Magnesium (Mg) is an essential plant macronutrient responsible for modulating many physiological or biochemical processes such as photosynthetic activity, amino acid synthesis and nucleotide metabolism. Agricultural soils with a more-than-adequate availability of calcium (Ca) have inherent Mg deficiency, potentially resulting in overall reduced soil productivity and crop yield potential. We conducted a field experiment to investigate the optimum soil application of Mg to increase crop growth and productivity under calcareous soil conditions. In addition to recommended soil application of mineral fertilizers, we applied the following four levels of Mg to the soil in the form of anhydrous MgSO4: control, 4 kg Mg ha−1 (Mg4), 8 kg Mg ha−1 (Mg8) and 16 kg Mg ha−1 (Mg16). Results showed that Mg16 application enhanced the plant height (21%), number of grains (18%), 1,000 grains weight (20%), grain yield (20%) and biological yield (9%) over control (p ≤ 0.05). Chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and total chlorophyll were generally higher at the Mg8 and Mg16 levels than at the control level. Contrasting to increases in growth traits, the concentration of K significantly decreased in grains, leaves and shoots of maize along the soil’s Mg gradient (p ≤ 0.05). We suggest that Mg16 overcomes the deficiency of soil Mg and can increase the crop yield traits in calcareous soils. More investigations of the effect of soil Mg on various crops grown in calcareous soils may add to our knowledge related to the stressing impact of soil Mg on plant K concentration.

The study was carried out to determine the effects of optimum cultureconditions (substrate to water ratio, incubation period and salt concentrations, e.g. MgSO4.7H2O, CaCl2, KH2PO4 and urea) to increase the nutritive value of wheat straw (WS) by solid-state fermentation (SSF) with Arachniotus species. The performance of SSF product was evaluated in terms of favorable change in the crude protein (CP) contents of WS. Wheat straw based inoculum (seed culture) of Arachniotus sp. was prepared. WS (5gm) in 250 mL conical flask was mixed with a basal medium containing selected salts to attain the desired levels of water and nutrient concentration. A significant (p<0.001) increased CP contents was observed at 1:2 substrate water ratio at 4th day of incubation period. Maximum fungal protein contents in treated wheat strawwere found by addition of 0.05%, 0.075%, 0.15% and 0.15% ofMgSO4.7H2O, CaCl2, KH2PO4 and urea respectively. It was thus concluded that enhanced protein contents were achieved by incubation of wheat straw at 1:2 substrate water ratio with our selected salts concentrations during 4 days of incubation at 28°C.Hence,our findings highly support the use of above salts at our optimized concentrations for bioprocessing of wheat straw with Arachniotusspecies. Chromium (Cr) toxicity is becoming one of a major issue for the cultivation of crops. Toxicity of Cr directly affects synthesis of chlorophyll and restricts Fe intake, which decreases crop growth. It is well documented that the reduction of Cr toxicity through the application of biochar. However, current experiment was carried out to investigate any positive effect of, banana peel waste biochar (BC) and foliar application of Fe (FFe) on growth and chlorophyll content of Spinacia oleracea L. under different levels of Cr toxicity. Seeds of Spinacia oleracea L. were grown under three levels of Cr i.e. control (Cr0), Cr35 (35 mg Cr kg−1 soil) and Cr70 (70 mg Cr kg-1 soil). Analyzed data confirmed that Spinacia oleracea L. seeds grown in 1% BC amended soils and 1000mM FFe, showed significantly better growth, Fe uptake and chlorophyll content as compared to control at Cr35 and Cr70. A significant improvement in shoot length (16.9 and 26.9%), root length (16.3 and 20.9%), plant fresh (15.5 and 28.3%) and dry weight (70.3 and 77.8%) as compared to control under Cr35 and Cr70, respectively, validated the efficacious functioning of 1% BC and FFe to mitigate Cr toxicity in Spinacia oleracea L. It is concluded that both 1% banana peel waste BC and 1000mM FFe have potential but sole application of FFe is more effective to alleviate Cr toxicity in Spinacia oleracea L. Fortification of Fe by foliar application is more effective comparative to banana peel waste biochar for improvement in growth, chlorophyll content and accessory pigments synthesis in spinach under chromium (IV) toxicity.

Reninoma, a renin-secreting tumor of the juxta-glomerular cells of the kidney, is a rare but surgically treatable cause of secondary hypertension in children. We report a case of reninoma presenting as cardiac syncope with long QTc on electrocardiogram due to hypokalemia.

Background : Bear mauling is rarely reported in medical literature due to its rare occurrence. Present study was undertaken to describe the pattern and management of bear maul vascular injuries in Kashmir. Methods : Study of patients with bear maul vascular injury from 1st Jan 2004 to 31st Dec. 2008. Fifteen patients with bear maul vascular injury were studied. All patients of bear maul without vascular injury were excluded from the study. Results : Most of the patients were treated by reverse saphenous vein graft or end to end anastomosis. Most common complication was wound infection (20%) followed by graft occlusion (13.33%). There was no operative death. Conclusion : Bear attacks are very common in Kashmir. Vascular injury due to bear maul needs prompt resuscitation and revascularization. Results are very good provided timely intervention for revascularization is done.

