The potential of utilizing inorganic constituents in processed animal proteins (PAPs) for species identification in animal feeds was investigated, with the aim of using these constituents to ensure the quality and authenticity of the products. This study aimed to quantify the inorganic content across various PAP species and assess whether inorganic analysis could effectively differentiate between PAP species, ultimately aiding in the identification of PAP fractions in animal feeds. Four types of PAPs, namely bovine, swine, poultry, and fish-based, were analyzed and compared to others made up of feathers of vegetal-based feed. Also, three insect-based PAPs (Cricket, Silkworm, Flour Moth) were considered in this study to evaluate the differences in terms of the nutrients present in this type of feed. Ionic chromatography (IC) was used to reveal the concentrations of NO 3 - , NO 2 , Cl - , and SO 4 2- , and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) to detect Al, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Si, Sr, Ti, and Zn. The application of multivariate chemometric techniques to the experimental results allowed us to determine the identification capability of the inorganic composition to identify correlations among the variables and to reveal similarities and differences among the different species. The results show the possibility of using this component for discriminating between different PAPS; in particular, fish PAPs are high in Cd, Sr, Na, and Mg content; swine PAPs have lower metal content due to high fat; feathers and vegetal feed have similar Al, Si, and Ni, but feathers are higher in Fe and Zn; and insect PATs have nutrient levels comparable to PAPs of other origins but are very high in Zn, Cu, and K.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been developed as green solvents and these are capable as alternatives to conventional solvents used for the extraction of organic and inorganic species from food and water samples. The continuous generation of contaminated waste and increasing concern for the human health and environment have compelled the scientific community to investigate more ecological schemes. In this concern, the use of DESs have developed in one of the chief approach in the field of chemistry. These solvents have appeared as a capable substitute to conventional hazardous solvents and ionic liquids. The DESs has distinctive properties, easy preparation and components availability. It is not only used in scienctific fields but also used in quotidian life. There are many advantages of DESs in analytical chemistry, they are largely used for extraction and determination of inorganic and organic compounds from different samples. In previous a few years, several advanced researches have been focused on the separation and preconcentration of low level of pollutants using DESs as the extractants. This review summarizes the use of DESs in the separation and preconcentration of organic and inorganic species from water and food samples using various microextraction processes.

A nationwide survey of inorganic components of tap water all over Japan was conducted from 2019 to 2024. In this survey, 1564 tap water samples were collected, and an additional 194 tap water samples were collected from 33 other countries. The water samples were analyzed for 27 dissolved inorganic components, with a primary focus on the distribution of major and trace components, including Ca, Mg, K, Na, Cl - , NO 3 - , SO 4 2- , total-hardness, Al, Fe, Cu, Mn, and Zn. The Japanese tap water hardness was 50.5 ± 30.2 (± 1σ SD) mg/L, classified as soft water according to the World Health Organization (WHO) classification. The average content of each major component in Japanese tap water tended to be lower than those in other countries. Furthermore, Piper trilinear diagrams were used to categorize Japanese tap water types. The dominating water types were the Ca-HCO 3 and mixed types, which had a nationwide distribution. Japanese tap water generally complied with Japanese and WHO drinking water criteria, with only 1% (17/1564 sites) of the samples exceeding water quality standards. Observations of water quality changes for 2 years at three household faucets revealed that fluctuations in major components and trace metals (Al, Fe, Cu, Mn, and Zn) varied in different patterns. Herbs and spices are known to be prone to food fraud and accurate analytical tools are needed to detect adulterants. Amongst the potential adulteration, dilution with bulking agents has regularly been reported, especially with inorganic materials such as talc or brick powder. Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (ED-XRF) spectrometry is a well-established non-destructive analytical technique for qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis of a wide variety of samples. ED-XRF was here evaluated for the detection of inorganic adulterants in turmeric, paprika and oregano, which were selected as representative for the herbs & spices food category. Magnesium, silicon, and calcium were identified as elements to detect talc, soapstone, brick/clay powder, and chalk inorganic adulterants. ED-XRF successfully detected adulterated samples when spiked down to 5% (w/w) in the selected herbs and spices. With its ease-of-use and speed, ED-XRF is well adapted for the monitoring of inorganic adulteration of herbs and spices along the supply chain.

Fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) chemical composition has strong and diverse impacts on the planetary environment, climate, and health. These effects are still not well understood due to limited surface observations and uncertainties in chemical model simulations. We developed a four-dimensional spatiotemporal deep forest (4D-STDF) model to estimate daily PM 2.5 chemical composition at a spatial resolution of 1 km in China since 2000 by integrating measurements of PM 2.5 species from a high-density observation network, satellite PM 2.5 retrievals, atmospheric reanalyses, and model simulations. Cross-validation results illustrate the reliability of sulfate (SO 4 2- ), nitrate (NO 3 - ), ammonium (NH 4 + ), and chloride (Cl - ) estimates, with high coefficients of determination (CV-R 2 ) with ground-based observations of 0.74, 0.75, 0.71, and 0.66, and average root-mean-square errors (RMSE) of 6.0, 6.6, 4.3, and 2.3 μg/m 3 , respectively. The three components of secondary inorganic aerosols (SIAs) account for 21% (SO 4 2- ), 20% (NO 3 - ), and 14% (NH 4 + ) of the total PM 2.5 mass in eastern China; we observed significant reductions in the mass of inorganic components by 40-43% between 2013 and 2020, slowing down since 2018. Comparatively, the ratio of SIA to PM 2.5 increased by 7% across eastern China except in Beijing and nearby areas, accelerating in recent years. SO 4 2- has been the dominant SIA component in eastern China, although it was surpassed by NO 3 - in some areas, e.g., Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region since 2016. SIA, accounting for nearly half (∼46%) of the PM 2.5 mass, drove the explosive formation of winter haze episodes in the North China Plain. A sharp decline in SIA concentrations and an increase in SIA-to-PM 2.5 ratios during the COVID-19 lockdown were also revealed, reflecting the enhanced atmospheric oxidation capacity and formation of secondary particles.

