Abstract: Joint International Ocean Discovery Program and International Continental Scientific Drilling Program Expedition 364 drilled into the peak ring of the Chicxulub impact crater. We present P-wave velocity, density, and porosity measurements from Hole M0077A that reveal unusual physical properties of the peak-ring rocks. Across the boundary between post-impact sedimentary rock and suevite (impact melt-bearing breccia) we measure a sharp decrease in velocity and density, and an increase in porosity. Velocity, density, and porosity values for the suevite are 2900–3700 m/s, 2.06–2.37 g/cm3, and 20–35%, respectively. The thin (25 m) impact melt rock unit below the suevite has velocity measurements of 3650–4350 m/s, density measurements of 2.26–2.37 g/cm3, and porosity measurements of 19–22%. We associate the low velocity, low density, and high porosity of suevite and impact melt rock with rapid emplacement, hydrothermal alteration products, and observations of pore space, vugs, and vesicles. The uplifted granitic peak ring materials have values of 4000–4200 m/s, 2.39–2.44 g/cm3, and 8–13% for velocity, density, and porosity, respectively; these values differ significantly from typical unaltered granite which has higher velocity and density, and lower porosity. The majority of Hole M0077A peak-ring velocity, density, and porosity measurements indicate considerable rock damage, and are consistent with numerical model predictions for peak-ring formation where the lithologies present within the peak ring represent some of the most shocked and damaged rocks in an impact basin. We integrate our results with previous seismic datasets to map the suevite near the borehole. We map suevite below the Paleogene sedimentary rock in the annular trough, on the peak ring, and in the central basin, implying that, post impact, suevite covered the entire floor of the impact basin. Suevite thickness is 100–165 m on the top of the peak ring but 200 m in the central basin, suggesting that suevite flowed downslope from the collapsing central uplift during and after peak-ring formation, accumulating preferentially within the central basin.

Abstract: 9 pages; International audience; Potentially hazardous asteroids and comets have hit Earth throughout its history, with catastrophic consequences in the case of the Chicxulub impact. Here we reexamine one of the mechanisms that allow an impact to have a global effect—the release of climate-active gases from sedimentary rocks. We use the SOVA hydrocode and model ejected materials for a sufficient time after impact to quantify the volume of gases that reach high enough altitudes (> 25 km) to have global consequences. We vary impact angle, sediment thickness and porosity, water depth, and shock pressure for devolatilization and present the results in a dimensionless form so that the released gases can be estimated for any impact into a sedimentary target. Using new constraints on the Chicxulub impact angle and target composition, we estimate that 325 ± 130 Gt of sulfur and 425 ± 160 Gt CO2 were ejected and produced severe changes to the global climate.

Abstract: International audience; Bimetallic gold–platinum nanoparticles have been widely studied in the fields of nanoalloys, catalysis and plasmonics. Many preparation methods can lead to the formation of these bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs), and the structure and related properties of the nanoalloy often depend on the preparation method used. Here we investigate the ability of thermal dimethylformamide (DMF) reduction to prepare bimetallic gold–platinum sub-nm clusters supported on titania. We find that deposition of Pt preferentially occurs on gold. Formation of sub-nm clusters (vs. NPs) appears to be dependent on the metal concentration used: clusters can be obtained for metal loadings up to 4 wt% but 7–8 nm NPs are formed for metal loadings above 8 wt%, as shown using high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows electron-rich Au and Pt components in a pure metallic form and significant platinum enrichment of the surface, which increases with increasing Pt/Au ratio and suggests the presence of Au@Pt core–shell type structures. By contrast, titania-supported bimetallic particles (typically >7 nm) obtained by sodium borohydride (NaBH4) reduction in DMF, contain Au/Pt Janus-type objects in addition to oxidized forms of Pt as evidenced by HRTEM, which is in agreement with the lower Pt surface enrichment found by XPS. Both types of supported nanostructures contain a gold–platinum interface, as shown by the chemical interface damping, i.e. gold plasmon damping by Pt, found using UV-visible spectroscopy. Evaluation of the materials for plasmon-induced continuous flow CO2 reduction with water, shows that: (1) subnanometer metallic clusters are not suitable for CO2 reduction with water, producing hydrogen from the competing water reduction instead, thereby highlighting the plasmonic nature of the reaction; (2) the highest methane production rates are obtained for the highest Pt enrichments of the surface, i.e. the core–shell-like structures achieved by the thermal DMF reduction method; (3) selectivity towards CO2 reduction vs. the competing water reduction is enhanced by loading of the plasmonic NPs, i.e. coverage of the titania semi-conductor by plasmonic NPs. Full selectivity is achieved for loadings above 6 wt%, regardless of the NPs composition and alloy structure.

Abstract: International audience; Rhodium-catalysed hydroformylation, effective tool in bulk and fine-chemical synthesis, predominantly uses soluble metal complexes. For that reason, the metal leaching and the catalyst recycling are still the major drawbacks of this process. Single-atom catalysts have emerged as a powerful tool to combine the advantages of both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. Since using an appropriate support material is key to create stable, finely dispersed, single-atom catalysts, here we show that Rh atoms anchored on graphitic carbon nitride are robust catalysts for the hydroformylation reaction of styrene.

Abstract: The Chicxulub impact crater, known for its link to the demise of the dinosaurs, also provides an opportunity to study rocks from a large impact structure. Large impact craters have “peak rings” that define a complex crater morphology. Morgan et al. looked at rocks from a drilling expedition through the peak rings of the Chicxulub impact crater (see the Perspective by Barton). The drill cores have features consistent with a model that postulates that a single over-heightened central peak collapsed into the multiple-peak-ring structure. The validity of this model has implications for far-ranging subjects, from how giant impacts alter the climate on Earth to the morphology of crater-dominated planetary surfaces.Science, this issue p. 878; see also p. 836Large impacts provide a mechanism for resurfacing planets through mixing near-surface rocks with deeper material. Central peaks are formed from the dynamic uplift of rocks during crater formation. As crater size increases, central peaks transition to peak rings. Without samples, debate surrounds the mechanics of peak-ring formation and their depth of origin. Chicxulub is the only known impact structure on Earth with an unequivocal peak ring, but it is buried and only accessible through drilling. Expedition 364 sampled the Chicxulub peak ring, which we found was formed from uplifted, fractured, shocked, felsic basement rocks. The peak-ring rocks are cross-cut by dikes and shear zones and have an unusually low density and seismic velocity. Large impacts therefore generate vertical fluxes and increase porosity in planetary crust.

