This paper explores the potential role of the private sector, particularly the crop protection industry, in enhancing emergency pest prevention, preparedness and response (EPPPR) in relation to invasive pests. By leveraging their position and knowledge, private companies can contribute significantly to mitigating pest-related risks, enabling sustainable responses. We outline a comprehensive framework for EPPPR, covering prevention, preparedness, early detection, emergency response and integrated pest management, and we discuss how the private sector can contribute to this framework. We highlight the value that greater private sector involvement could bring to emergency pest prevention, preparedness and early pest detection through its on-the-ground networks and data-sharing capabilities with national plant protection organisations. Additionally, we stress the importance of robust and agile regulatory frameworks and policies for creating an enabling environment for the effective management of emergency pest outbreaks. We also emphasise the potential opportunities provided by private sector investment in research and development in driving innovation in pest management technologies. By fostering partnerships with governments, international organisations, local communities and other stakeholders, the private sector can play a vital role in building a resilient agricultural system capable of withstanding pest challenges. Lycorma delicatula, a globally invasive pest, has caused considerable economic losses in many countries. Determining the potential distribution range of L. delicatula is crucial for its effective management and control; however, our understanding of this species remains limited. In this study, Maxent model with occurrence records and environmental variables were fit first and then optimized by selecting the best combination of feature classes and regularization multipliers using the lowest score of corrected Akaike information criterion. Subsequently, we predicted global suitable areas for L. delicatula both currently and in the future (2041–2060, 2061–2080, and 2081–2100). The results indicated that the mean temperature of the driest quarter is the most important environmental variable limiting L. delicatula distribution. Currently, the suitable areas are concentrated in East Asia (mainly in China, South Korea, and Japan), central and eastern United States, and southern Europe. Compared with current environmental conditions, in all future climate scenarios, the number of suitable areas for L. delicatula increased. In addition, we revealed that suitable areas are likely to expand northward in the future. Our study results suggest that policymakers and governments should prioritize the development of pest management measures in suitable areas for L. delicatula, especially in high suitable areas, to control this invasive pest and minimize global economic losses. Caloptilia roscipennella (Hübner, 1796) is a leaf‐mining moth native to Central and Southern Europe. In this publication, we provide the first report of the occurrence of Caloptilia roscipennella in India. The identification was performed using an integrative approach, combining molecular (barcoding, COI) and morphological analysis (forewing pattern). In 2020, the larvae were initially found scraping in the silvery‐white mine and later feeding in folded or rolled leaves of the common walnut Juglans regia L. In the subsequent years, the species was found only in the same places. Two generations were recorded per year (May–June and August–September) and leaf miners overwintered as adults and reappeared in the early spring. Damage ranging from 15% to 20% was observed on the leaves of J. regia. Further efforts related to C. roscipennella should concentrate on evaluating its geographic distribution and its impact on walnut trees. Several species of parasitoids were reared from infested mines, with specimens belonging to the genus Chrysocharis Förster, 1856 (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) and Itoplectis maculator (Fabricius, 1775) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae). These species provided excellent control of leaf miner larvae, and out of 10 larvae, seven were found parasitized by the parasitoids and higher numbers of specimens were found with relative higher frequencies. BACKGROUND: In agricultural pest management, especially in combatting the invasive red imported fire ant (RIFA, Solenopsis invicta), significant challenges emerge as a consequence of the constraints of solely depending on chemical insecticides or entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs). The utilization of chemical insecticides carries environmental and ecological hazards, whereas EPNs, when applied independently, might not offer the immediate effectiveness necessary for adequate RIFA suppression. Acknowledging these hurdles, our study investigates a synergistic method that integrates EPNs with chemical insecticides, aiming to fulfill the urgent demand for more efficient and environmentally friendly pest control solutions. RESULTS: Our evaluation focused on the interaction between the highly pathogenic Steinernema riobrave 7–12 EPN strain and prevalent insecticides, specifically beta‐cypermethrin and a mixture of bifenthrin and clothianidin, applied at highly diluted recommended concentrations. The findings revealed a notable increase in RIFA mortality rates when EPNs and these insecticides were used together, outperforming the results achieved with each method individually. Remarkably, this enhanced efficacy was especially evident at lower concentrations of the bifenthrin–clothianidin mixture, indicating a valuable approach to minimizing reliance on chemical insecticides in agriculture. Furthermore, the high survival rates of EPNs alongside the tested insecticides indicate their compatibility and potential for sustained use in integrated pest management programs. CONCLUSION: Our research underscores the effectiveness of merging EPNs with chemical insecticides as a powerful and sustainable strategy for RIFA management. The tomato potato psyllid, Bactericera cockerelli Šulc, originating from North and Central America, poses a serious threat to Solanaceae crops in Australia. This study investigates the potential of the Australian native and commercially available green lacewing, Mallada signatus Schneider, as a biological control agent for B. cockerelli. The effect of feeding on B. cockerelli on the development rate and survival, of M. signatus were evaluated. Further, a greenhouse cage study was conducted to determine the optimal density of M. signatus larvae needed to effectively control an established B. cockerelli population. In our study, the third instar larvae of M. signatus consumed over 75 B. cockerelli nymphs in 24 h. Following the introduction of M. signatus larvae to caged tomato plants, eight M. signatus larvae per caged tomato plant decreased B. cockerelli population by 64% at the end of the sampling. These results indicated M. signatus, particularly at the larval stage, is an effective biological control option for B. cockerelli, especially in greenhouse tomato cultivation. This research offers valuable insights for the Australian horticultural industry, presenting a viable, eco‐friendly alternative to traditional, chemical pesticide‐reliant pest management strategies. Context: The black rat (Rattus rattus) is an invasive species found throughout much of the globe, including in many agricultural areas, where they cause significant damage to many crops including citrus. Understanding how black rats move in these orchards would substantially aid the development of management programs to combat this pest species. Aim: Our goal was to determine the home-range size and mean maximum distance moved over a 24-h period, as well as to determine the activity period for black rats in orchards. Methods: We used innovative cellular tracking technology to provide a more complete assessment of home-range size and maximum daily movements than previously reported in other investigations. We also used remote-triggered cameras to assess activity periods for black rats to better inform management actions. Key results: We observed large home ranges for black rats in citrus orchards ( x ¯ = 2.36 ha). Although mean home-range size did not differ between males and females, we did identify an effect of sex on the mean maximum daily distance moved by black rats (males: x ¯ = 201 m ; females: x ¯ = 148 m). Black rats were most active during the early