Abstract

Kagome metals have established a new arena for correlated electron physics. To date, the predominant experimental evidence centers around unconventional charge order, nematicity, and superconductivity, while magnetic fluctuations due to electronic interactions, i.e., beyond local atomic magnetism, have largely been elusive. From ab initio design and many-body analysis, we develop a model framework of Cu-based kagome materials the simulations of which reveal unconventional magnetic order in a kagome metal. We find the challenge of locating the appropriate parameter regime for such exotic order to center around two aspects. First, the correlations implied by low-energy orbitals have to be sufficiently large to yield a dominance of magnetic fluctuations and weak to retain an itinerant parent state. Second, the kinematic kagome profile at the Fermi level demands an efficient mitigation of sublattice interference causing the suppression of magnetic fluctuations descending from electronic onsite repulsion. We elucidate our methodology by analyzing the proposed compound CsCu$_3$Cl$_5$, assessing its feasibility for future material synthesis., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We argue that kagome metals can feature an excitonic condensate of unconventional nature. Studying the recently discovered variant ScV$_6$Sn$_6$, we identify electron and hole pockets due to a pair of van Hove singularities (vHS) close to the Fermi level, with an approximate spectral particle-hole symmetry at low energies. A significant fraction of the Fermi level density of states away from the vHS is removed by the onset of high temperature charge density wave order, and makes the bands more two dimensional, setting the stage for the formation of excitons. We develop a two-orbital minimal model which captures these features, along with the sublattice support of the wavefunctions, and find $s$-wave or $d$-wave excitons depending on the microscopic interaction parameters -- the latter of which exhibits either a charge nematic or time-reversal symmetry breaking flux order depending on strain, offering an explanation of recent STM and transport experiments. The appearance of particle-type and hole-type vHS, and the excitonic resonance associated with it, may be a common thread to understanding nematicity and time-reversal symmetry breaking in kagome metals., Comment: 4.5 + 3 pages, 5 + 4 figures

3. Pomeranchuk Instability Induced by an Emergent Higher-Order van Hove Singularity on the Distorted Kagome Surface of Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$

Abstract

Materials hosting flat bands at the vicinity of the Fermi level promote exotic symmetry broken states. Common to many of these are van Hove singularities at saddle points of the dispersion or even higher-order van Hove singularities where the dispersion is flattened further. The band structure of kagome metals hosts both a flat band and two regular saddle points flanking a Dirac node. We investigate the kagome ferromagnetic metal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ using scanning tunneling spectroscopy. We identify a new mechanism by which a triangular distortion on its kagome Co$_3$Sn surface termination considerably flattens the saddle point dispersion, and induces an isolated higher-order van Hove singularity (HOvHS) with algebraically divergent density of states pinned to the Fermi energy. The distortion-induced HOvHS precipitates a Pomeranchuk instability of the Fermi surface, resulting in the formation of a series of nematic electronic states. We visualize the nematic order across an energy shell of about 100 meV in both real-, reciprocal-, and momentum-spaces, as a cascade of wavefunction distributions which spontaneously break the remaining rotational symmetry of the underlying distorted kagome lattice, without generating any additional translational symmetry breaking. It signifies the spontaneous removal of a subset of saddle points from the Fermi energy to lower energies. By tracking the electronic wavefunction structure across the deformed Fermi surface we further identify a charge pumping-like evolution of the wavefunction center of mass. The mechanism we find for the generation of higher-order saddle points under a kagome distortion may be common to other kagome materials, and potentially other lattice structures, suggesting a generic new avenue for inducing unconventional electronic instabilities towards exotic states of matter.

4. A Pilot Randomised Control Trial Exploring the Feasibility and Acceptability of Delivering a Personalised Modular Psychological Intervention for Anxiety Experienced by Autistic Adults: Personalised Anxiety Treatment-Autism (PAT-A)

