The catfishes are a group of economically important freshwater fish in China, which in recent years have suffered heavy losses as a result of bacterial outbreaks. In this study, we examined the diversity of the microbiome of infected skin mucus of yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) and channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) and analyzed the bacterial pathogens. We found several common pathogenic bacteria, such as Aeromonas spp., Vibrio spp., Moraxella spp. and Proteus spp. present in both fish species, but with significantly different bacterial community structures. We isolated and cultured Aeromonas veronii and Proteus mirabilis and validated their infectivity in zebrafish (Danio rerio) and yellow catfish. Intraperitoneal injection of either bacteria into zebrafish, but not immersion, caused 100% mortality and ovary fragmentation. Yellow catfish was more sensitive than zebrafish with 100% mortality in the immersion challenges with A. veronii or P. mirabilis, and with a higher abundance of A. veronii in the P. mirabilis-challenged group compared to control. To our knowledge, this is the first study on the pathogenicity of P. mirabilis in yellow catfish, and the results will help to develop effective strategies for the disease prevention and control in catfish farming.

Coastal rivers and estuaries provide habitat and migratory corridors for freshwater estuarine-opportunists. We evaluated movement patterns of 61 blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus) in the tidal York and Rappahannock rivers in Virginia, USA with acoustic telemetry from July 2015 to June 2016. To evaluate river-specific movements, we utilized a multistate Cormack–Jolly–Seber (CJS) model within a Bayesian framework to estimate probabilities of detection and transition (movement) among established salinity zones (i.e., tidal-fresh (0‰–0.5‰), oligohaline (>0.5‰–5‰), mesohaline (>5‰–18‰)). We considered flow as an environmental covariate. Despite high site fidelity in tidal-fresh zones, some individuals displayed movements into oligohaline and mesohaline habitats indicative of partial migration. Once downstream movement occurred, the probability of staying in the new salinity zone was higher than the probability of movements to other salinity zones. In the Rappahannock River only, movement upstream from mesohaline habitats was associated with below average flow. As flow increased, the probability of remaining in oligohaline and mesohaline zones increased. Our study shows blue catfish can move into downstream areas of tidal rivers with elevated salinities and that increased freshwater flow may allow them to remain in these habitats for extended durations.

This study aimed to determine the bioavailability and pharmacokinetic parameters of sulfadiazine (SDZ) in channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) following oral gavage and intravenous injection. The healthy channel catfish were orally and intravenously administrated with SDZ solution at doses of 50 and 5 mg/kg, respectively. Plasma samples were determined by ultra-performance liquid chromatography with an ultraviolet detector. The results demonstrated that the concentration-time profile of SDZ after oral dosing was best described by a one-compartmental open model with first-order absorption. The absorption half-life (t1/2Kα ), the elimination half-life (t1/2Ke ), and the area under concentration-time profile (AUC0-∞ ) were estimated to be 0.87 h, 29.04 h, and 1311.72 mg.h/L, respectively. After intravenous administration, the concentration-time curve of SDZ conformed to a two-compartmental open model without absorption. The distribution half-life (t1/2α ), the elimination half-life (t1/2β ), the apparent distribution volume (Vss ), the total clearance (CL), and AUC0-∞ were calculated to be 0.19 h, 14.24 h, 0.36 L/kg, 0.018 L/h/kg, and 277.12 mg.h/L, respectively. Finally, the bioavailability was estimated to be 47.33%. This study will provide some useful information for the modification of the dosage form of SDZ in aquaculture, and is partly beneficial for appropriate use of SDZ in the future.