Abstract: The objective of this thesis is to improve the photo-response of well-known photocatalytic material such as TiO2, which is usually only active in the UV range. The basic idea is to assemble several approaches within one device to improve the photocatalytic properties: fabrication of periodically-organised TiO2 nanostructures and their assembly with plasmonic nanoparticles. Two fabrication strategies were investigated for these purposes. The first approach consists of selective vapour phase growth. The second approach implements the use of an AAO template. In parallel, TiO2 films deposited by ALD and assembled with plasmonic gold nanoparticles are investigated. The photocatalytic measurements on various TiO2 architectures were performed in both irradiation ranges UV and Vis. A new fabrication approach of mesoporous H-TiO2 films was developed giving promising results of photocatalytic efficiency improvement in both UV and Visible ranges.; L’objective est d’améliorer l’activité photocatalytique de TiO2 sous irradiations UV et Visible. Pour contourner les limites de TiO2 intrinsèque nous envisageons une fabrication de nanocomposite plasmonique à base de nanofils de TiO2 périodiquement organisés et assemblés avec des nanoparticules plasmoniques. Pour la fabrication des nanofils de TiO2 mécaniquement stables, deux approches ont été réalisées. La première approche est basée sur la croissance sélective en phase vapeur, la deuxième approche consiste en l’utilisation d’un moule de membranes AAO et d’un dépôt de films conformes par ALD. En parallèle les films de TiO2déposés par ALD sont assemblés avec les nanoparticules plasmoniques d’or. Les différentes architectures de TiO2 sont valorisées par des tests photocatalytiques (UV et Visible) sur les polluants modèles. Une nouvelle approche de la fabrication des films mesoporeux d’H-TiO2 avec efficacité photocatalytique à la fois sous irradiation UV et Visible est développée.

Abstract: International audience; This article describes the synthesis, spectroscopic studies, and theoretical calculations of nine original fluorophores based on the 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)benzazole (HBX) scaffold, functionalized at the 4-position of the phenol ring by ethynyl-extended aniline moieties. HBX dyes are well-known to display an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process, owing to a strong six-membered hydrogen bond in their structure that allows for an enol/keto tautomerism after photoexcitation. Appropriate electronic substitution can perturb the ESIPT process, leading to dual fluorescence, both excited tautomers emitting at specific wavelengths. In the examples described herein, it is demonstrated that the proton transfer can be finely frustrated by a modification of the constitutive heteroring, leading to a single emission band from the excited enol or keto tautomer or a dual emission with relative intensities highly dependent on the environment. Moreover, the nature of the functionalization of the N-alkylated aniline moiety also has a significant importance on the relative excited-state stabilities of the two tautomers in solution. To shed more light on these features, quantum chemical calculations by the density functional theory are used to determine the excited-state energies and rationalize the experimental spectroscopic data.

Abstract: International audience; The development of nanocomposite supramolecular hydrogels, which can be activated by local or external stimuli (pH, redox, enzyme, heat), is highly promising for various applications including implantable materials for antitumor or tissue engineering applications. Here, we show that large pore stellate mesoporous silica modified with isobutyramide grafts allow >100% wt. loading of enzymes, which ensures through the enzyme-assisted self-assembly an easy, rapid, and efficient way to design smart thermoresponsive nanocomposite supramolecular hydrogels. The typical temperature increase (42 °C), which may be induced by hyperthermia anticancer treatments, leads to the controlled-release of doxorubicin encapsulated in the resulting peptide self-assembled material.

Abstract: International audience; A full 3D analysis of the hierarchical porosity in Coscinodiscus sp. diatom structures was carried out by using a multiscale approach that combines three advanced volumetric imaging techniques with resolutions and fields of view covering all the porous characteristics of such complex architectures: electron tomography, "slice and view" approach that uses a dual-beam microscope (FIB-SEM), and array tomography consisting of serial imaging of ultrathin specimen sections. This multiscale approach allowed the whole porosity network to be quantified and provided an unprecedented structural insight into these natural nanostructured materials with internal organization ranging from micrometer to nanometer. The analysed species is made of several nested layers with different pore sizes, shapes and connectivities and characterized by the presence of interconnected pores structured in various ways. The first evidence of the presence of a nanometric porosity made of ellipsoidal pores in the siliceous diatom frustules is also provided.

Abstract: International audience; We report the influence of positional isomerism on the electronic (electrochemical HOMO/LUMO energy levels), photophysical and physical properties (molecular organization, crystallinity and phase transitions) and charge transport properties of dispiroacridine-indacenobisthiophene positional isomers. The isomers differ from the central indacenobisthiophene (IDT) core, which displays either para or meta linkages. We show that the spiro-connected phenylacridine bridges have a significant influence on all these properties and particularly on the charge transport mobility values, which were found to be higher in the meta isomer than in the para isomer. This finding is different to what was reported in the literature for the other couples of IDT-based isomers and shows the key role played by the spiro-connected fragments in these molecular systems.

