Abstract: International audience; Over the last decades, microwave heating has experienced a great development and reached various domains of application, especially in material processing. In the field of polymers, this unusual source of energy showed important advantages arising from the direct microwave/matter interaction. Indeed, microwave heating allows regio-, chemio-, and stereo-selectivity, faster chemical reactions, and higher yields even in solvent-free processes. Thus, this heating mode provides a good alternative to the conventional heating by reducing time and energy consumption, hence reducing the costs and ecological impact of polymer chemistry and processing. This review states some achievements in the use of microwaves as energy source during the synthesis and transformation of polymers. Both in-solution and free-solvent processes are described at different scales, with comparison between microwave and conventional heating.

Abstract: International audience; This work focuses on the impact of sulfonated Poly(Ether Ether Ketone) (sPEEK) membrane pretreatments on fuel cell performance, starting from two different batches of Fumapem E730 from Fumatech, acquired in 2019 and in 2020. sPEEK membranes are possible lower cost alternatives to PerFluoroSulfonic Acid (PFSA) membranes for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) applications. Before use, they must be pretreated to ensure a complete protonic substitution and removal of residual reagents/solvent: the simplest protocol consists in soaking the membrane in an acid solution followed by a rinsing step in water. In addition to this acidification step, hydrothermal (HT) treatments in water at high temperature for a few hours to a few days were also considered herein, as well as a hydro-alcoholic (HA) step, because of their expected effects on membrane nanostructure. Overall, four different protocols were used. The membrane water uptake, water self-diffusion, proton conductivity, and fuel cell performance-under H2/O2-were measured. It was found that in the best case-membranes from the 2020 batch subjected to HA followed by 72 hours HT pretreatments-the fuel cell performances exceeded those obtained with a PFSA membrane (Nafion XL). This is explained by a higher protonic conductivity, probably resulting from a better sPEEK nano-structuration.

Abstract: International audience; The efficient capture of CO2 from flue gas ordirectly from the atmosphere is a key subject to mitigate globalwarming, with several chemical and physical absorption methodspreviously reported. Through polarizable molecular dynamics(MD) simulations and high-level quantum chemical (QC)calculations, the physical and chemical absorption of CO2 byionic liquids based on imidazolium cations bearing oxirane groupswas investigated. The ability of the imidazolium group to absorbCO2 was found to be prevalent in both the tri- and tetraepoxidizedimidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) with coordination numbers over 2for CO2 within the first solvation shell in both systems.Thermodynamic analysis of the addition of CO2 to convertepoxy groups to cyclic carbonates also indicated that the overall reaction is exergonic for all systems tested, allowing for chemicalabsorption of CO2 to also be favored. The rate-determining step of the chemical absorption involved the initial opening of the epoxyring through addition of the chloride anion and was seen to vary greatly between the epoxy groups tested. Among the groups tested,the less sterically hindered monoepoxy side of the triepoxidized imidazolium was shown to be uniquely capable of undergoingintramolecular hydrogen bonding and thus lowering the barrier required for the intermediate structure to form during the reaction.Overall, this theoretical investigation highlights the potential for epoxidized imidazolium chloride ionic liquids for simultaneouschemical and physical absorption of CO2.

Abstract: The ileal lesions of Crohn’s disease (CD) patients are colonized by adherent-invasive Escherichia coli (AIEC) bacteria. These bacteria adhere to mannose residues expressed by CEACAM6 on host cells in a type 1 pilus-dependent manner. In this study, we investigated different antagonists of FimH, the adhesin of type 1 pili, for their ability to block AIEC adhesion to intestinal epithelial cells (IEC). Monovalent and multivalent derivatives of n-heptyl α-d-mannoside (HM), a nanomolar antagonist of FimH, were tested in vitro in IEC infected with the AIEC LF82 strain and in vivo by oral administration to CEACAM6-expressing mice infected with LF82 bacteria. In vitro, multivalent derivatives were more potent than the monovalent derivatives, with a gain of efficacy superior to their valencies, probably owing to their ability to form bacterial aggregates. Of note, HM and the multi-HM glycoconjugates exhibited lower efficacy in vivo in decreasing LF82 gut colonization. Interestingly, HM analogues functionalized with an isopropylamide (1A-HM) or β-cyclodextrin pharmacophore at the end of the heptyl tail (1CD-HM) exerted beneficial effects in vivo. These two compounds strongly decreased the amount of LF82 bacteria in the feces of mice and that of bacteria associated with the gut mucosa when administered orally at a dose of 10 mg/kg of body weight after infection. Importantly, signs of colitis and intestinal inflammation induced by LF82 infection were also prevented. These results highlight the potential of the antiadhesive compounds to treat CD patients abnormally colonized by AIEC bacteria and point to an alternative to the current approach focusing on blocking proinflammatory mediators., IMPORTANCE Current treatments for Crohn’s disease (CD), including immunosuppressive agents, anti-tumor necrosis factor alpha (anti-TNF-α) and anti-integrin antibodies, focus on the symptoms but not on the cause of the disease. Adherent-invasive Escherichia coli (AIEC) bacteria abnormally colonize the ileal mucosa of CD patients via the interaction of the mannose-specific adhesin FimH of type 1 pili with CEACAM6 mannosylated proteins expressed on the epithelial cell surface. Thus, we decided to develop an antiadhesive strategy based on synthetic FimH antagonists specifically targeting AIEC bacteria that would decrease intestinal inflammation. Heptylmannoside (HM)-based glycocompounds strongly inhibit AIEC adhesion to intestinal epithelial cells in vitro. The antiadhesive effect of two of these compounds of relatively simple chemical structure was also observed in vivo in AIEC-infected CEACAM6-expressing mice and was associated with a reduction in the signs of colitis. These results suggest a new therapeutic approach for CD patients colonized by AIEC bacteria, based on the development of synthetic FimH antagonists.

