15. Enhancing slime mould algorithm for engineering optimization: leveraging covariance matrix adaptation and best position management.

Abstract

The slime mould algorithm (SMA), as an emerging and promising swarm intelligence algorithm, has been studied in various fields. However, SMA suffers from issues such as easily getting trapped in local optima and slow convergence, which pose challenges when applied to practical problems. Therefore, this study proposes an improved SMA, named HESMA, by incorporating the covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy (CMA-ES) and storing the best position of each individual (SBP). On one hand, CMA-ES enhances the algorithm's local exploration capability, addressing the issue of the algorithm being unable to explore the vicinity of the optimal solution. On the other hand, SBP enhances the convergence speed of the algorithm and prevents it from diverging to other inferior solutions. Finally, to validate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm, this study conducted experiments on 30 IEEE CEC 2017 benchmark functions and compared HESMA with 12 conventional metaheuristic algorithms. The results demonstrated that HESMA indeed achieved improvements over SMA. Furthermore, to highlight the performance of HESMA further, this study compared it with 13 advanced algorithms, and the results showed that HESMA outperformed these advanced algorithms significantly. Next, this study applied HESMA to five engineering optimization problems, and the experimental results revealed that HESMA exhibited significant advantages in solving real-world engineering optimization problems. Abstract

Micro-light-emitting diodes (Micro-LEDs) are considered as the most promising display technologies, while 3D display can provide users with an immersive visual experience and represents the cutting-edge display technology. Polarized Micro-LEDs can be used for polarization-based 3D display technology. In our previous work, circularly polarized and linearly polarized Micro-LEDs have been reported, yet the extinction ratio (ER) still needs to be further improved. The high proportion of sidewalls emission of Micro-LED hinders the further improvement of polarization. In this work, we numerically and experimentally investigated an improved linearly polarized Micro-LED via rational sidewall engineering. Our results show that, at a current density of 300 A/cm2, ER of Micro-LED with a sidewall reflector (RLP Micro-LED) for chip diameters of 10, 20, 30, and 40 μm is 15.85, 16.09, 16.20, and 16.21 dB, respectively, demonstrating a 29.38%, 21.56%, 18.9%, and 12.08% increment compared with linearly polarized Micro-LED without reflector (LP Micro-LED). We also found that by adjusting the sidewall tilt angle, the polarization efficiency and ER values of RLP Micro-LED can be further improved. 32. Ultra-Small Size Micro-LEDs With Enhanced Efficiency for Near-Eye Display

Abstract

Micro Light-emitting diodes (Micro-LEDs) array for near-eye display with pixel dimensions of ${1}.{3}\times {1}.{5}~\mu $ m2 were fabricated, corresponding to a resolution of 10040 pixels per inch (PPI). Optimized N2O plasma treatment process was deployed to minimize the sidewall non-radiative recombination and increase radiative efficiency of Micro-LEDs. The experimental results demonstrated a significant improvement in external quantum efficiency (EQE) of blue and green Micro-LEDs, with peak EQE of 22.3% and 19.3%, respectively. High brightness and optical power density was acquired exceeding ${5}\times {10} ^{{7}}$ nits and ${7}\times {10} ^{{4}}$ mW/cm2. And excellent wavelength and efficiency stability were demonstrated with respect to the temperature. This results illustrate an immense potential of Micro-LEDs for high resolution near-eye display applications.

Abstract

As an important method for humans to perceive their environment, touch has not been fully integrated into virtual reality technology. Existing tactile feedback devices have the problem of being large and expensive, and most studies have not explored the ability of the affected area to distinguish an external stimulus, thus it is difficult to perform natural human-computer interactions. This article describes the development of a device that can transmit multimodal tactile information in accordance with the characteristics of human hand skin perception during a human-computer interaction. The device has 10 miniature vibrators ( $\Phi =10$ mm, d=2.7 mm) and 2 semiconductor refrigerators (23 mm $\times23$ mm $\times4$ mm), which can achieve temperature and vibration feedback. First, the structure and working principle of the device were introduced, and the device’s performance was analyzed. Subsequently, an experiment based on the perception characteristics of human hand skin was designed. The experiment determined the vibration level (1-5), heating level (I-IV), and cooling level (I-III) that are consistent with the perception characteristics of the hand skin. Finally, a chemical experiment was designed to test the performance of the device. The results of the experiment showed that 92% of the volunteers thought the device had a higher sense of authenticity and immersion than the traditional virtual reality experience.

49. ADAR: Application-Specific Data Allocation and Reprogramming Optimization for 3-D TLC Flash Memory

Abstract

High bit-density flash memories, such as triple-level cell (TLC) and quad-level cell (QLC), have been widely used in flash memory-based storage systems, offering significantly high capacity. However, these high bit-density flash memories suffer from asymmetric access performance on the different pages that sharing the same physical cells. Meanwhile, 3-D flash memory adopts stacking technology to increase capacity and reduce cost per bit. The flash unit can be reprogrammed many times as long as the voltage increases. The reprogramming technology is also an effective solution for further increasing the 3-D flash capacity, allowing multiple program operations in an erase cycle. Considering the restrictions of reprogram operations, solid-state drives (SSDs) should capture the access pattern to perform more reprogramming operations to realize the joint optimization of read and write performance. In this work, we propose an application-specific data allocation and reprogramming technique named ADAR to enhance the read and write performance of 3-D TLC flash memory-based SSDs. The core idea is to allocate low-latency least significant bit (LSB) and central significant bit pages to frequently updated write data (termed hot write data) to improve the write performance, and reprogram the pages from high-latency pages (e.g., most significant bit page) to low-latency pages (e.g., LSB page mode) to enhance the read performance while initially storing frequently read data (termed hot read data) in high-latency pages. We explored data access patterns and designed an effective hotness identification method to present a new data allocation and reprogramming technique for 3-D TLC flash memory. Based on a modified 3-D TLC SSD simulator with typical workloads, our evaluation showed that our technique achieved 35.36% and 25.72% performance improvements in read and write latencies, respectively.