Abstract

Anxiety is commonly experienced by autistic people and impacts on quality of life and social participation. New anxiety interventions are required to effectively meet the needs of autistic people. Personalised Anxiety Treatment-Autism (PAT-A©) is a bespoke, modular approach to treating anxiety in up to 12 sessions. This study explored the feasibility and acceptability of delivering PAT-A© in the UK National Health Service (NHS). A single-blind randomised controlled trial design. Thirty-four autistic adults were recruited via clinical services and randomised to receive either PAT-A© or enhanced treatment as usual (CCSP). Outcome assessments relating to anxiety, quality of life and related constructs were completed at baseline, immediately post intervention; and at 3 and 12 months. Seventy-one percent of the PAT-A© group and 65% of the CCSP met diagnostic threshold for at least three anxiety disorders. Retention was good across both groups, with 82% (N = 14/17) completing the full course of PAT-A© and 71% (N = 12/17) attending both psychoeducational sessions in CCSP. 94% in PAT-A© and 82% in CCSP completed some follow up assessment 3 months post-intervention. Thematic analysis of interview data revealed that many participants valued the personalised approach, developed transferable skills and experienced positive changes to their anxiety. Participants were willing to be recruited and randomised, PAT-A© was feasible to deliver in the NHS and the trial methods and materials were acceptable. Our findings indicate that a fully powered clinical and cost-effectiveness trial of PAT-A© is warranted.

5. Electronic interactions in Dirac fluids visualized by nano-terahertz spacetime interference of electron-photon quasiparticles.

Abstract

Ultraclean graphene at charge neutrality hosts a quantum critical Dirac fluid of interacting electrons and holes. Interactions profoundly affect the charge dynamics of graphene, which is encoded in the properties of its electron-photon collective modes: surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Here, we show that polaritonic interference patterns are particularly well suited to unveil the interactions in Dirac fluids by tracking polaritonic interference in time at temporal scales commensurate with the electronic scattering. Spacetime SPP interference patterns recorded in terahertz (THz) frequency range provided unobstructed readouts of the group velocity and lifetime of polariton that can be directly mapped onto the electronic spectral weight and the relaxation rate. Our data uncovered prominent departures of the electron dynamics from the predictions of the conventional Fermi-liquid theory. The deviations are particularly strong when the densities of electrons and holes are approximately equal. The proposed spacetime imaging methodology can be broadly applied to probe the electrodynamics of quantum materials.

6. Topological superconductivity from repulsive interactions in twisted WSe$_2$

Abstract

The recent observation of superconductivity in twisted bilayer WSe$_2$ raises intriguing questions concerning the origin and the properties of superconducting states realized in bands with non-trivial topological properties and repulsive electron-electron interactions. Using a continuum band structure model, we analyze a mechanism for Coulomb interaction-driven superconductivity in twisted bilayers of WSe$_2$. We discuss the symmetries and the phenomenological properties of the resulting superconducting phases and their evolution with interlayer potential difference, tunable via an out of plane electric field. The pairing strength is a non-monotonic function of interlayer potential, being larger at intermediate values due to mixing of singlet and triplet pairing. In contrast, at larger interlayer potential, the pairing tendency is suppressed due to enhanced Coulomb repulsion. The superconducting state is chiral in a large regime of parameters and undergoes a transition to a nodal nematic superconductor at a critical potential difference. The chiral state, characterized by an intervalley-symmetric superposition of triplet and singlet pairs, is classified as a topological superconductor within the Altland-Zirnbauer class C. At zero interlayer potential difference, the superconducting state is instead of class D, which hosts Majorana zero modes, making it a promising candidate for applications in quantum computation., Comment: 9+11 pages, 4+9 figures

7. Measuring kinetic inductance and superfluid stiffness of two-dimensional superconductors using high-quality transmission-line resonators

Abstract

The discovery of van der Waals superconductors in recent years has generated a lot of excitement for their potentially novel pairing mechanisms. However, their typical atomic-scale thickness and micrometer-scale lateral dimensions impose severe challenges to investigations of pairing symmetry by conventional methods. In this report we demonstrate a new technique that employs high-quality-factor superconducting resonators to measure the kinetic inductance -- up to a part per million -- and loss of a van der Waals superconductor. We analyze the equivalent circuit model to extract the kinetic inductance, superfluid stiffness, penetration depth, and ratio of imaginary and real parts of the complex conductivity. We validate the technique by measuring aluminum and finding excellent agreement in both the zero-temperature superconducting gap as well as the complex conductivity data when compared with BCS theory. We then demonstrate the utility of the technique by measuring the kinetic inductance of multi-layered niobium diselenide and discuss the limits to the accuracy of our technique when the transition temperature of the sample, NbSe$_2$ at 7.06 K, approaches our Nb probe resonator at 8.59 K. Our method will be useful for practitioners in the growing fields of superconducting physics, materials science, and quantum sensing, as a means of characterizing superconducting circuit components and studying pairing mechanisms of the novel superconducting states which arise in layered 2D materials and heterostructures., Comment: 17 pages, 4 tables, 17 figures

