To explore the clinical application of lockedge suspension combined with three steel wires vertical fixation in comminuted fracture of inferior pole of patella.From August 2016 to May 2019, 23 patients with comminuted fracture of the lower pole of the patella, including 14 males and 9 females, were treated with lockedge suspension combined with three steel wires vertical fixation. The age ranged from 34 to 68 (55.0±1.2) years. One year after operation, the pain and function were evaluated by pain visual analogue scale(VAS) and knee flexion and extension range of motion, and the clinical efficacy was evaluated by Lysholm knee score standard.All 23 patients were followed up for 12 to 14, with a mean of(13.0±0.5) months. One patient had skin irritation by the tail of the steel wire, and the rest had no postoperative complications such as incision infection, internal fixation loosening and fracture displacement. The fractures of 23 patients were healed, and the healing time was 10 to 14 weeks with a mean of(12.0±1.1) weeks. The VAS score decreased from 7.96±0.93 before operation to 0.83±0.65 one year after operation. The range of knee flexion and extension activities increased from(20.30±8.69) ° before operation to 1 year after operation(127.39±6.55) °. Lysholm knee score increased from 18.48±4.00 before operation to 96.09±4.91 one year after operation(The treatment of comminuted fracture of the lower pole of patella by lockedge suspension combined with three steel wires vertical fixation has reliable fixation and high fracture healing rate. It can meet the requirements of rapid rehabilitation and functional exercise, and the early clinical effect is satisfactory.

A novel insertable and pseudocapacitive Li+ ion material for highly ordered layered montmorillonite/carbon is explored in the present study. The commercially available protonated montmorillonite and 3,3′-diaminobenzidine act as starting materials to synthesize the layered material via hydrothermal intercalation, oxidative polymerization and carbonization. This method of preparing montmorillonite/carbon nanocomposite exhibits several advantages. To be specific, raw materials are low cost and naturally abundant; the montmorillonite can undergo proton exchange easily to form a permutable proton-type material, and the protons in the layered nanocomposite can be directly substituted by the polymerizable molecules (e.g., 3,3′-diaminobenzidine). Accordingly, a sheet-like montmorillonite/carbon layered nanocomposite is achieved with the carbon stacking on the montmorillonite substrate for the intercalation behavior. As revealed from the electrochemical results, montmorillonite/carbon nanocomposite can deliver a high reversible capacity of 1432 mA h g−1 at 50 mA g−1 and superior rate capacity of 920 mA h g−1 at 10 000 mA g−1 for the lithium ion battery. Furthermore, the full cell with LiFePO4 as cathode and montmorillonite/carbon as anode maintains 94% capacity retention over 50 cycles as well as high coulombic efficiency.

In order to enhance the Pd based anodic catalysts for direct formic acid fuel cells (DFAFCs), the research work includes increasing catalyst activity and preventing CO poison. In this study, various zirconium oxides-modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared as the supports of Pd catalysts for DFAFCs by adjusting the preparation parameters: metal adding, sintering temperature and atmospheres. The prepared pure zirconia has both monoclinic and tetragonal phases. The addition of MWCNTs depresses the growth of monoclinic phase. A small amount of Pd adding allows both monoclinic and tetragonal zirconia structures to appear again. Pd nanoparticles of 20 wt% synthesized on MWCNTs and tetragonal ZrO2/MWCNTs have similar particle size, while Pd/[Pd:ZrO2/AO-MWCNTs-300Air-900Ar] have more nanoparticles aggregation. The electrochemical surface area can be improved by adding zirconia which implies those zirconia modified Pd catalysts better electrocatalytic performance. By analyzing the maximum current density and the corresponding potential, Pd/AO-MWCNTs are inferred to undergo the formic acid direct oxidation initially. The Pd catalysts modified by tetragonal ZrO2 have higher current density. Those having both tetragonal and monoclinic ZrO2 modified Pd catalysts have lower potential of formic acid oxidation. All the Pd based catalysts with zirconia modification possess better CO resist ability and electrocatalytic activity. Pd/[ZrO2/AO-MWCNTs-300Air-900Ar] and Pd/[Pd:ZrO2/AO-MWCNTs-300Air-900Ar] which catalyze formic acid in direct oxidation path are the two best catalysts.

