Search

Measuring soil and snow temperature with high vertical and lateral resolution is critical for advancing the predictive understanding of thermal and hydro-biogeochemical processes that govern the behavior of environmental systems. Vertically resolved soil temperature measurements enable the estimation of soil thermal regimes, frozen-/thawed-layer thickness, thermal parameters, and heat and/or water fluxes. Similarly, they can be used to capture the snow depth and the snowpack thermal parameters and fluxes. However, these measurements are challenging to acquire using conventional approaches due to their total cost, their limited vertical resolution, and their large installation footprint. This study presents the development and validation of a novel distributed temperature profiling (DTP) system that addresses these challenges. The system leverages digital temperature sensors to provide unprecedented, finely resolved depth profiles of temperature measurements with flexibility in system geometry and vertical resolution. The integrated miniaturized logger enables automated data acquisition, management, and wireless transfer. A novel calibration approach adapted to the DTP system confirms the factory-assured sensor accuracy of ±0.1 ∘C and enables improving it to ±0.015 ∘C. Numerical experiments indicate that, under normal environmental conditions, an additional error of 0.01 % in amplitude and 70 s time delay in amplitude for a diurnal period can be expected, owing to the DTP housing. We demonstrate the DTP systems capability at two field sites, one focused on understanding how snow dynamics influence mountainous water resources and the other focused on understanding how soil properties influence carbon cycling. Results indicate that the DTP system reliably captures the dynamics in snow depth and soil freezing and thawing depth, enabling advances in understanding the intensity and timing in surface processes and their impact on subsurface thermohydrological regimes. Overall, the DTP system fulfills the needs for data accuracy, minimal power consumption, and low total cost, enabling advances in the multiscale understanding of various cryospheric and hydro-biogeochemical processes.

Improving the quantification of soil thermal and physical properties is key to achieving a better understanding and prediction of soil hydro-biogeochemical processes and their responses to changes in atmospheric forcing. Obtaining such information at numerous locations and/or over time with conventional soil sampling is challenging. The increasing availability of low-cost, vertically resolved temperature sensor arrays offers promise for improving the estimation of soil thermal properties from temperature time series, and the possible indirect estimation of physical properties. Still, the reliability and limitations of such an approach needs to be assessed. In the present study, we develop a parameter estimation approach based on a combination of thermal modeling, sliding time-windows, Bayesian inference, and Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation to estimate thermal diffusivity and its uncertainty over time, at numerous locations and at an unprecedented vertical spatial resolution (i.e., down to 5 to 10 cm vertical resolution) from soil temperature time series. We provide the necessary framework to assess under which environmental conditions (soil temperature gradient, fluctuations, and trend), temperature sensor characteristics (bias and level of noise) and deployment geometries (sensor number and position) soil thermal diffusivity can be reliably inferred. We validate the method with synthetic experiments and field studies. The synthetic experiments show that in the presence of median diurnal fluctuations ≥ 1.5 °C at 5 cm below the ground surface, temperature gradients > 2 °C m−1, and a sliding time-window of at least 4 days, the proposed method provides reliable depth-resolved thermal diffusivity estimates with percentage errors ≤ 10 % and posterior relative standard deviations ≤ 5 % up to 1 m depth. Reliable thermal diffusivity under such environmental conditions also requires temperature sensors spaced precisely (with few-millimeter accuracy), with a level of noise ≤ 0.02 °C, and with a bias defined by a standard deviation ≤ 0.01 °C. Finally, the application of the developed approach to field data indicates significant repeatability in results and similarity with independent measurements, as well as promise in using a sliding time-window to estimate temporal changes in soil thermal diffusivity, as needed to potentially capture changes in carbon or water content.

