Abstract A two-dimensional (2D) Weyl semimetal, akin to a spinful variant of graphene, represents a topological matter characterized by Weyl fermion-like quasiparticles in low dimensions. The spinful linear band structure in two dimensions gives rise to distinctive topological properties, accompanied by the emergence of Fermi string edge states. We report the experimental realization of a 2D Weyl semimetal, bismuthene monolayer grown on SnS(Se) substrates. Using spin and angle-resolved photoemission and scanning tunneling spectroscopies, we directly observe spin-polarized Weyl cones, Weyl nodes, and Fermi strings, providing consistent evidence of their inherent topological characteristics. Our work opens the door for the experimental study of Weyl fermions in low-dimensional materials.

Abstract Background Patients undergoing radiation therapy (RT) often experience anxiety, which may jeopardize the treatment success. The efficacy of music interventions in reducing anxiety remains contentious. This randomized trial aimed to evaluate the impact of music listening on anxiety symptoms in patients undergoing initial RT. Methods First-time RT patients were randomly allocated to experimental and control groups. The Brief Symptom Rating Scale (BSRS-5), Distress Thermometer (DT), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI-C) were administered pre- and post-RT. Changes in physiological anxiety symptoms were monitored over 10 consecutive days starting from the first day of RT. The experimental group received music during RT; the control group did not. The generalized linear mixed model was used to estimate the pre–post difference in the BSRS-5, DT, and BAI-C scores between the music intervention and control group. Results This study included 50 patients each in the experimental and control groups. BSRS-5 and DT scores were significantly reduced in the experimental group post-RT (p = 0.0114 and p = 0.0023, respectively). When music listening was discontinued, these scores rebounded. Abstract Protected surface states arising from non-trivial bandstructure topology in semimetals can potentially enable advanced device functionalities in compute, memory, interconnect, sensing, and communication. This necessitates a fundamental understanding of surface-state transport in nanoscale topological semimetals. Here, we investigate quantum transport in a prototypical topological semimetal NbAs to evaluate the potential of this class of materials for beyond-Cu interconnects in highly-scaled integrated circuits. Using density functional theory (DFT) coupled with non-equilibrium Green’s function (NEGF) calculations, we show that the resistance-area R A product in NbAs films decreases with decreasing thickness at the nanometer scale, in contrast to a nearly constant R A product in ideal Cu films. This anomalous scaling originates from the disproportionately large number of surface conduction states which dominate the ballistic conductance by up to 70% in NbAs thin films. We also show that this favorable R A scaling persists even in the presence of surface defects, in contrast to R A sharply increasing with reducing thickness for films of conventional metals, such as Cu, in the presence of surface defects. These results underscore the potential of topological semimetals as future back-end-of-line (BEOL) interconnect metals.

Abstract The nonlinear Hall effect (NLHE) is a phenomenon which could produce a transverse Hall voltage in a time-reversal-invariant material. Here, we report the real space characterizations of NLHE evaluated through quantum transport in TaIrTe4 nanoribbon without the explicit Berry curvature dipole (BCD) information. We first characterize the NLHE in both transverse confined directions in global-level measurement. The impact of quantum confinement in NLHE is evaluated by adjusting the width of nanoribbons. Then, the probing area is trimmed to the atomic scale to evaluate the local texture, where we discover its patterns differ among the probed neighboring atomic groups. The analysis of charge distribution reveals the connections between NLHE’s local patterns and its non-centrosymmetric nature, rendering nearly an order of Hall voltage enhancement through probe positioning. Our work paves the way to expand the range of NLHE study and unveil its physics in more versatile material systems.

Abstract Proposed mechanisms for large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in magnetic topological semimetals include diverging Berry curvatures of Weyl nodes, anticrossing nodal rings or points of non-trivial bands. Here we demonstrate that a half-topological semimetal (HTS) state near a topological critical point can provide an alternative mechanism for a large AHE via systematic studies on an antiferromagnetic (AFM) half-Heusler compound TbPdBi. We not only observe a large AHE with tanΘH ≈ 2 in its field-driven ferromagnetic (FM) phase, but also find a distinct Hall resistivity peak in its canted AFM phase. Moreover, we observe a large negative magnetoresistance with a value of ~98%. Our in-depth theoretical modelling indicates that these exotic transport properties originate from the HTS state which exhibits Berry curvature cancellation between the trivial spin-up and nontrivial spin-down bands. Our study offers alternative strategies for improved materials design for spintronics and other applications.