To explore clinical effect of arthroscopic meniscus tear strapping suture by rotator cuff suture threader.Forty patients with meniscus tear injury admitted from July 2015 to May 2019, including 27 males and 13 females, aged from 20 to 55 years old with an average of (36.0±1.4) years old. Menisci laceration was sutured with rotator cuff suture thread under arthroscopy. Postoperative complication was observed, Lysholm knee joint score before and after operation at 12 months were used to evaluate clinical effects, visual analogue scale (VAS) and range of knee flexion and extension were applied to evaluate recovery of pain and function.All patients were followed up from 12 to 15 months with an average of (12.6±0.7) months.No complication such as joint effusion, suture failure occurred. Two patients occurred mild pain after activity without clinical physical abnormality, and 1 patient manifested moderate pain with joint space tenderness, the other rest without abnormal. Lysholm knee joint score was increased from (49.55±1.21) preoperatively to (98.95±0.42) at 12 months after operation, VAS score decreased from (5.18±0.78)preoperatively to (1.03±0.77) at 12 months after operation, and range of knee joint flexion and extension activity increased from (50.63±9.20)°preoperatively to (130.38±4.99)°after operation, and there were statistical differences in Lysholm knee joint score, VAS and range of knee joint flexion and extension activity (Arthroscopic strapping suture by rotator cuff suture threading device applies to most meniscus injuries, including medial meniscus posterior horn tears, lateral meniscus body tears and lateral meniscus posterior horn tears. This technique meets the need of full-internal meniscus suture without specialmeniscus suture, and has advantages of convenient operation, less complications and good postoperative function.

BackgroundThe pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become the first concern in international affairs as the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) is spreading all over the world at a terrific speed. The accuracy of early diagnosis is critical in the control of the spread of the virus. Although the real-time RT-PCR detection of the virus nucleic acid is the current golden diagnostic standard, it has high false negative rate when only apply single test.ObjectiveSummarize the baseline characteristics and laboratory examination results of hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Analyze the factors that could interfere with the early diagnosis quantitatively to support the timely confirmation of the disease.MethodsAll suspected patients with COVID-19 were included in our study until Feb 9th, 2020. The last day of follow-up was Mar 20th, 2020. Throat swab real-time RT-PCR test was used to confirm SARS-CoV-2 infection. The difference between the epidemiological profile and first laboratory examination results of COVID-19 patients and non-COVID-19 patients were compared and analyzed by multiple logistic regression. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and area under curve (AUC) were used to assess the potential diagnostic value in factors, which had statistical differences in regression analysis.ResultsIn total, 315 hospitalized patients were included. Among them, 108 were confirmed as COVID-19 patients and 207 were non-COVID-19 patients. Two groups of patients have significance in comparing age, contact history, leukocyte count, lymphocyte count, C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (p9/L, with a diagnostic sensitivity of 0.82 (95% CI 0.73-0.88) and a specificity of 0.50 (95% CI 0.43-0.57). Positive and negative likelihood ratios were 1.64 and 0.37, respectively.ConclusionSingle RT-PCR test has relatively high false negative rate. When first RT-PCR test show negative result in suspected patients, the chest CT scan, contact history, age and lymphocyte count should be used combinedly to assess the possibility of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

The main objective of this work is to study the influence of thermal oxidation on the chemical composition and magnetic properties of iron nanoparticles which were manufactured in a simple chemical reduction of Fe3+ ions coming from iron salt with sodium borohydride. The annealing processing was performed in an argon atmosphere containing the traces of oxygen to avoid spontaneous oxidation of iron at temperatures ranging from 200 °C to 800 °C. The chemical composition and magnetic properties of as-prepared and thermally-treated nanoparticles were determined by means of X-ray diffractometry, Raman spectroscopy, Mossbauer spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometry. Due to the magnetic interactions, the investigated iron nanoparticles tended to create the dense aggregates which were difficult to split even at low temperatures. This caused that there was no empty space between them, which led to their partial sintering at elevated temperatures. These features hindered their precise morphological observations using the electron microscopy techniques. The obtained results show that the annealing process up to 800 °C resulted in a progressive change in the chemical composition of as-prepared iron nanoparticles which was associated with their oxidation. As a consequence, their magnetic properties also depended on the annealing temperature. For instance, considering the values of saturation magnetization, its highest value was recorded for the as-prepared nanoparticles at 1 T and it equals 149 emu/g, while the saturation point for nanoparticles treated at 600 °C and higher temperatures was not reached even at the magnetic field of about 5 T. Moreover, a significant enhancement of coercivity was observed for the iron nanoparticles annealed over 600 °C.