evening, with all observations made during night-time. Conclusions: Black rats moved relatively large distances within orchards, with activity occurring exclusively at night. Implications: This information on black rat activity patterns will greatly assist in the development of management programs by informing ideal spacing between traps and bait stations to minimise cost, while still yielding efficacious results. A reliance on trapping or baiting during night-time would ensure access by black rats, while eliminating access to diurnal non-target species, although such actions would be labour-intensive and may be cost-prohibitive. A better understanding of activity patterns of damaging, invasive black rats would aid in the development of effective management strategies in agricultural systems. We provide information on black rat movements and activity patterns in citrus orchards on the basis of novel cellular tracking technology and remote-triggered camera data that highlight extensive nocturnal movements by black rats. This information will be used to inform distances between traps and bait stations to allow for more efficacious and cost-effective management programs in orchards. Fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a global pest causing damage to several crops. However, its management using chemical control is a challenge due to its capacity to evolve resistance to insecticides. After 6 generations of selection with lambda-cyhalothrin, the LC50 for the insecticide-resistant strain (Lambda-Sel) was 486 ppm, higher than that of the field strain (FAW-MUL) (7.5 ppm), susceptible laboratory strain (Lab-PK) (0.46 ppm), and laboratory unselected strain (UNSEL) (5.26 ppm). Laboratory selection with lambda-cyhalothrin increased resistance from 16.3- to 1056.52-fold and 1.43- to 92.4-fold to lambda-cyhalothrin compared to Lab-PK and UNSEL strains, respectively. The selected strain of S. frugiperda (Lambda-Sel) presented low cross-resistance to chlorpyrifos, moderate to deltamethrin and indoxacarb, very low to spinosad, and no cross-resistance to emamectin benzoate. The realized heritability (h 2) of lambda-cyhalothrin resistance in the Lambda-Sel strain was very high (0.88). The reciprocal cross progenies of F1 (Lambda-Sel ♀ × Lab-PK ♂), F1ʹ (Lambda-Sel ♂ × Lab-PK ♀), BC1 (F1 ♀ × Lambda-Sel ♂), and BC2 (F1 ♀ × Lab-PK ♂) showed high resistance ratios of 545.64-, 396.52-, 181.18-, and 146.54-fold, respectively compared to Lab-PK. The degree of dominance values for lambda-cyhalothrin in F1 and F1ʹ indicates incompletely dominant resistance. The difference between observed and expected mortality in backcross populations (BC1 and BC2) revealed a polygenic resistance. In conclusion, the resistance to lambda-cyhalothrin was autosomal, incompletely dominant, and polygenic. BACKGROUND: Biological invasions are a leading cause of reductions in global biodiversity. Islands are particularly sensitive to invasions, which often result in cascading impacts throughout island communities. Wild pigs (Sus scrofa) are globally invasive and pose threats to numerous taxa and ecosystems, particularly for islands where they have contributed to declines of many endemic species. However, the impacts of wild pig diet on the flora and fauna remain understudied in many island systems. RESULTS: We used DNA metabarcoding of wild pig fecal samples to quantify the seasonal diet composition of wild pigs on three barrier islands in the southeastern United States. Wild pigs exhibited a diverse diet dominated by plants, but also including marine and terrestrial animals. The diet composition of plants varied seasonally and between islands. Consumption of invertebrates also changed seasonally, with a shift to coastal invertebrates, particularly crabs, in spring and summer. Vertebrates were found in <10% of samples, but spanned broad taxa including amphibians, fish, mammals, and reptiles. Species consumed by wild pigs indicate that wild pigs use a variety of habitats within barrier islands for foraging, including maritime forests, saltmarshes, and beaches. CONCLUSIONS: An observed shift to beach foraging during sea turtle nesting season suggests wild pigs have potential to hinder nesting success on islands without established management programs. These findings provide insight into the diverse diets of wild pigs on barrier islands and highlight the need for removal of wild pigs from sensitive island ecosystems because of their potential impacts to native plant and animal communities. © 2024 The Authors. Spotted wing drosophila (SWD), Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae), is one of the most important pests of berry crops globally. Knowledge of the seasonal trend of SWD density in cultivated and noncultivated areas of blackberry, in relation to preference for wild fruits, can contribute to the development of effective management strategies. In this study, the seasonal trend of SWD was determined in cultivated blackberry (Rubus sp.) and noncultivated areas. Moreover, the preference of SWD for wild fruits growing in the blackberry producing region in Michoacán, Mexico, was determined from 2013 to 2015. Furthermore, to determine whether the wild and noncultivated plants in this region were hosts to SWD, choice and no-choice experiments were performed, using fruits, under laboratory conditions. The seasonal trend of SWD was not only influenced by wild plant species as alternate hosts, but also by cultural practices, such as the mowing down of blackberry plants and the vegetation surrounding the blackberry crop. In addition to cultivated blackberry, Psidium guajava, Rubus adenotrichos, Spondias mombin, and Prunus serotina var. capuli are reported as new hosts for SWD in the study region. Invasive pests may disturb and destructively reformat the local ecosystem. The small hive beetle (SHB), Aethina tumida, originated in Africa and has expanded to America, Australia, Europe, and Asia. A key factor facilitating its fast global expansion is its ability to subsist on diverse food inside and outside honey bee colonies. SHBs feed on various plant fruits and exudates in the environment while searching for bee hives. After sneaking into a bee hive, they switch their diet to honey, pollen, and bee larvae. How SHBs survive on such a broad range of food remains unclear. In this study, we simulated the outside and within hive stages by providing banana and hive resources and quantified the SHB associated microbes adjusted by the diet. We found that SHBs fed on bananas were colonized by microbes coding more carbohydrate-active enzymes and a higher alpha diversity than communities from SHBs feeding on hive products or those collected directly from bee hives. SHBs fed on bananas and those collected from the hive showed high symbiont variance, indicated by the beta diversity. Surprisingly, we found the honey bee core symbiont Snodgrassella alvi in the guts of SHBs collected in bee hives. To determine the role of S. alvi in SHB biology, we inoculated SHBs with a genetically tagged culture of S. alvi, showing that this symbiont is a likely transient of SHBs. In contrast, the fungus Kodamaea ohmeri is the primary commensal of SHBs. Diet-based microbiome shifts are likely to play a key role in the spread and success of SHBs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Native parasitoids are potential tools for the biological control of invasive exotic pests, such as the frugivorous flies spotted‐wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii Matsumura, and African fig fly, Zaprionus indianus Gupta (both Diptera: Drosophilidae). Following biological invasions, the establishment of exotic species may be restricted, among other things, by their susceptibility to native or established natural enemies. The Neotropical‐native pupal endoparasitoid Trichopria anastrephae Costa Lima (Hymenoptera: Diapriidae), although primarily associated with hosts of the genus Anastrepha (Tephritidae), has also been described to attack Drosophilidae. There are few studies on the interaction between parasitoids native to Argentina and D. suzukii and/or Z. indianus. The present work evaluates the parasitism of T. anastrephae on both species of drosophilids under controlled conditions. Ten larvae (L3) of each host species were exposed separately to a couple of adult T. anastrephae for 72 h (n = 10). For both control and parasitoid treatment, 10 larvae (L3) of D. suzukii and Z. indianus were placed in 10 flasks (repetition) at the L3 stage. Host emergence, the infestation degree