Background: The World Health Organization (WHO) has published criteria for determining the quality of drinking water since 1958. Since 1984, these criteria were termed "guidelines" to emphasize that they are not national standards, but rather guidelines for nations to develop their own national standards, which may take into account local environmental, social, economic, and cultural conditions. When calculating guideline values (GVs), the WHO reviews the toxicological literature, calculates a health-based value (HBV), and determines whether the HBV should be adopted as a GV. The WHO also considers aesthetic aspects of drinking water quality, such as taste and the staining of plumbing fixtures, and additionally supplies aesthetic values (AVs) for certain drinking water contaminants. There is no central registry for national drinking water standards, so the degree of variation of national drinking water standards is not known., Methods: We examined standards, guidelines, and background documents for all inorganic contaminants published by the WHO from 1958-2022. We also searched for national drinking water standards for all independent countries., Results: We found the WHO currently has 16 GVs, six HBVs without GVs, and six AVs without HBVs or GVs for inorganic drinking water contaminants, excluding disinfection agents and their byproducts. More than half of the point of departure studies used to support these values were published in 2005 or earlier. Ninety-eight percent of the world's population lives in jurisdictions with drinking water standards, and 14 countries directly link their national standards to the current WHO's drinking water guidelines. Lack of transparency (standards available only through purchase) and typographical errors are common problems, especially for resource-limited countries., Conclusions: The WHO drinking water guidelines are crucially important for drinking water safety; they are used for guidance or as official standards throughout the world. Optoelectronic synapses combining optical-sensing and synaptic functions are playing an increasingly vital role in the neuromorphic computing systems development, which can efficiently process visual information and complex recognition, memory, and learning. Metal halides are considered promising candidates for synaptic devices due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. However, the toxicity of lead and the further development of device functions are the recognized problems at present. Herein, a flexible optoelectronic synapses system based on high-quality lead-free Cs 3 Bi 2 I 9 nanocrystals is demonstrated, in which the carrier confinement caused by the band mismatching between the Cs 3 Bi 2 I 9 and the organic semiconductor layer provides the possibility to simulate synaptic behaviors. The synaptic functions including long/short-term memory and learning-forgetting-relearning are demonstrated in this device and visual perception, visual memory, and color recognition functions are successfully implemented. Additionally, the flexible device exhibits excellent robustness and can realize imaging of light distribution under curved hemispheres similar to the human eye. Finally, through the simulation based on an artificial neural network algorithm, the device successfully realizes the high-precision recognition of handwritten digital images and possesses a strong fault tolerant capability even in bending states. Determination of geographical origin of honey is important to consumers to confirm authenticity. This study investigated the elemental fingerprint of 181 honey samples collected from apiary sites in six regions of North Island, New Zealand to determine if differences were observed due to region of collection or land use surrounding the hive (e.g. agricultural, rural, urban). Using principal component analysis, soil related elements (Ca, K, Mg, Mn, Na) provided 75.2% discrimination of samples in the first two principal components. Overall, low concentrations of heavy metals were observed; lead was present in close proximity to highly trafficked roads (28.1% of samples; 9.50-76.5 µg kg -1 ) and cadmium was primarily present in honey collected from agricultural land in the Waikato (<51.6 µg kg -1 ). The international seafood trade is based on food safety, quality, sustainability, and traceability. Mussels are bio-accumulative sessile organisms that need regular control to guarantee their safe consumption. However, no well-established and validated methods exist to trace mussel origin, even if several attempts have been made over the years. Recently, an inorganic multi-elemental fingerprint coupled to multivariate statistics has increasingly been applied in food quality control. The mussel shell can be an excellent reservoir of foreign inorganic chemical species, allowing recording long-term environmental changes. The present work investigates the multi-elemental composition of mussel shells, including Al, Cu, Cr, Zn, Mn, Cd, Co, U, Ba, Ni, Pb, Mg, Sr, and Ca, determined by inductively-coupled plasma mass-spectrometry in Mytilus galloprovincialis collected along the Central Adriatic Coast (Marche Region, Italy) at 25 different sampling sites (18 farms and 7 natural banks) located in seven areas. The experimental data, coupled with chemometric approaches (principal components analysis and linear discriminant analysis), were used to create a statistical model able to discriminate samples as a function of their production site. The LDA model is suitable for achieving a correct assignment of >90% of individuals sampled to their respective harvesting locations and for being applied to counteract fraud.

Nanotoxicology remains an important and emerging field since only recent years have seen the improvement of biological models and exposure setups toward real-life scenarios. The appropriate analysis of nanomaterial fate in these conditions also required methodological developments in imaging to become sensitive enough and element specific. In the last 2-4 years, impressive breakthroughs have been achieved using electron microscopy, nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry, X-ray fluorescence microscopy, or fluorescent sensors. Advancement in rapid targeted chemical analysis of homemade and improvised explosive devices is critical for the identification of explosives-based hazards and threats. Gradient elution moving boundary electrophoresis (GEMBE), a robust electrokinetic separation technique, was employed for the separation and detection of common inorganic oxidizers from frequently encountered fuel-oxidizer mixtures. The GEMBE system incorporated sample and run buffer reservoirs, a short capillary (5 cm), an applied electric field, and a pressure-driven counterflow. GEMBE provided a separation format that allowed for continuous injection of sample, selectivity of analytes, and no sample cleanup or filtration prior to analysis. Nitrate, chlorate, and perchlorate oxidizers were successfully detected from low explosive propellants (e.g., black powders and black powder substitutes), pyrotechnics (e.g., flash powder), and tertiary explosive mixtures (e.g., ammonium nitrate- and potassium chlorate-based fuel-oxidizer mixtures). Separation of these mixtures exhibited detection without interference from a plethora of additional organic and inorganic fuels, enabled single particle analysis, and demonstrated semiquantitative capabilities. The bulk counterflow successfully excluded difficult components from fouling the capillary, yielding estimated limits of detection down to approximately 10 μmol/L. A quick, flexible and reliable method was developed, based on laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), for accurate assessment of nanomaterial composition with sample amounts in the picogram to nanogram range. We demonstrate its capabilities for the analysis of surface-modified TiO 2 nanoparticulate (NP) catalyst materials. For sampling, suspensions of NP were deposited on a substrate material, ablated with a pulsed laser and then analysed using quadrupole ICP-MS. The calibration and quantification approach is based on the use of so-called micro-dried droplets (μDD) as the standard material. To overcome some of the major drawbacks of conventional dried droplet approaches, self-aliquoting wells were used in this work. By mimicking the ablation conditions for the sample and standard, it was possible to create a pseudo-matrix-matched calibration, not only for this specific NP composition but also for a larger variety of samples. A commercially available reference material (AUROlite™, Strem Chemicals) was used to compare the method against established methods such as slurry analysis and microwave-assisted digestion in combination with subsequent liquid sample measurement. The results obtained with the proposed procedure (0.74%wt ± 0.13%wt) are in good agreement to a certified value (0.8%wt) and added an additional layer of information. Due to the significantly reduced sampling size in comparison with the investigated liquid measurement approaches, it was possible to obtain information about the homogeneity of the catalyst material. The results indicate that the AUROlite™ reference material has a heterogeneous loading which requires more than 300 pg of material to be used to cancel out. Objective: To explore the composition characteristics of atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and their impact on the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)., Methods: The atmospheric PM2.5 samples and BALF samples from COPD patients were collected from June 2, 2017 to October 30, 2018, and allocated into a high-risk of PM2.5 inhalation group and a low-risk PM2.5 inhalation group according to the heating season in Harbin. Inorganic elements were detected by ICP-MS, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were detected by GC/MS., Results: Twenty-six inorganic elements were found in 54 BALF specimens. There was a high correspondence in inorganic elements between BALF and atmospheric PM2.5. Trace elements Cr, Mn, V, and Co, and toxic trace elements Al, Pb, Cd, As, and Ag were above the upper limit of normal blood. There were significant higher K, Ti, Fe, Co, Cu, Se, Rb, Ag, and Sb in BALF of the high-risk PM2.5 inhalation group (p < 0.05). Sixteen PAHs were detected in 32 BALF samples. The main components of BALF and atmospheric PM2.5 were the high molecular weight PAHs, and the species and concentration of PAHs in BALF and atmospheric PM2.5 are highly consistent., Conclusion: The types and concentrations of inorganic elements and PAHs in BALF of COPD patients are highly consistent with those of atmospheric PM2.5. In this tutorial review, we will explore recent advances in the construction and application of Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based small-molecule fluorescent probes. The advantages of FRET-based fluorescent probes include: a large Stokes shift, ratiometric sensing and dual/multi-analyte responsive systems. We discuss the underlying energy donor-acceptor dye combinations and emphasise their applications for the detection or imaging of cations, anions, small neutral molecules, biomacromolecules, cellular microenvionments and dual/multi-analyte responsive systems.

