From the 20th century, biological mechanisms of the brain behaviour have become more and more interesting for the research communities in information fields due to the computational power of the systems they inspire. In fact, despite the lack of consensus about the information processing actually involved in brain, biological processes have served as reference for recent computational models. The first Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) were developed as simplified versions of biological neural net- works in terms of structure and function. Today, the third generation of artificial network is that of the Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs), which reach a more realistic modelling by utilizing true biological features, like spikes, to transmit information between neurons. The proposal of this thesis is to embed the Izhikevich neuron model and a full custom "Spike timing dependent plasticity" (STDP) learning algorithm in an architecture called HEENS (Hardware Emulator of Evolved Neural System). HEENS is a multi-chip structure developed at the "Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya" (UPC) based on a ring link topology connecting several SIMD processors reproducing each one a group of neuron of a Spiking neural network. The Izhikevich neuron model is a worldwide adopted mathematical model for reproducing the neural membrane potential evolution, observed in some mammalian cortex, a long time and according to external stimuli. STDP is a biological learning algorithm which shapes the strength of a synaptic connection according to the timing with which that connection takes part to the overall spiking activity of the post or pre-synaptic neurons. This master thesis project, in particular, acts at algorithm level and at instruction level as well at architectural level. It takes place analysing the mathematical models for the right data parallelism, writing the assembly program describing the routine common to all the neurons of the implemented SNN, modifying the instruction set and the existing hardware of the HEENS architecture, in order to fullfil the biological model needs from a computational and performance point of view. HEENS architecture is described in VHDL code, its set-up operations (assembler for code translation, generation of memories, Network configuration) are performed by Python scripts, the comparison between the actual behaviour of HEENS to that of the mathematical models is instead performed via MatLAB scripts. The latter allow: to imitate the performances of a special purpose hardware; to generate source files in order to synchronize and align the model and the architecture even with the randomization of several neural parameters; to make some design choices; to verify and to show the results.

Real-time large-scale simulation of biological systems is a challenging task due to nonlinear functions describing biochemical reactions in the cells. Being fast, cost and power efficient alongside of capability to work in parallel have made hardware an attractive choice for simulation platform. This thesis proposes a neuromorphic platform for online Spike Timing Dependant Plasticity (STDP) learning, based on the COordinate Rotation DIgital Computer (CORDIC) algorithms. The implemented platform comprises two main components. First, the Izhikevich neuron model is modified for implementation using the CORDIC algorithm and simulated to ensure the model accuracy. Afterwards, the model was described as hardware and implemented on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). Second, the STDP learning algorithm is adapted and optimized using the CORDIC method, synthesized for hardware, and implemented to perform on-FPGA online learning on a network of CORDIC Izhikevich neurons to demonstrate competitive Hebbian learning. The implementation results are compared with the original model and state-of-the-art to verify accuracy, effectiveness, and higher speed of the system. These comparisons confirm that the proposed neuromorphic system offers better performance and higher accuracy while being straightforward to implement and suitable to scale. New findings show that astrocytes are important parts of the information processing in brain and believed to be responsible for some brain diseases such as Alzheimer and Epilepsy. Astrocytes generate Ca$^{2+}$ waves and release neuro-transmitters over a large area. To study astrcoytes, one need to simulate large number of biologically realistic models of these cells alongside neuron models. Software simulation is flexible but slow. This thesis proposes a high-speed and low-cost digital hardware to replicate biological-plausible astrocyte and glutamate release mechanism. The nonlinear terms of these models were calculated using high-precision and cost-efficient algorithms. Subsequently, the modified models were simulated to study and validate their functions. Several hardware were developed by setting different constraints to investigate trade-offs and achieve best possible design. As proof of concept, the design was implemented on a FPGA device. Hardware implementation results confirmed the ability of the design to replicate biological cells in detail with high accuracy. As for performance, the proposed design turned out to be far more faster and area efficient than previously published works that targeted digital hardware for biological-plausible astrocytes. Spiking neurons, the models that mimic the biological cells in the brain, are described using ordinary differential equations. A common method to numerically solve these equations is Euler's method. An important factor that has a significant impact on the performance and cost of the hardware implementation or software simulation of spiking neural networks and yet its importance has been neglected in the published literature, is the time step in Euler's method. In this thesis, first the Izhikevich neuron's accuracy as a function of the time step was measured. It was uncovered that the threshold time step that Izhikevich neuron becomes unstable is an exponential function of the input current. Software simulation performance, including total computational time and memory usage were compared for different time steps. Afterwards, the model was synthesized and implemented on the FPGA. Hardware performance metrics such as speed, area and power consumption were measured for each time step. Results indicated that time step has a negative linear effect on the performance. It was concluded that by determining maximum input current to the neuron, larger time steps comparable to those used in the previous works could be employed.