Abstract: International audience; The control of cell fate assisted by synthetic drug-delivering materials is still a challenging task for spatiotemporal regulation of bioactive molecules in native tissues. In this study, the potential of faujasite type (FAU) zeolites for delivering bioactive ions (i.e. Ca 2+ and Mg 2+) to pre-osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells is unveiled. Zeolites are porous aluminosilicates with a large surface area suitable for the storage of biologically active compounds. However, only a few studies have reported the use of zeolites in tissue engineering; therefore, this study aims to correlate the release profile of zeolites with the resulting cell functions. The textural properties of zeolites were assessed via MEB, BET, XRF, and EDX analyses. This study shows that either Mg-loaded (Mg-Y) or Ca-loaded (Ca-Y) zeolites are able to gradually release ions over up to three weeks in classical culture media in contrast to the burst release profiles often described in the literature. The ion concentration can be adjusted simply through the mass of zeolite added in the system and was quantified by colorimetric methods and capillary electrophoresis. Three zeolite concentrations were tested (i.e. 1, 1.5, and 3 wt%) for both ion types in order to span biologically relevant ranges (from 5.6 to 19.6 mM). The cell responses against various ionic strengths were evaluated not only by the reduction of resazurin assay for viability/proliferation assessment, but also through immunostainings and collagen secretions (Picrosirius red staining). The cell proliferation was found to be proportional to the Ca 2+ concentration whereas an upper limit seemed to have been reached for Mg 3% compared to Mg 1% and Mg 1.5%. Matrix secretions were delayed under conditions exposed to Ca 2+ relative to Mg 2+ after 7 days, but this trend reversed after 21 days. Overall, this study emphasizes the potential role of FAU as a simple, low cost, biocompatible, and versatile way to modulate the functions of MC3T3-E1 cells through ion delivery over up to three weeks. The ion concentration is correlated with the zeolite concentration, and the payload could be easily handled. Thus, this study will make it possible to broaden the applications of zeolites in tissue engineering which can also be implemented in multiple ways including surface coatings and nanocarriers.

Abstract: The projected increase of civil aviation activity, the degradation of air quality and the location of Beirut Airport embedded in a very urbanized area, in addition to the special geography and topography surrounding the airport which plays a significant role in drawing emissions to larger distances, demanded anassessment of the spatial impact of the airport activities on the air quality of Beirut and its suburbs. This is the first study in the Middle East region that model pollutant concentrations resulting from an international airport's activities using an advanced atmospheric dispersion modelling system in a country with no data. This followed validation campaigns showing very strong correlations (r = 0.85) at validation sites as close as possible to emission sources. The modelling results showed extremely high NO2 concentrations within the airport vicinity, i.e., up to 110 μg∙m-3 (which is greater than the World Health Organization annual guidelines) posing a health hazard to the workers in the ramp. The major contribution of Beirut–Rafic Hariri International Airport to the degradation of air quality was in the airport vicinity; however, it extended to Beirut and its suburbs in addition to affecting the seashore area due to emissions along the aircraft trajectory; this isan aspect rarely considered in previous studies. On the other hand, elevated volatile organic compound levels were observed near the fuel tanks and at the aerodrome center. This study provides (ⅰ) a methodology to assess pollutant concentrations resulting from airport emissions through the use of an advanced dispersion model in a country with no data; and (ⅱ) a tool for policy makers to better understand the contribution of the airport's operations to national pollutant emissions, which is vital for mitigation strategies and health impact assessments.

Abstract: International audience; 2-Methyltetrahydrofuran (MTHF) is considered as one of the most promising green fuel alternatives that could be obtained from renewable lignocellulosic biomass through the catalytic hydrogenation of the γ-valerolactone (GVL) platform molecule. In the current work, we report on the ability of earth-abundant non-noble metal Co catalysts supported on TiO2 to be used efficiently for the synthesis of MTHF. The activity of TiO2-supported Co catalysts in the hydrogenation of GVL to 2-MTHF was investigated, and several key factors with significant influence on the reaction have been identified and discussed. Among them, we pointed out the crucial role of the titania support as a versatile tool able to drive the properties of the supported metallic cobalt nanoparticles and consequently the activity of the catalysts. In addition to the necessary catalyst acidity, we showed that the catalyst performances were related to the Co particle size and to the metal–support interaction, both properties being highly dependent on the composition of the titania support. We demonstrated the beneficial co-presence of both anatase and rutile crystalline phases within the TiO2 support, and we proposed that the nature of the crystalline phase not only influences the Co particle size and the catalyst acidity but also allows tuning the SMSI effect for achieving optimum performances in 2-MTHF synthesis.

Abstract: International audience; Complementary tools to classical analytical methods, enzymatic biosensors are widely applied in medical diagnosis due totheir high sensitivity, potential selectivity, and their possibility of miniaturization/automation. Among the different protocolsof enzyme immobilization, the covalent binding and cross-linking of enzymes ensure the great stability of the developedbiosensor. Obtained manually by drop-casting using a specific cross-linker, this immobilization process is not suitable for thespecific functionalization of a single electrode out of a microelectrode array. In the present work, we developed a nanohybridenzymatic biosensor with high sensitivity by a mussel-inspired electro-cross-linking process using a cheap and abundantnatural molecule (tannic acid, TA), gold salt, and native enzymes. Based on the use of a cheap natural compound and goldsalt, this electro-crosslinking process based on catechol/amine reaction (i) is versatile, likely to be applied on any kind ofenzymes, (ii) does not require the synthesis of a specific cross-linker, (ii) give enzymatic biosensors with high and very stablesensitivity over two weeks upon storage at room temperature and (iv) is temporally and spatially controlled, allowing thespecific functionalization of a single electrode out of a microelectrode array. Besides the development of microbiosensors,this process can also be used for the design of enzymatic biofuel cells.

Abstract: International audience; Here we report on the optimization of NH2-UiO-66/TiO2/Au (ca. 1.5 wt%) composite photocatalysts applied to gas phase CO2 photocatalytic reduction in presence of water as reducing agent by varying NH2-UiO-66/TiO2 ratio and pH during synthesis. It is shown that 10 wt% NH2-UiO-66/TiO2/Au (at pH=7) composite leads to the best cumulated CH4 production rate of 136 mu mol/gcatalyst with 70% electronic selectivity over 5 h of continuous test. This composite exhibits the best compromise between MOF surface area and thus CO2 adsorption sites, visible light photons absorption capacity and a large interface contact area, which ensured preferable metal(Zr)-to-metal(Ti) charge carrier. Au deposition by impregnation/chemical reduction in also required to perform CO2 photoreduction, and may presumably act as electron traps, co-catalyst or surface plasmon resonator.