Long-term storage of oogonia and germ-line stem cells provides an alternative to the limitations associated with cryopreserving eggs of important fish species. These cell types are less vulnerable to the stresses of freezing. Cryopreservation has enormous potential for aquaculture advancement, but protocols must be developed for each species and cell type since its success hinges on various input factors. Blue Catfish Ictalurus furcatus were selected as the test species in this study because of the need to improve fry production of Blue Catfish ♂ × Channel Catfish I. punctatus ♀ hybrids, which can be facilitated by storing oogonia in gene banks. Our objective was to develop a freezing protocol for oogonia of this species. We tested different permeating and nonpermeating cryoprotectants, concentrations of these agents, and freezing rates. We proved that all three factors influenced postthaw recovery of oogonia. Of the permeating cryoprotectants, 1.0 M dimethyl sulfoxide resulted in the most live cells with the highest viability percentages, and adding 0.2 M lactose with 10% egg yolk further improved the results. There were also specific interactions in which the effects of concentration and freezing rate varied among the cryoprotectant treatments. The most effective freezing rate was −1.0°C/min, and cell viability was reduced at −2.5°C/min and −5.0°C/min. From these results, we propose adding 1.0 M dimethyl sulfoxide with 0.2 M lactose and 10% egg yolk to cryomedia and freezing it at a rate of −1.0°C/min. By developing a cryopreservation protocol for a commonly cultured catfish, this work may guide the development of protocols for other species of interest.

The bacterium Edwardsiella piscicida causes significant losses in global aquaculture, particularly channel (Ictalurus punctatus) × blue (I. furcatus) hybrid catfish cultured in the south-eastern United States. Emergence of E. piscicida in hybrid catfish is worrisome given current industry trends towards increased hybrid production. The project objectives were to assess intraspecific genetic variability of E. piscicida isolates recovered from diseased channel and hybrid catfish in Mississippi; and determine virulence associations among genetic variants. Repetitive extragenic palindromic sequence-based PCR (rep-PCR) using ERIC I and II primers was used to screen 158 E. piscicida diagnostic case isolates. A subsample of 39 E. piscicida isolates, representing predominant rep-PCR profiles, was further characterized using BOX and (GTG)5 rep-PCR primers, virulence gene assessment and multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) targeting housekeeping genes gyrb, pgi and phoU. The MLSA provided greater resolution than rep-PCR, revealing 5 discrete phylogroups that correlated similarly with virulence gene profiles. Virulence assessments using E. piscicida representatives from each MLSA group resulted in 14-day cumulative mortality ranging from 22% to 54% and 63 to 72% in channel and hybrid fingerlings, respectively. Across all phylogroups, mortality was higher in hybrid catfish (p < .05), supporting previous work indicating E. piscicida is an emerging threat to hybrid catfish aquaculture in the south-eastern United States.

Invasive alien species often affect native ecosystems worldwide. In Japan, the channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus is an invasive species in rivers. However, information regarding its feeding habits in rivers around dam reservoirs is still scarce. Thus, in this study, we assessed the feeding habits of I. punctatus collected from the Nunome River, a secondary tributary of the Yodo River, downstream of the Nunome Dam reservoir. Standard length and weight of the collected individuals were measured, and their stomach contents were analyzed under a stereomicroscope to identify prey species. Moreover, stable isotope analysis was conducted to determine their trophic niche. Overall, I. punctatus was shown to feed on a variety of food resources derived from the riparian forest and river ecosystem; in particular, algae represented 78.8% of its stomach contents. However, stable isotope analysis suggested that I. punctatus depended on benthic insects and fish to ensure adequate body composition, whereas algae were not assimilated by I. punctatus. Among benthic insects, I. punctatus relied on trichopteran larvae such as Macrostemum radiatum, which appears downstream of the dam reservoir and utilizes plankton algae from the dam. In conclusion, these findings provide additional clues for a better understanding of I. punctatus feeding activity and its relationship with its surrounding ecosystem.