Atmospheric amines contribute to the nucleation and initial growth of new particles as well as secondary organic aerosol formation, influencing the radiative balance of the Earth's atmosphere. In this study, we develop an ion chromatography (IC) method for separating and quantifying the nine most abundant amines (methylaminium (MMAH + ), dimethylaminium (DMAH + ), trimethylaminium (TMAH + ), ethylaminium (MEAH + ), diethylaminium (DEAH + ), propylaminium (MPAH + ), butylaminium (MBAH + ), ethanolaminium (MEOH + ), and triethanolaminium (TEOH + )) from six common inorganic species in atmospheric aerosols. The retention times of the amines were altered by the addition of acetonitrile to the eluent because acetonitrile can reduce the adsorption of hydrophobic amines on the stationary phase. The developed method achieved the successful separation of DEAH + and TMAH + from inorganic cations, which often coelute with each other in established IC methods. The interference of K + on the determination of MEAH + was eliminated by the complexation of K + with 18-crown-6, which prolonged the retention time of K + . Finally, 9 target amines and 6 common inorganic cations were separated, with a resolution Rs ≥ 1.2 for DEAH + and MPAH + and Rs > 1.5 for other species. The detection limits varied in the range of 0.34-1.48 ng for the 9 amines and 0.19-0.56 ng for the inorganic cations. The developed method was successfully applied for the determination of low molecular weight amines and inorganic cations in PM 2.5 collected from an urban site in Shanghai and an isolated coast of Chongming Island. Eight amines were detected in the urban samples, in which MMAH + and DMAH + dominated. We developed and validated a reliable, robust, and easy-to-implement quantitative method for multielemental analysis of low-volume samples. Our ICP-MS-based method comprises the analysis of 20 elements (Mg, P, S, K, Ca, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Se, Br, Rb, Sr, Mo, I, Cs, and Ba) in 10 μL of serum and 12 elements (Mg, S, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn Se, Br, Rb, Mo, and Cs) in less than 250 000 cells. As a proof-of-concept, we analyzed the elemental profiles of serum and sorted immune T cells derived from naı̈ve and tumor-bearing mice. The results indicate a tumor systemic effect on the elemental profiles of both serum and T cells. Our approach highlights promising applications of multielemental analysis in precious samples such as rare cell populations or limited volumes of biofluids that could provide a deeper understanding of the essential role of elements as cofactors in biological and pathological processes.

Inorganic nanoparticles as a versatile nanoplatform have been broadly applied in the diagnosis and treatment of cancers due to their inherent superior physicochemical properties (including magnetic, thermal, optical, and catalytic performance) and excellent functions (e.g., imaging, targeted delivery, and controlled release of drugs) through surface functional modification or ingredient dopant. However, in practical biological applications, inorganic nanomaterials are relatively difficult to degrade and excrete, which induces a long residence time in living organisms and thus may cause adverse effects, such as inflammation and tissue cysts. Therefore, the development of biodegradable inorganic nanomaterials is of great significance for their biomedical application. This Review will focus on the recent advances of degradable inorganic nanoparticles for cancer theranostics with highlight on the degradation mechanism, aiming to offer an in-depth understanding of degradation behavior and related biomedical applications. Finally, key challenges and guidelines will be discussed to explore biodegradable inorganic nanomaterials with minimized toxicity issues, facilitating their potential clinical translation in cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Several hemipteran species feed on the phloem sap of plants and produce large amounts of honeydew that is collected by bees to produce honeydew honey. Therefore, it is important to know whether it is predominantly the hemipteran species or the host plant to influence the honeydew composition. This is particularly relevant for those botanical and zoological species from which the majority of honeydew honey originates. To investigate this issue, honeydew from two Cinara species located on Abies alba as well as from two Cinara and two Physokermes species located on Picea abies were collected. Phloem exudates of the host plants were also analyzed. Honeydew of all species contained different proportions of hexoses, sucrose, melezitose, erlose, and further di- and trisaccharides, whereas the phloem exudates of the host trees contained no trisaccharides. Moreover, the proportions of sugars differed significantly between hemipteran species feeding on the same tree species. Sucrose hydrolysis and oligosaccharide formation was shown in whole-body homogenates of aphids. The type of the produced oligosaccharides in the aphid-extracts correlated with the oligosaccharide composition in the honeydew of the different aphid species. The total contents of amino acids and inorganic ions in the honeydew were much lower than the sugar content. Glutamine and glutamate were predominant amino acids in the honeydew of all six hemipteran species and also in the phloem exudates of both tree species. Potassium was the dominant inorganic ion in all honeydew samples and also in the phloem exudate. Statistical analyses reveal that the sugar composition of honeydew is determined more by the hemipteran species than by the host plant. Phosphorus (P) is a macronutrient for all microalgal species, and the main form of uptake is orthophosphate (PO 4 ). In this chapter we present a colorimetric method for determining the PO 4 concentration and dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) based on total phosphorus (TP) measurements. We also describe a method for determining particulate organic phosphorus (POP) based on the same principles.

