Cancer cells rely on mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and the noncanonical tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. In this paper, we shed light on the vital role played by the noncanonical TCA cycle in a host-side concession to mitochondria, especially in highly energy-demanding malignant tumor cells. Inhibition of ATP-citrate lyase (ACLY), a key enzyme in the noncanonical TCA cycle, induced apoptosis by increasing reactive oxygen species levels and DNA damage while reducing mitochondrial membrane potential. The mitochondrial membrane citrate transporter inhibitor, CTPI2, synergistically enhanced these effects. ACLY inhibition reduced cytosolic citrate levels and CTPI2 lowered ACLY activity, suggesting that the noncanonical TCA cycle is sustained by a positive feedback mechanism. These inhibitions impaired ATP production, particularly through OXPHOS. Metabolomic analysis of mitochondrial and cytosolic fractions revealed reduced levels of glutathione pathway-related and TCA cycle-related metabolite, except fumarate, in mitochondria following noncanonical TCA cycle inhibition. Despite the efficient energy supply to the cell by mitochondria, this symbiosis poses challenges related to reactive oxygen species and mitochondrial maintenance. Polyoxometalates (POMs) are robust, discrete, and structurally well-defined metal-oxide cluster anions that have stimulated research in broad fields of science. Keplerates, as porous giant POMs, serve as a multifunctional nano-platform exhibiting fascinating chemical properties stemming from the porous molecular structure, substantial interior space, delocalization of d-electrons over the large molecular surface, etc . Consequently, Keplerates have attracted significant attention from scientists in the fields of chemistry, physics, biology, and materials sciences. This work reviews recent research progress on Keplerates as nanocontainers, catalysts, and battery materials. Furthermore, current challenges and potential future research directions are discussed, providing a reference for the development and effective application of Keplerates and Keplerate-based materials.

Objective Patients undergoing maintenance dialysis are at a higher risk of morbidity and mortality due to severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) than the general population. However, longitudinal data regarding this subpopulation of patients are lacking. We therefore examined the prognosis of patients with COVID-19 undergoing maintenance dialysis between 2020 and 2023. In addition, we explored the factors correlated with COVID-19 severity, focusing on the transition thereof throughout the observational period. Methods The primary outcome was the progression to severe or fatal COVID-19. We evaluated the correlation between the primary outcome and baseline demographic and clinical characteristics of patients. Patients undergoing maintenance dialysis who were hospitalized for mild-to-moderate COVID-19 between February 2020 and April 2023 were enrolled at four institutions in Kanagawa, Japan. Results Of the 173 patients, 7 (4.0%) developed severe COVID-19, and 12 (6.9%) died. The severe/death cohort was significantly older, with a higher percentage of unvaccinated patients than the non-severe cohort (58.2% and 25.0%, respectively; p=0.016). Thymus and activation-regulated chemokine levels on admission were lower in the severe/death cohort than in the non-severe cohort, albeit not to a statistically significant degree (148±84 mg/dL and 342±657 pg/mL, respectively; p=0.082). A multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the odds ratio for severe morbidity or death was 0.23 (95% confidence interval: 0.07-0.75) for vaccinated patients. Conclusion In patients undergoing maintenance dialysis, the severity rate of COVID-19 is approximately 10%. Vaccination was correlated with a reduced risk of severe COVID-19.

Polyoxometalates (POMs), anionic nanosized oxoclusters that can be considered as fragments of metal oxides, have been extensively studied for their diverse composition and structure, showing promise in various fields such as catalysis and electronics. Proton conduction, relevant to catalysis and electronics, has attracted interest in materials chemistry, and POM anions are advantageous in terms of their proton carrier density and mobility. Recently, polar POMs have attracted attention for their unique ferroelectric behaviors, yet they have been little studied with regard to proton conduction, as their polarity has generally been believed to have a negative impact. Here, we propose that polar POMs can be used to align polar proton carriers, such as H 2 O and polymers, to construct efficient proton-conducting pathways. In this study, we present ionic crystals composed of polar Preyssler-type POMs ([X n + (H 2 O)P 5 W 30 O 110 ] (15- n )- , X n + = Ca 2+ , Eu 3+ ) and K + exhibiting ultrahigh proton conductivity surpassing 10 -2 S cm -1 , which is required for practical applications. In contrast, ionic crystals with nonpolar Preyssler-type POMs show an order of magnitude lower proton conductivity. Structural and spectroscopic studies combined with theoretical calculations reveal that proton carriers align with the aid of staggered arrays of polar POMs, forming a hydrogen-bonding network favorable for proton conduction. This study integrates molecular chemistry by the design of POMs and solid-state chemistry by exploring long-range proton conduction mechanisms, offering novel insights for future materials design.

