- Abstract
The current study reports an ethnobotanical field investigation of traditionally gathered and consumed wild greens (Chorta) in one of the five so-called Blue Zones in the world: Ikaria Isle, Greece. Through 31 semi-structured interviews, a total of 56 wild green plants were documented along with their culinary uses, linguistic labels, and locally perceived tastes. Most of the gathered greens were described as bitter and associated with members of Asteraceae and Brassicaceae botanical families (31%), while among the top-quoted wild greens, species belonging to these two plant families accounted for 50% of the wild vegetables, which were consumed mostly cooked. Cross-cultural comparison with foraging in other areas of the central-eastern Mediterranean and the Near East demonstrated a remarkable overlapping of Ikarian greens with Cretan and Sicilian, as well as in the prevalence of bitter-tasting botanical genera. Important differences with other wild greens-related food heritage were found, most notably with the Armenian and Kurdish ones, which do not commonly feature many bitter greens. The proven role of extra-oral bitter taste receptors in the modulation of gastric emptying, glucose absorption and crosstalk with microbiota opens new ways of looking at these differences, in particular with regard to possible health implications. The present study is also an important attempt to preserve and document the bio-cultural gastronomic heritage of Chorta as a quintessential part of the Mediterranean diet. The study recommends that nutritionists, food scientists, and historians, as well as policymakers and practitioners, pay the required attention to traditional rural dietary systems as models of sustainable health. The Blue Zones (BZs) are areas of the globe inhabited by exceptionally long-lived populations. They include the island of Okinawa in Japan, the island of Ikaria in Greece, the mountain area of the island of Sardinia in Italy, and the peninsula of Nicoya in Costa Rica. Their longevity is a relatively recent phenomenon that has been progressively investigated since the dawn of this century. Research efforts over the past two decades have sought to shed light on the factors associated with this longevity, as well as explore the possibility of lessons transferable to the general population. Among the features of BZ inhabitants, described in the literature, their eating habits hold a prominent place, as these have the advantage of being easily quantifiable and applicable on a larger scale. However, it is too often taken for granted that the mere fact of being documented in a long-lived population makes the diet a causal factor of that population's longevity; this is a claim which should be proven. Furthermore, it is implicitly assumed that a specific BZ diet is homogeneous and remains stable over time, whereas some evidence suggests the opposite. Therefore, this review summarizes our current knowledge of the BZ diets and discusses whether they can be considered as a paradigmatic example of healthy nutrition valid for anyone or, rather, a set of evolving food patterns that has offered benefits to a few specific communities in recent decades. 5. What can we do? Performative refusal in Ikaria.

HISTORIOGRAPHY ,ETHNOLOGY ,SOCIAL belonging - Abstract
The island of Ikaria in the eastern Aegean is often noted for the longevity of its inhabitants. The author attempted an ethnographic study of cultural factors contributing to this longevity, but was systematically thwarted by gatekeepers. They later learned that such performative refusal has long been part of Ikarians' response to outsiders. This essay argues that these acts of performative refusal are essential sites of co-produced knowledge, even as they challenge some of the author's basic cultural and methodological assumptions. Ostensibly marginalized people on the island deploy these savvy, well-rehearsed performances to resist outsider's attempts at mutual understanding. This performative essay interlaces historical refusals with those the author encountered in their visit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Η κυζικηνή εκδοχή του χρησμού, στην οποία γίνεται αναφορά στην Κυβέλη, ερμηνεύεται μέσα από την ιστορία της Κωνσταντινούπολης και την αντικατάσταση της λατρείας της Μητέρας των Θεών από εκείνη της Παναγίας και άλλων γυναικών αγίων στη Μικρά Ασία., This article discusses the Apollonian oracle that predicted the conversion of a pagan temple into a church (“δόμος”) dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The oracle is linked to the Third Ecumenical Council of Ephesus (431). The latent relationship of Athens and of Apollonius of Tyana to the oracle is also discussed. The Cyzicus version of the oracle, in which reference is made to Cybele, is interpreted through the history of Constantinople and the replacement of the cult of the Mother of Gods by that of the Virgin Mary and of other female saints in Asia Minor.

The aim of this study was to evaluate several sociodemographic, lifestyle, and clinical characteristics of the IKARIA study participants and to find healthy aging trajectories of multimorbidity of Ikarian islanders. During 2009, 1410 people (aged 30+) from Ikaria Island, Greece, were voluntarily enrolled in the IKARIA study. Multimorbidity was defined as the combination of at least two of the following chronic diseases: hypertension; hypercholesterolemia; diabetes; obesity; cancer; CVD; osteoporosis; thyroid, renal, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. A healthy aging index (HAI) ranging from 0 to 100 was constructed using 4 attributes, i.e., depression symptomatology, cognitive function, mobility, and socializing. The prevalence of multimorbidity was 51% among men and 65.5% among women, while the average number of comorbidities was 1.7 ± 1.4 for men and 2.2 ± 1.4 for women. The most prevalent chronic diseases among men with multimorbidity were hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and obesity while among women they were hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and thyroid disease. Multimorbidity was correlated with HAI (Spearman’s rho = −0.127, p < 0.001) and for every 10-unit increase in HAI, participants had 20% lower odds of being multimorbid. Multimorbidity in relation to HAI revealed a different trend across aging among men and women, coinciding only in the seventh decade of life. Aging is usually accompanied by chronic diseases, but multimorbidity seems to also be common among younger adults. However, healthy aging is a lifelong process that may lead to limited co-morbidities across the lifespan.