Understanding the physicochemical characteristics of oil-based cuttings (OBCs) is an important foundation for subsequent treatment and management. The macro- and microscopic properties of white oil-based cuttings (WOBCs) and diesel-based cuttings (DBCs) after the different pretreatment steps have been assessed using scanning electron microscopy. The organic and inorganic compositions of OBCs have been analyzed using X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Inorganic matter (SiO 2 , BaSO 4 , and CaCO 3 ), alkanes, aromatic compounds, and water were the main components of OBCs. The organic content (26.14%) and alkane content of the WOBCs were higher than that of the DBCs, whereas for the inorganic content (70.87%), the reverse was true. The macro- and micromorphologies of OBCs were quite different because their oil and water contents were different. The oil contents of OBCs decreased in the order A1 (14.64%) > A3 (12.67%) > A2 (11.06%) and B1 (9.19%) > B3 (8.94%) > B2 (4.66%); the water contents decreased in the order A1 (2.99%) > A3 (2.19%) > A2 (1.09%) and B1 (2.30%) > B3 (1.87%) > B2 (1.09%). Moreover, a skid-mounted treatment technology for OBCs was proposed. The results can be a scientific guidance for the treatment and management of OBCs.

Nitrogen (N) is one of the key nutrients for algal growth and is an integral part of many cellular components, for example in proteins. Being able to determine the inorganic and organic pools of N is consequently critical for algal cultivation. In this chapter we present the methods we use for determining dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), and particulate organic nitrogen (PON). The methods presented here for DIN rely on colorimetric methods and those of DON and PON on filtration and high temperature catalytic oxidation.

Recent applications of capillary electrophoresis (CE) to the determination of various seawater analytes are critically examined, with the aim to reveal method's state-of-the-art and possible future research trends in the area. Given highly developed separation and detection methodology, emphasis is given to the most advantageous sample preconcentration strategies used to evolve the method's practical utility, particularly to low-level analytes. China continues to suffer from severe acid deposition, despite the government implying a series of policies to control air pollution. In this study, rainwater samples were collected from 2011 to 2016 in Sichuan province to measure the pH values and the concentrations of nine inorganic ions (SO 4 2- , NO 3 - , NH 4 + , Cl - , Na + , Ca 2+ , K + , Mg 2+ , and F - ), and then to investigate their spatiotemporal variations. Besides, the dominant sources for the acidic ions in the precipitation were also revealed by statistical model. The results showed that the rainwater continued to be highly acidic, and the Volume-Weighted Mean (VWM) pH value was calculated to be 5.18 during 2011 and 2016. NH 4 + , Ca 2+ , NO 3 - , and SO 4 2- were the dominant water-soluble inorganic ions, accounting for 79.2% of the total ions on average. The remarkable decrease in NO 3 - and SO 4 2- concentrations (from 75.9 to 54.3 μeq L -1 and from 285 to 145 μeq L -1 , respectively) resulted in an increase in the pH value of rainwater from 5.24 in 2011 to 5.70 in 2016. The concentrations of SO 4 2- , NO 3 - , F - , Na + , and K + showed remarkably seasonal variation, with the highest value observed in winter, followed by spring and autumn, and the lowest value observed in summer. High VWM concentration of these ions in winter were mainly due to adverse meteorological conditions (e.g., rare rainfall, lower planetary boundary height, and stagnant air) and intensive anthropogenic emissions. SO 4 2- , NO 3 - , and F - ions peaked in the southeastern Sichuan province, which is a typical industrial region. NH 4 + concentrations decreased from 268 μeq L -1 in the east to 10.4 μeq L -1 in the western Sichuan province, which could be related to the development of agriculture in the eastern Sichuan province. Ca 2+ peaked in southeastern Sichuan province due to intensive construction activities and severe stone desertification. On the basis of Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) analysis, four sources of inorganic ions in rainwater were identified, including anthropogenic source, crust, biomass burning, and aging sea salt aerosol. Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) was used to find the spatial correlations between the socio-economic factors and ions in the rainwater. This study has assessed the influence of the origin of air mass on levels of particulate matter (PM 10 ) and chemical composition (SO 4 2- and NO 3 - ) in the air basin of Madrid. A data set of back-trajectories of air mass arriving to this area of study from 15 June 15 2009 to 8 July 2011 has been analyzed. Firstly, the cluster analysis statistical method has been used to group the back-trajectories into 5 sets according to the angle, direction, and speed of the air mass. Afterwards, the synoptic meteorological scenarios associated with each cluster were obtained and interpreted. Subsequently, an analysis was made on the influence of these clusters on the surface levels of particulate pollutants recorded in a regional background station ("El Atazar"), as well as in two urban background stations ("Casa de Campo" and "CIEMAT"). Finally, potential source areas of PM 10 , SO 4 2- , and NO 3 - that contributed to the increase in their background levels in the Madrid air basin were detected by analyzing residence times of trajectories. Transport of mineral desert dust is probably the main cause of the increase of regional and urban background levels of PM 10 in the Madrid air basin. In the case of SO 4 2- , relatively high levels were registered, associated with air mass coming from Southern Europe and the Mediterranean Sea. In these regions, strong emissions of SO 4 2- are produced due to industrial combustion and maritime traffic. Otherwise, relatively high levels of NO 3 - were registered during meteorological situations defined by a low baric gradient in the Iberian Peninsula. This meteorological pattern favors the accumulation of emissions from local and regional sources. Besides, the main urban centers of northeastern Europe and industrial areas located in the north African coast were also identified as potential source areas of NO 3 - . The statistical analysis of the back-trajectories by different methods and the comparison of the results obtained with observational data confirmed that numerous industrial areas in Europe and North Africa, as well as natural ones, such as deserts, had an influence on the regional and urban background levels of mass and chemical composition of particulate matter in the Madrid air basin, under the development of specific synoptic meteorological situations. Water vapor is a pivotal obstacle when measuring ambient air pollutants. The effects of water vapor removal devices which are called KPASS (Key-compound PASSer) and Cooler. On the measurement of O 3 , SO 2 , and CO at ambient levels were investigated. Concentrations of O 3 , SO 2 , and CO were 100 ppb, 150 ppb, and 25 ppm, respectively. The amount of water vapor varied at different relative humidity levels of 30%, 50%, and 80% when the temperature was 25 °C and the pressure was 1 atm. Water vapor removal efficiencies and recovery rates of target gases were also determined. The KPASS showed a better performance than the Cooler device, removing 93.6% of water vapor and the Cooler removing 59.2%. In terms of recovery, the KPASS showed a better recovery of target gases than the Cooler. Consequently, it is suggested that the KPASS should be an alternative way to remove water vapor when measuring O 3 , SO 2 , and CO.