index (DI), and the parasitism success rate (SP) were calculated. Drosophila suzukii and Z. indianus emergence differed significantly in controlled conditions being 41% higher for Z. indianus than for D. suzukii. The DI was 100% in D. suzukii and 38% in Z. indianus, and the SP was 48% both in D. suzukii and in Z. indianus. These findings indicate that the native parasitoid T. anastrephae has a high potential as a biocontrol strategy against D. suzukii. The phylogeography of invasive pests is fundamentally important for the reconstruction of invasion pathways. Infection patterns with maternally inherited endosymbionts such as Cardinium and Wolbachia may provide additional resolution power. Kelly's citrus thrips, Pezothrips kellyanus, a significant Australian-native pest of citrus, has independently colonised New Zealand and the Mediterranean region. However, the Australian source populations for these two invasive ranges are unknown. Furthermore, Australian populations have previously been found with Cardinium and Wolbachia coinfections. Surprisingly, invasive-range populations only had Cardinium but not Wolbachia, although both endosymbionts independently cause cytoplasmic incompatibility that facilitates the endosymbionts' spread in host populations. To resolve this puzzle, we examined mitochondrial diversity and endosymbiont prevalence in 59 P. kellyanus populations across the native and invasive ranges. We found that populations from Victoria in Australia were Wolbachia-free and shared mitochondrial haplotypes with invasive-range populations, suggesting they were the likely source of the founder populations in both invasive ranges. However, we also detected a linkage pattern between Wolbachia and particular haplotypes in Australia. Furthermore, populations with a high Wolbachia prevalence in eastern Australia had a substantially lower haplotype diversity than populations with low Wolbachia prevalence in other parts of Australia. This indicates a Wolbachia-driven selective sweep of mitochondria in the native range of this haplodiploid host due to maternal coinheritance. In contrast, Cardinium was associated with all haplotypes, demonstrating an older association with Cardinium than Wolbachia. Overall, while endosymbionts are informative for tracing pest invasions, the selective sweeps they cause can potentially confound phylogeographic patterns and invasion pathways. Fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, invaded India in 2018. Since then, this pest was considered as one of the serious threats to maize growers. A handful of management strategies have been developed to manage this pest. One such strategy is the application of sand mixed insecticides to leaf whorls. The present study evaluates the effect of different concentrations of sand mixed chlorantraniliprole applied to the maize whorl on the FAW reproductive biology. The sand mixed chlorantraniliprole at 0.4 ml/kg was significantly effective in inducing higher mortality, lower foliar consumption, lower pupal weight, fecundity and hatchability compared to the recommended foliar spray at 0.4 ml/L. Up to 14 days post-treatment, chlorantraniliprole mixed with sand (0.4 ml/kg) and foliar spray (0.4 ml/L) were equally effective in altering FAW fitness, whereas chlorantraniliprole mixed with sand (0.4 ml/kg) was continue to perform significantly better with a prolonged effect up to 30 days. Therefore, the whorl application of sand-mixed chlorantraniliprole at a dosage of 0.4 ml/kg can be used as an alternative delivery method of insecticide directly to the whorl instead of recommended and commonly practiced foliar spray. Simple Summary: Privets (Ligustrum spp.) are popular hedge shrubs that escape from gardens and cause negative impacts by invading forests in the United States. The narrow host specificity of the seed-feeding weevil, Ochyromera ligustri, suggests that this weevil could be considered a fortuitous biological control agent of privets. To find out the host range of this weevil, time-consuming experiments involving rearing and dissections are often conducted. Herein, we developed PCR primers to rapidly and accurately detect the presence of the weevil in privet fruits. We confirmed that the novel PCR primers specifically work for O. ligustri even with a small quantity of DNA, which was 0.01 ng. Using the newly developed PCR-based detection saves time and labor in research related to the detection and impact of this weevil. Ligustrum spp. (Oleaceae) have become invasive species in the US and negatively affect native plant diversity and richness in forests. Ochyromera ligustri (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is considered a potential biological control agent in the US because adults feed on the foliage and larvae are seed-feeders of Ligustrum spp. To discover the relationships between O. ligustri and Ligustrum spp., fruit dissections or rearing and field observations are required. In the current research project, novel PCR primers were developed to rapidly detect the DNA of O. ligustri in molecular analyses without rearing and observation. The developed PCR primers worked even with 0.01 ng of DNA and did not amplify the DNA of the other five curculionid species tested. When the novel primers were tested with three Ligustrum spp. species common in the southeastern US, the DNA of O. ligustri was detected from all three species. We expect that the novel primers will be utilized to find out the presence and impact of O. ligustri on Ligustrum spp rapidly and accurately. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The polyphagous shot hole borer (PSHB), Euwallacea fornicatus Eichhoff (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae), is a significant tree‐killing pest recently introduced into South Africa. Many native trees in urban settings are susceptible to infestation, but the presence of PSHB in natural ecosystems is unstudied. The presence and drivers of PSHB colonization in 1682 trees of 68 species were evaluated in 51 plots across a native Afrotemperate forest complex in South Africa. Breeding colonies of PSHB were found in six native species (breeding hosts). An additional 11 species did not contain PSHB colonies but hosted its mutualistic fungus Fusarium euwallaceae Freeman et al. (Hypocreales: Nectriaceae). Invasibility increased when plots were closer to the urban infestation border, further away from surface water, and when containing a larger number of breeding hosts. Invasibility decreased with an increase in tree species richness. Polyphagous shot hole borers were found in climax forest distant to urban areas at sites frequented by tourists. The severity of infestation of trees increased with an increase in host diameter, breeding host abundance, and infested tree abundance. Probability of infestation increased with an increase in the number of infested trees. Infested trees were not spatially clumped. Instead, PSHB preferentially selected eight of the 17 native host species. And the data suggest that larger trees of these species may be more susceptible to PSHB. Eight species were infested at random and two were infested seemingly accidentally. Infestations increased more rapidly on larger trees and on those surrounded by a high abundance of breeding hosts. This study confirms that Afrotemperate forests are highly susceptible to invasion by PSHB. Direct anthropogenic impact had no discernible effect on infestations, but humans aided spread of PSHB to distant sites. Halting movement of contaminated wood is important. Management of PSHB should focus on highly infested areas and trees as these increase the likelihood of further and more severe infestations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anoplophora glabripennis (Asian longhorn beetle, ALB) and Anoplophora chinensis (Citrus longhorn beetle, CLB) are native forest pests in China; they have become important international quarantine pests. They are found using the same Salix aureo‐pendula host tree of Cixi, Zhejiang province, China. On this host tree, we collected additional beetles that appeared to be morphologically intermediate between ALB and CLB. By using a stereoscope, we observed that there were several bumps on the base of the elytra, which was inconsistent with ALB, which typically has a smooth elytral base, but was more like CLB, which has numerous short tubercles on the elytral base. Given their sympatry and intermediate morphology, we hypothesized that these may represent ALB × CLB hybrids. We studied the genomic profiles for 46 