Background: Green synthesis of nanomaterials has gained interest over the years as it has many benefits compared to conventional methods. Green methods are non-toxic and economic due to the use of aqueous extracts as reducing agents. Yerba mate is a widely used herb in South America, showing an available and economical alternative to conventional methods Methods: Different copper and zinc nanostructures were obtained using yerba mate extract (Ilex paraguariensis) as a reducing and capping agent. Furthermore, adjusting NaCl concentration and temperature, it was possible to successfully tune and examine the morphology of the resulting nanostructures by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Phenolic oxidation was evaluated by Raman spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) to assess the role of yerba mate extract in the reaction. Moreover, antimicrobial activity versus Pseudomonas aeruginosa was assayed, and antioxidant activity was performed by the DPPH method. Results and Conclusion: The present study reveals a powerful method to obtain zinc and copper nanostructures, showing a logarithmic reduction of Pseudomonas aeruginosa of 2.14 and 5.92 CFU/mL at 96 hours respectively and scavenger activity of 42% and 22%, respectively. These properties highlight the potential of the nanomaterials for applications in catalysis, textile, biomedical and agricultural fields.

The configuration of the sensory quality of coffee begins in the tree, where chemical precursors are deposited and formed in the seeds as the fruits develop. Fruit within the range classified as mature can have a wide range of properties. This study evaluated three degrees of maturity and established their chemical and sensory characteristics using analytical techniques such as liquid and gas chromatography. The maturity states evaluated did not show differences in organic acids, free fatty acids, lipids, total chlorogenic acids, proteins, alkaloids or sucrose. Fructose and glucose showed differences with respect to the degree of maturity, with higher values associated with more developed states. The analysis of variance did not show a significant effect on sensory attributes or sensory quality. The chromatic coordinate a* of the CIEL*a*b* scale reached a maximum value of 25.16, and the evaluated states were different from each other.

The concept “non-typical users” comprises people who experience significant digital gaps that alienate them from the benefits of technology. This issue is commonly experienced as unsatisfying interactions with technological products or devices that show not flexible possibilities as a core feature. Accordingly, this research contemplates including the needs and priorities of the non-typical users as design requirements for technological devices. The outcome of applying these considerations might allow a deeper understanding of the best way for companies and designers to cope with present changes and challenges towards a more sustainable and inclusive future. The findings will assemble a design methodology that considers usability issues, providing alternatives for the design team.

Rapid technological evolution defines the first two decades of the millennium. This phenomenon has increased the digital gap, disparities, and inequalities in global and local contexts. This paper reports a systematic literature mapping of 180 articles published from 2000 to 2021 discussing the digital gap. The documents were retrieved using boolean operations in two databases, adding terms related to gender, age, ethnicity, and disabilities, focusing on population groups that are especially vulnerable to the effects of this phenomenon. The method included categorizing the retrieved documents to provide a general view of the most concerning topics in the academic and research community. This analysis concludes (a) the approaches to address this topic are diverse, as this is a multilayered, complex, and interconnected issue; (b) many studies refer to developed countries; however, fewer are those who observe or analyze the underdeveloped regions; (c) the majority of published papers in the last decade report information and communication technologies (ICT) and their role in bridging the gap, showing an opportunity area for designing these technologies considering more accessible approaches through flexible technology approaches; (d) this study’s results are a valuable source of information to identify the design requirements for accessible products and service systems. The last section provides a detailed explanation of the findings.

The Smart, Sensing and Sustainable Systems paradigm, known as the “S3 concept”, aims to promote the evolution of companies and academic environments through shared and adaptable knowledge. Therefore, this advancement follows new integrated products and services systems (PSS) designed to integrate everyone, everywhere, including non-typical users, i.e. people with disabilities, indigenous communities, elders, etc. By considering this it may facilitate Product and Service Systems design methodologies so to cover the articulate and non-articulate customer needs and in addition, using a social perspective. This research proposes a design framework to consider the non-typical human input analysis, along with the knowledge-sharing models exploration as academic collaboration platforms, to help Design and engineering students in identifying the best possible way of designing inclusive Sensible, Smart and Sustainable Systems, including a Social dimension.

Bone is a hierarchical material that has inspired the design of biopolymer-derived biocomposites for tissue engineering purposes. The present study sought to synthesize and perform the physicochemical characterization and biocompatibility of a collagen-silica-based biocomposite for potential application in bone tissue engineering. Ultrastructure, biodegradability, swelling behavior, and biocompatibility properties were analyzed to gain insight into the advantages and limitations to the use of this biomaterial as a bone substitute. Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed a packed-collagen fibril matrix and silica particles in the biocomposite three-dimensional structure. As shown by analysis of in vitro swelling behavior and biodegradability, it would seem that the material swelled soon after implantation and then suffered degradation. Biocompatibility properties were analyzed in vivo 14-days postimplantation using an experimental model in Wistar rats. The biocomposite was placed inside the hematopoietic bone marrow compartment of both tibiae (n = 16). Newly formed woven bone was observed in response to both materials. Unlike the pure-collagen-tissue interface, extensive areas of osseointegration were observed at the biocomposite-tissue interface, which would indicate that silica particles stimulated new bone formation. Agglomerates of finely particulate material with no inflammatory infiltrate or multinucleated giant cells were observed in the bone marrow implanted with the biocomposite. Ifenprodil (1) is a potent GluN2B-selective N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist that is used as a cerebral vasodilator and has been examined in clinical trials for the treatment of drug addiction, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and COVID-19. To correlate biological data with configuration, all four ifenprodil stereoisomers were prepared by diastereoselective reduction and subsequent separation of enantiomers by chiral HPLC. The absolute configuration of ifenprodil stereoisomers was determined by X-ray crystal structure analysis of (1R,2S)-1a and (1S,2S)-1d. GluN2B affinity, ion channel inhibitory activity, and selectivity over α, σ, and 5-HT receptors were evaluated. (1R,2R)-Ifenprodil ((1R,2R)-1c) showed the highest affinity toward GluN2B-NMDA receptors (Ki = 5.8 nM) and high inhibition of ion flux in two-electrode voltage clamp experiments (IC50 = 223 nM). Whereas the configuration did not influence considerably the GluN2B-NMDA receptor binding, (1R)-configuration is crucial for elevated inhibitory activity. (1R,2R)-Configured ifenprodil (1R,2R)-1c exhibited high selectivity for GluN2B-NMDA receptors over adrenergic, serotonergic, and σ1 receptors.

