12. An 'Adventure' of MBA Students in Europe: How Volcanic Ash Produced an Incidental Learning Experience

Abstract

Because the volcanic ash that affected air travel in Western Europe in 2010 was considered as one of the most meaningful learning experiences by a group of MBA students, this article aims to outline the main aspects of an incidental learning situation, rarely described on management education literature. Incidental learning is an unsystematic apprentice's experience leaded by tacit knowledge. Our central objective was to describe ways of learning that developed from this situation, herein referred to as the "adventure in Europe", and also deepens the understanding of the role of incidental learning in formal education. This qualitative-exploratory study included ten senior managers from a Brazilian International Executive MBA program. Data were collected by a focal group, an objective questionnaire and two rounds of interviews. The results show the combination of reflection, reflexivity and cooperation in dealing with an incidental and loosely structured situation regarding two aspects used by students to produce significant knowledge: engagement in action and decision-making process. We discuss the relevance of educational strategies that provide opportunities so that incidental experiences can be explored creatively in management education to produce significant and experiential learning for the apprentices.

13. Adaptation and Validation of the Brazilian Version of the Hope Index

Abstract

The objective of this study was to adapt and gather validity evidence for a Brazilian sample version of the Hope Index and to verify if cultural differences would produce different results than those found in the United States. In this study, we present a set of analyses that together comprise a comprehensive validity argument for the use of a test in a new language or culture. Participants were 844 undergraduate Brazilian students (mean age 21.3 years). A content validity study suggested that new items could be added to the scale. Factor analyses extracted two factors replicating the original instrument structure. The internal consistency was adequate with and without the added items. The results illustrate how different validation procedures can be used to support the use of an adapted version of a test, suggesting that in Brazil, researchers may choose the original adapted version (16 items) or the more "emic" version (21 items) depending on the objectives of their study. The indication that the Hope Index is valid in a Brazilian sample strengthens the idea that this construct may be universal. The results also stress the importance of conducting content validity studies as part of a cross-cultural adaptation of a test. (Contains 1 table and 1 note.)

Abstract

This article describes counseling in Brazil, which is rooted in career and vocational guidance. Although considered a distinct discipline, counseling falls under the umbrella of psychology. The multicultural movement is gaining momentum in Brazil, and counselors are pioneers working with socioracial minority college students. This is an emerging dimension to the professional identity. Some Brazilian universities are interested in international partnerships that could lead to the establishment of counseling as an independent profession.

Abstract

The Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT) has been gaining increased attention as a sound and innovative instrument in its conceptualization of burnout. BAT has been adapted for several countries, revealing promising validity evidence. This paper aims to present the psychometric properties of the Brazilian and Portuguese versions of the BAT in both the 23-item and 12-item versions. BAT’s validity evidence based on the internal structure (dimensionality, reliability, and measurement invariance) and validity evidence based on the relations to other variables are the focus of research. A cross-sectional study was conducted with two non-probabilistic convenience samples from two countries (N = 3103) one from Brazil (nBrazil = 2217) and one from Portugal (nPortugal = 886). BAT’s original structure was confirmed, and it achieved measurement invariance across countries. Using both classic test theory and item response theory as frameworks, the BAT presented good validity evidence based on the internal structure. Furthermore, the BAT showed good convergent evidence (i.e., work engagement, co-worker support, role clarity, work overload, and negative change). In conclusion, the psychometric properties of the BAT make this freely available instrument a promising way to measure and compare burnout levels of Portuguese and Brazilian workers.

Abstract

Workaholism is characterized by a state of mind in which professionals work excessively and compulsively. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of two versions of the Dutch Work Addiction Scale (DUWAS-16 and DUWAS-10) for the Brazilian context. A total of 571 workers, 65.5% female, with a mean age of 36.4 years (SD = 10.8) participated in the study. The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of DUWAS-16 showed that the scale can be used by adopting a structure of two oblique factors (Working Excessively and Working Compulsively), or a one-dimensional structure (Addiction). The CFA of the DUWAS-10 reduced version suggests that either the one-dimensional structure (Addiction) or two oblique factors (Working Excessively and Working Compulsively) are adequate. The results indicated that DUWAS-10 can be considered superior to DUWAS-16 to evaluate the dimensions of workaholism in the Brazilian context.