Abstract

Novel states of matter arise in quantum materials due to strong interactions among electrons. A nematic phase breaks the point group symmetry of the crystal lattice and is known to emerge in correlated materials. Here we report the observation of an intra-unit-cell nematic order and signatures of Pomeranchuk instability in the Kagome metal ScV6Sn6. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we reveal a stripe-like nematic order breaking the crystal rotational symmetry within the Kagome lattice itself. Moreover, we identify a set of van Hove singularities adhering to the Kagome layer electrons, which appear along one direction of the Brillouin zone while being annihilated along other high-symmetry directions, revealing a rotational symmetry breaking. Via detailed spectroscopic maps, we further observe an elliptical deformation of Fermi surface, which provides direct evidence for an electronically mediated nematic order. Our work not only bridges the gap between electronic nematicity and Kagome physics, but also sheds light on the potential mechanism for realizing symmetry-broken phases in correlated electron systems., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) is an established palliative treatment for drug resistant epilepsy. While effective for many patients, its mechanism of action is incompletely understood. Predicting individuals' response, or optimum stimulation parameters, is challenging. Computational modelling has informed other problems in epilepsy but, to our knowledge, has not been applied to VNS. We started with an established, four-population neural mass model (NMM), capable of reproducing the seizure-like dynamics of a thalamocortical circuit. We extended this to include 18 further neural populations, representing nine other brain regions relevant to VNS, with connectivity based on existing literature. We modelled stimulated afferent vagal fibres as projecting to the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), which receives input from the vagus nerve in vivo. Bifurcation analysis of a deterministic version of the model showed higher background NTS input made the model monostable at a fixed point (FP), representing normal activity, while lower inputs produce bistability between the FP and a limit cycle (LC), representing the seizure state. Adding noise produced transitions between seizure and normal states. This stochastic model spent decreasing time in the seizure state with increasing background NTS input, until seizures were abolished, consistent with the deterministic model. Simulated VNS stimulation, modelled as a 30 Hz square wave, was summed with the background input to the NTS and was found to reduce total seizure duration in a dose-dependent manner, similar to expectations in vivo. We have successfully produced an in silico model of VNS in epilepsy, capturing behaviour seen in vivo. This may aid understanding therapeutic mechanisms of VNS in epilepsy and provides a starting point to (i) determine which patients might respond best to VNS, and (ii) optimise individuals' treatments.

Abstract

The text in the profile of those offering their properties in England in English and in Germany in German, are compared to explore whether trust is built, and privacy concerns are reduced in the same way. Six methods of building trust are used by the landlords: (1) the level of formality, (2) distance and proximity, (3) emotiveness and humor, (4) being assertive and passive aggressive, (5) conformity to the platform language style and terminology and (6) setting boundaries. Privacy concerns are not usually reduced directly as this is left to the platform. The findings indicate that language has a limited influence and the platform norms and habits are the biggest influence.

Abstract

Abstract Pork is currently a major part of Danish food export and is also a key dietary source of protein across the world. Industrial pork production, however, comes with high antibiotic usage in many countries, including Denmark. This has created consumer demand for meat Raised Without Antibiotics (RWA). Previous work has demonstrated that levels of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are indeed increased in antibiotically treated animals, but also suggest that these ARGs are transferred to untreated pen-mates. In a Danish commercial farm, we studied four groups of physically separated pigs: one group of only antibiotic treated pigs (n = 20), one group of only untreated pigs (n = 30 total, n = 15 analysed), and one group combining treated (n = 15) and untreated pigs (n = 15). These groups were followed for 16 weeks during which all pigs were profiled for both their faecal microbiome (through 16 S rRNA gene sequencing) and resistome (by use of a high-throughput qPCR platform targeting 82 ARGs and their variants). We found that the resistome of treated pigs was substantially enriched in resistance genes compared to untreated pigs but, importantly, observed that untreated pigs co-reared with treated pigs had levels of resistance genes approaching their treated pen mates, suggesting that the treated enterotype is readily transferred to the untreated animal. From this, we conclude that mixing of treated and untreated pigs causes spill-over of antibiotic resistant bacteria and/or resistance genes from treated pigs when these are co-reared. To optimize RWA production, treated and untreated pigs should be physically separated to limit the proliferation of ARGs.

