Abstract

Correction: Chemical Senses, Volume 46, 2021, bjab050, https://doi.org/10.1093/chemse/bjab050 Published: 08 December 2021 Recent anecdotal and scientific reports have provided evidence of a link between COVID-19 and chemosensory impairments, such as anosmia. However, these reports have downplayed or failed to distinguish potential effects on taste, ignored chemesthesis, and generally lacked quantitative measurements. Here, we report the development, implementation, and initial results of a multilingual, international questionnaire to assess self-reported quantity and quality of perception in 3 distinct chemosensory modalities (smell, taste, and chemesthesis) before and during COVID-19. In the first 11 days after questionnaire launch, 4039 participants (2913 women, 1118 men, and 8 others, aged 19-79) reported a COVID-19 diagnosis either via laboratory tests or clinical assessment. Importantly, smell, taste, and chemesthetic function were each significantly reduced compared to their status before the disease. Difference scores (maximum possible change +/- 100) revealed a mean reduction of smell (-79.7 +/- 28.7, mean +/- standard deviation), taste (-69.0 +/- 32.6), and chemesthetic (-37.3 +/- 36.2) function during COVID-19. Qualitative changes in olfactory ability (parosmia and phantosmia) were relatively rare and correlated with smell loss. Importantly, perceived nasal obstruction did not account for smell loss. Furthermore, chemosensory impairments were similar between participants in the laboratory test and clinical assessment groups. These results show that COVID-19-associated chemosensory impairment is not limited to smell but also affects taste and chemesthesis.The multimodal impact of COVID-19 and the lack of perceived nasal obstruction suggest that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus strain 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection may disrupt sensory-neural mechanisms.

Abstract

An open neighbourhood locating-dominating set is a set S of vertices of a graph G such that each vertex of G has a neighbour in S , and for any two vertices u , v of G , there is at least one vertex in S that is a neighbour of exactly one of u and v . We characterize those graphs whose only open neighbourhood locating-dominating set is the whole set of vertices. More precisely, we prove that these graphs are exactly the graphs for which all connected components are half-graphs (a half-graph is a special bipartite graph with both parts of the same size, where each part can be ordered so that the open neighbourhoods of consecutive vertices differ by exactly one vertex). This corrects a wrong characterization from the literature.

Abstract

BackgroundCOVID-19 has heterogeneous manifestations, though one of the most common symptoms is a sudden loss of smell (anosmia or hyposmia). We investigated whether olfactory loss is a reliable predictor of COVID-19.MethodsThis preregistered, cross-sectional study used a crowdsourced questionnaire in 23 languages to assess symptoms in individuals self-reporting recent respiratory illness. We quantified changes in chemosensory abilities during the course of the respiratory illness using 0-100 visual analog scales (VAS) for participants reporting a positive (C19+; n=4148) or negative (C19-; n=546) COVID-19 laboratory test outcome. Logistic regression models identified singular and cumulative predictors of COVID-19 status and post-COVID-19 olfactory recovery.ResultsBoth C19+ and C19-groups exhibited smell loss, but it was significantly larger in C19+ participants (mean±SD, C19+: -82.5±27.2 points; C19-: -59.8±37.7). Smell loss during illness was the best predictor of COVID-19 in both single and cumulative feature models (ROC AUC=0.72), with additional features providing negligible model improvement. VAS ratings of smell loss were more predictive than binary chemosensory yes/no-questions or other cardinal symptoms, such as fever or cough. Olfactory recovery within 40 days was reported for ∼50% of participants and was best predicted by time since illness onset.ConclusionsAs smell loss is the best predictor of COVID-19, we developed the ODoR-19 tool, a 0-10 scale to screen for recent olfactory loss. Abstract

International audience; Viewing the generated packets of an application as the words of a language, automata learning can be used to derive the behavioral packet-based model of applications. The alphabets of the learned automata, manually defined in terms of packets, may cause overfitting. As some packets always appear together, we apply machine learning techniques to automatically define the alphabet set based on the timing and statistical features of packets. Using the learned automata models, the classifier should detect the accepted words of the models in the input. To improve this time-consuming process, we present a framework, called NeTLang, that identifies the application model in terms of k-testable languages. The classification problem is reduced to observing only $$\varTheta (k)$$ symbols from the input with the help of machine learning techniques. Our framework utilizes the two diverse automata learning and machine learning techniques to build on their strengths (to be fast and accurate) and to eliminate their weaknesses (i.e., ignoring temporal relations among packets). According to our results, NeTLang outperforms the state-of-the-art methods using each technique alone.

