We have studied the dust density, temperature and velocity distributions of the archetypal massive young stellar object (MYSO) AFGL 2591. Given its high luminosity ($L=2 \times 10^5$ L$_\odot$) and distance ($d=3.3$ kpc), AFGL 2591 has one of the highest $\sqrt{L}/d$ ratio, giving better resolved dust emission than any other MYSO. As such, this paper provides a template on how to use resolved multi-wavelength data and radiative transfer to obtain a well-constrained 2-D axi-symmetric analytic rotating infall model. We show for the first time that the resolved dust continuum emission from Herschel 70 $��$m observations is extended along the outflow direction, whose origin is explained in part from warm dust in the outflow cavity walls. However, the model can only explain the kinematic features from CH$_3$CN observations with unrealistically low stellar masses ($, 34 pages, 22 figures, 15 tables, 4 appendices. We present the first release of the data and compact-source catalogue for the JCMT Large Program SCUBA-2 Continuum Observations of Pre-protostellar Evolution (SCOPE). SCOPE consists of 850-um continuum observations of 1235 Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) made with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. These data are at an angular resolution of 14.4 arcsec, significantly improving upon the 353-GHz resolution of Planck at 5 arcmin, and allowing for a catalogue of 3528 compact sources in 558 PGCCs. We find that the detected PGCCs have significant sub-structure, with 61 per cent of detected PGCCs having 3 or more compact sources, with filamentary structure also prevalent within the sample. A detection rate of 45 per cent is found across the survey, which is 95 per cent complete to Planck column densities of $N_{H_{2}}$ $>$ 5 $\times$ 10$^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$. By positionally associating the SCOPE compact sources with YSOs, the star formation efficiency, as measured by the ratio of luminosity to mass, in nearby clouds is found to be similar to that in the more distant Galactic Plane, with the column density distributions also indistinguishable from each other., 16 pages, 13 figures, 1 table. We present the 850 $\mu$m polarization observations toward the IC5146 filamentary cloud taken using the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 (SCUBA-2) and its associated polarimeter (POL-2), mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), as part of the B-fields In STar forming Regions Observations (BISTRO). This work is aimed at revealing the magnetic field morphology within a core-scale ($\lesssim 1.0$ pc) hub-filament structure (HFS) located at the end of a parsec-scale filament. To investigate whether or not the observed polarization traces the magnetic field in the HFS, we analyze the dependence between the observed polarization fraction and total intensity using a Bayesian approach with the polarization fraction described by the Rice likelihood function, which can correctly describe the probability density function (PDF) of the observed polarization fraction for low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) data. We find a power-law dependence between the polarization fraction and total intensity with an index of 0.56 in $A_V\sim$ 20--300 mag regions, suggesting that the dust grains in these dense regions can still be aligned with magnetic fields in the IC5146 regions. Our polarization maps reveal a curved magnetic field, possibly dragged by the contraction along the parsec-scale filament. We further obtain a magnetic field strength of 0.5$\pm$0.2 mG toward the central hub using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, corresponding to a mass-to-flux criticality of $\sim$ $1.3\pm0.4$ and an Alfv\'{e}nic Mach number of $, Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

How stellar feedback from high-mass stars (e.g., H{\sc ii} regions) influences the surrounding interstellar medium and regulates new star formation is still unclear. To address this question, we observed the G9.62+0.19 complex in 850 $\mu$m continuum with the JCMT/POL-2 polarimeter. An ordered magnetic field has been discovered in its youngest clump, the G9.62 clump. The magnetic field strength is determined to be $\sim$1 mG. Magnetic field plays a larger role than turbulence in supporting the clump. However, the G9.62 clump is still unstable against gravitational collapse even if thermal, turbulent, and magnetic field support are taken into account all together. The magnetic field segments in the outskirts of the G9.62 clump seem to point toward the clump center, resembling a dragged-in morphology, indicating that the clump is likely undergoing magnetically-regulated global collapse. However, The magnetic field in its central region is aligned with the shells of the photodissociation regions (PDRs) and is approximately parallel to the ionization (or shock) front, indicating that the magnetic field therein is likely compressed by the expanding H{\sc ii} regions that formed in the same complex., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted to be published on ApJ letter