25. Providing Quality Improvement Workplace-Based Professional Development to Australian General Practice Clinical Educators: Findings from a Feasibility Study

Abstract

In Australia, doctors undertaking advanced training to become general practitioners work under the supervision of clinical educators. Primarily clinicians, these clinical educators participate in one day of teaching-related professional development annually, generally a workshop. Shortcomings with this form of professional development led to the development of a quality improvement focused intervention that is facilitated in the workplace and based on the clinical educator's self-identified concerns. Drawing on teacher action research and feasibility study methodologies we explored this novel form of professional development by asking 'Can this intervention work?' We employed an embedded multiple case study design, trialling the intervention in four settings. The intervention's constituent activities were acceptable to participants; including a preparedness to experience discomfort for the purpose of improving their teaching practices. They perceived the intervention as convenient and the workload manageable. Participants were motivated to experiment with new teaching behaviours, but measuring outcomes was challenging. Medical educators facilitating the intervention perceived their tasks as cognitively 'hard work'. The findings provide support for this workplace-based intervention as a feasible form of professional development, which should be implemented on a larger scale and evaluated for impact.

26. Quadratic Dirac fermions and the competition of ordered states in twisted bilayer graphene

Abstract

Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) exhibits a captivating phase diagram as a function of doping, featuring superconductivity and a variety of insulating and magnetic states. The bands host Dirac fermions with a reduced Fermi velocity; experiments have shown that the Dirac dispersion reappears near integer fillings of the moir\'e unit cell -- referred to as the $\textit{Dirac revival}$ phenomenon. The reduced velocity of these Dirac states leads us to propose a scenario in which the Dirac fermions possess an approximately quadratic dispersion. The quadratic momentum dependence and particle-hole degeneracy at the Dirac point results in a logarithmic enhancement of interaction effects, which does not appear for a linear dispersion. The resulting non-trivial renormalisation group (RG) flow naturally produces the qualitative phase diagram as a function of doping -- with nematic and insulating states near integer fillings, which give way to superconducting states past a critical relative doping. The RG method further produces different results to strong-coupling Hartree-Fock treatments: producing T-IVC insulating states for repulsive interactions, explaining the results of very recent STM experiments, alongside nodal $A_2$ superconductivity near half-filling, whose properties explain puzzles in tunnelling studies of the superconducting state. The model explains a diverse range of additional experimental observations, unifying many aspects of the phase diagram of TBG.

36. CVB: A Video Dataset of Cattle Visual Behaviors

Abstract

Existing image/video datasets for cattle behavior recognition are mostly small, lack well-defined labels, or are collected in unrealistic controlled environments. This limits the utility of machine learning (ML) models learned from them. Therefore, we introduce a new dataset, called Cattle Visual Behaviors (CVB), that consists of 502 video clips, each fifteen seconds long, captured in natural lighting conditions, and annotated with eleven visually perceptible behaviors of grazing cattle. We use the Computer Vision Annotation Tool (CVAT) to collect our annotations. To make the procedure more efficient, we perform an initial detection and tracking of cattle in the videos using appropriate pre-trained models. The results are corrected by domain experts along with cattle behavior labeling in CVAT. The pre-hoc detection and tracking step significantly reduces the manual annotation time and effort. Moreover, we convert CVB to the atomic visual action (AVA) format and train and evaluate the popular SlowFast action recognition model on it. The associated preliminary results confirm that we can localize the cattle and recognize their frequently occurring behaviors with confidence. 37. Non-Medical Switching or Discontinuation Patterns among Patients with Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation Treated with Direct Oral Anticoagulants in the United States: A Claims-Based Analysis