The long-term integrity of the bentonite buffer is of significant interest in the performance assessment (PA) of geological nuclear waste disposal. This study aims at understanding how the initial bentonite chemical composition and other geochemical parameters affect long-term chemical properties within the buffer, which will subsequently affect the transport. Using coupled thermal–hydrological–chemical (THC) models for migration of U(VI) in a generic repository, we performed a global sensitivity analysis (GSA) to identify the influence of each parameter on the temporal evolution of a spatially averaged distribution coefficient for the entire buffer. Such an analysis can be used in a repository-scale PA. In this work, we used the toughreact software to model coupled THC processes in a generic clay repository with bentonite buffer. In this model, U(VI) is released from a canister via schoepite dissolution, which is assumed to occur 1000 yr after closure. U(VI) migrates through the bentonite buffer affected by two-site protolysis nonelectrostatic surface complexation and cation exchange (2 SPNE SC/CE). GSA results showed that adsorption density on smectite, pH, volume fractions of smectite, calcite, and Ca+2 aqueous concentration all play a significant role in U(VI) transport, since roughly 80% of adsorbed U(VI) is absorbed by smectite, and Ca+2 affects the aqueous complexation with U(VI). This work demonstrates the complex process models' potential usefulness that can be transferred to the PA model. It also provides information needed to proceed with the development of a reduced-order model, which has the potential to optimize repository designs, site characterization, and performance confirmation.

Climate change is causing rapid changes of Arctic ecosystems. Yet, data needed to unravel complex subsurface processes are very rare. Using geophysical and in situ sensing, this study closes an observational gap associated with thermohydrological dynamics in discontinuous permafrost systems. It highlights the impact of vegetation and snow thickness distribution on subsurface thermohydrological properties and processes. Large snow accumulation near tall shrubs insulates the ground and allows for rapid and downward heat flow. Thinner snow pack above graminoid results in surficial freezing and prevents water from infiltrating into the subsurface. Analyzing short‐term disturbances, we found that lateral flow could be a driving factor in talik formation. Interannual measurements show that deep permafrost temperatures increased by about 0.2°C over 2 years. The results, which suggest that snow‐vegetation‐subsurface processes are tightly coupled, will be useful for improving predictions of Arctic feedback to climate change, including how subsurface thermohydrology influences CO2 and CH4 fluxes., Geophysical Research Letters, 48 (6), ISSN:0094-8276, ISSN:1944-8007

The South Pole Telescope SPT-3G camera utilizes Ti/Au transition edge sensors (TESs). A key requirement for these sensors is reproducibility and long-term stability of the superconducting (SC) transitions. Here, we discuss the impact of electrical contacts design and materials on the shape of the SC transitions. Using scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscope, and optical differential interference contrast microscopy, we observed the presence of unexpected defects of morphological nature on the titanium surface and their evolution in time in proximity to Nb contacts. We found direct correlation between the variations of the morphology and the SC transition shape. Experiments with different diffusion barriers between TES and Nb leads were performed to clarify the origin of this problem. We have demonstrated that the reproducibility of superconducting transitions can be significantly improved by preventing diffusion processes in the TES–leads contact areas.

In this work, we have measured the properties of membrane-suspended bolometer thermal links and microstrip transmission lines in the transition-edge sensor arrays for the third-generation camera for South Pole Telescope (SPT-3G). A promising technique for controlling the end point of the release etch that defines the thermal link has been developed. We have also evaluated the microstrip loss in our detectors by measuring the optical efficiency of detectors with different lengths of microstrip line. The loss tangent is sufficiently low for the use in multi-chronic pixels for cosmic microwave background instruments like SPT-3G.

The third-generation upgrade to the receiver on the South Pole Telescope, SPT-3G, was installed at the South Pole during the 2016–2017 austral summer to measure the polarization of the cosmic microwave background. Increasing the number of detectors by a factor of 10 to ∼16,000 \ud ∼16,000\ud required the multiplexing factor to increase to 68 and the bandwidth of the frequency-division readout electronics to span 1.6–5.2 MHz. This increase necessitates low-thermal conductance, low-inductance cryogenic wiring. Our cold readout system consists of planar thin-film aluminum inductive–capacitive resonators, wired in series with the detectors, summed together, and connected to 4K SQUIDs by 10−μm \ud 10−μm\ud -thick niobium–titanium (NbTi) broadside-coupled striplines. Here, we present an overview of the cold readout electronics for SPT-3G, including assembly details and characterization of electrical and thermal properties of the system. We report, for the NbTi striplines, values of R≤10 −4 Ω \ud R≤10−4Ω\ud , L=21±1 nH \ud L=21±1 nH\ud , and C=1.47±.02 nF \ud C=1.47±.02 nF\ud . Additionally, the striplines’ thermal conductivity is described by kA=6.0±0.3 T 0.92±0.04 μW mm K −1 \ud kA=6.0±0.3 T0.92±0.04 μW mm K−1\ud . Finally, we provide projections for cross talk induced by parasitic impedances from the stripline and find that the median value of percentage cross talk from leakage current is 0.22 and 0.09% \ud 0.09%\ud from wiring impedance.