Magnetic field is one of the key agents that play a crucial role in shaping molecular clouds and regulating star formation, yet the complete information on the magnetic field is not well constrained due to the limitations in observations. We study the magnetic field in the massive infrared dark cloud G035.39-00.33 from dust continuum polarization observations at 850 $\micron$ with SCUBA-2/POL-2 at JCMT. The magnetic field tends to be perpendicular to the densest part of the main filament (F$_{M}$), whereas it has a less defined relative orientation in the rest of the structure, where it tends to be parallel to some diffuse regions. A mean plane-of-the-sky magnetic field strength of $\sim$50 $\mu$G for F$_{M}$ is obtained using Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method. Based on $^{13}$CO (1-0) line observations, we suggest a formation scenario of F$_{M}$ due to large-scale ($\sim$10 pc) cloud-cloud collision. Using additional NH$_3$ line data, we estimate that F$_{M}$ will be gravitationally unstable if it is only supported by thermal pressure and turbulence. The northern part of F$_{M}$, however, can be stabilized by a modest additional support from the local magnetic field. The middle and southern parts of F$_{M}$ are likely unstable even if the magnetic field support is taken into account. We claim that the clumps in F$_{M}$ may be supported by turbulence and magnetic fields against gravitational collapse. Finally, we identified for the first time a massive ($\sim$200 M$_{\sun}$), collapsing starless clump candidate, "c8", in G035.39-00.33. The utilization of livestock manure for biochar production has received much attention mainly due to the greenhouse gases mitigation and crop/fertilizer production. In this work, a novel biomass, horse manure, was performed at the temperature range of 673–1073 K and different residence times from 0 to 60 min by a vertical fixed-bed pyrolyzer. The thermochemical properties of the biochar products, including elemental analysis and calorific value, were investigated. Furthermore, the information about structural characteristics was also obtained by means of true density and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the calorific value of the resulting biochar was on increasing trend with temperature, while its maximal increase occurred at around 773–873 K. This result was in high agreement with its variation in carbon content. By contrast, the contents of hydrogen and oxygen decreased slightly due to the devolatilization because of thermal decomposition reactions like depolymerization and carbonization. On the other hand, the true density of the biochar product increased with temperature, making it significant in the structural shrinkage. The manure-derived biochar revealed an excellent characterization with high content of carbon, low contents of nitrogen and ash, and traces of sulfur and heavy metals, suggesting an available use as solid fuel.

We have modified the iterative procedure introduced by Lin et al. (2016), to systematically combine the submm images taken from ground based (e.g., CSO, JCMT, APEX) and space (e.g., Herschel, Planck) telescopes. We applied the updated procedure to observations of three well studied Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs): G11.11-0.12, G14.225-0.506 and G28.34+0.06, and then performed single-component, modified black-body fits to derive $\sim$10$"$ resolution dust temperature and column density maps. The derived column density maps show that these three IRDCs exhibit complex filamentary structures embedding with rich clumps/cores. We compared the column density probability distribution functions (N-PDFs) and two-point correlation (2PT) functions of the column density field between these IRDCs with several OB cluster-forming regions. Based on the observed correlation and measurements, and complementary hydrodynamical simulations for a 10$^{4}$ $\rm M_{\odot}$ molecular cloud, we hypothesize that cloud evolution can be better characterized by the evolution of the (column) density distribution function and the relative power of dense structures as a function of spatial scales, rather than merely based on the presence of star-forming activity. Based on the small analyzed sample, we propose four evolutionary stages, namely: {\it cloud integration, stellar assembly, cloud pre-dispersal and dispersed-cloud.} The initial {\it cloud integration} stage and the final {\it dispersed cloud} stage may be distinguished from the two intermediate stages by a steeper than $-$4 power-law index of the N-PDF. The {\it cloud integration} stage and the subsequent {\it stellar assembly} stage are further distinguished from each other by the larger luminosity-to-mass ratio ($>$40 $\rm L_{\odot}/M_{\odot}$) of the latter., 14 pages, 13 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ

In this work, goat manure (GM) was evaluated as a potential feedstock for preparing biochar. Its thermochemical characteristics were first investigated by the proximate analysis, calorific value, organic and mineral component analysis, showing that the biomass obviously comprises a large percentage of volatile matter and less amount of fixed carbon. A series of pyrolysis experiments were conducted to produce biochars (i.e., GMBC) from dry GM at different pyrolysis temperatures (673, 773, 873, 973, and 1073 K) held for 30 min. To evaluate their potential for soil amendment and energy use, the resulting biochars were subject to the analyses of chemical and physical properties, including proximate analysis, elemental analysis, calorific value, mineral components, true density, and surface area/pore volume. Based on the thermochemical properties, pyrolysis temperature at around 873 K seemed to be suitable for the production of GMBC, where its calorific value (CV) (i.e., 16.28 MJ/kg) only increased about 25% as compared to CV of the dry GM (i.e., 13.06 MJ/kg). However, the temperature of around 1073 K was found to be the pyrolysis conditions for producing porous carbon-like material with the maximal BET surface area (over 93 m2 g−1) and porosity (about 0.115).

Using the Submillimeter Array (SMA), we identified two bright hot subcores, MM1a and MM1b (size ~ 1” and mass ~ 0.5 M ⊙ ) separated by about 1.6”, in the 230 ㎓ continuum emission toward the massive star-forming region DR21(OH). Both display typical hot core characteristics but have slightly different chemical properties. For example, highly saturated species show stronger emission toward MM1a and seem to be evaporating directly from the grain mantles. In contrast, simple sulfur-bearing species have brighter emission at MM1b. These features indicate that MM1a is at an earlier stage than MM1b, and the small-scale chemical differences between these two cores may result from the age difference of the order of 10⁴ years.