The development of efficient heterogeneous Fenton catalysts is mainly by “trial-and-error” concept and the factor determining H2O2 activation remains elusive. In this work, we demonstrate that suitable facet exposure to elongate O–O bond in H2O2 is the key parameter determining the Fenton catalyst’s activity. CuFeO2 nanocubes and nanoplates with different surface facets of {110} and {012} are used to compare the effect of exposed facets on Fenton activity. The results indicate that ofloxacin (OFX) degradation rate by CuFeO2 {012} is four times faster than that of CuFeO2 {110} (0.0408 vs 0.0101 min–1). In CuFeO2 {012}-H2O2 system, OFX is completely removed at a pH range 3.2–10.1. The experimental results and theoretical simulations show that •OH is preferentially formed from the reduction of absorbed H2O2 by electron from CuFeO2 {012} due to suitable elongation of O–O (1.472 A) bond length in H2O2. Pigments from red coral (Corallium rubrum) and African snail (Helixia aspersa) shell were studied non-invasively using Raman spectroscopy with 1064-nm laser beam. The two observed bands because of organic pigments confined in biomineralized CaCO3 matrix at about 1500 and 1100 cm−1 were assigned to ν(CC) and ν(C―C), respectively. Both signals originate from polyene(s) of largely unknown structure, containing several conjugated CC bonds. The small peak at 1016 cm−1 in the Raman spectrum of coral pigment was assigned to in-plane ―CH3 rocking or structural deformation of polyene chain because of spatial confinement in the mineral matrix. The organic pigments in red coral and snail shell were present in inorganic matrix containing aragonite (shell) and calcite (coral). In addition, using Raman spectroscopy, it was observed that aragonite was replaced by calcite as result of healing damaged parts of snail shell. This is an important finding which indicates a great potential of nondestructive Raman spectroscopy instead of X-ray technique, as a diagnostic tool in environmental studies. To support analysis of the observed Raman spectra detailed calculations using density functional theory (DFT with B3LYP and BLYP density functionals) on structure and vibrations of model all-trans polyenes were undertaken. DFT calculated CC and C―C stretching frequencies for all-trans polyenes containing from 2 to 14 CC units were compared with the observed ν(CC) and ν(C―C) band positions of the studied coral and shell. Individual correction factors were used to better match theoretical wavenumbers with observed band positions in red coral and African snail. It was concluded that all-trans polyene pigments of red coral and dark parts of African snail shell contain 11–12 and 14 CC double bond units, respectively. However, Raman spectroscopy cannot produce any clear information on the presence and nature of the end-chain substituents in the studied pigments. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

This work describes an oxidation process of iron-iron oxide core-shell nanowires at temperatures between 100 °C and 800 °C. The studied nanomaterial was synthesized through a simple chemical reduction of iron trichloride in an external magnetic field under a constant flow of argon. The electron microscopy investigations allowed determining that the as-prepared nanowires were composed of self-assembled iron nanoparticles which were covered by a 3 nm thick oxide shell and separated from each other by a thin interface layer. Both these layers exhibited an amorphous or highly-disordered character which was traced by means of transmission electron microscopy and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The thermal oxidation was carried out under a constant flow of argon which contained the traces of oxygen. The first stage of process was related to slow transformations of amorphous Fe and amorphous iron oxides into crystalline phases and disappearance of interfaces between iron nanoparticles forming the studied nanomaterial (range: 25-300 °C). After that, the crystalline iron core and iron oxide shell became oxidized and signals for different compositions of iron oxide sheath were observed (range: 300-800 °C) using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and Mössbauer spectroscopy. According to the thermal gravimetric analysis, the nanowires heated up to 800 °C under argon atmosphere gained 37% of mass with respect to their initial weight. The structure of the studied nanomaterial oxidized at 800 °C was mainly composed of α-Fe2O3 (∼ 93%). Moreover, iron nanowires treated above 600 °C lost their wire-like shape due to their shrinkage and collapse caused by the void coalescence.

