This is a review of the 5th edition of Evidence-Based Practice for Nurses: Appraisal and Application of Research edited by Nola A. Schmidt and Janet M. Brown (2022). The reviewed book provides an exploration of evidence-based nursing practice, viewed through the lens of traditional perspectives that position the nursing discipline as applied science and approach to nursing practice from the standpoint of the medical model. In this column, the meaning of evidence-based nursing practice is reconsidered within the context of the theory-guided nursing practice arising from the distinctive perspective of the nursing discipline as a human science. This commentary on one of D. Sinha's articles is organised into three parts. In the first part, the narrowness of the scientific worldview and the limitations of the scientific method and its implication for investigating Indian psychological phenomena have been discussed. The second part discusses the distinct characteristics of the human world and the need for human science to study psychological phenomena. The importance of human science as an antidote to the dark side of scientific modernity has also been highlighted. Extending the discussion of the first two sections, the final (third) section discusses the current status of psychological research in India and suggests measures to improve research practices. We report our research progress on interactive evolutionary computation (IEC). Following description of IEC features, we present our research on IEC user modeling, acceleration of IEC search, several IEC frameworks, evolutionary multi-objective optimization with IEC, and IEC for human science. IEC research is categorized into three fields in general; major part of IEC papers is IEC application-oriented research; almost all the others are research that aims to reduce IEC user fatigue; and very little work researches the use of IEC for human science. In particular, IEC is a data analysis and processing method and tool for the discovery of human psychological and physiological knowledge. We include several of our IEC application-oriented research projects in this paper, and focus on two other research directions, i.e., IEC algorithm research to reduce user fatigue, and IEC for human science research. This article argues that, in order to understand Peter Winch's view of philosophy, it is profitable to read him together with R. G. Collingwood's philosophy of history. Collingwood was both an important source for Winch and a thinker engaged in a closely parallel philosophical pursuit. Collingwood and Winch shared the view that philosophy is an effort to understand the various ways in which human beings make reality intelligible. For both, this called for rapprochement between philosophy and the humanities. Like Collingwood, Winch wanted to reformulate philosophy as a form of human science. Both thinkers advanced a conception of logic where the validity of judgements, propositions, and thought are dependent on their function as instruments in human dialogue. In their treatments of logic, Winch and Collingwood were fleshing out their idea that questions concerning human meaningful behaviour also tie back to the question of what philosophical analysis is about. There is a deep connection between two main issues in both Collingwood's and Winch's writings: on the one hand, the need for 'internal' understanding of how human beings relate to reality, and on the other hand, their critique of the idea of logic as a self-sufficient system, external to historically embedded forms of life. On 1 and 2 June, NTT Communication Science Laboratories (CS Labs) hosted the Open House on-site for the first time in four years. We presented 6 talks and 16 exhibits of our latest research efforts in information and human sciences at the event, attracting more than 400 visitors over the two days. It also explores future objectives for this field, seeking to understand how developing faith as a science can contribute to the comprehensive development of individuals and societies. Using a comprehensive and analytical methodology, the research aims to shed light on the importance of grounding faith as a human science and how these studies can contribute to the advancement of humanity and its development in the contemporary world. The traditional teaching quality evaluation system lacks the introduction of experiential education. The perspective of positive psychology is a part of experiential education. The evaluation system based on positive psychology is established, and the evaluation matrix is established to evaluate the teaching quality of sports human science by quantifying the data. Such a massive study of "facilitation" is carried out in discussing issues of community development and empowerment. This article aims to look at the development of articles on facilitation studies in development and empowerment issues. This study was reviewed using a bibliometric approach in which metadata was fully sourced from the Dimension.ai website accessed on January 2, 2023. Metadata related to facilitation studies were searched using the keyword "facilitation" as search input using two filter classifications, namely (a) Document Type "article " (b) Subject Area "human science" which found as many as 2,583 article metadata and stored with the file type Comma Separated Values (CSV). Bibliometric data analysis in this study used VOSviewer software version 1.6.18 for three visualizations (a) visualization of keyword trends (b) visualization of keyword novelty, and (c) visualization of countries. This article finds, first; Facilitation studies in the subject area of human science have been carried out since 1929 by Anderson (1929) under the title An Experimental Study of "Social Facilitation" as Affected by "Intelligence". Second; The article on facilitation studies that was most cited was an article belonging to the Rhodes Team entitled The 'risk environment': a framework for understanding and reducing drug-related harm. Third; there are five clusters related to trending keywords namely "Country" "Group" "Effect" "Cere" and Conflict". This article concludes that the study of facilitation in empowerment issues focuses more on empirical aspects, not much to discuss at the philosophical level.