Abstract

This paper considers the task of matching images and sentences by learning a visual-textual embedding space for cross-modal retrieval. Finding such a space is a challenging task since the features and representations of text and image are not comparable. In this work, we introduce an end-to-end deep multimodal convolutional-recurrent network for learning both vision and language representations simultaneously to infer image-text similarity. The model learns which pairs are a match (positive) and which ones are a mismatch (negative) using a hinge-based triplet ranking. To learn about the joint representations, we leverage our newly extracted collection of tweets from Twitter. The main characteristic of our dataset is that the images and tweets are not standardized the same as the benchmarks. Furthermore, there can be a higher semantic correlation between the pictures and tweets contrary to benchmarks in which the descriptions are well-organized. Experimental results on MS-COCO benchmark dataset show that our model outperforms certain methods presented previously and has competitive performance compared to the state-of-the-art. Abstract

Nowadays, automobile manufacturers make efforts to develop ways to make cars fully safe. Monitoring driver’s actions by computer vision techniques to detect driving mistakes in real-time and then planning for autonomous driving to avoid vehicle collisions is one of the most important issues that has been investigated in the machine vision and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The main goal of this study is to prevent accidents caused by fatigue, drowsiness, and driver distraction. To avoid these incidents, this paper proposes an integrated safety system that continuously monitors the driver’s attention and vehicle surroundings, and finally decides whether the actual steering control status is safe or not. For this purpose, we equipped an ordinary car called FARAZ with a vision system consisting of four mounted cameras along with a universal car tool for communicating with surrounding factory-installed sensors and other car systems, and sending commands to actuators. The proposed system leverages a scene understanding pipeline using deep convolutional encoder-decoder networks and a driver state detection pipeline. We have been identifying and assessing domestic capabilities for the development of technologies specifically of the ordinary vehicles in order to manufacture smart cars and eke providing an intelligent system to increase safety and to assist the driver in various conditions/situations. Abstract

With practice, humans may improve their performance in a task by either optimizing a known strategy or discovering a novel, potentially more fruitful strategy. How does the brain support these two fundamental abilities? In the present experiment, subjects performed a simple perceptual decision-making task. They could either use and progressively optimize an instructed strategy based on stimulus position, or spontaneously devise and then use a new strategy based on stimulus color. We investigated how local and long-range BOLD coherence behave during these two types of strategy learning by applying a recently developed unsupervised fMRI analysis technique that was specifically designed to probe the presence of transient correlations. Converging evidence showed that the posterior portion of the default network, i.e. the precuneus and the angular gyrus bilaterally, has a central role in the optimization of the current strategy: these regions encoded the relevant spatial information, increased the level of local coherence and the strength of connectivity with other relevant regions in the brain (e.g. visual cortex, dorsal attention network). This increase was proportional to the task optimization achieved by subjects, as measured by the reduction of reaction times, and was transiently disrupted when subjects were forced to change strategy. By contrast, the anterior portion of the default network (i.e. medial prefrontal cortex) together with rostral portion of the fronto-parietal network showed an increase in local coherence and connectivity only in subjects that would at some point spontaneously choose the new strategy. Overall, our findings shed light on the dynamic interactions between regions related with attention and with cognitive control, underlying the balance between strategy exploration and exploitation. Results suggest that the default network, far from being “shut-down” during task performance, has a pivotal role in the background exploration and monitoring of potential alternative courses of action.