This work attempted at clarifying the structure of Ikaria using primarily intensive geological mapping combined with structural analysis and a geothermometry approach of Raman spectrometry of carbonaceous material. Foliation over the whole island defines a structural dome cored by high-grade to partially molten rocks. Its exhumation was completed by two top-to-the-N ductile extensional shear zones, operating in the ductile and then the brittle fields, through a single extensional event coeval with progressive strain localization. The thermal structure of the dome with regard to position of ductile shear zones was retrieved using the Raman spectroscopy of carbonaceous material. Peak-metamorphic temperatures range from 390 °C in the upper parts of the structure down to 625 °C in the core of the dome in the vicinity of migmatites and S-type granite. Pioneer in situ U–Th–Pb analyses on monazite performed on the leucosome parts of these rock yielded a 15.7 ± 0.2 Ma age. Ikaria Island thus completes the series of Miocene migmatite-cored Metamorphic Core Complex in the central part of the Aegean domain where a genuine high-temperature zone can be defined as the central Aegean H T zone. There, the extreme stretching of the continental crust is associated with dominantly top-to-the-N kinematics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A cross-sectional observational study was conducted to describe the lifestyle of people ≥90 years, living in Evdilos or Raches, two municipalities of the Greek island of Ikaria, classified a longevity blue zone. The 71 participants were interviewed and underwent the Mediterranean Islands study food frequency questionnaire (MEDIS-FFQ) and the international physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ). The frequency of social contacts was daily for 77.9% of participants, weekly for 16.1%, and monthly for 5.9%. Most participants (90.0%) believed in God, and 81.4% took part in religious events. A total of 62.0% attended Panigiria festivals. Access to primary health care was considered difficult in the past for 66.2% of participants, while 22.1% felt that it remained difficult at the time of the survey. The level of adherence to the Mediterranean diet was 62.7% (61.6% in women and 64.0% in men). Physical activity levels were moderate or high for 71.8% of participants (59.5% of women and 85.3% of men). In conclusion, the participants had a very high level of family solidarity, social interaction and physical activity. The results concerning the Mediterranean diet are less convincing. It would be interesting to study the impact of these factors on the longevity of the oldest old aged people living in Ikaria.

- Abstract
A number of geographical areas have been identified in the world where the proportion of age–validated oldest old, is significantly greater compared with the surrounding regions. They have been termed Blue Zone (BZ) owing to the color used to outline them in the maps of the regions to whom they belong. They are isolated o nearly–isolated population pockets sharing homogeneous genetic background, traditional lifestyle and dietary habits. Up to now, four regions fulfill the criteria to claim a Blue Zone status. They are located in Okinawa, Sardinia, Costa Rica, and Greece. Over the years, the Blue Zones concept has been increasingly accepted by the scientific community and they are no longer considered an anthropological curiosity but an effective model of healthy aging that might be transferred, at least in part, to the post–industrial societies of the 20th century, to face the challenge of aging societies and the rise of healthcare costs.

This paper discusses the unintended consequences for local communities of major EU-wide policies. It focuses on agriculture-related policies, namely on the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), with a secondary focus on animal welfare and food safety legislation. A case study of the Greek island of Ikaria is used to explore this theme. More specifically, the case examines the impacts from the implementation of these policies on the livelihoods of traditional goat pastoralists and their relationship with other inhabitants of Ikaria, as well as on the delicate ecosystem of the island. The effects of progressive reforms of the CAP and the introduction of stringent food safety and accompanying animal welfare rules illustrate the ways in which the law and politics of the EU intertwine and translate into unintended consequences such as environmental degradation and the erosion of traditional practices, leading to loss of community cohesion.

Τα νέα αυτά δεδομένα θέτουν σε νέα βάση την ερμηνεία των ήδη δημοσιευμένων επιγραφών από την περιοχή του Κάμπου και μας οδηγούν σε κάποια ενδιαφέροντα συμπεράσματα αναφορικά με τις σχέσεις των διαφόρων θρησκευτικών κοινοτήτων στο νησί και των μηχανισμών εκχριστιανισμού του ντόπιου πληθυσμού από την Εκκλησία., This paper focuses on the archaeological and epigraphical evidence regarding the transition to Christianity on the island of Ikaria in Late Antiquity. It also presents two unpublished Christian inscriptions from the site ‘Taxiarchis’ at Miliopo, which attest to a so far unknown bishop named Sholastikios and the cult of Archangel Michael in the late 5th/6th century. Considered in comparison with the rest of the available evidence, this material offers new insights into the relations between different religious groups on the island as well as the mechanisms of Christianization on a local and wider level.

