Vitiligo is a common cutaneous depigmentation disorder. Although multiple treatment options are available, no single modality is satisfactory for all patients. Several studies have demonstrated that prostaglandin analogues can potentially treat cutaneous depigmentation, but the evidence is limited to their inconsistent study design.A systematic review was performed for studies published before 29 June 2021, in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, or the Cochrane Library. The primary outcome of pooled analysis was the repigmentation efficacy of local prostaglandin analogues compared with other therapies for vitiligo.Six randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and three non-RCTs were included in this systematic review, and seven studies among them were used for the meta-analysis. The pooled analysis demonstrated that local prostaglandin analogues could significantly increase repigmentation along with narrowband ultraviolet B phototherapy compared with phototherapy alone. Furthermore, the repigmentation efficacy of topical prostaglandin analogues was not significantly different from that of topical tacrolimus. In summary, local prostaglandin analogues either used alone or as add-on therapy could be safe and effective therapies for vitiligo.

Rosacea is associated with several comorbidities, but its relationship with psychiatric disorders remains controversial. We aimed to investigate the association of rosacea with depression and anxiety.A systematic review was performed of relevant observational studies in the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Wanfang databases from inception to June 8, 2021. The inclusion criteria for eligible studies were observational studies comparing the incidence or prevalence of depression or anxiety between patients with rosacea and individuals without rosacea. We conducted meta-analyses with a random-effects model. The main outcome was pooled analysis of prevalence or incidence of depression and anxiety in patients with rosacea.We included nine studies with 101,114,209 patients with rosacea. A pooled analysis from cross-sectional and case-control studies revealed that patients with rosacea were significantly more likely to have depression (crude odds ratio [OR], 2.855; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.258-6.481) and anxiety (crude OR, 2.373; 95% CI, 1.448-3.888) than matched controls; however, adjusted ORs showed no significant association. Furthermore, the meta-analysis from cohort studies indicated that patients with rosacea have significantly higher risks of developing depression (adjusted incidence rate ratio [IRR], 2.443; 95% CI, 1.603-3.723) and anxiety (adjusted IRR, 2.181; 95% CI, 1.660-2.864).Data for a subgroup analysis based on different demographic factors were insufficient.Current findings provide more evidence that rosacea is significantly associated with depression and anxiety, and rosacea may predispose patients to develop depression and anxiety. Clinicians should be aware of the psychological aspects of rosacea.

Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) can evidently reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) in cases of open-angle glaucoma. Several studies have investigated the effectiveness of anti-inflammatory treatment to relieve discomfort after SLT, but whether such treatments affect the response of SLT remains uncertain.We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library for relevant studies published before 31 March 2021. The major outcomes were the efficacy of post-SLT anti-inflammatory treatment on IOP reduction, incidence of discomfort, and anterior chamber inflammation compared with those of placebo agents.Five randomized controlled trials with 235 eyes receiving anti-inflammatory treatment and 170 eyes receiving placebo agents were included in the meta-analysis. Compared with placebo, no significant differences were present in IOP reduction effects upon using topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or steroid post-SLT. The results were consistent from 1 to 6 months during follow-up. Furthermore, anti-inflammatory treatment had no significant effects on pain or discomfort or the presence of anterior chamber cells 1 h to 1 week post-SLT.Topical anti-inflammatory treatment after SLT for patients with glaucoma neither significantly affected IOP reduction nor remarkably relieved clinical discomfort and anterior chamber inflammation. Hence, regular use of post-SLT anti-inflammatory treatment may be unnecessary.

Behçet disease (BD) is a systemic vasculitis. In addition to the mucocutaneous lesions, the vascular injury of pathophysiology in BD is theoretically correlated with cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to elucidate the association of BD with ischaemic heart diseases (IHDs) and stroke.A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases was performed for all relevant observational studies from database inception until 10 July 2021. No language restriction was applied. A random-effects model was used for meta-analysis.A total of six observational studies consisting of three cohort studies, two cross-sectional studies and one study with both study designs were adopted in the meta-analysis. The numbers of patients with BD and healthy controls were 9,813 and 41,802, respectively. The pooled analysis demonstrated no significant association between BD and IHD. By contrast, we found that patients with BD had a significantly higher risk of stroke (adjusted hazard ratio, 2.083; 95% confidence interval, 1.339-3.240; p = 0.001) than healthy controls. We observed substantial heterogeneity across studies in few meta-analyses, but no significant publication bias was detected in any of the meta-analyses.BD was significantly associated with stroke but not IHD. Physicians should be aware of possible vascular and neurological complications during care of patients with BD.

Background The association between dyslipidemia and xanthelasma palpebrarum (XP) remains controversial, and no definite evidence has indicated atherosclerosis risk in patients with XP. Objective The present study was a systematic review and meta-analysis to elucidate the association of serum lipid profiles and risk of atherosclerotic diseases with XP. Methods We systematically searched for the eligible comparative studies published before April 15, 2019, in the databases of PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library. A random-effects model was used to calculate the standard mean difference with 95% confidence interval for each pooled estimate. Results The qualitative analyses included 15 case-control studies with 854 patients with XP. Compared with the controls, the patients with XP had significantly higher serum levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoproteins, significantly higher apolipoprotein B levels, and relatively lower apolipoprotein A1 levels, and the carotid intima-media thickness was significantly higher. Conclusion Patients with XP had significantly higher serum levels of atherogenic low-density lipoproteins and bore significantly higher risk of atherosclerosis than the controls. Careful monitoring and targeted intervention for prevention of cardiovascular diseases is essential for these patients.