Abstract

This study assessed direct-acting oral anticoagulant (DOAC) switching/discontinuation patterns in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) in 2019, by quarter (Q1–Q4), and associated socioeconomic risk factors. Adults with NVAF initiating stable DOAC treatment (July 2018–December 2018) were selected from Symphony Health Solutions’ Patient Transactional Datasets (April 2017–January 2021). Switching/discontinuation rates were reported in 2019 Q1–Q4, separately. Non-medical switching/discontinuation (NMSD) was defined as the difference between switching/discontinuation rates in Q1 and mean rates across Q2–Q4. The associations of socioeconomic factors with switching/discontinuation were assessed. Of 46,793 patients (78.7% ≥ 65 years; 52.6% male; 7.7% Black), 18.0% switched/discontinued their initial DOAC in Q1 vs. 8.8% on average in Q2–Q4, corresponding to an NMSD of 9.2%. During the quarter following the switch/discontinuation, more patients who switched/discontinued in Q1 remained untreated (Q1: 77.0%; Q2: 74.3%; Q3: 71.2%) and fewer reinitiated initial DOAC (Q1: 17.6%; Q2: 20.8%; Q3: 24.0%). Factors associated with the risk of switching/discontinuation in Q1 were race, age, gender, insurance type, and household income (all p < 0.05). More patients with NVAF switched/discontinued DOACs in Q1 vs. Q2–Q4, and more of them tended to remain untreated relative to those who switched/discontinued later in the year, suggesting a potential long-term impact of NMSD. Findings on factors associated with switching/discontinuation highlight potential socioeconomic discrepancies in treatment continuity.

Abstract Background Element-equivalent matched theranostic pairs facilitate quantitative in vivo imaging to establish pharmacokinetics and dosimetry estimates in the development of preclinical radiopharmaceuticals. Terbium radionuclides have significant potential as matched theranostic pairs for multipurpose applications in nuclear medicine. In particular, 155Tb (t1/2 = 5.32 d) and 161Tb (t1/2 = 6.89 d) have been proposed as a theranostic pair for their respective applications in single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging and targeted beta therapy. Our study assessed the performance of preclinical quantitative SPECT imaging with 155Tb and 161Tb. A hot rod resolution phantom with rod diameters ranging between 0.85 and 1.70 mm was filled with either 155Tb (21.8 ± 1.7 MBq/mL) or 161Tb (23.6 ± 1.9 MBq/mL) and scanned with the VECTor preclinical SPECT/CT scanner. Image performance was evaluated with two collimators: a high energy ultra high resolution (HEUHR) collimator and an extra ultra high sensitivity (UHS) collimator. SPECT images were reconstructed from photopeaks at 43.0 keV, 86.6 keV, and 105.3 keV for 155Tb and 48.9 keV and 74.6 keV for 161Tb. Quantitative SPECT images of the resolution phantoms were analyzed to report inter-rod contrast, recovery coefficients, and contrast-to-noise metrics. Results Quantitative SPECT images of the resolution phantom established that the HEUHR collimator resolved all rods for 155Tb and 161Tb, and the UHS collimator resolved rods ≥ 1.10 mm for 161Tb and ≥ 1.30 mm for 155Tb. The HEUHR collimator maintained better quantitative accuracy than the UHS collimator with recovery coefficients up to 92%. Contrast-to-noise metrics were also superior with the HEUHR collimator. Abstract

Abstract Malaria remains one of the highest causes of morbidity and mortality, with 249 million cases and over 608,000 deaths in 2022. Insecticides, which target the Anopheles mosquito vector, are the primary method to control malaria. The widespread nature of resistance to the most important insecticide class, the pyrethroids, threatens the control of this disease. To reverse the stall in malaria control there is urgent need for new vector control tools, which necessitates understanding the molecular basis of pyrethroid resistance. In this study we utilised multi-omics data to identify uridine-diphosphate (UDP)-glycosyltransferases (UGTs) potentially involved in resistance across multiple Anopheles species. Phylogenetic analysis identifies sequence similarities between Anopheline UGTs and those involved in agricultural pesticide resistance to pyrethroids, pyrroles and spinosyns. Expression of five UGTs was characterised in An. gambiae and An. coluzzii to determine constitutive over-expression, induction, and tissue specificity. Furthermore, a UGT inhibitor, sulfinpyrazone, restored susceptibility to pyrethroids and DDT in An. gambiae, An. coluzzii, An. arabiensis and An. funestus, the major African malaria vectors. Taken together, this study provides clear association of UGTs with pyrethroid resistance as well as highlighting the potential use of sulfinpyrazone as a novel synergist for vector control.