Abstract: International audience; Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are ecotoxicological threats because they are able to accumulate and transport toxic metals, persistent organic pollutants or pharmaceuticals products. Consequently, NP pollution is also a public health problem. MP and NP particles arise into surface water bodies and sea water through two major routes: 1) by the transport in the marine environment as synthetic microbeads or microparticles (for example, incorporated into cosmetic products, or during the washing of synthetic clothes) and 2) by the fragmentation of large plastic debris into MPs and NPs, through ultraviolet (UV) photodegradation, biodegradation, mechanical and chemical degradation processes (secondary microplastics). Even if, interest of the scientific community in environmental pollution caused by MP and NP started at the beginning of the 21st century, the research works for reducing and/or removing 2 them in water is very recent. The objective of this chapter is to present the main methods of treatment or removal of MPs and NPs from water, as well as the processes under development.

Abstract: New procedures envisioned for dental pulp regeneration after pulpectomy include cell homing strategy. It involves host endogenous stem cell recruitment and activation. To meet this cell-free approach, we need to design a relevant scaffold to support cell migration from tissues surrounding the dental root canal. A composite membrane made of electrospun poly(lactic acid) nanofibers and electrosprayed polycaprolactone with tannic acid (TA) microparticles which mimics the architecture of the extracellular matrix was first fabricated. After rolling the membrane in the form of a 3D conical scaffold and subsequently coating it with gelatin, it can be directly inserted into the root canal. The porous morphology of the construct was characterized by SEM at different length scales. It was shown that TA was released from the 3D conical scaffold after 2 days in PBS at 37 °C. Biocompatibility studies were first assessed by seeding human dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) on planar membranes coated or not coated with gelatin to compare the surfaces. After 24 h, the results highlighted that the gelatin-coating increased the membrane biocompatibility and cell viability. Similar DPSC morphology and proliferation on both membrane surfaces were observed. The culture of DPSCs on conical scaffolds showed cell colonization in the whole cone volume, proving that the architecture of the conical scaffold was suitable for cell migration. Abstract: International audience; Nickel(0) nanoparticles coordinated to NHC ligands bearing a N-coordinated cynnamyl moiety were readily prepared by reduction of a [NiCpBr(NHC-cynnamyl)] complex with methyl magnesium bromide. The combination of a strong sigma-donor NHC ligand with a pi-coordinating appended cinnamyl moiety likely prevents nickel(0) nanoparticles aggregation to larger inactive species, and allows the effective and (Z)-selective semi-hydrogenation of alkynes and ynamides.

Abstract: We present the effect of oxidative etching in FLG/TiO$_2$ hybrids on FLG edges chemistry/morphology addressing also the catalytic activity of TiO$_2$ NPs. According to the XPS and TGA analysis the oxidation degree strongly depends on TiO$_2$:FLG ratio. The preparation of two series of FLG/TiO$_2$ hybrids via sol-gel method and in-situ oxidation permitted to correctly describe and distinguish the chemical composition, core shift and charge distribution in C1s XPS with Tip peak as reference. Such analysis is challenging in carbon materials due the overlapping of C1s peaks from the sample and adventitious carbon reference. We claim the formation of interfacial dipole as possible direct signature of charge transfer from TiO$_2$ to FLG. A downward shift of C1s (sp$^2$C) up to 1.4 eV is measured and contributions of non sp$^2$C are determined in the composites. The modifications related to the oxidation are supported by TEM/SEM observations, and referred to non-catalytic oxidation and oxidation in mechanically mixed components. Cet article présente l'origine et la formation des microplastiques, ainsi que les méthodes pour les éliminer des eaux contaminées, notamment par photocatalyse.

Abstract: International audience; The search for simple, low-cost, versatile, easily accessible, stimuli-responsive, highly emissive molecular fluorophores emitting both in solution and in the solid-state has prompted us to investigate the optical properties of a series of synthetically accessible salicyladehyde derivatives possessing a π-conjugated moiety at their 4-position. These dyes are mainly known as synthetic intermediates but can also display sizeable Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer (ESIPT) fluorescence owing to the presence of a 6-membered H-bonded ring in their structure. The photophysical properties of these compounds have been studied in solution (multiple solvents) and in the solid-state, as doped in PMMA films, leading to the observation of a pronounced fluorosolvatochromism. Modification of the spacer (ethynyl, vinyl or direct connection) involved the π-delocalization triggers major differences in terms of maximum emission wavelength and fluorescence quantum yields in the various media studied. All photophysical observations are rationalized by first-principle calculations.

Abstract: International audience; Two new dumbbell-shaped molecules based on two solubilizing and structuring triazatruxene (TAT) units linked by a central chromophore were synthesized and studied. The central chromophore was an electro-deficient fluorene-malononitrile (FM) unit, that can be functionalized symmetrically on two different positions, giving rise to two positional isomers, called TAT-pFM and TAT-mFM, when the TATs are connected to the 2,7-and 3,6positions, respectively. The two isomers exhibited different electronic conjugation pathways that drastically affect their absorption properties and energy levels. Moreover, while TAT-pFM was organized in a stable 3D mesomorphic structure from room-temperature to the melting, TAT-mFM remained crystalline and decomposed before melting. Finally, despite a lower hole mobility, the TAT-mFM exhibited the highest Power Conversion Efficiency (PCE) of about 2% in organic solar cells. This higher PCE was attributed essentially to the pronounced internal charge transfer band contribution to the charge photogeneration observed in TAT-mFM solar cells.

Abstract: International audience; Covalent Organic Frameworks RIO-13, RIO-12, RIO-11, and RIO-11m were investigated towards their CO2 capture properties by thermogravimetric analysis at 1 atm and 40 °C. These microporous COFs bear in common the azine backbone composed of hydroxy-benzene moieties but differ in the relative number of hydroxyl groups present in each material. Thus, their sorption capacities were studied as a function of their textural and chemical properties. Their maximum CO2 uptake values showed a strong correlation with an increasing specific surface area, but that property alone could not fully explain the CO2 uptake data. Hence, the specific CO2 uptake, combined with DFT calculations, indicated that the relative number of hydroxyl groups in the COF backbone acts as an adsorption threshold, as the hydroxyl groups were indeed identified as relevant adsorption sites in all the studied COFs. Additionally, the best performing COF was thoroughly investigated, experimentally and theoretically, for its CO2 capture properties in a variety of CO2 concentrations and temperatures, and showed excellent isothermal recyclability up to 3 cycles.