AIM: In this paper, using a mathematical model, we will show that for special exchanged photons, the Hamiltonian of a collection of neurons tends to a constant number and all activities is stopped. These photons could be called as the dead photons. To this aim, we use concepts of Bio-BIon in Izhikevich Neuron model. METHODS: In a neuron, there is a page of Dendrite, a page of axon's terminals and a tube of Schwann cells, axon and Myelin Sheath that connects them. These two pages and tube form a Bio-Bion. In a Bio-Bion, exchanging photons and some charged particles between terminals of dendrite and terminals of axon leads to the oscillation of neurons and transferring information. This Bion produces the Hamiltonian, wave equation and action potential of Izhikevich Neuron model. Also, this Bion determines the type of dependency of parameters of Izhikevich model on temperature and frequency and obtains the exact shape of membrane capacitance, resting membrane potential and instantaneous threshold potential. RESULTS: Under some conditions, waves of neurons in this BIon join to each other and potential shrinks to a delta function. Consequently, total Hamiltonian of the system tends to a constant number and system of neuron act like a dead system. Finally, this model indicates that all neurons have the ability to produce similar waves and signals like waves of the mind. CONCLUSION: Generalizing this to biology, we can claim that neurons out of the brain can produce signals of minding and imaging and thus mind isn’t confined to the brain.

Emulating the sense of touch is fundamental to endow robotic systems with perception abilities. This work presents an unprecedented mechanoreceptor-like neuromorphic tactile sensor implemented with fiber optic sensing technologies. A robotic gripper was sensorized using soft and flexible tactile sensors based on Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) transducers and a neuro-bio-inspired model to extract tactile features. The FBGs connected to the neuron model emulated biological mechanoreceptors in encoding tactile information by means of spikes. This conversion of inflowing tactile information into event-based spikes has an advantage of reduced bandwidth requirements to allow communication between sensing and computational subsystems of robots. The outputs of the sensor were converted into spiking on-off events by means of an architecture implemented in a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and applied to robotic manipulation tasks to evaluate the effectiveness of such information encoding strategy. Different tasks were performed with the objective to grant fine manipulation abilities using the features extracted from the grasped objects (i.e., size and hardness). This is envisioned to be a futuristic sensor technology combining two promising technologies: optical and neuromorphic sensing.