Abstract The spacetime light cone is central to the definition of causality in the theory of relativity. Recently, links between relativistic and condensed matter physics have been uncovered, where relativistic particles can emerge as quasiparticles in the energy-momentum space of matter. Here, we unveil an energy-momentum analogue of the spacetime light cone by mapping time to energy, space to momentum, and the light cone to the Weyl cone. We show that two Weyl quasiparticles can only interact to open a global energy gap if they lie in each other’s energy-momentum dispersion cones–analogous to two events that can only have a causal connection if they lie in each other’s light cones. Moreover, we demonstrate that the causality of surface chiral modes in quantum matter is entangled with the causality of bulk Weyl fermions. Furthermore, we identify a unique quantum horizon region and an associated ‘thick horizon’ in the emergent causal structure.

Abstract Nontrivial band topologies in semimetals lead to robust surface states that can contribute dominantly to the total conduction. This may result in reduced resistivity with decreasing feature size contrary to conventional metals, which may highly impact the semiconductor industry. Here we study the resistivity scaling of a representative topological semimetal CoSi using realistic band structures and Green’s function methods. We show that there exists a critical thickness d c dividing different scaling trends. Above d c , when the defect density is low such that surface conduction dominates, resistivity reduces with decreasing thickness; when the defect density is high such that bulk conduction dominates, resistivity increases as in conventional metals. Below d c where bulk states are depopulated, the persistent Fermi-arc remnant states give rise to decreasing resistivity down to the ultrathin limit, unlike topological insulators. The observed CoSi scaling can apply to broad classes of topological semimetals, providing guidelines for materials screening in back-end-of-line interconnect applications.

In one-dimensional systems, electronic interactions lead to a breakdown of Fermi liquid theory and the formation of a Tomonaga Luttinger Liquid (TLL), as recently reported in the helical edge states of quantum spin Hall insulators. Here, the authors show that the many-body interactions in the helical TLL of 1T’- WTe2 can be effectively controlled by the dielectric screening via the substrate.

Abstract Topological Dirac materials are attracting a lot of attention because they offer exotic physical phenomena. An exhaustive search coupled with first-principles calculations was implemented to investigate 10 Zintl compounds with a chemical formula of CaM2X2 (M = Zn or Cd, X = N, P, As, Sb, or Bi) under three crystal structures: CaAl2Si2-, ThCr2Si2-, and BaCu2S2-type crystal phases. All of the materials were found to energetically prefer the CaAl2Si2-type structure based on total ground state energy calculations. Symmetry-based indicators are used to evaluate their topological properties. Interestingly, we found that CaM2Bi2 (M = Zn or Cd) are topological crystalline insulators. Further calculations under the hybrid functional approach and analysis using k · p model reveal that they exhibit topological Dirac semimetal (TDSM) states, where the four-fold degenerate Dirac points are located along the high symmetry line in-between Г to A points. These findings are verified through Green's function surface state calculations under HSE06. Finally, phonon spectra calculations revealed that CaCd2Bi2 is thermodynamically stable. The Zintl phase of AM2X2 compounds have not been identified in any topological material databases, thus can be a new playground in the search for new topological materials.

