A study was conducted to describe a method for applying CBCT data to help in the planning and placement of dental implants. Clinical goals for implant planning and placement are presented, and the anatomical requirements for successful placement are described. Findings indicate that virtual planning allows clinicians to examine multiple treatment scenarios.

A study was conducted to demonstrate the technique of comprehensive implant dentistry planning through integration of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) data. The technique includes clinical treatment with guided surgery.

The use of dental implants in the US has increased significantly since the late 1980s. Dental implants are bone-anchored prostheses used to replace missing teeth. A study estimated the number of US dentists who place implants from a survey of 3,431 dentists. Thirteen percent of all US dentists have surgically placed a dental implant. The number of dentists placing dental implants increased by approximately 3% between 1986 and 1990, and the number of implants placed increased 73% over the same time period. Over half of the dental implants done between 1986 and 1990 were placed by oral surgeons. Root-form implants were the most frequently used dental implants. The placement of dental implants was higher in the southeast states than in other regions.

The American Dental Association (ADA) denied application by the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) for specialty recognition of dental implant care in both 1985 and 1987. The number of patients who need dental implants is increasing, but the availability has not kept up with the demand. The ADA has six criteria that must be met before specialty recognition is awarded.