Hair incorporates chemical compounds from the bloodstream and external sources as it grows. Different analytical procedures are proposed, but no consensus can be found for external contamination removal (washing stage). Thus, a major limitation of the use of hair analysis for human biomonitoring is the issue related to the washing efficiency, and the objective of this study was to propose a simple washing method for a better cleaning of external contamination. Based on a sequence of three steps of detergent or acid washing (Triton, nitric acid, and hydrochloric acid), the TNCl method was tested on raw and spiked samples and compared to other methods. Thirty-seven inorganic elements were analyzed by inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) after washing and acid digestion of 10 hair samples (Li, Be, Na, Mg, Al, P, K, Ca, V, Cr, Fe, Mn, Co, N, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Sr, Mo, Ru, Ag, Cd, Sn, Sb, Cs, Ba, La, Ce, Nd, Gd, Lu, Tl, Pb, Bi, Th, and U). The inorganic element concentrations in the hair samples were compared to those reported in the literature. The TNCl method was shown to be more efficient than other methods based on the use of surfactants and organic solvents.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are toxic organic trace components in atmospheric aerosols that have impacts on climate and human health. They are bound to airborne particles and transported over long distances. Observations of their distribution, transport pathways, and degradation are crucial for risk assessment and mitigation. Such estimates would benefit from online detection of PAHs along with analysis of the carrying particles to identify the source. Typically, laser desorption/ionization (LDI) in a bipolar mass spectrometer reveals the inorganic constituents and provides limited molecular information. In contrast, two-step ionization approaches produce detailed PAH mass spectra from individual particles but without the source-specific inorganic composition. Here we report a new technique that yields the single-particle PAH composition along with both positive and negative inorganic ions via LDI. Thus, the complete particle characterization and source apportionment from conventional bipolar LDI-analysis becomes possible, combined with a detailed PAH spectrum for the same particle. The key idea of the method is spatiotemporal matching of the ionization laser pulse to the transient component distribution in the particle plume after laser desorption. The technique is robust and field-deployable with only slightly higher costs and complexity compared to two-step approaches. We demonstrate its capability to reveal the PAH-distribution on different particle types in combustion aerosols and ambient air.

The purpose of the study was to determine the maximum safe concentration of calcium and phosphate in neonatal parenteral nutrition (PN) solutions when various combinations of inorganic and organic salts are applied. Twelve PN solutions for neonatal use were aseptically prepared. Increasing concentrations of inorganic and organic calcium and phosphate were added to the standard formulas. Each admixture was separately tested according to the following conditions; after mixing, at 37 °C for 24 hr, and the maximum safe combination of calcium and phosphate were stored at 4 °C for 30 days and followed by 24 hr at 37 °C. Visual inspections and microscopic observation of undiluted PN solutions as well as the membrane filter after filtration of the PN solution, pH evaluation, and absorbance were examined. The safe maximum concentration of organic and inorganic calcium and phosphate were proposed individually for each composition of parenteral nutrition solutions. Surprisingly, organic calcium with organic phosphate showed precipitation but over the therapeutic range. The protective effect of amino acid was observed and higher concentrations of calcium and phosphate were free of precipitation. This work is valuable in daily practice as it allows an increase in the limits of calcium and phosphate in PN solutions for infants.

The element concentration in lettuces grouped in 5 categories (baby variety, cultivated in agricultural soils with low or high percentages of spent coffee grounds-SCG, without SCG and with NPK) were measured. Lettuces cultivated in agricultural soils amended with SCG had significantly higher levels of several essential (V, Fe, Co, V, and probably Mn and Zn) and toxic elements (Al and probably As), without reaching their toxicological limits. Additionally, blocking of N uptake and therefore plant biomass, and probably Cd absorption from agricultural soil was observed. Organic farming with SCG ameliorates element concentrations in lettuces vs. NPK fertilization. The linear correlations among element uptake and the amendment of SCG could be related with their chelation by some SCG components, such as melanoidins and with the decrease in the soil pH. The intermolecular interaction in difluoromethane, dichloromethane, dibromomethane, and diiodomethane dimers has been investigated using high level quantum chemical methods. The potential energy curve of intermolecular interaction along the C⋯C bond distance obtained using the coupled-cluster theory with singles, doubles, and perturbative triples excitations CCSD(T) were compared with values given by the same method, but applying the local (LCCSD(T)) and the explicitly correlated (CCSD(T)-F12) approximations. The accuracy of other theoretical methods-Hartree-Fock (HF), second order Møller-Plesset perturbation (MP2), and dispersion corrected DFT theory-were also presented. In the case of MP2 level, the canonical and the local-correlation cases combined with the density-fitting technique (DF-LMP2)theories were considered, while for the dispersion-corrected DFT, the empirically-corrected BLYP-D and the M06-2Xexchange-correlation functionals were applied. In all cases, the aug-cc-pVTZ basis set was used, and the results were corrected for the basis set superposition error (BSSE) using the counterpoise method. For each molecular system, several dimer geometries were found, and their mutual orientations were compared with the nearest neighbor orientations obtained in recent neutron scattering studies. The nature of the intermolecular interaction energy was discussed.

In order to obtain a well understanding of the toxicity and ecological effects of trace elements in the environment, it is necessary to determine not only the total amount, but also their existing species. Speciation analysis has become increasingly important in making risk assessments of toxic elements since the toxicity and bioavailability strongly depend on their chemical forms. Effective separation of different species in combination with highly sensitive detectors to quantify these particular species is indispensable to meet this requirement. In this paper, we present the recent progresses on the speciation analysis of trace arsenic, mercury, selenium and antimony in environmental and biological samples with an emphasis on the separation and detection techniques, especially the recent applications of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) hyphenated to atomic spectrometry or mass spectrometry.