Most bipolar outflows are associated with individual young stellar objects and have small opening angles. Here we report the discovery of an extremely wide-angle ($\sim$180$\arcdeg$) bipolar outflow ("EWBO") in a cluster forming region AFGL 5142 from low-velocity emission of the HCN (3-2) and HCO$^{+}$ (3-2) lines. This bipolar outflow is along a north-west to south-east direction with a line-of-sight flow velocity of about 3 km~s$^{-1}$ and is spatially connected to the high-velocity jet-like outflows. It seems to be a collection of low-velocity material entrained by the high-velocity outflows due to momentum feedback. The total ejected mass and mass loss rate due to both high velocity jet-like outflows and the "EWBO" are $\sim$24.5 M$_{\sun}$ and $\sim1.7\times10^{-3}$ M$_{\sun}$~yr$^{-1}$, respectively. Global collapse of the clump is revealed by the "blue profile" in the HCO$^{+}$ (1-0) line. A hierarchical network of filaments was identified in NH$_{3}$ (1,1) emission. Clear velocity gradients of the order of 10 km~s$^{-1}$~pc$^{-1}$ are found along filaments, indicating gas inflow along the filaments. The sum of the accretion rate along filaments and mass infall rate along the line of sight is $\sim$3.1$\times10^{-3}$ M$_{\sun}$~yr$^{-1}$, which exceeds the total mass loss rate, indicating that the central cluster is probably still gaining mass. The central cluster is highly fragmented and 22 condensations are identified in 1.1 mm continuum emission. The fragmentation process seems to be determined by thermal pressure and turbulence. Biochars have received increasing attention in recent years because of their properties pertaining to soil fertility and contaminant immobilization as well as serving as carbon sinks. In this work, a series of biochars were produced from dried swine manure waste by slow pyrolysis at different temperatures (i.e., 673–1073 K). The characterization of the resulting biochars was examined for its relevance to its potential use as soil amendment. It was found that the pore properties, ash contents and pH values of all swine-manure-derived biochars basically increased as temperature increased, while the yield and nitrogen/oxygen contents decreased with increasing temperature as a result of pyrolytic volatilization during pyrolysis. From the organic and inorganic elements analyses, the manure-derived biochar was rich in soil nutrients such as N, P, Ca, Mg, and K. Furthermore, the pore, surface and chemical properties were also consistent with the observations of the SEM-EDS, XRD and FTIR. This result suggested that the mesoporous manure-derived biochar could be used as an excellent medium to soil environment.

The massive star-forming core MM1 of W75N was observed using the Submillimeter Array with {approx}1'' and 2'' spatial resolutions at 217 and 347 GHz, respectively. From the 217 GHz continuum we found that the MM1 core consists of two sources, separated by about 1'': MM1a ({approx}0.6 M{sub sun}) and MM1b ({approx}1.4 M{sub sun}), located near the radio continuum sources VLA 2/VLA 3 and VLA 1, respectively. Within MM1b, two gas clumps were found to be expanding away from VLA 1 at about {+-}3 km s{sup -1}, as a result of the most recent star formation activity in the region. Observed molecular lines show emission peaks at two positions, MM1a and MM1b: sulfur-bearing species have emission peaks toward MM1a, but methanol and saturated species at MM1b. We identified high-temperature ({approx}200 K) gas toward MM1a and the hot core in MM1b. This segregation may result from the evolution of the massive star-forming core. In the very early phase of star formation, the hot core is seen through the evaporation of dust ice-mantle species. As the mantle species are consumed via evaporation the high-temperature gas species (such as the sulfur-bearing molecules) become bright. The SiO molecule is unique in having an emission peakmore » exactly at the VLA 2 position, probably tracing a shock powered by VLA 2. The observed sulfur-bearing species show similar abundances both in MM1a and MM1b, whereas the methanol and saturated species show significant abundance enhancement toward MM1b, by about an order of magnitude, compared to MM1a.« less