Kant is not generally recognised to be an Aristotelian hylomorphic Philosopher because of his extension of logic into Philosophical Psychology in the form of Transcendental Logic. This extension is a natural articulation of hylomorphic metaphysics. Aristotle’s 4 kinds of change, 3 principles, and 4 “causes” are all transformed into the Kantian system of categories of judgement and also transposed into the faculties of sensibility, understanding, and reason. The principles of noncontradiction and sufficient reason obviously have origins in Aristotelian logic and Metaphysics. Freud claims that he is writing the Psychology that Kant would have written had he written subsequent to the “divorce” between Philosophy and Psychology in 1870 but it is clear that Freud too must be considered a hylomorphic Psychologist. This latter claim must be true if it is the case that Kant can be regarded, a hylomorphic Philosopher. Freud regards Consciousness and psychological residues (rituals) that we find in institutions as vicissitudes of Instinct. Instinct is here of course a philosophical concept possessing an aim, an object, a bodily source and a demand for motor activity. Early vicissitudes of instincts are narcissistically based and give rise the genesis of a strong ego under favourable circumstances. Freudian theory correctly interpreted ought to give rise to ethical theory of the type we find in Kant. This is a requirement for theories that we find in the arena of transcendental psychology.

To identify the main task of clinical psychology, we cannot neglect that it studies the whole existence of the individual (Bosinelli, 1982; Cargnello, 1980; Codispoti, 2000; Minkowski, 2015). Starting from the term existence (from the Latin exsistĕre, whose prefix indicates a meaning related to going out, to coming forth; see Georges Calonghi, 1915), we understand that clinical psychology examines the open and unstable nature (Dazzi et al., 2006; Ehrenberg, 1999; Marzillier Hall, 1999; Nietzsche, 2011) of patients. This means that the space of psychological inquiry, which cannot be limited to the determinations of causal relationships – through which knowledge is typically acquired in the natural sciences – (Cartesio, 1999; Frisone et al., 2020) – requires a broader framework.

