4. Revealing Sediment Transport Pathways and Geomorphic Change in Washover Fans by Combining Drone-Derived Digital Elevation Models and Single Grain Luminescence Data

Abstract

Chronostratigraphic investigations on coastal sedimentary records such as washover fans or beach‐ridge sequences may be used to reconstruct storm chronologies on centennial to millennial time scales. However, modern analogs are pivotal in interpreting depositional processes and reducing uncertainty in evaluating the complex chronostratigraphic architecture of these landforms. Such a modern analog was provided by category 3 tropical cyclone (TC) Olwyn in 2015, which caused a significant storm surge in the Exmouth Gulf (Western Australia). Pre‐ and post‐TC Olwyn geomorphological surveys and high‐resolution drone‐derived topographical data of a large washover fan document a detailed history of erosion and deposition during the event. The modern analog deposits provided an excellent opportunity to evaluate the use of luminescence‐based proxies (luminescence inventories) for tracing event‐related sediment source environments and understanding transport processes. Sediments deposited during Olwyn show a systematic relationship between luminescence characteristics and washover fan position. Seaward and central washover sections are indicated by well‐bleached deposits due to the beach as the dominant source and/or long transport distances. Lateral washover deposits are characterized by rather local source areas and short transport distances, resulting in higher remnant ages of 70–140 a. Our data show that the combination of sediment source environments and sediment transport length across the fan represents the main control in resetting the luminescence signal and enabling reliable depositional ages to be calculated. It documents the benefit of investigating luminescence inventories when establishing chronologies from complex sedimentary records, thereby demanding a careful consideration of local processes and source areas when interpreting sedimentary TC records.

Abstract

Results describe the urdamycin biosynthetic gene cluster composition and identify the gene products. The product of urdM exhibits similarities to oxygenase and the amino acid sequence of urdGT2 resembles that of glycosyltransferase. Data further indicate that UrdGT2 catalyzes the earliest glycosyltransfer step in urdamycin biosynthesis.

Auch im urbanen Raum engagieren sich zahlreiche zivilgesellschaftliche Akteure für eine nachhaltige Stadtentwicklung. In der vorliegenden Publikation stellen wir die Ergebnisse einer soziologischen Begleitforschung vor. Am Beispiel einer lokalen Nachhaltigkeitsinitiative gehen wir der Frage nach, auf welche Weise sich zivilgesellschaftliche Initiativen und Bewegungen zusammenschließen, um einen Beitrag zu einer nachhaltigen Stadtentwicklung zu leisten.

28. Beachrock-type calcarenitic tsunamites along the shores of the eastern Ionian Sea (western Greece) - Case studies from Akarnania, the Ionian Islands and the western Peloponnese

Abstract

This paper presents geo-scientific evidence of beachrock-type calcarenitic tsunamites from three study areas in western Greece, namely from the Bays of Aghios Nikolaos (Akarnania), Langadakia (Cefalonia Island) and Aghios Andreas (Peloponnese). Geomorphological, sedimentological, micromorphological and geochemical studies were conducted to clarify depositional processes and the post-sedimentary evolution. Calcarenitic and locally conglomeratic carbonate crusts were studied in natural outcrops along the seafront and in vibracores. High-resolution topographic surveys and 3D-visualisation were carried out by differential GPS and LIDAR measurements. Tsunami impact was dated by a combined approach of radiocarbon, OSL and archaeological age determination and compared to local tsunami and earthquake chronologies. We found sedimentary structures such as basal unconformities, rip-up and intra-clasts, evidence of fining upward, thinning landward and upward increase in sorting as well as bi-to multimodal deposits and injection structures all of which are described as features typical of recent or historic tsunami deposits. Typically non-littoral sedimentary features such as load casts and convolute bedding further indicate gravity driven processes in water-saturated sheets of allochthonous deposits and are well known from, for example, turbidites. Moreover, thin section analyses revealed high-energy shock-and impact-borne cracking and shearing effects. Our results show that cementation of tsunami deposits may occur by post-depositional pedogenetic decalcification of higher sections and subsequent secondary carbonate precipitation in lower sections of tsunami deposits provided that they were deposited above sea level. The calcarenitic tsunamites encountered in the three study areas match the definition of beachrock sensu stricto. This is thus the first paper giving examples of beachrock sequences that are interpreted as partially cemented tsunami deposits. Consequently, beachrock is recommended not to be used as sea level indicator in future studies unless a tsunamigenic formation can be definitely excluded. Dating results brought to light young, mostly Holocene ages of tsunami sediments. In the Bay of Aghios Andreas, western Peloponnese, we found spectacular traces that Olympia's ancient harbour site Pheia was destroyed by tsunami impact in the 6th cent. Abstract