The South Pole Telescope third-generation (SPT-3G) receiver was installed during the austral summer of 2016–2017. It is designed to measure the cosmic microwave background across three frequency bands centered at 95, 150, and 220 GHz. The SPT-3G receiver has ten focal plane modules, each with 269 pixels. Each pixel features a broadband sinuous antenna coupled to a niobium microstrip transmission line. In-line filters define the desired band-passes before the signal is coupled to six bolometers with Ti/Au/Ti/Au transition edge sensors (three bands × \ud ×\ud two polarizations). In total, the SPT-3G receiver is composed of 16,000 detectors, which are read out using a 68× \ud ×\ud frequency-domain multiplexing scheme. In this paper, we present the process employed in fabricating the detector arrays.

Although infections caused by megalocytiviruses have been reported from a wide range of finfish species for several decades, molecular characterisation of the viruses involved has been undertaken only on more recent cases. Sequence analysis of the major capsid protein and adenosine triphosphatase genes is reported here from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded material from 2 archival ornamental fish cases from 1986 and 1988 in conjunction with data for a range of genes from fresh frozen tissues from 5 cases obtained from 1991 through to 2010. Turbot reddish body iridovirus (TRBIV) genotype megalocytiviruses, previously not documented in ornamental fish, were detected in samples from 1986, 1988 and 1991. In contrast, megalocytiviruses from 1996 onwards, including those characterised from 2002, 2006 and 2010 in this study, were almost indistinguishable from infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV). Three of the species infected with TRBIV-like megalocytiviruses from 1986 to 1991, viz. dwarf gourami Trichogaster lalius (formerly Colisa lalia), freshwater angelfish Pterophyllum scalare and oscar Astronotus ocellatus, were infected with ISKNV genotype megalocytiviruses from 2002 to 2010. The detection of a TRBIV genotype isolate in ornamental fish from 1986 represents the index case, confirmed by molecular sequence data, for the genus Megalocytivirus.

During the austral summer of 2016-17, the third-generation camera, SPT-3G, was installed on the South Pole Telescope, increasing the detector count in the focal plane by an order of magnitude relative to the previous generation. Designed to map the polarization of the cosmic microwave background, SPT-3G contains ten 6-in-hexagonal modules of detectors, each with 269 trichroic and dual-polarization pixels, read out using 68x frequency-domain multiplexing. We have developed superconducting Ti transition-edge sensors with Au protection layers on the top and bottom for the South Pole Telescope’s third-generation receiver (a cosmic microwave background polarimeter, due to be upgraded this austral summer of 2017/2018). The base Au layer (deposited on a thin Ti glue layer) isolates the Ti from any substrate effects; the top Au layer protects the Ti from oxidation during processing and subsequent use of the sensors. We control the transition temperature and normal resistance of the sensors by varying the sensor width and the relative thicknesses of the Ti and Au layers. The transition temperature is roughly six times more sensitive to the thickness of the base Au layer than to that of the top Au layer. The normal resistance is inversely proportional to sensor width for any given film configuration. For widths greater than five micrometers, the critical temperature is independent of width.

A new receiver for the South Pole Telescope, SPT-3G, was deployed in early 2017 to map the cosmic microwave background at 95, 150, and 220 GHz with ∼ \ud ∼\ud 16,000 detectors, 10 times more than its predecessor SPTpol. The increase in detector count is made possible by lenslet-coupled trichroic polarization-sensitive pixels fabricated at Argonne National Laboratory, new 68× \ud ×\ud frequency-domain multiplexing readout electronics, and a higher-throughput optical design. The enhanced sensitivity of SPT-3G will enable a wide range of results including constraints on primordial B-mode polarization, measurements of gravitational lensing of the CMB, and a galaxy cluster survey. Here we present an overview of the instrument and its science objectives, highlighting its measured performance and plans for the upcoming 2018 observing season.