Abstract: Preferential oxidation of CO (COPrOx) is a catalytic reaction targeting the removal of trace amounts of CO from hydrogen-rich gas mixtures. Non-noble metal catalysts, such as Cu and Co, can be equally active to Pt for the reaction; however, their commercialization is limited by their poor stability. We have recently shown that CoO is the most active state of cobalt for COPrOx, but under certain reaction conditions, it is readily oxidized to Co3O4 and deactivates. Here, we report a simple method to stabilize the Co2+ state by vanadium addition. The V-promoted cobalt catalyst exhibits considerably higher activity and stability than pure cobalt. The nature of the catalytic active sites during COPrOx was established by operando NAP-XPS and NEXAFS, while the stability of the Co2+ state on the surface was verified by in situ NEXAFS at 1 bar pressure. The active phase consists of an ultra-thin cobalt-vanadate surface layer, containing tetrahedral V5+ and octahedral Co2+ cations, with an electronic and geometric structure that is deviating from the standard mixed bulk oxides. In addition, V addition helps to maintain the population of Co2+ species involved in the reaction, inhibiting carbonate species formation that are responsible for the deactivation. The promoting effect of V is discussed in terms of enhancement of CoO redox stability on the surface induced by electronic and structural modifications. These results demonstrate that V-promoted cobalt is a promising COPrOx catalyst and validate the application of in situ spectroscopy to provide the concept for designing better performing catalysts.

Abstract: International audience; The presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and particulate matter (PM) in air is known to provoke deleterious effects on human health. This work focused on the monitoring of PM and PAHs in the air over four weeks in a peri-urban site in Strasbourg (France), using a three-stage cascade impactor and a particle analyser allowing PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 discrimination. Meteorological conditions were monitored to study their influence on the pollutant levels. The average PM10 concentration of the cascade impactor and particle analyser varied from 11.8 to 80.2 µg/m3 and 10.6 to 220.2 µg/m3, respectively. The PAH total concentration ranged in 1.1–7.6 ng/m3 and a predominance of 5- and 6-ring PAHs was observed. PAHs were also more abundant in finer particles (PM1). Specifically, identified PAHs are traffic tracers suggesting that vehicular emission was one of its main sources. Two pollution episodes, associated with either a Saharan dust wind episode or traffic pollution, were observed, and led to PM10 and PM2.5 surpassing the daily limit values established by the European Union despite the traffic limitations according to the COVID restrictions. The total PAH concentrations were the highest during these periods suggesting PAHs might be bound to and transported via dust particles.

Optimization studies concluded that electron rich and bulky phosphine ligands are required to ensure completion of the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction involving a bulky aromatic boronic acid. The photophysical properties of all dyes revealed a strong influence of the nature of the solvent on the optical properties, as protic solvents tend to stabilize enol tautomers and induce dual emission. Our studies confirmed that, unlike the majority of organic dyes, ESIPT fluorophores do not undergo π-stacking in the solid-state. The nature of the excited-states was explored by ab initio calculations.

Abstract: International audience; Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and a major indoor air pollutant, which has led the authorities to regulate its levels in the air. To reduce indoor airborne concentrations, several strategies can be adopted, namely the reduction of emissions or the elimination of this pollutant by different depollution processes. Among them, adsorption on highly porous solid materials remains one of the most efficient strategy. This study aims to provide experimental data on formaldehyde adsorption capacity over different microporous materials at realistic levels (~164 ppb), being representative of the performance of the investigated materials in a real environment. For that purpose, gaseous formaldehyde breakthrough experiments were performed under laboratory-controlled conditions over several porous solids: focusing on cation-exchanged zeolites and metalorganic frameworks (MOFs). These materials were fully characterized in terms of textural and structural properties. Cu-based MOFs acted as more promising HCHO adsorbents than zeolites, exhibiting at least one order of magnitude higher adsorption capacity under realistic indoor conditions. Among MOFs, SUM-102 (Strasbourg University Material) exhibited the highest surfacic adsorption capacity (0.52 μg HCHO m − 2), yielding more than 1 kg HCHO adsorbed per m 3 sorbent being superior to the zeolite family by at least one order of magnitude.

Abstract: International audience; Nowadays, phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs) is a widespread technology, in which all the high-performance devices are constructed on a stack of different organic layers called multi-layer devices (ML-PhOLEDs). Thanks to these functional layers, the injection, the transport, and the recombination of holes and electrons in the emissive layer (EML) are significantly improved, allowing to reach high performances. In this technology, the ideal devices are the single-layer PhOLEDs (SL-PhOLEDs), with a very simple stack only constituted by the electrodes and the EML. These devices are simple, very easy to fabricate, and can hence significantly decrease their costs. Nevertheless, removing the functional layers of an OLED drastically decreases the performances and there is, so far, only a few examples of high-performance SL-PhOLEDs. Thus, in SL-PhOLEDs, the role of the functional layer should be performed by the EML, which should allow an excellent injection, transport, and recombination of holes and electrons. In this work, thanks to a rational molecular design of the EML, we report a green-emitting SL-PhOLED, displaying a very high external quantum efficiency of 22.7%. The EML of this device is constructed on the barely studied Ir(ppy)2acac phosphor and a high efficiency host material possessing a Donor-spiro-Acceptor design. This performance is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest reported to date for SL-PhOLEDs (all colors considered). Through a structure/property/device performance relationship study combining morphological (AFM), photophysical (time-resolved spectroscopy) and charge transport studies, we show that the EML presents all the required characteristics such as smooth surface, quick radiative deactivation, and ambipolarity. In addition, the comparison with Ir(ppy)3, the most famous green emitter used in PhOLEDs, highlights the high potential of Ir(ppy)2acac. The impact of the phosphorescent emitter on the ambipolarity of the charge transport is particularly evidenced.

