The gol that the authors have set themselves, through the recovery of the Dogana at Ponte della Maddalena, a historical building in total abandonment, is to create a structure that, together with other buildings already present in the Neapolitan territory, from a "welcome network and hospitality" for the many tourist who arrive in Naples.

In this paper it is presented a method of calculation for the design, sizing and verification of natural ventilation for the "St. Maria del Carmelo" in Dar es Salaam – Tanzania, a house to meet God. A wind tower is adjacent to the bell tower and is called to collect the wind to enter into an underground pipeline. There are two principles that govern the dynamics of natural ventilation: 1. the hot air, being less dense than cold air, tends to rise, thus generating the "chimney effect"; 2. the circulation of the wind around and above the building that creates a pressure difference. Another factor that causes current of air is the temperature, the more it increases more and the gas expands decreasing its density. So if the day is captured the cooler air and faster at a height higher than that of the soil, the latter being then channeled into an underground conduit, through which disperses heat still decreasing its temperature, then when this air will enter the church in touch with people, it will tend to heat up quickly, thus leading to the chimney effect, flowing so naturally by the openings at the highest altitudes of the structure. This phenomenon is even more accentuated by the presence of the solar chimney placed on top of the roof which causes a greater pressure difference between the air captured and the one that enters the environment. The study of the natural ventilation system, first shown, it was particularly complex due to the large volume of the church (designed for 2,000 faithful) and the local weather conditions. In the paper, after a brief presentation of the architectural design of the church, the basic criteria are discussed for the design of this particular ventilation system.

The engineering approach in the design of fire prevention allows the engineer to study fire pre-vention solutions that do not meet the requirements of the Rules provided that they ensure the same level of fire safety. To design interventions appropriate to ensure the fire resistance of structures, and in particular for the steel structures, the performance approach of the Rules requires the adoption of prede-fined solutions as a function only of the structural material and the required fire resistance. The performance approach of the Norms, therefore, does not take into account the loads acting on the structural element and the critical temperature, which is the temperature at which the load that can be worn in hot equals the exercise load. Often, during the design phase, some of the requirements of rules are difficult, if not impossible to meet. A practical example is that of a restoration project of a historic building, for which interventions are required non-invasive, reversible and compatible. In this paper it is presented a study that enables you to design interventions appropriate to en-sure the fire resistance of structural elements with an analytical method and, therefore, with an engineering approach. In particular, according to the fire scenario adopted, the analytical method proposed allows to determine the critical temperature of the structural element under study, depending on the working load, the resistant section and solicitation of project. Subsequently, depending on the critical temperature and the required fire resistance, it is possible to design the appropriate fire-fighting interventions.

International audience; PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) promote fertility in many animals. However, whether this is due to their conserved role in repressing repetitive elements (REs) remains unclear. Here, we show that the progressive loss of fertility in Caenorhabditis elegans lacking piRNAs is not caused by derepression of REs or other piRNA targets but, rather, is mediated by epigenetic silencing of all of the replicative histone genes. In the absence of piRNAs, downstream components of the piRNA pathway relocalize from germ granules and piRNA targets to histone mRNAs to synthesize antisense small RNAs (sRNAs) and induce transgenerational silencing. Removal of the downstream components of the piRNA pathway restores histone mRNA expression and fertility in piRNA mutants, and the inheritance of histone sRNAs in wild-type worms adversely affects their fertility for multiple generations. We conclude that sRNA-mediated silencing of histone genes impairs the fertility of piRNA mutants and may serve to maintain piRNAs across evolution.

La presenza di un'antica pietra sacra, con una croce incisa, ha dato origine alla denominazione più comune di Chiesa della Pietrasanta In questo articolo, gli autori, dopo una descrizione dettagliata delle tecnologie, innovative e tradizionali, per il restauro, illustrano criticamente le tecnologie applicate all'ipogeo, agli stucchi e ai dipinti della Chiesa su tela, evidenziando i risultati raggiunti.