Abstract: International audience; Oral administration of nanoparticles (NPs) is a promising strategy to overcome solubility and stability issues of many active compounds. However, this route faces major obstacles related to the hostile gastrointestinal (GI) environment, which impairs the efficacy of orally administered nanomedicines. Here, we propose nanocomposites as a promising approach to increase the retention time of NPs in the intestinal tract by using bio-and mucoadhesive matrixes able to protect the cargo until it reaches the targeted area. A microfluidic-based approach has been applied for the production of tailored nanoemulsions (NEs) of about 110 nm, used for the encapsulation of small hydrophobic drugs such as the antiinflammatory JAK-inhibitor tofacitinib. These NEs proved to be efficiently internalized into a mucus-secreting human intestinal monolayer of Caco-2/ HT29-MTX cells and to deliver tofacitinib to subepithelial human THP-1 macrophage-like cells, reducing their inflammatory response. NEs were then successfully encapsulated into alginate hydrogel microbeads of around 300 μm, which were characterized by rheological experiments and dried to create a long-term stable system for pharmaceutical applications. Finally, ex vivo experiments on excised segments of rats′ intestine proved the bioadhesive ability of NEs embedded in alginate hydrogels compared to free NEs, showing the advantage that this hybrid system can offer for the treatment of intestinal pathologies.

Abstract: International audience; The wet spinning of cytocompatible, bioresorbable, and knittable chitosan (CTS) monofilaments would be advantageous for a variety of surgical applications. The complexation capacity of chitosan with Cu2+ or Zn2+ can be leveraged to enhance its antibacterial activity, but not at the expense of cytocompatibility. In this work, a wet-spinning process was adapted for the in situ incorporation of Cu2+ or Zn2+ with chitosan dopes to produce monofilaments at different drawing ratios (τtot) with various cation/glucosamine molar ratios, evaluated in the fibers (rCu,f and rZn,f). Cytocompatibility and antibacterial activity of wet-spun monofilaments were, respectively, quantified by in vitro live-dead assays on balb 3T3 and by different evaluations of the proliferation inhibition of Staphylococcus epidermidis (Gram+) and Escherichia coli (Gram−). Knittability was tested by a specific tensile test using a knitting needle and evaluated with an industrial knitting machine. It was found that rCu,f = 0.01 and rZn,f = 0.03 significantly increase the antibacterial activity without compromising cytocompatibility. Wet spinning with τtot = 1.6 allowed the production of knittable CTS-Cu monofilaments, as confirmed by knitting assays under industrial conditions.

Abstract: International audience; This work focuses on the non-destructive evaluation of the bonding quality in different metal/adhesive/composite samples and on the detection of defects simulating a kissing bond, using Shear Horizontal (SH) guided waves. A predictive 2D numerical model, called interphases model and based on finite elements method describing the interface substrate/adhesive by a very thin layer, is developed. Various samples with different adhesion levels obtained by modifying the cohesive and adhesive aspects or including a defect representing a kissing bond are investigated. An experimental study is performed with non-contact ElectroMagnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMAT) in excitation and reception. As the wavenumber-frequency sensitive SH modes to the adhesion quality shown by the numerical predictions are not easy to generate experimentally, the analysis of the behaviour of the SH modes is based here on their amplitude. Results show that it is possible to differentiate between the adhesion levels due to different epoxy conversion, the presence or absence of an adhesion promoter or a pollution by a release agent, as well as the detection of the defect.

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this study is to use the Freeform Reversible Embedding of Suspended Hydrogels (FRESH) additive manufacturing (AM) technique for manufacturing a liver phantom which can mimic the corresponding soft living tissue. One of the possible applications is surgical planning. Design/methodology/approach A thermo-reversible Pluronic® F-127-based support bath is used for the FRESH technique. To verify how three-dimensional (3D)-printed new materials can mimic liver tissue, dynamic mechanical analysis and oscillation shear rheometry tests are carried out to identify mechanical characteristics of different 3D printed silicone samples. Additionally, the differential scanning calorimetry was done on the silicone samples. Then, a validation of a 3D printed silicone liver phantom is performed with a 3D scanner. Finally, the surface topography of the 3D printed liver phantom was fulfiled and microscopy analysis of its surface. Findings Silicone samples were able to mimic the liver, therefore obtaining the first soft phantom of the liver using the FRESH technique. Practical implications Because of the use of soft silicones, surgeons could practice over these improved phantoms which have an unprecedented degree of living tissue mimicking, enhancing their rehearsal experience before surgery. Social implications An improvement in surgeons surgery skills would lead to a bettering in the patient outcome. Originality/value The first research study was carried out to mimic soft tissue and apply it to the 3D printing of organ phantoms using AM FRESH technique.

Abstract: International audience; Discovered by Baekeland a century ago, phenolic resins are still widely used today with a global production of about 12 million tons/year. Typically, these resins contain residual free formaldehyde, which is highly toxic and carcinogenic and will soon be banned by the European REACh regulation. Consequently, phenolic resins must be substituted. These resins are extensively used as a char precursor for composite-based thermal protection systems. Commonly, urea is a widely used formaldehyde scavenger and can be added to phenolic resins to decrease their free formaldehyde content, but urea is not suitable for high-temperature applications. Thus, an easy-to-implement method was developed with an aminophenol, giving access to a noncarcinogenic resin while maintaining the thermomechanical properties. The chemistry and the reaction mechanism of aminophenols with formaldehyde were also studied. Abstract: The role of the polymer volume fraction, $\phi$, on steady state slippage and interfacial friction is investigated for a semi-dilute polystyrene solutions in diethyl phthalate in contact with two solid surfaces. Signicant slippage is evidenced for all samples, with slip lengths b obeying a power law dependence. The Navier's interfacial friction coecient, k, is deduced from the slip length measurements and from independent measurements of the solutions viscosity $\eta$. The observed scaling of k versus $\phi$ clearly excludes a molecular mechanism of friction based on the existence of a depletion layer. Instead, we show that the data of $\eta$($\phi$) and k($\phi$) are understood when taking into account the dependence of the solvent friction on $\phi$. Two models, based on the friction of blobs or of monomers on the solid surface, well describe our data. Both points out that the Navier's interfacial friction is a semi-local phenomenon.