Background: This meta-analysis aims to evaluate and compare the clinical and angiographic outcomes of different management strategies for partially thrombosed intracranial aneurysms (PTIAs)., Methods: A systematic review was conducted using MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science databases up to September 2024. Studies providing clinical and angiographic outcomes of PTIAs were included. Favorable outcomes were defined as those reported directly in the studies or, when the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) was available, as an mRS score of 0-2. Statistical analysis was conducted using R, with pooled estimates under a random-effects model., Results: Eighteen studies involving 362 patients with 363 PTIAs were analyzed. Favorable neurological outcomes were observed in 76% of patients, while 20% experienced procedure-related complications. Recurrence occurred in 36% of cases, and retreatment was required in 23%. Mortality was low at 0.8%. Subgroup analysis revealed that reconstructive approaches were associated with higher rates of favorable outcomes (72%) and lower complication rates (21%) compared with deconstructive methods (60% and 28%, respectively). Among the reconstructive techniques, flow diverter stenting showed the highest rate of favorable outcomes (82%), while simple coiling had the lowest (71%). Additionally, unruptured PTIAs had a significantly better prognosis, with 69% achieving favorable outcomes, fewer complications (22% vs 51% for ruptured), and lower mortality (0.8% vs 27%) compared with ruptured aneurysms. Among the reconstructive techniques, flow diverter stenting showed the best outcomes., Conclusion: PTIAs treated with reconstructive approaches that are unruptured, non-giant, and located in the anterior circulation show higher rates of favorable neurological outcomes with acceptable complications. Appropriate host-microbiota interactions are essential for maintaining intestinal homeostasis; hence, an imbalance in these interactions leads to inflammation-associated intestinal diseases. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) recognize microbial ligands and play a key role in host-microbe interactions in health and disease. TLR13 has a well-established function in enhancing host defenses against pathogenic bacteria. However, its role in maintaining intestinal homeostasis and controlling colitis-associated colon cancer (CAC) is largely unknown. This study aimed to investigate the involvement of TLR13-mediated signaling in intestinal homeostasis and colonic tumorigenesis using ex vivo cell and in vivo CAC animal model. Tlr13-deficient mice were prone to dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis. During the early stages of the CAC regimen (AOM/DSS-treated), Tlr13 deficiency led to severe ulcerative colitis. Moreover, Tlr13-deficient mice exhibited increased intestinal permeability, as evidenced by elevated levels of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-dextran, endotoxins, and bacterial translocation. Enhanced cell survival and proliferation of colonic intestinal cells were observed in Tlr13-deficient mice. A transcriptome analysis revealed that Tlr13 deficiency is associated with substantial changes in gene expression profile of colonic tumor tissue. Tlr13-deficient mice were more susceptible to CAC, with increased production of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-12, and TNF-α cytokines and enhanced STAT3, NF-κB, and MAPK signaling in colon tissues. These findings suggest that TLR13 plays a protective role in maintaining intestinal homeostasis and controlling CAC. The development of selective and practically applicable sensors for monitoring trace uranyl ions (UO 2 2+ ) in an aqueous medium is the biggest challenge. This study presents the development of a conjugated oligoelectrolyte-based probe (COE) for the selective detection of UO 2 2+ ions in water bodies. The COE is a water-soluble probe having an organic backbone with two ionic pendants at the terminal points. It changes its color to a dark yellow selectively in the presence of UO 2 2+ ions. This visible change was integrated with a smartphone RGB color quantification method. The COE displayed an RGB chemo-dosimeter to selectively monitor UO 2 2+ ions without interference from other metal ions. In the parallel experiment, COE displays a spectrofluorimetric emission signal at λ ems.  = 525 nm (with λ exc.  = 420 nm), which exhibits quenching of signal when interacted with UO 2 2+ ions. The limit of detection (LOD) is found to be 3.07 × 10 -2 µM and 4.50 µM by spectrofluorimetric and RGB color value methods, respectively. 1 H NMR and XPS analysis investigated the mode of interaction, and it suggested that the quenching of the emission signal was due to the interaction between the electron-rich azomethine site of COE and UO 2 2+ ion. Rice blast, caused by the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae (syn. Pyricularia oryzae), is a major problem in rice cultivation and ranks among the most severe fungal diseases. Cloning and identifying resistance genes in rice, coupled with a comprehensive examination of the interaction between M. oryzae and rice, may provide insights into the mechanisms of rice disease resistance and facilitate the creation of new rice varieties with improved germplasm. These efforts are essential for protecting food security. This review examines the discovery of genes that confer resistance or susceptiblity to M. oryzae in rice over the last decade. It also discusses how knowledge of molecular mechanisms has been used in rice breeding and outlines key strategies for creating rice varieties resistant to this disease. The strategies discussed include gene pyramiding, molecular design breeding, editing susceptibility genes, and increasing expression of resistance genes through pathogen challenge. We address the prospects and challenges in breeding for rice blast resistance, emphasizing the need to fully exploit germplasm resources, employ cutting-edge methods to identify new resistance genes, and develop innovative breeding cultivars. Objective: To assess the capability of the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE-II), Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scores, Cardiac