In this paper it is presented a search for architectural restoration and urban redevelopment of the Market Square in Naples. What is common to the Anjou, the Masaniello revolution and Ferdinand IV of Borbone with the architect Francesco Sicuro? A square, Piazza Mercato, which for many centuries was a beat-ing heart of Naples and Neapolitans. This great City shopping center, opened in 1270 by Charles I of Anjou, after the first post-war period has been affected by a slow decline that brought the wonderful square to become a huge parking lot and saw the eitht-century fountains that adorn subjected to constant vandalism. To-day in the Market Square, as in many other places and here perhaps more than others, it is spectacularly photographed the historical stratification: there coexist the speculation of the fif-ties and sixties and the survival of quality architecture. A set, therefore, of great historical, urban, architectural and social that today is in a state of disrepair and has largely lost its ancient and vibrant shopping destination and trade. In this arrangement it becomes import the disproportionate volume of Palazzo Ottieri that if one side has denied the sea, on the other hand has strengthened the market castrum character. The research is divided into three phases: 1 “History”, which is conducted in-depth historical analysis of the sites; 2 “The existing Town Planning Tools”, which is studied either both the urban layout of the place or the set of existing planning instruments; 3 “The Project”, in which we propose a hypothesis building restoration of the facades and regeneration hypothesis of places to return to the square its former main function, that of “THE MARKET”

In recent years energy efficiency has become one of the most challenging themes for architects around the world. Energy problems and climate changes are more and more in charge of the future development of architecture. Energy-efficient approaches are incorporated into architecture as technical innovations, a particular use of materials based on the location or as utilisation of climatic conditions. Consequently, it is interesting to see what is actually built and how architects approach architectural themes in relation to climate and energy in Croatia. The paper presents a national approach to Nearly Zero- Energy Buildings (nZEB) and way in which to meet the EU 2020 energy and climate policy targets. This research focuses on the evaluation of energy-efficient design strategies of residential buildings in different climatic regions in Croatia.

In this paper it is presented a research for the enhancement, the reuse and the architectural recovery of the holy monument Annunziata, located in Cava de 'Tirreni (SA). The Annunziata resort is one of the oldest farmhouses: it’s located on the south-eastern slope of Mount Castello and it’s a destination for tourists and pilgrims from all over Italy who visit the "Little Lourdes", that is a faithful reproduction of the famous French cave. The large architectural complex, dating to 1506, is characterized by multiple layering, alterations and extensions and it includes the church of the Annunziata with its pertaining premises, the sacristy, the bell tower, the baroque St. Andrea’s chapel and the imposing structure of the former monastery with various venues, the cloister, the oratory, the pertaining spaces open. Due to its architectural value and the amplitude of its built-up volumes, it has an important urban role in the context. Starting from a thorough historical analysis of the monument and analyzing the technological and constructive systems used, it is expected to intervene by first defining a restoration project aimed at enhancing in particular the interior environments, the structural elements and finishes of the church and its pertaining premises, in full respect of the constraints of the Superintendence for the Cultural Heritage and Activities of the Campania Region, to which the building organization is subject. A second intervention is then aimed at the retraining and reuse of the former monastery, including the cloister, the oratory, the perpetual areas and the open spaces, attributing the building to a new destination, that is compatible with both the typological features originated and the capacity of the structural elements, in full respect of architectural constraints.

The Neapolitan historic centre, for his multiple historic and artistic testimonies, can be considered a real “outdoor Museum” of the city. From the itself bird’s eye view you can admire the rich structure of squares, streets, alleys, extraordinary monuments, aristocratic palaces, decent buildings and simple constructions placed into specific urban grids. Different realities that you can recognise everywhere by observing the relations with the urban context extended to more and less large morphological areas, or by going to their historic matrices which have generated them and reading their connotations in successive periods of time, or, also, by analysing the constructive and compositional aspects of the building units, introducing an open classification to explore their form, structure, deterioration, etc. Walking through the Major, Superior and Inferior Decumani, which have already been favourite locations for ancient Greeks and Romans, you can admire the prestigious facades of fifteenth and sixteenth century Palaces of Neapolitan noble families like Carafa, Filomarino, Mazziotti, Pignatelli, Marigliano. Prospectuses that become the privileged place of the evident expression of a demonstration of the noble local power, through which great figures of architects show modern techno-structural capabilities, anticipating, sometimes, ideas and modus operandi that will become more typical for the Roman, Raphaelesque and Michelangelesque Renaissance. Masonry palaces with the characteristic yellow and grey tuff, morphologically developed around a central court which is accessed by an elegant vaulted vestibule, characterised by the rigorous ashlar facies, in opus isodomum, in a style aimed at recovering a classic formal language made by emblems, shields, statues, capitals, volute, reveal a rich and innovative city. The prospectuses of the sumptuous palaces of the Parthenopean Decumani become a stimulating page to read and understand for the knowledge of the city’s historical identity, to extract data from it, in a priceless experience which offers an immediate fruition to the pleased gaze.