An efficient strategy for enhancing iron efficiency in heterogeneous Fenton reaction via the pyrolysis of ferrocene chemically modified sepiolite (Sep) was proposed in this study. Highly dispersed FeC6 on sepiolite (Fe-Dis@Sep) was synthesized as an efficient photo-Fenton catalyst for the visible light degradation of ofloxacin (OFX). It exhibits an excellent Fenton activity and stability towards OFX degradation. The pseudo-first order reaction rate constant of Fe-Dis@Sep was 5.1-fold higher than that of the supported catalyst with aggregated iron oxides prepared by traditional impregnation method (Fe-Agg@Sep). Based on TEM images and density functional theory (DFT) calculation, the enhanced Fenton activity of Fe-Dis@Sep was attributed to the unique incorporation of FeC6 on Sep via Si-O-C-Fe bond which not only favor the high dispersion of FeC6 with an electron deficiency but also promote Fe(III) to Fe(II) cycle via the formation of surface Fe-H2O2 complex. OH and O2- were identified as active species for OFX degradation in Fe-Dis@Sep-H2O2-Vis system. 98.7% of F and 97.0% of N in OFX was converted into F− and NO3− with a TOC removal efficiency of 89.35%. The possible degradation pathway of OFX was also proposed according to HPLC-MS results. Finally, the Fenton reaction mechanism over Fe-Dis@Sep was discussed.

In this study, the highly dispersed β-FeOOH on palygorskite (H-β-FeOOH/PAL) was prepared and investigated as Fenton catalyst for H2O2 activation towards metronidazole (MTZ). Based on electron spin resonance and probe techniques, hydroxyl radicles (•OH) as main reactive oxygen species was confirmed, and much more •OH were generated over H-β-FeOOH/PAL than T-β-FeOOH/PAL using traditional impregnation method. The enhanced Fe(III) to Fe(II) cycle due to the highly dispersed β-FeOOH leads to the fast degradation of metronidazole over H-β-FeOOH/PAL. 92.8% of MTZ degradation efficiency was achieved within 180 min by adding 17 mmol/L H2O2 and 40 mg/L of H-β-FeOOH/PAL at pH 6.0. The bacterial cytotoxicity during MTZ degradation process also decreased with reaction time and achieved zero at 66 min, indicating MTZ was not only efficiently degraded but also safely transformed. Besides, the possible MTZ degradation pathway was further proposed based on the intermediates identified by HPLC-MS.

To explore the clinical effect of modified Metaizeau's technique for radial neck fractures of Judet II or IV in children, summarizing the value of clinical application.From May 2014 to March 2017, 32 children of Judet III or IV radial neck fractures were treated with percutaneous Kirschner wire poking reduction and closed reduction with elastic intramedullary nailing fixation, including 21 boys and 11 girls, aged from 5.7 to 10.6 years old with a mean of 7.2 years old. The modified An-Morrey functional rating index were used to evaluate elbow range of motion, myodynamia, stability, and pain preoperatively and 1 year postoperatively in all the patients.All patients were available for an average follow-up from 12 to 15 months. No complications such as incision infection, wire or nail tail irritation and avascular necrosis of radial head and epiphyses was occurred. The fracture achieved solid healing at 8 to 10 weeks after operation. The modified An and Morrey functional score improved from 58.69±5.80 before operation to 99.13±1.79 at 1 year after operation, there was obvious difference of scores between preoperative and postoperative at 1 year.Modified Metaizeau's technique is a reliable and good treatment for Judet III or IV radial neck fractures in children, which has advantages of few complication, minimal invasion, quick fracture union and good recovery of elbow joint.