We have observed the J=3-2 transition of N2H+ and N2D+ to investigate the trend of deuterium fractionation with evolutionary stage in three selected regions in the Infrared Dark Cloud (IRDC) G28.34+0.06 with the Submillimeter Telescope (SMT) and the Submillimeter Array (SMA). A comprehensible enhancement of roughly 3 orders of magnitude in deuterium fractionation over the local interstellar D/H ratio is observed in all sources. In particular, our sample of massive star-forming cores in G28.34+0.06 shows a moderate decreasing trend over a factor of 3 in the N(N2D+)/N(N2H+) ratio with evolutionary stage, a behavior resembling what previously found in low-mass protostellar cores. This suggests a possible extension for the use of the N(N2D+)/N(N2H+) ratio as an evolutionary tracer to high-mass protostellar candidates. In the most evolved core, MM1, the N2H+ (3-2) emission appears to avoid the warm region traced by dust continuum emission and emission of 13CO sublimated from grain mantles, indicating an instant release of gas-phase CO. Chlorella-based biomass from the algae-manufacturing waste was used as a low-cost biosorbent for the biosorption of malachite green (MG) in an agitated batch experiments with respect to its kinetics as a function of agitation speed (i.e., 300–500 rpm), initial MG concentration (i.e., 2.0–20.0 mg dm −3 ), biosorbent loading (i.e., 0.5–2.0 g/2.0 dm 3 ), initial pH (i.e., 3.0–11.0), and temperature (i.e., 278–318 K). The experimental data revealed that the rapid removal of cationic solute using the dead microalgae significantly depended on the initial MG concentration and algal loading. Furthermore, the biosorption kinetics well obeyed the pseudo-second-order rate equation, and could be elucidated by considering the electrostatic interactions. According to the biosorption behaviors of MG from aqueous solution using chlorella-based biomass in comparison with commercial activated carbon, this work also showed that the biosorbent can be effectively used as a low-cost biosorbent for the removal of MG from its aqueous solutions.

We present Submillimeter Array observations toward the 10^{4.7} Lsun star-forming region G240.31+0.07, in the J=2-1 transition of 12CO and 13CO and at 1.3 mm continuum, as well as the 12CO and 13CO observations from the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory to recover the extended emission filtered out by the interferometer. Maps of the 12CO and 13CO emission show a bipolar, wide-angle, quasi-parabolic molecular outflow, roughly coincident with an IR nebula revealed by the Spitzer 3.6 and 4.5 micron emission. The outflow has ~98 Msun molecular gas, making it one of the most massive molecular outflows known, and resulting in a very high mass-loss rate of 4.1 by 10^{-3} Msun yr^{-1} over a dynamical timescale of 2.4 by 10^4 yr. The 1.3 mm continuum observations with a 4" by 3" beam reveal a flattened dusty envelope of ~150 Msun, which is further resolved with a 1.2" by 1" beam into three dense cores with a total mass of ~40 Msun. The central mm core, showing evidence of active star formation, approximately coincides with the geometric center of the bipolar outflow thus most likely harbors the powering source of the outflow. Overall our observations provide the best case to date of a well-defined wide-angle molecular outflow in a >10^4 Lsun star-forming region. The outflow is morphologically and kinematically similar to low-mass protostellar outflows but has two to three orders of magnitude greater mass, momentum, and energy, and is apparently driven by an underlying wide-angle wind, hence further supports that high-mass stars up to late-O types, even in a crowded clustering environment, can form as a scaled-up version of low-mass star formation., accepted for publication in the ApJ

We have imaged the outflow from the luminous young stellar object IRAS 20126+4104 (I20126) with the Submillimeter Array in CO (3-2), HCN (4-3), and SiO (5-4) at 1''-2'' resolutions within a radius of ~20'' from the central driving source. Our observations reveal at least three different components of the outflowing gas: (1) A compact (~4000 AU) bipolar outflow toward the central young stellar object. With a dynamical timescale of ~120 yr, this component represents a very new jet/outflow activity in I20126. (2) A collimated outflow with an extent of ~0.2 pc previously detected in SiO (2-1). Both morphology and kinematics favor this component being a jet-driven bow shock system. (3) An S-shaped CO outflow with an extent of ~0.4 pc. This component records the precession history very well. Its kinematic feature, where the velocity increases with distance from the YSO, indicates, independently of other evidence, that the outflow axis is moving toward the plane of the sky. The three outflow components record the history of the primary jet precession over scales ranging from a few hundred AU to approximately 0.4 pc. Our results indicate that CO (3-2) emission is a good tracer to probe the primary jet. The gas densities and SiO relative abundances in I20126 shocks are estimated using the large velocity gradient calculations. The inferred SiO abundances of (1-5) × 10-8 in I20126 outflow lobes are comparable to the expected enhancement at shocked regions.