Abstract Most topological insulators (TIs) discovered today in spinful systems can be transformed from topological semimetals (TSMs) with vanishing bulk gap via introducing the spin-orbit coupling (SOC), which manifests the intrinsic links between the gapped topological insulator phases and the gapless TSMs. Recently, we have discovered a family of TSMs in time-reversal invariant spinless systems, which host butterfly-like nodal-lines (NLs) consisting of a pair of identical concentric intersecting coplanar ellipses (CICE). In this Communication, we unveil the intrinsic link between this exotic class of nodal-line semimetals (NLSMs) and a $${{\mathbb{Z}}}_{4}$$ Z 4 = 2 topological crystalline insulator (TCI), by including substantial SOC. We demonstrate that in three space groups (i.e., P b a m (No.55), P4/m b m (No.127), and P42/m b c (No.135)), the TCI supports a fourfold Dirac fermion on the (001) surface protected by two glide symmetries, which originates from the intertwined drumhead surface states of the CICE NLs. The higher order topology is further demonstrated by the emergence of one-dimensional helical hinge states, indicating the discovery of a higher order topological insulator protected by a glide symmetry.

Abstract A Weyl semimetal has Weyl nodes that always come in pairs with opposite chiralities. Notably, different ways of connection between nodes are possible and would lead to distinct topologies. Here we identify their differences in many respects from two proposed models with different vorticities. One prominent feature is the behaviour of zeroth Landau levels (LLs) under magnetic field. We demonstrate that the magnetic tunneling does not always expel LLs from zero energy because the number of zero-energy modes is protected by the vorticity of the Weyl nodes, instead of the chirality. Other respects in disorder effects for weak (anti-)localization, surface Fermi arcs, and Weyl-node annihilation, are interesting consequences that await more investigation in the future.

Single-atomic impurities may induce novel quantum state, but they are unexplored in topological magnets. Here, the authors report spin-down polarized bound states which further interact with neighboring states to form spin-orbit split quantized orbitals in a topological magnet Co3Sn2S2.

The search for magnetic Weyl fermion remains a challenge. Here, the authors report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and magnetotransport measurements resolving the topological properties of Weyl fermion quasiparticles in magnetic non-centrosymmetric crystal PrAlGe.

Spectroscopic signatures of magnetic response in topological materials remain very limited. Here, the authors observe a quasi-linear field dependent transverse magnetization and a non-saturating parallel magnetization in a Weyl semimetal TaAs under strong magnetic field, suggesting a signature of relativistic quasiparticles in topological materials.

The nature of non-saturating magnetoresistance (MR) in topological materials is an important issue in condensed matter research but remains elusive. A new type of surface state has recently been reported in ZrSiSe but its physical properties remain unclear. Here, Zhu, Chang, Huang, et al. report rotational symmetry breaking, healing effect and anomalous Umklapp scattering arising from the nonsymmorphic effect of the floating band state on ZrSiSe (001) surface.

Recent reports of a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in ferromagnetic Weyl semimetals (FM WSMs) have led to a resurgence of interest in this enigmatic phenomenon. However, due to a lack of tunable materials, the interplay between the intrinsic mechanism caused by Berry curvature and extrinsic mechanisms due to scattering remains unclear in FM WSMs. In this contribution, we present a thorough investigation of both the extrinsic and intrinsic AHEs in a new family of FM WSMs, PrAlGe1−xSix, where x can be tuned continuously. Based on the first-principles calculations, we show that the two end members, PrAlGe and PrAlSi, have different Fermi surfaces, but similar Weyl node structures. Experimentally, we observe moderate changes in the anomalous Hall coefficient (RS), but significant changes in the ordinary Hall coefficient (R0) in PrAlGe1−xSix as a function of x. By comparing the magnitude of R0 and RS, we identify two regimes: |R0| < |RS| for x ≤ 0.5 and |R0| > |RS| for x > 0.5. Through a detailed scaling analysis, we uncover a universal anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) from intrinsic contribution when x ≤ 0.5. Such a universal AHC is absent for x > 0.5. Our study, thus, reveals the significance of extrinsic mechanisms in FM WSMs and reports the first observation of the transition from the intrinsic to extrinsic AHE in PrAlGe1−xSix.

The mid-infrared technologies are essential to various applications but suffer from limited materials with suitable bandgap. Here the authors demonstrate that two-dimensional atomically thin PtSe2 with variable bandgaps in the mid-infrared via layer and defect engineering is highly promising for mid-infrared optoelectronics.