Tez (Yüksek Lisans) -- İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2014, Thesis (M.Sc.) -- İstanbul Technical University, Instıtute of Science and Technology, 2014, Elektroensefalografi (EEG), beyin dalgası aktivitelerin izlenmesini sağlayan elektriksel ölçme yöntemidir. EEG işaretlerinin ölçülmesi özellikle epilepsi hastalığında önemli olmakla beraber dikkat, hafıza, algı ve bilişsel süreçlerle ilgili diğer hastalıkların tespitinde de kullanılmaktadır. Son yıllarda Parkinson, Alzheimer gibi nörodejeneratif hastalıklar ve Tourette sendromu gibi işlev bozukluklarına bağlı değişimlerin gözlenmesinde kullanılan yaygın bir ölçüm yöntemidir. Bu ölçümler doğrultusunda elde edilen veriler belli frekanslardaki beyin dalgalarını belirlemekte, bunlar da uyku, dinlenme ya da yoğun bir zihin egzersizi gibi bir takım aktivitelere karşı düşmektedir. Dolayısıyla normal şekilde seyir etmeyen hastalık ve durumlar, frekans ya da senkronizasyon bozukluklarından yola çıkılarak tahmin edilmeye çalışılmaktadır. Ancak EEG sinyallerinin hücresel ve sinirsel ağlar seviyesinde karşılık geldiği fizyolojik olayların hala tam olarak bilinmiyor olması elde edilen verilerin yorumlanmasında ve hastalıkların altında yatan fizyopatolojik süreçlerin bu yöntem aracılığıyla araştırılmasında güçlük yaratmaktadır. Sinir sistemini inceleyen disiplinler arası bir bilim olan sinir bilimdeki gelişmeler ile, bir yandan çok boyutlu, çok kipli görüntüleme yöntemleriyle beynin işlevlerine ilişkin yüksek hacimli verilerin elde edilmesi, diğer yandan hesaplama kapasitesindeki artışla birlikte gerçekçi hesaplamalı modellerin geliştirilebilmesi mümkün olmuştur. Ancak hücre seviyesinde detaylı modellere sahip olunsa da bunların bilişsel rahatsızlık ya da nörolojik sendromlarla ilişkilendirilmesi tam olarak gerçekleştirilememiştir. Sinirsel rahatsızlıkların yol açtığı düzensiz veriler ya da hafıza ve algıyla ilişkili hücre davranışları EEG işaretleri sayesinde gözlemlenebilmiş, bu durum da ilgili çalışmaların korteks üzerinde yoğunlaşmasına neden olmuştur. Çünkü korteks, merkezi sinir sisteminin algı, hafıza ve bilişsel süreçlere ilişkin en önemli birimi olmasının yanı sıra sinir hücrelerinin en yoğun biçimde yer aldığı beyin alt kısmıdır. EEG işaretlerinin de korteks üzerinden ölçülüyor olması, çalışmaların korteks üzerine odaklanmasında haksız olunmadığını gösterir. Kortekse ilişkin çalışmalarda gelinen noktada birçok hesaplamalı model önerisi olmuştur. Bunlardan ilki üzerinde uzun zamandır çalışılan kütlesel sinir hücre modelidir (mass model). Tek tek sinir hücrelerinden yola çıkarak EEG' ye benzer sinyaller elde etmek için çok sayıda sinir hücresinin, model ve bağlantı parametrelerindeki değişimler altındaki davranışını gözlemlemek gerekir. Bunun getirdiği hesaplama yükünden kurtulmak ve daha az sayıda parametreyle modelin davranışını betimleyebilmek için kütlesel sinir hücre modelleri geliştirilmiştir. Bu modellerin çıkış noktası, ortalama alan kuramından yararlanarak, çok yüksek sayıdaki sinir hücresinden her birinin davranışını tek tek modellemek yerine bu hücrelerin birlikte davranışını bir olasılık dağılımı şeklinde ele almaktır. Sonrasında bu dağılım, tek bir ortalama vuru üretme oranına indirgenir. Böylece ortaya çok daha az parametreli bir model çıkmış olur. Farklı beyin bölgeleri tek bir sinir hücresi kütlesi ile temsil edilir ve bu beyin bölgeleri arasındaki ilişkiler de bu kütleler arasındaki ilişkilere indirgenmiş olur. Literatürde hem vuru üreten sinir hücrelerinden oluşmuş ağ yapılarıyla, hem de kütlesel modellerle EEG sinyalleri arasında bağ kurmaya çalışan çeşitli çalışmalar bulunmaktadır. Kütlesel modellerde genelde EEG zaman serileri ile modelin ürettiği işaret arasındaki ilişki frekans alanında kurulmaktadır. EEG'deki alfa, teta, gama gibi karakteristik salınımların model tarafından hangi şartlar altında üretildiği incelenmektedir. Kimi hastalıklarda EEG sinyalinde gözlenen değişimlerin altında yatan dinamiklerin ortaya çıkarılması için de bu tip bir modelleme yaklaşımı benimsenebilmektedir. Kütlesel modellerin avantajı daha az sayıda parametre içerdiği için gözlenen sinyallerle parametre