The third-generation South Pole Telescope camera is designed to measure the cosmic microwave background across three frequency bands (centered at 95, 150 and 220 GHz) with ∼ \ud ∼\ud 16,000 transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers. Each multichroic array element on a detector wafer has a broadband sinuous antenna that couples power to six TESs, one for each of the three observing bands and both polarizations, via lumped element filters. Ten detector wafers populate the detector array, which is coupled to the sky via a large-aperture optical system. Here we present the frequency band characterization with Fourier transform spectroscopy, measurements of optical time constants, beam properties, and optical and polarization efficiencies of the detector array. The detectors have frequency bands consistent with our simulations and have high average optical efficiency which is 86, 77 and 66% for the 95, 150 and 220 GHz detectors. The time constants of the detectors are mostly between 0.5 and 5 ms. The beam is round with the correct size, and the polarization efficiency is more than 90% for most of the bolometers.

The readout of transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers with a large multiplexing factor is key for the next generation cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment, Polarbear-2 (Suzuki in J Low Temp Phys 176:719, 2014), having 7588 TES bolometers. To enable the large arrays, we have been developing a readout system with a multiplexing factor of 40 in the frequency domain. Extending that architecture to 40 bolometers requires an increase in the bandwidth of the SQUID electronics, above 4 MHz. This paper focuses on cryogenic readout and shows how it affects cross talk and the responsivity of the TES bolometers. A series resistance, such as equivalent series resistance of capacitors for LC filters, leads to non-linear response of the bolometers. A wiring inductance modulates a voltage across the bolometers and causes cross talk. They should be controlled well to reduce systematic errors in CMB observations. We have been developing a cryogenic readout with a low series impedance and have tuned bolometers in the middle of their transition at a high frequency ( $$>$$ 3 MHz).

© 2002-2011 IEEE. In this paper, we describe the optimization of transition-edge-sensor (TES) detector arrays for the third-generation camera for the South Pole Telescope. The camera, which contains ~ 16 000 detectors, will make high-angular-resolution maps of the temperature and polarization of the cosmic microwave background. Our key results are scatter in the transition temperature of Ti/Au TESs is reduced by fabricating the TESs on a thin Ti(5 nm)/Au(5 nm) buffer layer and the thermal conductivity of the legs that support our detector islands is dominated by the SiOx dielectric in the microstrip transmission lines that run along the legs.

POLARBEAR-2 (PB-2) is a cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiment that will be located in the Atacama highland in Chile at an altitude of 5200 m. Its science goals are to measure the CMB polarization signals originating from both primordial gravitational waves and weak lensing. PB-2 is designed to measure the tensor to scalar ratio, r, with precision {\sigma}(r) < 0.01, and the sum of neutrino masses, {\Sigma}m{\nu}, with {\sigma}({\Sigma}m{\nu}) < 90 meV. To achieve these goals, PB-2 will employ 7588 transition-edge sensor bolometers at 95 GHz and 150 GHz, which will be operated at the base temperature of 250 mK. The third generation receiver for the South Pole Telescope, SPT-3G, will make extremely deep, arcminuteresolution maps of the temperature and polarization of the cosmic microwave background. The SPT-3G maps will enable studies of the B-mode polarization signature, constraining primordial gravitational waves as well as the effect of massive neutrinos on structure formation in the late universe. The SPT-3G receiver will achieve exceptional sensitivity through a focal plane of ~16,000 transition-edge sensor bolometers, an order of magnitude more than the current SPTpol receiver. SPT-3G uses a frequency domain multiplexing (fMux) scheme to read out the focal plane, combining the signals from 64 bolometers onto a single pair of wires. The fMux readout facilitates the large number of detectors in the SPT-3G focal plane by limiting the thermal load due to readout wiring on the 250 millikelvin cryogenic stage. A second advantage of the fMux system is that the operation of each bolometer can be optimized. In addition to these benefits, the fMux readout introduces new challenges into the design and operation of the receiver. The bolometers are operated at a range of frequencies up to 5 MHz, requiring control of stray reactances over a large bandwidth. Additionally, crosstalk between multiplexed detectors will inject large false signals into the data if not adequately mitigated. SPT-3G is scheduled to deploy to the South Pole Telescope in late 2016. Here, we present the pre-deployment performance of the fMux readout system with the SPT-3G focal plane.