Surgery Score (CASUS), and Survival After VA-ECMO (SAVE) in predicting outcomes among a cohort of patients undergoing venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO)., Design: This is an observational retrospective study of 142 patients admitted to the cardiothoracic intensive care unit (CTICU) after undergoing VA-ECMO insertion., Setting: CTICU of a tertiary care center., Participants: All patients admitted to the CTICU for a minimum of 24 hours, post-VA-ECMO insertion, between 2015 and 2022., Interventions: Review of electronic patient records., Measurements and Results: Scores for APACHE-II, SOFA, and CASUS were calculated 24 hours after intensive care units (ICU) admission. The SAVE score was computed from the last available patient details within 24 hours of ECMO insertion. Relevant demographic, clinical, and laboratory data for the study was retrieved from electronic patient records. Pre-ECMO serum levels of lactates and creatinine were significantly associated with mortality. Lower ECMO flow rates at 4 and 12 hours post-ECMO cannulation were significantly correlated with survival to discharge. The development of arrhythmias, acute kidney injury, and the need for continuous renal replacement therapy while on ECMO were significantly associated with mortality. The APACHE-II, SOFA, and CASUS scores, calculated at 24 hours of ICU admission, were significantly higher amongst nonsurvivors. Following risk score categorization using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, it was found that APACHE-II, SOFA, and CASUS scores calculated 24 hours post-ICU admission after ECMO insertion demonstrated moderate predictive ability for mortality. In contrast, the SAVE score failed to predict mortality. APACHE-II >27 (area under the curve = 0.66), calculated 24 hours post-ICU admission after ECMO insertion, showed the greatest predictive ability for mortality. Multivariate logistic regression analysis of the four scores showed that APACHE-II >27 and SOFA >14, calculated 24 hours post-ICU admission after ECMO insertion, were independently significantly predictive of mortality., Conclusion: The APACHE-II, SOFA, and CASUS, calculated at 24 hours of ICU admission, were significantly higher among nonsurvivors compared with survivors. The APACHE-II demonstrated the highest mortality predictive ability. Purpose: Contrast enhancement (CE) after mechanical thrombectomy (MT) remains a subject of investigation, with a reported prevalence ranging from 31 to 88%. We examined our patients to identify predictors of CE and its impact on outcomes, an aspect that remains understudied., Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 106 patients who underwent MT at our hospital between 2018 and 2022. The inclusion criteria involved patients who underwent two head CT scans: one immediately after the procedure and a repeat scan within 24 h. This study compared demographic, clinical, laboratory, neuroimaging, and procedure-related variables between patients with CE and those without hyperdensity. Regression analysis was employed to determine the associations between CEs and significant variables., Results: Among the analyzed patients, 32.1% had CE. Hyperlipidemia was more prevalent in the CE group. CE correlated with an increase in the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score ≥ 4 within 24 h, intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) incidence, elevated NIHSS score, and a decreased rate of modified Rankin scale (mRS) 0-3 upon discharge. The adjusted model demonstrated a significant association between CE and the incidence of hyperlipidemia and ICH, with an increase in NIHSS score ≥ 4 within 24 h of ICH and a lower mRS score of 0-3 upon discharge., Conclusions: CE is associated with hyperlipidemia, ICH, early neurological deterioration, and poor functional outcomes upon discharge. An extracellular matrix protein, fibronectin (Fn), was covalently immobilized on 316L stainless steel, L605 cobalt chromium (CoCr), and nickel titanium (NiTi) surfaces through an 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) pre-formed on these surfaces. Polarization modulation infrared reflection adsorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS) confirmed the presence of Fn on the surfaces. The Fn monolayer attached to the SAM was found to be stable under fluid shear stress. Deconvolution of the Fn amide I band indicated that the secondary structure of Fn changes significantly upon immobilization to the SAM-functionalized metal substrate. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis revealed that the spacing between Fn molecules on a modified commercial stent surface is approximately 66 nm, which has been reported to be the most appropriate spacing for cell/surface interactions.

Facial expressions vary with different health conditions, making a facial expression recognition (FER) system valuable within a healthcare framework. Achieving accurate recognition of facial expressions is a considerable challenge due to the difficulty in capturing subtle features. This research introduced an ensemble neural random forest method that utilizes convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture for feature extraction and optimized random forest for classification. For feature extraction, four convolutional layers with different numbers of filters and kernel sizes are used. Further, the maxpooling, batch normalization, and dropout layers are used in the model to expedite the process of feature extraction and avoid the overfitting of the model. The extracted features are provided to the optimized random forest for classification, which is based on the number of trees, criterion, maximum tree depth, maximum terminal nodes, minimum sample split, and maximum features per tree, and applied to the classification process. To demonstrate the significance of the proposed model, we conducted a thorough assessment of the proposed neural random forest through an extensive experiment encompassing six publicly available datasets. The remarkable weighted average recognition rate of 97.3% achieved across these diverse datasets highlights the effectiveness of our approach in the context of FER systems.