değişimleri ve beyin fizyolojisi arasında bağlantı kurmanın daha kolay olmasıdır. Ayrıca hücresel ağlarla gözlenemeyen özellikle kaotik davranışların daha üst düzeyde bir modellemeyle gözlenebilir hale geldiği savlanmaktadır. Buna karşılık sinir hücrelerinden oluşan ağ modelleri kütlesel modellere göre daha ayrıntılı bir inceleme yapma olanağı sağlar. EEG sinyallerinin oluşumunda ayrıca rol oynadığı kabul edilen hücrelerin senkronizasyon özelliğinin incelenmesinde ve ağ yapısıyla gözlenen sinyal arasında bağ kurulmasında bu tip modeller daha detaylı bir yapı sunar. Bu modellerle bastırıcı ve uyarıcı hücre bağlantılarının EEG' deki farklı frekans bantları arasındaki bağlanımlara ve bu bağlanım üzerinden de işler bellek fonksiyonlarına etkisi veya sinaptik bağlantı kuvvetlerindeki değişimin bellekte tutma ve hatırlamayla ilişkisi incelenebilir. Kısa süreli bellekte hücre topluluklarının oluşturulmasında beta salınımlarının etkisi veya bellek oluşumunda hipokampüsteki salınımların kortekse etkileri yaklaşık 1000 sinir hücresinden oluşmuş bir model yardımıyla araştırılabilir. Beynin durağan durumu adı verilen ve son 10 yılın beyinle ilgili en popüler konularından biri olan beynin dışarıdan hiçbir uyaran almadığı durumda gözlenen etkinliğinin de vuru üreten sinir hücresi ağlarıyla incelenebileceği gösterilmiştir. Söz edilen bu birçok avantajdan dolayı bu çalışmada sinir hücresinden oluşan korteks ağ modeli kullanılmaktadır. Korteks modelinde yer alacak sinir hücresi modelleri de birden fazladır ve her biri farklı özelliklere sahiptir. Hodgkin-Huxley, AdEx, Izhikevich hücre modelleri bu anlamda değerlendirilip karşılaştırılan hücre modelleridir. Hodgkin-Huxley modeli korteksteki sinir hücrelerinin biyolojik ve fizyolojik özelliklerini, hücreler arası iyon kanallarını ve geçişlerini büyük ölçüde tanımlayan bir hücre modelidir. Bir sinir hücresi davranışının tüm detaylarını içermesine karşın sahip olduğu karmaşık ve yüksek mertebeden matematiksel ifadelerden dolayı analiz edilmeye pek uygun değildir. Özellikle oluşturulacak korteks modelinin, binlerce hücre ve bu hücrelerin birbirleri ile olan bağlantılarından oluşacağı düşünüldüğünde bu sinir hücresi modeli uygun değildir. Bu anlamda bakıldığında, AdEx ve Izhikevich hücre modelleri yine benzer şekilde tüm sinir hücresi davranışlarını sergileyebilecek ancak daha basit yapıdaki modellerdir. Hem korteks modellemesine daha uygun olmasından, hem de sonrasında geliştirilebilinen geniş ölçekteki beyin modellemelerinde yer almasından dolayı bu çalışma içerisinde Izhikevich sinir hücre modeli kullanılmıştır. Korteks modelleri MATLAB ve BRIAN olmak üzere iki farklı benzetim ortamında oluşturulmuştur. MATLAB içerisinde oluşturulan model, 800 adet uyaran ve 200 adet bastıran özellikteki sinir hücresinden oluşan iki ana gurup içermektedir. Sinir hücrelerinin hangi vuru türlerini üreteceği ise modeldeki parametrelerin değerleri ile belirlenmektedir. Sinir hücreleri arası bağlantı ağırlıkları, dışarıdan gelen uyarıcı akımlar ayrıca modelde yer almaktadır. Her bir sinir hücresi için bağlantı ağırlıkları uyaran hücreler için pozitif, bastıran hücreler için de negatif olacak şekilde belli aralıkta rastgele belirlenmektedir. MATLAB benzetim ortamında oluşturulan modelde; sinir hücresi bağlantıları, modeli oluşturan hücre sayısı ve benzetim süresi gibi değişkenlerin etkisi incelenmiştir. Izhikevich’ in önerdiği parametreler ile oluşturulan modelde yüksek olasılıkla alfa bandı salınımlarını görmek mümkündür. Sinir hücresi sayısının 1000 değil de daha düşük değerlerde alınması, ortalama vuru sayısını düşürmekte ve alfa salınımlarının yok olmasına neden olmaktadır. Benzetim süresinin uzatılması farklı frekanstaki salınımların oluşmasına neden olmaktadır. Önerilen benzetim süresi 1000ms olarak alındığında bu süre içerisinde beklenen frekansları görmek mümkün olmaktadır. Sinir hücreleri arasındaki bağlantı ağırlıkları, korteksin ortalama davranışı üzerinde oldukça etkilidir. Uyaran hücrelere ilişkin ağırlık değerinin arttırılması vuru sayısını arttırırken tam tersi değişiklik de vuru sayısını oldukça düşürmektedir. Ağırlıkların belli değerlere getirilmesi alfa