Blue catfish alloherpesvirus (BCAHV) is a novel virus isolated from the blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus). To date, the ultrastructure, virulence and immunogenicity of BCAHV have not been reported. Given the importance of blue catfish in producing channel ♀ (I. punctatus) × ♂ blue (I. furcatus) catfish hybrids and the increasing demand for hybrid catfish in the US catfish industry, the susceptibility of blue, channel and hybrid catfish to BCAHV was assessed. Further, the cross-protective potential of BCAHV against Ictalurid herpesvirus 1 (IcHV1) was investigated in channel and hybrid catfish that survive BCAHV exposure. Neutralization assays revealed BCAHV is refractive (neutralization index [NI] = 0) to anti-IcHV1 monoclonal antibody Mab 95, compared to IcHV1 (NI = 1.8). Exposure of blue catfish fingerling to 1.3 × 105 TCID50 /L BCAHV produced cumulative mortality of 51.67 ± 0.70% and pathologic changes similar to those of channel catfish virus disease. No mortality was observed in channel or hybrid catfish. Twenty-eight days post-challenge, surviving channel and hybrid catfish were exposed to 9.4 × 104 TCID50 /L IcHV1 (LC50 dose), resulting in 100% relative per cent survival compared to naive cohorts. These data provide baseline information for BCAHV and lay the groundwork for future studies. Data also identify BCAHV as a potential vaccine candidate against IcHV1. Based on host range and immunogenicity evaluations, in addition to genome sequence data from previous studies, BCAHV should be given consideration as a new species of Ictalurivirus.

The genus Henneguya is the second largest within the class Myxosporea, which infects marine and freshwater fish. One hundred Clarias gariepinus specimens were collected alive from a branch of the Nile River in Kafrelsheikh, Egypt. Microscopic and molecular procedures were used to describe how Henneguya fusiformis infects the ovaries of C. gariepinus. The infected fish showed no pathogenic changes except for macroscopic creamy whitish nodules in their ovaries with the highest prevalence during the spring season. The mature spores are spindle-shaped. The total spore length, spore body length and width are 53.4 ± 0.8 (52.5–54.3) µm, 29.8 ± 0.5 (29.2–30.4) µm and 6.5 ± 0.3 (6.1–6.9) µm, respectively. The spore anterior end consisted of two equal polar capsules, located in a tandem position, each one measuring 4.2 × 2.1 µm. The polar filament formed a coil with 6–8 turns. The measurement of the spore end with two extended processes was 24.3 ± 0.4 (23.9–24.8) µm. Phylogenetic analyses of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene sequence revealed that H. fusiformis are clustered together with other myxobolids that are histozoic in channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, and Asian Redtail catfish, Hemibagrus nemurus” (Clariidae) in the United States and Malaysia, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first record of H. fusiformis in Egypt. Additionally, our study is the first record of H. fusiformis in the ovaries of C. gariepinus.

Abstract The skeleton of Siluriformes is characterized by several autapomorphies, including secondary absence, extreme modification, and purported fusion of several ossifications. Although well documented in adults, information on skeletal development in catfishes is relatively sparse and typically focused on particular regions of the skeleton (e.g., Weberian apparatus). To further our understanding of the siluriform skeleton, I document the development of the entire skeleton in two ictalurid species, Ictalurus punctatus (channel catfish) and Noturus gyrinus (tadpole madtom) from five days pre-hatch to adult. I reexamine the homologies of bones previously hypothesized to represent compound elements in catfishes as well as an additional element only known to occur in some ictalurids. Development of the skeleton is complete in I. punctatus at 22.4 mm SL and almost complete in N. gyrinus (except dorsal- and anal-fin distal radials) at 14.1 mm SL. No signs of ontogenetic fusion were observed in any of the purported compound elements. Previous hypotheses of the homology of these elements and of additional ossifications are reviewed in light of developmental information obtained herein. No dermal parietal component is present at any stage in the so-called parieto-supraoccipital. The bone is the supraoccipital which ossifies from two lateral centers of ossification which later fuse, rather than from a median center. The 'posttemporo-supracleithrum' originates from a single center of ossification and represents the supracleithrum. The posttemporal is present in ictalurids and many other catfishes as a canal-bearing bone between the supracleithrum and the pterotic, a bone sometimes identified as the extrascapular. The extrascapular is missing in catfishes. Ictalurids have an additional dermal bone above the posttemporal, which is either an independently ossifying fragment of the posttemporal or a neoformation restricted to some members of this family. The single chondral bone of the pectoral girdle originates from a single center of ossification that represents the coracoid. The scapula is missing in catfishes. Dorsal-fin distal radial 2 is absent in catfishes and the foramen of dorsal-fin spine 2 is formed from modifications to the base of the fin-ray itself. Unlike loricarioid catfishes, the urohyal of ictalurids originates solely as an ossification of the sternohyoideus tendons. The anteriormost infraorbital element ossifies from a single center of ossification around the infraorbital sensory canal and represents the lacrimal. The antorbital is missing in catfishes. Finally, skeletal development of I. punctatus is compared to that available for other otophysans, including the cypriniforms Danio rerio and Enteromius holotaenia and the characiform Salminus brasiliensis.