Abstract

Contains fulltext : 228204.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) In a preregistered, cross-sectional study we investigated whether olfactory loss is a reliable predictor of COVID-19 using a crowdsourced questionnaire in 23 languages to assess symptoms in individuals self-reporting recent respiratory illness. We quantified changes in chemosensory abilities during the course of the respiratory illness using 0-100 visual analog scales (VAS) for participants reporting a positive (C19+; n=4148) or negative (C19-; n=546) COVID-19 laboratory test outcome. Logistic regression models identified univariate and multivariate predictors of COVID-19 status and post-COVID-19 olfactory recovery. Both C19+ and C19- groups exhibited smell loss, but it was significantly larger in C19+ participants (mean±SD, C19+: -82.5±27.2 points; C19-: -59.8±37.7). Smell loss during illness was the best predictor of COVID-19 in both univariate and multivariate models (ROC AUC=0.72). Additional variables provide negligible model improvement. VAS ratings of smell loss were more predictive than binary chemosensory yes/no-questions or other cardinal symptoms (e.g., fever). Olfactory recovery within 40 days of respiratory symptom onset was reported for ~50% of participants and was best predicted by time since respiratory symptom onset. We find that quantified smell loss is the best predictor of COVID-19 amongst those with symptoms of respiratory illness. To aid clinicians and contact tracers in identifying individuals with a high likelihood of having COVID-19, we propose a novel 0-10 scale to screen for recent olfactory loss, the ODoR-19. Abstract

A dominating set is a set S of vertices in a graph such that every vertex not in S is adjacent to a vertex in S. In this paper, we consider the set of all optimal (i.e. smallest) dominating sets S, and ask of the existence of at least one such set S with given constraints. The constraints say that the number of neighbors in S of a vertex inside S must be in a given set ρ, and the number of neighbors of a vertex outside S must be in a given set σ. For example, if ρ is [ 1 , k ] , and σ is the nonnegative integers, this corresponds to “ [ 1 , k ] -domination.” First, we consider the complexity of recognizing whether an optimal dominating set with given constraints exists or not. We show via two different reductions that this problem is NP-hard for certain given constraints. This, in particular, answers a question of [M. Chellali et al., [ 1 , 2 ] -dominating sets in graphs, Discrete Applied Mathematics 161 (2013) 2885–2893] regarding the constraint that the number of neighbors in the set be upper-bounded by 2. We also consider the corresponding question regarding “total” dominating sets. Next, we consider some well-structured classes of graphs, including permutation and interval graphs (and their subfamilies), and determine exactly the smallest k such that for all graphs in that family an optimal dominating set exists where every vertex is dominated at most k times. We also consider the problem for trees (with implications for chordal and comparability graphs) and graphs with bounded “asteroidal number”.

Abstract

International audience; We present results from a search for strong H 2 absorption systems proximate to quasars (z abs ≈ z em) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 14. The search is based on the Lyman-Werner band signature of damped H 2 absorption lines without any prior on the associated metal or neutral hydrogen content. This has resulted in the detection of 81 systems with N(H 2) ∼ 10 19 −10 20 cm −2 located within a few thousand km s −1 from the quasar. Compared to a control sample of intervening systems, this implies an excess of proximate H 2 systems by about a factor of 4 to 5. The incidence of H 2 systems increases steeply with decreasing relative velocity, reaching an order of magnitude higher than expected from intervening statistics at ∆v < 1000 km s −1. The most striking feature of the proximate systems compared to the intervening ones is the presence of Ly−α emission in the core of the associated damped H i absorption line in about half of the sample. This puts constraints on the relative projected sizes of the absorbing clouds to those of the quasar line emitting regions. Using the SDSS spectra, we estimate the H i, metal and dust content of the systems, which are found to have typical metallicities of one tenth Solar, albeit with a large spread among individual systems. We observe trends between the fraction of leaking Ly−α emission and the relative absorber-quasar velocity as well as with the excitation of several metal species, similar to what has been seen in metal-selected proximate DLAs. With the help of theoretical H i-H 2 transition relations, we show that the presence of H 2 helps to break the degeneracy between density and strength of the UV field as main sources of excitation and hence provides unique constraints on the possible origin and location of the absorbing clouds. We suggest that most of these systems originate from galaxies in the quasar group, although a small fraction of them could be located in the quasar host as well. We conclude that follow-up observations are still required to investigate the chemical and physical conditions in individual clouds and to assess the importance of AGN feedback for the formation and survival of H 2 clouds.