Abstract: International audience; Blends of a copolyether−ester thermoplastic with different multifunctional (mono, di, and tri) amine-terminated polyethers have been carried out by reactive extrusion. The reaction with polyetheramine Jeffamine T-403 allows one to reduce drastically the viscosity of the blends while at the same time improving the Young's modulus of the matrix up to 30% and keeping elongation at break around 700% and stress at break around 20 MPa. The mechanism and the structures deeply scrutinized by NMR (in particular 2D DOSY), chromatography, and mass spectrometry evidenced the in situ formation of star-shaped-based structures. These complex structures are responsible of these changes in rheological and mechanical behaviors. This one-step approach represents an efficient and relevant way to enhance some mechanical properties while favoring the flow behavior of these copolyether−esters.

Abstract: This paper is dealing with the polyisobutylene (PIB) migration phenomenon through the post-consumer agricultural waste multilayer films based on four linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) matrices. Through this work, a bridge between shear, elongational rheology, and tack surface properties was revealed on both model and recycled blends. Hereto, effects of aging time and temperature were investigated and rationalized depending on the short- and long-chain branching in LLDPE matrices as well their polyethylene (PE) crystallization. The linear viscoelastic properties were influenced despite the small PIB amounts. This migration influenced also the slippage in steady flow regime. It was also demonstrated that transient uniaxial extensional properties are very sensitive in the presence of PIB, which seems to hold back the PE strain hardening properties. Therefore, the axial force and the surface friction coefficient were determined and discussed in correlation with bulk rheological findings. Hence, the obtained results contributed to unveiling new insights on the physical mechanisms governing the PIB migration with or without fillers to inhibit its migration in their recycled films.

Abstract: International audience; Polyimides are commonly synthesized in a 2-step solution polymerization process. Such process requires long reaction times as well as specific care due to the use of potentially harmful solvents. In the present study, the total reaction time for producing polyimides has been lowered to less than 10 min by using a solvent-free continuous reactive extrusion process. The proof of concept was determined with the system based on 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenone-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) and an aliphatic diamine, Jeffamine D-230 within a microextruder. Degrees of conversion to polyimide, determined with 13C NMR and DSC analysis, are over 90 mol % after 5 min of extrusion at 180 °C, 200 °C, and 225 °C, respectively. These syntheses were then transferred to a twin-screw extruder to form linear aliphatic-aromatic polyimides with two types of dianhydride: BTDA and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA). Comparison with a conventional solution polymerization process showed no significant differences in the polymers characteristics. The polyimides produced with this method presented glass transition temperatures ranging from 5 to 90 °C. The number-average molar masses measured were between 11 000 and 15 000 g·mol–1.

Abstract: This paper deals with the preparation of graphene oxide sheets (GO) modified with magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4NPs) for removing Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions. Moreover, the recovered Cu(II)-based material was recycled as a catalyst for the homocoupling of a series of alkynes. The adsorption behavior of magnetic GO-based materials towards Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions was studied as a function of the pH value and the contact time and it was observed that the magnetic GO-based absorbent can be separated quickly from its aqueous solution by using an external magnetic field. Its equilibrium adsorption capacity value for Cu(II) ions was as high as 3.808 ± 0.125 mmol.g−1 under neutral conditions. In addition, the catalytic activity of the resulting [GO-EDA-CAC@Fe3O4NPs]-BPED-Cu(II) material toward the homocoupling of phenylacetylene into 1,4-diphenylbuta-1,3-diyne was demonstrated with a yield up to 99%. Importantly, the [GO-EDA-CAC@Fe3O4NPs]-BPED-Cu(II) supported catalyst was consecutively reused for fifteen runs without a significant loss of its activity.

Abstract: International audience; Polystyrene latexes were prepared in the presence of an amino-containing functional comonomer, i.e. N-(3-aminopropyl) methacrylamide hydrochloride (APMH), via soap-free batch emulsion polymerization initiated by the cationic initiator 2,2'-azobis (2-amidino propane) di-hydrochloride (V50). These latexes were characterized through studying the influence of ionic comonomers on the polymerization kinetics, particle size, surface charge density and colloidal properties. The synthesized latexes were monodisperse with a final size between 100 and 600 nm depending on the APMH concentration. The initial polymerization rate and the particles number increased in accordance with the Smith-Ewart theory for soap-free styrene emulsion polymerization with a hydrophilic functional comonomer. The final functionalization rate of the particles has been particularly studied with the intention of fitting the prepared latexes to be utilized in the immobilization of biological molecules for biological sample preparation and diagnostic applications. Abstract: International audience; Additive manufacturing techniques based on liquid resins, such as digital light processing (DLP), demonstrate higher resolution and accuracy than other printing techniques, but their applications have been hindered by the limited materials selection. Overall, there have been numerous successes in printing acrylic-epoxy resins but the final parts generally suffer from relatively poor mechanical properties. In this study, hybrid printable formulations that are based on acrylic-epoxy resins and ceramic filler are introduced and their printability on DLP machines is demonstrated. Here, we present an ultraviolet (UV) printed acrylic-epoxy with high Young modulus via a two-stage curing approach. Herein, different experiments are used to investigate the evolution of the materials properties during the post-process. Indeed, we conduct experiments to characterize the physico-chemical features and the evolution of mechanical properties before and after post-process. Finally we report the preparation of polymeric rapid tooling inserts with tailored mechanical and physical properties, which were used as injection molding cavities for prototyping and low volume production.

