PRESIDENTIAL elections ,DOMESTIC relations ,SPOUSES' legal relationship ,UNITED States elections ,POLITICAL candidates - Abstract
This is an article that discusses how Senator John Kerry selected John Edwards as his running mate in his campaign for United States President in 2004. The little girl's voice on the line was not exactly what she expected--but the message delivered was just what Elizabeth Edwards had desired. As the wife of one of a handful of top contenders to be Democrat John Kerry's vice presidential running mate, Elizabeth was waiting anxiously by her phone in Raleigh, N.C., early on the morning of July 6 for her husband to call. Capping a top-secret, four-month search, Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry announced he had chosen Edwards, 51, a senator from North Carolina--and former rival for the Democratic nomination--to join his quest for the White House. Striking within minutes of the announcement, Republican operatives tagged Edwards as an inexperienced lawmaker who could claim little in the way of success, or even action, during his single term as a senator in Washington. Democrats, for their part, praised Edwards's energy--he helped raise $2 million for the Kerry campaign before he was even tapped--and hope the son of a Carolina mill worker will add regional appeal to the ticket.

HIGH school students ,COLLEGE applications ,UNIVERSITY & college admission ,CREATIVE ability ,SAMOSAS ,SAT (Educational test) - Abstract
These kids offered a little song, a little dance--even some Samosas and lucky socks--to try getting into their dream schools. Hey, it beats retaking the SATs. With the help of a few buddies, the Lake Highlands High School senior extolled his virtues by impersonating Latin hunk Enrique Iglesias in a spoof of the singer's "Hero" video. "A counselor said, 'You have to see what I just got in,'" says admissions dean Ron Moss, who adds that stunts don't usually work in the college game. "It's a long shot," says Moss. "Some schools won't even look at gimmicks." But SMU, which accepted Sellers for the class of '08, judged him to be more than a class clown. An aspiring cardiologist, Priya Devakumar sent admissions officers an artery-clogging batch of fried South Asian dumplings called Samosas with her application to Massachusetts's Tufts University. Was it a recipe for success? Alas, no. But the would-be valedictorian from the Mary Louis Academy is choosing among NYU, Boston University and Cornell, three of the 10 schools that have already accepted her--none of which got a cooking sample.

- Abstract
This article discusses the spinoff of the television program "Friends" called "Joey" starring former "Friends" actor, Matt LeBlanc. NBC's Friends spinoff Joey may well end up being the most scrutinized new show this fall. And the early word is…good. The network was confident enough in the series, which stars Matt LeBlanc and Drea de Matteo, that it screened the entire pilot for media insiders in New York City on May 17. The show received a round of applause and high marks for its acting. De Matteo, whacked from her role as "The Sopranos'" Adriana La Cerva on the May 23 episode, already feels at ease with her new cast.

CHILDBIRTH - Abstract
This article discusses the birth of Helen Hunt's daughter, Makena Lei Gordon Carnahan. No need to ask: Helen Hunt is mad about her little girl, Makena Lei Gordon Carnahan, born at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A. on May 13. Arriving nearly four weeks early, Hunt's first child--named after a town in Hawaii where Hunt liked to vacation and her father, TV director Gordon Hunt--is healthy, if a bit travel weary. Hunt spent the first part of May in Hawaii with her TV producer-writer beau of three years, Matthew Carnahan, 43, and flew back to L.A. to avoid air travel in her last month, as doctors recommend. The star of TV's "Mad About You" was three months pregnant when she began shooting "A Good Woman in Italy" last year. Luckily, Carnahan is, says "Woman" producer Steven Siebert, "warm and easygoing."