This prospect explores the integration of enrichment strategies with nanopore detection to advance clinical glycoproteomics. Glycoproteins, crucial for understanding biological processes, pose challenges due to their low abundance and structural diversity. Enrichment techniques using lectin affinity, boronate affinity, and hydrazide chemistry and especially molecular imprinted polymers may selectively and specifically isolate glycoproteins from complex samples, while nanopore technology enables label-free, real-time, and single-molecule analysis. This approach holds promise for disease-related glycosylation studies, biomarker discovery, personalized medicine, and streamlined clinical analysis. Standardization, optimization, and data analysis remain challenges, requiring interdisciplinary collaborations and technological advancements. Aim: Breast cancer is the most recurring cancer among females and is being diagnosed as a major cause of death among women. Materials & methods: Levosulpiride Schiff base derivatives were synthesized and analyzed by physical and spectral (FTIR, 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR) analysis. MTT assay against MCF-7 (human breast cancer cell line), scavenging activity and Molecular docking against receptors 1M17, 3PP0, 3IOK and 4KIK along ADME pharmacokinetic studies were performed. Results & conclusion: L1 and L3 synthesized derivatives have revealed better percent cell viability and inhibitory concentration (IC 50 ) with scavenging activity as of the parent compound. L1, L3 and L9 revealed significant docking scores compared with standard drugs. Most of the derivatives showed strong pharmacokinetic profiles while no drug crossed blood-brain barrier. The newly synthesized L1 and L3 levosulpiride-derived compounds have demonstrated promising anticancer properties against breast cancer cells.

The inorganic matrices such as metal concentrates, steel, cement, glass, clay, coal, graphite, rocks and sediments, ores etc. play a pivotal role in infrastructure development, transportation, and energy. The presence of non-metallic elements particularly halogens influence their quality, processing cost, and environment dynamics. The analysis of non-metals in such matrices is critically challenging due to their hardness, rigidity, and non-digestibility. This comprehensive review provides a critical comparison of various sample preparation methods in conjunction with pros and cons of advanced techniques for the detection of non-metals in complex matrices, particularly focusing on ion chromatography. Moreover, the review also addresses the challenges related to the enrichment and automation of non-metals analysis. In addition, the previous literature on non-metals determination in diverse range of inorganic matrices has been tabulated for the first time. Aim: Dengue fever (DF), carried by Aedes mosquitoes, affects millions worldwide. Platelet-inducing human IL-11 analogues may be effective in treating DF-associated thrombocytopenia., Methodology: A prospective study was done at Dr. Ziauddin Hospital, a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan, from September 2023 to April 30, 2024., Results: This study recruited 300 DF patients characterized by thrombocytopenia (platelet count < 30,000), including 159 in the treatment and 141 in the control group. The median age of patients was 34 ± 11.05 years, with 187 males (62.3%) and 113 females (37.7%). The treatment group had a higher proportion of fever (80%, p < 0.0001) and headache (96%, p = 0.012) compared to the control group; however, no significant changes were observed in other clinical parameters between the two groups. Following treatment for 5 days, platelet counts of the treatment group increased significantly in response to IL-11 treatment compared to the control group at all time intervals (day 0, day 1, day 2, day 3, day 4, and day 5). Following treatment, males consistently exhibited higher platelet counts than females (all p < 0.05). In addition, patients admitted on day 3 of their course of illness showed a significantly slow response to the treatment compared to those admitted on day 5. Although young individuals exhibited a significant increase in platelet count, the age showed no significant intergroup differences., Conclusions: IL-11 analogs have promising potential for treating DF-associated thrombocytopenia. Psoriasis, a prevalent inflammatory skin condition impacting millions globally, continues to pose treatment challenges, despite the availability of multiple therapies. This underscores the demand for innovative treatments. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have emerged as a promising therapeutic option due to their capacity to modulate the immune system and facilitate tissue healing. Recent research indicates that MSCs don't just work through direct cell-to-cell interactions but also release extracellular vesicles (EVs), containing various bioactive substances like proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. This article explores our current knowledge of psoriasis's origins and the potential utilization of MSCs and their EVs, particularly exosomes, in managing the condition. Additionally, we delve into how MSCs and EVs function in therapy, including their roles in regulating immune responses and promoting tissue repair. Hierarchical porous hypercrosslinked monoliths (PolyHIPE-HCP) with ultrahigh specific surface areas are prepared via a solvent knitting strategy. Compared to previous work, the solvent knitting strategy is carried out in a relatively low air-controlled atmosphere with gradient heating starting from low temperature while using DCM (Dichloromethane) as both a solvent and a cross-linker, allowing for a slow and controlled cross-linking process, thereby achieving a BET surface area ranging from 514 to 728 m 2  g -1 . Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows that the knitting process does not affect the presence of macroporous structure in the PolyHIPE. With the introduction of mesopores and micropores, these hierarchical porous monoliths exhibit significant potential for applications in gas adsorption and water treatment. Hence, a universal, simple and low-cost method to synthesize polymeric monoliths with hierarchically porous structure and higher surface area is proposed, which has fascinating prospects in industrialization., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have garnered attention for their potential in photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) production. However, their photocatalytic efficiency is impeded by insufficient exciton dissociation and charge carrier transport. Constructing COFs with superior planarity is an effective way to enhance the π-conjugation degree and facilitate electron-hole separation. Nonetheless, the conventional linear linkers of COFs inevitably introduce torsional strain that disrupts coplanarity. Herein, we address this issue by introducing inherently coplanar triazine rings as linkers and fused building blocks as monomers to create covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) with superior coplanarity. Both experimental and theoretical calculations confirm that CTFs constructed from fused building blocks significantly enhance the electron-hole separation efficiency and improve the photocatalytic performance, compared to the CTFs constructed with non-fused building blocks. The frontier molecular orbitals and electrostatic potentials (ESP) revealed that the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is preferentially facilitated by the triazine rings, with the water oxidation reaction (WOR) likely occurring at the thiophene-containing moiety. Remarkably, CTF-BTT achieved an exceptional H 2 O 2 production rate of 74956 μmol g -1  h -1 when employing 10 % benzyl alcohol (V/V) as a sacrificial agent in an O 2 -saturated atmosphere, surpassing existing photocatalysts by nearly an order of magnitude. The use of plant seed-based hydrogels to design drug delivery systems (DDSs) has increased due to their swellable, pH-responsive, biocompatible, biodegradable, and non-toxic nature. Herein, the chia seeds hydrogel (CSH) was extracted through an aqueous extraction method to explore its pH and salt-responsive swelling behavior and sustained release potential. The CSH was characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and solid-state cross-polarization magic angle spinning carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (solid/state CP-MAS 13 C/NMR) spectra. Thermal analysis indicated that the CSH is a thermally stable material and decomposes in two steps. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of CSH witnessed the existence of microscopic channeling and a superporous nature with average pore sizes of 18 ± 11 μm (transverse cross-sections) and 23 ± 15 μm (longitudinal cross-sections). The CSH is a haemocompatible material. The CSH revealed pH and saline-responsive swelling in powder and compressed form (tablet) in the following order; distilled water (DW) > pH 7.4 > pH 6.8 > pH 1.2. Moreover, the swelling of CSH followed second-order kinetics. The swelling of CSH powder and tablets was decreased with increasing salt concentration. The pH, solvent, and saline responsive on/off switching (swelling/deswelling) results of the CSH and tablets disclosed its stimuli-responsive nature. The CSH prolonged the release of valsartan for 5 h at pH 7.4, whereas, negligible release (19.3%) was noted at pH 1.2. The valsartan release followed first-order kinetics and the non-Fickian diffusion. In this study, a new Schiff base, (E)-2-(2-aminophenylthio)-N-(thiophen-2-yl-methylene) benzenamine was synthesized for selective detection of Hg 2+ . This Schiff base was characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 HNMR), carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance ( 13 CNMR), and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Binding interaction between (E)-2-(2-aminophenylthio)-N-(thiophen-2-yl-methylene)benzenamine and various metal ions has been studied by UV-Vis spectroscopic measurements and shows promising coordination towards Hg 2+ and almost no interference from other metal ions (Ag + , Mn 2+ , Fe 3+ , Al 3+ , Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ , Fe 2+ and Cr 3+ ).This Schiff base exhibiting detection limit of 3.8 × 10 - 8  M. The Schiff base newly synthesized in this study was successfully applied to the determination of Hg 2+ in water samples. In addition to the experimental study, a theoretical study was conducted using Gaussian 09 program to support the experimental findings. Purpose: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to systematically evaluate and enhance the understanding of optimal management strategies for serpentine aneurysms., Methods: A systematic search was conducted in Medline, Scopus, and Cochrane databases up to July 8, 2024, using relevant keywords. Studies included were case series, prospective or retrospective cohorts, or randomized controlled trials with data on clinical and angiographic outcomes of intracranial serpentine aneurysms. Data extraction and quality assessment were performed independently by two authors. Statistical analysis was conducted using R, with pooled estimates under a random-effects model., Results: Ten studies comprising 70 patients with 71 serpentine aneurysms were included. The majority (92.9%) were giant aneurysms. The overall rate of procedure-related complications was 33%, morbidity was 13%, and mortality was 13%. Good neurological outcomes were achieved in 76% of cases. For unruptured aneurysms, the complication rate was 34%, while no complications were observed in ruptured aneurysms. Comparative analysis between ruptured and unruptured aneurysms showed no significant differences in outcomes or complications. The technical success rate was 91%. Nucleus is the central regulator of cells that controls cell