samples (ALB, CLB, and putative hybrids) using genotyping‐by‐sequencing (GBS) providing a reduced representation of the entire genome. Employing principal component analyses on the 163 GBS‐derived single nucleotide polymorphism data, we found putative hybrids tightly clustered with ALB, but genetically distinct from the CLB individuals. Therefore, our initial hybrid hypothesis was not supported by genomic data. Further, while mating experiments between adult ALB and CLB were successful in 4 separate years (2017, 2018, 2020, and 2021), and oviposition behavior was observed, no progeny was produced. Having employed population genomic analysis and biological hybridization experiments, we conclude that the putative hybrids represent newly discovered morphological variants within ALB. Our approach further confirmed the advantage of genome‐wide information for Anoplophora species assignment in certain ambiguous classification cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study focuses on the first detection in Europe of a parasitoid Eretmocerus sp. gr. serius (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) on the Orange Spiny Whitefly, Aleurocanthus spiniferus (Quaintance) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae). Through extensive field surveys, this study investigates the occurrence of the aphelinid in several regions across central and southern Italy. Different sites were monitored to investigate the Eretmocerus sp. gr. serius parasitization rate on A. spiniferus, shedding light on its potential as a biological control agent against the invasive whitefly pest. This is the first record of Exorista deligata (Pandellé, 1896) (Diptera: Tachinidae) as a parasitoid of Hyposidra talaca (Walker, 1860) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) from India. H. talaca is a major and new emerging defoliator of the Tea plant Camellia sinensis (L) Kuntze (Theaceae). It completes multiple generations per year without diapause on C. sinensis, resulting in heavy crop loss. The field-collected larvae/pupa of H. talaca were checked for parasitoid infestations and reared until either the host or parasitoid emerged. The parasitoid was identified as E. deligata with morphological characteristics and confirmed by the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit-I (COX-CO1) gene sequencing technique. The parasitoid is infrequent with unexplored parasitic biology. It parasitises the larva and completes its lifecycle inside the developing H. talaca by entirely devouring the host. The mean percent parasitisation caused by E. deligata studied herein was 25.4% (range 5.88%-57.69%). Based on its parasitisation ability, we suggest the species could be a potential biological control agent to address the damage mitigation caused by the tea looper pest, H. talaca. Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) is an invasive species that causes great damages to many stone and small fruits, resulting in reduced fruit production and high economic losses. The concern about this pest has led to the research of a wide range of possible control methods. However, the main control strategies are still based in insecticide applications. The efficacy of different insect growth regulators (IGRs), which have better ecotoxicological profile than conventional pesticides, was evaluated to test their feasibility for the control of this pest. When adult flies fed for three days on artificial diet surface-treated with lufenuron, cyromazine or pyriproxyfen, no adult offspring developed. However, adult offspring production progressively recovered when flies were transferred to non-treated diet. When adult flies fed continuously for 19 days on surface-treated artificial diet, lufenuron, cyromazine and pyriproxyfen completely suppressed the production of viable offspring while azadirachtin and tebufenozide reduced offspring production by more than a half compared to the untreated control. Nevertheless, these were transient non-permanent effects since viable offspring was produced shortly after females fed on treated diet were transferred to non-treated diet. The results observed in additional choice and egg-transfer assays indicate a vertical transmission of lufenuron and cyromazine from treated females to their offspring whereas the effect of pyriproxyfen seems to be related to the feeding of larvae on treated diet, although effects on reproductive processes cannot be discarded. In this research, we aimed to investigate the role of a C-type lectin, RfCTL27, in the immune response of RPWs. RT-qPCR showed that Escherichia coli induced a significant increase in the expression of RfCTL27 in the gut and fat body. After RfCTL27 was silenced, the expression level of antimicrobial peptide (AMP) genes in the gut and fat body was significantly decreased. Therefore, our findings indicate that RfCTL27 is involved in both systemic and gut local immunity by controlling the expression of AMP genes upon the exposure of Gram-negative bacteria. Red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier), is a palm tree insect pest that causes significant damage in the many countries from the Indian sub-continent and southeast Asia into date palm-growing countries of Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean Basin. This study is aimed at determining the role of a C-type lectin, RfCTL27, in the immune defense of RPW larvae. RfCTL27 is a secreted protein that possesses a QPD motif, being integral for the discrimination of Gram-negative bacteria. The abundance of RfCTL27 transcripts in the gut and fat body was significantly higher than that in other tissues. Six hours after injection of Escherichia coli, the expression level of RfCTL27 in the gut of RPW larvae was significantly elevated compared with other groups. At 12 h after injection of E. coli, the expression of RfCTL27 in fat body was dramatically induced in contrast with other treatments. More interestingly, the ability of RPW larvae to clear the pathogenic bacteria in the body cavity and gut was markedly impaired by the silencing of RfCTL27. Additionally, the expression levels of two antimicrobial peptide genes, RfCecropin in the gut and RfDefensin in fat body of RPW larvae, were significantly decreased. Taken together, these data suggested that RfCTL27 can recognize the Gram-negative bacterium and activate the expression of antimicrobial peptides to remove the invaded bacterial pathogens. Simple Summary: Microbial pest control offers promising opportunities to develop sustainable alternatives to synthetic chemical insecticides. In Brazil, the selection of native strains of entomopathogenic fungi suggests an option for South American palm weevil (Rhynchophorus palmarum, SAPW) management and potential tools for red palm weevil (R. ferrugineus, RPW) management. Both weevils in America are susceptible to the native isolates of Beauveria bassiana, CVAD01, CVAD02, CVAD06, and CPATC/032, which originate from palm orchard soils and infected SAPW adults in northwestern Brazil's Alagoas state. The SAPW mortality rates in our study were 90 and 100% on day 21, suggesting the efficacy of these strains that are well-adapted to the environment and to the pest. We suggest both the development of formulates for microbiological insecticides against R. palmarum and future tests on R. ferrugineus. Both palm weevils, the South American (Rhynchophorus palmarum) (SAPW) and the red palm weevil (R. ferrugineus, RPW), are present in South America, affecting commercial, ornamental, and native palms. These pests oviposit and thrive on selected Arecaceae. R. palmarum mainly infests coconut (Cocos nucifera), oil palms (Elaeis guineensis), and other ornamental and native palms in America, causing a significant social impact on growers. The weevils fulfill a significant ectosymbiotic macro- and microorganism role in the first period of larval development, worsening the damage which, during this period, is not yet apparent. Palm protection in the Brazilian context suggests the use of indigenous agents for microbiological biocontrol. This research identifies three Brazilian Beauveria bassiana isolates: CVAD01, CVAD02, and CVAD06. The results suggest that the strain's impact on R. palmarum can also be compared with that of the commercial strain Beauveria bassiana. Phylogenetic analysis allowed the delimitation of species of Beauveria (Hypocreales). Pathogenicity tests caused significant mortality in R. palmarum. The isolates CVAD01, CVAD02, and CVADO6 showed high pathogenicity between 7 and 21 days, with mortality