Abstract The abounding possibilities of discovering novel materials has driven enhanced research effort in the field of materials physics. Only recently, the quantum anomalous hall effect (QAHE) was realized in magnetic topological insulators (TIs) albeit existing at extremely low temperatures. Here, we predict that MPn (M =Ti, Zr, and Hf; Pn =Sb and Bi) honeycombs are capable of possessing QAH insulating phases based on first-principles electronic structure calculations. We found that HfBi, HfSb, TiBi, and TiSb honeycomb systems possess QAHE with the largest band gap of 15 meV under the effect of tensile strain. In low-buckled HfBi honeycomb, we demonstrated the change of Chern number with increasing lattice constant. The band crossings occurred at low symmetry points. We also found that by varying the buckling distance we can induce a phase transition such that the band crossing between two Hf d-orbitals occurs along high-symmetry point K2. Moreover, edge states are demonstrated in buckled HfBi zigzag nanoribbons. This study contributes additional novel materials to the current pool of predicted QAH insulators which have promising applications in spintronics.

Weyl semimetals are interesting because they are characterized by topological invariants, but specific examples discovered to date tend to have complicated band structures with many Weyl points. Here, the authors show that TaIrTe4 has only four Weyl points, the minimal number required by time-reversal symmetry.

Topological Dirac and Weyl semimetals are currently attracting intense interest due to their exotic physical properties. Transition metal diarsenides such as MoAs_{2} and WAs_{2} have been reported to harbor very high magnetoresistance suggesting the possible existence of a topological quantum state, although this conclusion remains dubious. Here, using systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and parallel first-principles calculations, we discuss the electronic structures of TAs_{2} (T = Mo, W). Two different cleavage planes of MoAs_{2} are found to harbor distinctly different surface states. Our experiments show the presence of Dirac-like dispersions on the (001) plane, which our first-principles calculations ascribe to trivial surface states. Our in-depth study also finds WAs_{2} to possess a trivial electronic structure. Our study emphasizes the importance of identifying the cleavage plane in low-symmetry systems and indicates that topological semimetallic states are not the key for generating high magnetoresistance in MoAs_{2} and WAs_{2}.

In this paper, by introducing a generalized quantum-kinetic model which is coupled self-consistently with Maxwell and Boltzmann transport equations, we elucidate the significance of using input from first-principles band-structure computations for an accurate description of ultra-fast dephasing and scattering dynamics of electrons in graphene. In particular, we start with the tight-binding model (TBM) for calculating band structures of solid covalent crystals based on localized Wannier orbital functions, where the employed hopping integrals in TBM have been parameterized for various covalent bonds. After that, the general TBM formalism has been applied to graphene to obtain both band structures and wave functions of electrons beyond the regime of effective low-energy theory. As a specific example, these calculated eigenvalues and eigen vectors have been further utilized to compute the Bloch-function form factors and intrinsic Coulomb diagonal-dephasing rates for induced optical coherence of electron-hole pairs in spectral and polarization functions, as well as the energy-relaxation time from extrinsic impurity scattering of electrons for non-equilibrium occupation in band transport.

Abstract Topological metals and semimetals (TMs) have recently drawn significant interest. These materials give rise to condensed matter realizations of many important concepts in high-energy physics, leading to wide-ranging protected properties in transport and spectroscopic experiments. It has been well-established that the known TMs can be classified by the dimensionality of the topologically protected band degeneracies. While Weyl and Dirac semimetals feature zero-dimensional points, the band crossing of nodal-line semimetals forms a one-dimensional closed loop. In this paper, we identify a TM that goes beyond the above paradigms. It shows an exotic configuration of degeneracies without a well-defined dimensionality. Specifically, it consists of 0D nexus with triple-degeneracy that interconnects 1D lines with double-degeneracy. We show that, because of the novel form of band crossing, the new TM cannot be described by the established results that characterize the topology of the Dirac and Weyl nodes. Moreover, triply-degenerate nodes realize emergent fermionic quasiparticles not present in relativistic quantum field theory. We present materials candidates. Our results open the door for realizing new topological phenomena and fermions including transport anomalies and spectroscopic responses in metallic crystals with nontrivial topology beyond the Weyl/Dirac paradigm.