proliferation, metabolism, and cell cycle, and is considered the most important organelle in cells. The precision medicine that can achieve nuclear targeting has achieved good therapeutic effects in anti-tumor therapy. However, the presence of biological barriers such as cell membranes and nuclear membranes in cells limit the delivery of therapeutic agents to the nucleus. Therefore, developing effective nuclear-targeting drug delivery strategies is particularly important. Nuclear-targeting peptides are a class of functional peptides that can penetrate cell membranes and target the nucleus. They mainly recognize and bind to the nuclear transport molecules (such as Importin-α/β) and transport the therapeutic agents to the nucleus through nuclear pore complexes (NPC). Rice blast is a major problem in agriculture, affecting rice production and threatening food security worldwide. This disease, caused by the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, has led to a lot of research since the discovery of the first resistance gene, pib, in 1999. Researchers have now identified more than 50 resistance genes on eight of the twelve chromosomes in rice, each targeting different strains of the pathogen.These genes are spread out across seventeen different loci. These genes, which primarily code for nucleotide-binding and leucine-rich repeat proteins, play an important part in the defense of rice against the pathogen, either alone or in combination with other genes. An important characteristic of these genes is the allelic or paralogous interactions that exist within these loci. These relationships contribute to the gene's increased capacity for evolutionary adaptation. The ability of resistance proteins to recognize and react to novel effectors is improved by the frequent occurrence of variations within the domains that are responsible for recognizing pathogen effectors. The purpose of this review is to summarize the progress that has been made in identifying these essential genes and to investigate the possibility of utilizing the allelic variants obtained from these genes in future rice breeding efforts to increase resistance to rice blast., (© 2024. This study presents a computational analysis of fluid flow characteristics around two staggered arranged square cylinders using the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM). With Reynolds number (Re) fixed at 200, numerical simulations explore the influence of varying gap ratios (G) ranging from 0 to 10 times the cylinder size. Emphasis is placed on understanding the impact of cylinders spacing on flow structure mechanisms and induced forces. Investigation of fluid flow parameters includes vorticity behavior, pressure streamlines, and variations in drag and lift coefficients alongside the Strouhal number under different values of G. From the results, four distinct flow patterns emerge: single bluff body flow, flip flopping flow, modulated synchronized flow, and synchronized flow, each exhibiting unique characteristics. This study reveals the strong dependence of fluid forces on G, with low spacing values leading to complex vortex structures and fluctuating forces influenced by jet flow effects. At higher spacing values, proximity effects between cylinders diminish, resulting in a smoother periodic flow. The Strouhal number, average drag force and the rms values of drag and lift force coefficients vary abruptly at narrow gaps and become smooth at higher gap ratios. Unlike the tandem and side-by-side arrangements the staggered cylinders arrangement is found to have significant impact on the pressure variations around both cylinders. The utilization of biowastes for producing biochar to remove potentially toxic elements from water represents an important pathway for aquatic ecosystem decontamination. Here we explored the significance of thiol-functionalization on sugarcane bagasse biochar (Th/SCB-BC) and rice husk biochar (Th/RH-BC) to enhance arsenite (As(III)) removal capacity from water and compared their efficiency with both pristine biochars (SCB-BC and RH-BC). The maximum As(III) sorption was found on Th/SCB-BC and Th/RH-BC (2.88 and 2.51 mg g -1 , respectively) compared to the SCB-BC and RH-BC (1.51 and 1.40 mg g -1 ). Relatively, a greater percentage of As(III) removal was obtained with Th/SCB-BC and Th/RH-BC (92% and 83%, respectively) at a pH 7 compared to pristine SCB-BC and RH-BC (65% and 55%) at 6 mg L -1 initial As(III) concentration, 2 h contact time and 1 g L -1 sorbent dose. Langmuir (R 2  = 0.99) isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic (R 2  = 0.99) models provided the best fits to As(III) sorption data. Desorption experiments indicated that the regeneration ability of biochars decreased and it was in the order of Th/SCB-BC (88%) > Th/RH-BC (82%) > SCB-BC (77%) > RH-BC (69%) up to three sorption-desorption cycles. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results demonstrated that the thiol (-S-H) functional groups were successfully grafted on the surface of two biochars and as such contributed to enhance As(III) removal from water. Spectroscopic data indicated that the surface functional moieties, such as -S-H, - OH, - COOH, and C = O were involved to increase As(III) sorption on thiol-functionalized biochars. This study highlights that thiol-grafting on both biochars, notably on SCB-BC, enhanced their ability to remove As(III) from water, which can be used as an effective technique for the treatment of As from drinking water., (© 2024. Many viral, protozoal, and fungal pathogens represent major human and animal health problems due to their great potential of causing infectious diseases. Research on these pathogens has contributed substantially to our current understanding of both microbial virulence determinants and host key factors during infection. Countless studies have also shed light on the molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions that are employed by these microbes. For example, actin