropical forests, and both types of leaves are attacked by numerous insect herbivores. However, trees respond and defend themselves from herbivores in different ways, and these responses may vary between evergreen and deciduous species. We examined both the percentage of leaf area removed by herbivores as well as the percentage of leaves attacked by herbivores to evaluate leaf herbivore damage across 14 subtropical deciduous and evergreen tree species, and quantified plant defenses to varying intensities of herbivory. We found that there was no significant difference in mean percentage of leaf area removed between deciduous and evergreen species, yet a higher mean percentage of deciduous leaves were damaged compared to evergreen leaves (73.7% versus 60.2%). Although percent leaf area removed was mainly influenced by hemicellulose concentrations, there was some evidence that the ratio of non-structural carbohydrates:lignin and the concentration of tannins contribute to herbivory. We also highlight that leaf defenses to varying intensities of herbivory varied greatly among subtropical plant species and there was a stronger response for deciduous trees to leaf herbivore (e.g., increased nitrogen or lignin) attack than that of evergreen trees. This work elucidates how leaves respond to varying intensities of herbivory, and explores some of the underlying relationships between leaf traits and herbivore attack in subtropical forests.

As available genomic interval data increase in scale, we require fast systems to search them. A common approach is simple string matching to compare a search term to metadata, but this is limited by incomplete or inaccurate annotations. An alternative is to compare data directly through genomic region overlap analysis, but this approach leads to challenges like sparsity, high dimensionality, and computational expense. We require novel methods to quickly and flexibly query large, messy genomic interval databases. Here, we develop a genomic interval search system using representation learning. We train numerical embeddings for a collection of region sets simultaneously with their metadata labels, capturing similarity between region sets and their metadata in a low-dimensional space. Using these learned co-embeddings, we develop a system that solves three related information retrieval tasks using embedding distance computations: retrieving region sets related to a user query string, suggesting new labels for database region sets, and retrieving database region sets similar to a query region set. We evaluate these use cases and show that jointly learned representations of region sets and metadata are a promising approach for fast, flexible, and accurate genomic region information retrieval.

Large-scale dam removals provide opportunities to restore river function in the long-term and are massive disturbances to riverine ecosystems in the short-term. The removal of two dams on the Elwha River (WA, USA) between 2011 and 2014 was the largest dam removal project to be completed by that time and has since resulted in major changes to channel dynamics, river substrates, in-stream communities, and the size and shape of the river delta. To assess ecosystem function across the restored Elwha watershed, we compared leaf litter decomposition at twenty sites: 1) four tributary sites not influenced by restoration activities; 2) four river sites downstream of the upper dam (Glines Canyon Dam); 3) four river sites within the footprint of the former Aldwell Reservoir upstream of the lower dam (Elwha Dam); 4) four river sites downstream of the lower dam; and 5) four lentic sites in the newly developing Elwha delta. Three major findings emerged: 1) decomposition rates differed among sections of the Elwha watershed, with slowest decomposition rates at the delta sites and fastest decomposition rates just downstream of the upper dam; 2) aquatic macroinvertebrate communities establishing in leaf litterbags differed significantly among sections of the Elwha watershed; and 3) aquatic fungal communities growing on leaf litter differed significantly among sections. Aquatic macroinvertebrate and fungal diversity were sensitive to differences in canopy cover, water chemistry, and river bottom sediments across sites, with a stronger relationship to elevation for aquatic macroinvertebrates. As the Elwha River undergoes recovery following the massive sediment flows associated with dam removal, we expect to see changes in leaf litter processing dynamics and shifts in litter-dependent decomposer communities (both fungal and invertebrate) involved in this key ecosystem process.

The spectrally narrow photoluminescence lines occurring in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) heterostructures at low temperature have been attributed to interlayer excitons (IXs) localized by the moiré potential between the TMD layers. Here, the authors show that these lines are present even when the moiré potential is suppressed by inserting an hBN spacer between the TMD layers.