Design of materials with novel sensitivities and smart behaviour is important for the development of smart systems with automated responsiveness. We have recently reported the synthesis of hydrogels, cross-linked by N,N'-diallyltartardiamide (DAT). The covalent DAT-crosslinking points have vicinal diols which can be easily cleaved with periodate, generating valuable a-oxo-aldehyde functional groups, useful for further chemical modification. Based on those findings, we envisioned that a self-healable hydrogel could be obtained by incorporation of primary amino functional groups, from 2-aminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride (AEMA), coexisting with DAT into the same network. The a-oxo-aldehyde groups generated after the reaction with periodate would arise in the immediate environment of amine groups to form imine cross-links. For this purpose, DAT-crosslinked hydrogels were synthesized and carefully characterized. The cleavage of DAT-crosslinks with periodate promoted changes in the mechanical and swelling properties of the materials. As expected, a self-healing behavior was observed, based on the spontaneous formation of imine covalent bonds. In addition, we surprisingly found a combination of fast vicinal diols cleavage and a low speed self-crosslinking reaction by imine formation. Consequently, it was found a time-window in which a periodate-treated polymer was obtained in a transient liquid state, which can be exploited to choose the final shape of the material, before automated gelling. The singular properties attained on these hydrogels could be useful for developing sensors, actuators, among other smart systems.

Smart or stimuli-responsive materials are an emerging class of materials used for tissue engineering and drug delivery. A variety of stimuli (including temperature, pH, redox-state, light, and magnet fields) are being investigated for their potential to change a material’s properties, interactions, structure, and/or dimensions. The specificity of stimuli response, and ability to respond to endogenous cues inherently present in living systems provide possibilities to develop novel tissue engineering and drug delivery strategies (for example materials composed of stimuli responsive polymers that self-assemble or undergo phase transitions or morphology transformations). Herein, smart materials as controlled drug release vehicles for tissue engineering are described, highlighting their potential for the delivery of precise quantities of drugs at specific locations and times promoting the controlled repair or remodeling of tissues. In order to detect novel σ receptor ligands, the rigit spiro [[2]benzopyran-1,1'-cyclohexan]-4'-one was connected with amino moieties derived from σ2 receptor preferring lead compounds resulting in mixtures of trans- and cis-configured amines 6, 18, and 27. In a four step synthesis the methyl acetals 6 were converted into fluoroethyl derivatives 13 and 30. The most promising σ2 receptor ligand is the methyl acetal 6a bearing a 2,4-dimethylbenzylamino moiety. The fluoroethyl derivatives 13c and 13d reveal high σ1 affinity but moderate selectivity over the σ2 subtype. In mice 13c and 13d showed antiallodynic activity that is stronger than that of the reference σ1 antagonist BD-1063 (34). Since the antiallodynic activity of 13c could only be partially reversed by the σ1 agonist PRE-084 (35), it is postulated that a second mechanism contributes to its overall antiallodynic effect. In contrast, the antiallodynic effect of its diastereomer 13d can be totally explained by a σ1 antagonism.

Current tendencies of product, project and services development focus on a higher consideration of the User Experience (UX). Therefore, traditional training and teaching methodologies need to adapt to prepare the students to develop strategies for problem solving for their professional education. Such needs have risen and interest in tendencies such as education and Industry 4.0 has grown. This paper presents and analyzes the process and results of a teaching implementation methodology based on Challenge-Based Learning (CBL). The paper describes the process followed, explaining the methodology precedents that led to the final implementation case. It also mentions previous experiments on product analysis and home automation developments that are linked to implementation of the technology. This case’s implementation, analysis and experimentation integrated the use of Emotional Domotics (ED) Tools for the UX analysis, to grant feedback and compare the students’ results with the bio-metrical and emotional computational analysis. The methodology, described through this document, allowed the students to better understand and experience some of the implications of an interconnected system with instant information feedback. This allowed them to better grasp part of the impact that the tendency towards the Internet of Things (IoT) is currently having, and the impact of the improvement proposals from the students.

Nowadays, the research of innovative drug delivery devices is focused on the design of multiple drug delivery systems, the prevention of drug side effects and the reduction of dosing intervals. Particularly, new mucosal delivery systems for antimicrobials, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory drugs has a growing development, regards to the avoidance of side effects, easy administration and a suitable drug concentration in the mucosa. Inthis work, chitosan hydrogels are evaluated as a biodegradable scaffold and as a bioactive agent carrier of an antioxidant-antimicrobial compound called thymol.Throughout the study, swelling behavior, viscoelastic properties and thermal analysis are highlighted to present its advantages for a biomedical application. Furthermore, the in vitro results obtained indicate that thymol-chitosan hydrogels are biocompatible when exposed to [3T3] fibroblasts, exhibit antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans for 72 h and antioxidant activity for 24 h. These are desirable properties for a mucosal delivery system for an antimicrobial-antioxidant dual therapy for periodontal disease. Fil: Alvarez Echazú, María Inés.
