This article, consisting of 31 illustrations with annotation, presents the result of an artistic research project revolving around the question of how to use one's power as a creator of humour. The reader/viewer is presented with insight into the life and thinking of cartoonist/artistic researcher Self-reflexive Steve, who engages in self-investigation because he is conscious of the virtues as well as the dangers of humour. In a globalised, diverse, and democratic world, it is important to consider different sensibilities within society. Self-reflexive Steve always regarded humour as a form of connecting communication, because when people are able to laugh together, they understand each other. However, Self-reflexive Steve increasingly wonders whether he has achieved his set targets, as he primarily acts for a captive audience and creates his humorous drawings from a safe stand-off in his ivory tower. His publications are always endorsed by the editorials of the magazines he is working for and this within a society where humour makers are protected and esteemed. However, in today's society humour is frequently used to divide. As a cartoonist/researcher, Self-reflexive Steve explores the limits of his medium, deliberately going off the rails at times. As a humour maker he seeks to reclaim the right to use fantasy, lies, distortions, exaggerations and wild associations from those in power who deploy these qualities of humour to divide and rule. An overlooked fragmentary Latin text preserved in the Corpus of Roman Land Surveyors proves to be a translation of a lost branch of the Aratean commentary tradition. Stripped of the classicizing veneer mistakenly applied by earlier editors, the fragment can be recognized as the work of an unknown and inept late-antique Translator, perhaps working within a generation of the fragment's earliest manuscript witness, the Codex Arcerianus. The branch of the commentary tradition used by this Translator made use of Euclid 'the Sicilian', an authority now absent from the surviving tradition: if this Euclid is identical with the famous geometer, as argued here, we may have radical new evidence for his homeland, hitherto unknown. The Aratean manuscript used by the Translator was equipped with interlinear Latin glosses and with illustrations of a type otherwise unattested in the surviving Aratean tradition. This editorial gathers together a transitional moment within the field of illustration research and pedagogy, as well as within larger daily contexts that presume our physical transaction with screen technologies as interfaces to practices of illustration. Curiosity comes through as a motivation for our movement as bodies through time and space. We find many examples in contemporary cultural production, including and especially in examples of illustration, of a turn towards the body and its senses as being a more aware, more divergent and more vibrant site of reception and potential. Underlining what I have noticed as the reckoning of embodiment that characterizes current directions in illustration practice, research and pedagogy, I introduce Affect Theory as a backdrop to graphic medicine, but it is a theory that also seems compatible with other examples of embodied illustration. As it relates to our theme of 'transitus', crossing over is, I propose, an embodied action, a 'shimmering passage' through which we journey towards an 'ethico-aesthetics', a 'bloom space' of the body's and illustration's potentials. Leela Corman is an American cartoonist and illustrator. She won a Xeric grant in 1999 for her graphic novel Queen's Day. This article discusses a picture book, The Beautifull [sic] Cassandra, that was published by Juvenilia Press in 2021. The text was written by Jane Austen, most probably in 1788, and was edited and illustrated by Juliet McMaster some 200 years later. My key questions are: What are the characteristics of Austen's text? What are the strategies that McMaster uses to illustrate the text? How do we evaluate the picture book as a whole? This study explores the potential of illustrated barcodes of picturebooks in the educational context. The study reviews the modification by artists of conventional and mandatory barcodes into creative barcode placements in picturebooks. By raising awareness of the aesthetic subtleties of barcodes, the paper articulates how these attractive and ironical peritextual elements may have pedagogical applicability. The study brings to the surface these invisible artistic elements to better appreciate their aesthetic potential for read alouds. For exploring the rich diversity of depictions, a corpus of 500 illustrated barcodes was grouped and analyzed into categories with the creators' explanation for the use of these artistic peritextual features. Findings based on quantitative and qualitative content analysis suggest that illustrated barcodes comprise significant information that educators may use during picturebook read aloud sessions. Educators familiar with the hidden information within illustrated barcodes may guide children into exploring these peritextual features and talk about them during interactive storytime. In the following article, the attention is focused on the development of varied illustration styles by Polish illustrators. Examining past eras that lead to examples from recent years, the representative books are marked by high artistic value, in many cases confirmed also by national and international awards as well as by the popular acclaim they have been granted. This article presents a cross-cultural, diachronic, and comparative analysis of the representational aspects of picture-writing through the use of hieroglyphs in ancient Egypt and their revival in early Renaissance Europe. The two phenomena will be discussed with a focus on the functionality of the sign within the non-textual sphere, highlighting such similarities as the glottographic nature of the word-signs and the subsequent unified visuality of text and image. It is suggested that the similarities are the by-product of picture-writing: when words are expressed with pictograms rather than with letters, the following step is to benefit from their dual function, as both text and image. The article discusses problems related to proper name entries in the "Polish Academy of Sciences Great Dictionary of Polish". The dictionary has been under construction since 2007 and is available at the following URL: http://wsjp.pl. The first part of the text is devoted to the issue of reasonableness of including proper names in general dictionaries. Critical opinions on the issue raised in the past are recalled and discussed. What follows is a presentation on how the description of proper names, especially geographical names and their derivatives, was envisaged in the early stages of works on the aforementioned dictionary. This