Detectors for cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments are now essentially background limited, so a straightforward alternative to improve sensitivity is to increase the number of detectors. Large arrays of multichroic pixels constitute an economical approach to increasing the number of detectors within a given focal plane area. Here, we present the fabrication of large arrays of dual-polarized multichroic transition-edge-sensor (TES) bolometers for the South Pole Telescope third-generation CMB receiver (SPT-3G). The complete SPT-3G receiver will have 2690 pixels, each with six detectors, allowing for individual measurement of three spectral bands (centered at 95 GHz, 150 GHz and 220 GHz) in two orthogonal polarizations. In total, the SPT-3G focal plane will have 16140 detectors. Each pixel is comprised of a broad-band sinuous antenna coupled to a niobium microstrip transmission line. In-line filters are used to define the different band-passes before the millimeter-wavelength signal is fed to the respective Ti/Au TES sensors. Detectors are read out using a 64x frequency domain multiplexing (fMux) scheme. The microfabrication of the SPT-3G detector arrays involves a total of 18 processes, including 13 lithography steps. Together with the fabrication process, the effect of processing on the Ti/Au TES’s Tc is discussed. In addition, detectors fabricated with Ti/Au TES films with Tc between 400 mK 560 mK are presented and their thermal characteristics are evaluated. Optical characterization of the arrays is presented as well, indicating that the response of the detectors is in good agreement with the design values for all three spectral bands (95 GHz, 150 GHz, and 220 GHz). The measured optical efficiency of the detectors is between 0.3 and 0.8. Results discussed here are extracted from a batch of research of development wafers used to develop the baseline process for the fabrication of the arrays of detectors to be deployed with the SPT-3G receiver. Results from these research and development wafers have been incorporated into the fabrication process to get the baseline fabrication process presented here. SPT-3G is scheduled to deploy to the South Pole Telescope in late 2016.

International audience; The Simons Array is a next generation cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiment whose science target is a precision measurement of the B-mode polarization pattern produced both by inflation and by gravitational lensing. As a continuation and extension of the successful POLARBEAR experimental program, the Simons Array will consist of three cryogenic receivers each featuring multichroic bolometer arrays mounted onto separate 3.5m telescopes. The first of these, also called POLARBEAR-2A, will be the first to deploy in late 2016 and has a large diameter focal plane consisting of dual-polarization dichroic pixels sensitive at 95 GHz and 150 GHz. The POLARBEAR-2A focal plane will utilize 7,588 antenna-coupled superconducting transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers read out with SQUID amplifiers using frequency domain multiplexing techniques. The next two receivers that will make up the Simons Array will be nearly identical in overall design but will feature extended frequency capability. The combination of high sensitivity, multichroic frequency coverage and large sky area available from our mid-latitude Chilean observatory will allow Simons Array to produce high quality polarization sky maps over a wide range of angular scales and to separate out the CMB B-modes from other astrophysical sources with high fidelity. After accounting for galactic foreground separation, the Simons Array will detect the primordial gravitational wave B-mode signal to r > 0.01 with a significance of > 5σ and will constrain the sum of neutrino masses to 40 meV (1σ) when cross-correlated with galaxy surveys. We present an overview of the design and status of the \Pb-2 and the Simons Array experiments. \Pb-2 is a Cosmic Microwave Background polarimetry experiment which aims to characterize the arc-minute angular scale B-mode signal from weak gravitational lensing and search for the degree angular scale B-mode signal from inflationary gravitational waves. The receiver has a 365~mm diameter focal plane cooled to 270~milli-Kelvin. The focal plane is filled with 7,588 dichroic lenslet-antenna coupled polarization sensitive Transition Edge Sensor (TES) bolometric pixels that are sensitive to 95~GHz and 150~GHz bands simultaneously. The TES bolometers are read-out by SQUIDs with 40 channel frequency domain multiplexing. Refractive optical elements are made with high purity alumina to achieve high optical throughput. The receiver is designed to achieve noise equivalent temperature of 5.8~$\mu$K$_{CMB}\sqrt{s}$ in each frequency band. \Pb-2 will deploy in 2016 in the Atacama desert in Chile. The Simons Array is a project to further increase sensitivity by deploying three \Pb-2 type receivers. The Simons Array will cover 95~GHz, 150~GHz and 220~GHz frequency bands for foreground control. For the next generation of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments, kilopixel arrays of Transition Edge Sensor (TES) bolometers are necessary to achieve the required sensitivity and their science goals. We are developing read-out electronics for POLARBEAR-2 CMB experiment, which multiplexes 32-TES bolometers through a single superconducting quantum interface device (SQUID). To increase both the bandwidth of the SQUID electronics and the multiplexing factor, we are modifying cold wiring and developing LC filters, and a low-inductance superconducting cable. Using these components, we will show frequency domain multiplexing up to 3 MHz.