The aim of this article is to show that and how philosophy and philosophical thinking can be of relevance for the preparation of future professionals in adaptive physical activity. To this end we utilize philosophical insights from the human science perspective on two central issues, namely experience and intersubjectivity, which are weaved together in an analysis of a reflective journal produced by an adaptive physical activity student. More specifically, by drawing on phenomenological and pragmatist philosophy, we show how the meaning of adaptive physical activity—as adaptive—is created through a complexity of individual and shared meaning making processes between adaptive physical activity educators, students, and the people they meet in their practicum. Through this article, we will show how the human science perspective can provide tools to understand the students, their learning, and their involvement in the educational program. The French discourse model of human communication is largely an engagement of the problematic concept of enlightenment as a product of the ability to reason by thinking. The engagement as speaking and writing becomes thematic, when one considers that, the product called "reason" also should explicate the process wherein the conscious experience of being is essentially "reasonable" in doing as listening and reading. The engaged analysis of reason differentiates among parole, discours, langue, and langage as a synthesis of logic mediating rhetoric and grammar as models of expression and perception. The method is known as the trivium in the Medieval universities of Europe, subsequently adopted as a pedagogy throughout Europe, and last, adopted by C. S. Peirce as a foundational semiotic methodology for science (methodeutic). The influence of the human science adaptations emerges in France with the philosophic cross-over and intertwined (chiasm) positions of Existentialism, Phenomenology, Structuralism, and Semiology. Doing the reasonable requires metaphor and metonymy, simile and synecdoche in the service of expression, yet, it also demands the perception of their respective counterparts in allegory, analogy, allegoresis, and aphorism. The human journey from thinking to speaking to doing and the return (renvoi) is one of ingenuity made eloquent in the face of crisis. This article aims to raise awareness of the growing importance of systematic reviews in the human and social sciences and the various ways in which libraries can support such studies. It describes the development of Systematic Reviews over the last ten years, analyses which roles can be played by subject librarians and information specialists and gives recommendations on the concrete contribution that the professional group of academic librarians can make to such research projects. Although it is argued that social justice is a core concern for the discipline, nursing has not generally played a leadership role in the responses to many of the greatest social problems of our time. These include the accelerated rate of climate change, pandemic threats, systemic racism, growing health and social inequities, and the regulation of new technologies to ensure an equitable future 'for all.' In nursing codes of ethics, administration, education, policies, and practice, social justice is often claimed to be a core value, yet it is rarely contextualized by philosophical or theoretical underpinnings. It appears that nurses' commitment to social justice may stem more from a penchant for 'doing good' than an attempt to explore, understand, and enact what is meant by social justice from an ontological, epistemological, and methodological perspective. We contend that the dominance of a human science perspective in nursing contributes to a narrow definition of health and relegates many issues central to social justice to the margins of nurses' care. In this article, we explore how the focus on 'the human' in the human science perspective may not only be limiting the capacity of nurses to develop strategies to adequately address social injustice, but in some instances, direct nurses to contribute to their very reproduction. We suggest that a critical interrogation of this human‐centric hegemony can identify avenues of rupture and introduce posthumanism as an additional philosophical perspective for consideration to help bridge the human‐social divide. Psychology has a pervasive but shallow engagement with Confucian philosophy, mainly referencing its popular form as a part of Chinese tradition. This special issue takes a more systematic view of Confucianism as comprehensive philosophy. Drawing from New Confucianism, it is argued that the signal contribution of Confucianism to psychology as human (rather than natural) science is an ontology of the moral mind (heaven and humanity in union). This holistic ontology makes the cultivation of benevolence (仁) a lifelong mission for Confucianists. Practices of self-cultivation are exemplified by a case study of Zeng Guofan, a Qing Dynasty official and scholar, who combined academics, calligraphy, meditation, diary writing and self-reflection to refine his character, nurture and educate his family, and be of service to society. Second, Confucianism's traditional lack of interest in epistemology is addressed through the complementary (dialectical) principle of 'one principle, many manifestations', where methods of Western science can be incorporated into the investigation of practices such as brush calligraphy that are shown to have beneficial effects on mental and physical health. Confucianism can also be treated as an object of scientific inquiry: We find that even among highly educated Chinese people, understanding of Confucianism today is mostly fragmented and abstract. Confucian Psychology can be summarised as a psychology of aspirations for bettering the condition of humanity through character development and greater awareness of the situation to realise the endowment of moral mind. Finally, there are deep connections between Confucian and Indian psychology—both involve height psychology, a psychology of aspirations and for spiritual transformation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The theology as enabler of a more human sciencePaul Karl Feyerabend conceives religion as a possible way to infuse meaning and humanity to the science. He asserts that when it has taken place historically a unity between science and religion, science has been able to transcend values of utility and efficiency. This happens because the religion confers meaning to scientific results within an image of the world that involves the person as a whole. In this context, the Viennese invites to establish a dialogue with the science of ancient Greece in order to know more about more human ways of doing science and to be able to judge in perspective the achievements of scientific materialism. Our objective in this work will be to attend to this invitation of Viennese studying the relation that exists between mathematics and theology in the Ptolemaic writings. We believe that the Alexandrian is an emblematic case of this communion between science and theology and –in this sense– allows us to rethink contemporary science as a cognitive task more attentive to the human and existential implications of its theories and models.

This article has the same name as the second volume in a six-volume translation of the major writings of Wilhelm Dilthey, published in Princeton University Press in 1991-1996, for two reasons: 1) to limit our research of key philosophical and psychological writings from the 1890-s, in which Dilthey propagated a descriptive and analytic psychology as a “human science” (Geisteswissenschaft); 2) to emphasize and understand Dilthey’s assertion that the human world was sufficiently different from the natural world that special methods were required for its study; hermeneutics, the deliberate and systematic methodology of interpretation, was the only necessary approach for studying and understanding the human world.

The main goal of the study is to show the novelty of Cabanis’s project. As a scientist, doctor and philosopher, the author of Rapports du physique et du moral de l’homme attempts to find a new science called anthropology, based mostly on physiology. There is also a discussion of how sensations are transformed(“translated”) into signs and ideas. In his dream of progress of human society, Cabanis has to navigate between the organic conception of the human being and vitalism, which can be seen as a critical approach to any scientific reductionism.

Prominent voices in archeology have expressed deep skepticism about the role of theory in archeology, while with new, exciting methods at its disposal, archeological science is occasionally perceived as not needing theory at all. This article reflects upon the debate about theory in archeology to arrive at a robust but critical middle-range concept of the role and character of theory in socio-environmental archeology. It is argued that archeology is a data-based science and, consequently, in order for theory to be meaningful in socio-environmental archeology, theory ought explicitly aim to make its qualitative concepts quantitative to establish a clear relation to data and its interpretation. On the turn side, theory plays an important role critically reflecting upon the use of concepts in archeological understanding and explanation, as well as their origins in particular paradigms, as examples of which certain debates in scientific archeology are discussed (aDNA and migration, evolutionism). We argue that such a model would serve archeology far more than the dismissal of theory on the one hand and the continued production of 'high' theory in absence of operationalization on the other.