This study isolated CFI gene from Pelteobagrus fulvidraco and named it PfCFI. The cDNA of PfCFI is 2374 bp long, including a 52 bp 5′ untranslated sequence, a 222 bp 3′ untranslated sequence, and an open reading frame (ORF) of 2100 bp encoding polypeptide consisting of 699 amino acids. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the PfCFI was closely related to CFI of Ictalurus punctatus. Real-time quantitative reverse transcription-PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis indicate that there is the PfCFI gene which expressed in all the rest of tested tissues in varied levels, and mainly distributed in liver and least in heart. The reseachers induce the expressions level of PfCFI gene in liver, spleen, head kidney and blood at different points in time after challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and polyriboinosinic polyribocytidylic acid (poly I:C), respectively. Together these results suggested that CFI gene plays an important role in resistance to pathogens in yellow catfish immunity.

Sustainability of channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus ♀ × blue catfish, Ictalurus furcatus ♂ hybrid aquaculture relies on new innovative technologies to maximize fry output. Transplanting spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) from blue catfish into channel catfish hosts has the potential to greatly increase gamete availability and improve hybrid catfish fry outputs. Cryopreservation would make these cells readily accessible for xenogenesis, but a freezing protocol for blue catfish testicular tissues has not yet been fully developed. Therefore, the objectives of this experiment were to identify the best permeating [dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), ethylene glycol (EG), glycerol, methanol] and non-permeating (lactose or trehalose with egg yolk or BSA) cryoprotectants, their optimal concentrations, and the best freezing rates (−0.5, −1.0, −5.0, −10 °C/min until −80 °C) that yield the highest number of viable type A spermatogonia cells. Results showed that all of these factors had significant impacts on post-thaw cell production and viability. DMSO was the most efficient permeating cryoprotectant at a concentration of 1.0 M. The optimal concentration of each cryoprotectant depended on the specific cryoprotectant due to interactions between the two factors. Of the non-permeating cryoprotectants, 0.2 M lactose with egg yolk consistently improved type A spermatogonia production and viability beyond that of the 1.0 M DMSO control. The overall best freezing rate was consistent at −1 °C/min, but similar results were obtained using −0.5 °C/min. Overall, we recommend cryopreserving blue catfish testicular tissues in 1.0 M DMSO with 0.2 M lactose and egg yolk at a rate of either -0.5 or −1 °C/min to achieve the best cryopreservation outcomes. Continued development of cryopreservation protocols for blue catfish and other species will make spermatogonia available for xenogenic applications and genetic improvement programs.