cytoskeletal dynamics play critical roles in effective adhesion, host cell entry, and intracellular movements of intruding pathogens. Cortactin is an eminent host cell protein that stimulates actin polymerization and signal transduction, and recently emerged as fundamental player during host-pathogen crosstalk. Here we review the important role of cortactin as major target for various prominent viral, protozoal and fungal pathogens in humans, and its role in human disease development and cancer progression. Most if not all of these important classes of pathogens have been reported to hijack cortactin during infection through mediating up- or downregulation of cortactin mRNA and protein expression as well as signaling. In particular, pathogen-induced changes in tyrosine and serine phosphorylation status of cortactin at its major phospho-sites (Y-421, Y-470, Y-486, S-113, S-298, S-405, and S-418) are addressed. As has been reported for various Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, many pathogenic viruses, protozoa, and fungi also control these regulatory phospho-sites, for example, by activating kinases such as Src, PAK, ERK1/2, and PKD, which are known to phosphorylate cortactin. In addition, the recruitment of cortactin and its interaction partners, like the Arp2/3 complex and F-actin, to the contact sites between pathogens and host cells is highlighted, as this plays an important role in the infection process and internalization of several pathogens. However, there are also other ways in which the pathogens can exploit the function of cortactin for their needs, as the cortactin-mediated regulation of cellular processes is complex and involves numerous different interaction partners. Glioblastoma (GB) is an aggressive brain malignancy characterized by its invasive nature. Current treatment has limited effectiveness, resulting in poor patients' prognoses. β-Amino carbonyl (β-AC) compounds have gained attention due to their potential anticancerous properties. In vitro assays were performed to evaluate the effects of an in-house synthesized β-AC compound, named SHG-8, upon GB cells. Small RNA sequencing (sRNA-seq) and biocomputational analyses investigated the effects of SHG-8 upon the miRNome and its bioavailability within the human body. SHG-8 exhibited significant cytotoxicity and inhibition of cell migration and proliferation in U87MG and U251MG GB cells. GB cells treated with the compound released significant amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Annexin V and acridine orange/ethidium bromide staining also demonstrated that the compound led to apoptosis. sRNA-seq revealed a shift in microRNA (miRNA) expression profiles upon SHG-8 treatment and significant upregulation of miR-3648 and downregulation of miR-7973. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) demonstrated a significant downregulation of CORO1C , an oncogene and a player in the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. In silico analysis indicated SHG-8's potential to cross the blood-brain barrier. This study investigates the influence of small control cylinders on the fluid dynamics around a square cylinder using the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM). Varying the gaps (L) between the main and control cylinders from 0 to 6, four distinct flow regimes are identified: the solo body regime (SBR), shear layer reattachment (SLR), suppressed fully developed flow (SFDF), and intermittent shedding (IS). The presence of control cylinders results in significant reductions in flow-induced forces, with drag coefficient (CD) and root mean square values of drag and lift coefficients (CD rms and CL rms ) decreasing by approximately 31%, 90%, and 81%, respectively. The SFDF flow regime exhibits the lowest fluid forces compared to other regimes. The effects of tiny control cylinders on the fluid flow characteristics of a square cylinder are examined using the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) in this research work. The gaps (L) between the main and control cylinders are varied in the range from 0 to 6. The size of each control cylinder is equal to one-fifth of the primary cylinder. According to the findings, there are four distinct flow regimes as the gap spacing varies: solo body regime (SBR), shear layer reattachment (SLR), suppressed fully developed flow (SFDF), and intermittent shedding (IS) for gap spacing ranges 0 ≤ L ≤ 0.2, 0.3 ≤ L ≤ 0.9, 1 ≤ L ≤ 3, and 3.2 ≤ L ≤ 6, respectively. Additionally, it has been noted that the amplitude of variable lift force is reduced when the gap separation between the main and control cylinders is increased. When compared to solo cylinder values, it is found that the presence of small control cylinders in the flow field results in a considerable reduction of flow-induced forces. The SFDF flow regime was determined to have the lowest fluid forces compared to the other flow regimes studied. Our findings highlight the efficacy of small control cylinders in mitigating flow-induced forces and controlling flow characteristics. Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Robust infection prevention and control is key to reducing risk., Aims: We describe lessons learnt from an NICU outbreak of P.aeruginosa in the main maternity hospital in the country., Methods: Cases were identified from clinical samples and active screening. Clinical information was collected from the electronic patient record. Infection prevention and control (IPC) practice observations were made using organisational checklists and unit observations. Microbiological testing was by conventional microbiological methods. Statistical analyses were performed using R program. Associations were assessed using the Mann-Whitney U or Fisher exact test. Isolates were typed by pulsed field gel electrophoresis; gel was analysed in Bionumerics software from Applied Maths, Belgium., Results: Five cases were identified - one was excluded as maternal acquisition. Typing showed