Abstract

We study a sample of 17 z>1.5 absorbers selected based on the presence of strong CI absorption lines in SDSS spectra and observed with the ESO-VLT spectrograph X-shooter. We derive metallicities, depletion onto dust, and extinction by dust, and analyse the absorption from MgII, MgI, CaII and NaI that are redshifted into the near infrared wavelength range. We show that most of these CI absorbers have high metallicity and dust content. We detect nine CaII absorptions with $W$(CaII$\lambda$3934) >0.23 \AA out of 14 systems where we have appropriate wavelength coverage. The observed equivalent widths are similar to what has been measured in other lower redshift surveys of CaII systems. We detect ten NaI absorptions in the 11 systems where we could observe this absorption. The median equivalent width ($W$(NaI$\lambda$5891) = 0.68 \AA) is larger than what is observed in local clouds with similar HI column densities but also in z 2.5 \AA and six of them have log N(HI) < 20.3, with the extreme case of J1341+1852 that has log N(HI) = 18.18. The MgII absorptions are spread over more than $\Delta v$ $\sim$ 400 km s$^{-1}$ for half of the systems; three absorbers have $\Delta v$ > 500 km s$^{-1}$. The kinematics are strongly perturbed for most of these systems, which probably do not arise in quiet disks and must be close to regions with intense star-formation activity and/or are part of interacting objects. Abstract

We present the results of our automatic search for proximate damped Ly$\alpha$ absorption (PDLA) systems in the quasar spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12. We constrain our search to those PDLAs lying within 1500 km s$^{-1}$ from the quasar to make sure that the broad DLA absorption trough masks most of the strong Ly$\alpha$ emission from the broad line region (BLR) of the quasar. When the Ly$\alpha$ emission from the BLR is blocked by these so-called eclipsing DLAs, narrow Ly$\alpha$ emission from the host galaxy could be revealed as a narrow emission line (NEL) in the DLA trough. We define a statistical sample of 399 eclipsing DLAs with log$N$(HI)$\ge$21.10. We divide our statistical sample into three subsamples based on the strength of the NEL detected in the DLA trough. By studying the stacked spectra of these subsamples, we found that absorption from high ionization species are stronger in DLAs with stronger NEL in their absorption core. Moreover, absorption from the excited states of species like SiII are also stronger in DLAs with stronger NEL. We also found no correlation between the luminosity of the Ly$\alpha$ NEL and the quasar luminosity. These observations are consistent with a scenario in which the DLAs with stronger NEL are denser and physically closer to the quasar. We propose that these eclipsing DLAs could be the product of the interaction between infalling and outflowing gas. International audience; Quantum Boolean (1 + 1) digits 1/2-adders are designed with 3 qubits for the quantum computing (Qubits) and 4 quantum states for the quantum Hamiltonian computing (QHC) approaches. Detailed analytical solutions are provided to analyse the time operation of those different 1/2-adder gates. QHC is more robust to noise than Qubits and requires about the same amount of energy for running its 1/2-adder logical operations. QHC is faster in time than Qubits but its logical output measurement takes longer.

Abstract

We present a detailed analysis of a H$_2$-rich, extremely strong intervening Damped Ly-$��$ Absorption system (DLA) at $z_{\rm abs}=2.786$ towards the quasar J$\,$0843+0221, observed with the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope. The total column density of molecular (resp. atomic) hydrogen is $\log N$(H$_2$)=$21.21\pm0.02$ (resp. $\log N$(H$\,$I)=$21.82\pm0.11$), making it to be the first case in quasar absorption lines studies with H$_2$ column density as high as what is seen in $^{13}$CO-selected clouds in the Milky-Way. We find that this system has one of the lowest metallicity detected among H$_2$-bearing DLAs, with $\rm [Zn/H]=-1.52^{+0.08}_{-0.10}$. This can be the reason for the marked differences compared to systems with similar H$_2$ column densities in the local Universe: $(i)$ the kinetic temperature, $T\sim$120~K, derived from the $J=0,1$ H$_2$ rotational levels is at least twice higher than expected; $(ii)$ there is little dust extinction with A$_V < 0.1$; $(iii)$ no CO molecules are detected, putting a constraint on the $X_{\rm CO}$ factor $X_{\rm CO}> 2\times 10^{23} $ cm$^{-2}$/(km/s\,K), in the very low metallicity gas. Low CO and high H$_2$ contents indicate that this system represents "CO-dark/faint" gas. We investigate the physical conditions in the H$_2$-bearing gas using the fine-structure levels of C$\,$I, C$\,$II, Si$\,$II and the rotational levels of HD and H$_2$. We find the number density to be about $n \sim 260-380\,$cm$^{-3}$, implying a high thermal pressure of $(3-5) \times 10^4\,$cm$^{-3}\,$K. We further identify a trend of increasing pressure with increasing total hydrogen column density. This independently supports the suggestion that extremely strong DLAs (with $\log\,$N(H) $\sim 22$) probe high-z galaxies at low impact parameters., 21 pages, 21 figures. Abstract