A Type II Weyl fermion semimetal has been predicted in MoxW1−xTe2, but it awaits experimental evidence. Here, Belopolski et al. observe a topological Fermi arc in MoxW1−xTe2, showing it originates from a Type II Weyl fermion and offering a new platform to study novel transport phenomena in Weyl semimetals.

A superconducting material containing a topologically non-trivial electronic band structure presents the possibility of realizing Majorana states as well as exotic excitations with potential in quantum computing. Here, the authors evidence the required ingredients in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor BiPd.

The charge density wave (CDW) in 1 T –TiSe _2 harbors a nontrivial symmetry configuration. It is important to understand this underlying symmetry both for gaining a handle on the mechanism of CDW formation and for probing the CDW experimentally. Here, based on first-principles computations within the framework of the density functional theory, we unravel the connection between the symmetries of the normal and CDW states and the electronic structure of 1 T –TiSe _2 . Our analysis highlights the key role of irreducible representations of the electronic states and the occurrence of band gaps in the system in driving the CDW. By showing how symmetry-related topology can be obtained directly from the electronic structure, our study provides a practical pathway in search of topological CDW insulators.

A charge density wave (CDW) of a nonzero ordering vector q couple electronic states at k and k + q statically, giving rise to a reduced Brillouin zone due to the band folding effect. Its structure, referred to an irreducible representation of the little group of q , would change the symmetry of the system and electronic structure accompanying possible change of band inversion, offering a chance of the topological phase transition. Monolayer 1 T -TiSe _2 is investigated for it shows an unconventional CDW phase having a triple- q ${M}_{1}^{-}$ structure. Moreover, the coupling between the triple- q component of the ${M}_{1}^{-}$ CDW will inevitably produces a small ${M}_{1}^{+}$ CDW. The CDW yields a band inversion in 1 T -TiSe _2 but different types of CDW can affect the electronic structure and system topology differently. The impact of CDW of different types was studied by utilizing a symmetrization–antisymmetrization technique to extract the ${M}_{1}^{-}$ and ${M}_{1}^{+}$ CDW contributions in the density functional theory-based tight-binding model and study their effects. The results are consistent with the parity consideration, improving understanding of topology for a CDW system with and without parity.

Objectives: The World Health Organization named Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (SM) a critical multi-drug resistant threat, necessitating rapid diagnostic strategies. Traditional culturing methods require up to 96 h, including 72 h for bacterial growth, identification with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) through protein profile analysis, and 24 h for antibiotic susceptibility testing. In this study, we aimed at developing an artificial intelligence-clinical decision support system (AI-CDSS) by integrating MALDI-TOF MS and machine learning to quickly identify levofloxacin and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole resistance in SM, optimizing treatment decisions. Methods: We selected 8,662 SM from 165,299 MALDI-TOF MS-analysed bacterial specimens, collected from a major medical centre and four secondary hospitals. We exported mass-to-charge values and intensity spectral profiles from MALDI-TOF MS .mzML files to predict antibiotic susceptibility testing results, obtained with the VITEK-2 system using machine learning algorithms. We optimized the models with GridSearchCV and 5-fold cross-validation. Results: We identified distinct spectral differences between resistant and susceptible SM strains, demonstrating crucial resistance features. The machine learning models, including random forest, light-gradient boosting machine, and XGBoost, exhibited high accuracy. We established an AI-CDSS to offer healthcare professionals swift, data-driven advice on antibiotic use. Conclusions: MALDI-TOF MS and machine learning integration into an AI-CDSS significantly improved rapid SM resistance detection. This system reduced the identification time of resistant strains from 24 h to minutes after MALDI-TOF MS identification, providing timely and data-driven guidance. Combining MALDI-TOF MS with machine learning could enhance clinical decision-making and improve SM infection treatment outcomes.