Introduction: In recent years, the frequency of idiopathic peptic ulcers (IPUs) has increased. However, the clinicopathological characteristics of IPU have not been fully elucidated and treatment methods for recurrent and refractory cases have not yet been established., Case Presentation: A man in his forties complained of epigastric discomfort. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed a gastric ulcer in the lesser curvature of the gastric angle. After Helicobacter pylori was eradicated, the gastric ulcer recurred despite the administration of a potassium competitive acid blocker (PCAB), and a diagnosis of IPU was made. Twenty-four-hour intragastric pH monitoring revealed insufficient gastric acid suppression. Misoprostol was added to the patient's treatment. Subsequently, the ulcer healed and recurrence was not observed., Conclusion: For refractory IPU, the evaluation of pathophysiological function through 24-h gastric pH monitoring may lead to the selection of an appropriate treatment. Excellent strength-ductility balance in metastable Fe-Cr-Ni austenitic alloys stems from phase transformation from austenite (fcc structure) to α' martensite (bcc structure) during deformation, namely deformation-induced α' martensitic transformation (DIMT). Here, DIMT in a metastable Fe-17Cr-7Ni austenitic alloy was detected in situ and characterized in three dimensions (3D) by employing synchrotron radiation X-ray microtomography. This technique utilizes refraction contrast, which is attributable to the presence of phase boundaries between the parent austenite and the newly formed α' martensite phase. By combining microtomography and position-sensitive X-ray diffraction, we succeeded in crystallographically identifying multiple α' martensite phases continuously transformed in four groups from a single parent austenitic phase., (© 2024. We report a centrifugal microfluidic device that automatically performs sample preparation under steady-state rotation for clinical applications using mass spectrometry. The autonomous microfluidic device was designed for the control of liquid operation on centrifugal hydrokinetics (CLOCK) paradigm. The reported device was highly stable, with less than 7% variation with respect to the time of each unit operation (sample extraction, mixing, and supernatant extraction) in the preparation process. An agitation mechanism with bubbling was used to mix the sample and organic solvent in this device. We confirmed that the device effectively removed the protein aggregates from the sample, and the performance was comparable to those of conventional manual sample preparation procedures that use high-speed centrifugation. In addition, probe electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (PESI-MS) was performed to compare the device-treated and manually treated samples. The obtained PESI-MS spectra were analyzed by partial least squares discriminant analysis, and the preparation capability of the device was found to be equivalent to that of the conventional method., (© 2024. Background: Barrett's esophagus and esophageal adenocarcinoma cases are increasing as gastroesophageal reflux disease increases. Using artificial intelligence (AI) and linked color imaging (LCI), our aim was to establish a method of diagnosis for short-segment Barrett's esophagus (SSBE). Methods: We retrospectively selected 624 consecutive patients in total at our hospital, treated between May 2017 and March 2020, who experienced an esophagogastroduodenoscopy with white light imaging (WLI) and LCI. Images were randomly chosen as data for learning from WLI: 542 (SSBE+/- 348/194) of 696 (SSBE+/- 444/252); and LCI: 643 (SSBE+/- 446/197) of 805 (SSBE+/- 543/262). Using a Vision Transformer (Vit-B/16-384) to diagnose SSBE, we established two AI systems for WLI and LCI. Finally, 126 WLI (SSBE+/- 77/49) and 137 LCI (SSBE+/- 81/56) images were used for verification purposes. The accuracy of six endoscopists in making diagnoses was compared to that of AI. Results: Study participants were 68.2 ± 12.3 years, M/F 330/294, SSBE+/- 409/215. The accuracy/sensitivity/specificity (%) of AI were 84.1/89.6/75.5 for WLI and 90.5/90.1/91.1/for LCI, and those of experts and trainees were 88.6/88.7/88.4, 85.7/87.0/83.7 for WLI and 93.4/92.6/94.6, 84.7/88.1/79.8 for LCI, respectively. Conclusions: Using AI to diagnose SSBE was similar in accuracy to using a specialist. Our finding may aid the diagnosis of SSBE in the clinic.