Cold-anesthetization waterless live fish preservation is considered a promising alternative strategy. This work investigates the effects of temperature chilling rates of 2, 4, and 6 °C/h on serum biological parameters and muscular chemical composition of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus and the influence of waterless preservation time (6, 9, 12, 15, and 18 h) on survival after subjection to three chilling rates. Fish subjected to increasing chilling rates showed lower survival and shorter preservation time. The research results revealed that a temperature gradient drop of 2 °C/h was conducive to maintaining the activity of creatinine (CREA), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), and pyruvate kinase (PK). The serum aspartic transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) activity dramatically increased after anesthetization. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and CREA, whose activity is sensitive to hydropenic conditions, increased significantly after waterless preservation and showed a slight reversal after recovery. Anesthetization caused a significant decrease in protein and fat in muscle, while no obvious trend was observed among different chilling groups. Muscle glycogen (MG) and water-holding capacity (WHC) decreased after anesthetization, then increased after preservation for 12 h, and decreased again after recovery for 24 h. The muscle pH showed the opposite trend. It can be concluded that the whole process resulted in marked changes in the muscle chemical composition. The development of a new green method for anesthetization of live channel catfish for long-term waterless preservation in the present work helps to determine the physiological changes that occur during preservation, providing an effective reference for investigation in other freshwater fish.

The bighead catfish (Clarias macrocephalus) and channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) are freshwater species in the Siluriformes order. C. macrocephalus has both gills and modified gill structures serving as an air-breathing organ (ABO), while I. punctatus does not possess such an organ, and cannot breathe in air, providing an excellent model for studying the molecular basis of ABO development in teleost fish. To investigate the critical time window for the development of air-breathing function, seven development stages were selected based on hypoxia challenge results, and RNA-seq was performed upon C. macrocephalus to compare with the non-air-breathing I. punctatus. Five-hundred million reads were generated and 25,239 expressed genes were annotated in C. macrocephalus. Among those, 8675 genes were differentially expressed across developmental stages. Comparative genomic analysis identified 1458 C. macrocephalus specific genes, which were absent in I. punctatus. Gene network and protein-protein interaction analyses identified 26 key hub genes involved in the air-breathing function. Three top candidate genes, mb, ngb, hbae, are mainly associated with oxygen carrying, oxygen binding, and heme binding activities. Our study provides a rich data set for exploring the genomic basis of air-breathing function in C. macrocephalus and offers insights into the adaption to hypoxic environments.

The channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus, Rafinesque) ovary (CCO) cell line is the standard cell line used for channel catfish diagnostics. Next-gen sequencing studies of a virus cultured in the CCO cells revealed mitochondrial sequences matching those of brown bullhead (Ameiurus nebulosus, Lesueur). Therefore, we systematically performed partial cytochrome oxidase 1 gene sequencing of several sources of the CCO cell line and all matched the brown bullhead and not the channel catfish.

Cathelicidins are a class of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) known to possess rapid and direct antimicrobial activities against a variety of microorganisms. Recently identified cathelicidins derived from alligator and sea snake were found to be more effective in inhibiting microbial growth than other AMPs previously characterized. The ability of these two cathelicidins along with the peptides, cecropin and pleurocidin, to protect channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus, Rafinesque) and hybrid catfish (I. punctatus ♀ × blue catfish, Ictalurus furcatus, Valenciennes ♂) against Edwardsiella ictaluri, one of the most prevalent pathogens affecting commercial catfish industry, was investigated. Cathelicidin-injected fish (50 µg ml-1 fish-1 ) that were simultaneously challenged with E. ictaluri through bath immersion at a concentration of ~1 × 106 CFU/ml had increased survival rates compared with other peptide treatments and the infected control. Bacterial numbers were also reduced in the liver and kidney of channel catfish and hybrid catfish in the cathelicidin treatments 24 hr post-infection. After 8 days of challenge, serum was collected to determine immune-related parameters such as bactericidal activity, lysozyme, serum protein, albumin and globulin. These immune-related parameters were significantly elevated in fish injected with the two cathelicidins as compared to other peptide treatments. These results indicate that cathelicidins derived from alligator and sea snake can stimulate immunity and enhance the resistance to E. ictaluri infection in channel catfish and hybrid catfish.