Abstract In this study, arrays of μLEDs in four different sizes (5 × 5 μm2, 10 × 10 μm2, 25 × 25 μm2, 50 × 50 μm2) were fabricated using a flip-chip bonding process. Two passivation processes were investigated with one involving a single layer of SiO2 deposited using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and the other incorporating Al2O3 deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) beneath the SiO2 layer. Owing to superior coverage and protection, the double-layers passivation process resulted in a three-order lower leakage current of μLEDs in the 5 μm chip-sized μLED arrays. Furthermore, higher light output power of μLEDs was observed in each chip-sized μLED array with double layers passivation. Particularly, the highest EQE value 21.9% of μLEDs array with 5 μm × 5 μm chip size was achieved with the double-layers passivation. The EQE value of μLEDs array was improved by 4.4 times by introducing the double-layers passivation as compared with that of μLEDs array with single layer passivation. Finally, more uniform light emission patterns were observed in the μLEDs with 5 μm × 5 μm chip size fabricated by double-layer passivation process using ImageJ software.

Abstract Data scarcity is one of the most critical issues impeding the development of prediction models for chemical effects. Multitask learning algorithms leveraging knowledge from relevant tasks showed potential for dealing with tasks with limited data. However, current multitask methods mainly focus on learning from datasets whose task labels are available for most of the training samples. Since datasets were generated for different purposes with distinct chemical spaces, the conventional multitask learning methods may not be suitable. This study presents a novel multitask learning method MTForestNet that can deal with data scarcity problems and learn from tasks with distinct chemical space. The MTForestNet consists of nodes of random forest classifiers organized in the form of a progressive network, where each node represents a random forest model learned from a specific task. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the MTForestNet, 48 zebrafish toxicity datasets were collected and utilized as an example. Among them, two tasks are very different from other tasks with only 1.3% common chemicals shared with other tasks. In an independent test, MTForestNet with a high area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) value of 0.911 provided superior performance over compared single-task and multitask methods. The overall toxicity derived from the developed models of zebrafish toxicity is well correlated with the experimentally determined overall toxicity. In addition, the outputs from the developed models of zebrafish toxicity can be utilized as features to boost the prediction of developmental toxicity. The developed models are effective for predicting zebrafish toxicity and the proposed MTForestNet is expected to be useful for tasks with distinct chemical space that can be applied in other tasks. Scieific contribution A novel multitask learning algorithm MTForestNet was proposed to address the challenges of developing models using datasets with distinct chemical space that is a common issue of cheminformatics tasks. As an example, zebrafish toxicity prediction models were developed using the proposed MTForestNet which provide superior performance over conventional single-task and multitask learning methods. In addition, the developed zebrafish toxicity prediction models can reduce animal testing.

Abstract Background Limited data are available assessing vancomycin concentrations in obese critically ill patients. Currently, there are no studies evaluating dosing requirements in this population who receive vancomycin administered as a continuous infusion (CI). The aim of this study was to assess whether there was a difference in the weight-based maintenance dose required to reach a therapeutic vancomycin concentration at 24 hours when given as a CI in obese versus non-obese critically ill patients. Bismuth has recently attracted interest in connection with Na-ion battery anodes due to its high volumetric capacity. Density-functional-theory based first-principles calculations are playing a key role in understanding the fascinating electronic structure of Na 3 Bi and other topological materials. In particular, the strongly-constrained-and-appropriately-normed (SCAN) meta-generalized-gradient-approximation (meta-GGA) has shown significant improvement over the widely used generalized-gradient-approximation (GGA) scheme in capturing energetic, structural, and electronic properties of many classes of materials. Here, we discuss the electronic structure of Na 3 Bi within the SCAN framework and show that the resulting Fermi velocities and s-band shift around the Γ point are in better agreement with experiments than the corresponding GGA predictions. SCAN yields a purely spin-orbit-coupling (SOC) driven Dirac semimetal state in Na 3 Bi in contrast with the earlier GGA results. Our analysis reveals the presence of a topological phase transition from the Dirac semimetal to a trivial band insulator phase in Na 3 Bi x Sb 1 − x alloys as the strength of the SOC varies with Sb content, and gives insight into the role of the SOC in modulating conduction properties of Na 3 Bi.