The aim of this work was to investigate the aerobic biodegradation of a composite under controlled composting conditions using standard test methods. Composite was formed by poly(lactic acid) (PLA), with and without the addition of maleic anhydride (MA), acting as coupling agent, thermoplastic starch (TPS) and short natural fibre (coir). For comparison its starting materials, such as TPS and matrix (containing 75 wt% of PLA and 25 wt% of TPS), were also tested. At the end of the incubation period, TPS appeared to be the most bio-susceptible material being totally biodegraded and the matrix showed a higher level of biodegradation (higher amounts of evolved CO2) than PLA, probably due to the TPS domains preferentially attacked by microorganisms and increasing the percentage of carbon dioxide produced. Fibres seemed to play a secondary role in the process as confirmed by the slight differences in carbon dioxide produced. The compatibilised composite revealed a lower percentage of evolved CO2 than the uncompatibilised one. Finally, the degradation results were confirmed by thermal properties' changes of tested materials at different incubation times, as monitored by thermal analysis, and by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses of the compost aged samples. SEM micrographs showed the formation of patterns and cracks on the surface of the materials aged in the compost evidencing a profound loss of structure. Moreover, an extended biofilm (evident also with optical microscopy observation) was detected on the biodegraded materials, thus indicating the growth of a large number of bacteria and fungi on their surfaces.

In this paper I analyse the syntax of Latin demonstratives (DEMs) hic, ille, iste, within the framework of generative grammar.1 The data show that DEMs display many similarities but also some substantial differences among each other. I argue that the freedom in the arrangement of the elements in Latin nominal expressions (NEs) is only apparent and due to a non-systematic analysis of the data, which does not take into account the distinction between basic and marked orders, the latter being derived by syntactic movement. In particular, following Giusti (1993; 1997) and Oniga (2007), I show that DEMs are always in the highest specifier of the NE, namely, in SpecDP. In addition, I demonstrate that ille but not the other demonstratives can introduce an adjective in complex appositive structures. Beyond the theoretical contribution, I will also suggest at various points in the paper how linguistic theory can be useful in updating Latin grammars for classroom activities.

The term light well, better known in Croatian language by its German term “ lichthof” is defined as a space within a building serving to bring air and light to rooms surrounding it. In the Croatian residential architecture they first appeared at the turn of the 19/20th century due to the great building depths where entrance halls and some service rooms had to be orientated to light wells. The Zagreb Building Regulations stipulated the number, size and light well characteristics. The examples of this type of residential buildings dating from the beginning of 20th century in Zagreb (Croatia) show a whole array of plan types. The Italian examples from the same period show the whole richness of this typology used in very luxurious apartments. At the end of the 1950s this type at least in Croatia disappeared due to the small building depths as well as to the allowed use of artificial ventilation and illumination in some dwelling parts (corridors, bathrooms, toilets). But at the beginning of this century especially in the POS projects (State subsidized housing) this type reappeared as an answer to the great building depths but this time of inadequate dimensions and with too many rooms orientated to it. It appeared as a sign of the time and of its values. Today this negative space (not saleable) is reduced to the minimum and is degraded and as well degrading the spaces that caused its reappearance

The paper faces a key question of urban planning: defining policies and tools to start and address urban transformation processes targeted to requalification and revitalization of areas inside the historical city and being marginal in functional, social, environmental and economic terms. In detail, the paper defines the main features of a strategic plan for implementing, within the rules fixed by the Municipal Master Plan, the requalification/revitalization of an area included in Naples historical town.

The theme of sustainability in the hospital design is today a subject widely discussed in the architectural field. The functioning of the health facility, also under the point of view of physical and organizational consistency is one of the primary objectives of the national government. There is the urgency to answer adequately and responsibly for the needs of society, assuring physical and psychological comfort and putting the center of the design process the individual sanitary needs. The social transformations and the technological progress in sanitary field have considerably modified the hospital conception. The hospital becomes space in which the individual is revalued for him itself and for the interaction with other individuals, with the environment, with the equipments and activities. From neutral envelope, aseptic and emarginating, the hospital space therefore becomes relation and meeting space. Factors not easily schematizeable contribute to defining of the quality of the space in terms of humanization. The attention towards the "affective" charge of users and operators, towards the complexity of their relationship: the atmosphere, the sensations which the space causes, the behaviours and the people's expectations. Starting from the hospital concept evolution and from the analysis of the implied problems in the programming and management also of the rules health, the paper synthetically intends to define the tipological and technological quality principles basic to the design process, aimed at an hospital architecture responsible and sustainable.