Linked color imaging (LCI) for image-enhanced endoscopy (IEE) highlights mucosal color differences. We investigated risk factors associated with mucosal redness of the duodenal bulb using LCI. Consecutive patients were retrospectively selected after their duodenal bulbs were observed via LCI. A symptom questionnaire (Izumo scale) was completed. The LCI of the duodenal bulb was subjectively evaluated on whether redness was present and objectively evaluated based on L* a* b* color values. The clinical characteristics of the 302 study participants were: male/female, 120/182; mean age, 70.9 years. Twenty-one cases (7.0%) were in the redness (+) group. After multiple regression analysis, independent predictors for the red component ( a* ) of the duodenal bulb using LCI were: age (β = -0.154, p < 0.01), female (β = -0.129, p < 0.05), body mass index (BMI; β = -0.136, p < 0.05), Helicobacter pylori eradication (β = 0.137, p < 0.05), endoscopic gastric mucosal atrophy score (EGAS; β = -0.149, p < 0.05), and constipation-related quality of life (QOL) (β = -0.122, p < 0.05) scores. Lower age, lower BMI, lower EGAS, a constipation-related QOL score, post- H. pylori eradication, and being male were associated with mucosal redness in the duodenal bulb with IEE using LCI.

Aims: The purpose of this study is to establish a novel diagnosis system in early acute coronary syndrome (ACS) using probe electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (PESI-MS) and machine learning (ML) and to validate the diagnostic accuracy. Methods: A total of 32 serum samples derived from 16 ACS patients and 16 control patients were analyzed by PESI-MS. The acquired mass spectrum dataset was subsequently analyzed by partial least squares (PLS) regression to find the relationship between the two groups. A support vector machine, an ML method, was applied to the dataset to construct the diagnostic algorithm. Results: Control and ACS groups were separated into the two clusters in the PLS plot, indicating ACS patients differed from the control in the profile of serum composition obtained by PESI-MS. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of our diagnostic system were all 93.8%, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve showed 0.965 (95% CI: 0.84-1). Although gastric juvenile polyposis (GJP) often coexists with gastric cancer, a preoperative accurate diagnosis is still difficult to obtain. A 70-year-old woman was referred for epigastralgia and anemia. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy with a conventional endoscope showed numerous gastric polyps with no cancerous findings. Magnifying endoscopy with narrow-band imaging (M-NBI) showed cancerous findings, and a target biopsy revealed adenocarcinoma. Histopathological findings after endoscopic resection confirmed a diagnosis of juvenile polyposis with intramucosal adenocarcinoma. Genetic analyses revealed a germline pathogenic variant of SMAD4. A target biopsy using M-NBI and endoscopic resection proved useful for confirming the preoperative diagnosis of coexisting cancerous lesions in GJP.

Objectives: We aimed to clarify the endoscopic and clinicopathological features of raspberry-shaped gastric lesions (RSGLs) and to establish an endoscopic diagnostic algorithm for RSGLs., Methods: We collected RSGLs from an endoscopic database at our hospital between May 2009 and August 2021. All RSGLs were histopathologically classified and compared based on their endoscopic and clinicopathological characteristics., Results: Sixty-five RSGLs in 54 patients were classified into five histopathological types: gastric adenocarcinoma of foveolar type (GA-FV, n = 43), gastric adenocarcinoma of fundic-gland type (GA-FG, n = 2), gastric adenocarcinoma of fundic-gland mucosa type (GA-FGM, n = 4), hyperplastic polyp (HP, n = 12), and proton pump inhibitor-related lesion (PPI-L, n = 4). All RSGLs exhibited polygonal or curved marginal crypt epithelium (MCE). GA-FV lesions had homogenously reddish (95%) and an irregular microvascular (MV) pattern (91%). GA-FG lesions were heterogeneously reddish with a submucosal tumor shape (100%) and had a regular MV pattern (50%). GA-FGM lesions were homogen+ously reddish (75%) and occasionally had a submucosal tumor shape (50%) with an irregular MV pattern (75%). HPs and PPI-Ls were homogeneously reddish (93%), with linear or dotted MCE (81%) and a regular MV pattern (100%)., Conclusion: Our diagnostic algorithm for RSGLs constructed using endoscopic features might be useful for the endoscopic differential diagnosis of RSGLs.