Abstract: Poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs), similar to their ionic liquid (IL) analogues, present a nanostructure arising from local interactions. The influence of this nanostructure on the macromolecular conformation of polymer chains is investigated for the first time by means of an extensive use of small angle neutron scattering on a series of poly(1-vinyl-3-alkylimidazolium)s with varying alkyl side-chain length and counter-anion both in bulk and in dilute solutions. Radii of gyration are found to increase with the side-chain length in solution as a consequence of crowding interactions between neighboring monomers. In bulk, however, a non monotonic evolution of the radius of gyration reflects a change in chain flexibility and a potential screening of electrostatic interactions. Additionally at smaller scale, SANS provides an experimental estimation of both the chain diameter and the correlation length between neighboring chains, comparison of which unveils clear evidence of interdigitation of the alkyl side-chains. Abstract: International audience; The influence of water sorption on the alpha-relaxation of an epoxy network was studied by performing impedance measurements in continuous immersion (in aqueous solution) at various temperatures in the range [20; 80] degrees C. Relaxation times associated with the alpha-relaxation were found to shift towards lower temperatures as a result of plasticization, accompanied by a decrease in the relaxation strength. The most striking feature of the impedance measurements was a crossover from a Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann (VFT) to an Arrhenius dependence of the relaxation times upon cooling, in the vicinity of the glass transition of the epoxy network. Complementary experimental techniques (namely differential scanning calorimetry, dielectric spectroscopy, thermally stimulated currents) were used on dry and wet epoxy samples to better understand the physical origin of this crossover. Various scenarios were discussed; the most convincing involved confinement-like effects. The deviation from VFT behaviour below T-g was possibly due to long-living H-bonds between the epoxy network and water molecules, which limited the cooperativity of the alpha-relaxation. The water molecules H-bonding to the network localized the mobility of the main chain, as confirmed by thermally stimulated currents performed on a wet sample.

Abstract: International audience; In this study, water vapor sorption, desorption properties and tensile mechanical properties of four cellulosic fibers, cotton (C), flax (F), viscose (V) and cellulose acetate (CA), were determined. The sorption and desorption isotherms were modeled using the Park model, which allowed an accurate fitting on the whole range of water activity. This model corresponds to a multi-sorption mode dividing in three sorption modes: Langmuir sorption, Henry’s law and water clustering. Park’s parameters were compared for the sorption and desorption isotherms for each fiber. Regardless of the fiber, differences between sorption and desorption were obtained only for the Henry sorption. The obtained sorption properties were correlated to the accessibility and the amount of sorption sites and also to the crystallinity level of the fibers. It was found that V exhibited the highest water sorption capacity due to a higher hydroxyl groups accessibility and a low amorphous fraction, followed by F, C and CA. Results from tensile tests demonstrated that F and C fibers were more rigid, more resistant and less ductile than CA and V fibers due to a difference of microstructure of the fibers. Finally, the presence of water-sorbed molecules led to a decrease in tensile modulus due to plasticization phenomenon.

Abstract: International audience; Smart materials reversibly changing properties in response to a stimuli are promising for a broad array of applications. In this article, we report the use of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) as fuel to create new types of timecontrolled materials switching reversibly from a gel to a solution (gel−sol−gel cycle). Applying various neutral amines as organogelators, TCA addition induces amine protonation, switching the system to a solution, while TCA decarboxylation over time enables a return to the initial gel state. Consequently, the newly obtained materials possess interesting time-dependent properties applied in the generation of remoldable objects, as an erasing ink, as chiroptical switches, or for the generation of new types of electrical systems.

Abstract: International audience; The development of environmentally friendly materials and processes is a major issue that concerns all industrial sectors, including microelectronics. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the possibility of using chitosan-based photoresists for microelectronic applications on silicon by 193 nm photolithography. The photopatterning of chitosan films is demonstrated and analyzed by different spectroscopy and microscopy techniques. In particular, it is shown that 193 nm irradiation allows one to induce chain breaks that modify the solubility of chitosan in an aqueous developing solution, without denaturing the chitosan macromolecule chains. This mechanism allows one to obtain patterns, and it is shown that these patterns can be transferred by physical etching into silica. It is also demonstrated that the formulated resins are compatible with industrial spin-coating and exposure tools, which opens very interesting perspectives for these chitosan-based positive resins in a microelectronic context.

Abstract: International audience; In today's biomedical research, a huge effort is being made towards the development of efficient drug delivery systems, achieving sustainable and controlled delivery of drugs. Chitosan (CS) hydrogels are high water content materials with very relevant biological properties to that purpose. Their use for a local and delayed delivery has already been demonstrated for a wide variety of therapeutic agents. One relatively recent strategy to improve these CS-based systems consists in the insertion of colloids, embedding drugs, within their three-dimensional matrix. This provides a second barrier to the diffusion of drugs through the system, and allows to better control their release. The main objective of this review is to report the many existing complex systems composed of CS hydrogels embedding different types of colloids used as drug delivery devices to delay the release of drugs. The various biomedical applications of such final systems are also detailed in this review.

Abstract: International audience; Processing low density poly(urethane-isocyanurate) (PIR) rigid foam boards still remains challenging, especially for high thickness panels with the spontaneous formation of two-dimensional wrinkles. Increasing the double-belt conveyor’s temperature (mold temperature in our case) was regarded as a way to increase the rigidity of the foam base material and, ultimately to increase the stiffness of the PIR foam under the facing. For that purpose, PIR foam samples simulating real panels were prepared at different mold temperatures and were chemically analyzed using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy while a Shore durometer (type OO) was used to estimate the foam rigidity in various locations of the model panel. Obviously, the isocyanurate content of the foam under the facing was found to increase with the increase in mold temperature but surprisingly the Shore hardness demonstrated the reverse effect. This result was explained by the decrease in the density of the foam layer under the facing as the mold temperature increases, thereby counteracting the probable increase in stiffness of the foam base material itself. In addition, foam characterizations at different depths (rise direction) indicate that the chemical and mechanical gradients occurring in the first 20-30 mm tend to disappear as the mold temperature increases.