The performance of Pd electrocatalysts for formic acid electrooxidation was improved by application of metal oxide-multiwall carbon nanotubes composites as a catalyst support. Hybrid oxides/MWCNTs were synthesized by two different methods: chemical reduction method and impregnation method. Pd based catalysts were synthesized by polyol method on the MWCNTs or oxide/MWCNTs composites. The In2O3 was deposited on MWCNTs by impregnation method (In2O3/MWCNTs-IM support) and in the presence of NaBH4 (In2O3/MWCNTs-NaBH4 support). The physical properties of the Pd/In2O3/MWCNTs-IM, Pd/In2O3/MWCNTs-NaBH4, Pd/SnO2/MWCNTs, and Pd/MWCNTs catalysts were characterized and their electrocatalytical performance in formic acid oxidation was compared. During Pd deposition on In2O3/MWCNTs-NaBH4 support, InPd2 structure was formed as observed by XRD. The electrochemical tests indicate that the two Pd/ In2O3/MWCNTs electrocatalysts have higher electrocatalytic activity than those of Pd/SnO2/MWCNTs and Pd/MWCNTs. The best performance was observed for the catalyst obtained by In2O3 impregnation of MWCNTs denoted by Pd/In2O3/MWCNTs-IM.

The main goal of this work is to study the structural and magnetic properties of iron nanowires and iron nanoparticles, which have been fabricated in almost the same processes. The only difference in the synthesis is an application of an external magnetic field in order to form the iron nanowires. Both nanomaterials have been examined by means of transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, X-ray diffractometry and Mössbauer spectrometry to determine their structures. Structural investigations confirm that obtained iron nanowires as well as nanoparticles reveal core–shell structures and they are composed of crystalline iron cores that are covered by amorphous or highly defected phases of iron and iron oxides. Magnetic properties have been measured using a vibrating sample magnetometer. The obtained values of coercivity, remanent magnetization, saturation magnetization as well as Curie temperature differ for both studied nanostructures. Higher values of magnetizations are observed for iron nanowires. At the same time, coercivity and Curie temperature are higher for iron nanoparticles.

Raman spectroscopy as well as Mössbauer spectroscopy were applied in order to study the phase composition of iron nanowires and its changes, caused by annealing in a neutral atmosphere at several temperatures ranging from 200°C to 800°C. As-prepared nanowires were manufactured via a simple chemical reduction in an external magnetic field. Both experimental techniques proved formation of the surface layer covered by crystalline iron oxides, with phase composition dependent on the annealing temperature (T a). At higher T a, hematite was the dominant phase in the nanowires.

Although pressure therapy (PT) represents the standard care for prevention and treatment of hypertrophic scar (HS) from burns, its practice is largely based on empirical evidence and its effectiveness remains controversial. To clarify the effect of PT (15–25 mmHg) for HS, we performed the systematic review and meta-analysis. Several electronic databases were screened to identify related randomized controlled trials (RCTs). 12 RCTs involving 710 patients with 761 HS resulting from burn injuries were included. Compared with non/low-PT, cases treated with PT (15–25 mmHg) showed significant differences in Vancouver Scar Scale score (MD = −0.58, 95% CI = −0.78–−0.37), thickness (SMD = −0.25, 95% CI = −0.40–−0.11), brightness (MD = 2.00, 95% CI = 0.59–3.42), redness (MD = −0.79, 95% CI = −1.52–−0.07), pigmentation (MD = −0.16, 95% CI = −0.32–−0.00) and hardness (SMD = −0.65, 95% CI = −1.07–−0.23). However, there was no difference in vascularity (MD = 0.03, 95% CI = −0.43–0.48). Our analysis indicated that patients with HS who were managed with PT (15–25 mmHg) showed significant improvements. Due to limitations, more large and well-designed studies are needed to confirm our findings and the side-effects of the PT may also need to be evaluated.

This study synthesizes the multilayered magnet c nanowires (NWs) with biocompatible interface by means of the chemical reducing, sol-gel, chemical polymerization, and photochemical reducing. These functionalized iron na owires including; Au/Fe NWs, Au/SiO 2 /Fe NWs, and Au/PDDA/SiO 2 /Fe NWs etc. The properties of these nanowires are characterized by XRD, FE-SEM, and ICP to investigate their structures, morphologies, and micro chemical characteristics.