bandı salınımları haricinde farklı frekansların da ortaya çıkmasını sağlamaktadır. Ağırlık değerlerini belli bir seviyenin altında indirmek ise vuruların büyük ölçüde azalmasına ve tüm frekans salınımlarının yok olmasına neden olmaktadır. BRIAN ortamında oluşturulan modelde ise sinir hücreleri uyaran ve bastıran tipte olmasının yanı sıra, ürettikleri vuru türlerine göre alt guruplara ayrılmıştır. Böylece uyaran tipteki sinir hücreleri; üç farklı vuru türüne karşılık gelen üç guruptan, bastıran tipteki hücreler ise; iki farklı davranış gösteren iki guruptan oluşmaktadır. Burada gerçekleştirilen benzetimlerde belli zamanlarda vuruların sıklaştığı belli zaman aralıklarında ise seyreldiği gözlemlenmiştir. Ancak bu modelde belli bir frekansta salınım elde edilememiştir. Bunun nedeni, benzetim ortamının hücrelerin spesifik guruplara ayrılmasını gerektirmesi, dolayısıyla da hücre çeşitliliğinin sağlanamıyor olmasıdır. Bu durum da, MATLAB tarafında elde edilen sonuçlarla karşılaştırma yapma olasılığını ortadan kaldırmaktadır. Detaylı bir şekilde analiz edilen Izhikevich korteks modeline daha sonra bir işler bellek ödevi (Working Memory Task) uygulanmıştır. Burada amaç, beyinde var olan farklı frekans bantlarındaki salınımların (alfa, teta, beta, gama) bellek üzerindeki etkilerini simule edebilmektir. Bu şekilde test edilmiş farklı modeller var olmasına karşın, bu tez çalışması ile birlikte ilk defa Izhikevich korteks modeliyle böyle bir ödev gerçekleştirilmiştir. Ödevde bir uyaran (stimuli) ve bir arka plan işareti (background activity) bulunmaktadır. Bunun neticesinde hücre aktivasyonlarından kaynaklanan bir geri dönüşüm davranışı (recurrent activity) oluşmaktadır. Uyaran, benzetimin başında belli bir zaman aralığında uygulanırken, arka plan işareti yarı periyottan sonra ya da sürekli olmak üzere iki farklı şekilde uygulanmaktadır. Arka plan işaretinin son yarı periyotta olduğu benzetimlerde Izhikevich modeli ile 45 Hz beta-gama bandının mevcut kalıcı durumu koruma, 6.5 Hz teta bandının ise yeni aktivasyonları bloklama özelliğini görmek mümkündür. 10 Hz alfa bandı salınımlarında ise hücre aktivasyonu yavaşlasa da tamamen yok olmamaktadır. Bunların bellek açısından karşılıkları da, alfa bandında belleğin yeni veri girişleri için içeriğindeki bilgiyi silmesi yani belleğin boşaltılması, teta bandında yeni gelen uyaranların bloklanarak mevcut verilerin korunması ve beta-gama bandında ise herhangi bir bloklama ya da silmenin yapılmaması durumudur., Electroencephalography (EEG) is an electrical measurement technique that provides tracking of brain wave activities. Measuring EEG signals provides an approach to determine diseases related to memory, perception and the other cognitive processes. Recently, it is also being used in tracing neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson and Alzheimers and neuropsychiatric disorders such as Tourette’s syndrome. The results of these data determine brain waves in specific frequencies, that are related to sleep, rest or one of the mental exercises with intensive activity. So, abnormal situations, behaviors or presence of some neurological diseases are hoped to be predicted considering disturbances in synchrony. However, it is not yet clearly known what the meaning of the EEG signals in terms of physiological processes considering the cellular and neuronal issues. So, interpretation of EEG data and determination of the psychopathological processes, that are underlying some neuronal diseases, are very difficult. Due to the improvements in neuroscience, which is an interdisciplinary area of science, more effort is given to understand the nervous system. Now, it becomes possible to obtain large-scale data related to brain functioning with high dimensional, multi-modal imaging techniques. On the other hand, it is also possible to develop biologically realistic computational models with the advent of rising capacity of computation. Although these developments supplied us with high amount of cognitive data and detailed models at neuronal level, we are still far from developing a satisfactory approach or theory explaining the formation of cognitive