Abstract

The optimal timing of anticoagulation for patients with acute ischaemic stoke with atrial fibrillation is uncertain. We investigated the efficacy and safety of early compared with delayed initiation of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in patients with acute ischaemic stroke associated with atrial fibrillation.

3. Students Engaging in Multiple-Source Inquiry Tasks: Capturing Dimensions of Collaborative Online Inquiry and Social Deliberation

Abstract

Multiple-source inquiry that involves collaboration and deliberation is a complex construct; accordingly, valid measurement of these related competencies should require students to demonstrate their collaborative inquiry and social deliberation skills as part of an integrated performance. In this article, we report findings from the first phase of an assessment project designed to develop and evaluate the use of a virtual world platform that simultaneously captures collaboration, online inquiry, and social deliberation in the context of a single scenario-based task. Mixed methods were employed to evaluate preliminary evidence of students' (ages 14-16) competencies in both face-to-face (n = 5 dyads) and remote (n = 6 dyads) contexts. Results indicated the scenario-based virtual assessment platform successfully captured varying levels of cognitive and social performance (using both product and process data) on several dimensions of collaborative online inquiry and social deliberation. Illustrative examples of dyads demonstrating stronger or weaker collaborative processes and high-level themes that emerged are presented. Implications for classroom settings and large-scale assessment environments are discussed.

Abstract

The goal of fisheries assessment is to predict the consequences of fishing and other environmental interventions and, on that basis, evaluate how different management schemes fare at achieving various management goals. Forecasting the state and harvest of exploited populations and communities is thus central to fishery science.There are two broad approaches that can be used to forecast fisheries population and harvest. On the one hand, there are short-term forecasts aimed at predicting the size of the exploitable stock for the upcoming fishing season in order to implement a predetermined feedback harvest rule. In this case, the forecast is part of the tactic used to define regulatory measures for the fishing season, such as the total allowable catch or the number of allowable effort units. This type of forecast is critical for fisheries based on shortlived or semelparous species (species that reproduce once and then die), where the bulk or all of the annual catch is made up of new recruits.Mid- and long-term forecasts of populations, on the other hand, are used in policy design to examine likely consequences of different management options and thus guide strategic decision-making. In contrast to short-term tactical forecasts, mid- and long-term forecasts are not meant to actually predict the future of the system under exploitation; rather, they attempt to represent a full range of scenarios that are deemed possible based on historical experience. Because our ability to actually predict the responses of natural systems to harvest is admittedly limited, the emphasis in policy design is on feedback and robustness of performance across scenarios. Mid- and long-term forecasts aimed at guiding general management approaches are difficult because they require more information than the most recent harvest rates and data on catch per unit of effort, but it is not clear which of many possible auxiliary data will be most useful or how much history to consider. 13. Evaluating various wind measurement and retrival schemes used for the Pentagon Shield Project

Abstract

The Pentagon Shield Project is an antiterrorist initiative to develop a system that models and predicts the dispersion of airborne toxins around the Pentagon. This system will depend on wind measuring instruments and estimation, or retrieval, techniques to provide input to dispersion models. A field experiment conducted in April-May 2004 used a number of wind measuring instruments and retrieval techniques to examine the local airflow. This study evaluated the accuracy of two measuring instruments, Doppler lidar (a laser-based radar) and SODAR (SOund Detection And Ranging), and three retrieval techniques to determine which schemes provide the most reliable wind profiles. The data were compared by separating the observed and retrieved wind vectors into two components, the radial and azimuthal components. A least-square fit comparison of the radial wind components from the lidar and SODAR showed that the SODAR-measured winds were slightly higher than those measured by the lidar. The azimuthal wind components were used to verify the retrieval techniques, Velocity-Azimuth Display (VAD) and two variations of Velocity Volume Processing (VVP-1, VVP-2). Our results showed that the VAD method breaks down for the small sectors of data that were collected over the Pentagon. VVP-1 and VVP-2 perform least-square curve fitting on radial wind data but over different sectors. The results showed that VVP-2 gives a better estimate of the average wind over larger areas. Evaluating these schemes is important not only for the Pentagon Shield Project, but for other studies that use similar instruments and techniques to examine wind fields.