Abstract: Background: Intraoperative three-dimensional (3D) fabrication of living tissues could be the next biomedical revolution in patient treatment. Approach: We developed a surgery-ready robotic 3D bioprinter and demonstrated that a bioprinting procedure using medical grade hydrogel could be performed using a 6-axis robotic arm in vivo for treating burn injuries.Results: We conducted a pilot swine animal study on a deep third-degree severe burn model. We observed that the use of cell-laden bioink as treatment substantially affects skin regeneration, producing in situ fibroblast growth factor (FGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), necessary for tissue regeneration and re-epidermalization of the wound. Innovation and Conclusion: We described an animal study of intraoperative 3D bioprinting living tissue. This emerging technology brings the first proof of in vivo skin printing feasibility using a surgery-ready robotic arm-based bioprinter. Our positive outcome in skin regeneration, joined with this procedure's feasibility, allow us to envision the possibility of using this innovative approach in a human clinical trial in the near future.

Abstract: International audience; We have previously shown that implantation of a fragmented chitosan hydrogel suspension (chitosan-FPHS) into a traumatic spinal cord lesion in adult rats led to significant axon regrowth and functional recovery, which was associated to a modulation of inflammation. Using an in vitro culture system, we show here that polarization of bone marrow-derived macrophages is indeed modified by direct contact with chitosan-FPHS. Reducing the degree of acetylation (DA), and raising the concentration of chitosan (Cp, from 1.5% to 3%), favors macrophage polarization towards anti-inflammatory subtypes. These latter also migrate and adhere efficiently on low, but not high DA chitosan-FPHS, both in vitro and in vivo, while inflammatory macrophages rarely invade a chitosan-FPHS implant in vivo, no matter the DA. Our in vitro model setup should prove a valuable tool for screening diverse biomaterial formulations and combinations thereof for their inflammatory potential prior to implantation in vivo.

Abstract: International audience; A new geophysical and geological dataset, acquired during the SISMAORE oceanographic campaign (2020-2021), reveals a recent tectonic and volcanic deformation distributed over 130km in the abyssal plain that permit to unravel the unconstrained lithospheric plate boundaries between Lwandle and Somalia blocks and the controversial origin of the Comoros Archipelago.Two recent submarine volcanic and tectonic provinces of 5000km2 , with a large number of varied volcanic structures and faults, are unveiled: the N160° N'Droundé (north of GrandeComore) and the N130° Mwezi provinces (north of Anjouan/Mayotte). Dredged Mwezi rocks suggest a recent gas-rich volcanic activity. It is also identified a recent N130° trending volcanic structures (cones, lava flows, eruptive fissures) between Anjouan and Mayotte in agreement with the presence of shallow earthquakes, and also recent lava flows on the southern flanks of the Grande Comore and Moheli. Southwards, recent sedimentation is important with no volcanism and deformation. A consistent sedimentary thickness covers the flanks of Mayotte and Anjouan and the presence of large areas of submarine instability at the foot and on the slope of the islands is confirmed.These first observations suggest a transtensional deformation, accommodated by dextral strike-slip motion, strongly influenced by pre-existing structuration of the Mesozoic oceanic crust and by the East Africa Rift system. The 130km wide zone of intraplate deformationcharacterizes an immature lithospheric plate boundary of the north Lwandle block.

Abstract: In this article, we report the conception and the use of dialysis based medical device for extraction of metals. The medical device is obtained by addition in the dialysate of a functionnalized chitosan that can chelate endogenous metals like iron or copper. The water soluble functionnalized chitosan is obtained after controlled reacetylation and addition of DOTAGA. Due to the high mass of chitosan, the polymer cannot cross through the membrane and the metals are trapped in the dialysate during hemodialysis. Copper captation has been evaluated in vitro using an hemodialysis protocol. Feasibility study has been performed on healthy sheep showing no acute toxicity of the whole procedure and first insights of metallic extraction even on healthy animals.

Abstract: International audience; The widespread use of facemasks throughout the population is recommended by the WHO to reduce transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. As some regions of the world are facing mask shortages, reuse may be necessary. However, used masks are considered as a potential hazard that may spread and transmit disease if they are not decontaminated correctly and systematically before reuse. As a result, the inappropriate decontamination practices that are commonly witnessed in the general public are challenging management of the epidemic at a large scale. To achieve public acceptance and implementation, decontamination procedures need to be low-cost and simple. We propose the use of hot hygroscopic materials to decontaminate non-medical facemasks in household settings. We report on the inactivation of a viral load on a facial mask exposed to hot hygroscopic materials for 15 minutes. As opposed to recent academic studies whereby decontamination is achieved by maintaining heat and humidity above a given value, a more flexible procedure is proposed here using a slow decaying pattern, which is both effective and easier to implement, suggesting straightforward public deployment and hence reliable implementation by the population.