A mediastinal thoracic duct cyst that originates from the thoracic duct is a very rare disease in the mediastinum. There have been no reports of mediastinal thoracic duct cyst infection caused by endoscopic treatment. This is the first case of mediastinal thoracic duct cyst infection after endoscopic submucosal dissection for early esophageal cancer. We herein report a 75-year-old man with mediastinal thoracic duct cyst infection caused by esophageal endoscopic submucosal dissection. In cases where a mediastinal thoracic duct cyst is found before performing endoscopic esophageal treatment, we should carefully consider the potential risk of post-treatment cyst infection.

BACKGROUND Texture and color enhancement imaging (TXI), a new type of image-enhanced endoscopy, may improve the detection of gastrointestinal lesions. Barrett's esophagus (BE) requires an accurate diagnosis since it may undergo neoplastic transformation. We aimed to evaluate the usefulness of TXI compared with white light imaging (WLI) in BE. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this prospective study at a single hospital from February 2021 to February 2022, we enrolled 52 consecutive patients with BE. Endoscopic images of BE using WLI, TXI mode 1 (TXI-1), TXI mode 2 (TXI-2), and narrow-band imaging (NBI) were compared by 10 endoscopists (5 experts and 5 trainees). Endoscopists scored visibility for the images as follows: 5 (improved), 4 (somewhat improved), 3 (equivalent), 2 (somewhat decreased), and 1 (decreased). Total visibility scores for all 10 endoscopists, and subgroups composed of the 5 expert endoscopists and the 5 trainee endoscopists, were evaluated. Main-group (10 endoscopists) scores of ≥40, 21-39, and ≤20, and subgroup (5 endoscopists) scores of ≥20, 11-19, and ≤10, were considered "improved", "equivalent", and "decreased", respectively. Inter-rater reliability (intra-class correlation coefficient [ICC]) was calculated and images were objectively assessed based on L*a*b* color values and color differences (ΔE*). RESULTS All 52 cases were diagnosed as short-segment BE (SSBE). TXI-1/TXI-2 improved visibility compared with WLI was: 78.8%/32.7% for all endoscopists; 82.7%/40.4% for trainees; and 76.9%/34.6% for experts. NBI did not improve visibility. The ICC for TXI-1 and TXI-2 compared with WLI was "excellent" for all endoscopists. The ΔE* between esophageal and Barrett's mucosae, and between Barrett's and gastric mucosae, was higher for TXI-1 than for WLI (P<0.01, P<0.05, respectively). CONCLUSIONS TXI, especially TXI-1, improves the endoscopic diagnosis of SSBE compared with WLI, regardless of the endoscopist's skill.