vision is then compared with the actual state of the dictionary as of 2020. In this age of visual media, the picture book and graphic novel are more important than ever. Drawing on almost 30 years of experience working with children's publishers, illustrator Anne Spudvilas discusses her process and the decisions made when choosing and illustrating a text. Working with authors, including Margaret Wild and Isobelle Carmody, has called for many different approaches to stories aimed at both primary and secondary students. In any literary style or period, there are always common factors and contexts between poets and writers that make up the color and public space of that period. One of these contexts are elements and themes that are used in poetic images; Elements such as nature, ordinary and peripheral elements, literary subtleties in image making, etc. are the themes that can lead us to obvious differences between the illustrations of each period in each period and can finally be a basis for evaluation. The artistic and imaginative values and features of each period become and lead us to the important point that the image is a representation of sensory effect in language. This sensory effect also includes: the poet's thoughts, feelings and sensory experiences. The importance of illustration and illustration is such that, in the opinion of many, any change in the illustration of the world also leads to a change in the mechanism of the world. What constitutes the basis of the present research is the study and study of the illustration processes of old and new Persian poetry in two ways, method and subject of the image. The results of the present study show that although the overall image structure of Persian poetry from ancient times to modern times has been based on one principle, but the subject of these images is different in two periods so that the image in ancient poetry is based on "nature and imagination". We use a mechanized verification system, PVS, to examine the argument from Anselm's Proslogion Chapter III, the so-called "Modal Ontological Argument." We consider several published formalizations for the argument and show they are all essentially similar. Furthermore, we show that the argument is trivial once the modal axioms are taken into account. Existing work on literacy and affect has posed important questions for how we think about meanings and how and where they get made. The authors contribute to such work by focusing on the relation between text and affect. This is a topic that has received insufficient attention in recent work but is of pressing concern for education as text interweaves in new ways with human activity, through social media, surveillance capitalism, and artificial intelligence—ways that can be unpredictable and poorly understood. Adopting a sociomaterial sensibility that foregrounds the relations between bodies (people and things), the authors provide conceptual tools for considering how texts affect and are affected by the heterogeneous entanglements from which they emerge. In situating their argument, the authors outline influential readings of Spinoza's theories of affect, explore how these have been mobilized in literacy research, and identify how text has been accommodated within such research. Using texts from a political episode in the United Kingdom, the authors explore the idea of social‐material‐textual affects to articulate relations among humans, nonhumans, meaning making, and literacies. The authors conclude by identifying four ways in which text participates in what happens, raising questions about how different materializations of text (or indeed "not text") are significant to the diversifying communicative practices that inflect social, cultural, economic, and political life. We, in this paper, extending the fabric of hierarchic estimation for mean introduced by Agrawal and Sthapit (1997) and carried forward successively by Panda and Sahoo (2015) and Panda and Das (2018) to the dimension of variance estimation, propose a new ratio estimator for the estimation of population variance using simple random sampling without replacement (SRSWOR) scheme. The novelty of the proposed estimator of order is that it is predictive in form under the assumption of balanced sampling. Conditions under which the proposed estimator with optimal fares better than the usual variance estimator and the ratio estimator due to Isaki (1983) have been arrived at. In addition to this, the supremacy of the proposed estimator over the one due to Kadilar and Cingi (2006) is established numerically. Theoretical findings are supported by numerical illustration. While the responsibility of international organizations and their member states has been on the agenda of courts and scholars for decades, the adoption of the Articles on the Responsibility of International Organizations (ARIO) by the International Law Commission in 2011 has given new impetus to the debate. Nikolaos Voulgaris' Allocating International Responsibility between Member States and International Organizations is one of the few general books on the topic that post-dates the adoption of the ARIO. Despite its broad title, however, the focus of the book is rather narrow: it concentrates on the responsibility of an international organization or a state in connection with the act of a/another state or international organization, which Voulgaris describes as 'indirect responsibility'. Considering the book's extensive discussion of the function and nature of international responsibility, this review essay first submits that the book's actual aim is a rethinking of indirect responsibility. Second, it examines Voulgaris' reconceptualization of the pertinent provisions on indirect responsibility in terms of what he calls the 'complicity' and 'derivative responsibility' models. This review essay concludes that the reader who expects detailed guidance on the allocation of responsibility between international organizations and their member states will be left wanting. Instead, the interaction between international organizations and their member states serves as an illustration for the book's insightful analysis of the under-theorized provisions on international responsibility in connection with the act of another. This paper presents new editions of five anonymously written pilgrimage guides to the Holy Land dating from the twelfth to the early fourteenth century. In each case the existing nineteenth-century editions of these were based on a single manuscript, but in all but one it has now been possible to consider variant and sometimes more detailed versions. These have not only revealed new information about a number of the places and buildings described in the guides but have also provided further illustration of how such texts developed. The paper attempts to investigate the impact of