Abstract: The development of new interfacial rheological setup (IRS) for characterizing the interfacial viscoelastic properties of polymer systems is a subject of growing interest and constitutes a well-known challenge of high scientific and industrial application value. Recently, biconical and double-wall Ring (DWR) devices that can easily be attached to standard rheometers have been marketed for this purpose, but measurements must be made below 70 °C to ensure a stable homogeneous temperature at the interface. Meanwhile each device has its own limitation: the bicone has high inertia and a relatively low Boussinesq number, giving it a low signal-to-noise ratio, while the DWR is too fragile to probe the interfaces of high viscous systems in the molten state. Currently, to predict the dynamic interfacial properties of molten polymer systems, the interfacial rheology characterization is based mainly on indirect methods such as numerical modeling. In this study, a novel high temperature resistant interfacial rheology cell has been developed. This new setup allows direct interfacial rheology measurements up to 200 °C with temperature gradients of 1 °C at the polymer-polymer interface. To validate this new IRS device, the surface/interfacial properties of different model fluids having different well-known structure and viscoelastic characteristics have been investigated. To enable a more sensitive measurement of interfacial rheological properties, lightweight titanium based biconical geometry was newly designed. The effect of the molecular weight and the temperature was highlighted. Finally, the interfacial rheology testing of molten semicrystalline polymer systems has been achieved for the first time. The measured apparent interfacial shear properties in both oscillatory and steady flow modes were carefully corrected, considering the contribution of the bulk-subphases during processing of the numerical data.

Abstract: Poly(l-lactide-co-d,l-lactide) PDLA/45S5 Bioglass® (BG) composites for medical devices were developed using an original approach based on a thermal treatment of BG prior to processing. The aim of the present work is to gain a fundamental understanding of the relationships between the morphology, processing conditions and final properties of these biomaterials. A rheological study was performed to evaluate and model the PDLA/BG degradation during processing. The filler contents, as well as their thermal treatments, were investigated. The degradation of PDLA was also investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) and mechanical characterization. The results highlight the value of thermally treating the BG in order to control the degradation of the polymer during the process. The present work provides a guideline for obtaining composites with a well-controlled particle dispersion, optimized mechanical properties and limited degradation of the PDLA matrix.

Abstract: Background and Objectives: To test the long-term ability of human ovarian cortex cells to develop in unconventional culture conditions. Materials and Methods. Ovarian cortex cells from fetuses aged 23 to 39 weeks gestation were cultured for 90 days in hollow chitosan hydrogel micro-bioreactors and concurrently in traditional wells. Various cell-type counts were considered. Results: With intact follicles as a denominator, the percentage of growing intact follicles at Day 0 varied widely between ovaries (0 to 31.7%). This percentage tended to increase or stay relatively constant in bioreactor as in control cultures; it tended more toward an increase over time in bioreactor vs. control cultures. Modeled percentages showed differences (though not significant) in favor of bioreactor cultures (16.12% difference at D50 but only 0.12% difference at D90). With all follicles present as a denominator, the percentage of growing primary and secondary follicles at D0 varied widely between ovaries (0 to 29.3%). This percentage tended to increase over time in bioreactor cultures but to decrease in control cultures. Modeled percentages showed significant differences in favor of bioreactor cultures (8.9% difference at D50 and 11.1% difference at D90). At D50 and D90, there were only few and sparse apoptotic cells in bioreactor cultures vs. no apoptotic cells in control cultures. Conclusions: Over three months, bioreactor folliculogenesis outperformed slightly traditional culture. This is an interesting perspective for follicle preservation and long-term toxicological studies.

Abstract: Proteins ensure their biological functions by interacting with each other. Hence, characterising protein interactions is fundamental for our understanding of the cellular machinery, and for improving medicine and bioengineering. Over the past years, a large body of experimental data has been accumulated on who interacts with whom and in what manner. However, these data are highly heterogeneous and sometimes contradictory, noisy, and biased. Ab initio methods provide a means to a “blind” protein-protein interaction network reconstruction. Here, we report on a molecular cross-docking-based approach for the identification of protein partners. The docking algorithm uses a coarse-grained representation of the protein structures and treats them as rigid bodies. We applied the approach to a few hundred of proteins, in the unbound conformations, and we systematically investigated the influence of several key ingredients, such as the size and quality of the interfaces, and the scoring function. We achieved some significant improvement compared to previous works, and a very high discriminative power on some specific functional classes. We provide a readout of the contributions of shape and physico-chemical complementarity, interface matching, and specificity, in the predictions. In addition, we assessed the ability of the approach to account for protein surface multiple usages, and we compared it with a sequence-based deep learning method. This work may contribute to guiding the exploitation of the large amounts of protein structural models now available toward the discovery of unexpected partners and their complex structure characterisation.

Abstract: Polymeric nanoparticles are highly important functional nanomaterials for a large range of applications from therapeutics to energy. Advances in nanotechnology have enabled the engineering of multifunctional polymeric nanoparticles with a variety of shapes and inner morphologies. Thanks to its inherent simplicity, the nanoprecipitation technique has progressively become a popular approach to construct polymeric nanoparticles with precise control of nanostructure. The present review highlights the great capability of this technique in controlling the fabrication of various polymeric nanostructures of interest. In particular, we show here how the nanoprecipitation of either block copolymers or mixtures of homopolymers can afford a myriad of colloids displaying equilibrium (typically onion-like) or out-of-equilibrium (stacked lamellae, porous cores) morphologies, depending whether the system “freezes” while passing the glass transition or crystallization point of starting materials. We also show that core-shell morphologies, either from polymeric or oil/polymer mixtures, are attainable by this one-pot process. A final discussion proposes new directions to enlarge the scope and possible achievements of the process.