We present the results of the interferometric observations of the circumstellar disk surrounding MWC 297 in the continuum at 230 GHz (1.3 mm) and in the (J=2-1) rotational transitions of $^{12}$CO,$^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O using the Submillimeter Array. At a distance of 250 pc, MWC 297 is one of the closest, young massive stars (M$_{\star}$ $\sim$10 M$_{\odot}$) to us. Compact continuum emission is detected towards MWC 297 from which we estimate a disk mass (gas+dust) of 0.07 M$_{\odot}$ and a disk radius of $\le$ 80 AU. Our result demonstrates that circumstellar disks can survive around massive stars well into their main sequence phase even after they have become optically visible. Complementing our observations with the data compiled from the literature, we find the submm dust opacity index $\beta$ to be between 0.1 and 0.3. If the emission is optically thin, the low value of $\beta$ indicates the presence of relatively large grains in the disk, possibly because of grain growth. We do not detect any CO emission associated with the continuum source. We argue that the $^{13}$CO emission from the disk is likely optically thin, in which case, we derive an upper limit to the gas mass which implies significant depletion of molecular gas in the disk. The mass of this disk and the evolutionary trends observed are similar to those found for intermediate mass Herbig Ae stars and low mass T Tauri stars., Comment: 4 pages, 3 Figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

How rapidly collapsing parsec-scale massive molecular clumps feed high-mass stars, and how they fragment to form OB clusters, have been outstanding questions in the field of star-formation. In this work, we report the resolved structures and kinematics of the approximately face-on, rotating massive molecular clump, G33.92+0.11. Our high resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) images show that the spiral arm-like gas overdensities form in the eccentric gas accretion streams. First, we resolved that the dominant part of the $\sim$0.6 pc scale massive molecular clump (3.0$^{+2.8}_{-1.4}$$\cdot$10$^{3}$ $M_{\odot}$) G33.92+0.11 A is tangled with several 0.5-1 pc size molecular arms spiraling around it, which may be connected further to exterior gas accretion streams. Within G33.92+0.11 A, we resolved the $\sim$0.1 pc width gas mini-arms connecting with the two central massive (100-300 $M_{\odot}$) molecular cores. The kinematics of arms and cores elucidate a coherent accretion flow continuing from large to small scales. We demonstrate that the large molecular arms are indeed the cradles of dense cores, which are likely current or future sites of high-mass star formation. Since these deeply embedded massive molecular clumps preferentially form the highest mass stars in the clusters, we argue that dense cores fed by or formed within molecular arms play a key role in making the upper end of the stellar and core mass functions., Comment: 20 pages, formally published by ApJ

We present the phase information of solar p-mode waves constructed with an acoustic imaging technique in the solar interior. There exists a phase shift between the time series constructed with ingoing waves and outgoing waves. We find that this phase shift is different in an active region and the quiet Sun. The p-mode travel time is shorter in the magnetic regions than in the quiet Sun. We construct a three-dimensional phase shift map of the solar interior. As with the acoustic absorption images, the phase shift features of the active region in maps at the surface correlate with magnetic fields. The vertical extension of phase shift features in the active region is smaller in the phase maps constructed with shorter wavelengths. This indicates the vertical spatial resolution of these three-dimensional phase maps is sensitive to the range of modes used in constructing the signal. The actual depths of the phase shift features in the active region may be smaller than those shown in the three-dimensional phase maps.

The interaction of p-mode waves with an active region can be described by a phenomenological parameter, hereafter called the interaction parameter. The measured absorption coefficients of p-modes relate to the interaction parameter by Chou et al.'s an integral equation. We assume that the sunspot is axisymmetric and the interaction parameter is uniform in the horizontal direction inside the sunspot. The depth dependence of the sunspot radius is given in our study. Thus, the problem becomes one-dimensional: to determine the interaction parameter versus depth. We use the optimally localized averages method to invert the absorption coefficients, measured with the Taiwan Oscillation Network data and South Pole data, to infer the interaction parameter versus depth. For two sunspots we have studied, the depth dependences of the interaction parameter are similar: the interaction parameter increases rapidly, as depth increases, to a maximum value at a depth of about of 7 Mm, and then gradually drops to zero at a depth of about 28-35 Mm. The distribution of the interaction parameter also depends on the depth variation of sunspot radius in such a way that the interaction parameter anticorrelates with the sunspot radius.

We are performing a series of observations with ground-based telescopes toward Planck Galactic cold clumps (PGCCs) in the $\lambda$ Orionis complex in order to systematically investigate the effects of stellar feedback. In the particular case of PGCC G192.32-11.88, we discovered an extremely young Class 0 protostellar object (G192N) and a proto-brown dwarf candidate (G192S). G192N and G192S are located in a gravitationally bound bright-rimmed clump. The velocity and temperature gradients seen in line emission of CO isotopologues indicate that PGCC G192.32-11.88 is externally heated and compressed. G192N probably has the lowest bolometric luminosity ($\sim0.8$ L$_{\sun}$) and accretion rate (6.3$\times10^{-7}$ M$_{\sun}$~yr$^{-1}$) when compared with other young Class 0 sources (e.g. PACS Bright Red sources (PBRs)) in the Orion complex. It has slightly larger internal luminosity ($0.21\pm0.01$ L$_{\sun}$) and outflow velocity ($\sim$14 km~s$^{-1}$) than the predictions of first hydrostatic cores (FHSCs). G192N might be among the youngest Class 0 sources, which are slightly more evolved than a FHSC. Considering its low internal luminosity ($0.08\pm0.01$ L$_{\odot}$) and accretion rate (2.8$\times10^{-8}$ M$_{\sun}$~yr$^{-1}$), G192S is an ideal proto-brown dwarf candidate. The star formation efficiency ($\sim$0.3\%-0.4\%) and core formation efficiency ($\sim$1\%) in PGCC G192.32-11.88 are significantly smaller than in other giant molecular clouds or filaments, indicating that the star formation therein is greatly suppressed due to stellar feedback., Comment: 26 pages, 28 figures, 6 tables, Accepted to ApJS