Background: An intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) is a pancreatic tumor with malignant potential. Although we anticipate a sensitive method to diagnose the malignant conversion of IPMN, an effective strategy has not yet been established. The combination of probe electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (PESI-MS) and machine learning provides a promising solution for this purpose., Methods: We prospectively analyzed 42 serum samples obtained from IPMN patients who underwent pancreatic resection between 2020 and 2021. Based on the postoperative pathological diagnosis, patients were classified into two groups: IPMN-low grade dysplasia (n = 17) and advanced-IPMN (n = 25). Serum samples were analyzed by PESI-MS, and the obtained mass spectral data were converted into continuous variables. These variables were used to discriminate advanced-IPMN from IPMN-low grade dysplasia by partial least square regression or support vector machine analysis. The areas under receiver operating characteristics curves were obtained to visualize the difference between the two groups., Results: Partial least square regression successfully discriminated the two disease classes. From another standpoint, we selected 130 parameters from the entire dataset by PESI-MS, which were fed into the support vector machine. The diagnostic accuracy was 88.1%, and the area under the receiver operating characteristics curve was 0.924 by this method. Approximately 10 min were required to perform each method., Conclusion: PESI-MS combined with machine learning is an easy-to-use tool with the advantage of rapid on-site analysis. Background: Oxaliplatin is an anticancer therapy for pancreatic, gastric, and colorectal cancers. It is also used in patients with carcinomas of unknown primary sites. Oxaliplatin is associated with less frequent renal dysfunction than other conventional platinum-based drugs such as cisplatin. Albeit, there have been several reports of acute kidney injury with frequent use. In all cases, renal dysfunction was temporary and did not require maintenance dialysis. There have been no previous reports of irreversible renal dysfunction after a single dose of oxaliplatin., Case Presentation: Previous reports of oxaliplatin-induced renal injury occurred after patients received multiples doses. In this study, a 75-year-old male with unknown primary cancer and underlying chronic kidney disease developed acute renal failure after receiving the first dose of oxaliplatin. Suspected of having drug-induced renal failure through an immunological mechanism, the patient was treated with steroids; however, treatment was ineffective. Renal biopsy ruled out interstitial nephritis and revealed acute tubular necrosis. Renal failure was irreversible, and the patient subsequently required maintenance hemodialysis., Conclusions: We provide the first report of pathology-confirmed acute tubular necrosis after the first dose of oxaliplatin which led to irreversible renal dysfunction and maintenance dialysis., (© 2023. Primary cilia are organelles consisting of axonemal microtubules and plasma membranes, and they protrude from the cell surface to the extracellular region and function in signal sensing and transduction. The integrity of cilia, including the length and structure, is associated with signaling functions; however, factors involved in regulating the integrity of cilia have not been fully elucidated. Here, we showed that the Rab GTPase-binding protein EHBP1L1 and its newly identified interactors CD2AP and CIN85, known as adaptor proteins of actin regulators, are involved in ciliary length control. Immunofluorescence microscopy showed that EHBP1L1 and CD2AP/CIN85 are localized to the ciliary sheath. EHBP1L1 depletion caused mislocalization of CD2AP/CIN85, suggesting that CD2AP/CIN85 localization to the ciliary sheath is dependent on EHBP1L1. Additionally, we determined that EHBP1L1- and CD2AP/CIN85-depleted cells had elongated cilia. The aberrantly elongated cilia phenotype and the ciliary localization defect of CD2AP/CIN85 in EHBP1L1-depleted cells were rescued by the expression of WT EHBP1L1, although this was not observed in the CD2AP/CIN85-binding-deficient mutant, indicating that the EHBP1L1-CD2AP/CIN85 interaction is crucial for controlling ciliary length. Furthermore, EHBP1L1- and CD2AP/CIN85-depleted cells exhibited actin nucleation and branching defects around the ciliary base. Evaluation of chronic constipation is important, although it is often difficult to satisfactorily treat due to the complex interplay of factors. This study aimed to determine whether the volume of intraluminal contents and lateral diameter of the colon measured from computed tomography (CT) images were correlated with the symptoms of chronic constipation and stool consistency. Consecutive patients who underwent the Constipation Scoring System (CSS), Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) questionnaires and simple abdominal CT were selected retrospectively. The intestinal tract diameter at each site was measured, and the amounts of stool and gas in the intestinal tract were evaluated at five levels. Of the 149 study participants, 54 were males and 95 were females and their mean age was 72.1 years. In the right hemi-colon, CSS5 (Time) correlated significantly with gas volume (p < 0.01). In the left hemi-colon, stool volume correlated significantly with CSS2 (Difficulty), CSS3 (Completeness), CSS5 (Time) and CSS total (p < 0.05). The BSFS negatively correlated with gas volume and diameter in the right hemi-colon and with gas volume in the rectum (p < 0.05). CT findings including stool volume, gas volume and diameter correlated with some constipation symptoms and stool consistency. These findings may be useful in evaluating and treating constipation.

The endoscopic features of gastric epithelial neoplasms of fundic gland mucosa lineage (GEN-FGML) have not been well investigated. We aimed to clarify the endoscopic features of GEN-FGML and differences between gastric adenocarcinoma of the fundic gland type (GA-FG) and fundic gland mucosa type (GA-FGM). A total of 62 GEN-FGML lesions, including 52 GA-FG and 10 GA-FGM, were retrospectively analyzed using endoscopic and clinicopathological findings to provide information of diagnostic value using white light imaging (WLI) and magnifying endoscopy with narrow-band imaging (M-NBI). GA-FG frequently presented with a whitish, submucosal tumor (SMT) shape with dilated vessels with branching architecture and background mucosa without atrophic change in WLI, an indistinct demarcation line (DL), dilatation of the crypt opening and intervening part (IP), and microvessels without distinct irregularity in M-NBI. GA-FGM frequently presented as a reddish, elevated lesion in WLI, with a distinct DL, dilatation of the IP, and an irregular microvascular pattern in M-NBI. As for an M-NBI diagnosis, five GA-FGM lesions met the diagnostic criteria for cancer, whereas none of the GA-FG lesions met the same criteria. We highlight the endoscopic features of GEN-FGML, and the differentiation between GA-FG and GA-FGM might be possible by combination of lesion color and morphology in WLI and M-NBI diagnoses.