Abstract Over the past several decades, we have increased our understanding of the influences of plant genetics on associated communities and ecosystem functions. These influences have been shown at both broad spatial scales and across many plant families, creating an active subdiscipline of ecology research focused on genes‐to‐ecosystems connections. One complex aspect of plant genetics is the distinction between males and females in dioecious plants. The genetic determinants of plant sex are poorly understood for most plants, but the influences of plant sex on morphological, physiological, and chemical plant traits are well‐studied. We argue that these plant traits, controlled by plant sex, may have wide‐reaching influences on both terrestrial and aquatic communities and ecosystem processes, particularly for riparian plants. Here we systematically review the influences of plant sex on plant traits, influences of plant traits on terrestrial community members, and how interactions between plant traits and terrestrial community members can influence terrestrial ecosystem functions in riparian forests. We then extend these influences into adjacent aquatic ecosystem functions and aquatic communities to explore how plant sex might influence linked terrestrial‐aquatic systems as well as the physical structure of riparian systems. This review highlights data gaps in empirical studies exploring the direct influences of plant sex on communities and ecosystems but draws inference from community and ecosystem genetics. Overall, this review highlights how variation by plant sex has implications for climate change adaptations in riparian habitats, the evolution and range shifts of riparian species and the methods used for conserving and restoring riparian systems.

Abstract MoSe2–WSe2 heterostructures host strongly bound interlayer excitons (IXs), which exhibit bright photoluminescence (PL) when the twist angle is near 0° or 60°. Over the past several years, there have been numerous reports on the optical response of these heterostructures but no unifying model to understand the dynamics of IXs and their temperature dependence. Here we perform a comprehensive study of the temperature, excitation power, and time-dependent PL of IXs. We observe a significant decrease in PL intensity above a transition temperature that we attribute to a transition from localized to delocalized IXs. Astoundingly, we find a simple inverse relationship between the IX PL energy and the transition temperature, which exhibits opposite power-dependent behaviors for near 0° and 60° samples. We conclude that this temperature dependence is a result of IX–IX exchange interactions, whose effect is suppressed by the moiré potential trapping IXs at low temperature.

The eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980 resulted in a cataclysmic restructuring of its surrounding landscapes. The Pumice Plain is one of these landscapes, where tree species such as Sitka willow (Salix sitchensis) and their dependent communities have been established along newly-formed streams. Thus, the study of these dependent communities provides a unique and rare opportunity to investigate factors influencing metacommunity assembly during true primary succession. We analyzed the influence of landscape connectivity on metacommunity assembly through a novel application of circuit theory, alongside the effects of other factors such as stream locations, willow leaf chemistry, and leaf area. We found that landscape connectivity structures community composition on willows across the Pumice Plain, where the least connected willows favored active flyers such as the western tent caterpillar (Malacosoma fragilis) or the Pacific willow leaf beetle (Pyrrhalta decora carbo). We also found that multiple levels of spatial habitat structure linked via landscape connectivity can predict the presence of organisms lacking high rates of dispersal, such as the invasive stem-boring poplar weevil (Cryptorhynchus lapathi). This is critical for management as we show that the maintenance of a heterogeneous mixture of landscape connectivity and resource locations can facilitate metacommunity dynamics to promote ecosystem function and mitigate the influences of invasive species.

When semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures are stacked, the twist angle and lattice mismatch lead to a periodic moiré potential. As the angle between the layers changes, so do the electronic properties. As the angle approaches 0° or 60°, interesting characteristics and properties, such as modulations in the band edges, flat bands, and confinement, are predicted to occur. Here, we report scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy measurements on the bandgaps and band modulations in MoSe2/WSe2 heterostructures with near 0° rotation (R-type) and near 60° rotation (H-type). We find a modulation of the bandgap for both stacking configurations with a larger modulation for R-type than for H-type as predicted by theory. Furthermore, local density of states images show that electrons are localized differently at the valence band and conduction band edges.