rates between 90 and 100%, suggesting that they may be effective biological control agents of R. palmarum in the field when used, within available means, to mitigate the impact of R. palmarum and R. ferrugineus in South America. Simple Summary: The papaya mealybug, Paracoccus marginatus, is an invasive pest species found all over the world. It is native to Mexico and Central America. It can now be found in more than 50 countries and regions, seriously threatening the safety of the agricultural and forestry industries. In the current study, the potential global distribution regions of P. marginatus were predicted under current and future climatic conditions using MaxEnt. The results suggested that the highly suitable areas were mainly present in tropical and subtropical regions, including South America, southern North America, Central America, Central Africa, Australia, and South and Southeast Asia. Under four climate scenarios (SSP126, SSP245, SSP370, and SSP585) in the 2050s and 2070s, the total suitable areas will change very little. In addition, the results showed that the min temperature of coldest month (bio6) was the most important factor influencing the distribution of P. marginatus, accounting for 46.8% of all contributions. Overall, the current study can provide a reference framework for the future control and management of papaya mealybug and other invasive insect species. The results also showed that the three variables with the greatest impact on the model were min temperature of coldest month (bio6), precipitation of wettest month (bio13), and precipitation of coldest quarter (bio19), with corresponding contributions of 46.8%, 31.1%, and 13.1%, respectively. The results indicated that the highly suitable areas were mainly located in tropical and subtropical regions, including South America, southern North America, Central America, Central Africa, Australia, the Indian subcontinent, and Southeast Asia. Under four climate scenarios in the 2050s and 2070s, the area of suitability will change very little. Moreover, the results showed that the area of suitable areas in 2070s increased under all four climate scenarios compared to the current climate. In contrast, the area of suitable habitat increases from the current to the 2050s under the SSP370 and SSP585 climate scenarios. Damage potential of maize fall army worm (FAW), varies from 9.0 % to 62.5 % on different seasons and in different regions of India. FAW threatens food and nutritional security of millions of farmers in India. Here is the first record of FAW in a new host barnyard millet and a study on its biology. The infestation began from seedling stage and extended till reproductive stage. During seedling stage, the larva caused scrapping of leaf and cut the central shoot, resulted in drying of central shoot, which resembled dead heart symptom. In vegetative stage, it caused scrapping and defoliation of leaves and also caused whorl damage. There were no parallel hole symptoms observed as like maize. The egg duration was 2.8± 0.83 days. Larva usually had six instars with life period of 3.2± 0.83 Days, 3.0± 0.70 Days, 2.4± 0.54 Days, 2.6± 0.54 Days, 3.4± 0.89 Days and 6.0± 0.70 Days for I to VI instars respectively. The total larval duration ranged from 17 to 23 days with a mean of 20.6± 2.07 days. Pupal and adult duration were 8.8± 1.30 and 10.2± 2.04 Days respectively. The tomato potato psyllid, Bactericera cockerelli, is an invasive pest in Australia, which can cause severe economic loss in the production of Solanaceous crops. As an invasive pest, B. cockerelli may also modify biotic interactions in Australian agricultural and native ecosystems. Resident generalist predators in an area may have the ability to utilize invasive pest species as prey but this will depend on their specific predatory behavior. The extent to which generalist predators learn from their previous dietary experience (i.e., whether they have used a particular species as prey before) and how this impacts subsequent prey choice will influence predator and prey population dynamics after invasion. In this study, one nonnative resident ladybird, Hippodamia variegata, and one native ladybird, Coccinella transversalis, were investigated. Dietary experience with B. cockerelli as a prey species significantly increased preference for the psyllid in a short term (6 h) Petri dish study where a choice of prey was given. Greater suppression of B. cockerelli populations by experienced ladybirds was also observed on glasshouse grown tomato plants. This was presumably due to altered prey recognition by experience. The result of this study suggest the potential to improve the impact of biological control agents on invasive pests by providing early life experience consuming the target species. Dispersal is a multifactorial process which may influence, among several others, population dynamics, inbreeding likelihood, and mate competition. For species that disperse by flight, many studies have suggested that life‐history traits, such as body size or nutritional condition, could promote variation in flight capabilities and, consequently, on dispersal behavior. Eusocial hymenopterans are likely to experience high densities of related reproductive individuals near their nests, thus increasing probabilities of inbred matings and kin competition. Spatial segregation resulting from differences in flight capabilities of Vespula germanica (Fabricius) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) nestmate drones could reduce interactions with kin, thus decrease inbreeding and kin competition. Our aim was to characterize, in the laboratory, flight capabilities of sibling drones and elucidate traits that could affect it, focusing on the relevance of carbohydrate intake (diets with different sugar concentration) during early adulthood. Our results indicate that in tethered flight mill assays, V. germanica drones have highly variable flight capabilities within and between nests, with most drones likely to remain relatively close to their nest of origin. The observed flight capabilities are affected by nutrition, with those individuals better nurtured (i.e., with higher nutritional index), flying farther distances. Additionally, diets with variable carbohydrate concentration provided during early adulthood did not affect flight capabilities (only those exposed to a carbohydrate‐free diet had reduced flight distances and speeds), suggesting that nutrition during larval stages is determinant for flight. Our findings contribute to the understanding of the mechanisms underlying V. germanica drone dispersal behavior which, in turn, might influence inbreeding likelihood in the species. The tomato leaf miner Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is an invasive pest that produces significant damage to tomato crops in Senegal. Biological control is one of the options for its control and a large number of natural enemies have been reported in association with the pest. A five-year field survey was conducted in the main tomato-producing area in Senegal (Niayes) to evaluate the parasitoid complex of T. absoluta in tomato crops. Seven parasitoid species were obtained including Apanteles litae, Chelonus sp., Cotesia vestalis and Meteorus laphygmarum belonging to Braconidae family; Diadegma insulare, Pristomerus pallidus (Ichneumonidae) and Elasmus sp. (Eulophidae). The parasitoid Chelonus sp. was largely the most dominant (60.67%). Larval parasitism was very low (1.05%) but greater during the last years of the study (2016 to 2019). Results showed that parasitism was not affected by time of season. However, diversity of parasitoids was variable across year (p < 0.001). Bark and ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) are receiving increasing scientific interest because of the economic losses that they can cause in invaded areas. Nonetheless, there are a number of emerging pest species, belonging to different tribes, for which invasions have likely been overlooked in the past due to their inconspicuousness, taxonomic confusion and/or misidentification. In the summer of 2022, severe infestations by a bark beetle species belonging to the tribe Cryphalini were observed on mango (Mangifera indica L.) in Eastern Sicily (Italy). No information about bark beetle attacks on mango trees in Europe was available previously. However, the occurrence of a cryphaline bark beetle species causing rapid common fig tree (Ficus carica L.) dieback was reported for the same investigated area in 2014 and 2015. We aimed to