This research discusses the influence of morphology of nanomagnetic materials (one-dimensional iron nanowires and zero-dimensional iron nanoparticles) on heating efficiency of the hyperthermia treatment. One-dimensional iron nanowires, synthesized by reducing method in external magnetic field, are explored in terms of their material properties, magnetic anisotropy, and cytotoxicity of EMT-6 cells. The magnetic anisotropy of an array of nanowires is examined in parallel and perpendicular magnetic fields by VSM. For the magnetic hyperthermia treatment tests, iron nanowires and nanoparticles with different concentrations are heated in alternating magnetic field to measure their actual heating efficiency and SLP heating properties. The shape effects of iron nanomaterials can be revealed from their heating properties. The cytotoxicity of nanowires with different concentrations is measured by its survival rate in EMT-6 with the cells cultivated for 6 and 24 hours.

The iron nanowires can be fabricated via the process in which sodium borohydride reduces iron salts in external magnetic field. The iron nanowires are found to be covered by passivated layers of iron oxide which prevent the oxidation of iron nanowires. In this process, the boron will include in iron nanowires. The average length and diameter of iron nanowires is around 1.2 micrometers and 60 nanometers, respectively. According to ICP results, the contents of B and Fe are about 1.98 wt% and 87.04 wt%, respectively, in iron nanowires. A wide variety of equipment is used to investigate the morphological, microchemical, and structural characteristics of the newly synthesized iron nanowires ––– e.g., XRD, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, VSM and XANES. XANES analysis indicates the boron in iron nanowires exists in the form of B2O3. The saturation magnetization and the coercive force of iron nanowires are 157.93 emu/g and 9.74 Oe, respectively. In-situ images of synthesized iron nanowires during reduction process in magnetic field are observed by NSRRC transmission X-ray microscope. Thus, this study develop a novel process to produce iron nanowires with large quantitates and can control its length and diameter by various the concentration of precursors for various applications.

To search for more efficient and inexpensive electrocatalysts is one of the main research directions for the electrocatalytic application of direct liquid fuel cells. Nanohybrid Pt/NiO/MWCNTs are synthesized by impregnation and polyol methods. Two different series denoted as Pt/[NiO/MWCNTs (1:4)] and NiO/[Pt/MWCNTs (1:4)] are prepared. The sizes of the nanoparticles are 3-7 nm and 10 nm for Pt and NiO, respectively. By observing the morphology images, NiO will aggregate more on Pt modified MWCNTs than those without Pt adding. The catalytic properties of these hybrid catalysts are characterized by methanol electro-oxidation. The addition of 20 wt% NiO, before or after Pt synthesis, can better enhance the catalysis ability of Pt and help Pt catalyst convert CO in lower temperature. This study indicates the 10 wt% Pt/[NiO/MWCNTs (1:4)] catalyst has the best performance in electrocatalytic activity for methanol. The NiO is a cheaper material than other commonly used oxides; the novel hybrid catalysts are a promised candidate for the electrocatalytic application in DMFCs.

The microstructure and magnetic properties of multilayer [Os(t)/FePt(x)]n films on a glass substrate with a 10 nm Os buffer layer by ion beam sputtering have been studied as a function of the annealing temperatures between 300 and 800 degrees C. Here, t = 0.2, 1 or 5 nm and x varied from 10, 20, 25, 50, to 100 nm with its associated n value of 10, 5, 4, 2, and 1, respectively. No diffusion evidence was found in samples with a thin Os layer and t > or = 1 nm. The average grain size of the multilayer films can be well controlled by both annealing temperature and thickness of the FePt layer by a very thin Os space layer with t > or = 1 nm. The enhancement of H(c) can be understood from the fact that for a FePt film with an Os spacer layers, the increasing number of Os layer will inhibit the grain growth of FePt grains and enriches the grain boundary. We have experimentally demonstrated that even with a very thin 1 nm Os spacer layers, the [Os(t)/FePt(x)]n multilayer films can exhibit good hard magnetic properties and are attractive candidates for ultrahigh density magnetic recording media.