illustration in the making of world literature in Odia. Illustration served as a medium of expression, mode of storytelling, an element of embellishment to the narratives, and an agent of advertisement, but remained specific to children's literature. The current paper attempts to examine whether illustration served as a promotional tool or as a medium of translation, in a world literature series titled 'Biswa Sahitya Granthamala' (collection of the world literary series in Odia translation), published in the twentieth century by a renowned Indian publisher, Granthamandir, Odisha. The author examines the abridged illustrated novel, 'Bichitra Desha re Alice' (Alice in Wonderland) based on the theories and techniques of illustration. The article relates to the emergence of the practice of illustration in Odisha, a provincial state of India, and proceeds to discuss its' significant function in the world literature series. It is a qualitative study based on the primary sources, i.e. the book published under the Biswa Sahitya series. The study revealed that the publishers followed significant patterns and techniques, and observed several informative functions of illustration in the series. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Though Daoism has different interpretations, we can find a common theme from Yan Zhu, Lao Tzu, and Chuang Tzu: all three of them focus on preserving life, and claiming that uselessness is a, or the, only concrete way toward it. Chuang Tzu even held the idea of the uniformity of all things. However, uselessness could lead to contrary acts, or to dilemmas which may be very difficult for a person to avoid or resolve, especially in modern times. Every parcel of goods shipped across the Atlantic, from the early modern era through the nineteenth century (and beyond), was accompanied by a unique bill of lading. The bill of lading, an essential piece of commercial paperwork, attested that a certain set of goods had been “shipped in good order” and reminded the shipmaster that it was his job to keep them that way. Legally speaking, the bill of lading was a con- tract, a receipt, and a document of title, all in one. Though the legal power of bills of lading depended entirely on their text, American bills nevertheless began in the early eighteenth century to feature decorations, embellishments, and illustrations. The most popular was a ship sailing inside the embellished letter S of the word Shipped. This image, and others like it, helped the bills’ bearers visualize how material objects were caught up in conceptual frameworks of ownership and nationality. Such images thereby strengthened connections among objects, owners, laws, and nations. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, new visual elements, such as flags, human figures, and seascapes, began to appear on American bills of lading, revealing evolving visions of the relationships among commercial goods, vessels, people, nations, and institutions. Summary: We present a novel model averaging method to construct a prediction function in semi‐parametric form. The weighted sum of candidate semi‐parametric models is taken as a prediction of the mean response. Marginal non‐parametric regression models are approximated by spline basis functions and we apply a Bayesian Monte Carlo approach to fit such models. The optimal model weight parameters are estimated by minimising the least squares criterion with an explicit form. We implement our method in extensive simulation studies and illustrate its use with two real medical data examples. Our methods are demonstrated to be more accurate than both classical parametric model averaging methods and existing semi‐parametric regression models. Studies of conversational humor in intercultural settings have focused largely on illustrating how participants can successfully draw on humor to build rapport. However, it is nevertheless clear that attempts at humor can also go awry in settings in which participants come from different cultural backgrounds. In this paper, we focus on the responses of American and Australian participants to playful or light-hearted comments on, or responses to, another speaker's just prior serious talk, which are designed to initiate a non-serious side sequence, or what we term "jocular quips". Drawing from a comparative analysis of thirty recordings of initial interactions involving participants from ostensibly the same (AmAm; AusAus) and different (AmAus) backgrounds, we report our finding that affiliative responses to jocular quips are more prevalent in the "intracultural" dyads (AmAm, AusAus), while non-affiliative responses are more frequent in the "intercultural" dyads (AmAus). We suggest this is due to troubles in accomplishing particularistic co-membership and shared critical, mocking attitudes that are attributed to, or directed at that category. We conclude that Americans and Australians are not "divided by a common language" as such, but rather that affiliating with jocular quips in initial interactions is contingent on the locally situated accomplishment of particular membership categories and predicates associated with these categories. Illustration may be thought of as a picture relating to the text in a containing medium, such as a book. Here, however, the objective is to reconsider some of the conceptual conventions surrounding the pictorial genre, by way of using illustrations as productive of their own metalanguage or of a language that refers to illustration as a media phenomenon. Illustrations taken from the Swedish nineteenth-century magazine Ny Illustrerad Tidning are inserted into a framework of historiographic texts on the genre of illustration, by nineteenth-century writers such as Henry Blackburn and P. G. Hamerton, and present concepts about media and media interrelations, most notably W. J. T. Mitchell's 'imagetext'. Rather than test the illustrations' capability of accommodating the juxtaposed texts and concepts, the study makes a case for their ability to counteract—negotiate, complicate, adjust, sidestep, or discard—the terms initially on offer. From a close analysis of the illustrations' media properties, in relation to the conceptual material, the study solicits from the illustrations a metalanguage that defers the conventional separation of image and text, and displaces the idea of an original preceding the medium of reproduction. In conclusion, the study argues for two aspects that give cause to reconsider some conventional assumptions about the genre of illustration and move beyond the concept of 'imagetext': counteraction as providing a methodological strategy for knowledge production beyond the confines of the containing medium; and the mediality of illustration as a three-part relation between the image-text-media of reproduction rather than the two-part relation of the image-text.