The viscoelastic property of pile-soil interactions is modeled by fractional derivative method and is used to characterize the structural dynamics of pile and rheological behavior of a thawing frozen soil. A study of the thawing frozen soil impacts on pile structure’s dynamic characteristic is carried out. The frequency spectrum analysis and empirical modal decomposition are used to identify the pile structure dynamic properties. The rocking mode vibration in which pile behaviors like rigid body supported by viscoelastic soil is extracted to capture the viscoelastic property of pile-soil interactions. The rocking mode exhibiting time-varying frequency features is modeled with fractional derivative model and the fractional derivative order is identified. This study proposes a quick and reliable method to identify the viscoelastic property of pile-soil interactions.

Plasmonic modulators have many possible applications in optical-frequency devices. Here the authors report a 2D semiconductor nonlinear plasmonic modulator enabled through strong interaction between the surface plasmon polaritons and excitons in a monolayer semiconductor integrated on top of a metallic waveguide.

Technology that measures bridge responses when a vehicle is crossing over it for structural health monitoring has been under development for approximately a decade. Most of the proposed methods are based on identification of the dynamic characteristics of a bridge such as the natural frequency, the mode shapes, and the damping. Specifically, many time–frequency domain approaches have been used to extract complex spectrum signatures from the complicated vibrations of a bridge due to the interactions of a vehicle with the bridge, which usually involves nonlinear, nonstationary, stochastic, and impact vibrations. In this paper, a method known as complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise is applied for the first time to analyze the acceleration response of a bridge to a moving vehicle, and the purpose is to extract the spectrum signature of the vehicle–bridge response for structural health monitoring. The time–frequency Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) spectrum of the decomposed mode from complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise is presented. The results are well-correlated with finite element analysis. The advantages of the complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise method are demonstrated in comparing the data from conventional methods, including power spectra, spectrograms, scalograms, and empirical mode decomposition.

Abstract A growing body of research shows that plant genetic factors can influence ecosystem processes and structure communities, but one aspect that has received little study is sex differentiation in dioecious plants. Since headwater streams are reliant on riparian leaf litterfall, plant sex differences in leaf traits may influence in‐stream processes. Sitka willow (Salix sitchensis) at Mount St. Helens is dioecious and heavily infested with the stem‐boring weevil (Cryptorhynchus lapathi), which causes branch dieback and summer litterfall. We found that female willow shrubs tend to grow closer to the stream bank, are more likely to be infected by the weevil, and have 42% higher litter C:N than male willows. These factors may lead to increased litter inputs and slower litter mass loss for female willows. The combination of colonization location, herbivore attack, altered litter quality, and slower mass loss results in female shrubs providing more sustained carbon and nutrient resources to microbes and invertebrates in the early successional streams at Mount St. Helens. In addition, since dioecy is a relatively common trait in riparian habitats, it is possible that plant sex plays a far more interesting role in structuring linked terrestrial–aquatic communities and ecosystem processes than previously understood.

In this paper, we investigate vehicle–bridge interactions and propose a new method for assessing bridge conditions based on nonlinear vibration analysis. A vehicle model is presented, and the dynamic load on the bridge is quantified based on bridge road roughness. The vibration of a river bridge under a moving vehicle is recorded and analyzed. The Fourier spectrum of the bridge response due to vehicle loading exhibits complicated cluster bands in addition to multiple peaks, some of which are correlated with the bridge natural modes characterized by finite element method analysis and free decay testing, and some of which are correlated with the vehicle dynamic load spectrum. To characterize the unidentified narrow band in the bridge response spectrum, the Lyapunov exponent of the response is estimated, which is found to be a positive value indicating the nonlinear properties of the bridge’s large response under vehicle loading. This finding correlates with the bridge inspection, which shows that some supporting roller bearings do not properly contact the superstructure of the bridge. To elaborate this phenomenon, a model of beam with nonideal supporting condition is analyzed, and a narrow band spectrum is characterized using He’s variational-iteration method. This research offers insight to using the vehicle–bridge interaction to monitor the health status of a bridge by using nonlinear properties, as well as linear properties.