Filamentary structures are ubiquitously seen in the interstellar medium. The concentrated molecular mass in the filaments allows fragmentation to occur in a shorter timescale than the timescale of the global collapse. Such hierarchical fragmentation may further assist the dissipation of excessive angular momentum. It is crucial to resolve the morphology and the internal velocity structures of the molecular filaments observationally. We perform 0".5-2".5 angular resolution interferometric observations toward the nearly face-on OB cluster forming region G33.92+0.11. Observations of various spectral lines as well as the millimeter dust continuum emission, consistently trace several $\sim$1 pc scale, clumpy molecular arms. Some of the molecular arms geometrically merge to an inner 3.0$^{{\scriptsize{+2.8}}}_{{-\scriptsize{1.4}}}\cdot10^{3}$\,$M_{\odot}$, 0.6 pc scale central molecular clump, and may directly channel the molecular gas to the warm ($\sim$50 K) molecular gas immediately surrounding the centrally embedded OB stars. The NH$_{3}$ spectra suggest a medium turbulence line width of FWHM$\lesssim$2\,km\,s$^{-1}$ in the central molecular clump, implying a $\gtrsim$10 times larger molecular mass than the virial mass. Feedbacks from shocks and the centrally embedded OB stars and localized (proto)stellar clusters, likely play a key role in the heating of molecular gas and could lead to the observed chemical stratification. Although (proto)stellar feedbacks are already present, G33.92+0.11 chemically appears to be at an early evolutionary stage given by the low abundance limit of SO$_{2}$ observed in this region., Comment: 37 pages, 23 figures

We have imaged the extremely high-velocity outflowing gas in CO (2-1) and (3-2) associated with the shell-like ultracompact HII region G5.89-0.39 at a resolution of ~3" (corresponding to ~4000 AU) with the Submillimeter Array. The integrated high-velocity (>45 km/s) CO emission reveals at least three blueshifted lobes and two redshifted lobes. These lobes belong to two outflows, one oriented N-S, the other NW-SE. The NW-SE outflow is likely identical to the previously detected Br_gamma outflow. Furthermore, these outflow lobes all clearly show a Hubble-like kinematic structure. For the first time, we estimate the temperature of the outflowing gas as a function of velocity with the large velocity gradient calculations. Our results reveal a clear increasing trend of temperature with gas velocity. Clouds of high infrared extinction are promising sites of massive star/cluster formation. A large number of cloud cores discovered in recent years allows investigation of possible evolutionary sequence among cores in early phases. We have conducted a survey of deuterium fractionation toward 15 dense cores in various evolutionary stages, from high-mass starless cores to ultracompact Hii regions, in the massive star-forming clouds of high extinction, G34.43+0.24, IRAS 18151-1208, and IRAS 18223-1243, with the Submillimeter Telescope (SMT). Spectra of N2H+ (3 - 2), N2D+ (3 - 2), and C18O (2 - 1) were observed to derive the deuterium fractionation of N2H+, Dfrac \equiv N(N2D+)/N(N2H+), as well as the CO depletion factor for every selected core. Our results show a decreasing trend in Dfrac with both gas temperature and linewidth. Since colder and quiescent gas is likely to be associated with less evolved cores, larger Dfrac appears to correlate with early phases of core evolution. Such decreasing trend resembles the behavior of Dfrac in the low-mass protostellar cores and is consistent with several earlier studies in high-mass protostellar cores. We also find a moderate increasing trend of Dfrac with the CO depletion factor, suggesting that sublimation of ice mantles alters the competition in the chemical reactions and reduces Dfrac. Our findings suggest a general chemical behavior of deuterated species in both low- and high-mass proto-stellar candidates at early stages. In addition, upper limits to the ionization degree are estimated to be within 2 \times 10^-7 and 5 \times 10^-6. Sensitive and high angular resolution ($\sim$ $0\rlap.{"}7$) (sub)millimeter line and continuum observations of the massive star forming region W3(OH) made with the Submillimeter Array are presented. We report the first detection of two bipolar outflows emanating from the young and massive "Turner-Welch" [TW] protobinary system detected by the emission of the carbon monoxide. The outflows are massive (10 M$_\odot$), highly-collimated (10$^\circ$), and seem to be the extended molecular component of the strong radio jets and a 22 GHz maser water outflow energized also by the stars in the W3(OH)TW system. Observations of the 890 $\mu$m continuum emission and the thermal emission of the CH$_3$OH might suggest the presence of two rotating circumstellar disk-like structures associated with the binary system. The disks-like structures have sizes of about 1500 AU, masses of a few M$_\odot$ and appear to energize the molecular outflows and radio jets. We estimate that the young stars feeding the outflows and that are surrounded by the massive disk-like structures maybe are B-type., Comment: Accepted to ApJL

