Slope failures and slope slides of expansive soils are usually characterized by shallow sliding along the surface crack. Soilbag is an effective method to prevent and control slope failures and slope slides of expansive soil. Currently, soilbag protection for expansive soil slopes has been commonly designed using empirical methods, which led to many failures of soilbag-protected slopes, or high-cost. In this paper, a new design method of the soilbag-protected slopes in expansive soils is proposed based on the balance between the soilbag friction and the active lateral earth pressure induced by the swelling pressure of expansive soils. Specifically, the friction between the soilbags is assumed to be in direct proportion to the soilbag heap-up height. The active lateral earth pressure acted on a layer of soilbag is calculated along with the total height of the slope. Moreover, the width of soilbag layers is calculated from the balance of the sum of soilbag friction and the total active lateral earth pressure along with the soilbag height and expressed by the height of slopes. For the convenience of soilbag construction, the heap-up unit of soilbags is proposed for different slope heights of expansive soils.

The vegetation cover is the main part of the human transformation of nature, and it is also the main reflection of human activities. Shandong Province is in the stage of rapid development at present, rapid economic growth and extensive development model makes the land use and vegetation cover has undergone profound changes in Shandong Province. Therefore, the study of vegetation cover change has great significance to the province. Based on the MODI S NDVI data with 1km resolution, the vegetation cover changes of Shandong Province from 2002 to 2011were analyzed in this paper supporting by the ENVI technology. The results showed that NDVI values in 2002 were mainly distributed in the 0.4-0.6 range, accounting for 62%, while NDVI values of the other years were mainly distributed in the 0.6-0.8 range, the proportion of them were over 50% except 2002. The results also showed that there are some differences in the composition of each interval in 2003 to 2011. Drought, fixed assets investment and crop planting area may be the main reasons for vegetation coverage changes of Shandong Province.

The paper has analyzed the mechanical mechanism of movement and deformation of overlying strata and surface on stope, defined the moving structures of the overlying strata of three strata space forms, explored the mechanism of surface subsidence caused by loose layers’ pressure consolidation , and pointed out that when the loose layers are much thicker, what is indispensable is that, the pressure consolidation of loose layers loosed water, or soil body’s deformation leading to additional stress in the mining soil body, and the dissipation of excess pore water pressure resulting in the consolidation. And according to the surface subsiding features of thick loose layers in mining area, the paper has applied the correction model by probability integral method to predict subsidence with a rather satisfying prediction result.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with the inflammatory response in response to amyloid β-peptide (Aβ). Previous studies have suggested that paeoniflorin (PF) shows anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects in inflammation-related diseases. However, the impacts of PF on AD have not been investigated. In the present study, we showed that a 4-week treatment with PF could significantly inhibit Aβ burden, Aβ-induced over activation of astrocytes and microglia, downregulation of proinflammatory cytokines, and upregulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines in the brain. In addition, we demonstrated that chronic treatment with PF inhibited the activation of glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK-3β) and reversed neuroinflammtory-induced activation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathways. Moreover, PF exerted inhibitory effects on NALP3 inflammasome, caspase-1, and IL-1β. Collectively, in the present study, we demonstrated that PF exhibits neuroprotective effects in amyloid precursor protein (APP) and presenilin 1 (PS1) double-transgenic (APP/PS1) mice via inhibiting neuroinflammation mediated by the GSK-3β and NF-κB signaling pathways and nucleotide-binding domain-like receptor protein 3 inflammasome. Thus, these results suggest that PF might be useful to intervene in development or progression of neurodegeneration in AD through its anti-inflammatory and anti-amyloidogenic effects.

Studies have demonstrated that brain oedema formation following spontaneous intracerebral haemorrhage is associated with substances derived from blood clots or blood components. However, these studies did not completely reveal the role of blood components in brain oedema formation following traumatic intracerebral haemorrhage (TICH). Here, we explore the role of erythrocytes in brain oedema development by studying the effect of erythrocytes on brain water content (BWC) and expression of haem oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in rats with TICH. A total of 120 Sprague–Dawley rats were randomly divided into four experimental treatment groups: traumatic brain injury (TBI), TBI plus whole blood (WB), TBI plus lysed red blood cells (RBCs; LRBC) and TBI plus packed RBCs (PRBC). Following TBI, which was established by applying a free-falling device, WB, LRBC or PRBC were infused with stereotactic guidance into the injured cortex to produce a model of TICH. All rats were killed at 1, 3 or 5 days after TBI or TICH. BWC was measured, and immunohistochemistry for HO-1 was performed. In the WB, PRBC and TBI groups, BWC at 3 days post-TBI or post-TICH was the greatest. However, BWC in the LRBC group at 1 day was markedly higher than that at 3 and 5 days. Comparisons among the four groups showed that BWC in the LRBC group was the highest at 1 day, and the highest at 3 days in the WB and PRBC groups; there was no significant difference at 5 days. Positive expression of HO-1 in the WB, PRBC and LRBC groups coincided with changes in BWC. Our results indicate that erythrocytes play an important role in delayed brain oedema formation (3 days post-injury) following TICH, but have no significant influence on brain oedema at early stages (1 day post-injury), and that the mechanisms of delayed brain oedema involve RBC breakdown products.