We define a lepton-based asymmetry in semi-leptonic ttbar production at the LHC. We show that the ratio of this lepton-based asymmetry and the ttbar charge asymmetry, measured as a function of the lepton transverse momentum or the ttbar invariant mass is a robust observable in the Standard Model. It is stable against higher order corrections and mis-modeling effects. We show that this ratio can also be a powerful discriminant among different new physics models and between them and the Standard Model. Finally, we show that a related ratio defined at the Tevatron is also robust as a function of the ttbar invariant mass., 20 pages

We perform detailed computations of Lie algebras of infinitesimal CR-automorphisms associated to three specific model real analytic CR-generic submanifolds in C^9 by employing differential algebra computer tools -- mostly within the Maple package DifferentialAlgebra -- in order to automate the handling of the arising highly complex linear systems of pde's. Before treating these new examples which prolong previous works of Beloshapka, of Shananina and of Mamai, we provide general formulas for the explicitation of the concerned pde systems that are valid in arbitrary codimension k >= 1 and in any CR dimension n >= 1. Also, we show how Ritt's reduction algorithm can be adapted to the case under interest, where the concerned pde systems admit so-called complex conjugations., 28 pages

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we present a fast method to extract the sources related to interictal epileptiform state. The method is based on general eigenvalue decomposition using two correlation matrices during: 1) periods including interictal epileptiform discharges (IED) as a reference activation model and 2) periods excluding IEDs or abnormal physiological signals as background activity. After extracting the most similar sources to the reference or IED state, IED regions are estimated by using multiobjective optimization. The method is evaluated using both realistic simulated data and actual intracerebral electroencephalography recordings of patients suffering from focal epilepsy. These patients are seizure-free after the resective surgery. Quantitative comparisons of the proposed IED regions with the visually inspected ictal onset zones by the epileptologist and another method of identification of IED regions reveal good performance.

Abstract

The wrapping equilibria of one and two adsorbing cylinders are studied along a semi-flexible filament (polymer) due to the interplay between elastic rigidity and short-range adhesive energy between the cylinder and the filament. We show that statistical mechanics of the system can be solved exactly using a path integral formalism which gives access to the full effect of thermal fluctuations, going thus beyond the usual Gaussian approximations which take into account only the contributions from the minimal energy configuration and small fluctuations about this minimal energy solution. We obtain the free energy of the wrapping-unwrapping transition of the filament around the cylinders as well as the effective interaction between two wrapped cylinders due to thermal fluctuations of the elastic filament. A change of entropy due to wrapping of the filament around the adsorbing cylinders as they move closer together is identified as an additional source of interactions between them. Such entropic wrapping effects should be distinguished from the usual entropic configuration effects in semi-flexible polymers. Our results may be applicable to the problem of adsorption of proteins as well as synthetic nano-particles on semi-flexible polymers such as DNA., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

Polarizable randomly charged dielectric objects have been recently shown to exhibit long-range lateral and normal interaction forces even when they are effectively net neutral. These forces stem from an interplay between the quenched statistics of random charges and the induced dielectric image charges. This type of interaction has recently been evoked to interpret measurements of Casimir forces in vacuo, where a precise analysis of such disorder-induced effects appears to be necessary. Here we consider the torque acting on a randomly charged dielectric surface (or a sphere) mounted on a central axle next to another randomly charged surface and show that although the resultant mean torque is zero, its sample-to-sample fluctuation exhibits a long-range behavior with the separation distance between the juxtaposed surfaces and that, in particular, its root-mean-square value scales with the total area of the surfaces. Therefore, the disorder-induced torque between two randomly charged surfaces is expected to be much more pronounced than the disorder-induced lateral force and may provide an effective way to determine possible disorder effects in experiments, in a manner that is independent of the usual normal force measurement., 7 pages, 3 figs