We present the results of a high resolution study with the Submillimeter Array towards the massive star forming complex G9.62+0.19. Three sub-mm cores are detected in this region. The masses are 13, 30 and 165 M$_{\sun}$ for the northern, middle and southern dust cores, respectively. Infall motions are found with HCN (4-3) and CS (7-6) lines at the middle core (G9.62+0.19 E). The infall rate is $4.3\times10^{-3}~M_{\odot}\cdot$yr$^{-1}$. In the southern core, a bipolar-outflow with a total mass about 26 M$_{\sun}$ and a mass-loss rate of $3.6\times10^{-5}~M_{\odot}\cdot$yr$^{-1}$ is revealed in SO ($8_{7}-7_{7}$) line wing emission. CS (7-6) and HCN (4-3) lines trace higher velocity gas than SO ($8_{7}-7_{7}$). G9.62+0.19 F is confirmed to be the driving source of the outflow. We also analyze the abundances of CS, SO and HCN along the redshifted outflow lobes. The mass-velocity diagrams of the outflow lobes can be well fitted by a single power law. The evolutionary sequence of the cm/mm cores in this region are also analyzed. We present observations of CH3CN (12-11) emission at a resolution of 2" toward the shell-like ultracompact HII region G5.89-0.39 with the Submillimeter Array. The integrated CH3CN emission reveals dense and hot molecular cocoon in the periphery of the HII region G5.89-0.39, with a CH3CN deficient region roughly centered at G5.89-0.39. By analyzing the CH3CN emission using population diagram analysis, we find, for the first time, a decreasing temperature structure from 150 to 40 K with the projected distance from Feldt's star, which is thought to be responsible for powering the HII region. Our results further indicate that the majority of the heating energy in the observed dense gas is supplied by the Feldt's star. From the derived CH3CN column density profile, we conclude that the dense gas is not uniformly-distributed but centrally-concentrated, with a power-law exponent of 5.5 for r < 8000 AU, and 2.0 for 8000 AU < r < 20000 AU, where r is the distance to Feldt's star. The estimated large power index of 5.5 can be attributed to an enhancement of CH3CN abundance in the close vicinity of Feldt's star., accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

We report a dual-band observation at 223 and 654 GHz (460 micron) toward an ultracompact (UC) HII region, G240.31+0.07, with the Submillimeter Array. With a beam size of 1"5 X 0"8, the dust continuum emission is resolved into two clumps, with clump A coincident well with an H2O maser and the UC HII region. The newly discovered clump, B, about 1"3 (~8.3 X 10^3 AU) to the southwest of clump A, is also associated with H2O masers and may be a more recent star-forming site. The continuum flux densities imply an opacity spectral index of \beta = 1.5 +- 0.3, suggestive of a value lower than the canonical 2.0 found in the interstellar medium and in cold, massive cores. The presence of hot (~100 K) molecular gas is derived by the brightness ratio of two H2CO lines in the 223 GHz band. A radial velocity difference of 2.5 +- 0.4 km/s is found between the two clumps in C18O (6-5) emission. The total (nebular and stellar) mass of roughly 58 Msun in the central region is close to, but not by far larger than, the minimum mass required for the two clumps to be gravitationally bound for binary rotation. We have observed a high-mass protobinary system in the hot core W3(H2O) with the BIMA Array. Our continuum maps at wavelengths of 1.4mm and 2.8mm both achieve sub-arcsecond angular resolutions and show a double-peaked morphology. The angular separation of the two sources is 1.19" corresponding to 2.43X10^3 AU at the source distance of 2.04 kpc. The flux densities of the two sources at 1.4mm and 2.8mm have a spectral index of 3, translating to an opacity law of kappa ~ nu. The small spectral indices suggest that grain growth has begun in the hot core. We have also observed 5 K components of the CH3CN (12-11) transitions. A radial velocity difference of 2.81 km/s is found towards the two continuum peaks. Interpreting these two sources as binary components in orbit about one another, we find a minimum mass of 22 Msun for the system. Radiative transfer models are constructed to explain both the continuum and methyl cyanide line observations of each source. Power-law distributions of both density and temperature are derived. Density distributions close to the free-fall value, r^-1.5, are found for both components, suggesting continuing accretion. The derived luminosities suggest the two sources have equivalent zero-age main sequence (ZAMS) spectral type B0.5 - B0. The nebular masses derived from the continuum observations are about 5 Msun for source A and 4 Msun for source C. We have conducted a survey of deuterium fractionation of N2H+, RD(N2H+) ≡ N(N2D+)/N(N2H+), with the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO) Submillimeter Telescope (SMT) to assess the use of RD(N2H+) as an evolutionary tracer among massive protostellar/cluster cores in early stages. Our sample includes 32 dense cores in various evolutionary stages, from high-mass starless cores (HMSCs), high-mass protostellar objects (HMPOs), to ultra-compact (UC) HII regions, in infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) and high infrared extinction clouds. The results show a decreasing trend in deuterium fractionation with evolutionary stage traced by gas temperature and line width (Fig. 1). A moderate increasing trend of deuterium fractionation with the CO depletion factor is also found among cores in IRDCs and HMSCs. These suggest a general chemical behavior of deuterated species in low- and high-mass protostellar candidates. Upper limits to the ionization degree are also estimated to be in the range of 4 × 10−8 − 5 × 10−6.