In the process of work on the reproduction of the channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus (Raf.) In the conditions of LLC «Belovsky Fish Industry», the main problem was the timely production of high-quality offspring, associated with differences in preparation for spawning of females and males. In this regard, the purpose of the work: to develop and test various options for carrying out spawning campaigns, including those using various drugs for hormonal stimulation of manufacturers. The results of testing Nerestin preparations in 2006–2008 are presented. In 2006, the drug Nerestin-5x (N5x) was tested. The main problem was identified: 80% of the injected females matured, but the passive males did not start fertilization. It was proposed to adjust the total dose of H5x for females towards a decrease, depending on the degree of their initial readiness, and for males — towards an increase. In 2007, drugs H5x and H7A were tested. A change in the injection scheme of males in 2007 compared to 2006 (an increase in the total dose to the norm of females, but with the use of the drug H5x, and not H6A or H7A during the first two injections) increased the readiness of males for spawning slightly. In 2008, males were brought into the hatchery one month earlier than females, increasing the maturation period of males and changing the temperature rise schedule to prepare for spawning. The drug H7A was used. Despite the increase in the total dose of H7A for males to the total dose for females, their readiness for spawning was still insufficient. To a greater extent, the readiness of males was influenced by an increase in the period of keeping and feeding. The conclusion is drawn that preparations H7 and H7A are quite applicable for artificial reproduction of channel catfish, but the technique of application must be improved by adjusting the conditions of pre-spawning maintenance of producers and the injection scheme.

Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) are one of the most important commercial freshwater fish in the world. China has been the major producer and consumer of channel catfish following the rapid development in the past three decades. In the present study, a novel orthologous myostatin gene, IpMSTNa, of channel catfish was identified based on homology cloning and genome locating. Multiple sequence alignments and gene structure analyses showed that the IpMSTNa gene and its deduced protein presented similar architectures to other known vertebrates. Phylogenetic and synteny analyses indicated that IpMSTNa belongs to MSTN1 orthologues. Pro-IpMSTNa protein is a typical disulphide-linked homodimer, with each chain containing an N-terminal pro-domain and a C-terminal unmatured GF domain, while pro-IpMSTNa present some significant differences in secondary structure and three-dimensional substances with pro-IpMSTNb. Relative expression level of the IpMSTNa gene upregulated rapidly and decreased dramatically during the embryonic and larval developmental stages, respectively. In addition, IpMSTNa displayed remarkably higher expression at most developmental stages compared to IpMSTNb. Tissue distribution analysis indicated that the IpMSTNa gene had a significantly higher level of expression than IpMSTNb in all selected tissues, with abundantly greater expression in the liver, muscle, gill and spleen, and moderately greater expression in the kidney, intestine, and head kidney. ISH analysis demonstrated that the expression signals of IpMSTNa and IpMSTNb at the selected developmental stages are consistent to qRT-PCR tests. Our study suggested that the IpMSTNa gene may have more biological functions, which have yet to be determined compared to the IpMSTNb gene.