Function of Agricultural Terraces in Mediterranean Conditions - Selected Examples From the Island of Ikaria (The Southern Sporades, Greece) The aim of the research was to define the influence of agricultural terraces on slope erosion. There have been selected three plots located on the Greek island Ikaria. On the plots detailed geomorphological mapping was done, spatial relief models were created based on the measurements taken using GPS RTK, georadar profiles were made using RAMAC/GPR and the extent of destruction of terrace resistance walls was evaluated. In comparison with similar forms on other Aegean islands, Ikarian terraces are narrow and high. Their stability depends on: lihtology, slope gradient, height and spatial arrangement of particular terrace steps and the current way of their usage. It was acknowledged that the most stable are the forms created on crystalline schists and gneisses, whereas the slopes, which erode the easiest, are the terraced ones consisting of carbonate rocks. The obtained results indicate that on Ikaria similarly to numerous other regions the most significant factor facilitating erosion on the terraced slopes is the cessation of their agricultural usage.

International audience; This work attempted at clarifying the structure of Ikaria using primarily intensive geological mapping combined with structural analysis and a geothermometry approach of Raman spectrometry of carbonaceous material. Foliation over the whole island defines a structural dome cored by high-grade to partially-molten rocks. Pioneer in situ U-Th-Pb analyses on monazite performed on the leucosome parts of these rock yielded a 15.7 ± 0.2 Ma age. Ikaria Island thus completes the series of Miocene migmatite-cored Metamorphic Core Complex in the central part of the Aegean domain where a genuine high-temperature zone can be defined as the central Aegean HT zone. There, the extreme stretching of the continental crust is associated with dominantly top-to-the-N kinematics.

Η ειδική ενέργεια εξαρτάται, μεταξύ άλλων, από το επίπεδο των δυνάμεων που αναπτύσσονται στα κοπτικά εργαλεία, ενώ η φθορά των κοπτικών εξαρτάται κυρίως από την ορυκτολογική συγκρότηση του πετρώματος., The subject of this thesis is the laboratory investigation on the mechanical excavation of orthogneiss from Ikaria, Greece. The thesis has been prepared at the Laboratory of Excavation Engineering of NTUA’s School of Mining & Metallurgical Engineering. Aim of the thesis is the laboratory estimation of: 1) the forces developing on the cutting tools during the cutting process. 2) the specific energy index of the rock mentioned above. Specific energy is the energy or work required to cut a unit volume of rock. 3) the basic mechanical properties of the rock, as they are determined from the following laboratory tests: - Uniaxial compression test. - Brazilian tensile strength test. - Hardness test, using the Shore scleroscope. - The Cerchar abrasiveness test. - Ultrasonic test. Forces acting on rock cutting tools can also be predicted from i) theoretical models such as cutting theories which study fracture and cutting mechanisms, ii) empirical and semi-empirical equations derived from case studies. The cutting forces are of major importance in designing rock excavation machines for a given advance-production rate or in predicting the performance of a given machine. Laboratory cutting tests are performed in order to simulate tool-rock interaction. The optimum excavating parameters of the cutterhead (depth of penetration, cutter spacing etc.) are estimated through parametric analysis. Basic criteria in the optimization process are the criterion of the lowest specific energy and that of the least wear of the cutting tool.

Nowadays there is an abandonment of conventional energy and a simultaneous shift to renewable energy. From the combined use of two or more renewable, usually, the resulting energy hybrid power systems. In the present study analyzed a hybrid system which uses two sources of renewable energy, which water and air. The analysis of this hybrid system is based on data from the hybrid under construction project of Ikaria. Such systems are islands designated as Non systems $ iasyndedemenon Islands, are autonomous, drawing energy with which the islands they are "blessed" than other inland areas like the wind. The first chapter is a brief description of the principles underpinning the construction of hydroelectric and wind power stations and given the definition of hybrid power systems. Chapters two three a.m. described fundamentals for the hybrid project Ikaria and operating regulations for this. Chapter 4 sets out the rationale relied on simulations and the results, charts, and conclusions drawn from them. Here are the Annex and the literature.

DAN ABRAMS (ABC NEWS) (Off-camera) Good evening, and thanks for joining us. What if there was a place, an idyllic island, where residents don't go to gyms, don't take any sort of special pills or adhere to fad diets, and yet they live longer and have a quality of life many far younger souls could only envy. It's certainly hard to believe a fountain of youth outside of mythology or movies, but then again it may also be hard to believe what my "Nightline" co-anchor Bill Weir actually found when he traveled to an amazing place in the Aegean Sea.
