Litsea costalis is a well-known medicinal plant in tropical and subtropical areas. Four significant flavonoids were extracted and characterized from the plant leaf extract. One component was discovered for the first time in flavonoid chemistry, flavan-4-ol, (3′, 4′-methylenedioxy-5,7-dimethoxy chroman-4-ol). Three flavonoids were discovered for the first time in this plant. The detected products are (+)-pinostrobin, (+)-onysilin, and (+)-pinocembrin. The fourth component was characterized for the first time in this plant and introduced in flavonoid chemistry. The extracted component antioxidant activity against DPPH indicated an IC50 value of around 30 µg/mL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Modification of acid-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)-COOH with Fe3O4-CaO nanoparticles using FeSO4 and eggshell, produced an efficient magnetic catalyst for the synthesis of some C-glycosides. The condensation of dimedone with unprotected sugars in ethanol in the presence of a catalytic amount of (MWCNTs)-COOH/Fe3O4-CaO gave 3,4,5,6,7,9-hexahydro-1H-xanthene-1,8 (2H)-dione derivatives in good yields. The products were identified by CHN analysis, NMR, and FTIR spectra. Conversely, synthesis of Fe3O4-CaO nanoparticles and their conjugation on the surface of (MWCNTs)-COOH have been confirmed by FTIR, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Euparin (1) as a natural product was derivatized by maleic anhydride (2), semicarbazide (3), phenylacetic acid (4 and 5), and thiosemicarbazide (6) and their activities were evaluated in silico by molecular docking studies to investigate the binding affinities and interaction modes between the samples and N-myristoyltransferase enzyme. Among the tested samples (1–6), compounds 1–3 showed significant hydrophobic and hydrogen bonding interactions with the important residues at the active site of the receptor. Therefore, the biological properties of compounds 1–3 were investigated in this work. The antifungal activity of compounds 1–3 was tested against Candida albicans. Amongst them, euparin 1 with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 7.81 µg/mL and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of 15.62 µg/mL exhibited the highest antifungal activity. Furthermore, antibacterial activities were studied against two Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis), and two Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) bacteria, the highest zone of growth on B. subtilis for compound 3 was 13.5 ± 0.7 mm, while for compound 2, the zone of growth inhibition against B. subtilis and S. aureus was 10.0 ± 1.4 and 9.5 ± 0.70 mm, respectively. Finally, the anticancer effects of 1– 3 were examined using MTT assay against MDA-MB-231 and A-549 cell lines. Compound 2 displayed cytotoxicity on MDA-MB-231 cell line with IC50 of 166 µg/mL. A simple three-components reaction between alkynes, primary amines, and isothiocyanates in the presence of nanophase ZnO catalysts in aqueous medium at room temperature is reported which produced 1,3-thiazolidine derivatives in good yields. The title compound, C(16)H(14)O(5), is a triclinic polymorph of a previously reported monoclinic structure [Hosseinzadeh et al. (2011 ▶). Acta Cryst. E67, o1544]. The mol-ecule is roughly planar, the r.m.s. deviation from the least-squares plane of all non-H atoms being 0.092 Å. In the crystal, adjacent mol-ecules are linked through C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds into an infinite two-dimensional network parallel to (011). The layers are further connected via C-H⋯π inter-actions, forming a three-dimensional structure. Intra-molecular O-H⋯O and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds are also observed.

In the mol-ecule of the title compound, C(16)H(14)O(5), all non-H atoms are approximately co-planar [maximum atomic deviation = 0.064 (5) Å]. The hy-droxy group is a hydrogen-bond donor to a carbonyl O atom. Weak intermolecular C-H⋯O hydrogen bonding is present in the crystal structure. The crystal structure is 'whole-mol-ecule disordered' about an axis that runs approximately along the length of the mol-ecule; the occupancy of the two disorder components was set as exactly 0.5. An intra-molecular O--H⋯O hydrogen bond exists in each component.