Proliferative gill disease (PGD) caused by the myxozoan Henneguya ictaluri is one of the most damaging diseases affecting U.S. catfish aquaculture. In channel and hybrid catfish, continuous exposure to the actinospore stage of the parasite elicits a destructive branchitis, impairing osmoregulatory and respiratory function. Mortality can reach 100% in severe outbreaks. Despite similarities during acute stages of infection, research indicates arrested development in hybrid catfish, evinced by reduced H. ictaluri sporogenesis and comparably less parasite DNA in hybrid tissues across the developmental timeline. To assess these findings at the pond level, 18, 0.4‐ha ponds were stocked (3,000 fish/pond) with channel (n = 9) or hybrid (n = 9) catfish fingerlings and maintained as monoculture systems for three production cycles, with clean harvests and restocking as warranted. Water was collected monthly for quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) estimations of H. ictaluri DNA, and sentinel fish were utilized to estimate PGD severity. By the second year, H. ictaluri DNA in hybrid systems was significantly reduced, and PGD lesions in sentinel fish were negligible. Assessment of parasite loads in fish harvested at the termination of the study revealed H. ictaluri DNA in channel catfish to be an order of magnitude higher than hybrid catfish. These results support previous work suggesting that the production of hybrid catfish may reduce PGD incidence in U.S. catfish aquaculture.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo efficacy of propolis against Ligictaluridus floridanus on Ictalurus punctatus gills. This study used an ethanol extract of propolis at a concentration of 300 mg mL−1, with a total polyphenol concentration of 2.77 mg mL−1 as determined by chromatography. In vitro trial used propolis concentrations at 5, 30 as well as 60 mg L–1 and a 70% ethanol control group to treat naturally infected catfish. Mucins are large glycoproteins that cover epithelial surfaces of the body and play important roles in prevention of inflammatory and various infectious diseases. In this study, five membrane‐bound and seven secreted mucin genes in the channel catfish were identified. All these identified mucin genes possess at least one PTS, von Willebrand D (VWD) or SEA domains. The expression of the 12 mucin genes in channel catfish was first studied with infection of Edwardsiella ictaluri and Flavobacterium columnare. Expression difference in MUC13a, MUC13, MUC2 and MUC5b was found in the intestine after E. ictaluri infection. Eight mucin gene expressions (except MUC3a, MUC2, MUC4 and MUC5f) were up‐regulated at 4 hr and down‐regulated after 24 hr in the gill with F. columnare infection. Expression level of MUC2 gene was up‐regulated in the intestine with E. ictaluri infection without no significant change in the gill under the F. columnare infection, which indicate that MUC2 is tissue‐specific gene expression and has different immune respond to two bacterial challenge. Taken together, the study showed mucin from the gill by F. columnare challenge induced an obvious response than mucin from the intestine with E. ictaluri infection.

The industrial aquaculture pond system has gradually replaced the use of traditional earthen pond, as it causes less pollution and is more economical. In this study, an industrial ecological purification recirculating aquaculture system consisting of the water source pond, high‐density culture ponds, a deposit pond, and ecological purification ponds for channel catfish cultivation was established. Twelve water samples from different ponds were sequenced, and the bacterial communities were analysed. The abundances of Cyanobacteria and Merismopedia varied in different functional ponds of the system. The water quality was stable after two months of cultivation at 1.89 ± 0.22 mg/L total nitrogen, 1.1 ± 0.08 mg/L NH₄‐N and 0.43 ± 0.1 mg/L total phosphorus. The fish weight increased in a nearly linear manner, reaching 237.63 ± 23.8 per fish at day 120. An analysis of the environmental parameters, water quality and fish weight suggested that the system had an effective water purification process. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that the community was affected at the genus and phylum levels by different environmental parameters. We identified several dominant beneficial bacteria with nutrient removal abilities. Overall, our results demonstrated that the ecological purification recirculating aquaculture system had notable effects on water quality improvement and promoted changes in bacterial populations. These results provide important information on the microbial ecology of pond industrial eco‐aquaculture systems.

The papaya and pineapple are the major agricultural food products in Thailand. Their by-products contain protease enzyme, papain and bromelain, which can breakdown proteins. The objective of this study was to investigate the growth performances of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) fed with feed mixed with pineapples juice (PA) and dried papaya peel (PP) in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). Three experimental feeds controlled at 25% isonitrogenous formulation containing 5 ml/kg feed PA, 5 g/kg feed PP, mixed PP-PA (5 ml/kg) feed pineapple juice mixed with 5 g/kg feed papaya peel (PP-PA) and a commercial control feed were fed to catfish for 90 days. Each treatment had 3 replicates. The channel catfish (5 g/fish) were allocated in 12 (1 x 1 x 1 m) placed in RAS concrete tanks. The water quality in this research was within the recommended nets levels by the Pollution Control Department, Thailand. The results showed that weight gain, length gain, average daily gain, feed conversion efficiency and protein efficiency ratio was highest in catfish fed with PP and which was significantly different (p < 0.05) from control. The survival rate of all treatments was not significantly different (p > 0.05). In conclusion, 5 g of dried papaya peel mixed in the 1 kg of diet could be applied for channel catfish culture to improve growth performances.