Background and Aim: Prompt differential diagnosis of liver tumors is clinically important and sometimes difficult. A new diagnostic device that combines probe electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (PESI-MS) and machine learning may help provide the differential diagnosis of liver tumors., Methods: We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of this new PESI-MS device using tissues obtained and stored from previous surgically resected specimens. The following cancer tissues (with collection dates): hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC, 2016-2019), intrahepatic cholangiocellular carcinoma (ICC, 2014-2019), and colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM, 2014-2019) from patients who underwent hepatic resection were considered for use in this study. Non-cancerous liver tissues (NL) taken from CRLM cases were also incorporated into the analysis. Each mass spectrum provided by PESI-MS was tested using support vector machine, a type of machine learning, to evaluate the discriminatory ability of the device., Results: In this study, we used samples from 91 of 139 patients with HCC, all 24 ICC samples, and 103 of 202 CRLM samples; 80 NL from CRLM cases were also used. Each mass spectrum was obtained by PESI-MS in a few minutes and was evaluated by machine learning. The sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy of the PESI-MS device for discriminating HCC, ICC, and CRLM from among a mix of all three tumors and from NL were 98.9%, 98.1%, and 98.3%; 87.5%, 93.1%, and 92.6%; and 99.0%, 97.9%, and 98.3%, respectively., Conclusion: This study demonstrated that PESI-MS and machine learning could discriminate liver tumors accurately and rapidly., (© 2022 Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Foundation and John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd.)

Bile acids are strongly associated with the pathogenesis of functional gastrointestinal diseases. In recent years, blue laser imaging (BLI) endoscopy has emerged as a novel image-enhanced endoscopic method, which illustrates bile as a reddish hue. The present study investigated the factors that affect the area of bile in duodenal bulbs using BLI. For this purpose, patients (356 cases) who underwent upper endoscopy with BLI between April, 2017 and December, 2019, and completed patient background and symptom questionnaires [Constipation Scoring System (CSS), Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) and Frequency Scale for Symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (FSSG)], were retrospectively investigated. Each BLI bile score was calculated as a percentage of bile area in a field of view in the duodenal bulb using a KS400 image analysis system, and the association with abdominal symptoms was examined using multiple regression analysis. The patient characteristics included the following: Age (in years), 69.9±11.3; male/female ratio, 146/210; body mass index, 23.0±3.8; reflux esophagitis (M/A/B/C), 143/19/3/3; atrophic gastritis (C-0/C1-3/O1-3), 132/100/124; proton pump inhibitor potassium competitive acid blocker/aspirin/ursodeoxycholic acid/gall bladder stones/cholecystectomy, 105/27/18/43/18; BLI bile score, 7.10 (±14.34); CSS score, 3.55 (±3.80); BSFS score, 3.91 (±1.02); and FSSG score, 4.80 (±5.76). Correlation coefficients (P<0.05) for the BLI bile score were found for cholecystectomy (Rho=0.137) and aspirin use (Rho=0.118). In multiple regression analysis, independent predictors of the BLI bile score were cholecystectomy [standardized partial regression coefficient (β)=0.169, P=0.001] and the BSFS score (β=0.107, P=0.042). The rational development of an anion templation strategy for the construction of macrocycles has been historically limited to small anions, but large polyoxoanions can offer unmatched structural diversity and ample binding sites. Here we report the formation of a {Mo 22 Fe 8 } macrocycle by using the Preyssler anion, [NaP 5 W 30 O 110 ] 14- ({P 5 W 30 }), as a supramolecular template. The {Mo 22 Fe 8 } macrocycle displays selective anion binding behavior in solution. In the solid state, the 1 : 2 host-guest complex, {P 5 W 30 } 2 ⊂{Mo 22 Fe 8 }, transports protons more effectively, through an extended hydrogen-bonding network, than a related 1 : 1 complex where the guest is completely encapsulated.