processes or the causes of some neurological syndromes and disorders. In recent years, to find a correlation between models related to brain dynamics and data obtained with effective methods and to collate the results obtained due to the dual improvements in neuroscience became a hot topic. The aim of this project is to make a contribution to the efforts of binding the computational models with experimental studies by devising a relation between the results obtained with spiking neuron models and EEG signals. The cortex is the most important structure of the brain, taking role in memory and cognitive processes. As the EEG signals measured are mostly related to cerebral cortex, the work dealing with cortex is reasonable as cortex is the site for these cognitive processes. There are many computational models of the cortex at different levels. The first and most popular one is the mass model which has been worked on for a long time. Obtaining signals from model, which is similar to EEG signals, when the model is based on individual neuron behavior needs the modification of many parameters. Mass model have been developed for discarding consisted computational challenge and it describes the behavior of the model with less parameters. The main point of these models is they describe the form of a probability distribution for behavior instead of considering the behavior of each neuron. These models do this by using the mean field theory. This distribution gives average ratio of the pulse generation and the model has less parameters. Different brain regions are represented by a single neuron mass and also relation between different brain regions are denoted by connection parameters in these mass models. In the literature, there are several studies trying to connect EEG signals with spiking neuron models and mass models. The mass models give the frequency generated by the field and they are related to EEG oscillations of alpha (8-12 Hz), theta (4-8 Hz) and gamma (30-70Hz). The characteristics of the model generating these frequencies are analyzed and the parameter values giving these frequencies are determined. The aim is to determine the relation between the values of parameters and the frequencies, which are the hallmark of neurological diseases. The advantage of mass models is that it is easier to determine the connection between parameter values and brain physiology as lesser number of parameters are included in the model. In addition, high-level modeling assures the observation of phenomena that cannot be observed in cellular networks, such as chaotic behavior. In contrast, spiking neural network models provide more detailed investigation than mass models. With this type of models more detailed investigation of the formation of EEG signals is possible. Also, synchronization of the spikes can be obtained and correlated to network topology. These models can be used in investigating the relation between different frequency bands of EEG data corresponding to cognitive processes like attention, memory consolation and the relation between inhibitory and excitatory cells composing the model. The situation that is named brain default mode activity, where brain activity without any external excitatory stimuli can be investigated using spiking neural networks. Due to these advantages of spiking neural networks, in this thesis a model of cortex using Izhikevich neurons will be proposed and the cognitive phases composing working memory tasks will be obtained with the proposed model. While forming cortex models composed of neurons, different neuron models each having different features are considered. To name some neuron models, Hogkin-Huxley, AdEx, Izhikevich are the mostly used ones. Hodgkin-Huxley model defines biological and physiological characteristics of neurons and the transition of ions through channels due to neuronal activity can be modeled with this neuron model. While Hodgkin-Huxley model gives a detailed model of a single neuron, it is computationally complex and requires solution of high-order, non-linear differential equations. As the cortex model, even a simplest one, can