Abstract

Engajamento no trabalho é um estado mental disposicional positivo de intenso prazer e conexão profunda com a atividade laboral. Este estudo apresenta normas para interpretação da versão brasileira da Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES). Participaram 1167 trabalhadores, com idade média de 36,8 anos (DP=10,3), 65% do sexo feminino, das cinco regiões brasileiras. Em um estudo anterior, análises fatoriais mostraram que tanto a solução de um fator como a de três fatores (vigor, dedicação e concentração) são adequadas. A consistência interna do instrumento foi de 0,95 e as correlações entre os fatores foram de 0,81 a 0,82. Verificou-se também diferenças de engajamento entre grupos ocupacionais, sendo que pessoas em cargos cuja autonomia e poder de decisão são maiores apresentamse mais engajadas. Os escores de engajamento mostraram correlação positiva com a idade. Por esse motivo, o conjunto de normas foi elaborado segundo grupos etários e fases do desenvolvimento da carreira. Work engagement is a dispositional and positive mental state of intense pleasure and deep connection with one’s activity. This research aims to present the norms of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), an international instrument used to assess this construct. The participants were 1,167 workers, average age of 36.8 years (SD=10.3), 65% female, from the five Brazilian regions. In a previous study, factor analysis demonstrated that one and three factor solutions were adequate. The internal consistency of the scale was satisfactory (α=.95). The three factors presented strong correlations among themselves (r between .81 and .82). Work engagement scores vary by occupational function, demonstrating that positions that provide more autonomy and decision-making power foster the development of engagement. Engagement scores showed a positive correlation with age, which led to the development of Brazilian norms according to age groups, according to stage of career development. O engagement laboral es un estado mental disposicional positivo de intenso placer y profunda conexión con la actividad laboral. Eso estudio tiene como objetivo la estandarización de la Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), que es un instrumento utilizado internacionalmente para evaluar este constructo. La muestra está formada por 1.167 trabajadores, 65% del sexo femenino, con edad media de 36.8 (DP=10.3), en las cinco regiones de Brasil. El análisis estadístico demostró la consistencia interna de la escala (α=.95). Los tres factores del engagement demostraron altas correlaciones (r entre .81 e .82), pero su estructura uní o tris factorial será discutida. Lo escore de engagement y funciones ocupacionales demuestro que las posiciones con mayor autonomía y toma de decisiones favorecen el desarrollo del engagement laboral. Teniendo en vista la relación positiva y creciente entre engagement y edad, las normas brasileñas fueran elaboradas por grupos etarios de desarrollo de carrera profesional.

Abstract

The Authentic Leadership Model stands out among positive theories of leadership. The most frequently used instrument to determine the leader’s authenticity is theAuthentic Leadership Questionnaire(ALQ).Brazil lacks studies about the validity of this measure.The aim of this research is to present evidence of validity (ALQ) for the Brazilian work context. Leaders (N = 437) and followers (N = 1329) belonging to organizations in the South of the country participated in this research. The ALQ was applied in its self and hetero-assessment versions. Confirmatory Factor Analysis indicates the presence of the four factors of the Authentic Leadership model, and the ALQ shows reliability and validity for the Brazilian samples studied. The private nature influences the perception of leadership authenticity, but the results do not confirm the influence of socio-demographic variables (age, gender, education and salary) or the organization’s size. The limitations of the study are discussed together with suggestions for future research., O modelo de Liderança Autêntica destaca-se entre as teorias positivas de liderança. O instrumento mais utilizado para aferir a autenticidade do líder é o Authentic Leadership Questionnaire (ALQ). No Brasil, esta medida encontra-se validada, contudo, é ainda necessário reforçar as suas evidências de validade para este país. O objetivo desta investigação é apresentar evidências adicionais de validade do ALQ para o contexto brasileiro de trabalho. Participaram no estudo profissionais líderes (N = 437) e liderados (N = 1329), de organizações da região sul do país. O ALQ foi aplicado nas versões de auto e heteroavaliação. Análises Fatoriais Confirmatórias indicam a presença dos quatro fatores do modelo de Liderança Autêntica, e há confiabilidade e validade do ALQ para as amostras brasileiras estudadas. A natureza privada das organizações impacta na percepção de autenticidade na liderança, contudo os resultados não confirmam a importância das variáveis sociodemográficas (idade, sexo, escolaridade e renda pessoal) e da dimensão da organização. Discutem-se as limitações do estudo e apresentam-se sugestões para futuras investigações.

Este estudo objetivou avaliar as propriedades psicométricas das versões extensa (DUWAS-16) e reduzida (DUWAS-10) da Dutch Work Addiction Scale (DUWAS) para o contexto brasileiro. Participaram da pesquisa 571 trabalhadores (65,5% do sexo feminino) com idade média de 36,4 anos (DP = 10,8). A análise fatorial confirmatória (AFC) da DUWAS-16 evidenciou que a escala pode ser utilizada adotando uma estrutura de dois fatores oblíquos (Trabalhar Excessivamente e Trabalhar Compulsivamente) ou uma estrutura unidimensional (Adição). A AFC da versão reduzida DUWAS-10 sugere que tanto a estrutura unidimensional (Adição) ou de dois fatores oblíquos (Trabalhar Excessivamente e Trabalhar Compulsivamente) são adequadas. Os resultados indicaram que a DUWAS-10 pode ser considerada superior a DUWAS-16 para avaliar as dimensões de workaholism no contexto brasileiro.