Abstract: International audience; The use of Non-Fullerene Acceptors (NFAs) in the active layer of organic solar cells (OSCs) has made it possible to exceed 18% conversion efficiency. However, OSCs still present stability issues under operational conditions that need to be surpassed for their industrialization. In this work, we investigated binary and ternary blends to examine their efficiency and their stability as active layers of OSCs. We used a fluorinated polymer (PF2) as an electron donor and two different electron acceptors, a fullerene derivative (PC 71 BM) and a NFA (EH-IDTBR). We demonstrated that using EH-IDTBR instead of PC 71 BM leads to a decrease in efficiency attributed to the low out-of-plane electron mobility measured in the blend. However, using EH-IDTBR as single electron-acceptor significantly enhanced the OSCs stability under continuous illumination. Ternary blends were tested to reach simultaneously a high efficiency and a long-term stability. The best efficiency/stability compromise appeared to be when using EH-IDTBR only as electron-acceptor. We identified changes in the main charge-carrier recombination mechanism in photo-degraded devices from bimolecular in low EH-IDTBR content blends to trap-assisted in high EH-IDTBR ones. Finally, the blend morphology at a nanometer scale appeared as stable in high EH-IDTBR content blends while photo-degradation impacted significantly the morphology of the low EH-IDTBR content blend.

Abstract: Ultrathin palladium nanosheets on carbon black grains have been straightforwardly prepared under reductant-free conditions using ultrasonication. The as-prepared composites (showing a quite unusual morphology of Pd-deposits) have been scrutinized as catalysts in the selective alkyne-to-alkene hydrogenation under mild operational conditions. Their activity, selectivity, and robustness in the process are outstanding, opening new horizons for simpler synthetic procedures for this class of composites. Moreover, the tight anchorage of the large and thin metal sheets to the carbon grains of the support dramatically reduces the active phase surface mobility during catalysis. Besides preserving the catalyst performance, this peculiar palladium morphology strongly limits the environmental risks stemming from metal nanoparticles leaching in heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract: Poly(glycerol sebacate) (PGS) is a promising material designed for soft tissue engineering. Several examples of its use to prepare electrospun scaffolds can be found in the literature. However, the fabrication of nanofibrous scaffolds based on crosslinked PGS remains challenging because of its thermoset nature. Here, we propose a new method to electrospin PGS in blend with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD) as carrier molecules. After electrospinning, the PGS prepolymers were crosslinked by thermal treatment under vacuum, resulting in elastomeric fibers. Finally, unreacted molecules were removed by immersion of the fibers in water. Our PGS/HPβCD-based nanofibrous scaffolds are good candidates for soft tissue engineering with a Young's modulus of 2 MPa and strain at break of 390% in the dry state, reaching 120 to 170 kPa and 70% in the wet state.

Abstract: International audience; Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) represent an emerging class of solvents featuring some characteristics of their ionic liquid cousins – low vapor pressure, relatively wide liquid range, non-flammability and the ability to dissolve polar species – along with unique specificities, such as their limited toxicity and an improved biocompatibility. Among the numerous applications these solvents may find, their use as media for the ionothermal preparation and post-synthetic modification of metal- and covalent organic frameworks (MOFs and COFs) has been recently explored. This contribution aims at providing an overview of the state of the art in this area focusing on the synthetic aspects as well as on the applications of the materials and composites reported. In particular, the different roles DESs can play in the MOF/COF formation are highlighted. Indeed, while DESs act as solvents, they may also behave as structure-directing agents. Thus, one of their components or decomposition products formed under the ionothermal conditions may be present in the architectures, either as a ligand coordinated to the metal centers or in the pores of the MOFs, yielding unknown crystalline systems. Removal of the DES components from the MOF has been shown as an efficient strategy for the preparation of novel porous architectures. Furthermore, DESs can be employed for the conversion of one MOF into another. DESs show clear advantages as media for COF synthesis, such as the possibility to run reactions at lower temperature, in open-air vessels, with shortened reaction time or to elaborate COFs otherwise difficult to access and with a large variety of linkages. Beyond their solvent role, DESs can also be employed for post-synthetic modification, affording composites or hybrids benefiting from the properties of these media combined with the ones of the porous materials. Applications in catalysis for a diversity of reactions, in gas sorption or for the sensing/extraction of various analytes have been demonstrated

Abstract: International audience; Plasmonic silver nanoparticle, AgNPs (~14.1 nm) having an absorption peak at 421 nm was fabricated via a biogenic, rapid, and costless technique using Banana Waste Peduncles (BWP) as new disposals instead of plant extracts. According to HPLC analysis, BWP included gallic acid, catechin, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, etc. Degussa (P25) has been in-situ added in one-step to AgNPs using the microwave synthesis to produce nanocomposite sensitive to solar-light irradiation. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images showed incorporation of P25 over plasmonic AgNPs grown by spherical shape. Based on the photocatalytic process, methylene blue (MB) was fully degraded, and 16 min was sufficient for chromium (IV) reduction. AgNPs/Degussa nanocomposite is photochemical stable even after eight cycles. Besides, the antimicrobial activity indicated the capability of the nanocomposite, as an efficient antimicrobial agent for killing and prevent the diffusion of the nominated microbes; Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, and Aspergillus niger due to the synergistic effect of AgNPs. The cell viability showed up to 94.85% reliable cell migration, particularly at higher concentrations. The significant improvement of photoactivity and stability of the as-synthesized photocatalysts might be relevant for their reusability in practical applications.

Abstract: This paper presents a field campaign conducted in two French elementary schools for 5 weeks aiming at identifying effects of occupation and ventilation practices on indoor aldehyde concentrations and discriminating aldehyde emission from building materials and furniture. The investigated classrooms were first empty and not occupied whereas the furniture was added the following week. Normal school activities were restarted for the last three weeks under various ventilation practices. C2–C7 aldehydes concentrations were monitored with the conventional method based on DNPH derivatization using active sampling followed by off-line HPLC/UV analysis. Acetaldehyde (AA) and hexanal (HA) were the two main aldehydes present if formaldehyde is not considered. The weekly mean values of acetaldehyde concentrations were found in the range 9.5–13.1 μg m−3 (School 1), 9.4–17.6 μg m−3 (School 2) and equal to 5.3 μg m−3 (School 3). In Schools 2 and 3, weekly hexanal concentrations ranged between 3.3 and 5.4 μg m−3 but increased up to 40.1 μg m−3 in school 1 where painting work was performed during the week 2. Smaller amount of propionaldehyde (PA) and benzaldehyde (BA) were always detected, their weekly average concentrations being in the range 0.4–4.0 μg m−3 and 0.9–2.7 μg m−3 for PA and BA, respectively. The results supported by Student's tests show that building materials and furniture contribute to aldehyde emissions while ventilation significantly improves indoor air quality without being able to privilege one of the three ventilation scenarios tested.