Wiggling structures in a bipolar outflow may be attributed to orbital motion of a binary system or precession of an accretion disk perturbed by a companion. The shocked knots along the outflow axis display a morphology with either mirror symmetry due to the orbital motion or point symmetry resulted from disk precession. Using the Submillimeter Array (SMA), our CO (2-1) and SiO (5-4) observations show wiggling structures in the collimated bipolar outflow driven by the NGC 1333 IRAS 2A Class 0 protostar (d ~ 200 pc). By fitting the peak positions of emission knots, we can examine the lateral displacement of the molecular jet to constrain parameters of the unresolved binary system, such as the binary separation and total binary mass. With an angular resolution of ~3″, we have determined the knot positions in SiO (5–4)(Fig. 1) and CO (2–1). As a first attempt, we consider the scenario of orbital motion in a binary system and estimate a total binary mass of ~ 1M⊙ and a binary separation of roughly ~ 20 AU, corresponding to ~ 0.1″. Such a small separation makes it challenging to resolve this hypothesized proto-binary system, which is thought to be responsible for the large-scale quadrupolar outflow nearly perpendicular with each other in CO (1–0).

We present the first interferometric polarization map of the W3(OH) massive star-forming region observed with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) at 878 mum with an angular resolution of 1.5 (about 3 \times 10 AU). Polarization is detected in the W3(H2O) hot core, an extended emission structure in the north-west of W3(H2O), and part of the W3(OH) ultracompact HII region. The W3(H2O) hot core is known to be associated with a synchrotron jet along the east-west direction. In this core, the inferred magnetic field orientation is well aligned with the synchrotron jet and close to the plane of sky. Using the Chandrasekhar-Fermi method with the observed dispersion in polarization angle, we estimate a plane-of-sky magnetic field strength of 17.0 mG. Combined with water maser Zeeman measurements, the total magnetic field strength is estimated to be 17.1 mG, comparable to the field strength estimated from the synchrotron model. The magnetic field energy dominates over turbulence in this core. In addition, the depolarization effect is discerned in both SMA and JCMT measurements. Despite the great difference in angular resolutions and map extents, the polarization percentage shows a similar power-law dependence with the beam averaged column density. Stellar feedback from high-mass stars (e.g., H{\sc ii} regions) can strongly influence the surrounding interstellar medium and regulate star formation. Our new ALMA observations reveal sequential high-mass star formation taking place within one sub-virial filamentary clump (the G9.62 clump) in the G9.62+0.19 complex. The 12 dense cores (MM 1-12) detected by ALMA are at very different evolutionary stages, from starless core phase to UC H{\sc ii} region phase. Three dense cores (MM6, MM7/G, MM8/F) are associated with outflows. The mass-velocity diagrams of outflows associated with MM7/G and MM8/F can be well fitted with broken power laws. The mass-velocity diagram of SiO outflow associated with MM8/F breaks much earlier than other outflow tracers (e.g., CO, SO, CS, HCN), suggesting that SiO traces newly shocked gas, while the other molecular lines (e.g., CO, SO, CS, HCN) mainly trace the ambient gas continuously entrained by outflow jets. Five cores (MM1, MM3, MM5, MM9, MM10) are massive starless core candidates whose masses are estimated to be larger than 25 M$_{\sun}$, assuming a dust temperature of $\leq$ 20 K. The shocks from the expanding H{\sc ii} regions ("B" \& "C") to the west may have great impact on the G9.62 clump through compressing it into a filament and inducing core collapse successively, leading to sequential star formation. Our findings suggest that stellar feedback from H{\sc ii} regions may enhance the star formation efficiency and suppress the low-mass star formation in adjacent pre-existing massive clumps., Accepted to ApJ