be created using thousands of cells and their interconnection with each other, such a neuron model is not suitable in forming a model of cortex to investigate cognitive processes. In this regard the AdEx and Izhikevich cell models are more suitable as they have simpler mathematical formation, while capable of producing the different neuronal activities. In this study Izhikevich neuron model is used due to above mentioned reasons. Cortex models are created using two different simulation programs: MATLAB and BRIAN. In MATLAB, the neuron models considered in forming cortex are categorized in two groups, namely, excitatory and inhibitory. Different neuronal behaviors observed in these two groups are obtained, with different parameter values of Izhikevich model. The model has 800 excitatory and 200 inhibitory neurons and all neurons are connected to each other, so the network is all-to-all connected network. The model also connection weights between neurons and external exciting current. The weights are defined randomly for both excitatory and inhibitory neurons. In MATLAB the proposed model is analyzed by modifying the variables as neuron connections, neuron numbers and simulation time. The proposed model has high probability of exhibiting the oscillations of different frequencies. When the number of neuron is lower than 1000, the average of spikes formed reduces and alpha oscillations disappear. Longer simulation times exhibit oscillations with different frequencies. When the simulation time is fixed to the recommended simulation time which is 1000 ms, it is possible to reach the expected frequency. The weights between neurons are highly effective on the average behavior. Increasing weight of the excitatory neurons enhances signals however opposite change reduces. Alpha band oscillations appeared as well as different frequency bands for different weights values. Significantly reducing the weights, causes decrease in spiking neurons and all frequencies disappear. The BRIAN model has excitatory and inhibitory neurons and subgroups are formed to obtain different neuronal behavior. Thus, two different neuron behaviors are created for inhibitory neurons and three different neuronal behaviors are formed for excitatory neurons. Total neuron number is 1000 like the MATLAB model and all of the neurons are connected each other. So, the sparseness is equal to 1. Other parameters and connections are created by the same way. However, the model formed using BRIAN environment was not able to create oscillation in certain frequencies because creating different neuronal activity by subgroups did not give rise to richness of neuronal activity. The proposed cortex model is further used to show the different phases of neuronal activity during working memory tasks. The aim of the research is to provide a computationally efficient neural network model for the study of deep brain stimulation efficacy in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. An Izhikevich neuron model was used to accomplish this task and four classes of neurons were modeled. The parameters of each class were estimated using a genetic algorithm with a fitness function based on spike frequency as a function of input current. After computing the optimal parameters the neurons were interconnected to form the network model. The estimated parameters were capable of replicating the normal firing characteristics for each type of neuron, but failed to replicate richer spiking characteristics such as post-inhibitory bursting and tonic firing. Without these characteristics, the network was unable to produce biologically feasible results. Findings indicate the Izhikevich model relies heavily on manual tuning and must be trained under an extensive set of conditions to allow for the majority of spiking characteristics to be learned. The use of the Izhikevich model in a network simulation will always be limited to the characteristics trained on a single neuron. When connected to the network the neuron may be exposed to a variety of unlearned conditions and therefore may not be capable of replicating biologically realistic behavior.