Abstract: In recent years, significant advancement in the synthesis, characterization and association with different types of polymers, thermoplastics or reactive (thermosetting) systems of ionic liquids with tunable nature (ammonium, imidazolium, and phosphonium) open up new perspectives in the field of polymers, in particular in one of epoxy networks. It has been shown that ionic liquids (ILs) could contribute to host polymers as they can act as nanostructuring agents, interfacial agents of nanofillers (ionic exchanges with lamellar silicates or grafted onto silica nanofillers), or even as reagent intervening on the polymerization mechanism. Thus, enhanced physical behaviors (mechanical, surface, thermal resistance, etc.) which cannot be obtained with conventional approaches could be achieved. Furthermore, according to numerous studies, it has also been shown that organic-inorganic (O/I) objects such as metal-oxo clusters of the POSS® (PolyOligomericSilsexqioxanes) could be incorporated into polymers. In particular, in networks based on epoxy or methacryate, POSS® could act as co-monomer and/or self-assemble as O/I nanostructures in order to confer specific functionalities. This thesis work presents the preparation, characterization and modification of epoxy/amine or epoxy IL/amine by IL-modified POSS® nanoclusters. The first par of this work is dedicated to study the effect of the grafting of imidazolium ionic liquid onto POSS® carrying different organic ligands (isobutyl or phenyl) on the formation of uniform and well-dispersed POSS® nanodomains in the epoxy-amine networks. In the second part, the effect of the nanostructuration of IL-g-POSS®Ph within the epoxy/amine network on the properties, including thermal stability, surface properties, mechanical, and fire behavior will be examined. In the last section, new epoxy IL (ILM/IPD) hybrid O/I networks have been implemented. For this, diepoxyde salts (ILMs) were synthesized and then copolymerized with a diamine hardener (IPD) with or without the presence of POSS®Ph-triol or IL-g-POSS®Ph. Such routes were investigated in order to design flexible epoxy IL hybrid networks (ILM/amine/IL-g-POSS®Ph) exhibiting very interesting and multifunctional properties compared to conventional epoxy networks., Au cours de ces dernières années, des avancées importantes ont été réalisées dans la synthèse, la caractérisation et l’association avec différents polymères, thermoplastiques ou systèmes réactifs (thermodurcissables) de liquides ioniques de nature divers (ammonium, imidazolium ou phosphonium) ouvrent de nouvelles perspectives dans le domaine des matériaux polymères, en particulier celui des réseaux époxyde. En effet, il a été démontré que les liquides ioniques (LI) pouvaient apporter beaucoup aux polymères en se comportant en tant qu’agents nanostructurants, agents interfaciaux de nanocharges (échanges ioniques avec les silicates lamellaires ou greffés sur des nanocharges de silice) ou encore en tant que co-monomères intervenant sur les mécanismes de polymérisation. Des comportements physiques améliorés (mécanique, de surface, de tenue thermique, etc.) peuvent être ainsi obtenus par des approches conventionnelles. Par ailleurs, au cours de nombreuses études, il a été également démontré que des objets organiques-inorganiques (O/I) comme des clusters de type métal-oxo ou POSS® (PolyOligomericSilSexqioxanes) pouvaient être incorporés dans des polymères, en particulier des réseaux de type polyépoxy ou méthacrylates, comme co-monomères et/ou être auto-assemblés sous forme de nanostructures O/I susceptibles de leur conférer des fonctionnalités spécifiques. Ce travail de thèse présente donc la préparation, la caractérisation et la modification de réseaux époxy/amine ou époxy LI/amine avec des POSS® modifiés par des LIs. Dans un premier temps, ce travail est dédié à étudier l'effet du greffage des liquides ioniques d'imidazolium sur des POSS® porteurs de différents ligands organiques (isobutyle ou phényle) sur la formation de nanodomaines POSS® uniformément bien dispersés dans des réseaux époxy-amine. Dans la deuxième partie, l’effet de la nanostructuration des LI-g-POSS®Ph sur les propriétés de réseaux époxy/amine, à savoir leur stabilité thermique, leurs propriétés de surface, leur comportement mécanique et leur tenue au feu sera étudié. Dans la dernière section, de nouveaux réseaux époxy-LI hybride O/I ont été mis en œuvre. Pour cela des sels diépoxydés (LIMs) ont été synthétisés puis co-polymérisés avec un durcisseur diamine (IPD) avec ou sans la présence de POSS®Ph-triol ou LI-g-POSS®Ph afin de concevoir des réseaux époxy-LI hybride (LIM/amine/LI-g-POSS®Ph) souples présentant des propriétés très intéressantes par rapport des réseaux époxy classiques.

Abstract: International audience; Ring-opening ionic polymerization of cyclosiloxanes in dispersed media has long been discovered, and is nowadays both fundamentally studied and practically used. In this short communication, we show some preliminary results on the cationic ring-opening polymerization of hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3), a crystalline strained cycle, in water. Depending on the catalyst or/and surfactants used, polymers of various molar masses are prepared in a straightforward way. Emphasis is given here on experiments conducted with tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (BCF), where high-molar polymers were generated at room temperature. In surfactant-free conditions, µm-sized droplets are stabilized by silanol end-groups of thus generated amphiphilic polymers, the latter of which precipitate in the course of reaction through chain extension. Introducing various surfactants in the recipe allows generating smaller emulsions in size with close polymerization ability, but better final colloidal stability, at the expense of low small cycles’ content. A tentative mechanism is finally proposed.