identify the bark beetle species attacking mango and common figs, and to describe the fungal pathogens vectored by this beetle species. Our results revealed that the bark beetle species attacking mango and fig trees in the studied area is Cryphalus dilutus Eichhoff and that different fungal pathogens, i.e., species of Botryosphaeriaceae, Ceratocystis ficicola and Neocosmospora spp., are vectored by this beetle species. Transparent, light green, and purple sticky sheets and multifunnel traps were compared in field experiments in Hungary. Light green and transparent sticky traps caught more L. festiva and A. sinuatus jewel beetles than non-sticky multifunnel traps, regardless of the larger size of the colored surface of the funnel traps. Although light green sticky sheets turned out to be optimal for both species, using transparent sheets can reduce catches of non-target insects. The key to the effectiveness of sticky traps may lie in the behavioral responses of the beetles to the optical features of the traps. As walnut trees (Juglans spp.) are of high economic importance, considerable attention has been given to invasive pests of these trees in Europe. In 2016, Dryocoetes himalayensis Strohmeyer, 1908, an alien bark beetle originating from the Himalayas region of India, already present in several European countries, was confirmed to have attacked walnut trees in the Czech Republic. Within the present study, we (i) surveyed the current distribution of D. himalayensis in the Czech Republic, (ii) examined D. himalayensis phenology by rearing it in trap logs, and (iii) investigated tree level habitat preferences of the species in two study stands with 180 black walnut (Juglans nigra L.) trees and 66 common walnut (Juglans regia L.) trees sampled. The present study documented the species to be relatively widespread in some warmer lowland regions of the Czech Republic (42 localities found) and to reach high abundance locally. Almost 15 thousand D. himalayensis individuals reared from the trap logs showed the species emerging throughout the whole vegetation period with a distinctive peak in June. Even though the species is able to develop in thin stems (diameter <5 cm), it is most numerous in thicker trunk bases and also preferably attacks trees of higher diameters. The species preferred common walnut trees (its native host) with decreased vitality. In contrast, black walnut trees (North American species) were attacked regardless of their vitality, but the vitality of occupied trees successively decreased. Based on our results, D. himalayensis should be assumed as a considerable pest of walnut trees (particularly black walnuts), which might become of significant importance in its European invasive range in the future, and thus substantial attention should be given to it. Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood, 1837) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is an important arthropod pest of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) throughout American continents. However, the historical events associated with its dispersion are poorly understood. In this study, we employed a phylogeographic approach to investigate the origin and demographic history of P. guildinii in Brazil. We analyzed the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and Cytb gene sequences of P. guildinii individuals collected in Brazil's 5 soybean production macro-regions and cross-referenced this information with sequences available in public databases. Our findings support an older Caribbean basin establishment for the current genealogical strains of P. guildinii , with subsequent dispersion to Brazil around 0.97 Mya. No secondary dispersion of this species from the Caribbean region to soybean areas in Brazil was identified. The Brazilian populations of P. guildinii are genetically structured across the country's soybean macro-regions and show strong signals of continuous demographic and spatial expansion in Brazil, which may be accelerated by the soybean cropping landscape in the country. The populations from the northern region (MR5) are older than the Central and South populations. The signs of demographic expansion indicate that P. guildinii populations are increasing their effective size in soybean regions, which could reflect its importance as a soybean pest in the coming years. BACKGROUND: Maize production in Africa is hindered by a myriad of biotic challenges, key among them being invasive and native lepidopteran stemborers. Recent invasion of the continent by fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, has further exacerbated the situation. Fortunately, Cotesia icipe was found to be very promising against S. frugiperda. However, the co‐occurrence and interaction between S. frugiperda and the stemborers (Busseola fusca, Sesamia calamistis, and Chilo partellus) in maize agroecosystem may jeopardize the efficiency of C. icipe as a biocontrol agent of S. frugiperda. This study investigated the performance of C. icipe on S. frugiperda, Spodoptera littoralis and the stemborers. Specifically, the preference and acceptability of C. icipe to the host insects, the physiological suitability of the hosts for its development, and the effect of these hosts on the fitness parameters of the offspring were assessed. RESULTS: Cotesia icipe accepted all the tested hosts, albeit with higher preference for Spodoptera species than for stemborers under multiple‐choice tests. Also, the highest parasitism of up to 97% was recorded on S. frugiperda compared with parasitism on the stemborers of 43% in B. fusca. Moreover, physiological suitability and fitness traits (except for per cent female offspring) varied with host species, again being optimal on Spodoptera species. CONCLUSION: Cotesia icipe demonstrated strong potential to control S. frugiperda in maize due to its high affinity for parasitization and developmental success in this host; and despite its non‐specific parasitization, the presence of other hosts may not prevent its maximum control of S. frugiperda. © 2023 The Authors. A laboratory study was carried out to assess the residual toxicity of certain insecticides to egg parasitoids of Spodoptera frugiperda (J E Smith), Trichogramma chilonis Ishii, T. pretiosum Riley (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), and Telenomus remus Nixon (Hymenoptera: Scelioniadae). The median lethal concentrations were recorded at 24 and 48 hr after exposure period to adults of egg parasitoids to nine insecticides. Among the tested spinetoram was found to be "dangerous", however, chlorantraniliprole, chlorantraniliprole + lambdacyhalothrin, chlorpyriphos + cypermethrin, indoxacarb, cyantraniliprole, emamectin benzoate, thiamethoxam + lambdacyhalothrin and azadirachtin were found to be "slightly to moderately toxic" to T. chilonis and T. pretiosum. Chlorantraniliprole, emamectin benzoate, indoxacarb and spinetoram were found to be "dangerous", however, chlorpyriphos + cypermethrin, thiamethoxam + lambdacyhalothrin, chlorantraniliprole + lambdacyhalothrin, cyantraniliprole and azadirachtin were "slightly to moderately toxic" to T. remus. Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) is a cosmopolitan invader and one of the most serious pests of tomato. This pest has expanded rapidly in China since it initially invaded Xinjiang in the northwest in 2017 and Yunnan in the south in early 2018. More complete knowledge of the migration patterns and genetic structure of this pest is important for implementing effective management strategies. To fill this knowledge gap, the COI gene of T. absoluta was sequenced based on nationwide routine monitoring. This study showed a new invasion into Gansu and Inner Mongolia, indicating ongoing expansion of this pest. Most populations of T. absoluta, both in China and worldwide, have high genetic homogeneity. Nevertheless, some degree of genetic variability was found in populations in southern China, especially in Yunnan. Two distinct haplogroups were distinguished, and clade A was predominant at the global level. The high level of sequence divergence indicated the possible existence of cryptic species. Furthermore, FST and analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) revealed weak but significant differentiation between the Xinjiang northwestern group and southern group/subgroups and provides compelling evidence of the different dispersal avenues of T. absoluta in northwestern and southern China. T. absoluta likely established bridgehead populations in Yunnan and then