Accurate and precise analyses of oil and gas (O&G) wastewaters and solids (e.g., sediments and sludge) are important for the regulatory monitoring of O&G development and tracing potential O&G contamination in the environment. In this study, 15 laboratories participated in an inter-laboratory comparison on the chemical characterization of three O&G wastewaters from the Appalachian Basin and four solids impacted by O&G development, with the goal of evaluating the quality of data and the accuracy of measurements for various analytes of concern. Using a variety of different methods, analytes in the wastewaters with high concentrations (i.e., >5 mg L-1) were easily detectable with relatively high accuracy, often within ±10% of the most probable value (MPV). In contrast, often less than 7 of the 15 labs were able to report detectable trace metal(loid) concentrations (i.e., Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, and Pb) with accuracies of approximately ±40%. Despite most labs using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) with low instrument detection capabilities for trace metal analyses, large dilution factors during sample preparation and low trace metal concentrations in the wastewaters limited the number of quantifiable determinations and likely influenced analytical accuracy. In contrast, all the labs measuring Ra in the wastewaters were able to report detectable concentrations using a variety of methods including gamma spectroscopy and wet chemical approaches following Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standard methods. However, the reported radium activities were often greater than ±30% different to the MPV possibly due to calibration inconsistencies among labs, radon leakage, or failing to correct for self-attenuation. Reported radium activities in solid materials had less variability (±20% from MPV) but accuracy could likely be improved by using certified radium standards and accounting for self-attenuation that results from matrix interferences or a density difference between the calibration standard and the unknown sample. This inter-laboratory comparison illustrates that numerous methods can be used to measure major cation, minor cation, and anion concentrations in O&G wastewaters with relatively high accuracy while trace metal(loid) and radioactivity analyses in liquids may often be over ±20% different from the MPV.

Multicomponent simultaneous analysis is important for management programs, which are required in beer industries because the beer constituents measure by combining several methods in the present. In response to a requirement, our research group developed single sample injection ion chromatography systems, which comprise ion-exclusion/cation-exchange chromatography (IEC/CEC) and post-column derivatization and show promise for simultaneously determining concentrations of organic and inorganic species and alcohol commonly found in beer. Optimal chromatographic resolutions for determining 17 different species in beer samples by IEC/CEC were obtained on a H + -formed weakly acidic cation-exchange resin column with an eluent comprising 2 mM phthalic acid and 1 mM 18-crown-6. Consequently, the usefulness of developed method for monitoring beer samples was demonstrated in terms of beneficial information such as dependency of K + concentration on the malt amount, influences of organic anion concentrations on different types of bottling methods, and validation of ethanol concentrations displayed in the ingredient table., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: Federal Region X is an administrative region in the northwestern United States comprised of the states of Alaska (AK), Idaho (ID), Oregon (OR), and Washington (WA). Quantifying the number of workers in this region exposed to harmful circumstances in the workplace, and projected changes over time will help to inform priorities for occupational health training, risk reduction, and research., Methods: State data for WA, ID, OR, and AK were used to estimate number of workers by occupation, in 2014 and 2024. These data were merged with a Canadian job-exposure matrix (CANJEM) which characterizes chemical exposures, and O*NET, which ranks occupations with particular physical, ergonomic, and psychosocial exposures., Results: Of the exposures considered, psychosocial and ergonomic exposures were the most prevalent among the regional workforce, though traditional chemical exposures are still common and increasing., Conclusions: Exposure surveillance will inform prioritization of risk reduction strategies, ultimately leading to a decrease in occupational injury and illness. Abuse of recreational drugs (i.e., synthetic chemicals with the structure or expected neurotropic effects, or both, similar to those of controlled substances) is a serious and continuous social harm. Designer drugs are often manufactured or synthesized in small-scale clandestine laboratories with impure starting materials, poor handling skills and inferior storage conditions. Therefore, in addition to the objective compound, diverse impurities may be present, for example, from the starting material, intermediates, catalytic metals formed during chemical synthesis, and materials from the environment. Impurity profiling of drug seizures is a useful scientific tool to obtain information on the clandestine manufacturers and drug trafficking networks. 1-Phenyl-2-(1-pyrrolidinyl)-1-pentanone (α-PVP), a novel psychoactive substance of the cathinone type that is banned in many countries, is still supplied and distributed within the illicit drug market. By using GC-MS and ICP-MS, we identified and estimated the relative contents of organic and inorganic impurities in the bulk powder of 15 batches of α-PVP. We then conducted multivariate data analyses to reveal characteristic patterns of the profiles. Hierarchical cluster analysis of both the organic and inorganic impurities revealed two groups that showed similar impurity profiles, which suggested that the batches in these groups were synthesized in similar routes under similar synthetic environments. The initial groups revealed by the organic impurities were further divided when combined with the data from the inorganic impurities. The present study, therefore, demonstrated the effectiveness of integrated analyses of organic and inorganic impurities for the accurate clustering of designer drugs, to provide precise information to drug investigation authorities.