International audience; The Simons Array is an expansion of the POLARBEAR cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiment currently observing from the Atacama Desert in Northern Chile. This expansion will create an array of three 3.5m telescopes each coupled to a multichroic bolometric receiver. The Simons Array will have the sensitivity to produce a ≥ 5σ detection of inationary gravitational waves with a tensor-to-scalar ratio r ≥ 0:01, detect the known minimum 58 meV sum of the neutrino masses with 3σ confidence when combined with a next-generation baryon acoustic oscillation measurement, and make a lensing map of large-scale structure over the 80% of the sky available from its Chilean site. These goals require high sensitivity and the ability to extract the CMB signal from contaminating astrophysical foregrounds; these requirements are met by coupling the three high-throughput telescopes to novel multichroic lenslet-coupled pixels each measuring CMB photons in both linear polarization states over multiple spectral bands. We present the status of this instrument already under construction, and an analysis of its capabilities.

A classical vocal exercise called "messa di voce" (Italian for "placing the voice") was used to study the symmetry of intensity increase and decrease in six trained singers. Ideally, the exercise is performed as a symmetric triangle, a linear increase in loudness, followed by a linear decrease. Given that some physiologic variables, like lung volume, undergo unidirectional change rather than a symmetric reversal, there is reason to believe that symmetries may not exist. It was found that highly trained singers who use large SPL ranges tend to abbreviate the decrescendo phase in comparison with the crescendo phase. In a few other cases, a plateau in SPL is reached, but an increase in loudness may still be perceived on the basis of a stronger vibrato or changes in timbre.

The separation of air for nitrogen production can be carried out by pressure-swing adsorption over a carbon molecular sieve. The separation is kinetically based, since the equilibrium adsorption of both oxygen and nitrogen is very similar, but the oxygen is adsorbed faster. Several theoretical and experimental studies have been reported, but mainly dealing with nitrogen purities below 99.9%. The objective of this article is to study experimentally the effect of different process variables on the performance of a rate-induced PSA process in the high-purity region. The effect of cycle time on both the yield and the specific product per unit cycle become more significant as the purity increases. On the other hand, the specific feed per unit cycle is almost insensitive to product purity, particularly as the cycle time increases. These results agree very well with predictions from a theoretical model.

Production of a nitrogen-rich product gas from pressure swing adsorption (PSA) using air feed with carbon molecular sieve (CMS) adsorbents is performed on a commercial basis in a typical two-bed PSA system. The performance of a process (as measured by product rate and nitrogen yield) is found to change with the different methods of repressurizing the beds after regeneration. The performance increases when the adsorbent beds are repressurized to production pressure by feed gas alone fed at an initially slow rate followed by a period with a rapid-feed second stage. An increase of performance is also noticed when repressurization is done backfilling with product gas to an intermediate pressure and then adding feed gas as described above

We report six sibs with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita and a Pena-Shokeir phenotype, born to a healthy woman who was discovered to have asymptomatic myasthenia gravis (MG). This is the first report of anti-acetylcholine receptor (AChR) antibodies causing fetal akinesia/hypokinesia sequence in the offspring of an asymptomatic mother.