Abstract: Planar conjugated molecular backbones are essential for achieving high charge carrier mobilities along molecular π-stacking directions but are often concomitant with poor charge transport in other directions. This is particularly the case for molecules that are functionalized with alkyl chains, which ensure good processability in solution but introduce detrimental insulating regions. Here, we show that soluble planar dumbbell-shaped molecules, composed of two triazatruxene (TAT) units covalently bonded to a central thiophene–thienopyrroledione–thiophene (TPD) segment self-assemble into an original structure that allows efficient 3D charge transport. Grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering investigations as well as micro-focus X-ray experiments on single crystals reveal that the TAT derivatives form a columnar-nematic mesophase in which columns of stacked TAT units spaced by molten chains are interconnected by TPD bridges. Upon annealing, a crystalline phase, stemming from the parent hexagonal mesophase, is obtained with the molecular stacking direction lying in-plane. Transport measurements in the crystalline phase reveal an unusually high out-of-plane hole mobility of 0.17 cm2 V−1 s−1 and a lower limit for the in-plane mobility of 0.05 cm2 V−1 s−1. The results suggest that the TPD segments bridging neighboring stacks of TAT columns are responsible for efficient hole transport in 3D.

Abstract: WOS:000587752900097; International audience; Cyber-physical energy system (CPES)-complex juxtaposition of multiple energy domains and communication and automation technologies-requires a sophisticated testing framework to achieve holistic assessment and validation, especially at large scale. In this article, the real supervision, control, and data acquisition (SCADA) system of CPES is integrated with the advanced techniques-real-time simulation (RTS) and power-hardware-inthe-loop (PHIL), in a cross-infrastructure manner to create a realistic validation environment for CPES. On the one hand, the method can be applied to extend the capacity of the infrastructures as well as creating a common resource and expertise pool. On the other hand, this approach combines the realistic data and advanced SCADA services with the flexibility of the RTS platform, which provides the possibility to emulate extreme and faulty scenarios with virtual equipment and topology. The proposed approach is demonstrated via a case study of analyzing the impact of communication on advanced voltage and frequency restoration in an isolated microgrid. The case study is implemented on two remote platforms PREDISPRISMES (70 km apart). The validation framework comprises the RTS and PHIL platform coupled with the OPC UA SCADA system in PRISMES, the control algorithm and the communication network simulator located in PREDIS platform.

Abstract: International audience; Novel 6-alkyl- and 6-alkenyl-3-fluoro-2-pyridinaldoximes have been synthesised by using a mild and efficient chemoselective hydrogenation of 6-alkynyl-3-fluoro-2-pyridinaldoxime scaffolds, without altering the reducible, unprotected, sensitive oxime functionality and the C-F bond. These novel 6-alkyl-3-fluoro-2-pyridinaldoximes may find medicinal application as antidotes to organophosphate poisoning. Indeed, one low-molecular-weight compound exhibited increased affinity for sarin-inhibited acetylcholinesterase (hAChE) and greater reactivation efficiency or resurrection for sarin-inhibited hAChE, compared with those of 2-pyridinaldoxime (2-PAM) and 1-({[4-(aminocarbonyl)pyridinio]methoxy}methyl)-2-[(hydroxyimino)methyl]pyridinium chloride (HI-6), two pyridinium salts currently used as antidote by several countries. In addition, the uncharged 3-fluorinated bifunctional hybrid showed increased in vitro blood-brain barrier permeability compared with those of 2-PAM, HI-6 and obidoxime. These promising features of novel low-molecular-weight alkylfluoropyridinaldoxime open up a new era for the design, synthesis and discovery of central non-quaternary broad spectrum reactivators for organophosphate-inhibited cholinesterases.

Abstract: The mineral apatite, Ca5(PO4)3(F,Cl,OH), is a ubiquitous accessory mineral, with its volatile content and isotopic compositions used to interpret the evolution of H2O on planetary bodies. During hypervelocity impact, extreme pressures shock target rocks resulting in deformation of minerals; however, relatively few microstructural studies of apatite have been undertaken. Given its widespread distribution in the solar system, it is important to understand how apatite responds to progressive shock metamorphism. Here, we present detailed microstructural analyses of shock deformation in ~560 apatite grains throughout ~550 m of shocked granitoid rock from the peak ring of the Chicxulub impact structure, Mexico. A combination of high-resolution backscattered electron (BSE) imaging, electron backscatter diffraction mapping, transmission Kikuchi diffraction mapping, and transmission electron microscopy is used to characterize deformation within apatite grains. Systematic, crystallographically controlled deformation bands are present within apatite, consistent with tilt boundaries that contain the 'c' (axis) and result from slip in ' (Formula presented.) ' (direction) on (Formula presented.) (plane) during shock deformation. Deformation bands contain complex subgrain domains, isolated dislocations, and low-angle boundaries of ~1° to 2°. Planar fractures within apatite form conjugate sets that are oriented within either { (Formula presented.), { (Formula presented.), { (Formula presented.), or (Formula presented.). Complementary electron microprobe analyses (EPMA) of a subset of recrystallized and partially recrystallized apatite grains show that there is an apparent change in MgO content in shock-recrystallized apatite compositions. This study shows that the response of apatite to shock deformation can be highly variable, and that application of a combined microstructural and chemical analysis workflow can reveal complex deformation histories in apatite grains, some of which result in changes to crystal structure and composition, which are important for understanding the genesis of apatite in both terrestrial and extraterrestrial environments.