Improving catalyst performance by studying the preparation parameters, material structures and analysis methods is important work for catalyst researchers. In this study, Cu–Pt nanocomposites with different metal ratios were synthesized on MWCNTs using a polyol method. The structures and morphologies of the nano hybrid catalysts were analyzed by XRD and TEM. The XRD results indicate that Pt and Cu formed a bimetallic solid solution. The average diameters of the Pt and Cu–Pt nanoparticles on MWCNTs were between 3–10 nm and 5–15 nm, respectively. The electrocatalytic behavior of methanol oxidation reactions was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV). Cu(20%)/[Pt/MWCNTs(1:4)], which contained an optimal degree of solid solution, enhanced the methanol oxidation to the greatest degree.

Room-temperature-deposited FePt thin films with thickness (t) ranged from 5 to 100 nm treated by rapid-thermal annealing (RTA) were studied. With annealing condition of 900°C for 60 seconds at heating rate of 80° C/sec., a metastable phase of FePt was observed in the films with t ≥ 40 nm. The phase is chemically ordered with a face-centered-cubic (fcc) structure. The lattice parameter of it is found identical to the planar spacing of L10 (100). The metastable structure is dominant in the film with t = 40 nm and gradually replaced by L10 phase with increasing t. The fcc phase is soft magnetic with saturation magnetization similar to that of disordered FePt. Drastic changes were also observed in surface morphology. The results infer the connection between the metastable transformation and internal strain. The formation of the fcc structure is sensitive to processing parameters except t . Slower heating rate, lower annealing temperature, and longer annealing time, tend to suppress the formation of it. The interesting findings provide additional knowledge for FePt thin films.

Development of (001) texture in FePt thin films deposited on glass substrates with different thickness (t) treated by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) is studied. A critical thickness of 30 nm is characterized: below which the (001) preferred orientation of the films develops with increasing t ; when t >; 30 , the films become isotropic. Remarkable perpendicular anisotropy in magnetic properties is achieved in the 30 nm thick sample with the best (001) texture. Discontinuous changes are also observed in surface morphology, microstructure, magnetic domain structure, and internal stress. Direct evidences are presented relating the formation of (001) texture to abnormal grain growth. The internal stress/strain analysis indicates that the residual tensile (σ) stress is proportional to the degree of (001) preferred orientation. A large value of σ of about 8.9 GPa is obtained in the film with t = 30, suggesting the driving force forming the texture.

Sn/Ni–8.0 at.%V (Ni–7.0 wt%V) couples are prepared and the interfacial reactions at 210 and 250 °C are examined. In the early stage of reaction at 250 °C, a T phase is formed as a result of fast diffusion of Sn into the Ni–8.0 at.%V substrate. With a longer reaction, the outer region of the T phase transforms to a Ni-depletion layer, which has not been observed previously. Both the T phase and the Ni-depletion layer are analyzed using transmission electronic microscopy. This newly found Ni-depletion layer is composed of Sn and nanosize “VSn2(V2Sn3)” particulates. The solid/solid reaction paths in the Sn/Ni–8.0 at.%V couples evolve from Sn/T/Ni–V, Sn/Ni3Sn4/T/Ni–V to Sn/Ni3Sn4/VSn2(V2Sn3). During the liquid/solid reactions, the paths are liquid/T/Ni–V, liquid/liquid + Ni3Sn4/T/Ni–V, liquid/liquid + Ni3Sn4/liquid + VSn2(V2Sn3)/T/Ni–V, and liquid/liquid + Ni3Sn4/liquid + VSn2(V2Sn3).