a polyclonal outbreak. Widespread contamination of tap outlets of handwashing sinks in clinical areas was found. Main contributing factors were extensive misuse of hand wash sinks for waste disposal, improper sink cleaning, poor hand hygiene compliance and inadequate environmental cleaning., Discussion: Successful management required a multi-disciplinary approach. All potential water sources and moist environments within and outside the unit were investigated. Interventions successfully addressed the main contributing factors, supported by good communication and robust auditing. Acne vulgaris, rosacea, and hidradenitis suppurativa are enduring inflammatory skin conditions that frequently manifest with akin clinical attributes, posing a considerable challenge for their distinctive diagnosis. While these conditions do exhibit certain resemblances, they also demonstrate distinct underlying pathophysiological mechanisms and treatment modalities. Delving into both the molecular parallels and disparities among these three disorders can yield invaluable insights for refined diagnostics, effective management, and targeted therapeutic interventions. In this report, we present a comparative analysis of transcriptomic data across these three diseases, elucidating differentially expressed genes and enriched pathways specific to each ailment, as well as those shared among them. Specifically, we identified multiple zinc-binding proteins (SERPINA1, S100A7, S100A8, S100A9 and KRT16) as consistently highly upregulated genes across all three diseases. Our hypothesis suggests that these proteins could bind and sequester zinc, potentially leading to localized zinc deficiency and heightened inflammation. B cells and T cells collaborate in multiple sclerosis (MS) pathogenesis. IgH [MOG] mice possess a B cell repertoire skewed to recognize myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG). Here, we show that upon immunization with the T cell-obligate autoantigen, MOG [35-55] , IgH [MOG] mice develop rapid and exacerbated experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) relative to wildtype (WT) counterparts, characterized by aggregation of T and B cells in the IgH [MOG] meninges and by CD4 + T helper 17 (Th17) cells in the CNS. Production of the Th17 maintenance factor IL-23 is observed from IgH [MOG] CNS-infiltrating and meningeal B cells, and in vivo blockade of IL-23p19 attenuates disease severity in IgH [MOG] mice. In the CNS parenchyma and dura mater of IgH [MOG] mice, we observe an increased frequency of CD4 + PD-1 + CXCR5 - T cells that share numerous characteristics with the recently described T peripheral helper (Tph) cell subset. Further, CNS-infiltrating B and Tph cells from IgH [MOG] mice show increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Meningeal inflammation, Tph-like cell accumulation in the CNS and B/Tph cell production of ROS were all reduced upon p19 blockade. Aims: Cancer diagnostics have been evolving rapidly. In England, the new National Health Service Genomic Medicine Service (GMS) provides centralised access to genomic testing via seven regional Genomic Laboratory Hubs. The PATHways survey aimed to capture pathologists' experience with current diagnostic pathways and opportunities for optimisation to ensure equitable and timely access to biomarker testing., Methods: A nationwide survey was conducted with consultant pathologists from regional laboratories, via direct interviews based on a structured questionnaire. Descriptive analysis of responses was undertaken using quantitative and qualitative methods., Results: Fifteen regional centres completed the survey covering a median population size of 2.5 (1.9-3.6) million (each for n=12). The median estimated turnaround time (calendar days) for standard molecular markers in melanoma, breast and lung cancers ranged from 2 to 3 days by immunohistochemistry (excluding NTRKfus in breast and lung cancers, and PD-L1 in melanoma) and 6-15 days by real-time-PCR (excluding KIT for melanoma), to 17.5-24.5 days by next-generation sequencing (excluding PIK3CA for breast cancer). Tests were mainly initiated by pathologists and oncologists. All respondents discussed the results at multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings. The GMS roll-out was perceived to have high impact on services by 53% of respondents, citing logistical and technical issues. Enhanced education on new pathways, tissue requirements, report interpretation, providing patient information and best practice sharing was suggested for pathologists and other MDT members., Conclusion: Our survey highlighted the role of regional pathology within the evolving diagnostic landscape in England. Drought stress is one of the most severe natural disasters in terms of its frequency, length, impact intensity, and associated losses, making it a significant threat to agricultural productivity. Sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor ), a C4 plant, shows a wide range of morphological, physiological, and biochemical adaptations in response to drought stress, paving the way for it to endure harsh environments. In arid environments, sorghum exhibits enhanced water uptake and reduced dissipation through its morphological activity, allowing it to withstand drought stress. Sorghum exhibits physiological and biochemical resistance to drought, primarily by adjusting its osmotic potential, scavenging reactive oxygen species, and changing the activities of its antioxidant enzymes. In addition, certain sorghum genes exhibit downregulation capabilities in response to drought stress. Therefore, in the current review, we explore drought tolerance in sorghum, encompassing its morphological characteristics and physiological mechanisms and the identification and selection of its functional genes. The use of modern biotechnological and molecular biological approaches to improving sorghum resistance is critical for selecting and breeding drought-tolerant sorghum varieties.
