1. Student Perceptions of Interprofessional Education: Associations with the Major Subject, Previous Education and Work Experience

Abstract

Based on previous studies, it was hypothesized that the personal background of students, including previous qualifications and work experience, may be one factor affecting their perceptions of interprofessional education. In a cross-sectional study, the associations between students' (N = 149) gender, major subject, previous degrees, and interprofessional work experience, perceptions of interprofessional education, and appraisal of members of their own profession in interprofessional cooperation were examined. According to the most noteworthy results, having more interprofessional work experience and a previous degree from a university of applied sciences was associated with perceiving interprofessional studies to be more useful. Moreover, having less interprofessional work experience was associated with perceiving members of one's own profession more positively regarding interprofessional cooperation. It is suggested that also these background variables are considered when designing and implementing interprofessional education.

Abstract

Purpose: This study is an in-depth exploration of the unfolding experiences of five persons who developed dementia while still in paid work/employment, and of their significant others. Namely, we explore how they experienced the actions and decisions taken with respect to work, and what the consequences meant to them. Methods: A qualitative longitudinal case study design with multiple cases was used, including five participants with dementia and significant others of their choice. Interviews were undertaken longitudinally and analysed with the Formal Data-Structure Analysis approach. Results: The joint analysis resulted in two intertwined themes: 1) The significance and consequences of a dementia diagnosis: a double-edged trigger, and 2) Sensemaking and agency. The prevalent images of what dementia is, who can/cannot get it and what it will bring, were revealed as the critical aspects. Having the opportunity to make sense of what has happened and participate in decision-making, contributed decisively to the participants' experiences. Conclusions: Findings illustrate how a dementia diagnosis is alien in work-life, but once diagnosed, it may trigger self-fulfiling expectations based upon stereotypical understanding of dementia. A shift is needed from a deficit-focused perspective, to viewing people with dementia as citizens capable of agency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Having opportunities to make decisions and choices regarding one's life is crucial when living with dementia. This inter-disciplinary study draws on the concept of relational autonomy to explore how working-age people living dementia seek to influence their lives, and what makes it easier or more difficult for them in their everyday life. The data consist of three focus group discussions conducted with 12 retired adults who developed dementia while still employed. The results illuminate various resources that enable a person to (a) handle their difficulties at work and related consequences with dignity, (b) manage everyday tasks and live a fulfilling life, and (c) fight the stigma associated with (working-age) dementia. Challenges related to these aspects reported by the participants reveal gaps and obstacles that impede the full realisation of the rights of people living with early onset dementia. Abstract

Background Striving to cope with day-to-day challenges is a basic human behaviour. Self-initiated management approaches provide a resource that has yet to be discovered and systematically used in occupational therapy practice. This resource might be especially important for people with dementia who are less likely to adopt management approaches initiated by others. Aims/objectives Based on the findings of former studies on management and problem-solving actions among people with cognitive impairment, this article aims to identify and categorize the study participants self-initiated management approaches and how these may be manifested in strategies in everyday occupations. Material and methods The study utilized a form of meta-synthesis; an aggregated analysis, where findings from 11 studies published 2004-2020 were compared and categorized, incorporating the views of participants with dementia/mild cognitive impairment, or acquired brain injury. Results Thirty strategies were identified and grouped into seven categories of management approaches, used in a variety of everyday occupations and situations. A majority of the strategies were found in both populations, suggesting that management approaches are more similar than different across populations with cognitive impairment. Abstract

This article reports the results of a socio-legal investigation into how continued work among people living with progressive cognitive impairments such as mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or early onset dementia (EOD) can be supported. This study that makes use of empirical data collected in Finland, Sweden and Canada seeks to give voice to people living with MCI or EOD and set their experiential knowledge in dialogue with equality rights related tools provided by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). The results illustrate that there are effective tools available that remove barriers to participation and support continued work of employees living with cognitive impairments at least for some time while impairments are mild. Ideally, flexibility and solidarity in the workplace automatically eliminates the effects of individual impairment. However, cognitive impairments are often such that along with general accessibility measures individual accommodations are needed. 17. Experiences of influencing one’s own life when living with working age dementia

Abstract

Having opportunities to make decisions and choices regarding one’s life is crucial when living with dementia. This interdisciplinary study draws on the concept of relational autonomy to explore how working age people living with dementia seek to influence their lives, and what makes it easier or more difficult for them in their everyday life. The data consist of three focus group discussions conducted with 12 retired adults who developed dementia while still employed. The results illuminate various resources that enable a person to 1) handle their difficulties at work and their consequences with dignity, 2) manage everyday tasks and live a fulfilling life, and 3) fight the stigma associated with (working age) dementia. Challenges related to these aspects reported by the participants reveal gaps and obstacles that impede the full realisation of the rights of people living with early onset dementia. This research highlights the need for workplace education for different stakeholders, equal and ongoing access to guidance and counselling for younger people who live with dementia, and an effort by society as a whole to eradicate stigma.

