Rice serves as a crucial staple food crop for half of the world's population. In the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD), rice production plays a vital role in national food security. However, the majority of the existing intensified rice cultivation schemes in the VMD, which are typically traditional, have rendered many farmers' livelihoods unsustainable due to issues such as land degradation, water pollution, health risks, and low profitability. Therefore, it is imperative to explore alternative sustainable farming systems. This study investigates the benefits of two ecological farming systems, specifically organic rice and rice mixed with lotus, as alternatives to conventional rice farming in the upper VMD floodplain province of An Giang. These two farming systems have demonstrated long-term socioecological and economic advantages. On the one hand, they allow the introduction of rice products to the market at more affordable prices. Additionally, they contribute to improved water quality, improved soil fertility, and increased biodiversity such as bird, fish, and plant species compared to traditional rice farming systems. Although we acknowledge that the availability of floodwater poses a significant constraint for alternative farming systems, the business opportunities and socioecological benefits associated with these systems outweigh the limitations. Our findings provide evidence that ecological farming practices that support rice cultivation represent promising alternatives to sustainable rice production, which can help mitigate vulnerabilities in intensified rice farming systems and can be scaled up for other floodplain provinces in the VMD and beyond.

Abstract Microbial pathogens in urban floodwaters pose risks to human health, potentially causing diseases such as diarrhea. However, the disease burden related to urban traffic exposure from citizens passing through floodwaters is not easily quantified and therefore not included in many studies. Notably, this problem has received little attention in low‐to‐middle‐income countries, with frequent flood events and the heavy diarrheal disease burden. This article calculates the infection risks and disease burden, considering traffic associated with exposure to floodwater contaminated with rotavirus for the first time in Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho city. Can Tho city in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta is well known to have many flood events every year, with many diarrheal cases during the flood season. The methodology comprises two steps. First, we applied quantitative microbial risk assessment that proposes the inclusion of exposure to traffic due to rotavirus in floodwater. Second, the disease burden was expressed in disability‐adjusted life years (DALYs). The exposed groups are child pedestrians, adult pedestrians, motorcyclists, and cyclists. We used video footage to monitor the traffic. The results show that total DALYs per flood event were 1.35 × 104 for 63,390 exposed people (i.e., 2129 DALYs per 10,000 cases). Motorcyclists are the strongest contributors to the DALYs (95%), followed by cyclists (2.8%), adult pedestrians (2%), and child pedestrians (0.2%). The population in Ninh Kieu District may suffer from waterborne diseases through traffic activities during flooding times. Our approach can be applied in other areas worldwide and helps identify main risk groups and focus areas for interventions.

Several international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) function as boundary organizations and try to promote ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) as a pivotal climate change adaptation strategy for coastal areas. This is being done in Vietnam. Few studies, however, have investigated how these INGOs operate, what challenges they face, and what conditions support them to successfully promote the implementation of EbA. To address this knowledge gap, the literature on international boundary work and boundary organizations was first reviewed, deriving four categories of conditions for a successful promotion of EbA: knowledge, networks, resources, and context. Next, we applied this framework in a case study of the International Union for Conservation (IUCN) and the Foundation of Netherlands Volunteers (SNV) led EbA project on the restoration and sustainable use of mangroves in two provinces, Ca Mau and Ben Tre, which are located in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. We interviewed 25 key informants representing INGOs, Vietnamese governmental agencies, farmers, scientists, and market parties. Our case study not only revealed how most literature-based success conditions were met but also found some additional conditions. We found that INGOs will have a greater chance of successfully promoting the implementation of the EbA in cases in which they can act as a knowledge broker, have a strong international network, can supply enough resources, and use context-specific strategies. A supportive context appeared to be essential.

Exploring whether society is sufficiently equipped and motivated to adopt planned interventions is vital for modern plan development trajectories. The Motivation and Ability (MOTA) framework offers a tool to assess the societal adoptability of plans by exploring stakeholders' motivations and abilities. It was originally developed to assess plan implementation feasibility for structural measures of flood management in the Mekong Delta. Further development is necessary before applying the tool in other contexts and for other types of planning interventions. Institutional measures like participatory water management (PWM) have long been recognized as essential elements for water management, but have so far also remained out of the reach of conventional planning assessment tools such as cost–benefit or cost-effectiveness analyses. This research, therefore, aims at extending the MOTA tool in the context of PWM reforms in Bangladesh. It does this by, first, further detailing the MOTA components and identifying indicators for quantification and, second, an expert validation and application of this framework for coastal communities in Bangladesh. Our results suggest that the MOTA framework is capable of informing policymakers and implementing agencies about how to enhance the stakeholders' motivation and ability to ensure an enduring implementation of PWM reforms. Rapid global changes (population growth, urbanization and frequent extreme weather conditions) have cumulatively affected local water bodies and resulted in unfavorable hydrological, ecological, and environmental changes in the major river systems. Particularly, communities in isolated riverine islands are heavily affected due to their poor adaptive capacities, which is well documented in the contemporary literature. The focal point for the vulnerability of these people lies in the water resources (drinking water availability, agricultural water quality, salt-water intrusion, flooding etc.) and the future interaction between human and water systems. This paper advocates the importance of socio-hydrological research in the context of enhancing social adaptive capacity as well as for developing a resilient water environment in three very large riverine islands in Asia: Fraserganj (India), Dakshin Bedkashi (Bangladesh) (both from the Ganges-Brahaputra-Meghna Delta) and Con Dao Island (Mekong River, Vietnam). It also explores how the nexus of human–water relations could be applied to improve adaptive measures to manage local water needs while mitigating undesirable changes to the hydrological cycle. Socio-hydrological models as an integrated tool can be used to quantify the feedbacks between water resources and society at multiple scales, with the aim of expediting stakeholder participation for sustainable water resource management. The proposed idea in this study will be helpful to sketch projections of alternatives that explicitly account for plausible and co-evolving trajectories of the socio-hydrological system, which will yield both insights into cause–effect relationships and help stakeholders to identify safe functioning space.

This paper compares three shaft-sensorless control schemes for wound-field flux-switching machines based on a high frequency (HF) square-wave voltage injection technique. An HF model for the machine, with inclusion of the field winding, is first presented. Because the machine had armature and field windings, HF voltage is injected into and processed in the armature winding as with conventional permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) or injected into one winding and processed in the induced current signal in the other winding. Both the analytical and experimental results reveal that the scheme with d-axis voltage injection and a q-axis induced current process is generally similar to that used for PMSMs. Polarity identification is required to prevent phase errors in the estimated position. The schemes with separate windings for voltage injection and current processing demonstrate superior performance compared with the scheme without, and both schemes do not require polarity identification. Moreover, voltage injection at the field winding has an additional advantage for high-speed operations.

ungauged Canle catchment is presented. The SRTM data was obtained and processed in order to createa suitable Digital Elevation Model (DEM). A lumped empirical model, the Geomorphologic InstantaneousUnit Hydrograph (GIUH) rainfall – runoff model, is developed for flood prediction. Model parameters aremainly Horton’s morphometric parameters including bifurcation, length and area ratios. A new functionalitywithin the ILWIS GIS-RS package, namely “DEM-hydro processing”, is applied to effectively processthe DEM and extract these ratios. Results showed that with limited data (e.g from SRTM), the model wassuccessfully applied for the Can Le catchment.