spread rapidly throughout this province and neighboring territories in southern China. Knowledge regarding genetic diversity, population structure and dispersal pattern is valuable for improving management guidelines for this pest. As one of the most important invasive and destructive pests in the world, the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) reduces crop yield and causes economic loss. It is critical to find an appropriate controlling approach. This study aimed to determine the insecticidal activities of botanical insecticides (30% tea saponin, 0.6% matrine and a mixture thereof) on fall armyworm larvae, as well as the effects of sublethal concentrations of an optimal ratio of the mixture, on the survival rate, developmental duration, pupation rate, emergence rate, and body weight of fall armyworm. In addition, we evaluated the control effect of the insecticides (30% tea saponin, 0.6% matrine, optimal ratio of mixture along with 0.3% azadirachtin and 36% chlorfenapyr) and toxicity to natural enemies in field conditions. The results showed that all botanical insecticides and mixtures were toxic, and the insecticidal bioactivity of 10:1 volume ratio mixture was the highest at 96 hours, with a median lethal concentration (LC50) of 56.561 mg/mL. Meanwhile, the sublethal concentration of a 10:1 volume ratio of the mixture significantly affected the survival rate, prolonged developmental duration and reduced emergence rates and pupal weights, but it did not affect the pupation rates of fall armyworm. Furthermore, it has harmless or slightly harmful effects on natural enemies. Our study provides a novel environmentally friendly and natural enemy-friendly approach to controlling fall armyworms. The red imported fire ant (RIFA), Solenopsis invicta, is an invasive pest that causes damage to agricultural and ecological environments worldwide. Fluralaner is a new isoxazoline pesticide with the potential to become a control agent against RIFA. However, it is not clear whether S. invicta responds the same way to fluralaner at different reproductive stages. The present study firstly evaluated the toxicity of fluralaner to S. invicta at different developmental stages, finding that fourth instar larvae (LD50, 1744.23 mg/kg) and worker ants (LD50, 8.62 mg/kg) were differently susceptible to fluralaner, while the mortality rate of fourth instar larvae was significantly lower at the same concentration of 10 mg/L (5.56 ± 3.14%) than that of worker ants (62.22 ± 3.14%), demonstrating a greater tolerance to fluralaner. Subsequently, the metabolic responses of worker and larval ants to fluralaner stress (10 mg/L) were investigated using non-targeted metabolomics, which indicated that the amount of differential metabolites and the KEGG metabolic pathways enriched were different between workers and larvae when exposed to the same dose (10 mg/L) of fluralaner. Differential metabolites of larvae and worker ants under fluralaner stress were mainly concentrated in organic acids and their derivatives, lipids and lipid-like molecules, nucleosides, nucleotides, and analogues, combined with the enriched metabolic pathways, revealed that the differential metabolic responses of larvae and worker ants were mainly in energy metabolism, detoxification metabolism, and neurotransmitter ligands. Workers consumed more substrates in the arginine synthesis pathway (l-glutamic acid, l-aspartic acid, and fumaric acid) to provide energy for the detoxification (glutathione) of pesticides when exposed to fluralaner stress, and the high accumulation of l-aspartic acid induced excitotoxicity in the worker ants. Larval ants consumed more arachidonic acid to synthesize PG D2, and changes in the metabolism of antioxidants such as catechins, hesperidin, and l-ascorbic acid suggested that larvae were more capable of scavenging the ROS response than worker ants. The results of non-targeted metabolomics successfully revealed differences in the sensitivity of larvae and workers to fluralaner agents, providing insights into the fluralaner control of Solenopsis invicta. Controlling the invasive fruit pest, Drosophila suzukii, relies on a range of complimentary pest management approaches. However, increasing external costs (e.g., labour, exclusion mesh and fuel), are limiting the ability to control the pest via non-chemical means. Extant UK parasitoids could be exploited for the suppression of D. suzukii populations, but there is currently a lack of knowledge of the UK species utilising D. suzukii as a host or their lifecycle requirements. Between 2017 and 2020, we identified parasitoids developing in D. suzukii, in Southeast England. Sentinel traps, containing laboratory reared D. suzukii larvae/pupae in fruit, were deployed within the vicinity of commercial crops and semi-natural areas. Six generalist parasitoid species were recovered from D. suzukii sentinel traps. These included two species of larval parasitoids (Leptopilina heterotoma Thomson (Hymenoptera: Figitidae) and Asobara tabida (Nees) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and four pupal parasitoids (Pachycrepoideus vindemiae (Rondani) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), Spalangia erythromera (Forster) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), Trichopria modesta (Ratzeburg, 1848) and T. prema Nixon (both Hymenoptera: Diapriidae)). The performance of the first four species as D. suzukii parasitoids was further tested in the laboratory and then in the field to assess rates of parasitism. Pachycrepoideus vindemiae was the most abundant species recovered from field collections and had in increasing rate of population rate in the laboratory. Other species were not successful at parasitising D. suzukii. In the field, adult D. suzukii emergence from sentinel traps was reduced by ~ 21% where parasitoids could access D. suzukii larvae and pupae. Parasitoids of D. suzukii are understudied in the UK, and this research indicates where future efforts could be made in understanding the interaction between host and parasitoid and the opportunities to exploit extant parasitoids for the control of D. suzukii. Background: Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) in an aqueous suspension treatment showed potential in the biocontrol of the red imported fire ant Solenopsis invicta, whereas colony relocation following this inundative application had restricted overall effectiveness. As a novel strategy, EPN pre‐infected insect cadavers carrying the next generation of nematode‐infective juveniles (IJs) might be used to efficiently manage insect pests. However, this strategy has not been tested on S. invicta. This study evaluated EPNs emerging from wax moth Galleria mellonella cadavers to facilitate infection of S. invicta compared to those used in aqueous suspensions. Results: Among seven EPN species, Steinernema riobrave and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora had the highest insecticidal efficiency in aqueous treatment. Cadavers of G. mellonella colonized by either one of two EPN species were not damaged by worker ants, ensuring that the IJs could develop within and emerge successfully from the cadavers. Likewise, compared to an aqueous suspension treatment with an equivalent number of IJs, treatment with an S. riobrave‐infected cadaver increased the mortality of S. invicta by ≈10%, whereas infection by H. bacteriophora did not differ between treatments. However, the coexistence of S. riobrave‐ and H. bacteriophora‐infected cadavers adversely affected the control of S. invicta, likely as a result of competition resulting from the increased dispersal of each emerging EPN species. Conclusion: Using EPN‐infected G. mellonella cadavers as a strategy increased the mortality of S. invicta in the laboratory. Abstract Climate change and biological invasions of insect pests are interlinked global concerns that drive shifts in the distribution of invasive insects. The peach fruit fly, Bactrocera zonata Saunders, is one of the most economically important Tephritidae species that attack several host plants and causes serious damage in Asia and Africa. Currently, B. zonata is absent from many countries and regions but has a risk of invasion. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the impact of climate change on the global potential distribution of B. zonata. In this study, we used MaxEnt and CLIMEX models to estimate the risk area for B. zonata under near current and future climate conditions. The MaxEnt and CLIMEX results showed that the south of North and Central America was suitable for B. zonata. The European countries were slightly suitable for B. zonata. In Asia, the highly suitable regions of B. zonata included Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Iran, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos. Moreover, China, Philippines, Indonesia, and Japan showed highly climate suitability for B. zonata. The climate suitability of B. zonata was increasingly high in the projection under climate change. The result of the two models showed that the climatic suitability for B. zonata will increase under climate change in China. Taken together, these predictive results support the quarantine of B. zonata for high-risk countries and provide in-depth information on how climatic changes may affect its possible geographic range.