The oral bioaccessibility of several essential and toxic elements was investigated in raw and cooked commercially available seafood species from European markets. Bioaccessibility varied between seafood species and elements. Methylmercury bioaccessibility varied between 10 (octopus) and 60% (monkfish). Arsenic (>64%) was the toxic element showing the highest bioaccessibility. Concerning essential elements bioaccessibility in raw seafood, selenium (73%) and iodine (71%) revealed the highest percentages. The bioaccessibility of elements in steamed products increased or decreased according to species. For example, methylmercury bioaccessibility decreased significantly after steaming in all species, while zinc bioaccessibility increased in fish (tuna and plaice) but decreased in molluscs (mussel and octopus). Together with human exposure assessment and risk characterization, this study could contribute to the establishment of new maximum permissible concentrations for toxic elements in seafood by the European food safety authorities, as well as recommended intakes for essential elements., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. With growing interest in exploring ocean worlds, such as Europa and Enceladus, there is a fundamental need to develop liquid-based analytical techniques capable of handling high salinity samples while performing both bulk and trace species measurements. In this context, CE with capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection (CE-C 4 D) has tremendous potential. One of its advantages is that this combination allows the detection of a wide number of charged species (both organic and inorganic) without the need of derivatization. Amino acids are an example of organic targets that are powerful biosignatures in the search for life beyond Earth. Simultaneous information on the inorganic cations in a sample helps with assessing the habitability of an extraterrestrial environment, as well as providing sample context for any measurements of trace amino acids. In this work, we present a series of flight-compatible methods capable of simultaneously measuring inorganic cations and amino acids in samples of varying salinity by CE-C 4 D. Regardless of the sample total salinity, 5.0 M acetic acid was selected as the optimum BGE. The methods were evaluated by analyzing natural samples of low and high salinity from Hot Creek Gorge, Mono Lake, and Santa Monica beach. Bivalve shells are inorganic-organic nanocomposites whose material properties outperform their purely inorganic mineral counterparts. Most typically the inorganic phase is a polymorph of CaCO 3 , while the organic phase contains biopolymers which have been presumed to be chitin and/or proteins. Identifying the biopolymer phase is therefore a crucial step in improving our understanding of design principles relevant to biominerals. In this work we study seven shells; four are examples of nacroprismatic shells (Alathyria jacksoni, Pinctada maxima, Hyriopsis cumingii and Cucumerunio novaehollandiae), one homogeneous (Arctica islandica), and two are crossed lamellar (Callista kingii, Tridacna gigas). Both intact shells, their organic extracts as isolated after decalcification in acid, and the periostracum overlay have been studied by solid-state CP-MAS NMR, FTIR, SEM and chemical analysis. In none of the shells examined in this work do we find a significant contribution to the organic fraction from chitin or its derivatives despite popular models of bivalve biomineralization which assume abundant chitin in the organic fraction of mollusk bivalve shells. In each of the nacroprismatic extracts the 13 C NMR spectra represent similar proteinaceous material, Ala and Gly-rich and primarily organized as β-sheets. A different, yet highly conserved protein was found in the periostracum covering each of the three nacreous shells studied. The Arctica islandica shells with homogeneous microstructure contained proteins which do not appear to be silk-like, while in the crossed lamellar shells we extracted too little organic matter to characterize. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Hydrophobic macromolecules are structural components within the calcareous inorganic matrix of bivalve shells and are responsible for enhanced materials properties of the biominerals. Prevalent models suggest that chitin is such major hydrophobic component. Contrary to that we show that chitin is rare within the hydrophobic biopolymers which primarily consist of proteinaceous matter with structural motifs as silk-like β-sheets, or others yet to be determined. Recognizing that diverse proteinaceous motifs, devoid of abundant chitin, can yield the optimized mechanical properties of bivalve shells is critical both to understand the mechanistic pathways by which they regulate biomineralization and for the design of novel bioinspired materials., (Copyright © 2018 Acta Materialia Inc. Organic and inorganic xenobiotic compounds can affect the potential ecological function of the soil, altering its biodiversity. Therefore, the response of microbial communities to environmental pollution is a critical issue in soil ecology. Here, a high-throughput sequencing approach was used to investigate the indigenous bacterial and fungal community structure as well as the impact of pollutants on their diversity and richness in contaminated and noncontaminated soils of a National Interest Priority Site of Campania Region (Italy) called "Terra dei Fuochi". The microbial populations shifted in the polluted soils via their mechanism of adaptation to contamination, establishing a new balance among prokaryotic and eukaryotic populations. Statistical analyses showed that the indigenous microbial communities were most strongly affected by contamination rather than by site of origin. Overabundant taxa and Actinobacteria were identified as sensitive biomarkers for assessing soil pollution and could provide general information on the health of the environment. This study has important implications for microbial ecology in contaminated environments, increasing our knowledge of the capacity of natural ecosystems to develop microbiota adapted to polluted soil in sites with high agricultural potential and providing a possible approach for modeling pollution indicators for bioremediation purposes.

Chromatographic analysis of orange and apple juices is provided using novel covalently-bonded poly(styrene-divinylbenzene)-based (PS-DVB) hyperbranched anion exchanger for suppressed ion chromatography (IC) with improved selectivity toward inorganic anions and organic acids. The obtained stationary phase provides baseline resolution of weakly retained organic acids such as glycolate, acetate, lactate, and formate, which are not separated to baseline with modern commercially available anion exchangers. Dual-mode optical assays are becoming more popular and attractive because they would provide robust detailed information in biochemical analysis. We herein unveil a novel dual-mode optical (i.e., UV-vis absorption and fluorescence) method for multifunctional sensing of phosphate compounds (PCs) (e.g., nucleotides and pyrophosphate) based on pattern recognition, which innovatively employs only one kind of porphyrin/lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (Ln-UCNPs) hybrid integrated with a facile pH-regulated strategy as the sensor array. An easy-to-obtain porphyrin hydrate (tetraphenylporphyrin tetrasulfonic acid hydrate, TPPS) can assemble onto the ligand-free Ln-UCNPs to construct the organic/inorganic hybrid (TPPS/Ln-UCNPs), leading to a new absorption band to quench the upconversion fluorescence of Ln-UCNPs due to fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). The dual-mode optical performances of TPPS/Ln-UCNPs are characteristically correlated with the pH in aqueous solution. Thus, as a proof-of-concept design, three types of TPPS/Ln-UCNPs (TPPS/Ln-UCNPs 4 , TPPS/Ln-UCNPs 4.5 , and TPPS/Ln-UCNPs 5 ) were prepared by using buffers with different pH (at 4, 4.5, and 5) to form our proposed sensor array, which would result in individual dual-mode optical response patterns upon being challenged with PCs for their pattern recognition through a competitive mechanism between TPPS and PCs. The results show that three TPPS/Ln-UCNPs n sensors can successfully permit the sensitive detection of 14 PCs and differentiate them between different concentrations, as well as a mixture of them. The pH-dependent TPPS/Ln-UCNPs promises the simple, yet powerful discrimination of PCs via pattern recognition, would prospectively stimulate and expand the use of organic/inorganic hybrid toward more biosensing applications.

Suaeda salsa is an annual euhalophytic herb that produces dimorphic seeds, such as small black seeds and big brown seeds. In the present study, the fatty acid composition, content of total phenols, flavonoids, carotenoid and inorganic ions in dimorphic seeds of the species collected in the field were measured. There was no significant difference in total oil content between black and brown seeds. Seed total oil content was approximately 19% based on dry weight. The most abundant fatty acid was linoleic acid, and the content was 76.3 and 70.5% of total fatty acids in black and brown seeds, respectively. Furthermore, the contents of total phenols, flavonoids, carotenoids and inorganic ions in brown seeds were higher than those in black seeds, which might be the mechanism of higher salt tolerance of brown seeds than black seeds. The ecological, physiological and genetic mechanisms of the different abilities of nutrition accumulation in black and brown seeds of S. salsa are also discussed and worthy to be investigated in the future., (Copyright © 2018. Humans accumulate large numbers of inorganic particles in their lungs over a lifetime. Whether this causes or contributes to debilitating disease over a normal lifespan depends on the type and concentration of the particles. We developed and tested a protocol for in situ characterization of the types and distribution of inorganic particles in biopsied lung tissue from three human groups using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) combined with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Many distinct particle types were recognized among the 13 000 particles analyzed. Silica, feldspars, clays, titanium dioxides, iron oxides and phosphates were the most common constituents in all samples. Particles were classified into three general groups: endogenous, which form naturally in the body; exogenic particles, natural earth materials; and anthropogenic particles, attributed to industrial sources. These in situ results were compared with those using conventional sodium hypochlorite tissue digestion and particle filtration. With the exception of clays and phosphates, the relative abundances of most common particle types were similar in both approaches. Nonetheless, the digestion/filtration method was determined to alter the texture and relative abundances of some particle types. SEM/EDS analysis of digestion filters could be automated in contrast to the more time intensive in situ analyses.