Abstract: Due to non-biodegradable polymer persistence in the environment, such as polyolefins, and due to the use of non renewable resources in polymer production, biobased and/or biodegradable alternatives constitute a growing market. In eco-conception approach, during the formulation stage, use properties and processability, as well as end-of-life, must be considered, in order to achieve a compromise allowing an environmental footprint reduction. The work proposes a methodology allowing the anticipation of material end-of-life during the conception stage, specifically through organic valorization routes. This methodology aims at guiding the conception of new materials exhibiting controlled degradability, and identifying key factors affecting their degradability. Different protocols were implemented, assessing abiotic and enzymatic hydrolysability, biodegradability in wastewater, and disintegration in scenarized media. Series of biodegradable polyester blends were used as models: those were films of poly(butylene succinate) or poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate), blended with lignin, poly(lactic acid) or starch. These blends were compatibilized with ionic liquids and eutectic solvents, whose impact on polymer degradability had not been well studied in the literature. This work helps to establish relations between formulation and degradability, through sample characterization at initial state and after degradation, and to propose routes aiming at conceiving materials exhibiting controlled degradability., En réponse aux problématiques posées par la persistance des matériaux polymères conventionnels tels que les polyoléfines dans l’environnement, ainsi que par l’utilisation de ressources fossiles, de nombreuses alternatives biosourcées et/ou biodégradables apparaissent sur le marché. Dans une démarche d’éco-conception, lors de la formulation d’un nouveau matériau pour en moduler les performances, les propriétés d’usage, la mise en oeuvre, mais aussi la fin de vie doivent être considérées dans le but de proposer des compromis visant à réduire l’empreinte environnementale globale. La thèse propose une méthodologie visant à guider l’anticipation de la fin de vie dès l’étape de conception, en particulier en vue de valorisations organiques par traitement biologique. Cette méthodologie mise en place vise à favoriser le développement de matériaux à fin de vie contrôlée et à identifier les paramètres influençant leur dégradation. Un ensemble d’études permettant d’évaluer l’hydrolysabilité abiotique et enzymatique, la biodégradabilité dans des boues de station d’épuration, ainsi que la fragmentation dans des milieux scénarisés, ont été mis en place, à l’aide de séries de films biodégradables. Il s’agit de matériaux à base de polyesters : poly(butylène succinate) ou poly(butylène succinate-co-adipate), mélangés avec de la lignine, de l’acide polylactique ou de l’amidon. Afin d’assurer la compatibilité de ces mélanges, des liquides ioniques et solvants eutectiques ont été employés. L’impact de ces additifs sur les propriétés de biodégradabilité des matériaux polymères a été peu étudié dans la littérature. La thèse permet dans une certaine mesure d’établir un lien entre formulation et dégradabilité, grâce à la caractérisation des échantillons à l’état initial et au suivi de leurs propriétés après dégradation, et de proposer des pistes visant à la conception de matériaux à dégradabilité contrôlée.

Abstract: International audience; Two natural zeolite-bearing rocks (one containing clinoptilolite and the other chabazite, phillipsite, and analcime) were Fe-exchanged and thermally treated in a reducing atmosphere at 750 °C for 2 h. Two nanocomposites, formed by the dispersion of Fe nanoparticles in a ceramic matrix, were obtained. The prepared lunar dust simulants also contain Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ and other mineral phases originally present in the starting materials. The samples were fully characterized by different techniques such as atomic absorption spectrometry, X-ray powder diffraction, followed by Rietveld analysis, transmission electron microscopy, N2 adsorption/desorption analysis at 77 K, measurements of grain size distribution, magnetic property measurements, broad-band dielectric spectroscopy, and DC conductivity measurements. The results of this characterization showed that the obtained metal–ceramic nanocomposites exhibit a chemical and mineralogical composition and electrical and magnetic properties similar to real moon dust and, thus, appear valid moon dust simulants.

Abstract: A study of the electrical conductivity evolution of polyethylene filled with carbon nanotubes during quiescent annealing as well as under shear deformation is proposed in this work. For such nanocomposites, the electrical conductivity can be theoretically obtained at filler content lower than 1 %. This material containing a percolated network can be used in industrial applications as protection from electrostatic discharge. Hence, CNTs filled materials can advantageously replace polymer-carbon black composites which contain usually around 20 wt. % of fillers. However, during forming process, the structure created by CNTs connections is strongly modified by the applied stress, possibly resulting in an insulating final product.This study investigates the filler network structuring and destructing mechanisms that occurs during processing steps by means of conductivity monitoring. The dynamic percolation was studied in the first instance to evaluate the extent of the CNT network strengthening ability in the melt polymer. In the case of semi-crystalline polymer, the composite morphology is modified during the cooling by the apparition of a crystalline phase. The disruption of the conducting network by the polyethylene crystallization process has then been considered more especially as the CNT present a certain nucleating character. Finally, combined rheological and electrical measurements were performed to study the shear-induced fillers network modification. A kinetic equation is proposed to follow the effective CNT content and therefore predict the conductivity evolution during and after a shear deformation. As a result, this work contributed to deepen the comprehension of the thermo-rheological history influence on the conductivity of polymer-CNT composites.; Les travaux présentent une analyse de l’évolution de la conductivité électrique de composites à matrices polyéthylène chargées en nanotubes de carbone (NTCs) lors de recuits thermiques et durant des déformations par cisaillement. L’ajout d’une quantité suffisante de NTCs dans une matrice polymère permet d’obtenir une conductivité électrique suffisante pour être utilisée dans des applications de protection aux décharges électrostatiques. L’utilisation des NTCs s’avère particulièrement intéressante, du fait de leurs facteurs de forme, car seulement une faible quantité (autour d’un pourcent) est nécessaire à la formation un réseau percolant de charges, responsable de la conduction électrique. Cependant, les étapes de mise en forme peuvent changer l’arrangement des charges, modifiant alors les propriétés électriques du matériau.Les mécanismes de structuration et de destruction du réseau percolant ont été étudiés par l’intermédiaire de mesure de conductivité. La portée du phénomène d’auto-assemblage du réseau dans le polymère à l’état fondu a été évaluée. Aussi appelée dans la littérature percolation dynamique, cet effet permet d’améliorer la conductivité du composite ainsi que de réduire le seuil de percolation. Lors du refroidissement du composite, la morphologie du matériau est modifiée avec l’apparition d’une phase cristalline. La cristallisation de la matrice conduit à une perte de conductivité rendant compte de la dégradation du réseau de charge. Finalement, un montage couplant une mesure rhéologique avec une mesure électrique a été utilisé dans l’objectif d’analyser les processus structurants s’opérant pendant et après un écoulement en cisaillement. La concurrence des mécanismes de création et de destruction de contacts électriques entre charges a pu être observée. Un modèle permettant de prédire l’évolution de la conductivité des composites à l’état fondu pendant et après la déformation en cisaillement est proposé.