Abstract Fall Armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), native to the Americas, is a polyphagous insect pest feeding on more than 350 plant species. We studied the developmental and demographic parameters of the maize (Zea mays) strain of FAW on rice (Oryza sativa), and compared the results with its prime host, maize. The developmental period from egg to adult among rice varieties did not differ significantly; however, it did differ significantly between rice and maize, as feeding on rice rather than maize extends development duration of FAW larvae by 15.15%. FAW larvae collected and reared on maize were found to be of significantly higher weight than those reared on rice at two sequential dates of their development; pupal weight however was observed as statistically similar between these two host crops. Regardless of the host, female adults always emerged before males; in maize, female FAW appeared 3.36 days earlier than males. Females derived from rice had longer pre-oviposition periods and shorter oviposition ones than those derived from maize. In rice and maize, the age-specific fecundity rate (mx) peaked at 40 days and 33 days, respectively. When the Fall Armyworm consumed maize instead of rice, there was an increase in the reproduction rate (R 0), the intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m ), and the finite rate of increase (λ). For instance, when FAW fed on rice, the rm value was 0.121, whereas it rose to 0.173 when FAW fed on maize. Feeding on rice instead of maize resulted in significantly longer mean length of generation (t G ) and doubling time (t D ) for the fall armyworm (FAW). This suggests that it took a longer time for the FAW population to double when it was fed rice under controlled greenhouse conditions. In summary, our research suggests that FAW can survive and complete its life cycle on rice plants and on multiple varieties of rice in Bangladesh. However, field verification is necessary before drawing strong conclusions as to the risk posed by FAW in rice. This requires additional studies of FAW and associated insect community dynamics under non-controlled conditions and in the context of multi-species interactions in Asian rice fields.

This article discusses the presence of natural enemies and entomopathogens on the invasive pest Spodoptera frugiperda (fall armyworm) in the maize ecosystem in the Indian subcontinent. The study found that natural enemies like parasitoids and predators, including Telenomus sp., Trichogramma sp., Glyptapanteles creatonoti, and Campoletis chlorideae, were present and could be used as bioagents for fall armyworm control. The cypress bark beetle, Phloeosinus aubei (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Scolytinae) prefers to build breeding galleries in decaying host trees. However, volatile cues specific to decaying or actively infested trees have not yet been reported. Any such information would be useful for the management of this invasive, wood-boring species that has become established across Europe in the temperate zone and is now a key pest of ornamental Cupressaceae in nurseries and urban landscapes. Our objective was to reveal key components in host volatiles specific to stressed trees, which could be potential signals for the pest of its suitability for colonisation. Volatile profiles of arborvitae, Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd' suffering from either dehydration or fresh infestation of P. aubei was collected and compared to that samples from healthy control trees. Analyses of volatiles by gas chromatography coupled to an electroantennographic detector revealed substantial differences between healthy, dehydrated and infested trees. Structural elucidation of the major antennally active components revealed that both α-pinene and α-thujene were prevalent in the volatiles of infested trees, whilst α-thujone was the major component in volatiles of healthy trees. In volatiles collected from trunks housing fresh P. aubei female nuptial chambers, sharp increases of β-pinene, myrcene, limonene, and p-cymene were noticed, alongside trace amounts of camphene and fenchene. Volatiles collected from fresh frass showed a similar profile, but with a somewhat smaller amount of limonene. Fenchone was present in each type of volatiles, however, only in low amounts. Further studies should be directed to reveal the behavioural role of these components, which could be helpful in developing kairomone-based techniques for monitoring the flight of the pest in stands of scale-leafed trees. The brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is an invasive species currently established in several non-native regions, where it causes severe economic losses for growers. The factors driving H. halys spread are, however, poorly understood. Here, we studied H. halys populations in Apulia region (southern Italy), where the pest is present but not established. We monitored pest occurrence in different habitats selected along a gradient of urban cover in the landscape, and measured the potential biological control by natural enemies. Finally, to identify the potential pathways of entry in the region, we carried out a preliminary genetic characterization of Apulian populations. We found that high proportions of urban habitats in the landscape generally supported a higher occurrence and abundance of H. halys in crop fields, whereas high cover of semi-natural habitats increased parasitism rate. A higher predation rate was observed in crop fields compared to urban areas. The parasitoids Anastatus bifasciatus and Ooencyrtus sp., important control agents in areas where the pest is already established, were the most common species observed. Our findings suggest that the agricultural matrix affects the occurrence and the biological control of H. halys in newly invaded areas, potentially influencing its establishment probability. Finally, the high gentic similarity with the northern Italian populations suggested continuous introduction events, probably from the northern part of the country. The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is becoming a serious invasive insect pest in Asia, Africa, and Oceania due to its broad spectrum of host plants and long flight distances. In response to the increasing risk of insecticide resistance, there is a growing need to develop more effective pest management options. One such option involves the use of synergists, which are substances that, while inert on their own, can enhance the toxicity of other insecticides when combined. In the present study, spent hop from a beer-brewing process was tested to evaluate the synergistic effect on conventional chemical insecticides. Among the five insecticidal compounds frequently used for controlling the fall army worm, spent hop oil and its major constituent, β-myrcene, enhanced the toxicity of deltamethrin, emamectin benzoate, and spinetoram, displaying synergistic interactions in the topical application and injection assays. Electrophysiological studies showed that the neurological responses in the larval CNS were significantly boosted in all three synergistic combinations compared to the individual applications of the insecticides. The remaining ones which did not show any synergistic toxicity in the bioassays also failed to display any neuronal change. β-Myrcene did not show any inhibitory activity on the major detoxifying enzymes of the larval extract. These two observations imply a new and novel neurological synergistic mechanism compared to the traditional synergists. Moreover, β-myrcene also displayed spatial repellency in the larvae of the fall armyworm, which may potentiate multiple usefulness of the spent hop oil for controlling this pest.