Abstract: Passive and active samplers were compared for the monitoring of pesticides in the atmosphere during field campaigns undertaken in Alsace (northeastern France). Two different types of passive samplers were compared: XAD-2 resin and carbon-based foam. The results show that active and passive sampling gives comparable results for the sampling of atmospheric pesticides. It is assumed that passive sampling could be used as a low-cost and simple alternative due to the number and quantities of pesticides detected, and the use of carbon-based foam as a passive sampler permits the detection of more molecules than those detected by the XAD®-2 resin, which remains the most efficient sampler for adsorbing more volatile pesticides, mecoprop-p, carbendazim, fluroxypyr, and isoproturon, among others. Thus, NMC@SiC was found to be a better adsorbent than XAD®-2 resin for the collection of a wide range of pesticides in the air. The calculated sampling rates varied between 0.43 and 6.14 m3 d−1 for the XAD®-2 resin and between 0.08 and 6.80 m3 d−1 for the NMC@SiC foam and are of the same order of magnitude and comparable to the literature values.

Abstract: International audience; para-azaquinodimethane (p-AQM) based quinoidal-donor (Q-D) alternating copolymers offer a unique opportunity to investigate the properties of quinoidal polymers. It was however reported that the bandgap increases with increasing number of donor aryl units, as a result of a weakening of the quinoidal character in the polymer backbone. To overcome this issue, herein two new polymers were designed and synthesized by incorporating fused donor (PAQM2T-TT) and vinylene linker (PAQM2T-TVT) units, following a strategy of enhanced backbone planarity. The thiophene-containing polymers PAQM3T and PAQM4T were also synthesized for better understanding of the influence of structural variations. Thus, in comparison with PAQM3T and PAQM4T, PAQM2T-TT and PAQM2T-TVT exhibited slight red shift in spite of having more extended donor units, which is consistent with enhanced planarity and quinoidal character as suggested by DFT calculations. It is also found that the different donor units have a limited impact on the HOMO energy level of the p-AQM copolymers. Transport properties are measured by field effect transistors, and the photovoltaic properties of these p-AQM based polymers are reported for the first time, as electron donor materials in inverted configuration devices. PAQM2T-TVT containing thiophene vinylene thiophene comonomer exhibits planar structure leading to a hole mobility of 3.8×10-2 cm-2 V s-1. When combined with a fullerene acceptor in solar cells, PAQM2T-TVT polymer exhibited a highest PCE of 2.32%.

Abstract: International audience; Over the last decade, halogenated semiconducting polymers have attracted considerable interest due to their outstanding optoelectronic properties. Thus, most today's OPV benchmark organic semiconductors are halogenated materials, either electron donor polymers or non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) small molecules. However, the nature and position of the substituted halogen atoms in halogenated semiconducting polymers impact, through self-assembly modification, on their optoelectronic properties in a way which is 2 difficult to predict. Yet, the solid-state self-assembling of this materials has been shown to be a key parameter towards high charge transport properties and photovoltaic efficiencies. In this context, there is still a need to develop analytical methods that will enable an atomicscale structural characterization of these materials as function of the halogenation. In this manuscript, we explore the solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) under magic angle spinning (MAS) as a tool to investigate the local structure and supramolecular organization of a series of conjugated polymers, specially designed for this study. Through a comprehensive study using complementary techniques including MAS-NMR, small and wideangle X-ray scattering (SWAXS) and molecular modelling investigations, we have definitely succeeded in determining the molecular conformation of these polymers in relation to their chemical composition.

Abstract: International audience; Here we report the synthesis and properties of heterosubtituted αβfused BODIPY fluorophores. The compounds were obtained in good yields by sequential and selective Stille cross-coupling reactions from 2,3,5,6-tetrahalo-BODIPY, allowing the introduction of different subtituents at the 3,5 and 2,6 positions of the BODIPY ring. The final fused compounds were synthesized using oxidative cyclisation with ferrous chloride. The fully fused compounds show a strong bathochromically shifted emission along with a hyperchromic shift of the absorption maxima. The fluorescence quantum yields remain relatively large for compounds emitting in this wavelength range. Computational studies are planned to fully understand the photophysical behaviors of these dyes.

Abstract: International audience; Anxiety disorder is one of the most reported complications following organophosphorus (OP) nerve agent (NA) exposure. The goal of this study was to characterize the long-term behavioral impact of a single low dose exposure to 4-nitrophenyl isopropyl methylphosphonate (NIMP), a sarin surrogate. We chose two different sublethal doses of NIMP, each corresponding to a fraction of the median lethal dose (one mild and one convulsive), and evaluated behavioral changes over a 6-month period following exposure. Mice exposed to both doses showed anxious behavior which persisted for six-months post-exposure. A longitudinal magnetic resonance imaging examination did not reveal any anatomical changes in the amygdala throughout the 6-month period. While no cholinesterase activity change or neuroinflammation could be observed at the latest timepoint in the amygdala of NIMP-exposed mice, important modifications in white blood cell counts were noted, reflecting a perturbation of the systemic immune system. Furthermore, intestinal inflammation and microbiota changes were observed at 6-months in NIMP-exposed animals regardless of the dose received. This is the first study to identify long-term behavioral impairment, systemic homeostasis disorganization and gut microbiota alterations following OP sublethal exposure. Our findings highlight the importance of long-term care for victims of NA exposure, even in asymptomatic cases.

Abstract: Organic semiconductor materials such as planar conjugated small molecules are of great interest to the photovoltaic community. In thin films, the exciton and charge carrier dynamics, which are crucial to photovoltaic device operation, depend in a non-trivial way on the organic molecular structure and on the molecular organization in the solid state. Recently, the exciton diffusion has been found to strongly depend on the crystalline order of the organic thin films. This work presents the study of the exciton lifetime in an innovative class of molecular semiconductors able to present different crystalline order. This family of molecules has a “dumbbell-shaped” structure based on triazatruxene units that act as a π-stacking platform. Such molecules with different side-chains have been found to self-assemble into various crystalline and liquid crystalline phases. We have studied the steady-state photoluminescence and the exciton lifetime for several triazatruxene-based derivatives with different side-chains, in solution and in thin films for different solid state phases. In solution, the fluorescence lifetime corresponds to the reference value that can be obtained without intermolecular interaction. In thin films, we measured the exciton lifetime for different molecular structures in order to correlate the exciton dynamics with the molecular stacking. The results reveal a significant increase in the exciton lifetime with the enhancement of the structural order.