Anti-programmed cell death 1 (anti-PD-1) agent is a promise in cancer immunotherapy for various advanced malignancies, but dermatologic toxicities are common during therapy. We report one advanced transitional cell carcinoma patient who developed multiple bullous skin lesions over bilateral lower extremities after anti-PD-1 antibody pembrolizumab treatment. Skin biopsy revealed subepidermal cleft, wedge-shaped hypergranulosis, saw-tooth acanthosis, and presence of interface band-like lymphohistiocytic infiltrate compatible with bullous lichen planus-like reactions. Potent topical steroid and temporary cessation of pembrolizumab relieved the skin eruptions. Early recognition and appropriate management of rare bullous dermatologic toxicities are critical in patients receiving immune checkpoint blockade therapy.

Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy is one of the most common indications for corneal transplantation, and impaired anti-oxidative function is observed in corneal endothelial cells (CECs). Curcumin is well-known for its anti-oxidative property; but, no study has examined the effect of curcumin on anti-oxidative therapeutic roles in corneal endothelial disease. In our experiments, oxidative stress 0.25 mM tert-butyl hydroperoxide for 2 h was induced in immortalized human CECs pretreated with curcumin. Cell behavior and viability, reactive oxygen species production, and the protein expression of the kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1)/nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2(Nrf2)/antioxidant response element (ARE) pathway were examined; the Keap1/Nrf2/ARE pathway is crucial anti-oxidative pathway of curcumin. The results showed that pretreatment with 12.5 μM curcumin significantly reduced the ROS production and improved the survival of CECs under oxidative stress. In addition, curcumin pretreatment significantly increased the expression of nuclear Nrf2, and the productions of superoxide dismutase 1 and heme oxygenase-1, which were the target anti-oxidative enzymes of the Keap1/Nrf2/ARE pathway. Our findings showed that curcumin enhanced the growth and differentiation of CECs under oxidative stress. The activation of Keap1/Nrf2/ARE pathway by curcumin was crucial for CECs to improve their anti-oxidative capacity.

High birth weight indicates the future risk of obesity and increased fat mass in childhood. Maternal gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) or overweight are powerful predictors of high birth weight. Studies on probiotic supplementation during pregnancy have reported its benefits in modulating gut microbiota composition and improving glucose and lipid metabolism in pregnant women. Therefore, probiotic intervention during pregnancy was proposed to interrupt the transmission of obesity from mothers to newborns. Thus, we performed a meta-analysis to investigate the effect of probiotic intervention in pregnant women with GDM or overweight on newborn birth weight. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases up to 18 December 2019. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing pregnant women with GDM or overweight who received probiotic intervention during pregnancy with those receiving placebo were eligible for the analysis. Newborn birth weights were pooled to calculate the mean difference with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Two reviewers assessed the trial quality and extracted data independently. Seven RCTs involving 1093 participants were included in the analysis. Compared with the placebo, probiotics had little effect on newborn birth weight of pregnant women with GDM or overweight (mean difference = &minus, 10.27, 95% CI = &minus, 90.17 to 69.63, p = 0.801). The subgroup analysis revealed that probiotic intake by women with GDM decreased newborn birth weight, whereas probiotic intake by obese pregnant women increased newborn birth weight. Thus, no evidence indicates that probiotic intake by pregnant women with GDM or overweight can control newborn birth weight.

Background Acne scars are common and challenging clinical complications of acne vulgaris. Ablative fractional carbon dioxide (CO2) laser is a well-established treatment for acne scars; however, some postlaser adverse effects have been noted. Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can improve tissue regeneration. Several studies have investigated the efficacy of combination therapy of CO2 laser and PRP for acne scars. Objectives The authors sought to conduct a meta-analysis of the efficacy of PRP combined with ablative fractional CO2 laser for treating acne scars by examining clinical trial results. Methods A systematic review was performed by searching PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science, and a meta-analysis was conducted to assess the clinical outcomes after combination therapy of PRP and ablative fractional CO2 laser compared with laser alone. Results We identified 4 eligible studies for the meta-analysis, including 3 randomized controlled trials. Our results demonstrated that clinical improvement after combination therapy was significantly higher than that after laser alone (odds ratio = 2.992, P = 0.001). Regarding major side effects, patients who underwent combination therapy experienced significantly shorter duration of crust compared with CO2 laser alone (standard mean difference = −1.140, P < 0.001); relatively shorter durations of erythema and edema were also noted after combination therapy. Furthermore, patient satisfaction rates were significantly higher after combination therapy than after laser alone (odds ratio = 3.169, P = 0.002). Conclusions The combination of autologous PRP and ablative fractional CO2 laser has synergistic positive effects on the clinical outcomes for acne scars and can accelerate the recovery of laser-damaged skin.