Abstract

This article describes a case study reflecting how practitioners could apply a solution-focused approach in dementia counselling, particularly when people develop mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or young-onset dementia whilst still working. The work we report here was undertaken as part of an international multi-disciplinary project, ‘Dementia or mild cognitive impairment: @ Work in Progress’. It is also part of the Finnish project ‘Working Life and Memory Impairment – Mental Wellbeing, Legal Security and Occupational Capacity of People with Early Onset Dementia’ (WoLMI)’. These projects aim to increase knowledge about situations when individuals develop MCI or young-onset dementia while still working, including finding ways to support and improve their mental well-being and legal security. Specifically, we seek to reach the appropriate working life practices, support services and ways to promote autonomy, occupational capacity, and agency of a person with MCI or young-onset dementia. In our efforts, we implemented a solution-focused approach. According to the case study, a solution-focused approach is applicable in counselling, aiming to find individual solutions, strengths, and resources in a changed life situation. We adapted it to explore how it might help people with MCI or young-onset dementia process their situation and recognise their strengths and opportunities. Abstract

This multidisciplinary project (occupational therapy, psychology, elder law and labour law, social and political science, and engineering) will provide new insights into what happens when people develop mild cognitive impairment or early stage dementia while still working, how this is infuenced by legislation, and how it is experienced and potentially managed by those concerned. The empirical project will include case studies and the joint compilation of information gathered from the case studies from different countries, providing in-depth understanding of how their situation and transition process might be experienced and managed, and of the influencing conditions, particularly related to the role of technology. Technology might be a hindrance as well as an asset in different cases, that is; technology might not be the solution for all. Development and evaluation of new tools will be included in cases. Based on knowledge generated in these longitudinal case studies, we will co-create a new computer-based tool to support the person in the transition, for example by supporting communication, education, and adapted occupation. We will also investigate how laws, regulations and policies in different countries and organizations can support and/or hinder continued work and/or transition from work, how these are practiced and how they can be understood better by people with dementia/MCI and their employers. Researchers from Sweden, Finland and Canada will collaborate with people with MCI/dementia in the workplace, their families, employers and HR staf. An interdisciplinary, in-depth inquiry into cases in all countries, in combination with analyses of legal regulations and their translation into practice, will add profound new conceptual understanding to produce new guidelines, tools and technologies that enable people with MCI/dementia to take a lead role in managing and choosing their work life and that support these persons, employers, and workplaces as well as the soc

28. Young people's narratives of depression.

Abstract

This article reports on findings from a study, which aimed to gain insight into young people's depression as a part of their life course by analysing written accounts of 81 young Finnish people who self-identified as having been depressed. The participants’ accounts were seen as reflecting both their actual life and their narrative interpretations of it in relation to the prevailing normative conceptions regarding youth. The accounts can be grouped into four main story types. The story type referred to asgrowing up on a sidetrackdepicts depression as having its origins in childhood adversities that hinder the realisation of normative goals.Falling off the trackdepicts how a young person's life can be derailed as a result of experiences that cause or exacerbate depression. In the storymissing the track, depression is intertwined with one's experience of failure in meeting normative expectations, whereas the storyquestioning the trackfeatures the problematisation of such expectations. The results underscore the importance of tackling different adverse conditions in childhood, adolescence and young adulthood in a timely fashion, as well as the importance of therapy, counselling and guidance, which help young people to manage difficulties and depression in their life. Abstract

This study examines young people's views of communicating their depression. The study is based on Finnish young people's accounts collected via the Internet. The data consist of 61 written narratives, messages sent during two online group discussions with 20 participants and online individual interviews with four young people. The data were analysed from the frame analytic perspective with the aim of identifying the frames young people use to explain their decisions about communicating their depression. Three different frames were found. Withinthe frame of support, communicating meantseeking supportbut was also seen asburdening. Withinthe frame of connection, young people characterised communicating either assucceedingorfailing in forming a connection. Abstract

Background: Striving to cope with day-to-day challenges is a basic human behaviour. Self-initiated management approaches provide a resource that has yet to be discovered and systematically used in occupational therapy practice. This resource might be especially important for people with dementia who are less likely to adopt management approaches initiated by others., Aims/objectives: Based on the findings of former studies on management and problem-solving actions among people with cognitive impairment, this article aims to identify and categorize the study participants' self-initiated management approaches and how these may be manifested in strategies in everyday occupations., Material and Methods: The study utilized a form of meta-synthesis; an aggregated analysis, where findings from 11 studies published 2004-2020 were compared and categorized, incorporating the views of participants with dementia/mild cognitive impairment, or acquired brain injury., Results: Thirty strategies were identified and grouped into seven categories of management approaches, used in a variety of everyday occupations and situations. A majority of the strategies were found in both populations, suggesting that management approaches are more similar than different across populations with cognitive impairment., Conclusions and Significance: Attending to the rich variation of self-initiated management approaches/strategies among persons with cognitive impairment offers possibilities for developing occupational therapy interventions.