Abstract The Weyl semimetal WTe2 and MoTe2 show great potential in generating large spin currents since they possess topologically protected spin‐polarized states and can carry a very large current density. In addition, the intrinsic non‐centrosymmetry of WTe2 and MoTe2 endows with a unique property of crystal symmetry‐controlled spin–orbit torques. An important question to be answered for developing spintronic devices is how spins relax in WTe2 and MoTe2. Here, a room‐temperature spin relaxation time of 1.2 ns (0.4 ns) in WTe2 (MoTe2) thin film using the time‐resolved Kerr rotation (TRKR) is reported. Based on ab initio calculation, a mechanism of long‐lived spin polarization resulting from a large spin splitting around the bottom of the conduction band, low electron–hole recombination rate, and suppression of backscattering required by time‐reversal and lattice symmetry operation is identified. In addition, it is found that the spin polarization is firmly pinned along the strong internal out‐of‐plane magnetic field induced by large spin splitting. This work provides an insight into the physical origin of long‐lived spin polarization in Weyl semimetals, which could be useful to manipulate spins for a long time at room temperature.

We tested the hypothesis that etomidate and ketamine produce residual effects that modify functional mobility (measured by the balance beam test) and adrenal function (adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation) immediately following recovery from loss of righting reflex in rats. Intravenous etomidate or ketamine was administered in a randomized, crossover fashion (2 or 4 mg/kg and 20 or 40 mg/kg, respectively) on eight consecutive days. Following recovery of righting reflex, animals were assessed for residual effects on functional mobility on the balance beam, motor behavior in the open field and adrenal function through ACTH stimulation. We evaluated the consequences of the effects of the anesthetic agent-induced motor behavior on functional mobility. On the balance beam, etomidate-treated rats maintained their grip longer than ketamine-treated rats, indicating greater balance abilities (mean ± SD, 21.5 ± 25.1 s vs. 3.0 ± 4.3 s respectively, p < 0.021). In the open field test, both dosages of etomidate and ketamine had opposite effects on travel behavior, showing ketamine-induced hyperlocomotion and etomidate-induced hypolocomotion. There was a significant interaction between anesthetic agent and motor behavior effects for functional mobility effects (p < 0.001). Corticosterone levels were lower after both 40 mg/kg ketamine and 4 mg/kg etomidate anesthesia compared to placebo, an effect stronger with etomidate than ketamine (p < 0.001). Following recovery from anesthesia, etomidate and ketamine have substantial side effects. Ketamine-induced hyperlocomotion with 20 and 40 mg/kg has stronger effects on functional mobility than etomidate-induced hypolocomotion with 2 and 4 mg/kg. Etomidate (4 mg/kg) has stronger adrenal suppression effects than ketamine (40 mg/kg).

Bismuth has been the key element in the discovery and development of topological insulator materials. Previous theoretical studies indicated that Bi is topologically trivial and it can transform into the topological phase by alloying with Sb. However, recent high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements strongly suggested a topological band structure in pure Bi, conflicting with the theoretical results. To address this issue, we studied the band structure of Bi and Sb films by ARPES and first-principles calculations. The quantum confinement effectively enlarges the energy gap in the band structure of Bi films and enables a direct visualization of the Z 2 topological invariant of Bi. We find that Bi quantum films in topologically trivial and nontrivial phases respond differently to surface perturbations. This way, we establish experimental criteria for detecting the band topology of Bi by spectroscopic methods.

This research attempted to explore, based on the broaden–and–build theory of positive emotions, the relationships among high school teachers’ savoring and instructional design imagination, and to verify the mediating effects of resilience and inspiration through action on the aforementioned relationships. Data were collected from 497 high school teachers in Taiwan. PLS-SEM was used to validate the research hypotheses. The results show that: (a) Savoring positively influences instructional design imagination; (b) Resilience has a complementary mediation effect on the relationship between savoring and instructional design imagination; (c) Inspiration through action has a complementary mediation effect on the relationship between savoring and instructional design imagination. Accordingly, this study bears important theoretical and practical implications for the professional development of teachers’ instructional design imagination.