Efficient lignin depolymerization is unique to the wood decay basidiomycetes, collectively referred to as white rot fungi. Phanerochaete chrysosporium simultaneously degrades lignin and cellulose, whereas the closely related species, Ceriporiopsis subvermispora, also depolymerizes lignin but may do so with relatively little cellulose degradation. To investigate the basis for selective ligninolysis, we conducted comparative genome analysis of C. subvermispora and P. chrysosporium. Genes encoding manganese peroxidase numbered 13 and five in C. subvermispora and P. chrysosporium, respectively. In addition, the C. subvermispora genome contains at least seven genes predicted to encode laccases, whereas the P. chrysosporium genome contains none. We also observed expansion of the number of C. subvermispora desaturase-encoding genes putatively involved in lipid metabolism. Microarray-based transcriptome analysis showed substantial up-regulation of several desaturase and MnP genes in wood-containing medium. MS identified MnP proteins in C. subvermispora culture filtrates, but none in P. chrysosporium cultures. These results support the importance of MnP and a lignin degradation mechanism whereby cleavage of the dominant nonphenolic structures is mediated by lipid peroxidation products. Two C. subvermispora genes were predicted to encode peroxidases structurally similar to P. chrysosporium lignin peroxidase and, following heterologous expression in Escherichia coli, the enzymes were shown to oxidize high redox potential substrates, but not Mn2+. Apart from oxidative lignin degradation, we also examined cellulolytic and hemicellulolytic systems in both fungi. Abstract

Remote sensing of crop biomass is important in regard to precision agriculture, which aims to improve nutrient use efficiency and to develop better stress and disease management. In this study, multi-temporal crop surface models (CSMs) were generated from UAV-based dense imaging in order to derive plant height distribution and to determine forage mass. The low-cost UAV-based RGB imaging was carried out in a grassland experiment at the University of Bonn, Germany, in summer 2015. The test site comprised three consecutive growths including six different nitrogen fertilizer levels and three replicates, in sum 324 plots with a size of 1.5×1.5 m. Each growth consisted of six harvesting dates. RGB-images and biomass samples were taken at twelve dates nearly biweekly within two growths between June and September 2015. Images were taken with a DJI Phantom 2 in combination of a 2D Zenmuse gimbal and a GoPro Hero 3 (black edition). Overlapping images were captured in 13 to 16 m and overview images in approximately 60 m height at 2 frames per second. The RGB vegetation index (RGBVI) was calculated as the normalized difference of the squared green reflectance and the product of blue and red reflectance from the non-calibrated images. The post processing was done with Agisoft PhotoScan Professional (SfM-based) and Esri ArcGIS. 14 ground control points (GCPs) were located in the field, distinguished by 30 cm × 30 cm markers and measured with a RTK-GPS (HiPer Pro Topcon) with 0.01 m horizontal and vertical precision. The errors of the spatial resolution in x-, y-, z-direction were in a scale of 3-4 cm. From each survey, also one distortion corrected image was georeferenced by the same GCPs and used for the RGBVI calculation. The results have been used to analyse and evaluate the relationship between estimated plant height derived with this low-cost UAV-system and forage mass. Results indicate that the plant height seems to be a suitable indicator for forage mass. There is a robust correlation of crop height related with dry matter (R2 = 0.6). The RGBVI seems not to be a suitable indicator for forage mass in grassland, although the results provided a medium correlation by combining plant height and RGBVI to dry matter (R2 = 0.5).