Abstract The electronic band structure of twisted bilayer graphene develops van Hove singularities whose energy depends on the twist angle between the two layers. Using Raman spectroscopy, we monitor the evolution of the electronic band structure upon doping using the G peak area which is enhanced when the laser photon energy is resonant with the energy separation of the van Hove singularities. Upon charge doping, the Raman G peak area initially increases for twist angles larger than a critical angle and decreases for smaller angles. To explain this behavior with twist angle, the energy separation of the van Hove singularities must decrease with increasing charge density demonstrating the ability to modify the electronic and optical properties of twisted bilayer graphene with doping.

A novel technique to identify bridge damage using genetic algorithms and simulated annealing is proposed in this article. In the proposed method, the cross-sectional area of the damaged member is set as a variable that can be updated. An objective function was investigated to estimate the current condition of the damaged members. This function is the relationship between the measured strain and the analytical strain at the damage location. To obtain better agreement, the parameters were then identified using a genetic algorithm and simulated annealing to minimize the objective function. The proposed method was verified by a truss bridge and can directly estimate the damage based on strain measurements.

Van der Waals heterostructures enable fabrication of materials with engineered functionalities. Here, the authors demonstrate precise control over the interaction between layers by application of pressure with a scanning tunnelling microscopy tip.

Using scanning probe microscopy and spectroscopy, we explore the spatial symmetry of the electronic wave functions of twisted bilayer graphene at the “magic angle” of 1.1°. This small twist angle leads to a long wavelength moiré unit cell on the order of 13 nm and the appearance of two flat bands. As the twist angle is decreased, correlation effects increase until they are maximized at the magic angle. At this angle, the wave functions at the charge neutrality point show reduced symmetry due to the emergence of a charge ordered state. As the system is doped, the symmetry of the wave functions changes at each commensurate filling of the moiré unit cell pointing to the correlated nature of the spin and valley degeneracy broken states.

Genetic variation within a dominant riparian forest tree affects susceptibility to a leaf-galling aphid (Pemphigus betae), which induces phytochemical and structural changes in leaf tissue. Research Highlights: We show here that these changes to tree leaf tissue alter adjacent in-stream leaf litter decomposition rates and the aquatic macroinvertebrate community associated with litter in the stream for some Populus genotypes. Background and Objectives: Naturally occurring hybrid cottonwoods (Populus fremontii × Populus angustifolia) are differentially susceptible to aphid attack and vary in induced phytochemistry following attack. When leaves are galled by aphids, foliar tissue is altered structurally (through the formation of pea-sized gall structures) and phytochemically (through an increase in foliar condensed tannin concentrations). Materials and Methods: To examine the effect of aphid-galled leaves on forest stream processes, we collected both galled and un-galled leaves from five clones of three hybrid cottonwood genotypes in an experimental forest. We measured in-stream litter decomposition rates, aquatic fungal biomass and aquatic macroinvertebrate community composition. Results: Decomposition rates differed among genotypes and the galled litter treatments, with a 27% acceleration of decomposition rate for the galled litter of one genotype compared to its own un-galled litter and no differences between galled and un-galled litters for the other two genotypes. Genotype by foliar gall status interactions also occurred for measures of phytochemistry, indicating a prevalence of complex interactions. Similarly, we found variable responses in the macroinvertebrate community, where one genotype demonstrated community differences between galled and un-galled litter. Conclusions: These data suggest that plant genetics and terrestrial forest herbivory may be important in linking aquatic and terrestrial forest processes and suggest that examination of decomposition at finer scales (e.g., within species, hybrids and individuals) reveals important ecosystem patterns.