The hybrid nanomaterials of platinum/cerium oxide/multi-walled carbon nanotubes ( Pt/CeO2 /MWCNTs) are synthesized successfully via impregnation and polyol processes. MWCNTs serve as an excellent supporter where CeO2 nanoparticles are decorated with well-distributed Pt nanoparticles. Images show the average particle size of crystalline Pt and CeO2 on MWCNTs are 3–7 and 20–30 nm, respectively. In electrochemical reaction, the redox peak of Pt/CeO2 -700°C/MWCNTs reveals lower potential and higher current density in methanol electro-oxidation than those of other Pt -based ones. The study indicates that the cerium oxide in Pt/CeO2 -700°C/MWCNTs catalyst will enhance significantly the oxygen ions transportation between the interface of Pt and MWCNTs to eliminate the CO poison effect on Pt catalyst.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) supported Pd–Au nanoparticles for electrooxidation of formic acid (FA) are prepared and compared with Pd/MWCNTs in this study. The nanocatalysts are prepared by a polyol method, and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TGA), SEM, and field emission transmission electron microscope (FE-TEM). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) is used to examine the catalytic activity towards FA electrooxidation. Controlling the contents of the precursors (PdCl2 and HAuCl4·4H2O), the different weight ratios of Pd–Au can be synthesized to form the various solid solution structures of Pd–Au. TEM image results indicate the average diameter of Pd–Au solid solution particles is about 10–30 nm. The results of electrochemical analysis show that the Au (10 wt.%)/[Pd/MWCNTs (1:9)](90 wt.%) hybrid catalysts exhibit the highest catalytic activity and better stability than that of Pd/MWCNTs in FA electrooxidation. The promoting of Pd-based catalyst with Au to form solid solution improves the performance of the catalyst in FA electrooxidation. The newly synthesized electrocatalyst is promising for application in direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC).

The spatial distribution of X-ray synthesized, PEG coated Au nanoparticles in cancer-bearing mice and their time dependent accumulation were investigated with inductive coupled plasma – optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and histological imaging. The results conclusively demonstrate that the particles strongly accumulate in tumor regions; up to ∼25 times more than in normal muscle tissue. This accumulation increases with the time after injection for up to ∼12 h in tumor, spleen and liver tissues, whereas for most non-tumor regions it saturates or decreases (blood, lung, brain, heart, and kidney). The impact of this result is discussed with special emphasis on passive targeted drug delivery and could also be used for the delineation and early-stage imaging of small tumors. The Pd–Au multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) supported catalyst exhibits higher power density in direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) than similar Pd/MWCNTs catalyst. The Pd–Au/MWCNTs catalyst also exhibits higher activity and is more stable in electrooxidation reaction of formic acid during cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements. After preparation by polyol method, the catalyst was subjected to two type of treatments: (I) annealing at 250 °C in 100% of Ar, (II) reducing in 5% of H2 in Ar atmosphere at 200 °C. It was observed that the catalyst after treatment I was completely inactive, whereas after treatment II exhibited high activity. In order to explain this effect the catalysts were characterized by electron spectroscopy methods. The higher initial catalytic activity of Pd–Au/MWCNTs catalyst than Pd/MWCNTs catalyst in reaction of formic acid electrooxidation was attributed to electronic effect of gold in Pd–Au solution, and larger content of small Au nanoparticles of 1 nm size. The catalytic inactivity of Pd–Au/MWCNTs catalysts annealed in argon is attributed to carbon amorphous overlayer covering of Pd oxide shell on the metallic nanoparticles.

The multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) supported Pd catalyst, prepared by the polyol method and reduced in 5% of H2 in Ar atmosphere at temperature of 200 °C, exhibits high activity in electrooxidation of formic acid, whereas, the same catalyst calcinated at temperature of 250 °C in 100% of Ar is inactive. The structural and chemical properties of the catalyst surfaces after reducing and calcination treatments were investigated using electron spectroscopy. The catalytically active sample indicated smaller O content, with the same content of Pd and C at the surface. Simultaneously, the content of carbon–oxygen–hydrogen groups, i.e., carboxyl, carbonyl, ester, ether, and acid anhydride, was lower. In the surface layer of both catalysts, three chemical Pd forms were observed: Pd metallic crystallites, PdO and Pd in organic matrix. In active catalyst, similar content of Pd crystallites and smaller content of PdO were observed. The differences in activity of the investigated Pd/MWCNTs catalysts after reduction and calcination result from the amorphous carbon covering the PdO/Pd nanoparticles, where the PdO layer is of larger thickness for inactive catalyst. This overlayer is removed after reduction in 5% of H2 in Ar atmosphere at temperature of 200 °C.