The aim was to investigate the effect of the Er-YAG laser radiation on morphology and chemical composition of enamel, dentin, and bone. The specimens of the three groups were irradiated with a very long pulse mode (VLP) of 2.94 µm Er-YAG laser with 100 mJ pulse energy and energy density of 8.42 J/ c m 2 for 30 s, at a repetition rate of 15 Hz. The organic and inorganic content of the samples were investigated by Fourier Transforms Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The morphological characteristics were investigated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and elemental analysis (calcium and phosphorus) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). FTIR data were analyzed with a One-Way ANCOVA test and EDX data with the independent sample t-test. Following the laser radiation, FTIR showed a significant decrease in the organic content of all tissues. The weight percentage (wt %) calcium content of dentin and bone increased significantly following irradiation with a p-value of .002 for both tissues, but the wt % of phosphorus content was not influenced significantly. A two dimensional ion chromatography (2D-IC) method was improved for the simultaneous determination of six cations and seven anions using one-valve switching after injection and conductivity detector. The trap conditions and valve-switch timing were optimized. The method has good accuracy and sensitivity for the simultaneous separation of inorganic anions and cations with a mean correlation coefficient of >0.99, repeatability of 0.60%-3.0% for eight replicates, reproducibility of 0.78%-3.1%, and spiked recovery rate of 88.7%-110%. The method was successfully applied to the analysis of inorganic anions and cations in four kinds of mineral water and can completely satisfy the demand of water quality monitoring., (Copyright © 2018. Assessing human exposures to chemicals in consumer products requires composition information. However, comprehensive composition data for products in commerce are not generally available. Many consumer products have reported ingredient lists that are constructed using specific guidelines. A probabilistic model was developed to estimate quantitative weight fraction (WF) values that are consistent with the rank of an ingredient in the list, the number of reported ingredients, and labeling rules. The model provides the mean, median, and 95% upper and lower confidence limit WFs for ingredients of any rank in lists of any length. WFs predicted by the model compared favorably with those reported on Material Safety Data Sheets. Predictions for chemicals known to provide specific functions in products were also found to reasonably agree with reported WFs. The model was applied to a selection of publicly available ingredient lists, thereby estimating WFs for 1293 unique ingredients in 1123 products in 81 product categories. Predicted WFs, although less precise than reported values, can be estimated for large numbers of product-chemical combinations and thus provide a useful source of data for high-throughput or screening-level exposure assessments.

Nanoparticles are being actively developed for biomolecular profiling of cancer biomarkers, tumor imaging in vivo, and targeted drug delivery. These nanotechnology-based techniques can be applied widely in the management of different malignant diseases, such as breast cancer. Although the number of different types of nanoparticles is increasing rapidly, most can be classified into two major types: particles that contain organic molecules as a major building material (such as dendrimers, micelles, liposomes and carbon nanotubes, and other polymers); and those that use inorganic elements, usually metals, as a core. In particular, inorganic nanoparticles have received increased attention in the recent past as potential diagnostic and therapeutic systems in the field of oncology. This review primarily discusses progress in applications of inorganic nanoparticles for breast cancer imaging and treatment.

In vitro assays act as surrogate measurements of relative bioavailability (RBA) for inorganic contaminants. The values derived from these assays are routinely used to refine human health risk assessments (HHRA). Extensive in vitro research has been performed on three major inorganic contaminants; As, Cd and Pb. However, the majority of these studies have evaluated the contaminants individually, even in cases when they are found as co-contaminants. Recently, in vivo studies (animal model) have determined that when the three aforementioned contaminants are present in the same soil matrix, they have the ability to influence each other's individual bioavailability. Since in vitro assays are used to inform HHRA, this study investigated whether bioaccessibility methods including the Solubility/Bioavailability Research Consortium (SBRC) assay, and physiologically based extraction test (PBET), have the ability to detect interactions between As, Cd and Pb. Using a similar dosing methodology to recently published in vivo studies, spiked aged (12 years) soil was assessed by evaluating contaminant bioaccessibility individually, in addition to tertiary combinations. In two spiked aged soils (grey and brown chromosols), there was no influence on contaminant bioaccessibility when As, Cd and Pb we present as co-contaminants. However, in a red ferrosol, the presence of As and Pb significantly decreased (p < 0.05) the bioaccessibility of Cd when assessed using gastric and intestinal phases of the SBRC assay and the PBET. Conceivable, differences in key physico-chemical properties (TOC, Fe, Al, P) between the study soils influenced contaminant interactions and bioaccessibility outcomes. Although bioaccessibility methods may not account for interactions between elements as demonstrated in in vivo models, in vitro assessment provides a conservative prediction of contaminant RBA under co-contaminant scenarios., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. An estimated 11 million people in the US have home wells with unsafe levels of hazardous metals and nitrate. The national scope of the health risk from consuming this water has not been assessed as home wells are largely unregulated and data on well water treatment and consumption are lacking. Here, we assessed health risks from consumption of contaminated well water on the Crow Reservation by conducting a community-engaged, cumulative risk assessment. Well water testing, surveys and interviews were used to collect data on contaminant concentrations, water treatment methods, well water consumption, and well and septic system protection and maintenance practices. Additive Hazard Index calculations show that the water in more than 39% of wells is unsafe due to uranium, manganese, nitrate, zinc and/or arsenic. Most families' financial resources are limited, and 95% of participants do not employ water treatment technologies. Despite widespread high total dissolved solids, poor taste and odor, 80% of families consume their well water. Lack of environmental health literacy about well water safety, pre-existing health conditions and limited environmental enforcement also contribute to vulnerability. Ensuring access to safe drinking water and providing accompanying education are urgent public health priorities for Crow and other rural US families with low environmental health literacy and limited financial resources., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.