Abstract

Introduction Depression is three to four times more prevalent in autistic people and is related to reduced quality of life. There is a need for empirically supported psychological interventions for depression specifically adapted to meet the needs of autistic adults. ADEPT-2 aims to establish the clinical and cost-effectiveness of an adapted low-intensity psychological intervention (guided self-help) for depression in autistic adults.Methods and analysis A two parallel-group multicentre pragmatic randomised controlled trial investigating the effectiveness of GSH for depression in autistic adults. Participants (n=248) aged ≥18 years with a clinical diagnosis of autism currently experiencing depression will be randomised to GSH or treatment as usual (TAU). GSH is a low-intensity psychological intervention based on the principles of behavioural activation adapted for autism. GSH comprises informational materials for nine individual sessions facilitated online by a GSH coach who has received training and supervision in delivering the intervention. The primary outcome will be Beck Depression Inventory-II depression scores at 16 weeks post randomisation with follow-up measures at 32 and 52 weeks. Additional measures of anxiety, patient-rated global improvement, quality of life, work and social adjustment, positive and negative affect will be measured 16 and 52 weeks post randomisation. The primary health economic analysis will assess the cost-effectiveness of GSH compared with TAU over 52 weeks, from a societal perspective including the National Health Service, personal social services, personal expenses, voluntary services and productivity. An embedded qualitative study will explore the acceptability, experiences and adherence of participants and therapists to treatment principles.Ethics and dissemination This trial has been approved by the East of England - Essex Research Ethics Committee on 10 June 2022 (REC Reference number: 22/EE/0091). The findings of the research will be submitted for publication in peer-reviewed journals and disseminated in an appropriate format to trial participants and the wider public.Trial registration number ISRCTN17547011.

Abstract

Interstellar objects (ISOs) represent a compelling and under-explored category of celestial bodies, providing physical laboratories to understand the formation of our solar system and probe the composition and properties of material formed in exoplanetary systems. In this work, we investigate existing approaches to designing successful flyby missions to ISOs, including a deep learning-driven guidance and control algorithm for ISOs traveling at velocities over 60 km/s. We have generated spacecraft trajectories to a series of synthetic representative ISOs, simulating a ground campaign to observe the target and resolve its state, thereby determining the cruise and close approach delta-Vs required for the encounter. We discuss the accessibility of and mission design to ISOs with varying characteristics, with special focuses on 1) state covariance estimation throughout the cruise, 2) handoffs from traditional navigation approaches to novel autonomous navigation for fast flyby regimes, and 3) overall recommendations about preparing for the future in situ exploration of these targets. 46. Estrogenic endocrine disruptor exposure directly impacts erectile function

Abstract

Abstract Erectile dysfunction (ED) is an extremely prevalent condition which significantly impacts quality of life. The rapid increase of ED in recent decades suggests the existence of unidentified environmental risk factors contributing to this condition. Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) are one likely candidate, given that development and function of the erectile tissues are hormonally dependent. We use the estrogenic-EDC diethylstilbestrol (DES) to model how widespread estrogenic-EDC exposure may impact erectile function in humans. Here we show that male mice chronically exposed to DES exhibit abnormal contractility of the erectile tissue, indicative of ED. The treatment did not affect systemic testosterone production yet significantly increased estrogen receptor α (Esr1) expression in the primary erectile tissue, suggesting EDCs directly impact erectile function. In response, we isolated the erectile tissue from mice and briefly incubated them with the estrogenic-EDCs DES or genistein (a phytoestrogen). These acute-direct exposures similarly caused a significant reduction in erectile tissue contractility, again indicative of ED. Overall, these findings demonstrate a direct link between estrogenic EDCs and erectile dysfunction and show that both chronic and acute estrogenic exposures are likely risk factors for this condition.

Abstract

Interstellar objects (ISOs) are likely representatives of primitive materials invaluable in understanding exoplanetary star systems. Due to their poorly constrained orbits with generally high inclinations and relative velocities, however, exploring ISOs with conventional human-in-the-loop approaches is significantly challenging. This paper presents Neural-Rendezvous -- a deep learning-based guidance and control framework for encountering fast-moving objects, including ISOs, robustly, accurately, and autonomously in real time. It uses pointwise minimum norm tracking control on top of a guidance policy modeled by a spectrally-normalized deep neural network, where its hyperparameters are tuned with a loss function directly penalizing the MPC state trajectory tracking error. We show that Neural-Rendezvous provides a high probability exponential bound on the expected spacecraft delivery error, the proof of which leverages stochastic incremental stability analysis. In particular, it is used to construct a non-negative function with a supermartingale property, explicitly accounting for the ISO state uncertainty and the local nature of nonlinear state estimation guarantees. In numerical simulations, Neural-Rendezvous is demonstrated to satisfy the expected error bound for 100 ISO candidates.