The separation of air for the production of nitrogen by pressure swing adsorption over a carbon molecular sieve is kinetically based. The basic steps involved in a cycle are typically pressurization, high pressure adsorption, equalization, countercurrent blowdown and purge. The effect of the pressurization rate on the performance of the nitrogen pressure swing adsorption unit was studied at different cycle times and purities by carrying out simulations with DAPS — Dynamic Adsorption Process Simulator. As the rate of pressurization increases, the performance goes through a maximum. A comparison between the predictions of the theoretical model and experimental results was carried out.

Professional singers shape the acoustical attributes of their vocal production to create the perceptual impression of a single instrument spanning a variety of vowel timbres over a wide range of pitch. Samples of the five Italian vowels over a two‐octave range were analyzed using the modal distribution to yield a time‐frequency image of the signal. From such images (high‐order) representations of the composite transfer function of the signal were extracted. These representations provide little evidence for the existence of an acoustic ‘‘signature’’ that is invariant over the singer’s entire range of production. Rather, the data, along with results from a perceptual study, suggest that singers create the impression of a single instrument by smoothly transitioning from one local region of invariance to the next. By identifying these regions, low‐order, perceptually robust approximations are constructed which bear the identity of the singer when used to synthesize new instances of sung vowels. These low‐order representations also serve as endpoints for interpolating between two different singers, as well as boundary points for extrapolating a singer from chest to head modes of production. Summary Sixty patients with less than six weeks amenorrhoea were examined by ultrasonic “B” scanning for the detection of pregnancy. The results were compared with those obtained by histological examination of the aspirate after the patient had undergone menstrual regulation by vacuum aspiration of the uterine contents. The overall accuracy was 79 per cent with 15 per cent false positives. The accuracy after 39 days amenorrhoea was 95 per cent. The technique was compared with an immunological pregnancy test.

Ethyl pyrene (EP), which forms EP excimer and EP-dimethylaniline (DMA) exciplex in lipid vesicles prepared with 1,2-dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) and its deuterated analogue (DMPC(D)), has been used to monitor the structural properties of membrane lipid. The excimer or exciplex formation is evaluated by examining the logarithm of excimer or exciplex to monomer fluorescence quantum yield ratio as a function of temperature. The EP excimer is influenced by the gel to liquid-crystalline phase transition in both DMPC and DMPC(D). Deuterium isotope substitution in lipid enhances the excimer yield. The EPDMA exciplex is also dependent on membrane lipids, and is sensitive to the lipid phase transition in DMPC, but not in DMPC(D). These findings reveal that in the liquid-cyrstalline phase the two hydrocarbon tails in the two lipid dispersions are structurally comparable, while in the gel phase the tails in DMPC(D) have a significantly less ordered configuration than those in DMPC, making DMPC(D) less rigid in its structure. The present results not only support our previous suggestion, but also indicate that the looser structure and reduced stability in deuterated molecules may be associated with a less structural ordering in them.

Recent advances in ultrasonic technology have permitted differentiation of tissue within an organ. Fifty-nine patients in whom satisfactory follow-up could be obtained under-went grey-scale ultrasonic examination of their livers. Fifty-three patients were scanned successfully and of these a correct diagnosis as to whether metastases were present or not was given in 46. Ultrasound is a safe non-invasive way of detecting hepatic metastases.

A few years ago, a field trial was carried out in which a large number of plasma samples (100 normals, 806 anticoagulated patients, as well as patients with deficiencies of the factors II, V, VII and X) were tested with a newly developed rabbit brain thromboplastin (Thromboplastin FS) and with Human Brain Thromboplastin prepared by Prof. Duckert in Basel (1). Both reagents behaved similarly over the whole range of measurement (fig. 1). The “calibration constant” (according to the concept of Biggs and Denson) of Thromboplastin FS relative to Human Brain Thromboplastin Basel was determined with 0.986.
